Book Description

Set in World War II Lowell, Massachusetts, Alice Barton's engrossing first novel portrays time and place as integral to the coming of age of Honey Lee Murphy caught in the complexities of family relationships that are strained by her religious, regional, parental and class identifications. But these identifications by no means overpower the truly magical individuality of Barton's characterizations. Barton manages to compose her characters out of themes derived from a deeply lived experience of Catholicism, the overwhelming emotional involvement of first love, memories of a much loved father who is a casualty of war and the harsh but devoted ways of a grandmother. The mounting suspense crests as Honey Lee works to resolve conflicts that are both inner and outer. Barton's delicate handling of tension is both dramatic and insightful. I was unable to put South Station down.
Rosamond Rosenmeier, Lines Out (Alice James Books)

I was struck by the importance—the human complexity—of the moment of history Barton chooses to focus on in her first novel, South Station. She has a surefooted fictional sense. Carefully crafted scenes and memorable characters drive the plot to a powerful climax.
Fred Marchant, Tipping Point and Full Moon Boat (Greywolf Press)

Barton's South Station has a “read me” plot. She creates characters complex in themselves and deftly handles their complicated relationships. Barton's assured command of setting and the rare pureness of her prose make South Station a delight.

5 out of 5 stars insightful and enchanting journey .......2005-09-08

While reading South Station last week, I was repeatedly jarred into
the realization that this novel captured the forgotten essence of war and its cascading effects on those involved, as well as the generations that follow.

It was an enchanting read with magnetic characterizations. The palpable triumphs and losses of these WWII families are presented in a gripping and honest manner. It was extremely difficult to leave the story .

I am looking forward to sharing this great read withmy book club.

5 out of 5 stars ALICE BARTON- A GREAT NEW AUTHOR!.......2005-08-15

South Station is a wonderful book. Barton paints a beautiful picture of the virtue and simplicity of the 1940's. We are introduced to the captivating Honey Lee Murphy. Then we are allowed in to her private world and see her unique perspective of family, the church, WWII, coming of age and falling in love. Barton also includes a huge twist that leads Honey Lee to make a decision that may jeopardize everything she's come to know and love.

Once you enter Honey Lee's world you can't put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars a delicate, insightful read.......2005-08-13

What I liked about this book was the insight into the heart of a faithful Catholic girl and her extended family and friends. Her thoughts and her prayers are delicately imagined. I'm not a Catholic so that view of the daily influence of religion and faith in a Massachusetts milltown after WWII was interesting. It was gripping to see the effect of large institutions of church, family, and war on average people in the mid-1940's. The effect of war on veterans and their families was especially poignant. It's a coming of age story of a courageous, beautiful girl. Read this book if you'd like to understand spirit apart from religious dogma and if you want an insight into small city life, postWWII.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific read!.......2005-08-09

Not only does Alice Barton capture with great accuray and insight a special time and place (Lowell, Mass., after WWII) but at the same time tells a story you can't put down. A beautifully written, fascinating tale.

So you want to write a multivolume, bestselling epic fantasy? Here's the book to help you. The Rivan Codex was published to answer the many letters David and Leigh Eddings have received from students, teachers, and aspiring writers. It's a companion to the 12-book fantasy series comprised of The Belgariad (five books), The Malloreon (five books), Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress. In David Eddings's words, The Rivan Codex "may give the student of our genre some insights into the creative process--something on the order of 'connect wire A to wire B. Warning! Do not connect wire A to wire C, because that will cause the whole thing to blow up in your face." This is a collection of the groundwork David and Leigh Eddings laid for the Belgariad and Malloreon series. On this firm foundation they imagined and built their world in book after book.

There's a fascinating introduction, a personal history of Belgarath the sorcerer, Holy Books, Gospels, Histories, King Anheg's diary, and an afterword. Footnotes tell how the authors used and changed these materials in writing the books. And of course, there are plenty of maps (the starting point for all epic fantasies). --Nona Vero

Book Description

Ancient Texts of The Belgariad and The Malloreon

When David Eddings sketched a strange map one morning before work, he took the first step in an extraordinary imaginative journey that would last for years and result in a majestic saga of Gods, Kings, and Sorcerers--one loved by millions of readers the world over. Now David and Leigh Eddings take us on a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the extensive background materials they compiled before beginning the masterpiece of epic fantasy unforgettably set down in The Belgariad and The Malloreon and their two companion volumes, Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress.

Our tour stretches from the wealthy Empire of Tolnedra to the remote Isle of the Winds, from the mysterious mountains of Ulgoland to the forbidding reaches of darkest Mallorea. We will visit the time before Time when two opposing Destinies began the cataclysmic struggle for supremacy that would involve Gods and men alike, crack a world asunder, and threaten to unravel the fabric of the universe itself. We will see the origin of the Orb of Aldur and glimpse the final act upon the Sardion Stone.

Along the way, we will stop to greet old friends: Belgarath, the Old Wolf, disciple of the god Aldur; Polgara, his enigmatic daughter; brave Belgarion, the Rivan King; and his beautiful Queen, Ce'Nedra. Old enemies will be waiting, too: the maimed god Torak, evil incarnate; Zandramas, fearsome Child of the Dark; and the tragically corrupted traitor, Belzedar.

Rare volumes will be opened to your eyes. Sacred holy books in which you may read the secrets of the Gods themselves and of their prophets. Scholarly histories of the rise and fall of empires from the Imperial Library at Tol Honeth. The profound mysteries of the Malloreon Gospels.

Brimming with the adventure, romance, and excitement readers have come to expect from David and Leigh Eddings--including invaluable advice for aspiring writers on how and how not to create their own fantasy worlds--The Rivan Codex will enrich your understanding of all that has gone before . . . and whet your appetite for all that is yet to come.

1 out of 5 stars Disgraceful pretension.......2006-06-14

I've read Eddings' fiction, including that stupid book with the talking cat, and do not see how he presumes to sneer down his nose at Tolkien, or to make such grand sweeping claims about his own work. The man's ego is out of control and far out of proportion to the standards of his work. His breed of fantasy is the equivalent of male romance novels, writing to the same formula over and over. It's clear he believes he writes 'literature', yet will break the process down to a bunch of admitted stereotype/cliches: you need a quest, a hero, a bad guy, and an object of power, and that's that.

Eddings' work has taken a dive, no doubt in lockstep with the rising belief of his own 'genius'. That's the problem of kissing an author's backside too much: he starts to think no work is required in his writing, nor any innovation. Certainly Eddings could not be accused of innovation in any case - his work is pretty much identical to an army of fantasy writers to follow Tolkien, only, arguably, his work is a deal worse.

Want an insight to the mind and processes of a hack? That's what you're buying.

5 out of 5 stars Understand what you are buying.......2005-03-27

I read through most of the reviews for this book, and I think that there is a very common theme among the negative reviews: they didn't know what they were buying. This book wasn't written to tell a story. It wasn't written as a prequel or followup on the books of the Belgariad or the Malloreon. This book was largely written before any of those books were written, because this book is the background of the stories in the Belgariad and Malloreon. I think that a lot of people bought this book with the impression that it was all-new material from the worlds that we already knew.

This is a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at a fantasy world that many of us have enjoyed over the years. As such, a lot of the information presented in this book is already present in the Malloreon and Belgariad. But the point of this book is that there is a great deal of development that goes on before you begin writing an epic fantasy like this. You literally have to create the world before you can create the book. Eddings spent a couple of years developing the characters and the backstory of his books, and this is that backstory. If you buy this book for what it is, you will probably enjoy it immensely. If you buy this book looking for a new story you *will* be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars An unfortunate case of Ego.......2004-01-13

As much as I enjoy the majority of David Eddings' story, a man who can only write one plotline with the same characters undergoing variation should not presume to tell anyone how to write a story. I am not disparaging the repeated retellings; I enjoy them (except Polgara) and I am buying the newest series in hardback. The fact of the matter is Eddings is not really an author; he's a storyteller. He's perfected one story and has become very good at retelling that one story in different ways. The fact that he presumes to laud himself and instruct others in their writing in his introduction has placed him squarely in the list of people whose product I love but would never wish to meet in person. The rest of the book is, frankly, boring. The piecemeal references to the various prophecies found in the book are more instructive, and mesh better with Eddings' own description of the personality of the Prophecy *anyway*. While not as self-indulgent as some such works can be, this book is not worth buying, unless you are trying to mine the world for fanfiction or a roleplaying game.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Final Book.......2003-04-21

This was the perfect cap to the book series. It let you see into the mind of the author, as well as how each Kingdom and character was developed. Other than the Mallorean Gospels (which bored me to tears), I couldn't put it down! Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this one last...........2002-12-15

I agree with some of the reviewer's in that this book should be read after reading the Belgarid/Mallorean. If you haven't been steeped in the world it relates to, the Codex will be a very slow and boring read. But if you are a Eddings fan, this book is a great addition to your library. I too, felt David Eddings frustrations come thru in some of his commentary, but unlike some I didn't take it personal. Give the guy a break. I highly reccommend this book to all the Eddings fans.

The Young Peacemaker Book and 12 Student Activity Booklets Set is a wonderful resource to use with all ages of children and adults. After just one class was presented to our mixed aged upper elem. group, the children quickly remembered many of the different approaches to dealing with conflict and even began to integrate some of the techniques taught. However you will need the skills taught in these books to deal peacefully and gracefully with Amazon and their fulfillment centers in order to procure a complete set of Student Activity books (#1- #12). You may need to contact Customer Service several times however the wait is worth it if you aren't in a hurry. If you need them quicker, consider purchasing them elsewhere.

This is my tenth year teaching and my third year using The Young Peacemaker materials. A month ago, the teachers in the grade after mine agreed that this material makes such a difference that they recommended that every student be required to study it.
I am also a trained Christian conciliator. From my experience, if we can get these principles into young people, they will be much more effective problem solvers and people winners as adults.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Teaching Kids How to Manage Conflict.......2002-02-15

This volume, written by Corlette Sande, the wife of Ken Sande, who authored the Peacemaker, is another resource from Peacemaker Ministries that applies biblical principles of peacemaking to the unique challenges of intermediate and middle school students. The Teacher/Student Manual is designed in a workbook format, and the appendices can be photocopied for child or student use. Student Activity Books are also available for each of the twelve lesson series. This is excellent material to be used in Christian schools, home schools, Bible classes, or better yet in the home as parents and children study and practice the principles together.

4 out of 5 stars THANK-YOU!, Our family is happily at PEACE!.......2000-06-14

Our family received this book recently from a dear friend. This book and Student Activity Booklets are amazing. They have clearly equipped our family and especially our four children with skills to prevent and resolve conflict in a constructive and biblically faithful manner. We are spending less time fussing and feuding and more time enjoying true family fun. Thumbs Up!

2 out of 5 stars This is an art history book........2001-11-01

I bought this book, hoping it would contain detailed information on particular technical aspects of individual chess pieces. The only measured diagram is on the cover. The rest of the book consists of bits of chess trivia and continuous anecdotal descriptions of chess pieces throughout history interspersed with photographs and paintings of different styles of pieces. While the illustrations are nice, I would have liked to see more details about the chess "architecture" and less fluff. All we have here are objects. No effort is made to describe in detail the size or proportions of the pieces or to compare or contrast sets and styles beyond the photographic presentations of them. The most we are told is what material they are made from.
The book is a nice brief pice of art history. If this is what you are looking for, then it is the book for you. Perhaps a second volume could be published to accompany this one that actually speaks at length about the "architecture" of the pieces. They would make a nice set.

        4 out of 5 stars Set Pieces.......2003-05-14

Strangely enough, the first word that comes into my head when thinking about SET PIECE is "pleasant". Now, "pleasant" may seem like an odd way to describe a book that opens with a 30-page extended torture sequence filled with disturbing imagery and psychological terrors, and which is punctuated by scenes of people vomiting. Yet, as mesmerizing, shocking and disconcerting as those passages were, it was mostly the carefree and relaxed feel of the story that I ended up taking with me.

The plot is robust and acceptable, but it mostly takes a backseat to the character study of the three protagonists. We see the Doctor coping, first with some extreme forms of torture, and then working his way through a science-fiction mystery threatening the whole fabric of space/time. Benny tries to adjust to life sans Doctor in 18th Century France, and makes a journey with an archeological expedition in an attempt to reunite herself with her TARDIS crewmates.

But the character most focused upon in SET PIECE is, of course, Ace. She is thrown backwards in time to Ancient Egypt, becoming, at various times, a warrior, a bodyguard and a waitress. In short, pretty much everything that Ace went through during her television and book adventures is brought to the forefront and explored. It makes for a leisurely pace, but Orman's writing skills mean that it is never boring or dull. Even the relatively low-stakes subplots have a real weight and importance attached to them. When the three are eventually reunited, the plot from the beginning is brought back to the forefront, but it almost feels like an afterthought. The save-the-fabric-of-the-universe storyline is acceptable; it just doesn't carry the same gravity that the middle sections of the book do.

The plot moves fairly slowly to the benefit of the in-depth look at the characters. The menace vaguely alluded to on the back cover remains mostly out of sight for much of the adventure, making but a few menacing cameos. There's no real sense of urgency about the alleged danger, yet this doesn't come across as a mistake since it's obvious that the focus of the story is not on the mechanics of the plot. The real story-mover comes in the form of Kadiatu Lethbridge-Stewart, an honest-to-God character rather than an ill-defined and vague alien menace. Her own inner conflict allows her to have some great scenes with the Doctor. The ambiguity surrounding her motivations and loyalties (brought about by a variety of reasons) feel authentic rather than gimmicky, and this allows her to be a genuinely unpredictable and dangerous character.

The first time I read SET PIECE, I thought it was okay. Rereading it a few weeks ago, I thought it was better than I remembered. Skipping through the pages, to refresh my memory before typing up this review, I found myself liking it even more. It's quite a thoughtful book, and my appreciation increases the more I think about certain elements and events. There are great little moments that are fun to read at the time, and there are loads of additional things that will have you taking a second, a third, and a fourth look back. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Buy this book!.......1996-12-11

This is a wonderfully poignant swan song for the character of "Ace", delightfully crafted by Kate Orman. Here we see the Doctor at his most devious at points, but also at his most delicate; his sadness at saying goodbye to Ace is heartwrenching, and only the knowledge that she will reappear on odd occasions stops the tears from welling up! Plus, Kate manages yet again to put the Doctor through extreme physical pain - her opinions regarding the seventh Doctor and chocolate sauce are well known to all regulars of rec.arts.drwho ! It is also testament to her abilities as an author that, even though this novel focuses on Ace and the Doctor, Benny is still exquisitely realised, and her character still plays an integral part in the novel.

The novel itself is wonderfully real, and the care and research for which Kate Orman is so very famous are obvious in every phrase. The rich texture of the prose never wavers and each character, however minor, is beautifully created and entirely "real".

To sum up, this is one of the finest novels in the Dr Who New Adventures series, written by one of the finest authors discovered by the series. This novel is worth ten times the cost of buying it, and should be top of your list when looking for your next read!

An outstanding collection of pieces for the beginning flutist including tasteful piano accompaniment arranged within the limitations of the developing instrumentalist range, tone, phrasing and technique. As a vast number of musical concepts are encountered in playing these pieces, this book is also recommended as an exceptional tool for the lesson setting.

                    Book Description

For babies to develop normally, they must be touched. Adults, too, thrive when touch is a normal part of their each day: a reassuring handshake, a sympathetic hug, a healing massage. But how often do we permit ourselves or others these simple forms of contact: physical touch, our emotional presence, spiritual communion? We need to get more in touch--closer to who we really are as a species, and in ways that support our highest human potential. Touching can be communication, friendship, kindness, service, or love for God. Topics include: * The highest human need * The roots of violence and abuse. * Acquisitions: a substitute for touch * Healing through touch. * A healthy model of sexuality. * Touch as a context for our lives. Foreword by Ashley Montagu.

5 out of 5 stars Intimacy as an essential component for a healthy childhood.......2002-12-09

Now in a substantially revised edition (the previous edition was titled "Untouched"), To Touch Is To Live by Mariana Caplan (California Institute of Integral Studies) affirms the importance of touch and intimacy as an essential component for a healthy childhood, as well as the phenomena of therapeutic touch, and the relationships of touching to human sexuality. A very special chapter clearly details "the wrong kind of touch" that is classified as sexual abuse, and offers assistance in coping with its negative fallout. A deeply insightful and understanding guide for an increasingly isolated and distant nation, To Touch Is To Live is strongly recommended reading for parents, child-care providers, teachers, counselors, as well as adult non-specialist general readers wanting to better understand this basic and fundamental aspect of human nature and sexual love.
