Book Description

The brilliant new novel from an author The New York Times has called "one of his generation's most gifted writers."

It's 1969, and Judith "Denny" Denham has just begun an affair with Dr. Ernest Wright, a psychology professor at Wellspring University, who just happens to be her boss. But her position in the Wright household is not merely as a mistress. Ernest's wife, Nancy, has taken Denny under her wing as a four-hand piano partner and general confidante, although Denny can never seem to measure up to Anne, Nancy's best friend from back east. Ernest's eldest son has fled over the Canadian border to escape the draft, while his only daughter has embarked on a secret affair with her father's protégé. The remaining son, Ben, is fifteen, and as delicate and insufferable as only a poetry-writing fifteen-year-old can be.

That autumn, Denny crosses the freeway that separates Wellspring from its less affluent mirror image, Springwell, to spend Thanksgiving with the Wrights and their assortment of strays, including two honored guests: the eagerly anticipated Anne and Anne's new husband, the acclaimed novelist Jonah Boyd. The chain of events set in motion that Thanksgiving will change the lives of everyone involved in ways that none can imagine, and that won't become clear for decades to come.

Hilarious and scorching, David Leavitt's first novel in four years is a tribute to the power of home, the lure of success, the mystery of originality, and, above all, the sisterhood of secretaries. Flawlessly crafted and full of surprises, it is a showcase for Leavitt's considerable skills.

2 out of 5 stars An Emily Litella of a Novel.......2007-01-06

You know what I mean, "Never mind!" Think the book is overwritten and laugh out loud when Ben says that his writing was overwritten? Doesn't matter. Think the book gets simple facts about the period wrong? Doesn't matter. Why? Because at the end the author takes no responsibility for the book, in a last chapter written in the same voice but a different voice. Confused enough? Hopefully, not even to waste your time on this book.

"The Body of Jonah Boyd" centers around a single Thanksgiving dinner in the late 1960's in a college town outside Los Angeles. Jonah Boyd is a writer, the second husband of Nancy Wright's best friend Ann. Ann used to play four-hand piano with Nancy until Nancy moved to the west coast, where she started playing four-hand piano with our alleged protagonist, Denny, her husband's secretary and paramour. Ann and Jonah come to visit the Wrights at Thanksgiving, during which the notebooks containing Jonah's new novel are mysteriously lost sometime around the time Jonah and the Wrights' youngest son Ben, an aspiring poet, went for a walk down the arroyo. This event was a turning point in Jonah's life, in Ann's life and in Ben's life, but not particularly in Denny's life, yet again, the reason she thought so much about it is explained in the last chapter.

I'm sure there is some literary trick going on here that makes sense to the author and his editors, but the plot and characters in this book, as well as the overwritten prose style, "no cliche goes unused", don't make it worth your time. Find something better to read. It won't be hard.

3 out of 5 stars One of his lesser efforts.......2006-08-04

Denny Denham is not only the secretary of Dr. Ernest Wright, a psychotherapist at Wellspring University, but also his lover and the best friend of his wife. Years after the 1968 Thanksgiving dinner she describes the events that took place: how the famous author Jonah Boyd and his second wife, a friend of Mrs. Wright, come for dinner and how he reads out loud part of the manuscript for his new novel. He takes the manuscript, written in leather-bound Italian notebooks, everywhere with him but the day after Thanksgiving they are suddenly lost. The whole house and surroundings are put upside down, but the notebooks remain lost: end of Jonah Boyd's career. Years later it becomes clear what happened to the notebooks and how they influenced the lifes of the people present at the dinner.

David Leavitt is a fantastic writer (The lost language of the cranes is wonderful), but this book appealed less to me. The family problems were very American and the storyline about the lost manuscript had a solution that one could see coming from a mile away. Despite all this it was a pleasant book to read during a rainy day camping.

5 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Read.......2006-01-02

I read this novel when it first came out, so I don't remember a lot of details. However, what I do remember is that I liked it enough to give it as a gift to four different individuals -- all of whom enjoyed it as much as I did.

I was actually checking out another book and this one was offered with it. Out of curiosity, I clicked on "Boyd" and was amazed to come across the recent negative reviews. This was one of the few novels I've read which, by the last page, every dangling question was answered -- sometimes in a very satisfying and surprising way.

I would recommended this book to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars Bloodless and annoying.......2005-06-27

Why were the streets in this book given names each combining two states? Florizona, for instance. Was that supposed to be funny? It was simply annoying, as was this entire book. The characters, with perhaps the exception of Boyd, were bloodless, lifeless. I had no sense that they existed beyong the moments when they appeared in the story. I couldn't wait to finish the book, not because there was any mystery to it, but because I wanted to be finished with it. I never warmed up to Ben or anyone else.

1 out of 5 stars Another case of copy-catting.......2005-02-23

Leavitt's fans may remember an episode a few years back where he was accused of plagiarizing another man's work.

I read "Jonah Boyd" and found it a decent read. On the same day I returned "Boyd" to the library, I checked out a book by Robert Grudin, titled "Book: A Novel", which predates "Boyd" by several years. After reading "Book" (which, by the way, is a great story), several similarities between the two were obvious, and not likely the result of coincidence. Maybe it's not plagiarism, but as Leavitt's prior accuser said, the least Leavitt could have done is attribute the source of the material in an acknowlegement.

Here's the things I noted:
1. Both books feature writer/professor characters caught up in university departmental politics.
2. Both books feature a primary character attempting, unsuccessfully, to round up all the published copies of another writer's work.
3. In "Boyd" streets in the university town are named by combining the first part of one state with the last part of another state. (Florilina might be a street name in "Boyd"). In "Book", the states themselves (and the state universities) have names like Washagon, or Missibama, using the same splice technique.
4. The typeface in both books is Sabon, and both have very similar "About the type" entries at the end of the book.

Here's what I think: Leavitt read "Book", and liked it so much he decided to appropriate certain things into a book of his own. Obviously this isn't plagiarism, but it sure looks like unacknowleged copy-catting to me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Fantasy.......2007-05-29

Carol Berg is a master writer. She has come up with a stand alone book with an interesting change of pace regarding dragons. if you like her other books this is good too

5 out of 5 stars Heart and Soul.......2007-01-12

Serious, heart-stopping problems, real people, genuine, deep, believable emotions--and dragons! Dragons that sing! If you're looking for chewing-gum-for-the-eyes same old same old, don't read this book, because you won't like it. If, however, you're looking for genuine magic in storytelling, you'll love it. It's ambitious; Berg's reach may sometimes exceed her grasp, but I'd rather a writer who took chances and dreamed big than someone who spat out one more tired, rehashed sword-and-sorcery whose language sounds like Miami and whose magic is just another name for cell-phones or ... Books like this are why I fell in love with fantasy.

3 out of 5 stars Inferior to previous efforts, but still worth reading.......2006-12-28

Song of the Beast is Carol Berg's follow up to the top notch Rai-Kirah fantasy trilogy. A stand-alone novel set in a completely different world; Song of the Beast explores very similar themes as the author's previous series, and is told in essentially the same way. Unfortunately the magic that made "Transformation", "Revelation", and "Restoration" work so well is mostly absent this time around, and the first three quarters of the book has a very rushed feel, as though Berg were racing to get to her twist ending. While still enjoyable as a light and quick read, Song of the Beast is what would have happened if the entire Rai-Kirah trilogy were told in one novel.

The hero of Song of the Beast, Aidan, clearly echoes Seyonne, the hero of Transformation. Both are held captive for endless years of torment and torture, certain they will never see their loved ones again, only to find an unexpected freedom. Both have lost their innocence and sense of purpose due to their captivity, and find themselves struggling to cope with worlds that have changed drastically since they were last allowed to take any sort of role in their separate societies. While Seyonne's struggle was heart wrenching and fraught with hopelessness and uncertainty, Aidan's story is much more by the numbers. The first two pages cover Aidan's confinement, escape, and travel to a nearby town. With pacing this fast, it's hard to identify with, let alone even adequately visualize, the horror that Aidan experienced in seventeen long years of imprisonment and torture. While there are flashback sequences sprinkled throughout the novel, none of them come together coherently enough to invoke the sense of despair that Transformation gave to the readers. Likewise, at no point in Song of the Beast is it ever uncertain whether Aidan will triumph in the end. It is quite obvious he will overcome all adversity and find the answer to why he has been imprisoned for so long without a trial or any sort of explanation.

The story itself focuses on Aidan's quest to discover why he was imprisoned, but uses a backdrop of war between several major nations and an internal struggle for power between Aidan's cousin, the king of Elyria, and the king's most potent fighting force, the dragon riders. There are several races depicted in the novel, all of which are basically human, but with different characteristics. For example, the Elhim all genderless and all look essentially the same, so they are able to swap places without most being able to tell the difference. The Senai are viewed as uptight nobles who are unable to dirty their own hands, while the Udema are the main workhorses of the realms. The different histories and customs of the various races are interjected during the story, which serves to draw the reader more deeply into the tale.

Just as in Berg's previous novels, this one is told from a first person perspective. While the majority of the story is told from Aidan's perspective, occasionally the point of view will switch between characters to give more insight into what's going on in any given sequence of events. This tactic actually works pretty well here, as it highlights and gives more depth to the unlikely burgeoning romance between Aidan and the female lead of the story. The romance in Song of the Beast goes a completely different direction from Berg's previous series, which was a refreshing change, as so much else is nearly identical between the two stories.

While not on par with the Rai-Kirah novels, Song of the Beast stands on it's own as an enjoyable fantasy read.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read..........2006-10-09

I started reading Carol Berg after Transformation - and I have been impressed ever since.
Song of the Beast, for the first 100 pages was some of the best storytelling I have ever read. Berg has a natural ability to make people care about characters. Here, the protagonist Aiden, is a mysterious man who has been locked up for 17 years, and forced to be completely silent for the last 7. After his mysterious release, he finds himself amongst a prostitute and an enigmatic man of another race who inexplicably wish to help him hide for his captors who now seem to want to re-imprison him.
It should be said that the book does go downhill (slightly) after the first 100 pages, and turns into a "normal great book" if that makes any sense.
We learn that Aiden is blessed by the gods to create song and rhythm that affects people in the most profound way. Unfortunately for Aiden, his songs also allow him to communicate with dragons, and that makes him a valuable commodity and a dangerous foe and there are some that wish to put him back in his dark cell.
Read this book if you liked Transformation, or just enjoy great character driven stories.

2 out of 5 stars discontinuous and dissatisfying.......2006-03-15

As it was the case in her unjustly celebrated demon trilogy, Transformation, Revelation and Restoration, the story told here by Ms Berg has an enormous potential.

Dragons are a widespread subject in fantasy fiction, almost common, but if a subject is so well loved this also means that it carries fascination with itself. Many of her ideas were interesting, convincing, some even fascinating.

I shall not say her writing is bad, that would be outright false. This novel has many good pages, where a talented writer lurks and the pacing is excellent.
It is the overall attitude which is wrong. The plot is thin and drags at times. Much attention is dedicated to the psychology of the characters, but Ms Berg is talented enough neither to avoid such pages to drag nor to reach real insight and depth. Aidan, the main one, is a brilliant, talented, cultured man, thrown by unknown hands in a dank dark hole for 17 years with no apparent reason and tortured mercilessly, then he is released with no more apparent reason: the author describes his ascent from hell achieving no punctual nor an emotionally convincing description of his tortured soul. All the villains are out of focus, even the main one who looks seldom much more than a soulless puppet.

A minor but relevant flaw is the novelisation of music, Aidan being said after all to be the greatest musician of all times. I do not know whether Ms Berg knows anything about music, I would rather say she does not; Aidan songs are invariably said to be heart ripping. No more. Never more. And I wish to know how is a teen male supposed to be able to sing beautifully and professionally when his voice (a deep voice, then a baritone to say the least) is supposedly breaking.

Ms Berg either needs a valiant co-author or to revise her skills before setting her feather to paper again.

5 out of 5 stars A Gift of Love.......2005-10-09

I have loved this Christmas carol since my children learned it in their Episcopalian school. It captures the essence of the season...giving of yourself is the most precious gift of all. Each "beast" in the stable honors the Christ child by giving of itself. What a powerful message illustrated by one of the finest authors/illustrators, Tomie dePaola. I have urged every parent I know to purchase a copy.

4 out of 5 stars Enchanting illustrations for a sweet carol.......2004-12-20

This book is an eyeful! Tomie dePaola's gorgeous illustrations to this simple story have a sort of pre-Raphaelite glow to them, and the animals' faces seem almost soulful. I also appreciated the music in the back that enabled me to sing the words rather than simply telling them. Reading the book to a one-year-old, I would prefer that more of the pictures actually show the baby Jesus rather than implying his presence, which is a little hard to explain to a very young child. But all in all, it's a lovely Christmas book for children and lovers of Christmas carols alike.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Story -- Sweet Carol.......2001-11-16

I believe this is a 12th Century French Carol -- and not an old English Carol,as stated. Well, regardless of which side of the Channel it comes from, it's charming. If ever you have the chance to hear this sung by little ones, don't miss it -- it was meant for their sweet voices.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle Christmas Lullaby.......2000-02-27

I have an old copy of this book and read it to my toddler this Christmas season. It is beautifully illustrated, with a copy of the music at the back. Highly recommended.

“Come find what you have lost...”

Heeding this cryptic message from deep space, the crew of the starship Restoration journeys from Earth to a distant planet, hoping to find humanity’s lost genetic diversity. But with the human race on the verge of extinction from the twin horrors of plague and a mysterious scourge of dark matter, how can an alien world harbor any remedies for Earth’s declining populations?

Worse, the Restoration arrives depleted: its captain is dead, its crew demoralized--except for an indomitable old woman whose power and wealth give her the privilege of naming the new captain. Anton Prados, a young, untested officer, will now preside over humanity’s first contact with an alien race. An alien race that, improbably, looks exactly like humans. Only, the Dassa possess highly unusual breeding habits--and a reproductive process that seems to be the nullification of all that is human. And they think much the same about humanity…

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars Unique, Character-Driven Sci-Fi.......2005-04-13

This is the third Kenyon novel I have read, and probably the best. She creates a wonderfully detailed world which is cinematic and compelling, and the team of crisis-stricken humans who arrive there on a desperate mission are skillfully depicted so as to draw the reader into the story.

What most captivated me -- and what kept me reading -- was the attention to character detail. I have always loved science fiction, but currently I don't find many authors who achieve this level of character development. Highly satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars The Well Built World.......2003-08-20

"The Braided World" returns us to the universe of Kenyon's "Maximum Ice," but a long time after the ending of that novel, and with none of the same characters.

Quickly, almost adventure game like, Kenyon sets the stage (you may think you've missed a novel in the sequence; you haven't), and then plunges you quickly into the world of the Dassa--humanlike, but not human, with a totally different way of reproducing.

Kenyon constructs this alien world so carefully (and with all of its beauty and all of its cruelty well thought out) that maybe you'll think she's actually been there. The characters are fascinating; the science seems plausible, and Kenyon hasn't lost her ability to do action scenes convincingly. (Some aren't for the squeamish, and definitely not for the under-13 set.)

What's most intriguing, however, is the way Kenyon turns the classic quest story on its head. When the humans find what they're looking for, and it's time to head home, some of them begin to think that perhaps that's not the best idea after all.

Read the tale; find out why.

5 out of 5 stars Another Good Book from Kay Kenyon.......2003-03-25

Kay Kenyon has established a reputation among science fiction writers for her ability to create "other worlds" that is well deserved. Less often mentioned, is her skill at developing the secondary characters in her works and how well she incorporates them into the plots. Braided World is loaded with intrigue at many levels as over a dozen characters deal with the issues of personal power, changing societies, duty, loyalty, and tolerance. The remarkable part of the novel is how clearly it depicts these issues without getting bogged down or becoming confusing. Although the book is founded on the scenario described in Kenyon's prior novel, Maximum Ice, the characters and setting are completely different. If you are getting bored with science fiction that features mostly a lot of whiz-bang and golly-gee, and want to read something that is exciting but a bit more literary, The Braided World is highly recommended.

            5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2003-03-15

Kay Kenyon immerses the reader into a lush, tropical world and alien culture. Will local politics and the actions of misguided humans prevent finding the cure that a plague-ridden earth desparately needs? If you like complex characters that you can empathize with, foreign cultures, romance, and a little action this book is for you.

            5 out of 5 stars Powerful SF.......2003-02-04

Between the deaths caused by the Black Cloud and the resulting demises caused by runaway plagues, Earth is dying. It no longer has a sufficient gene pool capable of creating a viable population. Humanity's only hope lies in a message from a planet thirty light years away stating Earth can reclaim what it has lost. Billionaire Bailey Shaw funds a ship, the Restoration, which takes people to this orb, but what they find there shocks them.

The native Dassa look human-like, but do not reproduce the same way. Women that can breed get their tongues cut out and become slaves called hoda. The Dassa is not the ones who sent the message but their creators the Quads did. Nobody alive on the planet knows where the genetic markers that earth desperately needs can be found. Unless someone uncovers the puzzle, the human race will die out.

The two races that look almost identical on the surface have very different thought processes and ways of reproducing. Both distrust one another when they first meet. The punishment the Dassa mete out to childbearing women is horrific but the Terrans can do nothing to help them. If the hoda want freedom they must fight for it on their own because the people from earth must concentrate on their prime mission of saving the species. The audience will feel that Dassa society exists and author Kay Kenyon has visited the realm she has written about in her novel THE BRAIDED WORLD, which enable the audience to experience second hand this alien but fascinating orb.

              Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "braided elastic narrow fabrics of maximum 12-inch width" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                            Book Description

This study covers the world outlook for braided elastic narrow fabrics of maximum 12-inch width across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

5 out of 5 stars The Zen of Catholicism, part IV...it's all about God.......2007-03-29

Everything I have written in reviews of Dr. Biela's other works applies to this one as well. Only more so. It seemed inconceivable to me that Dr. Biela could outdo himself after his first three masterpieces but indeed he has.

This book will give you an overwhelming appreciation of the sacraments. It will make you miss the Eucharist every minute you are not at Mass. It will make you want to rush to confession once you realize what a beautiful gift God makes available to us.

And the key thing is that it's not about us: it's all about God. I had never before received such a clear explanation of how the sacraments are only God's action. Not the priest's action-he's only a conduit. Certainly not the recipient's action-the less we actually "do" when we receive the sacraments, the more we open up to His action. There is nothing that we actively do to reach God. If only we could explain it so clearly to our Protestant brethren.

I have never been keen on seeing the work of the devil in all of our failings and Dr. Biela seems to share my point of view. In all of his books he has hardly ever mentioned Satan, if at all. Our ego is the only real barrier that separates us from God.

This book draws upon material from his previous books and I think readers will benefit most if they read them in order. But this one probably has the most practical twist and if a person was to read only one, I think this should be it. But you would be missing out on an inestimable treasure if you didn't read the others. Plus he has a fifth book out which might yet be his best. Imagine that.

5 out of 5 stars Great Spiritual Reading.......2007-01-20

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Biela takes the process of spiritual growth to a deeper level than I have experienced and raises questions that I have not encountered in traditional Christianity. In an age where much writing on spiritual topics comes from one fringe or another, Biela's approach is clearly centrist and fundamental in the best sense of that word. I could only read a few pages at a time, since his thoughts took me a while to digest. I recommend it for anyone who is serious about their spiritual development

5 out of 5 stars Nowhere to Hide.......2005-07-15

This book, Open Wide the Door to Christ, shone a bright light into some of the darkest recesses of my heart. As difficult as it has been to look at the truth I had hidden about my own weakness and sinfulness, it has also been a relief to have it brought into the light! It is a relief to know that these are the very things about me that call upon God's love and mercy. And what does it mean to follow God's will? This book shed a lot of light on that issue, as well.

                              5 out of 5 stars Three cheers for S. C. Biela!.......2005-07-15

What a gift for the year of the Eucharist! This book is a masterpiece!! Never before have I so clearly been able to understand what it means to hunger for holiness...hunger for the Euhcarist. As with S. C. Biela's other books, I experience a daily dialogue when I read a small passage and see how it applies to my every day life. Today GOD showed me how He is present in my work - calling me and inviting me to see this area of my life as a place for conversion and a place to receive His love.

For me, this book has opened my eyes to what true humility is, the importance of following GOD's will in my life, and the need to understand that GOD loves me ... before, now, and forever ... HE knows what is best and desires to lead me to Eternal joy! Thank you Mr. Biela!
