Book Description
D'Artagnan Romance III-B In March 1844 the French magazine _Le Siècle,_ printed the first installment of a story by Alexandre Dumas. It was based, Dumas claimed, on some manuscripts he had found a year earlier in the Bibliotheque Nationale while researching a history he planned to write on Louis XIV. The serial chronicled the adventures of D'Artagnan -- a young swordsman intent on joining the king's musketeers. Young D'Artagnan becomes embroiled in court intrigues, international politics, and ill-fated affairs between royal lovers. The book at hand is the second volume of the third serial. Louis XIV is well past the age where he should rule, but the ailing Cardinal Mazarin refuses to relinquish the reins of power. Meanwhile, Charles II, a king without a country, travels Europe seeking aid from his fellow monarchs. Athos still resides at La Fère while his son, Raoul de Bragelonne, has entered into the service in the household of M. le Prince. As for Raoul, he has his eyes on an entirely different object than his father -- his childhood companion, Louise de la Valliere, with whom he is hopelessly in love. Porthos, now a baron, is off on some mysterious mission along with Aramis, who is now the Bishop of Vannes. (Jacketless library hardcover.)

fantastic.......2006-06-06
I loved to read the three musketeers books but, could any one tell me which books are 1,2,3,4,5,6. I dont want to start untill i got the right order. thankyou
There was a six book.......2002-03-19
A reviewer says there are 5 books to the English translation series starting with 'The Three Musketers'. There is, or rather there was a sixth. Titled 'The Son of Porthos'. I have a very old copy of this book, but have never seen it printed in over 50 years I have been looking for it. Why? For adventure and pleasure in reading, you cannot beat Alexander Dumas and his Musketers. (The movies dont hold a candle to the books.)
The Corrected Series.......2002-03-07
For those trying to read The Musketeers Saga: I was thoroughly confused by the placement of Ten Years Later in the series and the reviews listed on this page. In the original French, there are only three (3) books - 1. The Three Musketeers 2. Twenty Years After and 3. Ten Years Later. That's it - no more. But when translated, most English editions split the behemoth Ten Years Later into a Trilogy (and some four - which make it all the more confusing!).
So the reading list should be 1. The Three Musketeers 2. Twenty Years After and 3a. The Vicomte de Bragelonne 3b. Louise de la Valliere and 3c. The Man in the Iron Mask. Five books - that's the total series!
I highly recommend the Oxford University Press': Oxford World's Classics editions - which has the complete unabridged and annotated versions of all of these books...
Book 4 in the Three Musketeers series.......1999-08-23
A fairly good book. However, very little is seen of D'Artagnan and his friends. This particular book focuses more on the court intrigues of Louis XIV. If you are a great fan of the series (six books in all), you should add this book to your collection. If you are a casual reader, you might not be as interested.

Questioning the total list of books........2003-11-19
The reviewer from Highland, Indiana has given us a list of books which I am afraid is not entirely accurate. I am currently reading Le Vicomte De Bragelonne in the original French, a book which has three installments. I also have a copy of Louise de la Valliere. The first installment of Le Vicomte De Bragelonne appears from the description to be the same as Ten Years Later. But at the end of the day you can never read too much Dumas!

Book Description
This volume is a collection of refereed expository and research articles in discrete and computational geometry written by leaders in the field. Articles are based on invited talks presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference, "Discrete and Computational Geometry: Ten Years Later", held in 1996 at Mt. Holyoke College (So. Hadley, MA). Topics addressed range from tilings, polyhedra, and arrangements to computational topology and visibility problems. Included are papers on the interaction between real algebraic geometry and discrete and computational geometry, as well as on linear programming and geometric discrepancy theory.
Book Description
The Eagles’ Brood continues the saga of the Colony known as Camulod, and the tale of the descendants of those brave Romans who forged a new way of life for the Celt and Roman peoples when the Roman legions departed Britain.
Most know the new leader of the Colony as Merlyn; all call him Commander. Cauis Merlyn Britannicus is responsible for their safety, and all look to him for guidance, leadership, justice, and salvation. It is a harsh life but a good community, and Merlyn is dedicated to spreading the influence of Roman culture beyond the Colony’s borders.
Uther Pendragon, the man who will father the legendary Arthur, is the cousin Merlyn has known and loved since they were birthed, four hours apart on the same day, the year the legions left Britain. He is the tireless warrior--the red dragon to Merlyn’s great silver bear--and between the two of them, the Colony knows few enemies.
As different as they can be, they are inseparable: two faces of the same coin. In a world torn apart by warfare and upheaval, each is the other’s certainty and guarantee of the survival of the Colony . . . until a vicious crime, one that strikes at the roots of Merlyn’s life, drives a wedge between them. A wedge that threatens the fate of a nation . . . .

Perverted sex and graphic violence for the history buff.......2007-02-13
The third book in a series that puts the myth of Camelot in a real historical context. Plenty of action and a very clever interweaving of myth and reality. The violence of the times is graphically described with lots of blood and guts being spilled. This volume includes descriptions of violent sexual perversions that you may consider unsuitable for younger readers - a thought to keep in mind if you are thinking of buying this as a gift. For adults that want an all action historical novel this will probably not disappoint. Very similar to the Bernard Cornwell series of King Alfred novels but with rather more explicit sex.
Good ideas, tiresome writing.......2006-02-17
I like what this guy is trying to do: like Tolkien, he is trying to revive a world of epic meaning. Unlike Tolkien, he writes with constant dramatics, thinly disguised allegories as characters, and frequently rambles on for dozens of pages on completely irrelevant points. The author's asides contain plenty of great information, as does the character of Merlyn, but this is often painful to read from the sheer repetition of technique and emotion...
The Eagles' Brood.......2005-07-22
Jack Whyte is a master at imparting historical data in gut-gripping fiction, even if you're not a fan of King Arthur. I loved this entire series, and have purchased it for several of my family members and friends. The whole series is an "I can't put it down" one. You'll be captivated!
Review.......2005-05-05
Jack Whyte has written another extrordinary book. The Camulod Chronicals is an asome serious and each book in it keeps getting better. With death of of Uther and the birth of Arthur, Merlyn needs to keep high hopes for his coloney. This book was hard to put down because of the vision of action. Jack whyte is a genious.
A good series gone bad.......2004-07-12
A wonderful series with outstanding military and historical foundation and detail, gone bad. The writer doesn't even seem to know his own characters anymore. The sex scenes seem like they were written by a 14 year old kid. When I began to get the distinct impression that the author had lost his way, I put the book down. As a historian, I'm disappointed that Whyte has chosen to sell out with this drivel.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A stand-alone novel set in Susan R. Matthews's critically acclaimed "Judiciary" universe, Angel of Destruction focuses on Bench officer Garol Vogel and his attempts to make peace with the Langsarik people-the people his own Judiciary drove into a life of piracy...
Customer Reviews:
A Touch of Vance in the Noir.......2002-09-28
"Angel of Destruction" is the fourth in Susan R. Matthews' "judiciary" series ("Prisoner of Conscience," "An Exchange of Hostages," "Hour of Judgment"), described by the publisher as "a stand-alone novel" in the series (which seems fair: a sequel would be fun but hardly necessary). This time out Inquisitor Andrej Koscuisko is confined to a cameo role, as the action focuses around Bench intelligence Garol Vogel (he himself had a cameo in "Judgment") who, having offered the rogue Langsariks a home of their own (while banning them from space), now has to prove they're the victims of a frameup: a group is staging bloody raids and blaming it on the Langsariks. Who are they? How are they accomplishing this? Vogel quickly forms some ideas, but proving it is another matter altogether.
The tale is told in a multi-POV noirish police procedural style manner (for that matter with some alterations it could have been set in the John Ford-John Wayne west, so readers looking for Catherine Asaro-style science lessons may be disappointed). The real perps are revealed early on and the plot centers on how they will be captured, and whether the capture will come in time to save the Langsariks. In addition to Vogel himself the action focuses on the Langsarik leader Walton Agenis, her nephew Hilton Shires, her beautiful niece Modice, rogue pilot Kazmer Daigule, Cousin Stanoczk the Malcontent, and the wounded foreman Fisner Feraltz. Ms. Matthews skillfully interweaves what the characters are saying with what they are thinking, and these characters are intelligent.
Ms. Matthews shows a great sense of place here. Although the novel jumps around quite a bit you'll always know where you are. Her descriptions of dwellings, gardens, warehouse facilities, and the like will give you a great feel for the locations. In one sequence, when Hilton, on warehouse duty, hears two apparent drunks talking nearby, you'll almost be able to smell the dust as he moves along the aisles trying to locate them among the stacks of merchandise.
By the way: The author is perhaps paying subtle tribute to Jack Vance here (he would have loved the name Fisner Feraltz, and the Langarsarik colors are "rose gold," described as a yellow-pink), although her cleancut prose style is far less ornate than The Master's. Anyhow, it's fast-paced, entertaining, and as always with Ms. Matthews very very dark.
An excellent addition to the Judiciary universe.......2002-01-01
I had been looking forward to this book since I first heard that Susan Matthews was going to do a novel that centered around Bench specialist Garel Vogel. Not only did I find him to be an interesting character during his appearance in HOUR OF JUDGMENT, but I was also looking forward to finding out more about the Judiciary universe, and from a viewpoint other than Andrej's.
ANGEL OF DESTRUCTION didn't disappoint, and in fact I think it is some of the author's best work. The plot is complex and very well laid out, and Ms. Matthews avoids the easy shortcuts that some writers occasionally resort to in order to keep their stories moving forward. In addition, the book features several engaging and well-written characters, my favorites being Vogel and the newly introduced Cousin Stanoczk (who I hope we'll be seeing more of in the future). I enjoyed ANGEL immensely, and anxiously await the arrival of Susan's next novel.
Not the best of Susan Matthews but an okay read........2001-12-09
Although this novel does stand on its own it does tie in with Ms Matthews's earlier novels with a brief appearance of the Fleet Inquisitor of several earlier novels. For fans of those early novels it is nice to have the tie.
I don't think this novel is as exciting as some of Ms. Matthew's others but it is still a good read. It is also nice not to have the serious torture violence theme as in earlier novels.
Great, but I missed Andrej.......2001-11-21
A while ago I wrote a review expressing the wish that Miss Matthews would write a book focusing more on the Bench Federation itself; and here it is. I wasn't disappointed, and the only reason I haven't given this engaging book 5 stars is because Koscuisko makes only the briefest appearance in it...
Garol Vogel (the powerful Bench Intelligence Specialist first encountered in 'Hour of Judgement') has arranged for the Langsariks, an outlaw race, to come into the Bench fold. However, outside forces are working against the Langsariks, attempting to frame them for unspeakable crimes against Jurisdiction. Vogel has to track down the guilty parties before the Bench turns its considerable might against the Langsarik settlement.
This is an intelligent, sometimes gripping read and, because this is the Bench we're talking about, you can't be sure until the very end whether or not there'll be a happy ending. Admittedly, there's less emotional depth than in the three previous books, but there's perhaps more story; it's likely to appeal to people who were put off by the violence of the Koscuisko books.
Another view of the judiciary world.......2001-10-25
This book provides another view of the Judiciary world the author has created. It is no less intense and interesting. I enjoy reading the story and the moral choices that the main character has to make. Although I was eager to read the continuation of the story line from her previous books, I am glad that the author broadened the scope of her fictional world. I hope that all of these plot lines are going to join togather in the near future. Great job.

Harold Camping has it 100% RIGHT.......2007-08-13
This is nothing more than a sad attepmt to hold on to traditional ideas. However the Bible is the LIVING WORD, constantly revealing itself. Can anybody deny that the church is DEAD. The catholic church paid out over $1 BILLION in pedophile claims in Los Angeles alone and tens of BILLIONS worldwide. Meanwhile the episcopal church is ordaining lesbians and gays right and left, as well as making an unqualified person their presiding bishop???
Does not understand scripture........2006-01-25
Mr. Duncan who is a "Theologian" is surprisingly weak on his understand of doctrines.
First of all he states some of the scriptures Harold Camping uses to teach what he believes the Bible teaches but does not address these scriptures in this pamphlet. Secondly, he believes the church is the outward corpororate representation of the "True Invisible Church" therefore setting up a straw man to knock it down.
Then again what should we expect from a 59 page response to a 500 page book. Don't waste your money.
does not address the teaching with scripture.......2005-08-13
Scriptural support is lacking in the rebuttal. Many seemingly practical reasons given but the wisdom of men is foolishness to God.Typical seminary response lacking scriptural substance.
Carefully read this and compare the conclusions to Scripture.......2005-06-17
This book may be worth reading. However, I have NOT read this book and, therefore, can not state emphatically one way or the other. Albeit, I have read the endorsement to this book by Dr. White who wrote his own rebuttal against Mr. Camping's teachings (which I did read).
I was unable to find any truly Scriptural support to Dr. White's arguments against Mr. Camping's teachings and, therefore, am cautious when I see that he is used to endorse this book.
Again, no matter which teachings of man you read, I encourage each reader to compare them with Scripture. Also, it would be wise to make sure that the rebuttals to teachings of any individual are accurately reporting the teachings that they are refuting. For instance, many say Mr. Camping is teaching that because the Bible teaches that the "Church is Dead" (the physical church), that he is also saying, in essence, that the gates of hell have overcome the church. However, Mr. Camping is teaching that the true believers, who make up the true Church (which is not a building made with the hands of men and is eternal in nature), will never be overrun by Satan. Mr. Camping uses Scripture alone as his source of truth, and indeed, encourages his listeners to check him out in the Bible.
Although this is not necessarily the nature of the argument in this book, I truly urge all readers of this book to check out the statements of these authors against the Holy Writ--The Bible.
Useful analysis of a heretical doctrine.......2005-04-23
The authors have produced a concise rebuttal to the prophetic utterances of Harold Camping, one of the leaders of the Family Radio Worldwide, and the Family Radio's School of the Bible. In short, the authors clearly demonstrate that Harold Camping is a false prophet. Camping is a date-setter for the end of the world (who was clearly wrong!), and with his "leave the churches" diatribe, Camping has placed his prophetic utterances above the written Word of God. This is a shame because he appears to teach the Gospel on his website.
The authors make short work of Camping's ridiculous claims. In fact, Camping's claims are so outrageous that isn't very hard to do! But Duncan and Talbot do it with both logic and Scripture. Their arguments are sound, easy to follow, and don't resort to name calling. There are even some nice lessons about the function of the church that could be useful for a Bible study.
The book is obviously not for everyone since it is focused upon a singular topic. I found the book researching the Family Radio School of the Bible, which has an outreach into prisons.
The only complaint I have with the book is what I perceive to be replacement theology; somehow the church has replaced Israel. The authors are very knowledgeable but don't seem to have a strong foundation in the Jewish roots of Christianity. Still the book has uses because it provides some good teaching on the Church and a good (overall) response to a heretical teaching.
