Book Description

An extraordinary literary debut, this book is about the AIDS epidemic, the civil war in Beirut, death, sex, and the meaning of life. Daring in form as well as content, Koolaids turns the traditional novel inside out and hangs it on the clothesline to air.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars buy this book.......2002-07-02

This book is brilliant, able to be humorous and entertaining even as it takes you into some of the darkest moments of our time. The juxtaposition of the AIDS crisis in America and the War in Lebanon is an effective choice, it creates a new perspective to two very emotionally difficult and recent parts of our history that we are still collectively coming to terms with. as a gay lebanese-american i found the voices of Alameddine's characters to be particularly haunting. Mr. Alameddine is an exciting and daring writer and I anxiously anticipate his new works while re-reading his currently published books.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal, a book with a big message.......2001-06-25

I guess there is not much I can add, but being an Arab gay the book really touched me. A friend recommended me the book, so I recommended it to everyone of my friends.

The author is daring, you won't see that every day. Hope to see more books like this one. Every person should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite tapestry.......2000-08-29

Chronicling the effect of AIDS and war on the denizens of Beirut, Alameddine's dazzling novel has been cursed by a bland bookjacket. Blending humor and emotional depth, the story achieves an interpretation of the everyday chaos of life. If you're searching for something uplifting and stimulating to read, this is the book.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible cross cultural experience.......2000-06-09

I received this book as a birthday gift. As a Lebanese person, I found this book extremely enlightening and charming. It was everything I always felt, since I shared with the author a similar experience of growing up during the war times in Beirut. This book brought back old memories that are both painful and joyful.

Mr Alameddine's style is impeccable. You fly from character to character, from reality to dreams, to fiction, and then back to reality. His depiction of the Lebanese culture in the "play" he wrote about the two lebanese women in Paris is hilarious and unfortunately very true.

I think every Lebanese person should read this book. It connects very well with any person who grew up in two different cultures. It is time for our culture to face reality and deal with the issues of homosexuality and AIDS. I ordered Alameddine's next book "The Perv" and I can't wait to receive it.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting juxtapositions.......2000-01-20

Coming from a Lebanese-American family and living in Washington, I was interested in what Alemeddine was putting together in this book. Although it took me some time to touch each narrative to its central character -- there're quite a few central characters here -- I found the treatment of their separate but eerily similar situations sensitive and sensual. This is definitely worth reading, and I would hope that more English-speaking Lebanese and Lebanese-American writers come forth with valuable works.

          Book Description

The revelations on Mars -- a half-million year-old legacy of the vanished star-traveling Builders -- have fed the flames of catastrophic war. A beleaguered United States and its Russian and Japanese allies struggle to hold their own against the indomitable forces of the enemy United Nations. The bloody conflict that has swept over the home planet now rages across the blackness of space -- with the U.S. Marine Corps in the vanguard, leading the charge as always.

But Mars is not the sole repository of alien wonders. The Earth's moon hides unsettling mysteries of its own-and dangerous secrets pointing toward an unstoppable threat advancing from somewhere beyond the solar system. And as scientists on both sides ract to utilize technology they have only barely begun to comprehend, the UN makes the opening move in a gambit that could end the hostilities quickly and decisively by bringing about the death of millions...without the aid of alien-inspired weaponry.

A bad situation worsens by the nanosecond. And that means it's time to call in the Marines -- to make a life or death stand on the gray shores of Luna.

5 out of 5 stars Moon and Marines.......2007-06-01

The plot of part one continues. With the characters we came to know and love on Mars and an excellent storyline. Not only were there ruins on Mars, but there is something going on on the moon aswell and was it ever our moon? The Marines are as allways on the frontline.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one........2006-03-11

Not as good as the first book, but I think that's because I'm done being dizzy from how technically acurate the book is. Author should be proud.

          5 out of 5 stars absolutely awesome.......2005-12-18

This has got to be one of the best sci-fi stories ever written. I was amazed. Normally, I like casual sci-fi, if even that. I picked up this series as a fluke. Just kinda curious about it, I figured, hey, This one has gotten pretty good reviews. So I picked up all three, and started reading. By the time I was only a hundred pages into the first book, I couldn't stop. By the time I was really aware, I had read all three books, and looking for the first of the Legacy series. Let me say, anyone who likes military fiction, like Clancy or Brown, or any type of Sci-Fi, PICK UP THIS SERIES!!!!!!!

          5 out of 5 stars The Lunar Crater-Hopping Campaign.......2005-08-16

Once again, Ian Douglas has written an excellent bit of military sci-fi. "Luna Marine" takes place two years after "Semper Mars" and continues the war with the UN. This time, however, the focus is not on Mars, but the gray shores of Luna. More alien artifacts are discovered, answering many questions from the previous book...and leaving you with many more. The combat scenes are just as good as, if not better than, the last book. Douglas also manages to use several characters from the previous book, which gives a greater connection to the reader than if he were to start with a clean slate.

Once again, there are a few cultural stereotypes that Douglas sticks in that the book could do without. Don't let that stop you from picking it up though. I recommend it to anyone into military sci-fi or the USMC.

          Book Description

Conventional engineering solutions to problems of flooding and erosion are extremely destructive to natural environments. Restoring Streams in Cities presents viable alternatives to traditional practices that can be used both to repair existing ecological damage and to prevent such damage from happening.

Ann L. Riley describes an interdisciplinary approach to stream management that does not attempt to "control" streams, but rather considers the stream as a feature in the urban environment. She presents a logical sequence of land-use planning, site design, and watershed restoration measures along with stream channel modifications and floodproofing strategies that can be used in place of destructive and expensive public works projects. She features examples of effective and environmentally sensitive bank stabilization and flood damage reduction projects, with information on both the planning processes and end results. Chapters provide:

Profusely illustrated and including more than 100 photos, Restoring Streams in Cities includes detailed information on all relevant components of stream restoration projects, from historical background to hands-on techniques. It represents the first comprehensive volume aimed at helping those involved with stream management in their community, and describes a wealth of options for the treatment of urban streams that will be useful to concerned citizens and professional engineers alike.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and comprehesive guide.......2001-08-13

This unique book is a comprehensive and detailed guide to how to go about restoring streams that have been degraded by channelization, excessive erosion or sedimentation, and undergrounding into storm drains. It covers everything from how to form Friends groups and develop public support through engineering and design choices. As an educated citizen without specialized training in engineering, I found it highly readable; the concepts are presented thoroughly but without excessive jargon. The author is a cofounder of the Urban Creeks Council of California and the Coalition to Rescue Urban Waters.

3 out of 5 stars Planning and policy related to urban stream restoration.......1999-02-06

This book does an adequate job of generally presenting information in non-technical fashion for planners, policy makers, and citizens as related to stream restoration in cities. It is simplistic and fairly straight-forward reading for the layman interested in this topic.

On page 128, there is a diagram showing "factors influencing stream erosion and sedimentation" which appears to be attributed to Mr. E W Lane in an American Society of Civil Engineers professional journal dated 1955. However, a closer inspection of this particular journal article by interested readers should reveal to them that the figure shown in Riley's book in reality doesn't actually appear in the journal itself; although the diagram's concepts themselves are given in the journal article. So the question remains, WHO ACTUALLY DREW THE DIAGRAM in Riley's book and WHY WEREN'T THEY PROPERLY RECOGNIZED IN IT?

And HOW MANY OTHER MIS-LEADING OVERSIGHTS are possibly contained in the book?

From a hydraulic and hydrologic technical and design stand-point, this book appears weak and I feel that citation problems like I previously mentioned are inexcusable and not acceptable for a published book.

Thus my average rating of it.

              Book Description

Not many years ago, killer whales had a reputation that was even fiercer than their name. But in 1964 the Vancouver Aquarium obtained its first killer whale, Moby Doll, and for the first time the public got a personal look at one of these much-feared marine mammals. It was soon discovered that they were not the vicious man-eaters of legend. Attitudes began to change and today they are revered as loveable, intelligent creatures, iconic symbols of the marine environment.

In January 2002, a young killer whale was discovered alone in the waters of Puget Sound near Seattle. Determining that the whale would not survive alone so far from home, a team of scientists captured "Springer" and transported her by boat north to her home range where she rejoined her family.

At the same time Springer was making her historic journey, another lone whale turned up in Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The people of Nootka Sound adopted "Luna" as their own, but he was a large, boisterous youngster who liked to cuddle boats and the government feared he would get into trouble. Another rescue was planned to return Luna to his family but this time there was no happy ending.

In Operation Orca, award-winning author Daniel Francis gives breadth to the complications, contradictions, and political posturing that twice engulfed the debate of whether to interfere or let nature take its course. Through the amazing story of these two "orphan" whales, Operation Orca tells the larger story of orcas in the Pacific Northwest, the people who have studied them and the transformation of the whale's image from killer to icon.

Bum Rush the Page is a groundbreaking collection, capturing the best new work from the poets who have brought fresh energy, life, and relevance to American poetry.

“Here is a democratic orchestration of voices and visions, poets of all ages, ethnicities, and geographic locations coming together to create a dialogue and to jam–not slam. This is our mouth on paper, our hearts on our sleeves, our refusal to shut up and swallow our silence. These poems are tough, honest, astute, perceptive, lyrical, blunt, sad, funny, heartbreaking, and true. They shout, they curse, they whisper, and sing. But most of all, they tell it like it is.”
                –Tony Medina, from the Introduction

                4 out of 5 stars A performer's must have!.......2006-12-20

As a performing artist, I have used this anthology for myself and for my students to learn and be able to perform a variety of poetry. many subjects are discussed and the students can relate to the many voices. many of them have used them as monologues for auditions. Of all the books on the shelf, this was has the most worn pages... :-)

5 out of 5 stars kinda urban kinda fresh kinda funky.......2006-01-24

this book is probably the new testament of slam/spoken/performance poetry (Aloud being the old testament). the works here are very fresh and urban; urban to hip hop and the slam community. def poetry jams are the sickest and illest form of poetry. the works within can bring the fun and funk at the same time. there is a myriad of emotion and issues at hands, each poem is strong and in your face with the arts. this is fine arts at its finest. poetry is not dead, it was never in a state of rest, society was just too ignorant to notice it. Bum Rush the Page throws poetry back into everyday society and culture, forcing people to open their minds. it is loud, it is fresh, it is slam!

                4 out of 5 stars Mouth Open & Closed.......2003-05-23

Some poetry is hard to read on the page because it needs to be recited out loud. But poems like "A Poet is not a jukebox" by Dudley Randall are so tight they could be read out loud or on a page and still be flawless. Some of the poems were great! Others could've stayed in the poets head ("It's called Kings" by by Susana Cabanas). Overall, I thought the book was cool but the show is better by a long shot.

                5 out of 5 stars bum rushing.......2002-10-15

bum rush the page will be hailed as a classic in the years to come. Combining established poets like Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez with up and coming poets like Shaggy Flores, Mariposa and Thien Bao Phi. The subject matter is broad and the chapter titles read like a poem itself. From the foward by Sonia Sanchez
you know the ride will be better, every openign poem of each chapter will draw you in, asking for more, wanting you to write a poem, making you love the poem and understanding that poetry isn't only shakespeare and his sonnets. Bum Rush the Page will live in cirriculums for years to come. From Beau Sia's "Open Letter to the Entertainment Industry" to Bonafide Rojas"s "The Creed of a Graffiti Writer", these poems reflect poetry in the 21st century. Tony Medina and Louis Reyes Rivera have done justice to opening people's eyes on what poetry will always be, the voice of the people.

                3 out of 5 stars Okay, but...........2002-07-24

This was okay, but take a look at Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe. I read that book a few years ago, and still hold it one of my favorite books. I was hoping that this would be more of the same, but not quite.

Seattle's own Leo Waterman is back--along with the very motley crew of once and future alcoholics like Nearly Normal Norman who help him with his investigations. While looking for a missing member of the group, Leo and Co. stop a rape and get involved in the overdose death of a famous Seattle musician who might remind you of recent headlines. As in his two previous books in the Waterman series, Who in Hell is Wanda Fuca? and Cast in Stone, both available in softcover, G. M. Ford writes pungent, hilarious dialogue and manages to make us care about the lives of people we walk past on the street every day.

                Book Description

Packed with all the outrageous shenanigans that quickly marked Who in Hell is Wanda Fuca? and Cast in Stone as two of the most original mysteries in years, G.M. Ford crafts a devilishly funny and bat-out-of-hell paced novel featuring his smart-aleck yet irrepressible Seattle-based p.i., Leo Waterman.

Nobody loves you when you're down and out--except maybe Leo Waterman. As a man who has transformed a gaggle of residentially challenged devotees of cheap alcohol into a crack surveillance team, Leo has a soft spot for society's downtrodden. When a homeless woman says she's the mother of a deceased rock idol, Leo takes it upon himself to investigate the lady's claim, thereby embroiling the Boys, his dissolute deputies, and his own already bruised body in a high speed, life-threatening pursuit of the truth.

3 out of 5 stars Good Read, Lousy Climax.......2006-09-23

I enjoyed this first experience with Leo Waterman and his crack surveillance team of "residentially challenged" dipsomaniacs (an adult version of the Baker Street Irregulars), but I hate it when I'm only a couple of pages from the end of a book and the climax and resolution haven't even begun yet. Here, we're on page 288 of 301 for the penultimate scene. Leo and his gang have had plenty of time to set up the sting but it all happens too fast and almost gets away from them. I felt like I was getting the "Bum's Rush" through what could have been the best part of the book. Logically, there was no reason not to turn over what they knew to the cops and frankly, the regulars would have done a better job.

As to the NYTBR comment that "the cityscapes of Seattle are worth the trip", I agree, but I'd like to see the publishers (or author or fan group) put out a companion web page with (interactive) google maps annotated with pictures that would show us of the local scenery and let us follow the Leo around as he motors about in his modified Fiat.

                5 out of 5 stars Enthralling.......2002-07-21

I would have started with the first of the series, but was unable to find it (since I was away from the Northwest at the time), so I settled with book three. This story is perfect - believable characters, interesting plotline, the best dialogue I think i've ever read - weaved flawlessly into one very funny book.

Best of all G. M. Ford knows his city well and taps into some of its eccentricities well, which is a special treat for Northwesterners. After reading "Skid Road" by Murray Morgen, I would say that Leo Waterman's father is based off of Vic Meyers, a historic Seattle politician whose real campaigns were outrageously funny in their own right, which is just one little tidbit that gives a sense of realism and authority to the surroundings.

5 out of 5 stars Bum's Rush well worth the read.......1998-06-27

If you haven't read the first two Leo Waterman mysteries, then you should. G.M. Ford has created a cast as confused and convoluted as his own name. He keeps you laughing without pushing it too far, creates great tension, and manages to get Leo through another crises once again (relatively) unscathed. Once you read this one, you'll want to go back and catch-up with the first two.

If you want an easy to understand book on how to recognize the persuasive tactics used in the media, this is for you. Very informative in how to recognize when you are being manipulated .A great text for universities for linguistics, critical thinking, writing, ethics, political science, persuasive language, advertising, public policy, environmental science, and other courses.

Dittoheads will still be offended to learn how few sound arguments their hero uses. But, Rush haters may be disapointed. The author doesn't challenge Mr. Limbaugh's beliefs or opinions, only his arguments. If you liked "Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot", this probably isn't for you. But, if you enjoy critical thinking, this is a nice change of pace from the usual dry textbook.

                  Book Description

Four coming of age stories involving first love and friendship and the naive, injudicious, and ambitious decisions that accompany them. Four Stories is unconventionally written by combining elements of a stage-play, screenplay and novel.

                  Fools

Five friends deal with their deteriorating friendships at the hand of their romantic desires during their final year of high school.

                  Kazredlaw

A letter to God begins the story about a man who thinks he has figured out his purpose, to change the people close to him.

                  The Little Fellow

An unusually ambitious film student embarks on a film about a man making a movie. The hiring of a documentary team to follow his venture throws a wrench into all the character's lives.

                  Bum Rush

A quasi-fable centering on a homeless man who must gather his resources in order to keep his word to a friend.

4 out of 5 stars Stories about life.......2007-05-22

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (5/07)

The author, J.A. Walderzak, has written a collection of short stories combining the formats of stage plays, screenplays and novels. Each story focuses on characters in various stages of their lives. "Fools," is about five friends whose friendships are affected by actions that they choose to take in high school. The major issues that affected their friendships involved relationships with girls.

"Kazredlaw," which is Walderzak spelled backwards is about a man's letter to God in which he tells Him that he no longer desires to be a part of this world. The story involves him processing this decision. "The Little Fellow," had some lighter elements in it. It is a story about a film student who is making a film about an egocentric filmmaker making a movie about a man trapped in a cellar. "Bum Rush," is a story about a homeless man that is based upon actual events that occurred.

The characters in each story have interesting eccentricities that make the stories more enjoyable and add richness to the plot development. Not all of these characters are likeable, but their personalities resonate strongly through the pages. I found that Walderzak did a great job with both plot and character development. With his writings, you enter into the characters minds, so you really understand what they are feeling and what is happening.

While the format of using the stage-play and screenplay elements allows for a greater amount of details to be covered, I also found it somewhat distracting, because I would stop reading in the middle of a passage to read the footnote. This is not the best format for me to be able allow a story to flow. However, there were other positive aspects to using this format such as the previously mentioned comment about the additional flux of information that can be imparted in this manner.

"Four Stories," creates a lot of introspection as you read each story. They make you contemplate the meanings behind the main characters experiences. I enjoyed that this book created that kind of environment for me. It was not about fluffy, vacuous stories. You will enjoy reading this!

From the supplier: Security expert Steve Keller says that museums should assign one of its security personnel to look after troublesome visitors such as vagrants or homeless persons. Keller adds that this is the surest way of preventing these people from causing discomfort to other visitors. He also suggests that museums should institute a 'pay what you wish but you must pay something' policy for visitors. He also recommends that museums coordinate with a homeless shelter and ask how they can give fair treatment to homeless persons.

                            Book Description

With a penchant for adventure, is it no wonder photographer Patrick Cariou--whose first book, Surfers, drew tidal waves of praise--journeyed to Jamaica, a land that he calls "pure madness, and one of the most dangerous places on earth that is not at war." There he entered the secluded world of the Rastafarians, a world, culture, and religion closed to outsiders. Cariou slowly gained their trust, and they began to let him take their picture. With bold black-and-white portraits and landscapes, Cariou indelibly captured the strict, separatist, jungle-dwelling, fruit-of-the-land lifestyle--popularized by reggae legends Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Burning Spear-in never-before--seen images, until now. In Yes Rasta--the phrase spoken by true Rastafari when greeting each other-Cariou's direct, classical photographs reveal men whose style and attitude are as distinctive as their dreadlocks. Men who have left the modern world of Babylon in pursuit of their own independence. Men whose lives are intertwined with the tropical landscape, and whose rituals, symbols, philosophies, religion, medicine, agriculture, family structure, and remarkable strength make the definitive statement of self-reliance.

Yes Rasta is the best photography book on Rasta, an extraordinary photo documentary on people never seen before

I came across Yes Rasta recently in a Black bookstore while visiting Paris. As an African Jamaican I was immediately attracted to the book based on the title!

However, half way in the book I was overcome with immense disappointment. The images are mostly badly exposed and sadly 'déjà vu'.Yes Rasta lacks overall direction and many pages are blank which in my sincere opinion could have benefitted from text-so imperative here,as the photos fail to speak for themselves!

Anyone interested in InI livity in book form,I would advise,in conclusion,to save your money and purchase instead Dreads, published by Artisan...trust me,you won't be disappointed!

I visited Jamaica many times in the fifteen years following my first Negril holiday in 1977. I was in search of Rastafarianism and reggae music. Of the natural mystic blowing through the air.

My first morning in Negril I left my tourist hotel for a walk along the beach toward town. After a while of walking on the white sand and enjoying the glorious sunrise, I noticed two dread-locked men standing off to the side smoking a spliff and gazing out to sea. They were more like an apparition than flesh and blood but then they saw me staring. Smiles of incredible radiance slowly spread out upon their faces as they turned toward me and they nodded graciously. I felt their blessing like a wave of force across the beach. They had such tremendous presence, those two men. Such an aura of power.

Patrick Cariou's homage to Rastafarianism takes this mesmeric presence of the Rastaman as the focus for his deeply moving, sensationally well-executed portfolio of black and white photographs of Jamaica and of its Rasta Nation. The portraits of these men of all ages are among the best I have ever seen. Partly this results from the great technical skill Cariou brings to his work. But clearly the strength of this collection is in the way the subjects felt about their photographer. The way in which they responded to his lens emotionally.

There is one photograph of an elderly Rasta with matted locks down to the ground that is so remarkable. He stands for his portrait with his pancake-flattened dreadlock over one shoulder extending right to his feet in a sumptuous arc. His arms are extended at his sides and his stance suggests submission to fate, his attitude such a natural state of grace. But what makes this image so unforgettable is the communication you can feel between this man and his photographer. His willingness to open himself emotionally for his portrait. The unconditionality of his pose.

Aside from portraits of individuals, there are also numerous photographs of adult men with their children in this gorgeous collection. Of men working in their ganja fields, preparing ital for their meals, smoking the bounty of the marijuana harvest.

And there are photographs of Jamaica itself that capture just amazingly the dramatic mood of the mountains and of the thick, jungle-like vegetation that there abounds. And of the dwellings in which these people live and worship.

In the few inspired pages of text at the beginning of this book Perry Henzell captures the paradox of the Rasta people when he says that 'they projected the humility of the social outcast but bore the high stride of a visionary on the move..." Yes Rasta understands this essential paradox well and visually transmits a view of life informed by it with tremendous sensitivity and respect. I could not imagine a better result

this book is a long awaited contribution to the knowledge base of Rastafarian culture. This book is a work of art, compassion and livity. In recent times there has been academic writings of the world of rastafari. This knowledge helps to expand our ways of knowing and provides us with a history of a people that is often lost in other worldviews. The pictures that Patrick captures gives us a visual of strength and dignity of his subjects in their own settings. He and his co-author give praises to the struggle for equal rights and justice and honors the plight of those who have been oppressed. Patrick is very skillful with the lens of the camera and provides us with the powerful images of the faces of Rastafarians in the hills, the beach and on the road. A beautiful tabletop book to pass along to friends for the upcoming holidays.

I give thanks everytime for a remarkable book.
