Book Description

This collection of short stories, both poignant and skillfully crafted, bring to life the tragic demise of traditional Nubian life and culture. If the earlier dams that were built across the Nile during the first half of the twentieth century caused increasing numbers of the men to migrate north to Cairo and Alexandria to work as servants, waiters, and doormen, the completion of the High Dam in 1964 sounded the death knell. While the temples of Abu Simbel were meticulously relocated at great expense, the drowning of the ancient heartland of the Nubian people along the banks of the Nile went largely unnoticed.

Haggag Oddoul’s work, as well as documenting the personal tragedy of individuals caught up in massive social transformation, also casts a nostalgic light on the heritage and way of life of the Nubians: their rhythmic dancing, their beautiful women, the lively humor of their elders, and the enormous centrality of their traditions and the spirits with which they shared the environment.

Book Description

Millions of readers have discovered the magic of David Eddings’ New York Times bestselling series The Belgariad. Now the first three books in this monumental epic appear in a single volume. Here, long-time fans can rediscover the wonder—and the uninitiated can embark upon a thrilling new journey of fantasy and adventure.

It all begins with the theft of the Orb that for so long protected the West from an evil god. As long as the Orb was at Riva, the prophecy went, its people would be safe from this corrupting power. Garion, a simple farm boy, is familiar with the legend of the Orb, but skeptical in matters of magic. Until, through a twist of fate, he learns not only that the story of the Orb is true, but that he must set out on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger to help recover it. For Garion is a child of destiny, and fate itself is leading him far from his home, sweeping him irrevocably toward a distant tower—and a cataclysmic confrontation with a master of the darkest magic.

5 out of 5 stars Love it, always have!.......2007-08-15

Approximately 15 years ago, I was given a copy of Pawn of Prophecy (Belgariad). I quickly read all the Belgariad, then the Mallorean and moved on to Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress. I have never read anything like these books. Over the last 15 years I have read all these books at least 20 times. Everytime I read the series something else comes out of the books that i either didn't notice last time or that became more important as I aged. David and his wife Leigh Eddings intersperse just enough philosphy and aged wisdom to enhance the reading experience. Dialog is often funny, while maintaining the seriousness of the story.

For a great read, and an engaging read, I recommend you read the best series of books I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A little simple, but an engaging series that doesnt drag on forever.......2007-07-11

While the plot line is of a simplish epic quest, good vs evil, type, that doesnt detract from the enjoyment of reading these books at all. Not only is the entire series fast paced and full of action, but the interactions between the characters, whom I love dearly, are also very entertaining and hilarious.

Both this series, and its sequel series, are well worth the read, so buy them, and don't cheat yourself out of a great read by only buying the first few.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing inherently wrong with the writing but...........2007-07-06

I read some good reviews of this series and thought it might be worth checking out. There is nothing horrible about the writing. The storyline is interesting, though a bit of a cliche. The problem with the books (I only read the first two) is that every character is a stereotype. All Drasnians are cunning and secretive, all Chereks are big brutes who get drunk and like to fight, all Murgos are bad etc. etc. No one in the books seem to have a free thought apart from where they are from. There is nothing inherently bad about the writing, but I found the shallow stereotypical characters mundane and a little disturbing. But if you can read the books without actually thinking about what you are reading than go for it.

4 out of 5 stars A good, simple read!.......2007-06-21

I have to admit that when I started reading these stories, I felt the plot was somewhat slow. But keep going! the books are not all that long. You need to read through at least book 3, which is my favorite so far. Eddings writing gets better the further you read. Some people have complained that these stories are cliche. They are not exactly original, but if the writing is good, it's worth it to read them. Why can't we every now and then just read a good book and not worry about its originality, how deep is the story? Just once in awhile read a book and enjoy it for the journey it takes you on. This is one of those books!

1 out of 5 stars The Belgariad.......2007-05-31

I regret that I was forced to give it 1 star. If I had to write Cliff Notes for book one It would say "They went from here to there." Over the course of 5 books this kid casts 4 spells and at the end he is Fencing with a God and wins! I will say Eddings writes a character like no one. They really have a personality, but I found the entire experience of reading the Belgariad to be a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars The next best thing to reading the book........2007-03-11

I love this series, but I haven't been able to read it for a few years. This brings a whole new experience to the book and I can revisit what I recall from reading it.

4 out of 5 stars A good yarn.......2007-02-21

Eddings' saga of a boy caught up in a quest with his millenia old "aunt" Pol and "grandfather" Belgarath continues in Queen of Sorcery. Garion and company travel south in pursuit of the Orb of Aldur. The Murgo servants of Torak are in hot pursuit as they put up physical and political road blocks trying to stop Garion's friends, and sow dissension among the nations that would stand up to their evil master; the sleeping god Torak. Along the way Garion encounters people and customs he finds both attractive and repellent while he struggles with his changing identity. The world is far more complex than the boy realized. Adding to all the inner and outer turmoil is Garion's growing ability to perform magic; an ability he doesn't want, but must come to grips with before he destroys himself and those around him.

Again, Eddings weaves a compelling narrative with vivid characters and witty dialogue. The world he weaves is both foreign and familiar. Old fantasy fans won't find much that they have not already read, but this is still a ride worth taking.

4 out of 5 stars The series picks up speed..........2007-02-11

Though "Pawn of Prophecy" had its good points, "Queen" picks up the pace, with our heroes finally having a chance to start their quest. Although the series can be somewhat predictable, it remains an enjoyable read and one of my favorite fantasies. Eddings has a knack for producing interesting characters who have complex interpersonal relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of Sorcery.......2006-11-05

The second in the Belgariad series, the Queen of Sorcery is well done! I have the cd and a long drive to work, but not long enough. David Eddings has an extra-ordinary ability to place the reader into the story. Before you know it, you are laughing at Silk, in awe of Polgara and worried about Garion.

2 out of 5 stars The Plot widens (not thickens.. but widens).......2006-07-17

This is the second book of the Belgariad. This is also the book where the story picks up speed. The plot is finally revealed to those who haven't figured it out yet and we finally begin the pursuit of Zedar in earnest.

Note: My spelling of names may be awful since I heard these stories rather than read them myself.

Along with the characters we know to this point we pick up a fair amount of new ones. Mandorallen, the Mimbrate knight, Hettar the Algarian horseman who can talk to horses and C'Nedra, princess of Tolnedra.

The familiar characters are also going through changes. Garion is becoming a teenager with a serious streak of rebellion and, at the same time, is in the midst of discovering that he has powers that can do terrible things. Barak continues to learn about his particular curse, and Silk.. well.. Silk never changes that much but he provides most of the comic relief in the story.

I read these books when I was a teenager and am now re-reading them again several years later. I still enjoy most of the characters as much as I did but I had forgotten how much the female characters in this series grind on my nerves. Let me explain.

There is something about male fantasy writers that make them write female characters so that they are extremely unlikable. Polgrara is a perfect example of this: by the age of 15 she has not even started to teach Garion to read, she punishes the asking of questions and basically does her best to keep him ignorant so he won't do anything that she can't control. Polgara is a vile character that fans seem to love. There is only one truly accurate female trait that is written into Polgara's character is the ability to suck any fun out of any room (Having lived with women for 31 years, I can vouch for this one).

Now, it sounds like I am devaluing Polgara's character here but the conflict between Polgara and Garion finally comes to a head and creates one of the most intense personal moments in the entire series when Garion and Polgara finally face off in a very brutal argument.

Meanwhile the other main female character in this book is C'Nedra who is a whiney, spoiled little brat who (like most females) is only happy when screaming or whining or attacking someone at their weakest moment. It is C'Nedra that has caused me to almost close the book and give up on the series more than once in this novel.

Now, It looks like I just said a lot of bad stuff about women so I want to be clear. This is the image of women that Eddings (And Jordan and many other fantasy writers) have created. I don't like it and I only put up with it because I happen to love fantasy and you have to take the good with the bad.

All in all, the book is funny and much wider in scope than the first one and less focused than the next one. Just be prepared to be annoyed in some places.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2005-10-14

Eddings' series The Belgariad is one of my all-time favorite reads. It's the classic fantasy good-vs.-evil, coming-of-age, lost-kings-returning, quest-with-companions epic. These are common themes in fantasy, but Eddings' writing is so witty, and his characters so intriguing, that it never gets old. He seems very aware he is using some well established cliches, but puts new twists on them and even makes fun of them as the story goes on. I especially love Eddings' twist on the concept of prophesy: In this story, the prophesy is actually sentient, and does not hesitate to tell our hero, Garion, when he is being an idiot.
This series is funny, entertaining, engrossing, and complex. It was my introduction to the sword and sorcery genre of fantasy, and I absolutely love it.

5 out of 5 stars To bad it is all finished and in the past.......2004-04-17

I recomend all of david eddings books to any reader of any age.
David eddings is my idle in a short way of putting it... he has brought a new light to me and my writing since i was a child... His books have a certian amount of amusement in them. Yet the characters are all lovable. This is a book that i promise all will remember and read again... I love all of his books. his philosiphy is simple to understand, yet the writing syle is one that i still have not seen in any other books. He allows a certian amount of ammusement into them, yet keeping them serious. His books are like a good movie that you dont want to end. After reading one of them you want more and more. until you have devoured the very sould of his writing.

To put it short i dont know why i like them there just fun loving and honest to god books.

5 out of 5 stars Belgariad & Malloreon. My Favorite........2004-04-02

I have never came across a set of books that is so moving, very few authors have made me as emitional as this athor has with this set.I hope their will be a follow up,it would be nice to see how everything whent after all was said and done, peace doesn't last for ever. Highly recomened, own the full set, have read them so much I can almost tell the story myself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Entry-to-Mid-level Fare.......2001-10-16

This is, I believe, Eddings' first real foray into the realm of true Fantasy, and it doesn't disappoint. Eddings does well to develop characters over time and doesn't sacrifice depth for brevity. I've always enjoyed the sense of humor he brings to his works and the repartee that develops between the characters.

If you are looking for a great starter series in the fantasy genre or a more developed work, look no further. Those looking for the complexity and seriousness of high-fantasy should stick with Tolkien and Donaldson.

This was one of my favorite starting fantasy series, and continues to entertain after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars Praise-worthy.......2001-06-23

David Eddings' Belgariad series is one of the masterpieces of modern fantasy literature. I fell in love with his books many years ago, and re-read them to this day. His characters are lifelike and amusing, and written in a very human manner. Every time I read, I feel like I am visiting with old friends. Although Eddings writes conflicts into his story, he writes with an assurance that success will come which parallels the great epics of history. His novels, though not thrilling, are relaxing and enthralling in a more stoic fashion-- you will care about the characters and want to see them succeed.

I would recommend this book to the starting fantasy reader, or the reader of modern fiction who hasn't yet delved into the genre. Eddings' personal style and lovable characters have turned me into a dedicated fantasy reader, and I have not yet found his equal among the other authors I've read.

              3 out of 5 stars Could have been better . . ........2002-05-30

Part of the reason that I stopped buying modules from Wizards of the Coast was the fact that they put the stats for the npcs and monsters in the BACK of the module, forcing me to flip back and forth during play, or take that much MORE time in preparation for the adventure to write the stats out separately. The whole point of a module is to be a CONVENIENCE to the DM, not a HINDRANCE.

I love the drow. Monte Cook is a wonderful writer and his take on the drow is fantastic. But the fact that he used Wizards's style when designing the module really lowered the playability for me. This immediately knocked two stars off of my rating.

The series deals with the conflict between the old and corrupt interstellar Empire, and the Ecolitan Institute of the planet Accord. The Institute ostensibly a training academy in ecology, is in reality a progressive force reminsicent of Isaac Asimovs Foundation. Both novels were initially published as mass market originals and are now out of print. The two books form a complete story arc.

              5 out of 5 stars A Hero Gone Rogue.......2004-06-09

Empire & Ecolitan (2001) is an omnibus edition of the first and second novels in The Ecolitan Matter series according to the internal chronology. It includes The Ecolitan Operation and The Ecologic Secession.

The United Confederation of Independent Worlds -- otherwise known as the Empire -- is an hegemony of over 190 worlds plus their colonies and other dependencies. The capital of the Empire is at New Augusta on Terra, although many support functions are based off-planet, particularly on Alphane.

The Emperor is the titular head of the United Confederation, but most power resides in the Senate. The Empire nominally includes about fifty semi-autonomous planets on the fringes. The largest principality in this region is the Conglomerate of Fuard, which is aggressively flaunting its military might.

The Empire has long ago ceased to work for the welfare of its member planets, but instead has strived for maintenance of the status quo and perpetuation of the institutions of the Empire itself. The dependent worlds have been hit the hardest with increased taxes and conscripted troops. Armed rebellions have occurred sporadically throughout the colonies.

In The Ecolitan Operation (1989), Major Jimjoy Earle Wright III is a Special Operative for the Imperial Space Service who manages to successfully complete the most difficult missions, but who displeases his superiors with the intemperate violence of his methods. They would prefer something more subtle, but Jimjoy does whatever must be done to achieve the objective. In his current mission, he causes a fusion plant explosion to kill off the Halstani High Command, but has a collateral kill count of over fifty thousand bystanders. His case officer sends him next to Accord to report on the Ecolitan Institute, but the Empire has a lethal surprise waiting for him on the planet.

In The Ecologic Seccession (1990), Jimjoy is now Ecolitan Professor James Joyson Whaler II, Senior Fellow of the Institute. The Empire believes that he is dead and hopefully they will continue to do so. Jimjoy has created a new department within the Institute -- Applied Ecologic Management -- which is actually the new Special Operations branch. It is clear to Jimjoy and to the Ecolitan Prime that the Empire will soon be imposing more stringent controls on Accord and that the planet must rebel to keep its liberty. As a first step, Jimjoy single-handedly destroys the System Control station at Haversol.

These novels are mostly about the ethics of violence, personal and social. All ethics are contingent upon survival; i.e., survival of yourself or your descendants or your group is a prime concern. However, certain methods of survival are wrong, for they destroy they very things you wish to preserve. These novels explore the ethical limits of defense of a society -- that is, a large group of people -- which is threatened by external forces. What types and degrees of violence are legitimate under those circumstances? Are civilians legitimate targets of violence and, if so, under what conditions? The author raises some interesting questions, but more importantly, he points out the uncertainties surrounding all such issues.

Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of political intrigue and special operations with a touch of romance.

5 out of 5 stars Great book: interesting characters and plot........2001-07-03

This book was originally published as a duology (The Ecologic Operation and The Ecologic Secession...search under these titles for more reviews), but the transition between the two books is seamless so reprinting as a single book works well.

This book keeps you turning the pages with interesting characters, great action scenes, and a nicely tuned plot. If you are an avid book reader you will find similarities in style and plot to a number of other great series such as Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, Piers Anthony's Bio of a Space Tyrant, and Chris Brunch's Matador.

                Book Description

For more than two hundred years American Catholics have struggled to reconcile their national and religious values. In this incisive and accessible account, distinguished Catholic historian Jay P. Dolan explores the way American Catholicism has taken its distinctive shape and follows how Catholics have met the challenges they have faced as New World followers of an Old World religion. Dolan argues that the ideals of democracy, and American culture in general, have deeply shaped Catholicism in the United States as far back as 1789, when the nation's first bishop was elected by the clergy (and the pope accepted their choice). Dolan looks at the tension between democratic values and Catholic doctrine from the conservative reaction after the fall of Napoleon to the impact of the Second Vatican Council. Furthermore, he explores grassroots devotional life, the struggle against nativism, the impact and collision of different immigrant groups, and the disputed issue of gender. Today Dolan writes, the tensions remain, as we see signs of a resurgent traditionalism in the church in response to the liberalizing trend launched by John XXIII, and also a resistance to the conservatism of John Paul II. In this lucid account, the unfinished story of Catholicism in America emerges clearly and compellingly, illuminating the inner life of the church and of the nation. Jay Dolan's history of the church in America makes one overwhelming point--that the crisis in the church today is part of a long struggle lasting over 200 years by the American church to define itself as part of and in opposition to both Rome and America at the same time. Dolan examines the collision between the traditional, European, immigrant, authoritarian church and the modern, American, democratic society in which it found itself from several perspectives. The issue of local control of churches has been a long-standing one, and indeed the early church in the US experimented with lay trusteeship of parishes. Immigrants coming to the US with a thirst for freedom also struggled to retain local control over the parishes they built and supported. Sometimes these arguments erupted among immigrant groups, sometimes with Rome.

Devotional practices for Catholics were also very different from those of their Protestant neighbors, used to more austere practices, who were likely to regard Catholics as superstitious and of the Old World. For a long time, a debate raged over whether one could be both Catholic and American; much anti-Catholic sentiment arose from Catholics' efforts to distinguish themselves from their neighbors. These slowly changed in the 20th century of course in response to Vatican II, but also as Americans moved away from Old World traditions. The emergence of women as important players in American society, at the same time as women argued for equality in England, also put pressures on the church still being felt to this day to an extent much greater than some more traditional Catholic countries.

Perhaps the greatest argument is a philosophical one--is the church part of or apart from society; should the church embrace or reject modernity; should the church respond to the times or remain unchanged for all time? These arguments went on at the very beginnings of the US 200 years ago and are still being argued today as the church fights off the biggest crisis in its history in this country. Perhaps these issues are more intense in a country that considers itself among the most democratic, the most open, the most modern in the world.

Dolan's work is a bit slow-going at times, and maybe a little too scholarly for the casual reader. But the points are valid, and caution against expecting an easy, prompt resolution of the current crisis. As ties to Western Europe weaken, and fewer and fewer Americans identify themselves as having two nationalities, obedience to a foreign, Roman hierarchy, which seems not to understand American culture and society, feels more and more alien. How it will be resolved remains to be seen.
