Book Description
Award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction Jewell Parker Rhodes is a master of her craft, under-standing how both real and imagined stories can serve as a pathway to enlightenment. Porch Stories is Rhodes's tribute to her beloved grandmother, a real account of the love she received and the lessons she learned.
Jewell Parker Rhodes was left in the care of her father and his mother when her own mother abandoned the family. Grandmother Ernestine's house in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was home to four other grandchildren as well. And while its crumbling bricks, lack of air-conditioning, and neighborhood rodents meant that life was anything but easy, the family house was filled with love. Everyone on their street knew and loved Grandmother Ernestine; men would tip their hats and children would rush up for a hug any time she was outside.
No one loved Grandmother Ernestine more than Jewell, who would pass up a movie with her cousins to sit outside on Ernestine's front stoop and listen to her stories and her words of comfort. Jewell would later move out West to live with her mother and father as they reattempted marriage. But that was a short-lived experience. Before long, she was back in the loving arms of her grandmother, whose wisdom and warmth gave all of her children the tools to overcome the ordinary and extraordinary challenges life brings. Porch Stories, described by Rhodes as "an intergenerational love song," is a loving tribute that is at once candid, courageous, and reverent -- a literary portrait of family love that readers from all walks of life can see in themselves.

This Book is Meant To Be Savored .......2007-06-25
Jewell Parker Rhodes has delivered another winner with Porch Stories. She has penned a wonderful story about her relationship with her grandmother. Deserted by her mother before she could crawl always left her feeling insecure, but not unloved because her wonderful grandmother filled her empty spaces with a love that was rich and pure. The two of them spent time bonding while sitting on the front stoop of their house. It was then that her grandmother , Ernestine, used to tell her stories of the past. Not only were these stories of the past, but they also taught Ms. Rhodes a strong moral code, and values that she could use throughout her life. Whenever Jewell's behavior was not up to code Grandmother Ernestine had a story to tell that made her understand why her particular action was not wise." "Remember your name, who you be in love with your good self" was the number one message that Ernestine wanted to make sure Jewell understood
.
For a short time Jewell had to go live with her mother who did not share the same views in life that were instilled in her daughter .
This made the period of time during Jewell's parents attempt at reconciliation very hard for her. Living with her mother made her realize just how complex the world really is. It was her grandmother' s efforts that made her into the writer that she is today. Ernestine was determined that Jewell get the education that she herself had always longed for but was not able to get.
I truly enjoyed reading this book just as I have enjoyed each book by this author, it left me feeling good. Maybe you have a grandmother or a great- aunt in your life that has told you stories that helped you down life's path . If you did you will enjoy this book as it brings back memories of a time when the world was a lot less complicated. In fact I think that anyone who likes a book that lifts your spirits will enjoy reading this book. Just as usual Ms. Rhodes has delivered a winner.

As one of Jewell's cousins reading this book was like taking a train ride back in time. I could see my Grandmother's face, hear her voice, smell her food and see her loving eyes. I thank my Cousin for reminding me and sharing with others how her loving Spirit lives on in those who know her words. My Daughter never knew my Gram, but can now know her Spirit through the words of this wonderful book.
Just Wonderful.......2007-01-26
The title of the book explains it all. It is about Jewell and her Grandmother just bonding as Grandmother's and grandchildren do. It's just little snippets of her life with grandma on the porch and the all the wisdom behind her grandmother's words.
Very touching novel...
It made me miss my grandmother even more...
Great Job Jewell

Book Description

Disfunctionality has no age.......2002-11-30
The book starts with the story of Catherine, who has just discovered that her husband is unfaithful. She leaves their NY home and drives all the way to her family's estate in Tennessee. When she arrives, her grandmother and aunts do not dare ask what has happened, even though everybody wonders where is her husband. What an excellent piece of commentary about Anglo culture: any hot-blooded, Mediterranean type would have pummeled her with questions in seconds. What an excellent opening act! The readers will soon realize that the reason nobody asks questions is so that they do not have to answer any in exchange. From Grandma to Aunt Willy to Cousin Daphne to Cousin Elsie, the entire array of women, whether they are sitting on the porch or not, have searched for love in all the wrong places. The men have not fared any better, and are even more unable to do so that the women themselves.
Almost in a vignette format, we learn about the sad interior lives of all characters. There is an overall feeling of despair that permeates each and every person in the book. There are no happy stories, and what is worse, no sense of hope either.
Caroline Gordon wrote this novel in 1944, which accounts for the fact that the language and tone are quite dated. This was a turbulent time in the US, not just because of the war, but also because of the societal changes that were brewing. Some of the topics addressed by this book are black-white relations, sex outside of marriage, divorce and homosexuality. I imagine that this book caused quite a turmoil, when it was first published.
A very confusing book.......2001-01-04
I had high hopes for this book from the description and editorial reviews and it was disappointing on all counts. I found none of the characters to be sympathic, in fact they were rather self-centered and annoying. While I don't mind a tragic tale, noone in this book was allowed to be happy or fulfilled, not even the horse.

I laughed until I was INSPIRED!!.......2001-07-12
My non-christian friend bought me this book for 2 reasons: 1) I'd just moved to the country ro simplify my life, and 2) I'd recently renewed my dedication to Christ. Little did I (or she) know how wonderfully inspiring it is! I hope there are no men reading this review, but, let's just say I read Chapter 6 - "Cocooning In A Cabin" during an extremely stressful time of the month. AND, I had no idea what was going on since I had miscalculated, as Becky had! Needless to say, I immediately took some steps to slow down and REALLY simplify my life. What a God send! THANK YOU BECKY!!!
Impacting.......2000-07-06
My husband purchased this book for me knowing I indulge in the "simple life". Becky's graciousness reminded me that certain things are not worth getting bent out of shape about. Our life is unique and we need to enjoy the quirky way things happen sometime.
What a refreshing change!.......1999-08-24
This book is such a nice change from the "get organized books" This is a feel good book about enjoying the important things in life and Becky Freeman just delivers it with such a great sense of humor and a great outlook. If you find that life becomes too hectice, just read this book - it's helped me decide that my family life is so much more important than job status. I'm now enjoying "The Best of Becky Freeman." She makes you want to be just like her (happily and haphazardly married with kids).
A terrific heartwarming and LAUGH OUT LOUD read.......1998-07-19
A View from the Porch Swing is a must read for anyone- especially those who need a lighthearted view of everyday life. She's honest, funny, and loves the Lord
A wonderful woman's point of view on life........1998-07-10
The Garden series gave me a great insight into the parallel of my life and the Bible.

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - The big city vs. the small town.......2005-12-31
Our lives can change so much from the time we leave high school until we become functioning adults in this forever-changing world. As many go off to the big city in search of bright lights, success and romance, the realization often hits that they really didn't need to leave home for all of that. In FROM MY FRONT PORCH, Rayanne Wilson takes a look back over her life from her front porch trying to figure out what happened to have her seeing a therapist monthly and what possessed her to move back to her hometown.
After graduating from college, Rayanne leaves Sumter, South Carolina with a dream that involves fame and fortune in the Big Apple. Upon arriving in New York, she moves in with friends, Ivory and Dorian. Together these three become the best of friends as they each pursue their various interests and become successful. That fame does not come without a price. Ivory spends many years developing a modeling career and being involved in some unhealthy relationships before she finally settles down. As Dorian chases the modeling profession also, she becomes involved with a married man who has intentions of leaving his wife, but never does, so Dorian turns to drugs instead. Rayanne becomes the successful playwright in New York and eventually finds the love of her life in Ralph Underwood, but she begins to long for the simple home life she left in South Carolina. With her priorities changing and family needs calling, Rayanne and Ralph try a long distance relationship that will test her friendships and show that all she ever needed was right there in Sumter.
Minnie Dix has written a very moving and captivating novel on big city adventure and romance for a small town girl. The characters were well developed. I came away feeling like I knew each one personally, although I may not have liked some of them. They seemed to be people you would meet anywhere. Their antics were not so over the top as to be unbelievable, but rather made the readers feel as though it could actually happen to them. In fact, I could've sworn that I was reading part of my life in Rayanne's story. For such a huge book (BAB), the writing was near flawless. I had this book on my to be read (TBR) list for so long that now I could kick myself for not reading it sooner.

Raspberry Creek is a very humorous book with wonderful stories of people living in small town America near a big city. The characters are like people we all know. I have tried the few recipes that are in the book and they are all wonderful. The writer captures moments of love, adventure, laughter and drama. It is light and easy reading that kept me and all my friends staying up half the night just to finish the book. I hate that it ended.

An Ugly Start.......2006-02-27
I'll start with the way this manga began, which is really the only reason why I took two stars from what I had guaranteed myself would be a five. In the previous volume, what I thought was an implied molest ended the graphic novel, but this volume picks up from that final scene and continues it all the way up to penetration. Though not graphically drawn, the motions and the imagery make it quite clear what is happening to the young Guts. This was an ugly scene that actually caused me to put this manga down for a while. Not only that, but it was unneeded. After finishing volume three, I had already known what had or was going to happen to Guts, as I'm sure most of the readers of this manga knew as well. And while the book has a sticker on the cover stating that there is graphic content within these pages, I think this was taking it too far. Violence and nudity is tolerable, but this wasn't. Kentaro Miura, or even the American publishers, could have cut this scene by two or three pages and it still would have made plenty of sense. It left me with a bad taste and I nearly gave this book a one because of it.
Luckily, though, it still is Berserk, and after that distasteful beginning, the story goes on into Guts's past. His history with Gambino is concluded in this volume, and his place with Griffith and the Band of the Hawk begins. For anyone who saw the anime first, this will be instantly familiar to you. Guts's beginnings with the Band of Hawk is not good. It begins as a series of confrontations and death, until Guts finally faces off with Griffith. It's this battle that determines Guts's future with the Band. After that, Guts begins his first official assignment, and determines that he'll succeed no matter what the costs. Despite the darker tones of the previous volumes, this volume is a little darker without the presence of the comic relief Puck.
Now, though I may be repeating myself, I will only recommend this book to fans of the Berserk series. If you're aren't really interested, then stay away from this book. And if you weren't impressed by the first couple volumes, then stop now so as not to find yourself extremely disappointed with a very graphic beginning. But, if you're aren't as sensitive as me, I'd still only recommend this book for readers eighteen years of age or older. There is nothing in Berserk that should appeal to kids in any way, and parents should avoid purchasing this for their children.

A rather heart-rending story about a boy from another time........2004-08-10
Two of our most famous sci-fi authors, Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg got together to produce a great "what if" story exploring how technology of a make-believe 21st-century lab could go far enough to bring right back a child from 40,000 years ago to live with a caregiver in a bubble.
Miss Fellowes, who had been hired under very strict regulations to watch the prehistoric boy, had a kind of a sharp tongue and sometimes acted like a demented soccer mom, especially when nosey scientists and the media eagerly flocked over to gawk at the kid and make a big fuss over him. But she had fallen into love with the strange-looking Neandertal child and thus would never want to part with him.
The little boy named "Timmie" had turned out to be such a charming little angel in spite of his "unsightly" prehistoric appearance. And he had also ended up facing a very uncertain fate, especially with a scientist who brought him over, yet didn't intend to keep him forever, an overzealous child advocate who screamed bloody "child abuse", and a worried nurse who feared that he wouldn't survive in a prehistoric environment after a few years of learning to read and eat with a fork.
In addition to Timmie's heartwarming adventure in the modern times, we also get glimpses of the prehistoric tribe that he had left behind, which was now facing its own dangers forty thousand years back.
What a Sci Fi literary Duo!.......2003-01-02
"A remarkably moving and chilling tale of what happens when past and present collide..." A charming and nostalgic trip into the past when SciFi really had a plot...
A tearjerker any time..........2001-07-31
Asimov in his introduction to the short story, put it as a "tear-jerker" and his second favoutite story. It is my all-time favourite though - a wonderful read. The novel is good - there is some expansion on the Neanderthal times from where the boy is brought as a specimen to today's world. But what is truly relevant here is the way the maternal feelings grow in Nurse ???(whats her name) and how mutual love develops between the two. The finale is brilliant. I would recomment all to read this one. There is nothing special in the "Silververg" part as I see it. The short story of Asimov is what carries the thing through - and so, you may as well read the short story. Its his finest tale.
great story.......2000-06-10
Wow, Asimov and Silverberg really know how to tell a story. This is the best sf novel I've read in a long time.
Very successful collaboration.......1998-11-19
I've read all three of the Asimov/Silverberg collaborations, and in my opinion, this is the most successful. It doesn't feel like a stretched short story (as Positronic Man) or the unnecessary completion of a nearly perfect one (as in Nightfall)...it succeeds by just telling the other half of the story I'd always wondered about. This has always been one of my two favorite Asimov short stories (Bicentennial Man being the other), so I'm pleased to say that I enjoyed reading this novelized version as much as the original. A beautiful, extremely touching tale.

A Treasure for Female Taoist Alchemists.......2004-10-30
Immortal Sisters presents life stories and teachings of distinguished female Taoist adepts who lived from the third up to the twelfth century.
Through poems, stories, teachings and commentaries, Immortal Sisters sheds light on the spiritual methods taught and practiced by these women.
The book is about Taoist Alchemy and it uses the symbolism from the Taoist Alchemy. As such, it would appeal the most to female practitioners of Taoist Alchemy.
The poems themselves contain instructions for practice, but even with the commentaries included, but again, they will make most sense only to the practitioner of Taoist Alchemy.
Rarer than one bird singing, more beautiful than its song.......2002-12-11
The poetry of Sappho has been read as THE example of women from ancient times, but this text shows us that the rarest of the jewels come from the Eastern civilization. These works are like a Chinese brush painter's stroke; from the heart of the spirit to the characters on the page. Each stroke reads as if it is found in a great brushpainter's' tradition of "having the bamboo completed in your chest" -- or seeing with one's inner eye and then simply writing what one sees.
What an exceptional find for students of daoism who are interested in learning the true beauty and wonderful myth of the Taoist Immortals and their jouneys! The Immortals include women but seldom do we get the chance to learn of them -- or in this case -- read their actual "bamboos of the chest."
Yes, Cleary follows his tradition of translating rare and visionary material, but since I have yet to master the language, I cannot say how true his translations are to the original words. This poetry is as simple as a final brushstroke in the holy spot on a sheet of rice paper. But these interpretations are filtered by what men perceive in these women's writing, and how their lives shape this text.
I wait to hear the translations from wonderful contemporary daoist women like we find in the mastery of Eva Wong. Clearly, the author notes that few works were written for both women and men. These ancient women were clear that much of the poetry was written for women only.
Do not hesitate to purchase a copy of this amazing gift to the world of beauty. Each page is fresh with new readings and is a staple of my bedside library. The works shape meaning into paths I follow and into the nature I seek as I live in solitude on the side of a mountain.
In the busy city, in a quick moment on that bus in rush hour, or during a break in your day of dealing with "reality" -- this amazing little text will spill over to give you the visions of the immortals and the sanctity of the women who penned each verse.
Nothing can be better for your quest of "having the bamboo completed in your chest."
enlightenting information for women involved in meditation.......1999-09-24
Very practical information regarding women and the practice of Taoism. The commentaries are extreamly valuable in uncovering the underlying messages within the text.
An ancient guide for woman taoist alchemy.......1999-03-25
Cleary again has done an incredible job of translating from the writing of a modern taoist master Cheng Yinling who was the head of the China Taoist Association. Master Cheng's wrote the comentary based on the ancinet text of several woman taoist masters who gave very detail instruction in the image rich langauge of taoist oral tradition. Cleary is able to tease out some of the more unique terminology like the spirit water as salivia. Having read the original Chinese text, I have to say that Cleary did a great translation job once again.
