Book Description
The Los Angeles Times said of Ludmila Ulitskaya’s The Funeral Party, “In America we have friends, family, lovers, and parents–four kinds of love. Could it really be that in Russia they have more? Ludmila Ulitskaya makes it seem so.” In Sonechka: A Novella and Stories, Ulitskaya brings us tales of these other loves in her richly lyrical prose, populated with captivating and unusual characters.
In “Queen of Spades,” Anna, a successful ophthalmologic surgeon in her sixties; her daughter, Katya; and Katya’s teenage daughter and young son live in constant terror of Anna’s mother, a domineering, autocratic, aging former beauty queen. In “Angel,” a closeted middle-aged professor marries an uneducated charwoman for love of her young son, raising the child in his image. In “The Orlov-Sokolovs,” perfectly matched young lovers are pulled apart by the Soviet academic bureaucracy. And in the stunning novella “Sonechka,” the heroine, a bookworm turned muse turned mother, reveals a love and loyalty at once astounding in its generosity and grotesque in its pathos.
In these stories, love and life are lived under the radar of oppression, in want of material comfort, in obeisance to or matter-of-fact rejection of the pervasive restrictions of Soviet rule. If living well is the best revenge, then Ludmila Ulitskaya’s characters, in choosing to embrace the unique gifts that their lives bring them, are small heroes of the quotidian, their stories as funny and tender as they are brilliantly told.

Book Description
Two masters of epic fantasy have combined in this brilliant collaboration to create a rousing tale of the sort that becomes an instant favorite. This is the story of Shana, a halfbreed born of the forbidden union of an Elvenlord father and a human mother. Her exiled mother dead, she was rescued and raised by dragons, a proud, ancient race who existed unbeknownst to elven or humankind. From birth, Shana was the embodiment of the Prophecy that the all-powerful Elvenlords feared. Her destiny is the enthralling adventure of a lifetime.

This book got me interested in the Fantasy genre.......2006-08-05
I like this book, and loved it when I was younger, but as I have matured, so have my tastes. So... It's interesting, but not the best book. If you want to read a really good book of the same type of story (girl raised by dragons), check out "Daughter of Dragons" by Kathleen H. Nelson. I think it covers the human/dragon culture clash better. Would a girl raised by dragons really fit in that well into human culture?
Overrated Fantasy Novel.......2006-01-18
First, I'd like to say that I am a big fan of both Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey. That said, this isn't one of their better works. I picked this up for reading over vacation as I had seen the book in print for a number of years and thought I would give it a try. My problem with the book, is that the characters aren't very engaging. I've only read this first of 3 (4?) books, and I doubt I will continue simply because I found that I do not care about the well being of the heroes or the destruction of the villans. This is definitely a "light reading" novel.
Pleasant.......2006-01-03
This book kept me captivated for a time, but the mundane details wore me down. I like action and fast paced storylines like in The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt.
Never stop, heart pounding action is what I like. I did enjoy The Elvenbane, but I agree with that other guy in that elves, regular elves shouls always be the guardians of the earth, not the destroyers. Maybe they tried something new, but it left me a little unhappy.
From the author of Tales of Ancient Xenar.......2005-11-11
I started reading this book after finishing Terry Brooks Voyage of the Jerle Shannara: Antrax. I was a victim of Hurricane Wilma which put out my power for almost 2 weeks and reading was all I had.
I don't give this book a perfect 5 because there are a few problems. For one, Norton and Lackey made elves the bad guys in this. They made elves into despotic slave-driving being who conquered the human world after leasving their home world. They destroyed their home world by using their magic to mess up the environment in their world and they are doing the same in this. If I were either Norton or Lackey, I'd have made the bad guys dark elves. In most other stories, elves were good beings trhat coexisted with their environment and didn't try to interfere with the natural orders.
Another problem I found with this book was that it went against what I have been taught about writing fiction. Too much detail was put into the story. Much of the wordly details were completely irrelevant to the story.
But the story I liked. The main character Shana is a very likeable character. She was the halfblood child of an elven lord named Dyran and one of his human concubines. We watch her being born in the desert then get adopted by a dragon named Alara. Alara takes Shana back to her lair and gives her to her son Keman. Keman gave Shana her name and treated her like a pet then later like a sister. Shana grows up with the dragons until the age of twelve then is exhiled from the Lair. There is a lot more to the story which I can't get into. But this story flows well. I give this 4 stars
lightweight but entertaining........2005-04-12
This is the first in what will eventually be a quadrilogy of books, but be warned. There were around 12 years between books 2 and 3 being published so don't hold your breath for book 4.That aside, these are lightweight stories but still entertaining and worth reading.
Elvenbane is a tale of the struggle between 'half bloods' and Elves. The lordly elves rule the land with savage brutality. Humans are their slaves and viewed as little better than animals. Occasionally half bloods (a mixture of elf and human) are born. These are feared by the elves due to their strong magical powers, and are usually destroyed as soon as they are born.
Shana, the heroine of the tale, is one such half blood. Born in the desert to a mother who died giving birth, Shana is found and fostered by a dragon. No one knows dragons exist until Shana, following her fate as the 'Elvenbane' calls on them for help in the battle against Elves. The last such 'Wizard war' almost wiped out humanity; will it be different this time?
Enjoyable story for anyone wanting a quick read

loved it.......2006-01-26
I loved the previous books, I love this book more... well worth the money.. hate to see a good book go to waste.
Good moving story.......2004-05-20
I think someone else forgot to use the rating function. LOL
However this is a good book, I quite liked the wrap up to a intriguing story. Read it!
A Great Read!!.......2002-10-01
With two such gifted authors, this book couldn't help but be great. It lived up to all my expectations, with unforgettable characters and a well paced story. The dragons were intriguing, not being the usual "bad" kind. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to read something that they will long remember.
Just what to expect from one of the best..........2002-03-10
I have read all of Andre Norton's books, a couple months ago I thought this to be true and was rather saddened that I would never again be allowed to discover one of her spellbinding stories as found in "The Iron Cage", "The Beastmaster", or "Black Trillium". Naturally I was overjoyed when I found my thinking to be in error; as I was browsing through the library I happened upon "Elvenbane" and thus embarked on another adventure that certainly lived up to my expectations in every way. I have since also read "Elvenblood", the sequel to this amazing novel. Mercedes Lackey is also starting to make some waves on the sci-fi scene, and her styles compliment those of Andre Norton so well, yet add a flavor of diversity to the stories, just enough to let you know that without the collaboration of these two great minds this trip into the realms of the imagination would never have been possible. I hope you will enjoy these books as much as I have, and if you have not already read Andre Norton's books just know that you are really missing out!

If you like Spider-Man and Carnage, this'll work for you.......2004-07-10
The characters all function in the same fashion here as they do in the comics, right down to their powers/attitudes/etc. Except Spider-Man and Carnage. I've never been a huge fan of Carnage because, while he looks cool, he's basically another Venom (only "crazier"). But I can enjoy him for what he is... Anyway, there's a scene where Spider-Man is fighting Carnage high atop a bridge, and Carnage manages to get a surprise attack on Spidey by leaping from behind a strut or some such thing. Fine, you'd think Spidey would be dead. But nooo, his Spider-Sense kicks in and he avoids the lunge. Spider-Sense doesn't work on Carnage (or Venom) because the Venom costume/sybiote was once bonded to Peter Parker... Oh nevermind. Carnage also doesn't act as psychotic as he normall does, but I can forgivwe that. It's the "almost dead Spidey saved by his Spider-Sense that shouldn't have saved him" that raelly bugs me. What can I say? I'm a stickler for things like that. Overall; worth a read, but only if you like Spider-Man, Carnage, and a Green Goblin.
Another decent Spider-Man read...........2003-03-14
This is just another decent read (in my opinion, Spider-Man never really got a fair shake as the others with these novels). This book isn't bad, but it isn't great either. The story is pretty decent (I never go into spoilers), but you can tell it wasn't written by TRUE novel authors. It feels shallow and incomplete, much like it was written by a high scool student for a writing assignment. HOWEVER, it is somewhat entertaining, not to mention you could finish it in a day EASILY if you have the time. Carnage is a decent villian, evenif he is a carbon-copy of every stereotypical serial killer you see in the movies and on TV. ....
This Book was Incredibly Epic and Accurate About Spidey.......2002-12-08
This book seemed to go on forever, but that was okay. I am a great fan of spiderman, and I didn't have an idea of what to rate this. The only thing I had on my mind was a five star. I didn't know what Carnage was, but I knew the villain's name. It's all in the title. The more the villains are destructive, the better. And the more the heros are heros, the fun goes on and on. Novels are better for you than comics.
for spidey fans primarily.......2002-08-24
Okay first of all you should only really read this book if your a spiderman fan, but i suppose if you're lookin for something new and you don't know if you want to read this i would still reccomend it, but if you are not that interested, don't bother because even though i loved it, i love pretty much anything with spiderman so if you aren't a big fan i suppose you can pass it up. it gives an in depth descripton and out look on carnage one of my favorite two villians (the other being venom, both have the alien symbioent "costumes"). it's actually quite gruesome at least when carnage is the focus of the writing so if you don't much like violence in literature, i wouldn't ever read anything with carnage in it. i also reccomend Goblin's Revenge the novel that takes place right after this one, which is also a book by Dean Wesley Smith, possibly my favorite author, who does a lot of work on Marvel character novels. so if you are a big fan, get this book.
Spider-sense????.......2002-07-07
I thought the book was great, Carnage is one of the scariest super-villains Spidey's ever faced, and the whole plot of the book was great. The writing, however, suffered a bit, as I noticed a lot of repetition and other small things that took away from the story. At the end I was left feeling like there should have been more, like the story could have been better, but I was still satisfied; after all, it is a Spider-Man book!
One thing that really annoyed me while I read, however, is that Spidey was clearly able to use his spider-sense to dodge Carnage's attacks, etc. But, because the alien symbiote which turned Cletus Kasady into Carnage was once joined with Spider-Man, its presence doesn't set off the wall-crawler's spider-sense, allowing Carnage to sneak up on Spidey. He should not have been able to sense Carnage's attacks coming, and his spider-sense should have been useless around him. I thought that was a real glaring error made on the part of the authors that should not have been there. But, if you can put that aside, you will find that while this isn't the best Spider-Man book out there, it is still a pretty good read.

Wonderful Book!!!!.......2007-07-20
Bought one of these for my Father for Father's day(He is a Pastor) he loved it. I bought one for myself also and it is a good study book.
The New Unger's Bible Handbook.......2007-03-21
While I have not personally had the chance to examine the book myself, I gave this to my father, a retired minister, to review and he and my mom now wish to purchase a new one for themselves as well. He has been relying on his old, outdated Unger's handbook for many years now.
Every Shelf Needs this book!.......2006-02-24
The New Unger's Bible Handbook is a wonderful resource tool. It is user friendly but also gives the more experienced Bible scholar indepth information and stimulating insights.
I am more than pleased with my purchase and will probably add this to my gift giving list for Christmas.

Customer Reviews:
A not too bad reference tool...........2000-01-12
The UBH is fairly informative, and I found the info on the early church and canon formation very helpful. However the theological beliefs of the author creep in a lot. In Revelation, for instance, he only treats the futurist view of interpretation as worthwhile, while dismissing the other views without any real evidence against them. I have found this book was very useful when I was a younger Christian, but now it basically sits on the shelf. I think the NIV Study Bible's notes and package are the better way to go.
Interesting and very thorough.......1999-02-24
This is the best example of the type of reference work that I could locate. I purchased it at retail price because it was readily available at that time. It has proven somewhat valuable in my research of the scriptures by its coverage of the archaeology and culture of its time.
