Book Description
Between the seemingly impossible tasks of living up to his warrior-father's legend and surmounting his own physical limitations, Miles Vorkosigan faces some truly daunting challenges.
Shortly after his arrival on Beta Colony, Miles unexpectedly finds himself the owner of an obsolete freighter and in more debt than he ever thought possible. Propelled by his manic "forward momentum," the ever-inventive Miles creates a new identity for himself as the commander of his own mercenary fleet to obtain a lucrative cargo; a shipment of weapons destined for a dangerous warzone.

Miles Naismith Vorkosigan comes of age. After failing the Barrayaran Military Academy physicals, the brittle-boned, dwarfish son of Cordelia and Aral Vorkosigan uses a clever touch of creativity to finance a shipment of munitions into a war zone. When the simple merchant expedition draws the attention of an unexpected enemy, Miles is forced to masquerade as commander of a fictional fleet of hired guns he names after the mountains near his home--the Dendarii Mercenaries. His original crew of misfits grows into a considerable force as enemies become allies, guided by the delicate political maneuverings Miles learned from his father. Locus Poll Award Nominee

My first Bujold book, which definitely won't be my last!.......2007-09-29
On Barrayar, imperfect children aren't wanted. The planet's feudalist legal system and its culture of self-reliance would make life impossibly difficult for a physically or mentally handicapped Human, even if the parents of such a child were willing to endure the stigma of keeping and rearing it. Yet Lord Aral Vorkosigan, heir to a seat on the Council of Counts, and his off-world born wife chose to continue her pregnancy with a son they knew had been severely damaged in utero. Now that son, Miles, is nearly 18 years old and their only offspring. The old count, his grandfather, refused to give the newborn Miles his name; but that can't stop Miles from inheriting the title one day, and the young man desperately wants to live up to all the expectations that being the future Count Vorkosigan carries. So he takes the entrance exams to enter officer training for Barrayar's military, as tradition requires. The academic exams he aces. The physical one lasts about five minutes, because his brittle bones shatter when he attempts the course's first obstacle. So home Miles must go, in failure, to heal (again - how many times does this make?) and to contemplate his future. If he can't emulate his father and his grandfather, what can he do? Is it even worth the trouble to try?
On a visit to his mother's far more egalitarian home-world, accompanied by his armsman Bothari (who's been his constant companion and protector since birth) and by Bothari's beautiful and motherless daughter, Miles can't ignore a fellow Human in desperate trouble. He brings his title and his wealth, as much of that wealth as a young man decades away from his inheritance can command, to bear; and he soon finds himself on the run, with a disapproving Bothari in tow. Not long after that he's running a mercenary fleet, making up a new persona under his mother's maiden name as he goes along.
"Coming of age" novels are a dime a dozen, as the cliche puts it, but this one's an excellent read. Bujold's future universe rings true in both tone and detail, and the tests real life throws at Miles reveal his character - to the young man himself, as well as to those around him - in wonderfully realistic fashion. Highly recommended!

Disabled kid masters military and manipulation.
Miles Vorkosigan is a teenager afflicted with fragile bones and other physical problems because he mother was poisoned when he wasn't born yet.
Living on a gung-ho must look pretty for the part military world is a problem given he is a noble type.
A combination of military sf of the more Ender's Game or Phule's company variety than kill 'em all space marines, and period romance, which gets rather tedious at times when that part is overdone.

Well, if you are reading this review to decide whether to get WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE, you are the luckiest person I know. If you are familiar with Ms. Bujold's writing and you are reading to see whether you agree with what I say, here we may differ.
Lois McMaster Bujold is one of the great writers: her language pours down the page, enticing and encircling you, not letting you get away. In fact, it's alsmost impossible to put her books down for me, even after reading and re-reading them dozens of times.
Miles Naismith Vorkosigan is her finest creation. He is a fully-realized character in this book, and he continues to grow, and show us hidden little gems of himself in her further volumes.
Only a brave author would create a character that has such obvious flaws. Since it is clear just how brave some of her characters are, she may simply be writing about what she knows.
Miles is human, most of all; he isn't some ficticious perfect little hero. He knows both success and failure, pain and bliss, disaster and luck. In fact, he is more real in his first book than some characters who've been penned dozens of times. My personal belief is that this sureness and realness comes from his author.
Since this is the first (or second, or third, depending on how you count) book in the series, Ms. Bujold and Miles both have a lot to do not only to establish Miles as a person, but also to show off his abilities still half-trained: can he handle a blocade? Can he handle murderous half-bandit mercenaries? Can he handle a planetary war?
Piffle, you might say. Well, I'd like to see you do it at 4'10"-ish, with a crooked spine, at 17, with nothing more than your wits and a couple of loyal hearts. And, most importantly, do it all and make sure your parents (a de-facto ruler of an empire and his smarter, stronger wife!) don't find out. Then you can say "piffle" all you want.
As a way to get one hooked on Miles and Bujold, this is an exquisite trap. Bujold's mastery of language, nuance, and character definition will sweep you away. Her gentle humor, Miles's ironic and dry wit, and the sheer scope of the canvas will enthrall even the most casual SciFi reader. But in the end, Bujold's talent captures the hearts of most who delve into this wonderful book.
Will you be next?
Great space opera.......2005-10-15
This is just plain good fun. Our Hero washes out of the military academy for medical reasons beyond his control - nearly a disgrace to his near-royal family.
If he can't get into the Space Army, then he'll just make his own. In a series of improbable events, Miles starts by saving a drunken fellow countryman, washed up on an alien shore. After just a few months, he's worked his way up to command of a mercenary space fleet of his own, recruiting his former opponents (for a paycheck), and using the thousands of soldiers in his private army to ending a destructive civil war. It's an enjoyable, feel-good swashbuckler in a modern style.
I can't imagine why books in this series haven't been made into movies. I guess it's because Bujold's perfect balance of humor, heroism, and headlong adventure would be too hard to maintain. Too bad, I guess you'll just have to read the book!

"Things like this never happened to Vorthalia the Bold!".......2005-07-05
Seven years later and this is still my favorite book; Fun, funny, thrilling and wondrous. "The Warrior's Apprentice" was the first and still remains the best work of Lois McMaster Bujold (and for this lady that is saying something).
Meet Miles Vorkosigan: Eighteen, crippled, tiny, and what can only be called a genius of life. After failing to get into officer's school, he goes to visit his grandmother (living in another solar system) for a cheering up, and comes back the general of his own private army.
Everything is between is sheer roller-coaster bliss, with twists and turns galore. Wonderfully crafted characters, sharp dialogue, a nice mix of sci-fi and fantasy and a sense of triumph lacing throughout, this book made Bujold a star and never was the status so well deserved.
I was introduced to "Apprentice" by a good friend who told me "Prepare to fall in love" and that Bujold could make a deformed dwarf a sex symbol is a tribute to her powers. Once you read this you'll surely want to read the sequels, and while they vary in quality ("Borders of Infinity" is my favorite) Miles himself always remains the star attraction. One in a thousand and not to be missed.
(Also check out the story of Lord and Lady Vorkosigan's romance in the excellent "Shards of Honor".)

Terrible.......2007-08-31
This is an interpretive book, written and presented by Gary Gagliardi, loosely based on Sun Tzu's classic material.
Mr. Gagliardi attempts to apply the lessons of Sun Tzu's The Art of War to business practice and corporate thought, based on his understanding of the work, as well as his background in sales, marketing and management theory. The problem with Mr. Gagliardi's writing style is he continually asserts that he is the foremost authority on Sun Tzu's material outside of China - particularly in the area of applying the lessons to competition. These messages permeate all of his books, as well as his website. He is not. In fact, he is far from it.
The book contains what the author asserts is the most accurate translation of Sun Tzu's work ever attempted. This description of the text is highly debatable, based on the merits of the text itself. Mr. Gagliardi achieved his translation using an internet encarta program, in which you can do a simplified character search in Chinese, and see some of the interpretive meanings of each pictogram. Based on Mr. Gagliardi's word choices, the author appears to have selectively chosen what he believes to be the correct English terms, and these results are often wrong. Since he has no formal training or background in reading / translating Chinese, this comes as no surprise.
While the original text of The Art of War is profound on countless levels, and the basic tenants of Sun Tzu have been successfully applied to areas such as business for years... quite simply, Mr. Gagliardi's version of these theories are less than insightful, not very original, and are often flat out wrong - even when he attempts to present them as business lessons.

Book Description
As war clouds loom in Europe, David Harrison enters the United States Military Academy at West Point in the summer of 1912. The major thread of the story traces his effort to make sense out of his passion for flight, his extraordinary intuition, the ideals of West Point and a prospective career in the Army. A secondary theme is the development of the airplane for combat. During the summer of 1915, one year before his graduation, the two themes become entangled. Major Billy Mitchell sends David to London to discover what military airpower is all about. He visits factories and front line squadrons, meets designers and pilots. Suddenly, everything he believes about himself and his future is challenged one July afternoon when he witnesses death in the skies of France....

Are we there yet?.......2006-09-07
Reviewed by Ronald J. Martin for Reader Views (08/06)
We have all probably been asked the question, "Are We There Yet?", sometime in our lives, but if you want to put every long road trip into perspective then look no further than Edward Braddock's attempt at crossing `that small mountain range' on his way to the Ohio Forks. Braddock is a new player in the Neophyte Warrior Series; a collection of books that center on George Washington's early life and his experiences in the French and Indian War.
Edward Braddock is the English government's answer to the French challenge for power in America. Braddock is no spring chicken, but the main concern with the mission is to keep the budget as small as possible so there is no need to send a five star general. In fact despite a high rank, Braddock has never actually been in combat (very similar to Washington's experience one year earlier).
"The Lion's Apprentice" is another great addition to this series. This book doesn't have much action in it but focuses on the slow, long, painstaking journey that the military attempts. The depth of character development makes up for any lack of battles and engagements.
The main character, George Washington, has finally made it into the British forces after resigning from the Virginia Militia, albeit as a courtesy rank of `aide-de-camp'. After his defeat at Great Meadows his knowledge of the land and `wilderness battle tactics' are considered a welcomed addition to the British troops, which have been hurled into the new world.
The English just cannot imagine that such vast expanses of thick trees, brush, and tall mountains can exist and go on for what seems like forever. Braddock even had the preposterous notion of trying to travel in his horse drawn carriage on what could be barley called a foot trail - definitely not a road. It all looked so easy when examining the maps back at the headquarters in England. After crossing hill after hill and going over or around mountain after mountain: the patience and energy of many is exhausted. Which leads to both commanders and troops asking the same question; "Are we there yet?"
I really enjoyed this novel. Richard Patton has created a very entertaining story. None of the previous characters are left out; the lives of Stump Neck, Old Smoke, Sally Fairfax and others are all included in this book and really help to add different perspectives to the story.
After reading the third book it has now become apparent to me that each book in the series is not meant to stand alone. So before jumping ahead to this one, I would recommend that readers check out "His Majesty's Envoy" and "The Reluctant Commander", books 1 and 2 respectively.
This book is a great build up for the inevitable conflict between the English, French, and Indians and does a good job of keeping the readers interest.

I chose the first volume in this series, His Majestyýs Envoy (also reviewed on this site) as my choice for the best general historical novel of 2002. I read a lot of novels each year so this is no light thing. On finding out that this series is about the early campaigns of George Washington you might be wondering why I call it a general novel rather than a military one and the answer is simple; it has much broader appeal than that.
Following closely on from The Reluctant Commander (this is not a book to be read as a standalone novel) Washington is feeling disenchanted with military life and also being blamed for the death of Jumonville. He vows to settle down and be a farmer, still spending much time with the married Sally Fairfax but such is not to be. Across the ocean in England the Duke of Cumberland has decided to send out his own man to settle the question of the French once and for all. His choice is the elderly Major General Edward Braddock, an unremarkable career soldier who was lately in Gibralter. The greatest part of this novel deals with his progress towards the field of battle and leader of a strange cavalcade of soldiers, wives and wagons as they try and scale the Allegheny Mountains and penetrate a vast forest.
It is a great measure of Pattonýs skill as a writer that this novel, very much an interim volume between one battle and the next, isnýt boring. True, it isnýt as exciting as the first two books but reading about the remarkable ignorance of the English about the American terrain and the comical progress (or lack of it) of the seemingly unsuitable Braddockýs ýarmyý makes a fascinating tale. Perhaps it is true that it is easy to think of writing about Washingtonýs early campaigns, and this isnýt the first book I have read that deals with them. It is however the first that gives a multi-viewpoint look at events, and the thing that lifts it head and shoulders above where it could have been for me is Pattonýs insights into the characters both real and fictional and the addition of the Native American viewpoint. There is the nadir of both native and white civilization in the shape of the enigmatic sadist Buffalo Hair and the insane Stump Neck contrasted with the believable humanity of Washington and Old Smoke. This series gives as good a descripton of life in the ýIndianý villages as it does of Washingtonýs campaigns. Like a good soap opera we are left wondering too what it to become of the wealthy and brave Robert Stobo and the basically decent Contrecoeur. I said before that this is Robert J Conley and James Carlos Blake rolled together for that mix of uncompromising grittiness, readability and historical verisimilitude. I hope that Book IV, Massacre of the Forks isnýt too long in coming. Very highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A Sequel That Will Not Disappoint!.......2006-12-13
This a sequel that is just as wonderful as the first book! I loved Echoes in the Mist. Blayne Cooper delivers another passionate thriller. Echoes begins where Cobb Island leaves off without missing a beat. Join Kayla Redding and Oliva Hazelwood in spirited Edinburg,Scotland. They will start their new career together as partners in paranormal research. I don't think Liv knows what she signed up for but, Kayla believes in Liv's abilities. While they are investigating a haunted hotel, they also get to hear more Redding/Cobb family history from a very loveable character named Badger. Badger informs Kayla and Liv of what happened to Bridget Redding and Faylinn Cobb after the night Bridget was branded a witch and Faylinn's husband wound up dead. Did I mention that these women lived in the 17th century? Echoes has great characters, a good plot that is able to stand on it's own, wicked humor, love, lust, hot sex(even if it is between dead chicks!) and ghosts?...maybe...maybe not! This book also gives hope that our spirits will never die and we will walk hand in hand with the love our lives through the mist of eternity. This is a sequel worth reading! You won't be disappointed! This book will stay in my collection to read again. Blayne Cooper is turning out to be one of my favorite authors and I look forward to reading more from her.
Loved this book!.......2006-08-30
I loved this book and was sad when it ended. I agree with the reviewer who said this sequel is even better than Cobb Island, which is saying a lot since Cobb Island is excellent. Love these characters, I felt as if they were real people and good friends. If you like steamy romance, lite comedy and a good mystery, then you'll love this book.
Romance, Mystery, Intrigue... What More Could A Reader Want?.......2006-01-30
In this sequel to 'Cobb Island,' Kayla Redding and Olivia Hazelwood continue their adventures together in Edinburgh Scotland, solving a "haunting" mystery and learning more about Kayla's ancestors, Bridget and Faylinn.
This book is more than a double-romance (i.e., Kayla/Liv and Bridget/Faylinn), it's a mystery too. Kayla and Liv have been hired to determine if a ghostly presence in one of Edinburgh's historical mansions is real or a hoax. While there, they visit the descendants of Bridget and Faylinn - most of their time is spent with Badger, a man who tells the story of the deceased lovers. When not with Badger, they explore each other and study the ghost in the mansion. There is more than one twist in the last few chapters... only one of which this reader anticipated.
Cooper does a masterful job bringing life to all the characters in the book. Her talent brings two complete romances in one book, and this reader was able to follow the transition between the two stories easily.
Great book, even better than the first in the series. Highly recommended, as are all of Cooper's books.
This book has it all !.......2005-10-02
Wonderful romantic comedy that evolves into a mystery wrapped around a dramatic romance set in colonial Virginia. The reader is treated to two sets of very interesting women. Delightful humor is sprinkled throughout this story. An endearing romance keeps you turning the page well past the time your eyes want to you call it quits for the night. I loved the surprise at the end!
Amazing!!!.......2003-02-05
I was so impressed with this book and Cobb Island that comes before it. Cooper's writing is magnificient. I could not read these books fast enough. I was reading every spare second that I had and still could not get enough. I wanted this story to go on and on. I want MORE!! I want these stories to keep going, so I can keep reading. I have never read a story that kept me wanting more. The characters become so personal. You learn so much about them. It's like reading about someone you know like your bestfriend. When I was reading I would laugh with them, cry with them, and feel for them over all. I would stop reading my book to run in the other room to tell my partner what had just happened, like she should know these people in real life.
Needless to say, these are WONDERFUL books !! You will love them !

Customer Reviews:
Another fantastic story by a great author!.......2006-12-01
This is another great Kane story! It is the prequel to Wishes in the Wind, so read this one first! I loved the interaction between Trenton and Ariana, and I loved the trust that he had in her. It is so wonderful to see an emotionally scarred person healed by love! Even when she is forced to leave him, she makes sure that he knows that it is not by her choice, that she still loves him very much, and she wants him to come get her. I love Andrea Kane's heros! (Her heroines are good to, but the heros take the cake!)
INTENSELY COMPELLING!.......2003-04-29
For 6 long years, Trenton Kingsley, Duke Of Broddington, has awaited the day when he could avenge his beloved father's death. Returning from self-imposed exile, he strikes at the man he holds responsible - Baxter Caldwell - at his most vulnerable moment and walks away with Baxter's innocent 18 year old sister, Ariana.
Ariana, forced to marry the man whom she has been led to believe was somehow to be blamed for her elder sister's apparent suicide 6 years before, is caught in a voltex of a devious and malicious deception. While Ariana is irresistibly drawn to her husband's passionate and gentle nature, she must resolve the mystery that shrouds the past in order to have a future together. And in uncovering the truth, it became apparent that her brother is involved in a nefarious scheme to exact the ultimate vengeance at the expense of her happiness.
Echoes In The Mist is a captivating romance culminating in a stunning revelation that's bound to keep the reader glued until the last page is turned.
Andrea Kane writes a convincing transition of Trenton's character from darkly menacing to gentle loving husband and Ariana is not merely the sweet innocent that's portrayed initially but a fiercely determined woman who's so much in love with her husband.
A Touching Story.......2002-04-21
Trenton Kingsley is a haunted soul looking for the time that he can avenge things that were done to his family.
Ariana is a naive but sweet girl who still believes in the good of people. She is also just what Trenton needs.
Ariana's past is connected to Trenton's past in a way that she is about to find out in a shocking way. Trenton sees one of the ways to pay back her brother is to have the queen order Ariana to become his wife. She does marry Trenton and begins to tame the demons that haunt him. This story is about two people who are both strong and and protective. It is also about faith in love and in each other.
This is classic Andrea Kane at her best. Don't miss this one.
Amazing Love Story.......2002-03-16
This is my second book my Andrea Kane and I just loved it. The way she developed the love between Trenton and Ariana was wonderful. Ariana was a great female character. The way she stood by Trenton even when her brother tried to make him look bad in her eyes was heartwarming. Trenton was a wonderful man because no matter how mad he got he was always able to let it go so that he wouldn't hurt Ariana. Great job!!
Echos in the Mist is a winner.......2001-05-06
This is one of my favorite Andrea Kane books. The story of Trenton and Ariana is great. Both are characters that you can care about. Trenton falls in love with Ariana despite her family connection to his enemy. There is tenderness to their love which I feel is an Andrea trademark. Ariana is naive but not to naive. There is goodness in her that draws Trenton. There is also suspense which causes this book to be quite the page turner. Plus you get to know his brother who has his own story Wishes in the Wind. If you have not yet read an Andrea Kane book this is a good one to introduce you to the magic that I feel is Andrea Kane.

Book Description
ECHOES FROM THE MIST A town and a nation rise from the ashes of the Civil War. The dramatic sequel to ECHOES OF THE FALLING SPRING. Ford McKenzie, a Southern Captain during the Civil War, has returned to Chambersburg, the only Northern town burned by the Confederates, to marry a local girl, Abby Kennedy. Here, they struggle with the psychological impact of the war upon their personal lives. Coping with grief inflicted by disease, murder and infidelity, tension heightens as the local railroad, represented by Abby's brother-in-law, attempts to run tracks through the heart of the McKenzie farm. Amanda, the illegitimate daughter of Abby's sister, and Michael, Ford's half-breed son, fall in love. Their blossoming romance is interrupted when Amanda enters Wilson College, and Michael searches for his heritage in the South. The North/South prejudice, the White/Indian bias, the death of a child, murder, betrayal of family members, lasting love, and reconstruction after war come together to make this an unforgettable story.

Book Description
These devotions inspired by ancient Shinto rituals are a series of calls-and-response that directly address the awesome power of the natural world to heal and restore the soul. Readers are invited to stand before rivers, stones, and trees, to listen to thunder, and to be touched by the wind and rain in order to cultivate a spirit of reverence for Nature and awaken the cosmic content within the human. Included are steps for conducting misogi (waterfall purification) and resources for learning more about Shinto practice in North America.
Stuart Picken, an ordained minister, has taught religion in Japan since 1972 and is international adviser to the High Priest of Tsubaki Grand Shrine. He is author of Essentials of Shinto.
Customer Reviews:
Well done.......2007-05-13
This book was very well done, and I have found it quite useful.
Let us pray.......2006-09-25
This was not totally what I was expecting, but that is not a bad thing. I guess I was thinking more of a book of ponderables as opposed to a devotional. That being said, this is the first Shinto related book I have read. Maybe not the best to start with if you are just beginning your journey into Shintoism. Not to say it is a bad book; perhaps as I delve more into Shintoism, I will appreciate it better (I have two or three other books on Shinto to read). But it is a good way to see how a Shinto prayer service (for lack of better terminology) would go.
It does explain how one can do these devotionals alone and how the whole waterfall ceremony works, which was very interesting. I would have to say if you are familiar with Shinto, but unfamiliar with the devotional process, pick this up, it will help. If not, shelve this book until you get more familiar.
