Anita Shreve's All He Ever Wanted reads like Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own told from the perspective of the husband. The wife gains a measure of freedom, but how does the repressive, abandoned husband feel about that freedom? Set in the early 1900s in the fictional New England college town of Thrupp, and narrated by the pompous Nicholas Van Tassel, All He Ever Wanted is at once an academic satire, a period novel, and a tale of suspense. Shreve's ability to nimbly hop through genres brings a liveliness to this story of love gone depressingly wrong. Van Tassel is an undistinguished professor of rhetoric at Thrupp College and a confirmed bachelor when he meets--in no less flamy a scenario than a hotel fire--the arresting Miss Etna Bliss. Immediately smitten, he woos and wins her. At least, he persuades her to become his wife. But Van Tassel hasn't really won her. Etna keeps her secrets and her feelings to herself. The extent of her withholding only becomes clear after a couple of kids and a decade or so of marriage. Then we find out that she's been creating a secret haven for herself all along. Van Tassel is in turn revealed--through his own priggish, puffed-up sentences--as something of a monster. The book is cleverly done; watching Etna through Van Tassel's eyes is like looking at beautiful bird from a hungry cat's point of view. But Van Tassel's voice might be too well written; he's pedantic and dull and snarky all at once, and by the end we find that we, like Etna, can't bear his company a minute longer. --Claire Dederer

Ebook Special Feature: Includes essays written by Anita Shreve and chapter excerpts from Sea Glass, The Last Time They Met, and Fortune's Rocks. A man escaping from a hotel fire sees a woman standing beneath a tree. He approaches her and sets in motion a series of events that will change his life forever. Years later, traveling from New England to Florida by train, he reflects back on his obsession with this unknown and ultimately unknowable woman-his courtship of her, his marriage to her, and the unforgivable act that ripped their family apart. Spanning three decades from 1899 to 1933, ALL HE EVER WANTED gives us a tale of marriage, betrayal, and the search for redemption. It has the unmatched attention to details of character, place, and emotion that have made Anita Shreve one of America's best-loved and bestselling novelists.

4 out of 5 stars Another novel by Anita Shreve that I loved.......2007-08-18

ALL HE EVER WANTED by Anita Shreve
August 18, 2007

Amazon Rating: 4/5 stars

Another excellent Anita Shreve book, ALL HE EVER WANTED is unique in that the main character and narrator is a man. The story takes place in the early 1900's, and begins with a restaurant fire. The narrator had been eating in the hotel restaurant when the fire broke, and he relates to the event and his first glimpse of the woman who will eventually become his wife. What is important is the narration, as it gives the reader a very good observation of the character of this person, Nicholas Van Tassel, who will come across to most as learned, somewhat pompous and at times arrogant. His speech is, I felt, over the top, and this is what gives one the impression that he often times feels he's above everyone else (which is implied, not stated).

He is immediately besotted with this beautiful woman, who is a little past marriageable age but nevertheless attracts his attention. He cannot stop thinking about her. He finds a way to meet her, and learns that she is the niece of a colleague of his at Thrupp College, where he himself is also a professor. Her parents are deceased, so she is currently living with her uncle Professor Bliss until she is ready to return home to what is now has become her brother in law's house (being a woman, she had no rights to the property where she had lived with her parents. Thus she was kicked out of her own house).

Nicholas begins to woo Etna, coming to see her at her uncle's house and asking to take walks with her. The courtship is slow and long, and Etna (the reader will notice) is not enamored with Nicholas as he is with her. Eventually, Nicholas gets the courage to ask for her hand in marriage, and Etna does accept eventually, as it is the better of two evils - she knows that her fate was to live the life of a spinster, becoming the nanny to her sister's children.

Thus begins the life of Nicholas and Etna Bliss, with Etna agreeing to be the mother of his children, to be his wife. They have two children and to the outside world all seems to be perfect. But the marriage was lacking in one important factor - Etna did not love Nicholas, and Nicholas knows this. He hopes that as the years progress that his wife will learn to love him as much as he passionately loves her.

The reader will know immediately that Nicholas's love for Etna is not a healthy one. He is obsessed with her, as is evidenced by his thoughts throughout the narration, and his actions. Etna is trapped in a marriage she never wanted, but felt she had to accept because she needed stability and a place to call her own. What Nicholas does not know for quite a while is that Etna is keeping secrets. And Etna does her best to keep them hidden, as they are the only sources of happiness she has in this one-sided marriage.

I wasn't sure if I would like ALL HE EVER WANTED, being somewhat skeptical with the male narration, but it worked for me. Shreve creates a character that the reader will loathe, or maybe feel pity for, but I certainly had strong feelings towards this man who I felt was a chauvinist and a pompous jerk. But was he a result of the times? Maybe. Still, the life he and Etna create together is far from perfect, and I could certainly understand Etna's needs. Anita Shreve does it again, and has written another absorbing novel in ALL HE EVER WANTED.

2 out of 5 stars Utterly pointless.......2007-07-06

The characters are not likeable. The story is uneventful. This is not Shreve's best work by far.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2007-07-01

This was my first book by Anita Shreve and I was totally blown away by its beauty. The writing is exquisite, and the story is riveting. After this, I read the much-acclaimed "The Pilot's Wife," but I confess that I found this one a better read. Perhaps because of the historical setting... In any event, I adored this book and am now determined to read everything she's ever written. Superb!

3 out of 5 stars Well done... 3.5 Stars.......2007-05-24

I really enjoyed these characters and now that I finished the book I'm disappointed to be done reading about them.

This is an easy and enjoyable read, it's well written with realistic characters.

It is the story of Nicholas Van Tassel, a professor at a small college in New Hampshire at the turn of the century. It's the story of his life as he tells it years later. He describes how he meets and falls in love with his wife and how his desire to be loved by her eventually becomes his undoing. He confesses to us his horrible behavior and the consequences of that behavior. It's always hard to discuss a book and not give too much away...

I enjoyed the time period, the voice that Anita Shreve gives to Van Tassel is convincing as are the characters.

I'd love for Shreve to write another novel telling this same story from the perspective of the wife, Etna Bliss Van Tassel.

I think this would be a good book club choice.

5 out of 5 stars What if?.......2007-04-05

This tragic love story will leave you with a series of what if questions about love. When is love too much, and what if love is not exactly reciprocal?

Wit'ch Fire grabs you in the first scene, and doesn't let go until the very end. This is the beginning of a new fantasy series--the Banned and the Banished--by first-time author James Clemens, but its sophistication and style are reminiscent of experienced fantasists such as Guy Gavriel Kay and George R.R. Martin. Elena is "the wit'ch of spirit and stone," born of a deadly alliance between three powerful mages in fulfillment of prophecy. But can she learn how to use her powers in time to resist the forces of the Dark Lord? She is joined in her battle by some unlikely allies, but the motley crew may be the only hope for a threatened world. Clemens handles plot and characterization deftly, but the addition of lots of un'neccesary apos'trophes to let you know you're reading a fantasy is a little distracting. Still, Wit'ch Fire is a fast-moving, entertaining read that's definitely worth your time.

                    5 out of 5 stars Enthralling.......2007-06-26

This series is one of the better series I've read. It's fast paced with unique characters, and some of the most evil bad guys I've read.
I started it as a "maybe" book... I wasn't sure if I would like it so I bought a used copy of the first in the series... and I LOVED it! There are many twists and turns throughout the series, some easily guessed, others leave you baffled until the last minute...

Keep in mind that everyone has different opinions... So while one person hates this book, someone else out there will love it... and vice versa...

3 out of 5 stars Stumbling out of the racing block........2007-03-18

An easy book to read, and while the series' story seems promising, there are some annoyances. Mainly the racial naming convention of inserting apostrophes into known words. Wit'ch? Og're? Come on! I also find there's a bit of awkwardness to the characters and their conversation, but I hope this is due simply to the author having a final vision of what the characters will grow into, and is struggling with the metamorphosis.

i loved the book it was a great story,it was hard to put down.the characters in the book had thier own reasons for banning together that mixed well. i can't wait to read the next book

I really liked this book and upon checking over the reviews I realized that apparently while writing the review I gave it a 1 star which was purely accidental my original intent to give it 4 stars so mix really sorry for the inconvenience (that's why I now give the review a 5 star to try to make up the damage.)

5 out of 5 stars Wit'ch Fire (The Banned and the Banished, Book 1).......2006-08-30

This book is super. It is right up there with the Lord of the Rings series and Harry Potter. It was hard to break away from it to do other things like go to work. :)

Once I am done the entire series, I will be looking for other books written by James Clemens.

J.D. McClatchy, a superb poet and the editor of The Yale Review, has put together a number of landmark anthologies over the years, including the Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry and Vintage Book of Contemporary World Poetry. For the Everyman's Library Pocket Poets series, he has co-edited an anthology of Christmas Poems with John Hollander. And, most recently, he has edited the Library of America's outstanding edition of the poems of Longfellow. But perhaps nowhere has he brought his refined taste and peerless editorial acumen to bear more beautifully than on this Everyman edition of some of the finest poems about birds in the English language-ON WINGS OF SONG.

McClatchy sets the tone for this collection in his elegant foreword: "At the very dawn of civilization, birds were symbols of the spirit. Falcon or dove, stork or raven or owl, they were our messengers, fierce or gentle intermediaries between our earthbound lives and the upper air." Keenly aware of emblematic types and the categories that they fall into, McClatchy carefully arranges the anthology accordingly. The list of poets that grace this anthology include many timeless masters, ranging from Virgil to Chaucer, from Wordsworth to Yeats, and from Poe to Frost.

The great Romantic era poems about birds, such as Shelley's "To a Skylark" and Keats's "To a Nightingale" are duly included, but the surprises in the collection are numerous. Among my favorites is a little-known four-line poem by the Anglo-Indian poet Vikram Seth, entitled "Pigeons": "The pigeons swing across the square/Suddenly voiceless in midair,/Flaunting, against their civic coats,/The glossy oils that scarf their throats." A number of the poems are also downright funny. Chief among these is X.J. Kennedy's sardonic "Vulture": "The vulture's very like a sack/Set down and left there drooping./His crooked neck and creaky back/Look badly bent from stooping/Down to the ground to eat dead cows/So they won't go to waste/Thus making up in usefulness/For what he lacks in taste."

McClatchy does a masterful job of arranging the poems in a manner that refreshes and surprises the reader at every turn. ON THE WINGS OF SONG is a must have on every birdwatcher's and verse lover's shelf.

                            5 out of 5 stars Splendid.......2000-07-17

This Pocket Poets series has done us a great favor by publishing these short collections of a central theme. Past volumes focused on common poetic themes (i.e. love, war, friendship), and while there has already been a volume on animal poems, one devoted to bird poems is certainly time- and paper-worthy.

This little book gives lovers of poetry (and of birds) a chance to indulge in the seemingly forbidden enjoyment, in today's poetic world, of poetry as an ebullient celebration of the simple and mundane. With so many poets of our time are so caught up with catharsis, neuroses, unresolved parental issues, and the like, it's difficult to imagine those poets taking the focus off themselves long enough to consider something like birds, let alone write poems about them. Fortunately, as this book enchantingly demonstrates, our poetic heritage is too rich to let us forget that poet craft has a vast voice to speak of many things, and with a topic such as birds, the poem has the power to shake us out of our indifference to the ordinary, letting us see its beauty by honoring with beauty.

I presently own all the volumes of the Pocket Poets series to date, and this volume easily ranks among my favorites. It includes a fascinatingly broad range of poetic literature from the Bible to contemporaries like Seamus Heaney, and its last section pays homage to "famous" birds in poetry, such as Coleridge's albatross and Poe's raven. It's worth every cent, and has a very attractive dust jacket to boot, so you'll be tempted to leave it out on your coffee table just to impress your friends.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful gathering of literary verse revolving around birds.......2000-07-04

This pocket-sized hardcover of poems about birds provides a beautiful gathering of literary verse revolving around birds, separated by general bird categories from 'backyard' and 'barnyard' to 'birds of prey' and beyond. A fine gift for a literary birder.

With a history dating back to 1820, The Missouri Harmony was the most popular of all frontier shape-note tune books. The 185 songs in the collection were favorites used in Protestant churches and singing schools, and many were already deeply rooted in American culture by the time of its first publication. The story of the book is the story of a burgeoning nation, with its origins in a St. Louis school (where it was introduced by singing master Allen Carden) and its spread along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. This updated and expanded version of Allen D. Carden's 1820 volume now contains more than 300 pages of original and traditional music compositions collected by the St. Louis Shape Note Singers. An introductory text explains and illuminates the shape-note tradition and the history of the book.

Named one of science fiction's 100 best books by noted genre editor David Pringle, Thomas M. Disch's On Wings of Song is at once allegory, social satire, political fable, and brilliantly written science fiction of the ultimate out-of-body experience. In Disch's dazzlingly imagined future America, Daniel Weinraub dreams of escaping the repressive midwest of the mid-twenty-first century through an electronic device with which the user takes flight into cyberspace when activated with a quasi-musical code called "The Symphonette." Daniel's adventures take him from Iowa's God-fearing police state and its "correctional" labor camps for the sinful to Manhattan's mean streets and "cyberspatial flight paths."

4 out of 5 stars Learn To Fly!.......2005-08-31

On Wings of Song was one of my favorite reads as a young adult as it severely questioned many of the Midwestern sensibilities to which I was accustomed and brought home the fact that America was big enough in which to "soar around". This was originally serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which was where I first read and enjoyed it, and it was gratifying to know that it had garnered recognition and awards in the science fiction community.

Though the novel makes reference to "fairies" and is where I had first learned of [...] (Ouch!), I'm a little taken aback by the notion seemingly proffered by a few that this is a [...] novel. I'm as straight as an arrow and thoroughly enjoyed this novel of sheer wish-fulfillment, social commentary, and escapism. Whether or not many of its elements might be metaphorical to the [...] lifestyle is immaterial.

I had been a fan of Disch's literate writing mainly through his fine short story collections, though I was generally put off by his novels Camp Concentration and 334 (I might have to revisit them). Despite its fantastic elements, On Wings of Song is a relevant and accessible novel with an adventurous, talented, and caring young protagonist--a fine read from beginning to end that will hopefully remain in print.

                                1 out of 5 stars Impossibly Padded.......2004-11-30

Disch's over-inflated diction plods on for an impossibly padded 350-something pages. Disch appears to have gargled a thesaurus and then regurgitated it all onto paper.
Although, to be fair, "Song" does bring up certain philosophical questions, such as, "If God is just, why did he allow this book to be published?" or "Does Disch's prose truly stop time or simply make it feel that way?" or "Will 'Song' fit under that stilted leg on the picnic table so it stops wobbling?"

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful entertainment with some clever social commentary.......2004-09-19

There is no way not to enjoy this clever book "On Wings of Song". I found Daniel Weinreb to be a 21st century Holden Caufield, from "Catcher in the Rye". Life on the inner city edge also reminded me of Denis Johnson's "Jesus' Son".

Disch's future America, a politically divided nation of secular excess on either coast, divided by a conservative theocracy in the middle, is almost too real to be funny.

On another level the book is about enlightenment and Daniel's efforts to reach nirvana, where the soul becomes a fairy and zones out for centuries contemplating electric motors. Daniel is also totally devoted to his young wife as she lays in a coma while her soul flits and flirts around the world in a state of ecstasy which he only imagines (until the final pages of the book).

Someone needs to make this classic science fiction work into a movie. Colin Ferrell or Matt Dillion would both do a great job playing Daniel in his quest to leave conservative religious middle America and not only escape to less repressive societies but also to experience the state of being a fairy, divorced from the human body and in a state of perpetual enlightenment.

                                5 out of 5 stars Virtuoso!.......2001-04-25

Disch has done it again! Surpassed himself with this gem of a book! Daniel Weinreb is a creation beyond belief. Never have I sympathised so much with a character. This book is so subtly layered that everytime I read it, I find something new. The concept is original and I'm envious that I didn't think of it! Disch's style is also enviable. He is everything a writer should aspire to. Certainly this is his best novel. Disch is a Maestro, the language is at his command. It's fabulous the way he mocked Norberg at the end of the novel - however frustrating the ending was. If Disch is reading this: Did he ever get to fly? This novel deserves ten stars out of five

                                5 out of 5 stars Best Ever.......2000-07-05

For me, "On Wings Of Song" is among one of the best books I've ever read. It transcends such concepts of genre and manages to become something quite different. This book should appeal to all, but especially the young as its themes of escape, rebellian and success deal explictly with the perils of growing up. It is interesting too how Disch paints such a division between American states in the future, but it is not done in usual future prediction style. This book will make you think about where you're heading in life.

                                            Book Description

We were married October 24, 1954 and had 38 years of "happily ever after". Then, on November 14,1991, my beloved husband Bill, passed from this life. Overwhelmed with grief from so great a loss, I prayed for help and in the deep, plush velvet night, my soul heard the answers. They floated as feathers and lifted me from the depths of my sorrow. I could feel the angels. I could hear their whispers and I loved them as they lifted me. Within the covers of this, my first book, are the feathers my angel's wings as they fell, one day at a time, and their healing love and faith soothed my stricken heart. Then, as the wings were filled, I was lifted one song at a time by these Feathers from an Angel's Wings.

                                            Book Description

At times we may be called to be companions on a journey we would rather not take--the journey of a loved one toward the end of life. For those who choose to serve as close companions of terminally ill relatives or friends, Parting offers the collective wisdom of people from many cultures and faith traditions as a "travel guide" for meaningful companionship--helping someone toward a peaceful transition from this life. Sections of the book discuss how to cross the bridge from ordinary conversation to spiritual reflection; how to provide comforts for the body, mind, and soul; and how to care for yourself while concentrating on the needs of another. Transcending any specific religion or culture, this handbook addresses universal spiritual needs.

Designed for easy reading by weary travelers, this practical, pocket-sized guide prepares the spiritual companion for an enriching experience, even on the journey toward life's end. It is an indispensable tool for family members and friends, hospice workers, religious leaders, counselors, and medical providers.

                                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Preparing for the journey.......2004-07-05

I assisted my Mother through her hospice experience in 1999 and am preparing for a ministry that will focus on the end-of-life journey.

I found this book to be excellent in how it assists anyone in the dying person's life (friend, family member, chaplain, volunteer or professional caregiver) to companion with the person in ways that will enrich his or her last days here (life on earth) and prepare him or her for the journey to the beyond.
