5 out of 5 stars Nellcott May Be Her Darling, But Alice Is My Hero.......2005-11-19

Golda Fried takes us deep inside of Alice Charles, her incredibly fresh and naïve character who takes our heart and makes us remember every awkward moment of the path toward womanhood. Alice, our hero, is unsure of herself and awkwardly waiting to have her first real love. When she finally finds him, she has just one problem: her virginity. Nellcott, Alice's first love, is really no darling at all. The sweet Alice is instantly drawn to his "bad-boy" appeal; he is drawn to her naiveté and sweetness, like dark to light. To his credit, though, the eyeliner- wearing aspiring rocker does not take Alice's virginity lightly. He is surprisingly patient, despite his shock at her virginity.
" What were you doing all of high school?" he asks upon her confession, which occurs just moments before he is poised to make love with his boots still on.

Despite her attempts to be a bohemian Montreal girl, Alice is still very much her parent's daughter, the same loving parents, who, after replacing Alice with a dog, lovingly attempt to find out if their daughter is still a virgin during their Thanksgiving meal by asking outright: " Everyone at this table who's had sex before, raise your hand." A mortified Alice freezes as their hands shoot straight up in the air.

In an era where children grow up entirely too fast, and middle-schoolers "do it" routinely and without pause, it is nice to know Alices do exist, as rare as they may be. Like Alice, they too struggle their sexuality and their need to define themselves as women, and not just as daughters.

Thank you, Golda Fried, for giving us a wonderland in Alice, who is both our darling and our hero.

5 out of 5 stars An edgy read.......2005-11-14

I love reading books like this because they make me think I'm part of some cool, hip crowd that "gets" these books. Fried writes in minimalist terms, yet that doesn't keep both the story and characters from having a whallop of an impact. I found myself thinking about Alice for weeks after I'd finished the book--replaying some of the scenes and dialogue in my mind. "Nellcott is My Darling" is up for a major book award in Canada and after reading it, it's easy to see why. This is a gifted author and I look forward to reading her next novel.

4 out of 5 stars Alice in Transition.......2005-08-07

I am no expert in girls coming of age. If you doubt me, ask my daughter. Still we could all be better for knowing Fried's Alice. Alice is more amenable than Jane Eyre and more secure than Franny Glass. She is the emergent heroine for our era.

Golda Fried's language is economical and sincere. Her episodes ring true. Her analogies are sound. You'll laugh out loud at her metamorphisis. It is our own.

Read it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonky, wispy, and wonderful........2005-08-07

Who knew that such dreamy decsriptions of love, longing, and life could be so achingly accurate. Golda Fried writes from the corners of her heart.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite author.......2005-08-06

Golda is so funny and deep at the same time. Her metaphors are wonderful...."'Stay away from boys, her dad said. They will only rape you and leave you with nothing.' Her parents looked back and forth at each other and then at Alice. Alice felt like running, like calling Nellcot, but he would somehow find out where they were and show up at their table like a spilt drink."

As I read the book, I felt each scene as if I were in it myself...."Allegra yanked Alice to the women's bathroom. Their trips to the bathroom were becoming familiar. Allegra spent ten minutes putting on her deep raspberry-bruise lipstick and then kissed Alice on the cheek, making Alice feel like a substitute tissue."

The truth about how confusing relationships can be is easily understood in this charming story....
"'Why don't you ever call me?' he asked her.
'You usually call me. You don't even have an answering machine if I did call you.'
'You could call me at work.'
'But you're working.'
'French girls are much more aggressive.'
'What does that mean?'
'It means, I guess we're going to have to practice this. I'm going to go home now and you're going back to your dorm and you are going to call me.'
'Will you answer?'
"We'll have to see.' He went home.

And I have felt just like this many times...but Golda Fried put it in such original terms......
"'I don't need another guy or anyone else telling me what to do. What do you tell people about me? Does he know I'm a virgin too?'
'Um'.
'God, Nellcot, Lovers should not bring their love to the light.'
'We aren't lovers.'
Ouch. A pigeon flew into a sordid cloud and her hair was violent on her face and if she had been chewing gum, it would have gotten caught in her hair."

The fact that I just want to quote the book in this review makes me realize it's like me saying...." Listen to this!....Isn't this great?" I read the book right through to find out how it ended. I was surprised in the end though and want to read the book again, this time savoring the very unique creative writing style of Golda Fried, my new favorite author. I hope she is working on her next book. I hope you who are reading this will have the rare pleasure of reading this book too.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, beautiful, enchanting.......2006-08-08

I admit that I first picked up this series because I knew there was a love story, and I can't resist a fantasy novel with a good love story. The first book, Luck in the Shadows, was good, filled with a story that took me by surprise, and had me buying the second book almost before I'd finished the first. Stalking Darkness was another hidden gem, and at the end, I thought nothing could beat the wonderful, touching story that filled it. Still, I wanted to continue on with the characters' stories, so I picked up Traitor's Moon.
I was a bit wary of the book; I've heard of it being the lesser of Ms. Flewelling's works. But just a few chapters in, I knew it was the best.
Yes, the story is mostly political intrigue, but that line has been building since the first chapter of the first book. Yes, Ms. Flewelling's writing style has changed, but, I think it has made a turn for the better. Her prose takes on an almost poetic tone as Alec and Seregil venture into the heart of Aurenen. My favorite line? 'Like the moon, I'll hang close to you through the night, reflecting your brilliance by virtue of my own dark surface.' Who can resist someone who writes as beautifully as that? The scenes she describes are equally as breathtaking, and most of them are just enchanting. I find myself smiling as I read through her descriptions of Sarikali, Akhendi, and all the other delightful places her creative imagination has come up with. The exchanges between her characters are as passionate and full of life as ever, if not more.
As our beloved character continue on their journey, a new language begins to develop, and things might become a bit more confusing. But compared to the other books, where whole sentences were spoken in unknown tongues and went untranslated, the new words here are easy enough to follow, and each is carefully explained. The long names are not difficult, either, if you're willing to take a few extra seconds to puzzle them out. The similarities between Aurenen names can become confusing sometimes, I admit, but I must say I've read far worse.
All in all, I would say that the flaws in this book are minor things, mostly changes in style, and any true, avid fantasy reader will appreciate the world and culture that Ms. Flewelling has brought to life for us. This is a jewel to be discovered, the best book of them all. Of course, I strongly recommend that you read the Luck in the Shadows and Stalking Darkness first; knowing the characters makes you love and appreciate them all the more. But when you've finished with them, don't hesitate to pick this book up. You will be missing out on something lovely if you don't.

5 out of 5 stars When is Book 4 coming.......2005-05-16

Traitor's Moon was a very exciting book. It was the 3rd book of the Nightrunner Series. I'm looking forward to book 4 and more adventures with Seregil and Alec.

4 out of 5 stars The series really starts to get interesting........2005-05-01

I will offer a view contrary to several of the other Amazon reviewers who seemed to like this book less than the first two in the Nightrunner Series. I thought that it was at least on par, and in some respects I actually liked it much better.

I enjoyed Luck In the Shadows and Stalking Darkness. At least, I enjoyed them enough to go ahead and pick up the third. My issue with them was that they were a little too focused on the individual characters. There was a whole lot of Destiny and Magical Quests going on. While Flewelling is a fresh writer, parts of the plots felt like stale retreads of similar books in the genre.

Traitor's Moon goes a lot farther down the road of politics. The Aurenfaie became a lot more interesting to me as parties quarreling about trade routes than they were as mystic Tolkeinish semi-elves. The plot line with Korathan and Poria was much more interesting and complex this time around. I was genuinely surprised by some of the character shifts, and that takes some doing.

I was a little bit disappointed to see that Flewelling has not written with these characters since Traitor's Moon. I think that I will wander back over and take another look at the Bone Doll's Twin. I had read it before I read these three books, and I believe that I am now inclined to give it another chance.

The Nightrunner series is recommended for Swords & Sorcery fantasy fans. While it has some adult situations, it should be fine for teenage readers. Begin at the beginning with Luck in the Shadows, and not here with Traitor's Moon.

4 out of 5 stars flawed.......2005-02-11

(I am not a native speaker, please overlook my style)

With the third book of the series Ms Flewelling shows us that even a most accomplished writer's inspiration may fall short.

To create a world, a whole culture, is a terrifying task: it took ages to Tolkien to create one and he failed (in a masterly way, but he failed); Ms Flewelling is a good writer, but not as good as Tolkien and she tries in this third episode of creating a second world in the same series...

The Aurenen are not believable nor lovable: un unmeshable mixture of millenarian wisdom and unexplainable barbarity.
Ms Flewelling has tried to avoid the elf commonplaces only to be punished by having created a world no one would ever care to go back to, least of all someone as clever, witty, unconventional as our hero.

This third episode being based exclusively on this homecoming it results in a failure too: it is often boring, nothing of what takes place makes any sense.
And still...
characters are still finely pictured: even the formerly unsufferable Beka becomes nearly believable and enjoyable. The love story of Seregil and Alec is now established, lacking therefore the thrill of the first two books, but it is outlined with lovely subtlety.
Ms Flewelling has made a heavily wrong choice; everyone should honestly admid though that it takes a very good writer to write a good book out of such a deficient background.

The book may still be worth reading and enjoys the assets deriving from the previous ones, therefore the four stars.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of her work.......2004-11-11

This was my last read of all the Flewelling books. I actually started with the later series first and made my way back. I love her books, I love her writing, I love her characters...........just not in this book. I had to keep reminding myself that these were the same characters from the first two books in the series, so far removed were they from their original surroundings. This book is all about politics and names and words you probably can't pronounce. This in itself usually doesn't bother me, but overall the story fell flat. I think the problem lies in that, as Flewelling states, this isn't meant to be a trilogy. As a standalone novel though, the book falls short too though, although that's how you feel when you read it. If you've read the first two books in this "series" I would suggest just leaving this one alone.

    5 out of 5 stars Thrilling conclusion!.......2006-07-14

Traitor's moon is the thrilling conclusion to the adventures of Seregil and Alek
Full of intrigue and complex political alliances, this book, like its predecessors, draws the reader in from the opening page and does not release them until the end.
Every moment spent with Seregil and Alek and co is a delight. Her characters are definitely Lynn Flewelling's best trait. There are many extremely moving scenes in this book, and you start missing the characters the moment the book is closed. I for one hope that I haven't seen the last of Seregil and Alek!

Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above)... Wounded heroes of a cataclysmic battle, Seregil and Alec have spent the past two years in self-imposed exile, far from their adopted homeland, Skala, and the bitter memories there. But as the war rages on, their time of peace is shattered by a desperate summons from Queen Idrilain, asking them to aid her daughter on a mission to Aurenen, the very land from which Seregil was exiled in his youth. Here, in this fabled realm of magic and honor, he must at last confront the demons of his dark past, even as Alec discovers an unimagined heritage. And caught between Skala's desperate need and the ancient intrigues of the Aurenfaie, they soon find themselves snared in a growing web of treachery and betrayal.

5 out of 5 stars An untold story of a God.......2007-10-01

Klingon mythos are treated on the series as a footnote rather than an established fact. This Novel seperates the man from the myth.If you follow Star Trek closely like I do then you can easily recognized the legend of Kahless and instead of unknown references and stories about him, you'll get the truth from his own words.

It's amazing how well this Novel is written and how they really paid attention to detail. All the stories told always have a motitum of truth behind them as well as the actual truth inserted. You'll really see who Kahless was as a man and how he would in the coming centuries is remembered as a savior of the Klingon Empire and celebrated as a God.

Even the side story with Riker,Troi and Alexander Rozenko is really well done and doesn't suffers from the pitfalls of the side stories from previos ST Novels.

But the main plot will have reading until exhaustion. It's one of those rare Novels you simply can't put down. And if you're a huge Klingon fan like I am you have to read this Novel. One of the best Star Trek Novels in my collection and one that you can't aford to pass up.

Read and enjoy. You won't be disapointed I promise.

4 out of 5 stars What happens when the truth of Kahless catches up with the legend?.......2006-02-24

You had to know if Spock could meet the image of Surak, father of all the Vulcans now hold to be true, then we should not have been surprised that Worf would get to meet Kahless the Unforgettable. However, when the most famous Klingon of them all was resurrected via cloning in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Rightful Heir," Kahless 2.0 became the Emperor of the Empire again and a symbolic but still unifying figure. "Kahless" is a "STNG" novel by Michael Jan Friedman (who wrote the comic book for DC), are purports to provide the truth behind the legend of the Klingon Empire's greatest warrior (and did you know they have trademarked the word "Klingon"?).

"Kahless" is a double-tracked novel, where we begin in "The Modern Age" of "STNG," and then go back to "The Heroic Age" in which the original Kahless lived. The story takes place in the eighth year of Jean-Luc Picard's command of the "Enterprise-D," which means it takes place between the events of the show's final episode, "All Good Things," and before what happens in the theatrical film "Star Trek Generation." Olahg, one of the clerics of Boreth, is part of a team excavating one of the sacred locations where Emperor Kahless had walked. He discovers a buried box that contains a scroll that purports to be the work of Kahless the Unforgettable, and written on the scroll are word that can only be considered blasphemy by the faithful in the Empire.

What the words on the ancient scroll do is through into doubt the ancient stories that have been passed down regarding Kahless. Of course, what this is really about is seeing the man behind the legends, and no one, not even Kahless the Unforgettable, can stand up to the mythology that has sprung up about him. For fifteen hundred years the Klingons have revered Kahless as not just their first emperor and the man who first united their people, but as the legendary warrior who taught the Klingons the meaning of honor. All Klingon children learn of how Kahless and his brother Morath fought for 12 days and nights because Morath had broken his word and killed their father, dishonoring their family. If the truth strips away the myths and fables, the Klingons might not like what is left.

With the Klingon Empire threatening to come apart at the seems, Kahless turns to the few people he can trust, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lt. Worf of the starship "Enterprise." Friedman's book goes back and forth between the treachery, rumors, and possibility of civil war in the Modern Era with the story from the Heroic Age of the young Klingon warrior named Kahless who defied the tyrant Molor. The legend says Kahless forged the first bat'leth and founded the Empire after slaying the tyrant, a battle celebrated with the Kot-baval festival. But we learn that while Kahless was concerned with preserving his honor and the safety of his family, but once he reluctantly became the leader of the rebels, he had to make decisions on a more practical basis.

I appreciate the idea that myths and legends spring up around what we would call world historical individuals, and distort the "real" them. Abraham Lincoln was arguably the most hated man in America, in the North as well in the South, pretty much until the night he was assassinated. The problem, such as it is, would be that we only know bits and pieces of the legend and lore of Kahless from a handful of episodes, mostly from "STNG" and usually involving Worf because the big irony is that the one Klingon officer in Starfleet is probably the most ideologically pure follower of Kahless around, which is why the cloned emperor can trust him. But this gives Friedman plenty of space to flesh out the story so he gets to stack the deck the way he wants. Still, those who are particularly interested in the Klingon culture will have to at least check this one out and see what they think of what Friedman came up with. Just remember, "qaStaHvIS wa' ram loS SaD Hugh SIjlaH qetbogh Ilod" (I know others have said it here, but it is so true).

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Star Trek novel, but offers some perspective.......2005-09-13

If you are looking for the greatest bit of prose ever offered in the genre, you will be disappointed. Michael Jan Friedman is not my favorite Star Trek writer. However, despite the fact that this novel does what I HATE Star Trek novels to do, bounce back and forth between the "present" of Tne Next Generation and the past of the Klingon Empire 1500 years ago, it does offer an insight into the history of the Klingon Empire.

What are Kingons? What is their legacy? In "In the Name of Honor," which takes place in the time period of "The Original Series," we learn of the ideological struggle and change going on within Klingon society. In that novel, the teachings of Kahless gain a new vigor in Klingon society. However, decades later, that "fundamentalist" Kahless teaching comes under assault. The present-day Picard is off on a mission to determine that is going on within the Klingon Empire. In this novel, we learn the truth about Kahless. This novel isn't about fighting, it is about doing what is honorable. What we don't know at the conclusion of this novel is the eventual long-term impact on Klingon society due to what has been discovered about Kahless's life.

This isn't the best written Star Trek novel, and I really hate bouncing from a past time to the present. However, if you want to get a look at Klingon culture, this is one of the few novels that afford that opportunity.

4 out of 5 stars STNG Kahless - A Star Trek story that needed to be told!.......2003-12-07

Star Trek's most prolific author, Michael Jan Friedman, in "Kahless" takes on the task of telling the tale of Kahless the Unforgettable which is a story that, while unfortunately is was not explored thoroughly in either The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine, needed to be told!

While Star Trek The Next Generation and the character of Worf did a great amount in furthering our knowledge of the Klingons and their culture, with Worf making the move over to Star Trek Deep Space Nine at the beginning of the fourth season did so much more in furthering that knowledge but it also brought up some serious contradictions. As this novel was probably finished somewhere around February of 1996 and Deep Space Nines fourth season started only a short time before that, there are definitely "some" contradictions, but they're minor.

As is usual with a Michael Jan Friedman novel, the premise, plot setup, execution and pacing are all extremely well done in this novel, the only detractor being some of the fight scenes which aren't played out to the author's usual high standard. The cover art for this novel is pretty good for the time in which it was published.

                  The Star Trek History:

For those that may not be entirely familiar with the story of Kahless the Unforgettable and how his character came into play during Star Trek The Next Generation's run on television. Late in the fifth season of STNG, one of the most intriguing and telling episodes of the series aired, "Rightful Heir." In this episode, Worf had recently lost his faith after his experience on Carraya IV and finds himself not performing his duties very well. He chooses to take leave to go to the Klingon monastery on Boreth, the Klingon spiritual world to seek Kahless. As legend described, as he lay dying, Kahless promised his return and pointed to the star in which Boreth revolves.

After several days of seeking Kahless, Worf becomes even more despondent when Kahless doesn't appear to him. As he is about to give up, Kahless comes to him, not in a vision but in flesh and blood. After much political intrigue, Kahless is discovered to be a clone when Gowron, Chancellor of the Klingon Empire, easily defeats him in hand to hand combat. Through great lengths on Worf's part and in an effort to save the flailing empire, Gowron allows the Kahless clone to take the ceremonial role of Emperor of the Klingon Empire.

                  STNG Kahless - The premise:

The Klingon Empire and its culture is one that steeped in legend and tradition. Much of that tradition of honor is placed in the tales of Kahless the Unforgettable who is in essence the one Klingon that their religion is based upon. When the monks on Boreth cloned Kahless, they gave him all of this myth and legend as memories of his own. With these memories, Kahless the clone now sits upon the ceremonial thrown of the Klingon Empire, leading the empire spiritually.

A recent archaeological dig uncovered a scroll, presumably written by Kahless himself. This scroll, once made public, puts everything the Klingons believe in into to question as it is blasphemous to every tale ever told about Kahless. As the dissent starts to mount, Kahless the clone discovers a plot against him and, seeing treachery everywhere in the empire, he seeks the aid of Captain Picard and Lieutenant Worf.

What follows from there is a well told story in which Michael Jan Friedman takes us back and forth between the "Modern" age and the "Heroic" age, weaving the tale and plight of the Kahless of legend and the Kahless of today.

                  I highly recommend this novel as it serves well to further the story of Kahless the Unforgettable; it is essentially a story in the Star Trek mythos that "needed" to be told! {ssintrepid}

4 out of 5 stars A great star trek book.......2003-01-25

To those who are not familiar with Star Trek. During the Next Generation series the original Kahless was cloned by some Klingon clerics by using his DNA. The cloned Kahless was made a figurehead emperor. Michael Jan Friedman novel is about this Kahless. Apparently a Klingon cleric has found a scroll that reveals that the legend of Kahless is not what everyone assumed it to be. Instead of being a great warrior he was a man pushed into a situation beyond his control. The validity of the restored emperor becomes suspect. This threatens to throw the Klingon empire into a civil war (WHAT ELSE IS NEW !! ).

The story goes back and forth between the present and the time of the original Kahless. Of course Lt. Worf is at the center of the controversy. He was appointed to analyze the documents ( a copy was sent to him on the Enterprise). The documents were found to be authentic. The real Kahless wrote and left the documents in order to clarify the legend that was growing about him.

This book is one of the better Star Trek novels. Michael Jan Friedman is probably the best Star Trek author. He does an excellent job in describing (or better yet creating) Klingon culture, especially ancient Klingon culture that is not described in any of the Star Trek series or movies.

                  Book Description

The fiercest battles and proudest warriors throughout Klingon history are said to reflect the honor and glory of the race's first emperor, Kahless the Unforgettable. But history is not always truthful. And for both the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets, the real truth may be too difficult to accept.

In the pages of a novel disclaimed by Starfleet, an enemy offers his perspective on events that transpired during the formative years of Klingon-Federation relations in the early twenty-third century. Chronicling the life story of Krenn, a Klingon war strategist who learns of peace while on a mission to Earth, the novel is a testimony to his efforts to preserve the honor of his people¨by preventing total war against the then-struggling Federation.

Nearly a century later, a clone of the revered Kahless oversees the Klingon Empire. But when the myths and legends associated with the original emperor are disputed following the discovery of an ancient scroll, the new Kahless faces treason from within his own council, and impending civil war that could tear the empire apart. His sole chance for restoring his people's shattered faith must come from the outside -- specifically, from Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Worf of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING: COMPILATION, NOT A ST NEW NOVEL.......2005-01-17

This is NOT a new Star Trek novel: it is merely a compilation of two previously released ST novels, Kahless, and The Final Reflection. My one star rating reflects my annoyance at having to return what I thought was a new novel when I purchased it. The rating is not a commentary on either of the novels included in this compilation, both of which I thought were quite good.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, practical guide to liturgy from a feminist perspective.......2006-05-24

Teresa Berger's wide-ranging book on Christian liturgy is by far one of the best books I've read on the subject. It's structured as a series of meditations on the liturgical year, beginning with the feast day of St. Mary Magdalene and proceeding through Advent and Lent to end with thoughts on Trinity Sunday, baptism, and the ordinary rituals of ordinary time.

Throughout the book, Berger consolidates key insights of feminist theology to critique specific features of traditional liturgical practice and provide positive contributions to Christian practice in community. The theme of spiritual guidance as midwifery plays a strong part, as does a continuing meditation on the ways mothers in their giving play an under-appreciated eucharistic function in the church. There is even an illuminating discussion of rituals that connect people of various faiths.

The whole text, as well as many of the other works by feminist scholars that Berger cites, puts the lie to the notion that feminist theology is merely deconstructive or that it does not take the tradition seriously. In Fragments of the Real Presence, Berger shows how a feminist reclaiming of the Christian liturgical tradition might return that tradition to its spiritual roots, taking seriously the faith of devout Christians, male and female, throughout the centuries. Very highly recommended, especially for pastors and others involved in crafting liturgy for Christian communities.

                        5 out of 5 stars a pleasant surprise.......2006-01-15

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. Sometimes books on feminism are loaded with feminist theory and loose with history. This one is solid: rich in the facts, accessible, and well organized. It would be good for a classroom and as a resource for ministers throughout the liturgical calendar. Read and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Stirring of the Soul by a Great Scholar.......2005-05-27

My friend Kay and I, having been privileged participants in one of Professor Berger's seminars at Duke Divinity School, read the Introduction to this volume together and found ourselves profoundly moved by the reflections of this great Catholic Christian scholar. Fragments of Real Presence is the ideal book for women's study groups -- the attractive physical size of the book as well its user-friendly text and font is an added pleasure -- and promises to provide many sleepless nights for those moved to explore more deeply the movement of women in and through the Christian faith community.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait.......2005-05-01

There has been great anticipation for this book in women's scholarly circles. Teresa Berger, currently an associate professor at Duke University Divinity School, is best known as a world-class historian of Christian liturgy. Throughout her remarkably productive writing career, however, she has also written and spoken widely and well on a number of theological themes of direct interest to Christian women. So there is a sense of anticipation knowing that a serious English language work (many of her works have appeared in German) has been about to appear.

At its most basic level, Fragments of Real Presence takes us along the liturgical year through the eyes of women. Said in that way, however, the book might sound like one of those tired, overwrought projects in feminist reconstruction that give feminism a bad name. While you'll simply have to read the book to understand what makes it different, here's one attempt at explaining it. Berger doesn't simply describe a different way of looking at things. She performs it. She carries us into the middle of it all. And she is a skilled enough writer to do this. She can move effortlessly between pure poetry, popular description, and scholarly reflection. The more we read, the more we really start to enter into the world she is offering us, a world where liturgical forms are not the enemy of women's experience but a way of coming to understand it more richly.

Each reader will have his/her own favorite pieces. I was drawn to one piece weaving together an iconic representation of Mary and the real-life story of a woman who proved herself a dangerous caregiver lacking "maternal" skills. I also adored The ABCs that come near the end of the book -- they are a sort of glossary about love, more romantic than you'd expect from a scholar, and more honest and truth-telling than you get from romantics. I think most readers will also be especially drawn to the Advent and Christmas reflections, and those around Holy Week.

As I mention in the headline, the book has been worth the wait. It does not offer an easily digested concept or catch-phrase that students can write in their notebooks, and so it may not be destined to have the overt influence that some great works have. But it should have a long life as a goad to reflection as well as an example of truly poetic writing. Berger has "handed" us something quite powerful, a new way of seeing and thinking about a tradition that we too often see in limiting and restricting ways.
