Book Description

It's the spring of 2001, and Drew Hagel has spent the last decade watching things slip away--his first marriage, his real estate brokerage, his beloved daughter, Shannon, now a distant and mysterious high school senior. He is in danger of losing his place in the affluent suburb that his father once ruled. And then an unexpected friendship with Quint Manning, the manager of a secretive hedge fund, opens to Drew the prospect of vast, frictionless wealth. What Drew doesn't know is that Manning has problems of his own--his Midas touch is abandoning him; his restless wife, Carrie, is growing disillusioned with all that new money; and his hard-drinking son, Jamie, Shannon's classmate, is careering out of control.
As the fortunes of the two families become perilously interwoven, a terrible accident involving Shannon and Jamie gives Drew the leverage he needs to stay in the game. But his decision to speculate with human lives instead of money has unforeseen consequences and brings the novel to a devastating climax.
Human Capital is the highest achievement to date of a "powerful and perceptive" novelist (The Washington Post) and a realist for our times.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work - Compelling and captivating.......2007-02-04

Stephen Amidon's "Human Capital" is a compelling and provocative fictional story that depicts the human condition and the flaws that drive reckless behavior.

Greed. Emptiness. Desperation. Guilt. Momentarily lust. It's all in the storyline, which features a very credible and well-defined setting of Fairfield County, Connecticut.

The character development is remarkable and the connectivity of the four main characters to the plot is downright brilliant. Amidon tells the story in the third person multiple viewpoint, and captivates you with the characters' thought patterns and compulsions.

This is an excellent novel. You will feel like you know the characters. You will likely find that you may be able to relate them to people you know in your own life.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing fiction about greed and human flaws.......2005-05-14

Despite some technical shortfalls -- Amidon is no hedge fund expert -- this is one of the best books I've read among my two hundred plus Amazon reviews. Amidon provides detailed descriptions of people and place, creates credible tension between otherwise unattached characters, and draws up some interesting pairings, be they the ignored wife and the film critic, the daughter and the social drop out, or the grubby real estate agent and the regal hedge fund manager. These are people striving to get ahead, or to meet often unreasonable expectations, and it makes this an engaging tale of human woe based on wanting or asking for too much.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but hardly first rate.......2005-05-14

Having never read (or even heard of) the author previously, I had little idea what to expect. Whatever it was, it certainly wasn't something which "turns over the rock of NASDAQ affluence" as described on the cover.

Nevertheless, it is largely an excellent read. Even though it starts off very slowly (largely handicapped by the large amount of unnecessary detail & scene setting), it soon finds its way & becomes hard to put down. Amidon is to be commended for the way he weaves all the different lines of the plot together towards the end (almost justifying the large number of characters!).

My main gripe with the book is the plodding narrative used when the story is being told by Drew & Carrie. I appreciate what he is TRYING to do & deliberately is writing in this style, but it becomes rather tedious (especially when continually inserted inbetween crucial moments).

To sum up: it's good and worth reading, but it could have been so much better. If he could stifle his need to include pages & pages of irrelevant info on every single character/situation & just focus on a fewer more interesting ones (such as Shannon), this truly would be a first rate, sharply-written novel.

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous stuff.......2005-02-17

Beautifully balanced story-telling, smart observations, good, clean prose. Amidon takes you inside several different lives and does so effortlessly. Interesting from beginning to end. Buy this novel.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2005-02-08

Maybe I am just too sensitive, being the manager of a small hedge fund, but the scenes in which Drew, a small investor who does nor have a clue about the risks and rewards of investing in a hedge fund, is sure he will make 44% per year without any risk of loss, do not ring true. In addition, the focus on dividends is almost unheard of with respect to hedge funds. Finally, a big time hedge fund manager like Quint would not take in an individual investor with a mere $250,000 investment. He would be running a fund for "qualified" investors, which is not limited to 99 investors.

Other than the flawed presentation of hedge fund basics vis-a-vis small investors, the book is compelling reading. Nevertheless, the unbelievable premise that a small investor could ever invest in a mega hedge fund gnaws at me like a sitting on a thumbtack on a beautiful sofa.

Amidon should have let some hedge fund managers read through the manuscript first. Maybe he tried but couldn't get anyone to do it. Most of them are rather secretive, thinking (with some justification) they need to protect their trading strategies from competition.

Book Description

All of Waylander's instincts had screamed at him to spurn the contract from Kaem the cruel, the killer of nations. But he had ignored them. He had made his kill. And even as he went to collect his gold, he knew that he had been betrayed.
Now the Dark Brotherhood and the hounds of chaos were hunting him, even as Kaem's armies waged war on the Drenai lands, intent on killing every man, woman, and child. The Drenai soldiers were doomed to ultimate defeat, and chaos would soon reign.
Then a strange old man told Waylander that the only way to turn the tide of battle would be for Waylander himself to retrieve the legendary Armor of Bronze from its hiding place deep within a shadow-haunted land. He would be hunted. He was certain to fail. But he must try, the old man commanded--commanded in the name of his son, the king, who had been slain by an assassin...
Waylander was the most unlikely of heroes--for he was a traitor, the Slayer who had killed the king...

Waylander was an assassin, an occupation with a few hazards. Hired to kill the king, he did so. His employer decided not to pay the large amount of cash, so he killed someone close to him.

Now people are hunting Waylander, as are a shaman and sorcerous beasts.

Waylander does something unusual for him, he rescues a man, who is a Source priest, and because of Waylander, ends up founding the Thirty.

This book is set a long time before legend. There are two military leaders of the Drenai with power, Egel and Karnak, and to get rid of their opposition they must learn to work together and survive a siege.

Waylander is drawn into this battle, and his travelling and other skills are put to the test when he must travel to find the Armour of Bronze, to rally the armies. A lot depends on the legendary skills of Waylander the Slayer.

.

On the surface David Gemmell's stories are simple and straight forward. His heroes through skill, courage, and a personal code of honor, save the day. But, just barely scratch that surface, and you see where Gemmell's magic lies. In the struggle of good vs. evil, Gemmell shines in the in-between shades-of-grey. He reads like a Western. Dark heroes with pasts who are skilled at violence, but its that skill that is necessary for survival of the good-guys.

In Waylander, The fate of a Drenai rests on the shoulders of an assassin. It's Gemmell at his best.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Gemmell.......2006-11-28

Waylander is typical Gemmell. A great warrior - Waylander - with a mysterious and angry past is pitted against the hoard. This time the Nadir, magical and dark priests, and nether-beasts stalk Waylander in his quest to recover mystical armor that has been hidden until the chosen one comes for it. Even his friends are tempted by the bounty on his head. Waylander must hurry, however, as the clock is ticking for his brethren being sieged in their mountain stronghold. Murder, mystery and mayhem follow Waylander, for it is well known that he is the man who killed the king, and was once deadliest man in the land... But now he is getting older...

A great story and a crucial lead up to the Legend of Deathwalker - the finest of all Gemmell books.

4 out of 5 stars Fourth Book in the Series.......2006-11-23

Sadly David Gemmell died a short while ago and I find it difficult to review a book that I first read 20 years ago when David was very much alive and only just beginning his craft as a writer of fantasy novels. Admittedly his first offering were acceptable but not great, but he honed his skills and grew to be one of the greatest fantasy writers ever. If you have not read any of his books then now is the time to start, I am sure you will not be disappointed. The only sad thing is that David will not be around to write new books that would bring even more pleasure to his multitude of fans.

The Drenai King is dead, murdered by an assassin. Enemy troops are converging on the lands of the Drenai. Their orders are simple, kill anyone who stands in their way, be it man, woman or child. There is one source of hope for the Drenai, Waylander must travel to the lands of the Nadir, to find the legendary Armour of Bronze. If he is successful there is hope for the Drenai. But can he be trusted? After all he is the man who killed the King. The journey is fraught with danger and Waylander is stalked by shape shifters. Men who act like beats and beast that walk like a man . . .

Once I read "Hero in the Shadows" I had to go back and read the other "Waylander" tales. A strong plot and even stronger characters in a genre I love. No body crosses "Waylander" twice. A true anti-hero in the "man with no name" family

The second Waylander book is in reality a little more about his adopted daughter Miriel.

Karnak and others decide to dispose of Waylander the Slayer, and send assassins and men to kill him. A mistake, as he has trained his daughter well, and two other warriors end up fighting with him.

Thrown into the mix are a Nadir shaman and his plans for the coming of the Uniter of the tribes.

Everyone must also worry about the Dark Brotherhood.

In Hero in the Shadows, Waylander, the assassin hero of some of Gemmell's earlier books, is now a middle-aged man looking for peace in a world that will, for the most part, let him alone. The crimes of his past come back to haunt him, as he finds himself responsible for a young prince whose grandfather he murdered, and as creatures of doomed legend come back to rule the world with blood and horror. An aging paladin, a loud-mouthed braggart whom a magic sword has chosen, and a kitchen girl who is unusually handy with her knives become his allies, along with a priestess who is not telling all she knows, or all she is.

Gemmell is one of the best writers of fantasy adventure--this new book is attractively gloomy in its atmosphere and has a pervading sense of the ironic. The action sequences are powerful and well visualized; Gemmell always knows how a particular sort of fight would feel. And there are no simple morals here--most of the characters, heroic or villainous, exist in the gray hinterland between dark and light, where evil acts are often performed in sorrow and good actions often have mixed motives behind them. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

For years, David Gemmell has been the best kept secret in fantasy fiction on this side of the Atlantic. A perennial London Times bestselling author in his native England, Gemmell combines fast-paced, powerful storytelling with vivid, unforgettable characters; he pits world-weary heroes challenged in profound new ways against bloodthirsty foes as dark as night. Now Gemmell returns to the savage lands of his acclaimed Drenai saga in an action-packed tale of malevolent ancient sorceries reborn--and the brave men and women who dare to stand against them.

THE HERO IN THE SHADOWS

The ruined city of Kuan Hador reeks of dark mystery. Shunned by brigands and merchants alike, it is home to fearsome wild things and legends that freeze the blood--tales that speak of a time thousands of years past, when Kuan Hador was the capital of a vast empire ruled by evil sorcerers. These mages were able to meld beasts and men into unholy Joinings--foot soldiers of a ruthless demonic army. When the forces of men finally did prevail, the sorcerers and their half-human slaves escaped through a magical doorway . . . only to find themselves trapped in another world. The doorway sealed behind them, locked with an enchantment too powerful to break. Or so the legends say.

But at the heart of every legend lies a glimmer of truth, and truth can kill. Especially when it comes in the form of slavering white beasts who possess an insatiable appetite for death and destruction. Millennia have passed, and the spell of imprisonment has begun to fade. The sorcerers and their foul minions will soon be free to wreak a horrible vengeance against all that lives.

This time, no army waits to oppose them--only a rag-tag group of unlikely heroes: Kysumu, the rajnee swordsman; Yu Yu Liang, a humble ditch digger with dreams of glory; Taliana, a warrior woman as fierce as she is beautiful. Leading them is the mysterious Gray Man, an enigmatic figure hated and envied for his fabulous wealth. A man with a blood-drenched past, who has killed for principle and for payment. A man of destiny known throughout the lands of the Drenai as Waylander the Slayer.

Now, to defeat a timeless evil, an ancient riddle must be solved . . . and Waylander, the prince of assassins, must kill a man who cannot die.

Waylander is getting on the elderly side, and is a retiring businessman known as Daykeyras or the Grey Man. He has some wealth and influence, and a large household.

Action calls when he rescues a young woman, whom he takes into his household, and ends up training to be a warrior.

When the joining priestess Ustarte seeks his help, he is drawn into a final battle against dark sorcery to prevent a cataclysm.

Being an absolute fantasy-fan, I have read a lot of fantasy-books from different authors such as R.Jordan (wheel of time),G.R.R. Martin (song of ice and fire),R.Feist,T. Goodkind, etc.
For me personally there is no-one better then D. Gemmell, he has ( well he had, since he died a few weeks ago) an incredible gift to create characters, which you want to identify yourself with, which never are just "bad guys" or "good guys", but show a complexicity, which makes them very believable.
The best books are ,for me personally, the 3 volumes of Waylander, this one being the best of them.
Also excellent are the latest books of Troy.
Really a shame , that Gemmell had to die so young, my condolences to his family!

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic tale from Mr. Gemmell.......2007-07-10

Hero in the Shadow is the next book in the Drenai Saga, I believe it is book 9 in the series. For people who have little to no idea who David Gemmell is, you are in for a treat as you embark on this incredible journey through his plethora of novels. The first book in this saga is simply titled Legend (Drenai Tales, Book 1). It's a great read and one that starts a grand adventure. If you have not read Waylander (Drenai Tales, Book 4) and In the Realm of the Wolf (Drenai Tales, Book 5) by Gemmell you really need to at least read those two before reading this one. It will add much more depth to the main character and the demons he carries with him.

This novel actually has many plot layers to it. The main plot involves attempting to stop an invasion by demons in the land. This takes on many interesting turns and provides a brief history lesson to some things that have been mentioned in earlier books. Some of the sub-plots involve very emotional pieces such as Waylander's personal demons, Chardyn doubting his belief in the Source, Ustarte wanting to prevent deeds from happening, and a few more I won't mention due to being possibly spoilers. I think it is safe to say that no matter what type of fantasy books you enjoy there will be something in this novel for everyone. There are large scale battles, there are political underpinnings, there is the human element of striving for goals, there is revenge and retribution, but most importantly the story itself is well written and highly entertaining.

Mr. Gemmell has a knack for writing very engaging characters. Every character seems to be the most important character in the novel when they are on the page. Main characters such as Waylander and Eldicar all the way to minor characters such as Matze Chai and Lalitia. Gemmell imbues each of these characters with very real elements that allow the reader to love or hate them at the reader's discretion. Also, the character development in this novel is second to none. From where Walyander starts in the novel to where he ends up is simply fantastic. The journey the priest Chardyn undertakes in his search for believing in the Source is very good as well. Rarely in fantasy books is an author able to capture both great characters and a great plot. Mr. Gemmell has done just that in this novel.

When picking up a Gemmell book it is much like putting on a pair of old shoes, it's comfortable and you know just what to expect. While Mr. Gemmell may not write epic plots like G.R.R. Martin his novels are certainly worth while. His prose allows for an ease of reading. He doesn't use the flowery language one can expect from, say Tolkien. His books are much like he was in life, to the point and honest. If you are a fan of the fantasy genre and have not yet read a Gemmell book you are doing yourself a tremendous disservice. Take a chance and pick up Legend today and maybe you will continue on in this saga as I have. I will surely recommend these books to many fantasy fans.

5 out of 5 stars Another Fantasy Classic.......2007-03-07

I've just finished listening to the audio version and it's just as good as when I read the book. Gemmell's world and characters feel real, as if you look hard enough there are history scrolls that will verify the existence of Drenai. Hero in the Shadows gives us the final chapter of Waylander, a hero who's past includes assassinating a good king for money to finance his personal revenge of the men who murdered his wife and children. How more complex of character can you get then that?

On one level the story is about Waylander, having taken on a new name, tries to live the life of a wealthy merchant. He builds a utopia in his huge palace for learning and culture. Beginning with the opening rescue, followed by the pending invasion of an evil race expelled from the world 3K years before, violence finds Waylander and drags him back into what he does very well: Dealing death. Magic, demons, religion, good citizens, and men with frozen hearts builds the story to its final climax. As with all Gemmell stories expect that evil men may commit acts of great horror and generous sacrifice, heroes come up short or suffer terrible losses, and common people step up to be heroic.

If this is your first Waylander book, STOP, first read "Waylander" followed by "In the Realm of the Wolf." Hero in the Shadows is the final in the Waylander trilogy. Although you could read this and get a full story, but much historical context and texture will be lost. Reading this Gemmell story, you won't be disappointed. Unless you're like me and have read all his work then you have only to reread these great works. Of course, Gemmell would want it that way!

5 out of 5 stars hero in the shadows.......2006-08-28

as an avid fantasy reader, i have to admit that i read my books quietly, mostly cracking a smile at a good twist of a plot. Enter mr gemmell and i catch myself -several times- cheering aloud while reading. i only surrender his book(s) under
heavy eyelid pressure, very late at night.
let's talk about the actual book; while Tolkien puts immense talent into the creation of unforgettable places like Valinor, the pits of Thangorodrim or the mines of Moria,Gemmell puts the same immense output, to create unforgettable characters, like
Dakeyras (waylander) and Eldicar Manushan. This goes for all of Gemmell's other books, spanning haunting characters like the macedonian stratego Parmenion, the swordsman Skilgannon or the rigante giant Jaim Grymauch. The well never dries. every book comes with its array of awesomely described characters that it's agony to see some of them killed and i can promise you the loud cheering whenever they narrowly escape their predicament.
what's even better is the uniform way in which gemmell treats his characters:the bad ones get the same depth of personality as the good ones, you end up uncertain where lies your preferences in the middle of the book. so you'll decide
to go beyond both sides (like nietzsche would want us to), admiring them both for their boldness, courage, decisions and blunders.
the awesome reality and vividness of the characters is solidly encased into a context of magical realism where the characters can travel through astral planes and parallel worlds and encounter ancient magics that could help or destroy. you'll never know.
when the story will physically end and you close the book, you can be sure your mind will keep swarming for months -and possibly for good- with the names and deeds of great individuals with whom you shared an intense experience of life, thanks to that wizard of an author, david gemmell.

The 1980s: a world of Cold War tensions, Reaganomics, Madonna and MTV. In the midst of this raucous setting, a team of modern-day, tank-driving Arthurian knights lock and load against a terrorist organization determined to take over the world—as well as rip apart our moral fabric with pyramid sales schemes and mind-numbing sitcoms.

Through every triumph and tragedy, each war wound and victory purchased with patriotic blood, Now You Know dissects the ways in which G.I. Joe—America's elite fighting force—clashed with the forces of darkness… not to mention communists, ninjas and giant vegetables.

Now You Know features: Story summaries, reviews, top ten lists and a heap of humorous categories on more than 100 G.I. Joe TV episodes. Full coverage of all G.I. Joe comic series -- past and present! Complete toy price guide and fact-filled appendices.

4 out of 5 stars Need the artwork to make it a masterpiece........2007-02-11

Everthing from A to Z was included in this unauthorized guide to this 80's generation hit. Having said that, it would have been nice to include a special section showing all the comic book covers for the series. The artwork included would have made this guide a complete masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining nostalgia trip........2005-02-05

What a fun book! Anyone who grew up during the salad days of the 1980's G.I. Joe cartoon and comics series will appreciate this exhaustive compendium of history, trivia, and minutia. Either as a nostalgia trip or as a means to fill in any missing holes from your comic or cartoon collection, this book will surely please any die-hard Joe fan. The author not only has a firm, loving knowledge of Joe lore, but with sections dedicated to goofs and implausibilities also provides matter with tongue firmly planted in cheek. The book chronicles the soaring highs and frustrating lows of the entire Hasbro-related Joe universe. Action figure collectors beware: this book has very little to offer in the way of figure collecting or appraisal. Also (most likely due to copyright issues) the only image(s) you will see are on the cover of the book. I had to bump down the book a star for lack of images relating to either the cartoon or comics--which in my humble opinion would have made the offering perfect. Definitely worth the price of admission....

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Encyclopedia of the World of GI Joe.......2004-10-03

If you are a huge GI Joe fan (like myself), then this book is a must-have! The book outlines everything you ever wanted to know about the world of GI Joe cartoons & comics (including the first few comics currently written by Devil's Due Publishing). The author goes into great detail about analyzing each cartoon episode, outlining storylines including mistakes within the storylines and animation.

If you never read the original Marvel comic series, the author does an excellent job of summarizing the entire comic book line from beginning to end.

This book is an excellent book and is absolutely bargain priced.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute Textbook of GI Joe and COBRA.......2004-02-24

If there were college courses dedicated solely to the subject of GI Joe and COBRA, this would be the one stop textbook on the subject and Lars Pearson would have the Doctorate in Joeology. If old school GI Joe was your cold war kid religion, then this is it's bible. If you just jumped on the new school Image bandwagon, read about the rich mythology you missed. Bless you Larry Hama for never dumbing down the comic (until it jumped the shark with the toyline, circa. Cobra-laaaa, but that wasn't your fault.) and allowing even the preteenage readers a chance to begin to understand news and the world. Thank you to the cartoon creators for the surreal clash between childish fantasy and hard cold war reality. Thank you, Lars Pearson, for writing this excellent guidebook, as a fan, for fans.

                4 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey.......2006-04-11

This book is a very good survey of the breadth of issues in Christian Ethics and the Christian moral life, with insight into the possible responses that many Christian thinkers have given to those issues. The book includes conservative and liberal views, and gives a good try at objective survey of these views using the thoughts and theories of respected Christian scholars. A trusted source and trusted publisher.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Christian ethics.......2003-12-29

By and large, the essays in this volume are well-researched, well-written, and tightly argued. The book is divided into three sections: a preliminary one that interprets the relationship between faith, scripture, and ethics; a middle one that explores various traditions in Christian ethics; and a final one that offers treatments of specific moral issues.

The first part is the most satisfying of the three. Rowan Williams' lead essay, "Making Moral Decisions," masterfully argues that Christians make moral decisions pretty much the same as everyone else, except (and this is a big "except") for the fact that the decisions are made within the context of a community of faith and reflect that community's worldview. This means that the Christian should also seek to exemplify divine holiness in her moral decisions, and that she should take seriously disagreements in the community that also strive for such an exemplification. The other essays in the first section take their cue from Williams' approach, carefully examining whether scripture is a set of definitive moral guidelines or whether it instead is an interpretive tool that invites contemporary readers to examine the issues confronting them in light of the Gospel message. The latter approach is endorsed.

The middle section discusses several traditions including natural law ethics and virtue ethics, but for my money Lisa Sowle Cahill's essay on gender and Tim Gorringe's on liberation are the most interesting. They're also the most unsatisfying, because space constraints prevent Cahill and Gorringe from providing more than sketchy overviews.

The third section is the most uneven part of the book. R. John Elford offers a rather uncritical endorsement of just war theory, thankfully offset by Robin Gill's reasoned but passionate argument that the arms trade is unacceptable from a Christian moral perspective. Max Stackhouse's essay is a strangely heavy-handed endorsement of neoliberal capitalism, but is balanced to some extent by Duncan Forrester's more reflective essay on social justice and welfare. Michael Northcott's essay on ecology is quite good, but Don Browning's on world family trends is overblown--one of his basic contentions is the (surely eurocentric) claim that father-less families are devastating in their consequences--and James Childress' on biomedical issues is a rather ho-hum rehash of standard issues revolving around abortion, euthanasia, and reproduction.

One interesting note: the influence of Stanley Hauerwas is evident throughout the essays in this volume. There are more references to him than to any other Christian ethicist-- including Thomas Aquinas, Augustine, Karl Barth, Martin Luther, and St. Paul!
