Book Description
DESCRIPTION: In Norway, children are disappearing. First there was nine-year-old Emilie, whose backpack was discovered in a deserted alley. One week later, it was a five-year-old boy. And then another. As public panic escalates, police commissioner Stubo urgently tries to enlist the help of former FBI profiler Johanna Vik, who is already immersed in the investigation of a man who fled to the United States 40 years ago after wrongly being accused of murder. Vik is herself the mother of a troubled six-year-old daughter, and resistant to getting involved until a gruesome turn in Stubo's case compells her to reconsider. The bodies of the young victims start turning up in their families' homes--with notes that read "You got what you deserved." Now, united in a desperate search to decipher a killer's next move, Stubo and Vik must unravel a complex story of madness and revenge...before more innocent children meet the same untimely end.

Great story!.......2007-08-13
Wow! Great Characters! depth and feeling! I loved it. I cannot wait for more. A fantastic Tale from Mrs. Holt
not your usual crime novel.......2007-07-16
I just finished reading the German translation of this book and was completely sucked in right from the beginning. The characters and storyline had a lot of depth. The characters seemed real and there were short, little details in the story that would keep you guessing as to how they played into the plot. Really a fantastic book.
A suggestion from my mother..........2006-12-31
My mother gave me this book and insisted that I read it. I'm not a big mystery/suspense fan, but I have to say that this one was a vast improvement on the Mary Higgins Clark novels that my mother usually suggests. I have to admit that I couldn't put it down because I wanted so badly to know what would happen. I also enjoyed Ms. Holt's writing style, although maybe the style wasn't exactly hers considering this was a translation. I can't read Norwegian, so I guess I'll never know :o). However, the "heroine", Johanne Vik, was nothing short of annoying. She was indecisive and in my opinion, a "witch with a 'b'". The only question I have is--is "stocky" considered an attractive trait in Norway? Because Ms. Holt described most of the "attractive" men as "stocky" as well, and those two words usually aren't used together when American authors describe men. Just curious about that.
Anyway, if your a mystery/suspense book kind of person, like I said, this one was a vast improvement on some of those types of books written by American authors.
Where are your children?.......2006-08-25
Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (8/06)
The plot could have been ripped from the headlines. Child missing! Those words are every parent's worse nightmare. Ann Holt brings us a suspenseful, believable book in "What Is Mine".
Emilie is an eight-year-old girl. She is abducted on her way home from school. Soon another child is missing, a boy named Kim. But this is only the beginning. Parents are frantic whose child is next. Then Kim is found dead in his parents' basement with a note attached. Police have few leads.
Johanne Vik is an FBI profiler. She is juggling her time between her work, her special needs daughter and her obsession with a forty year old case of missing children, a case that destroy a young man's life. Johanne is asked to assist in the investigation of the recent abductions, which she declines. After more abductions, she is drawn into the investigation - But is it too late? Emilie is still missing.
The experts say there are three reasons for child abduction "ransom, parent custody situations and pedophile." There is no ransom note, the parents are not involved, could it be a pedophile or could the experts be wrong. Could there be a fourth reason.
Where are your children? Who are they with? Too often parents drop their children off at an event without checking to see if there is a responsible parent watching over them. Too often parents leave children unattended. We never know who is watching and waiting for the opportunity to snatch one of our precious children away from us. Is there someone watching, waiting, hoping you will let down your guard? Parents are responsible for the safety of their children.
I enjoyed this book but found the plot to be slow in places. The background information drags the plot down. This is not a thriller. A thriller takes you on a roller coaster ride with its ups and downs. This has a plot that slowly develops much like watching a pot of water boil. Slowly you see bubbles rise until at last, the bubbles become a full boil.
Page turner from Norway.......2006-08-08
This book was given to me recently. Anne Holt has done very good work here, especially in the character development department. I strongly disagree with the editorial review by Publishers Weekly that said less time could have been spent on character descriptions. The plot, a serial killer in Norway develops quickly- Almost too quickly. The interplay between Vik, the psychologist/academic and Stubo, the methodical detective is well done. Getting to know them is a significant part of the story. As stated in prior reviews young children disappear and turn up with no apparent cause of death. We get to meet the psychopath early on but have to wait for the conclusion to get the whole story.
I enjoyed the book- Style and story. While sometimes finding translations difficult to get into this one is an exception. Ms Holt had me losing sleep.
The only criticism I offer is that the story almost appeared to be rushed towards the end. For this reason alone I would have given it a 4.5 if that was offered. I was enjoying it so much I could have gone another 75 to 100 pages if the story could have continued to be supported. All in all I expect to be reading more Anne Holt.

A Powerful Guide to Healing.......2003-09-15
When I first saw the title, I felt a bit of a shock go through me. WE ARE ALL IN SHOCK grabbed my attention immediately, and as I began to read this amazing book and learn about Stephanie Mines' definitions of shock, I was hooked. WE ARE ALL IN SHOCK delves into a subject matter most of us have experienced, yet few of us have ever faced up to or dealt with in a conscious manner, and no doubt it is harming our health as individuals, and as a society. According to Dr. Mines, millions of people suffer various forms of shock to their systems, whether it be physically, psychologically or spiritually, and that until we learn to deal with and heal our shock, we end up continuously manifesting all kinds of emotional and physical damage that has a snowball effect on our health and ability to be happy and whole.
Using several powerful and inspiring true-life experiences of patients she has treated, Dr. Mines takes us on a journey of discovery as we examine the many kinds of shock, how they manifest in our bodies and our behavior, and what we can do to help our own healing. The crux of the book is The TARA Approach, the use of energy medicine to resolve our shock and bring ourselves back to a state of wholeness. With numerous charts, drawings, photos and detailed explanations, we learn about certain energy centers and physical points on the body that, when held or touched, can bring about a total realignment of our broken energy patterns, help us to cope with shock, and make us feel a sense of calm and well-being.
I actually used some of the touching techniques and was delighted to feel the sensations of calm and centering Dr. Mines writes of, and I will continue to use this book for the rest of my life, which is the hallmark of a truly worthwhile book. The fact that it is something you can turn to over and over again makes it worth every cent of the $16.99 retail price. The photos and diagrams make it so easy to find the correct areas on your own body to touch and apply gentle pressure to in order to experience the relief and centeredness Dr. Mines writes so eloquently about. I have a son with Cerebral Palsy and plan to utilize these techniques with him, as well.
Dr. Mines fills each chapter with so much powerful and effective information and examples, you will be left breathless. The extensive Bibliography also gives you additional resources to learn more about this critical subject.
The most fascinating chapter for me was about the shock that occurs during the prenatal experience and during birth, and how parents can work with energy medicine to help heal their children's hidden energy imbalances as well as their own. I also really enjoyed MOTHER NATURE, YOU AND ME - THE SEAMLESS MATRIX OF LIFE, which details the importance of getting back in touch with nature and simple techniques to bring more balance to our lives. So much of what Dr. Mines writes about will make you realize just how much shock we live with on a day-to-day basis, and how it is crucial to our species' survival that we begin to acknowledge and resolve this overwhelming shock.
Info, case histories & practical tools for shock resolution!.......2003-07-10
Ultimately, there are many variables in the "grand scheme" of a human being's life that determine who we become. This book addresses one of those variables, the experience of shock, and the diverse neurological adaptations and behavioral characteristics that result from shocking experiences. However, this enlightening book goes further than merely acknowledging and educating us about how to identify shock, in that Dr. Mines includes instructions for using Jin Shin TARA (a form of energetic medicine similar to acupressure) to actually resolve the effects of shock.
The premise, "we are all in shock," for me, was initially a foreign construct. However, through the assorted case histories presented by this passionate author, psychologist, teacher and healer, we come to understand that shock is more ubiquitous than we initially realized, and is commonly encountered through: injuries and accidents, prenatal and birth experiences, physical challenges and disabilities, abandonment, AIDS, adoption, abuse, earthquakes and natural disasters, relationships, toxic environments and pollution, as well as many other areas of the human experience. We learn that unresolved shock usurps our power to live our lives freely and creatively. It can damage our self-image, and birth mechanical responses to life events that do not serve us. The well-chosen case histories and accompanying treatments for each presentation of shock convinced me that Dr. Mine's material holds a key for perplexing behaviors we sometimes find ourselves exhibiting, without knowledge of the origins of those behaviors. Before I had finished the book, not only was the premise "we are all in shock" acceptable; I was also self-administering some of the treatments.
This book gifts the reader with clues about how and when one might have experienced shock in one's personal life, and then provides specific instruction for how to heal.
The style of the book is both narrative and instructional. In addition to case histories, Stephanie teaches us about the identifiable symptoms of shock, and then instructs the reader as to which points on the meridians to hold to begin to resolve specific issues. In this way, the reader can begin to treat oneself, in a `learn-as-you-go' format. It works very well, and sufficient charts are provided to facilitate the process.
A sufficient amount of time and space in the book are also allocated to acquaint us with the two presentations of shock: sympathetic and parasympathetic-in layman's terms. We learn practical tools for recognizing and addressing each type, including the language that can assist the process of resolution. As we engage in the healing journey with Dr. Mines, we become aware that perhaps, through Jin Shin TARA, we have simple, practical tools, with which we can treat ourselves, as well as members of our families and communities.
We Are All In Shock empowers you with knowledge and the tools to heal. Dr. Mines skillfully mentors you along the path. I highly recommend the journey...

Book Description
On steamy Pryan, never-ending sunlight and plentiful rain have created a jungle so vast that humans and elves dwell high in the trees and only dwarves live anywhere near the ground. From the treetops the aristocratic elves sell weapons to the other races, whose incessant warfare sends a steady steam of profits and essential resources skyward. Now, generations of dissent and race hatred will not heal -- not even under the threat of annihilation at the hands of legendary Titans. Armed with little more than their wits and prophecy, an elf, a human, and a dwarf must unite to try to save the world from destruction.

Part of one of the greatest series of fantasy books every written.......2007-08-07
In this sequel to Dragon Wing, Haplo moves on to the second of the four worlds created by the Sartan, Pryan, the world of fire. But, things are working differently than Haplo ever expected. Doom and disaster are coming to those mensch (humans, elves and dwarves) he has found, and to make matters worse there's a crazy old wizard who predicted Haplo's coming and has proclaimed him the people's savior. Just what is going on in this strange world, and where are the Sartan, the hated enemies of the Patryns? Once again, something has gone terribly wrong.
This is an excellent book, part two of one of the greatest series of fantasy books every written. I first read this book when it came out in 1991, and every few years I read it again - it's that good! I love books that include elves, dwarves and wizards, but this series takes that genre and moves it in a direction you might have never expected. I love the fascinating worlds that the authors created, and also the interesting characters and institutions that fill them.
Overall, I think that this is one of the greatest series of fantasy books, if not the greatest. I highly recommend this book, and the other six that make up the series. Believe me, they are well worth your time!
Amazed.......2007-07-09
I have read the entire cycle twice and I do admit the after the exciting and exhilarating ending of the last book this one seemed to start out real slow. BUT then I realized that it is getting you in the mind-set of the unknowing characters before chaos comes to town. With all the excitement that all the other books of the series has it also has love, lust, and passion thrown in too! Again I must advise this WARNING - this collecting is addicting!
Elven Star - Great Book...Not one to be skipped!!!!.......2006-02-21
Like most people who browse Amazon, I like to read the reviews on whatever I'm looking at. While considering reading the Death Gate Cycle, I looked through the reviews. A lot of them said this was an "Eh" book and should be skipped. Reading reviews that say this made me a bit nervous about the series, but my friend (who had already read the entire series), pushed me to begin reading them. And I'm glad I did. I read Dragon Wing and immediatly went out and got Elven Star. But remembering all those reviews made me anxious about reading it. I read it, and as soon as I got into it I was so glad I read it and didn't skip it.
Elven Star takes place on Pyran, The Realm of Fire. Elves, Humans, and Dwarves live alone, avoiding contact with the other races, making contact only when needed. The main characters in this story (besides Haplo, who comes in later) are a family of Elves who sell arms to Humans and Dwarves. Rumors start flying around Pyran that some mythical creatures called "Tytans" are attacking and destroying cities to the North. The story then progresses and leads to a satisfying conclusion. The ending is a bit confusing, but it is all clarified in Haplo's letter to the Lord of the Nexus at the end of the book.(Sorry about the vague plot details, I don't believe in spoiling the plot for people.)
The story is not just filler, as some people say, because it provides some much needed answers to some questions opened up in Dragon Wing. It answers what the Labyrinth is and what the Death Gate is. The story is interesting and gripping as soon as you get into it. I'll admit, the beginning isn't WHAM POW WOW! shocking, gripping fast, but it gets the concepts of the story introduced.
Elven Star, although not as good as Dragon Wing, is still an excellent book, which should not be skipped if you enjoyed Dragon Wing at all. So please read and enjoy this amazing second entry in the Death Gate Cycle series.
PS: As always, read the appencicies at the end...They're important!
A decent second book.......2005-09-06
As you read along in the series and get to books six and seven, you get this funny feeling of nostalgia for a time in the series before all hell breaks loose and this book is it. No, nothing of any signifigance to the overall plot of the series is really brought to bear and it could be justifiably called 'filler' but if you're gonna read any of these books you should just read them all in the order they were written. Also, Zifnab is introduced in this book and he is far and away my favorite character in any book ever... but that's just me. Zifnab fan club anyone?
Don't even bother, skip this and move onto 3.......2005-07-30
First, I will tell you how to get the most enjoyment out of this series. Start with going to the library and renting all of these books. Do not buy them as they are not worth it. Then read books 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7 without reading the footnotes or the appendixes. You have the option of reading books 2 and 5 if you are really enjoying the series, but they are only filler and do not even need to be skimmed. Finally, accept the fact that Weis and Hickman may only be one hit wonders and move on.
Second, I write reviews for those who seek good fantasy and not for the zealots who hang on every Weis and Hickman word. You would think from some of the reviews of this series that these books were greater than War and Peace and written by Bronte and Conrad. In reality, this series is not very good. I am not trying to trash Weis and Hickman, I found the Dragon Lance series to be extremely enjoyable and would give at least the first two series of that line four stars. This series deserves no more than 2 stars. The books are incomplete thoughts that may have been much better had the authors taken more time to flesh out the story. Beware of fantasy books that contain footnotes and appendixes. Usually, these are the telltale signs of poor writing. Having said that, I did manage to read most of these seven books and here are some thoughts.
Many reviewers have made a lot of the fact that Xar is actually tsar or czar. I fail to see the significance here. Xar is a ruler and a tsar is a ruler. So what? What I found to be much more interesting and ultimately distracting was the use, by the authors, of the word mensch. Mensch is a Hebrew word. It is not close to a Hebrew word, it is a Hebrew word. If you look it up, mensch means a person of integrity and honor. What are the authors trying to say here? That all people without ambition or power are full of integrity and honor. I read all seven books trying to understand the use of this word to no avail.
Not surprising considering the books are filled with errors and inconsistencies. Some of these errors and inconsistencies are no doubt addressed in the footnotes and appendixes, but it would take an additional seven books to address all the problems. I believe that most of these problems occurred because the authors did not take the time to complete their work. Perhaps they were pressured by their publisher.
Most of the characters are thinly veiled shadows of those characters from the Dragon Lance series. Only, these characters are not as interesting or as engaging. Part of the problem is that Weis and Hickman never determine where they want the story to go. They blur the line between good and evil, then they erase the line, then they re-draw the line in bold. In Dragon Lance, it was intriguing to see how the characters dealt with the discovery of the duality of their own nature. In this book it is just confusing.

The Rogue Trooper...
Book Description
In early modern Spain the monarchy's universal policy to convert all of its subjects to Christianity did not end distinctions among ethnic religious groups, but rather made relations between them more contentious. Old Christians, those whose families had always been Christian, defined themselves in opposition to forcibly baptized Muslims (moriscos) and Jews (conversos). Here historian Benjamin Ehlers studies the relations between Christians and moriscos in Valencia by analyzing the ideas and policies of archbishop Juan de Ribera.
Juan de Ribera, a young reformer appointed to the diocese of Valencia in 1568, arrived at his new post to find a congregation deeply divided between Christians and moriscos. He gradually overcame the distrust of his Christian parishioners by intertwining Tridentine themes such as the Eucharist with local devotions and holy figures. Over time Ribera came to identify closely with the interests of his Christian flock, and his hagiographers subsequently celebrated him as a Valencian saint.
Ribera did not engage in a similarly reciprocal exchange with the moriscos; after failing to effect their true conversion through preaching and parish reform, he devised a covert campaign to persuade the king to banish them. His portrayal of the moriscos as traitors and heretics ultimately justified the Expulsion of 1609--1614, which Ribera considered the triumphant culmination of the Reconquest.
Ehler's sophisticated yet accessible study of the pluralist diocese of Valencia is a valuable contribution to the study of Catholic reform, moriscos, Christian-Muslim relations in early modern Spain, and early modern Europe.
