Customer Reviews:
The cover is deceptive.......2007-09-24
This book is really disappointing because none of the images are in color. I'm not sure how a publisher can create a Black & White book on art that is based on color -- Polish Folk Design is completely based on color. All art books sold on Amazon should clearly mark if the book is Color or B/W.
very good idea for a book - but some errors found.......2007-04-04
I was also a bit disapponted by this book. It has a beautiful front cover and also quite interesting, although a bit short introduction by Frances Drwal. The introduction talks about the history of Polish paper cuts (wycinanki) and the regional differences. It also explains the most popular types of paper-cuts.
The patterns inside are interesting although black and white. But the real problem is to find a right design according to the list. The list groups the patterns according to the design type. The pages of the book do not have numbers although the list has the numbers. Moreover, the design numbers according to the list do not match the presented design in any way we will try to count the designs. Some designs are missing from the list, some are listed twice as two different pattern designs - the majority are just misplaced - and it is all quite chaotic since as I mentioned earlier - there is no any numbering at all!
I still think the book is worth to buy but I wish the author and the publisher would number the pages or the design and improve the listing.
slightly disappointing.......2006-05-22
front cover is in full colour and gives the impression that the wycinanki will be from a variety of regions. Sadly they are all Kurpiowskie (single coloured) and not the multi-coloured layered Lowickie wycinanki as seen on the front cover. Still, a reasonably good buy.
I Love This Book!.......2005-09-02
This was the first book I bought on paper cutting and I'm so happy I did. The patterns and designs are outstanding!
If you only own one paper cutting book, please let it be this one! First I traced the patterns, then I cut out 9 different patterns from this book. I'm now enjoying them on my backdoor window. Put your cut-outs in plastic page protecters and tape them up. I used plain, old construction paper for mine and they are beautiful!
Timeless Polish Folk Art.......2001-10-26
It was this wonderful book by Frances Drwal that truly brought this art form to life for me. These papercuts, some white on black and some black on white, are wonderfully done.
I happened across this litle gem just before publishing my novel PUSH NOT THE RIVER and immediately decided I had to use a few in the book. Ms. Drwal was more than willing for me to choose a number of her little masterpieces, thus greatly enhancing a story based on the actual diary of a Polish countess in the 1790s.
For this tiny investment, you'll reap a treasure of art in these painstakingly and perfectly done wycinanki designs!

pretty good, descriptions of drawings confusing.......2005-10-03
While the text and drawings are separately very detailed and fairly descriptive, there is very little correlation between the text and drawings. At times it is unclear as to what kind of dress the author is talking about, making it useful that the picture of the dress should be right next to the text. The short descriptions of the costumes included with the drawings are also difficult to read due to the text they're written in. I also found that the sections for clothes from about 1930-2000 did not really cover the full scope of styles and fashions worn in that period of time.
However, despite these small difficulties, this is a great book, with abundant information and fairly detailed drawings. I've only had the book a week, and it has already been immensely helpful to me. :)
Fashion in Costume 1200-2000.......2003-09-19
Throughout history, clothes have been worn not only for warmth but also, with constant variety and innovation, to convey status, wealth, occupation, personality and social and more values. Joan Nunn's detailed survey of costume in the western world over the past eight centuries not only gives the reader a vivid visual impression of the clothes themselves, but also out lines the historical and social background and the changes in manufacturing techniques the way costume has developed and the manner in which it has been worn. Each of the nine chapters covers a certain period, with an introductory section followed by descriptions of the underwear, outer garments, hats, footwear, hairstyles, accessories, jewelry, fabrics and colours worn by men, women and children. There are over 800 line drawings, specially made by the author from contemporary sources (carvings, paintings, portraits, fashion plates and photographs). This is an invaluable, copiously illustrated reference book for students of costume, social history and the visual arts and for those concerned with designing costumes for the theatre. It is also a fascinating book for general reader interested in fashion and the art of dress.
A valuable and much needed updating of a classic reference........2000-05-09
Fashion in Costume 1200-2000 is an old classic catalog of western costume updated to 2000 in this paperback second edition. This detailed fashion survey contains a wealth of information valuable to costume researchers and designers and illustrators, and theatre workers and fashion historians. Over 800 line drawings illustrate the nine chapters which each cover a historical period. Incredible detailed information about underwear, accessories, jewelry, shoes, and hairstyles is included. An example of the 1980's-90's fashion era is a series of sketches of Diana, Princess of Wales in several outfits (p. 249). As in the previous edition, all is meticulously researched and presented. This reviewer has made good use of the previous edition in a second career as community theatre costume designer. I look forward to using this valuable and much needed updating of a classic costume reference.

Everything in one book!.......2000-05-03
This book covers the largest time period in fashion history available today. Although the author limited herself to one book, the amount of information that is packed into this book is absolutely wonderful for anyone interested in costuming. Not only is politcal history covered, trival facts and those who influenced fashion are described in concise detail. Most helpful are the sketches on nearly every other page, which show details of full outfits and variations of certain garments. Diagrams of how to tie men's ties and special period collars are extremely useful. Men, women, children, underwear, shoes, accessories - this book covers it all.

Customer Reviews:
Frustrating.......2005-03-21
Unfortunately the abundance of use-free filler left me with a sour taste and doubt about the author's credibility. An example would be the page and a half spent on the importance of having a lot of pencils and paper. Writers don't generally need to be told this.
By and large I found the inset comments from other comics writers more helpful than the author's content, (though some of it is lifted directly from other books.)
I would not recommend this book.
Doesn't really help much.......2003-07-28
It's well put together, but if you are in fact trying to break into the business, she basically says that you have to know someone, be it an editor or an artist, and that's notparticularly helpful, IMHO.
It does what it says.......2003-04-18
Books about the technique of writing (plot, character, etc.) are very easy to find. This is not one of those kinds of books. This book is about the BUSINESS OF COMIC BOOKS.
As the author says, "This book is not designed to instruct you on how to develop your writing talents. Instead, I offer business advice and suggestions for honing those skills. I propose ways for you to find out where your abilities stand in relation to industry requirements...."
The author does an excellent job of telling you what to do AFTER you're fairly confident in your writing abilities. How should you format your proposals and scripts? Who should you approach at comic conventions, and how can you impress them? Should you send out unsolicited manuscripts? If you have writing skills, and the desire to write for comics, but don't know how to go about doing it for a living, then this is the book for you!
By the way, if you want a book on developing your writing talents, you'll get a lot more out of "The DC Guide to Writing Comics" by Denny O'Neil.
A very good place to start!.......2001-09-20
This is an easy read and gives information only a true insider would know.
If you are looking for a job..........1999-03-24
If you want to look for a job it may be useful for you because some advise may be applied to some different cases. If you want to know what you may face when trying to look for a job in the comic business, then this is for you. If you want to know some basics about how to present your samples and some basics about script structure, this may be for you.
If you are out of USA and you want to get into comic business that may not be for you. If you are looking for a manual that tells you extensively all the secrets, hints and tips to write a good plot and a good script, then look somewhere else. It has some of that but it is not very long.
Basically this book is just some advise combined with some text boxes with Q&A interviews to some writers who work in that industry. It is not easy to get into this business considering that you have not the visual advantage of the artist and your work requires some concentration to evaluate if your job is good enough or not.
The author insists too much in some ideas like "do not hang around" when meeting or trying to contact editors.
If you are a newcomer writer without experience, I suggest 1)Work on your self-esteem first 2)Read this book and do not feel overwhelmed by this book 3)Do whatever you judge as what must be done. This is for you.
If you are not a newcomer writer without experience, I suggest you look for something else.

Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2002-10-14
This book will keep you entertained for the whole bathroom-break with very interesting articles, and tiny factoids at the bottom of each page. This is the kind of book that man loves, because it is almost like TV. It keeps your attention with interesting facts and things like that that will make you surprised. Buy this today and you will be entirely satisfied.
Uncle John's Best Book.......2002-05-30
The person who gave the scathing review in February is mistaken. I have all of the Bathroom Readers and there are hardly any repeats in the ones that say "All-new" on the cover. (Every once in a while, they goof, but they've probably done over 10.000 pages so far, so i can forgive a few flubs.) Absolutely Absorbing is the best all-new edition so far as far as I'm concerned. It's both funny and thought-provoking, and has some of their best articles ever (Movie Star for a Day, Coined by Shakespeare, The Margarine Wars, and hundreds more). Any Bathroom Reader is great, but it seems like they were really on their game when they made this one!
Entertaining "absorbing" Reading Material for the Throne Roo.......2002-03-14
This is a great book to keep in the latrine. I have found myself spending more time on the throne than needed because I get so absorbed in this book. It offers amusing or serious short to long stories and facts to suite the occasion. Definite recommend.
Recycling their material.......2002-02-12
While this series of books is fun at times, the
fact that the editors are recycling more and more
material from their earlier books is starting to get
annoying. Come on guys, it's cheating to quote from
your own books! Make the books smaller if you have
to, but keep it truly all new.
Whip Out That Credit Card and Buy This Book!.......2000-11-10
I can't imagine anybody not liking this book. It's candy for the mind. While they suggest that you put a copy in your bathroom for reading upon the throne, I'm pretty sure that anybody who starts reading it while taking care of business will keep reading it afterwards (after washing their hands, of course).
I'll admit that some of the information in the Bathroom Reader series is inaccurate. For example, in the "Legendary Lost Bathroom Reader" book, they said that the most commonly used letters in the English language were, in order, ETAOINSKRDLU. The "K" should have been an "H". However, there's so much material in these books, covering such a wide variety of topics, that it would be impossible for them to get everything right. To me, the main value of this book is to expose me to new topics that I didn't even know could be interesting.
I think that the highest compliment you can pay to a book is that when you flip over the last page, you wish you could have that experience all over again. Since there are several BR books, you can certainly do that!
One thing deserves mention: the creators of these books do not skimp. They cram every page full of reading matter. They seemed determined to replace "whitespace" with information.
What can I say? Buy this book!
Customer Reviews:
Who would buy this book used?????.......2004-08-16
Really - who would buy this book used??? It's not worth the $1.59 price tag. Buying rubber gloves in order to read this book would double the price!
ridiculuously small book.......2004-04-23
Alright...it's my fault, I did not notice the size of the book before ordering. This is a book about 1/2 the size of a pack of cigarettes. I read it cover to cover in a half an hour. Not worth the price, I threw it away.
GREAT ON-THE-GO BOOK!!!.......2003-07-18
Well if you read at the top of the page (this means you Joan Sullivan) it states the dimensions perfectly clear. This book is awesome for traveling or if your going to be stuck in line or traffic or whatever. Its a miniature version of the BRI's Absolutely Absorbing Bathroom Reader. I reccomend it to anybody needing a good read. Theres tons of totally useless information like. . .
.How to play Ballbuster
.The birth of the American Flag
.How dreaming and learning are connected
.Stupid things people try after seeing it in a movie
.Before making cars, how David Buick perfected the modern bathtub
AND MORE!!!
Little Value.......2002-12-05
I think Amazon.com is remiss in not putting a clear indication further up on the page that this is a miniature book. Did not think I needed to scroll down beyond "Customers who bought this book also bought..." to find that out. Clearly they could have indicated it in parentheses next to the title instead of burying it below. The book is smaller than the palm of my hand. The fact that it is a hardcover makes it even more difficult to read and keep open. Many of the pages are stuck together near the binding and tear if you try to open the book all the way. Not really a book, more like a novelty. Even the link for a larger image makes it look like a full size book. What a waste of Christmas shopping time.
