Book Description

Bang! Being shot in the middle of the night and left for dead is what it took to open her eyes. Until that fateful moment, Regina Harris lived la vida loca with pimps and hustlers, a gangster lifestyle that supplied the money she needed to get high and forget the poverty of Harlem. Now she has turned her life around, is a college graduate and freelance journalist, and makes enough money to live on the Upper West Side and hob- nob with the city's movers and shakers. She's become the classy Satin Doll of the Duke Ellington song. But she can't forget where she came from: her three best friends are from the old neighborhood.

The Harlem homegirls. Regina tries to give emotional support to each of her friends as they deal with their own personal issues: Yvonne is a single mother looking for the right man. Tamika must raise two children alone while their father does time in jail for robbery. Puddin' lives her life by picking up men and smoking weed.

Living in two worlds; comfortable in neither. On a night out partying with her homegirls in Harlem, Regina meets aspiring lawyer Charles Whitfield, son of a pro-minent, upper-class black family in Philadelphia. He loves her but not her rough-around-the-edges friends. She loves him but doesn't think she can live up to his family's expectations.

Regina tries desperately to hide her former life, but when her past is revealed, it threatens to destroy her relationship with Charles and the life she has worked hard to create.

From its dramatic beginning to the fateful ending, Satin Doll is a witty and truthful take on relationships, friendships, and class distinctions.

This terrifying event begins the novel and marks the turning point in Regina's life. She returns to school and eventually becomes a freelance writer. Although her new life affords her opportunities to socialize with her middle-class peers, she still parties with her girls from the old 'hood. It's during one of these girls' nights out that Regina meets Charles Whitfield, a lawyer from a prominent black family in Philadelphia. As their romance blossoms, Regina's past rears its ugly head, threatening their love. From its dramatic beginning to the fateful ending, Satin Doll is a witty and truthful take on relationships, friendships, and class distinctions.

5 out of 5 stars I love the BOOK .......2007-01-04

This book was great from the beginning til the end.. Regina showed that woman could be thug but should always carry herself with class!

3 out of 5 stars VERY Disappointing Ending..........2006-05-26

I recently read "Satin Doll" and overall, I really did enjoy it.

Karen has a gift of giving each character a concrete personality, not only through her descriptions but through the characters dialogue (Especially Puddin & Tameka) Character development is her strength. She also is good with describing objects and places just enough to where you can easily visualize them in your head.

Okay, let's get to the real stuff...

Throughout the book, there are instances in which Regina "seeks revenge" on certain people. The first two instances of her "revenge seeking" tactics were understandable but the last thing that Regina does causes the ending to be a disappointment. A HUGE DISAPPONITMENT! I don't even understand why she does it. It doesn't make sense at all. I would have hoped that she would have learned her lesson in the end:[ That you don't always have to hurt people that hurt you. Sometimes you just have to walk away from the situation with your head held high.]

I also think that the book needed another dose of drama somewhere to give it a bit more spunk. There just wasn't enough "element of surprise" in it for me...which made it predictable at times.

OUESTION: why is the animated person on the book cover a dark-skinned sista (representing the main character) but yet, in the book, Regina, the main character, is described as a light skin sista! From the jump, I imagined Regina as a dark-skinned woman(because of the cover) when she really wasn't.

And why is the book title Satin Doll again? Besides the Duke Ellington song that Karen threw in there for whatever reason, I don't see how the title relates to the plot or even Regina.

But anyway, all in all it was a good read.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD STORY.......2005-10-03

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK I LOVED THE STORY AND I LIKED THE TWISTS AND TURNS. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK; IT WILL KEEP YOUR INTEREST. THE MAIN POINT OF THE STORY IS TO SHOW A HOODRAT TURN INTO A PROFESSIONAL.

3 out of 5 stars Paper doll.......2005-07-30

I would consider this Satin Doll more of a paper doll. The storyline was enjoyable but really unbelievable at times.

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2005-02-05

The book was so so...the beginning was interesting and so was the ending, had to force myself to read through the middle though. I believe that the use of a lot of the "big" words and proving a point to Charles was the author's lame attempt to prove to the readers that she knew a little something. I did like the realistic ending. This book is a book to buy on sale, or pick up from the local library...definitely a ONE time read.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not great fantasy.......2007-10-08

"Tigana" is an ambitious novel; it is a big hefty tome that is immediately appealing to lovers of the fantasy genre, it has a land which has been cursed in battle, never to be spoken of with its riches despoiled and its people killed or scattered, and it has brave heroes fighting forever an evil despot for its renewal and independence.

At least that's the premise, and an entertaining one at that. But somehow the premise just doesn't have that ring of truth and "reality" that makes a good fantasy novel a great one. There are really only two really interesting characters in the entire book - the evil despot Brandon, who has the potential to be really, really bad, but he is painted as simply too wise and even handed to carry off the evil that is supposed to emanate from him. This is a major flaw in the book - we readers really shouldn't like him. And then we have Dianora, a senior member of his "harem" who is Tiganan (but is pretending not to be), and who originally came to kill him but grew to love him. She is interesting yes, and painted as a strong woman who battles constantly with her conflicting feelings for Brandon, but in reality we know little about her, or Brandon for that matter.

And here I guess we come to the crux of my issue with this book. We know so little of the characters who strive for the return of Tigana, in fact we know almost nothing of them, good or bad. A great novel of any genre encourages us to identify with the characters, yearn with them as they yearn, grieve with them over their losses. Frankly I didn't care anything about them, and I knew so little of Tigana that I couldn't really identify with what they had lost.

This is an entertaining novel nonetheless, but only mildy so. The writing is fluid, but the story lurches along without much detail (which seems a rather funny thing to say about such a lengthy novel). You can enjoy it, but it will leave you wondering what it was all about, and who were these characters that you had just spent so much time with.

3 out of 5 stars Large-Scale Fantasy Novel Reaches, But Doesn't Quite Make It.......2007-09-21

I ordered _Tigana_ because it was highly recommended by a friend I respect, whose tastes I usually share. I can see why she recommended it: this tapestry-like novel is set in a world that is supposed to feel much like Reanissance Italy, and deals with the political struggles of the heirs of a defeated city-state to re-establish their kingdom. As in many fantasy novels, magic is a real force in the peninsula of the Palm, and one of the terrible effects of the tyrant's power is that people can no longer hear or speak the name of Tigana, the defeated kingdom. All this should make for an excellent read, but somehow it falls short. The author's attempts to deal with magic and create a world in which it is real are not quite convincing; there's no explanation of how magic power is acquired, how people learn to use it, and why some have it while others don't. The characters are colorful and interesting, but their development falls flat at times; this is particularly true of the women characters, whose motivations occasionally remain a mystery to the reader. And apparently none of the male characters have ever heard of foreplay, and none of the female characters seem to want any. These may seem like small criticisms, but overall _Tigana_ didn't convince me, and ultimately that's the test of any fantasy novel.

2 out of 5 stars Boring and overwraught.......2007-08-21

This guy can not tell a story to save his life. The first 20 pages are so convoluted, told from so many irrelevant perspectives, and handle the shoehorning in of the myth so awkwardly, it's almost unreadable. I struggled through, but didn't find any of the characters believable or even engaging. Especially Brandin, the so-called "evil" ruler who is actually a great, honorable guy and supposed to be sympathetic except for the little fact that he's exterminated an entire nation. None of it hung together. This is one of those books that whenever you see a "myth" you gotta say, "uh-oh, now who is going to find that enchanted rock/sword/ring in about 25 pages, hmmm?" Also found there to be something vaguely onanistic about an imaginary coutnry named "The Palm."

2 out of 5 stars Disengaged, and the adversity questionable.......2007-07-20

This is a book that many do, can and will greatly enjoy, but not me
The reason is the following two misgivings:

1. This book was like a beautiful, peaceful, pool of water. One can glide their fingers across the water and watch the pretty ripples and observe the nice scene. But one does not and cannot jump into this pool and immerse themselves in it.

Same with this book the reader always feel as an observer and never gets fully attached or sucked into its world. Never falling into the story, submerging and falling into the core of its plot and happenings.

The writing is lyrical and the author writes beautifully, but that's about it. There is just no special spark that ignites the reader with interest and emotion. My impression of it, anyway. This made the reading boring and slow.

2. Also the MAIN turmoil and unbearable, unthinkable, travesty/pain and conflict of the story was that an entire nation of a people were forced to forget the existence of their beautiful country/home. Simply, Tigana was no more, did not exist and all memory wiped out and it was forbidden to even mention it's prior existence, it was destroyed and it's people forced to renounce and forget it.

Well, that is sad and unfortunate, also nationality and one's origin is a very significant thing for a lot of people. However, while loosing one's home and country is bad, there are far, far worse fates that can be bestowed upon a person or group of people. And the adversity inflicted on those in the book, did not qualify in my eyes as something that unbearably awful, that the characters where just simply emotionally/spiritually dying of said pain and awfulness. Once again loosing ones home and even memory of it, is bad, but pales next to some of the harsher, evil destiny's that exist. It felt like the author was utterly pounding his personal opinion of the above into the writting, making it seem exagerrated and unwarranted . This killed it for me.

But to each his own, since I can see why others would truly like the book. The author can really depict emotion and is very original, so the verdict- borrow from library if unsure, something I regret not doing.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful, lyrical, and ridiculous.......2007-05-26

To begin, I should note that I loved Lions of Al'Rassan, am quite fond of Fionavar, and while I enjoyed a good amount of Sailing to Sarantium, felt dirty reading part of it, and detested Lord of Emperors - made me feel the need to bathe.

In other words, I am thrilled with GGK's ability to breathe life into characters and build an emotional reality for them. The gratuitous violence and sex disgust me. As does the repetition of phrases. As does the repetition of phrases. As does -

So basically, I was wildly disappointed with what I interpreted GGK's intended emotional tugging in Tigana. Here we go: There is NO WAY I could feel sorry for Brandin. I don't care if he knows about Fionavar (cute reference, though), and poor silly tragically beautiful Dianora is more torn than a credit card bill in a paper shredder.

So, let's see if I've got this straight: Daddy sends child to go to the neighboring kingdom and BEAT THEM INTO SUBMISSION. Child goes, and oops! the kingdom FIGHTS BACK. And oops! THEY WIN. So you hack the wrists off CHILDREN and many of the people in the kingdom, hideously torture the Prince (who was Just Defending His People) for 20 years and wipe out the whole populous because YOU (read: Brandin) are incapable of taking responsibility for sending your child to the battlefield to begin with...and because Dianora finds you endlessly sexy and clever and loveable we're supposed to feel bad for you?!? Because your men are loyal to you? Alberico may be twice as evil, no question, but that doesn't justify Brandin at all. Blech.

As for Devin of vaunted memory, whose memory means so much, to whom memory is so very important, am I repeating myself at all about Devin and his memory...who's vaunted memory fails figure out that Dianora is Dianora. Why play up his memory? In comes in useful when? A remarkable disappointment.

And the gratuitous sex, incest, and violence. I do not mind tasteful romance in the novels I read, but the overload just seemed to be there to titillate and nauseate the reader.

GGK writes fabulously well, conveys tortured emotions well, wrote a touchingly sweet final scene, and repeats himself incredibly well (how many times can Devin reflect on how burdened Alessan is? It's like counting the number of times "saddest tale of all the long tales told" appears in the Fionavar Triology...)

Ah well. He captures the essence of exile so very well, but it wasn't worth the slog to get through it.

In my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Involving sci-fi with incredible world building.......2006-08-22

This is book two in the Quintara Marathon, and you should read "The Demons at Rainbow Bridge" first, and then follow this novel with "The Ninety Trillion Fausts."

Having broken free of their ancient imprisonment, a pair of Quintara make the three empires stop and notice their ancient enemies have returned. The Mizlaplan (fanatics of the Cosmic All), the Mycholians (parasites who control other lifeforms), and the Exchange (ruthless capatalists) all send teams in an effort to stop the Quintara.

As the teams compete against and cooperate with each other on the journey to Chaos Keep, where the ancient seals that imprison the Quintara reside, they must survive the million ancient traps on the way.

This gripping science fiction novel keeps up a good pace and further develops the characters introduced in the first book. The danger and inner conflicts make it well worth reading. If you read book one, buy it... the story gets better!

We gave this book to a little girl in our church. Before we wrapped it, we started reading it and determined that adults love it too because we couldn't put it down. The colored pictures are fantastic and make you feel like you're right there with the characters. The stories are explained really well. We got our money's worth.

My 4yo son LOVES this!! He kept after us until we read it from cover to cover in about a week at bedtime! He lies in bed and looks at the pictures. Can't say enough about the illustrations - beautiful and well done. I initially found it at Walmart and picked it up. It is so simple looking on the front but on the inside it is beautiful!(hmmm) I did not realize it was going to be my BEST childrens Bible ever! I have not found one that I like better. You won't go wrong with this one! I am ordering more for my church Sunday school class to be given away.

I bought a box of these for a church mission that caters to people released from prison. Many of them have reading problems and one of my friends there found that this Bible was very effective at allowing these adults to feel comfortable about reading the Bible on their own. Kids love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for all ages.......2007-01-10

This Bible was a tremendous hit with our school's young people. They would carry it around and read whenever they could. Some parents came back to purchase another one for a sibling. The religion teacher highly recommended it and with good reason. It has no specific "agenda" except to put the biblical stories into easier bites for the readers and has attractive illustrations to accompany each story. Adults have said it has been of value to them also in their study and use with their families.

5 out of 5 stars Great kids Bible, the best I've seen!.......2006-10-07

I tried relentlessly to find my son a beginning readers Bible while I was putting together our homeschool materials for this year (2nd grade for him). They were all either corny or too dry. I just happened to stumble upon this Bible while shopping and decided to take a chance. My son reads a passage every school day, he really likes it. I appreciate that the illustrations are colorful and very realistic...no bulging eyes (like in "The Beginner's Bible"). The text is well written, it's not baby-ish at all. I have to help my son through a few difficult words here and there, but he reads 98% of it on his own. I am so pleased with this Bible and recommend it highly.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible For Youngsters, But One Glaring Omission.......2007-09-17

"My First Read And Learn Bible" is an excellent way to introduce children to the Word of God. It highlights key events in creation, the love of God, and of Jesus. The stories are wittled down to a child's level and never get too deep (or wide). The reading level is perfect for youngsters just heading into kindergarten, but parents can read these stories to children of any age. The illustrations are wonderful. They are full of vibrant colors and keep little eyes busy. Despite being a board book, the pages are very quiet. This is important if your child brings this Bible to church with them, since they'll probably be more interested in it than what is going on elsewhere in the church.

So why did I only give it three stars? For the simple fact that this Bible does not address the single most important event in Christianity: the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Sure, I can see where parents would perceive this event to be much too violent for little children, but I subscribe to the belief that there are some truths that children shouldn't be sheltered from. I have vivid memories of growing up and seeing pictures of Jesus being crucified. When I asked my mother what it meant, she merely explained to me that it was the greatest thing anybody has ever done for me or any other person. She didn't hide the facts when it came to Jesus' death and resurrection for us, and I don't think that I was scarred by seeing Jesus hanging on a cross.

So, if you want an excellent Bible reader for your child, I recommend this book. However, please don't shelter them from the single most important event that made Christianity possible.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful 1st bible.......2007-06-26

Received this as a gift to my son from his Godparents. Now we're giving it to our Godson. Nice pictures. Simple stories. Compact enough to fit in my diaper bag to take to church to keep our son entertained.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this book... not super cheesy. Simple text for child or early reader........2007-04-27

My daughter loves this book. She specifically requests it over and over at bedtime. And I actually like the artwork.. it's very simple and not over-the-top cheesy. The pastel quilt on the cover is a bit babyish for my taste, but the words on each page are printed on a solid color background, making it a easy for a future budding reader to easily read and decipher the words.

There are a lot of goofy bible kiddie books on the market that I really don't care for. But this one is simple and to the point. I like the simple language because she can easily memorize the words and I can fill in with my own details of the story when I want to. I also like that it's a board book because it's durable and the pages are easy for a toddler to turn.

The front and back cover are padded, which is a nice touch.

I also purchased the "My First Read and Learn Book of Prayers" (ISBN 0439906326) when I found it at my local TJMaxx. My First Read And Learn Book Of Prayers (Little Shepherd Book)

I'm back online today to purchase any companion books because we love it so much. I actually just found "My First Bible Hardcover" (ISBN 0439651263) and I'm going to purchase that, too. Read And Learn Bible

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Bible for young toddlers.......2007-01-01

My son is still too young for some of the other children's Bibles out there on the market, and a fellow mom recommended this board book Bible to me. My son loves the pictures and the Bible stories are modified to fit into a toddler's short attention span, giving the highlights of the original text and leaving out any violence too graphic for a small child. As he gets older his Bible studies will become more in-depth, but right now this is perfect for me to read to him or for him to "read" on his own and begins his training for deeper studies later on.

          3 out of 5 stars good.......2005-10-04

It is a good source with which to learn Greek, but the author makes up his own sentences to give examples of the material being learned...it might be better to find a source that uses examples straight from the Biblical text instead

4 out of 5 stars Very well done!.......2005-08-23

This book is wonderful. Much easier to learn from than some of the others. The only drawback is that the index could be much better -- for example, in the lexicon entry for a verb, it should include the page # on which the verb is introduced.

There are also some Greek words introduced in the text that are not included in the lexicon.

          5 out of 5 stars A Model of Clarity.......2005-03-17

David Alan Black has provided us with an introductory grammar that is a model of clarity.

This NT Greek grammar is reasonably concise and yet always provides sufficient information for the student to grasp the matter at hand. Compared to "The Basics of Biblical Greek", this grammar does a better job of introducing the student to the syntax (on an elementary level)of the New Testament with clearer explanations of grammatical terminology.

This is an excellent text for a professor to adopt, but it is also highly recommended as a supplement to those who are using Mounce's work. If the student is having difficulty grasping the grammatical point that Mounce is discussing, it is very likely that turning to Black's grammar will clear up the matter. Additionally, Black has an excellent selection of exercises with a complete answer key to the first seventeen chapters as an appendix to the book.

Additional illustrations are judiciously placed throughout the grammar. For example, on the crucial issue of mastering Participles, Black offers 34 sentences with translation in the body of the text.

This is a "must have" resource for first year Koine Greek students - and is well worth a second look by instructors who have chosen other texts.

          Book Description

Anyone interested in learning to read the Hebrew Bible in its original language will find within the pages of this book all the resources needed to begin this wonderful journey. The book is laid out in four parts. The first part teaches the Hebrew alphabet through a series of lessons. The second part teaches word and sentence structure of the Hebrew language by breaking down each Hebrew word in Genesis chapter one, verses one through five. The Hebrew text of Genesis chapter one is provided for reading and comprehension practices in part three. The fourth part of the book contains charts and dictionaries of prefixes, suffixes, words and roots of the Hebrew language to assist the reader with vocabulary definitions and comprehension. Within a short amount of time the Hebrew student will soon be reading the Bible through the eyes of the author rather than the opinions of a translator.

3 out of 5 stars Strong book for familiarizing yourself with the Hebrew Alphabet.......2006-10-28

This book is extremely helpful in getting to know the Hebrew alphabet and pronunciation. The phonetic exercises are very good, and I find myself being reminded of Hebrew words just from hearing similar sounds.

The downside is that this book is in no way extensive. Unless you would really enjoy reading the dictionary in the back, there are only about 4-7 examples to help build vocabulary in each chapter, along with the entire chapter of Genesis 1:1.

Learning Hebrew is for the patient. I was hoping for vocabulary building exercises similar to those when I learned the Romance Languages: I am running. I ran. You are running. I sent a letter, etc. I would rather have those simple sentences and THEN approach Genesis, rather than building my vocabulary straight from its verses. One can't be expected to learn Italian by diving straight into Dante, but that's analogous to what this book does.

5 out of 5 stars Simply, the easiest........2006-07-18

I thought learning Hebrew was going to be difficult, not only for me but my children I was trying to teach.(ages 4-10) I was wrong this book made it sooooo simple and fast. Easy to understand. No, research needed or alot of searching for what you need in this book. Very well laid out. When you are done with one day you simply turn the page, you have review of the previous page and the new letters and sounds. You do not need another book to learn the letters and sounds and vowel points.
          Highly recommended.

A basic book with much repetitive information from Jeff Benner's other books. I have enjoyed them, but feel the books involving "word origins", etc, have a lot of duplicate information.

For thousands of years, from the time of Moses, the Israelites were commanded to love God, keep His Word, and to teach their children. For thousands of years Israelites have tenderly taught their children from birth. This is one of Gods great blessings to mankind. Realistically, only parents can teach their children from birth by this extraordinary way. During the early formative years is the time when God pours forth his blessings for spiritual blessings, academic abilities, amazing skills, and other talents. This simple and easy practice can take only a minute a day. Yet, it helps explain academic abilities of some of the top scholars in our universities. It helps explain the special genius of Albert Einstein, considered by some to be one of the greatest geniuses of all time. Somehow the church has lost sight of this great blessing from God. Timothy, who is an example of a believer taught from birth, was an early church leader. He also had special spiritual blessings to help establish the early church. It is time for parents, pastors, teachers, missionaries, and counselors, to understand once again, how God abundantly pours forth His very special blessings when parents follow this simple and easy command for parents to teach their children and grandchildren, especially from birth.
