Jonathan "SCREAMING BOY" Bell, demanded you read this book in his infamous short-lived televangelist show. Screaming and hollering, at the top of his lungs (literally). DRESSED TO KILL, is THE 'Full armour of God', of books to read. Jonathan Bell (whom is currently serving time for sexual molestation charges) highly recommends, this book. If you desire to watch the infamous Dallas Cable Access shows where Mr. Bell goes through a myriad of psychotic mental breakdowns (on the air), you can find it at your finer obscure video rental stores. Look for "THE INCREDIBLE SCREAMING BOY" Bucko!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful DeLint adventure.......2007-09-02

I have many books by Charles DeLint - this one is longer than most but enjoyable all the way through. As with all his books, there is action and adventure, but also psychology - insight into the characters thoughts and mind. Plus of course a good dollop of the spiritual and magical. One of few hard covers that has survived my last house move (when I had to halve my library) and I am unlikely to ever part with it.

4 out of 5 stars "If Jilly ever got access to fairyland...".......2007-06-22

A friend once remarked that it was a fairly bad idea to read too many Charles de Lint books in a short period of time. This is true. However, it had been quite a while since my last book by de Lint, so I generally enjoyed The Onion Girl.

It is not my favorite book by de Lint, despite the general enjoyment factor. Some of the book was just a little too much of the same old same old urban fae routine. I think that this is a general issue with the Newford books and it goes to the point of not reading too many de Lint books in a short period of time.

In contrast, other elements of the book felt a little too far out of his comfort zone. Vacchs does the "children of the secret" much more believably than The Onion Girl ever manages. It may be that hard boiled detective novels are simply a better vehicle for this kind of subject matter. For me, the best de Lint characters are more worn down by life than really wounded like Jilly and Raylene. Not because the wounded aren't interesting, but because these particular characters do not ring quite as true as de Lint characters often can.

Jilly in particular lacks spark. It is difficult to read either how she engages so well with some people or how she is unable to engage with others. Raylene is ultimately quite a bit more complex, and I generally found her story to be the most compelling.

All in all, I am not sorry that I read The Onion Girl. For people who like de Lint already, it should be a good (if not great) entry in the Newford group. Enjoyable, even if nothing really special. If you do not have a strong stomach for urban fae, this will probably not be your cup of tea. Three-and-a-half stars.

4 out of 5 stars Can De Lint truly do wrong?.......2007-04-03

Let me just start by saying that I LOVE this author; he is one of very few that I read simply because he wrote it.
Saying that, although this is not my absolute favorite book of his I have ever read, it is one that I will recommend to every one who likes De Lint.
This book is entirely about Jilly who has to be one of the most likable characters ever created. Almost from the first page you are thrust into a heart breaking story that even threw it's moments of predictability is extremely entertaining none the less.
Even the best books aren't with out their problems;
The story jumps through various times through history which can get very confusing if you aren't paying attention and you could easily find yourself going back to the beginning of the chapter to find out who you are talking to and what year it is.
And I don't like the timing in the book, there are places where I don't want to wait two or three chapters to find out what happens and I had a really hard time not skipping ahead and missing some of the book.

Please don't let me stop you from buying it, this book really was wonderful, he has a way of telling stories that really makes you want to be a part of them. I promise you, this book is worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Author.......2006-11-02

Charles De Lint makes me believe his stories are real. He's that amazing of a writer.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy.......2006-02-25

Some people have written that they found this story sad. That could be said about a lot of Charles de Lint books, because they are always about struggle. No one writes personal struggle better. Although there is an underlying story of the characters trying to help keep magic or the Otherworld alive, the characters are always struggling to grow and keep parts of themselves alive. I delayed buying this book because of a reviewer who said they had been excited about learning Jilly's background but depressed and disappointed by the book. Yes, the story is hard. But life is hard. Maybe one of the reasons I relate to Charles de Lint so well is that he writes truthfully about the hard parts. I've read this book twice already and I'll read it many more times. And in response to the previous reviewer, I liked both Jilly and Raylene. Maybe later stories will tell us more about Raylene.

              Book Description

A laboratory for competing visions of modernity, the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) continues to haunt the imagination of the twentieth century. Its political and cultural lessons retain uncanny relevance for all who seek to understand the tensions and possibilities of our age. The Weimar Republic Sourcebook represents the most comprehensive documentation of Weimar culture, history, and politics assembled in any language. It invites a wide community of readers to discover the richness and complexity of the turbulent years in Germany before Hitler's rise to power.
Drawing from such primary sources as magazines, newspapers, manifestoes, and official documents (many unknown even to specialists and most never before available in English), this book challenges the traditional boundaries between politics, culture, and social life. Its thirty chapters explore Germany's complex relationship to democracy, ideologies of "reactionary modernism," the rise of the "New Woman," Bauhaus architecture, the impact of mass media, the literary life, the tradition of cabaret and urban entertainment, and the situation of Jews, intellectuals, and workers before and during the emergence of fascism.
While devoting much attention to the Republic's varied artistic and intellectual achievements (the Frankfurt School, political theater, twelve-tone music, cultural criticism, photomontage, and urban planning), the book is unique for its inclusion of many lesser-known materials on popular culture, consumerism, body culture, drugs, criminality, and sexuality; it also contains a timetable of major political events, an extensive bibliography, and capsule biographies. This will be a major resource and reference work for students and scholars in history; art; architecture; literature; social and political thought; and cultural, film, German, and women's studies.

              Book Description

The Nazi Germany Sourcebook is an exciting new collection of documents on the origins, rise, course and consequences of National Socialism, the Third Reich, the Second World War, and the Holocaust. Packed full of both official and private papers from the perspectives of perpetrators and victims, these sources offer a revealing insight into why Nazism came into being, its extraordinary popularity in the 1930s, how it affected the lives of people, and what it means to us today.
This carefully edited series of 148 documents, drawn from 1850 to 2000, covers the pre-history and aftermath of Nazism. Sources include legislative and diplomatic records, minutes of meetings, speeches and manifestoes, personal diaries and eyewitness accounts. Each document is preceded by a brief critical analysis that also provides the historical context in which it was written.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for serious students of Nazi Germany.......2003-09-04

This book is long overdue for students of Nazi Germany that have not yet mastered the German language. Included in this book are chapter after chapter of important primary documents from the late 19th century and World War I to the Historians Debate concerning Nazism in the late 20th century.
Stackelberg includes a very readable introduction to each chapter that puts the documents in that chapter in their historical perspective. Most documents are ordered chronologically, however a few are thematically ordered because they're best viewed in that context.
This isn't a book of just dry Nazi government documents either, it includes works from others that were influential in the development of the Nazi ideology, such as Wagner.
In contrast to other books, such as the series by Nokes and Pridham, this book also includes an index, which prevents scholars from having to search through the entire book to find a document on a particular subject.
This book should be read by anyone that has a serious interest in Nazi Germany.

                    Book Description

The recent reunification of Germany has given rise to heated debate, inspiring new hopes and renewing old fears. But how many understand the critical post-war events which set the stage for today's events?

Germany 1945-49: A Sourcebook examines the crucial post-war period when, as today, the German people were ready to break with the past and reassess what it means to be German. Malzahn uses numerous documents from the immediate post-war years to elucidate the political and social currents of the time and to illustrate how the Nazi state was dismantled and refashioned into two separate countries. The documents, many of which were previously unavailable in English, reflect life at all levels from politics to fashion, presenting the viewpoints of both the Allied forces and the Germans. Unprecedented in English, this comprehensively annotated and illustrated work shows the complex reality of post-war Germany, bringing that critical period alive once again.

                            Book Description

An important goal in the study of Kabbalah is to use ones knowledge to influence ones destiny. Firstly, one has to realize what life is, what its meaning is, why it is given to us, where it begins, and where it ends.

For all those people like me who have the question "What is the meaning of my life", comes the answer from the words of Rav Michael Laitman. This book has truly inspired me and attraced me to the wisdom of kabbalah, to understand kabbalah the science, and finally leaves me with a yearning to find more.

The book makes connections between our daily situations and their roots in kabbalah, helping me to relate to the science in a very personal way.

I encourage all of you to read this book and I can say that the author reaches out to the reader in a true way !!

Having been intrigued by studies of the Kabbalah, and enjoying such enlightening works such as POWER OF KABBALAH and A WISH CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE, I wanted to continue my research into this topic by reading Laitman's well-reviewed "Guide" to the Kabbalah.

While the jacket states that the book provides the reader with "a solid foundation for understanding" and "the content is designed to allow individuals all over the world to begin traversing..." I found this book not much of a "guide" at all.

The book's stark, bleak tone tirelessly outlines the structure of the Kabbalah, provides study guides and wisdom, moves onto droning historical commentary, then proceeds to lapse into a language so severely technical and esoteric, perhaps only rabbis with the highest level of scholarly discourse on this subject can appreciate the book's ideas and enjoy them for what they're worth. The book sells itself as a guide, but I felt as if I was a student just out of basic math, plunged into seminars on astro physics and superstring and expected to comprehend.

Joylessly written, the book's halting pedantic tone warns readers to ignore all other writings on this topic but its own (and maybe a few other master works), but offers no passion, and no particularly unique insights. It gets caught up in redundancies and facts. The book arrogantly acknowledges its own technicalities, but urges readers to keep going, obnoxiously assuring readers that they may not comprehend all that they read, but that it doesn't matter. What a turn off.

What I enjoyed so much about other books I read on this subject, was the clever stylistic ways the writers presented their material: well-researched, passionate, and unafraid of humor. They took risks in their writing, genuinely trying to connect to an audience. The whole point of the Kabbalah is that it be made accessible to the masses; that all who wish should be granted its wisdom and enlightenment. The quickest way to view the Kabbalah as an elitist amalgamation of diluted nonsense is to pick up this dusty old textbook.

Rav Laitman is arguably the most relevant Kabbalist of our time, a student of Baruch Ashlag, the son of Rav Yehuda Ashlag, who everyone agrees was the greatest Kabbalist of the 20th century. This book gets very technical in certain areas, but repeatedly reminds the reader that s/he need not instantly understand all of the information intellectually. He stresses that it is more important to make the effort to read the material and be open to learning in your heart rather than your head.

There's a tremendous amount of a very wise and searching approach
to Kabbalah compressed in this book. If you somehow only glanced at
the title and said, "Oh, another title in kabbalah ......" and passed on by, you will have missed an opportunity to connect not
only with knowledge about wisdom, however you think of it, but with the deeper parts of yourself -- your soul, your potentials.
Rabbi Laitman opens up the issue of Kabbalah as a science,
which requires study and honesty with one's self,-- and a wilingness to "think outside of the box".
Kabbalah as taught here in a way asks you
to remain engaged in your surroundings or do what's required in this very physical world. It
is not a book that focusses on any kind of technique -- the
study is to help one understand and increase one's desire for
Greater Reality, desire for what is needed to move all of humanity towards its ultimate goal and fulfillment. I have found
this book both user-friednly, clear, but with a challenge to
heart and mind that invigorates. I highly recommend it!
