Book Description

Nonny Frett understands the meaning of the phrase in between a rock and a hard place better than any woman alive. Shes got two mothers, one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy. Shes got two men: a husband whos easing out the back door; and a best friend, whos laying siege to her heart in her front yard. And she has two families: the Fretts, who stole her and raised her right; and the Crabtrees, who lost her and wont forget how they were done wrong. Now, in Between, Georgia, population 90, a feud that began the night Nonny was born is escalating, and a random act of violence is about to ignite a stash of family secrets. Ironically, it might be just what the town needs....if only Nonny werent stuck in between.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jackson has a masterful touch!.......2007-10-08

There are lots of writers and lots of storytellers, but very few authors who can do both as beautifully as Joshilyn Jackson. With characters so real and vulnerable and with a story that twists and turns, she uses her crystal clear prose to take her readers on a heartfelt journey they'll never forget. Between, Georgia portrays the complexities of families and looks at how we feud and how we love and all in the most unexpected ways. I'll be anxiously awaiting Jackson's next book--this is one writer and storyteller who never fails to deliver gem after gem!

1 out of 5 stars Sappy and predictable.......2007-10-08

If you enjoy sappy soap operas with predictable endings, you may enjoy this book. If not, don't waste your time.

5 out of 5 stars Jackson does it again.......2007-07-27

For those who read Gods in Alabama and put it down with a heavy sigh, convinced there would be no topping that tale and the bar was set impossibly high, fret not. Between, Georgia takes us back into Jackson's south: Lush descriptions, larger-than-life yet utterly human and endearing characters, and enough suspense to keep you reading well past bedtime. A stupendous first novel is sometimes followed by a so-so second book, and I was delighted to see Between was perhaps even more masterful than Jackson's previous work.

Take it to the beach; buy it for your friends; just don't give away your copy -- you're going to want to read it again.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down..........2007-07-26

Joshilyn Jackson became one of my very favorite writers with her debut, GODS IN ALABAMA, and her second novel, BETWEEN, GEORGIA, exceeded my high expectations. She's my favorite kind of writer: funny and dark, violent and sweet--often within the very same sentence. She has a pitch-perfect ear for dialogue and for making even the most flawed characters sympathetic and real. This is a great, fast-paced, intelligent book, and I can't wait for her next!

1 out of 5 stars Nobody wins -- especially the reader -- in dreadful, stereotype-laden families' feud failure .......2007-07-26

Joshilyn Jackson trots out a hackneyed story-line, unbelievable characters and an implausible sequence of events in her lamentably poor "Between, Georgia." Her protagonist, Nonny Frett, suffers every conceivable stress a young woman could endure. She is the biological daughter of the Crabtrees, an assemblage of backwoods yokels who make the in-bred country folk of the film "Deliverance" look like Nobel Prize winners. Adopted under providential and extra-legal circumstances by the blind and deaf Stacia Frett, Nonny cannot extricate herself from the cauldron of suspicion and dislike her two families feel for each other.

As if this were not trouble enough, Nonny's decaying marriage features a husband who doesn't bother to inform Nonny that he has contracted syphilis from one of the many women he has bedded. Naturally, our first introduction to this man whom she intends to divorce occurs during a steamy session of love making between the estranged couple. Pining away for Nonny is the novel's heartthrob, Henry, a Crabtree genetic anomaly, given his interest in books, ability to speak in complete sentences and his penchant for wearing clean clothes. Nonny must also balance the demands of her demented biological grandmother Ona and her overly-protective, vengeful aunt Bernese, the polar matriarchs of the conflict.

I'm surmising that those who enjoy this half-baked, utterly predictable novel relish Hatfield and McCoy movies, complete with phony violence and pretend revenge. Rural Southerners take a beating in the author's ham-fisted stereotyping of them. When the Crabtrees throw a dinner party, you just know that one of the invited guests will end up sleeping on the couch with his foot resting in the velvet potatoes. If this is your idea of fun, Joshilyn Jackson will not disappoint. She is adept enough to include the shopworn, heartwarming characterization of Nonny's mother as an inspired artist, struggling against incipient blindness to create something of lasting legacy. This pathetic tugging of the heartstrings merely manipulates emotions. There never will be an ultimate showdown between the two families, nor should readers expect anything but the most tacky, saccharine conclusion. Jackson is an absolute devotee of the "Aw Shucks" and "Gee Whiz" school of thought.

There isn't an authentic scene or character in "Between, Georgia." Full of false feelings, artificial conflict and pernicious stereotyping, this novel fails in its attempt to connect with its readers. There is no "rock and a hard place" for author Jackson. You'll find "Between" somewhere south of bad and barely north of awful.

    Book Description

Co A, 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. One of the most detailed reviews of America's Civil War in its western field. A painful, shocking expose of the disastrous treatment of America's disabled Civil War veterans... little known in those years...completely unremembered in our day. Hour by hour...heroism and brilliant strategy in the most hard hitting, combative, small scale raid of America's Civil War. Rank and file riflemen...friends and neighbors from one Indiana county...living, fighting, dying in America's bloodiest of all wars. "The Boys From Lake County" is likely one-of-kind in America's Civil War history...at least in the last hundred years. The book names all of the 100 men who originally enlisted in Co A, 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It details their age at enlistment, their height, complexion, color of hair, color of eyes, where they were born, where they resided in Lake County, civilian occupation, and what happened to them during the War. For a few it reveals some details of their lives after the War. For one, the book lists a great many events during his entire lifetime. As a matter of course, "The Boys From Lake County" is also a relatively complete history of their 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

3 out of 5 stars the history of Georgia football.......2002-11-14

This book can help you to figure out not only when Georgia Football began but how. It explains much on the early years of the football program and it's progressions throughout the years. It presents the ups and downs of the program in good order. The book is a little out of date because it dosen't go all the way to present day. Allthough this book is on Georgia it isn't all that good of a book. I mean it presents the history in good order but it can be on the sleepy side in some parts.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dark by name, dark by nature........2007-09-13

Malus Darkblade is the latest in a line of "Dark elf" type heroes that can be tracked back to Elric via Drizzt Do'Urden, but he has a twist. Unlike his progenitors who rise above their heritage to show some redeeming features, a touch of humanity, Malus is a complete died in the wool swine of the first order, he's an incestuous, homicidal, sadist who'd like nothing more than to flay you alive, simply for his own amusement. His only redeeming feature is his courage and resilience in the face of his equally appalling family and their attempts to destroy him. Yet ghastly as he is, in the world he inhabits you almost find yourself rooting for him as his opponents are even worse.
Dan Abnet writes fairly prolifically in the Warhammer format, yet the choice of scenarios available to him give him sufficient options to be original within its confines. Malus gives him the chance to exercise his fantasy muscles rather than the Sci Fi of Eisenhorn and his creation is dark, devious and deadly. Well worth checking out.

                4 out of 5 stars Darkblade's adventure.......2007-02-02

Highborn Lord Malus Darkblade, an especially brutal dark elf, returns on a raiding party succesful, until someone unleashes a trap and kills all his slaves (i.e. profits). Broke and hunted for his debts, Malus takes a few of his retainers (or slave/bodyguards) and goes into the wild Chaoes Wastelands in search of a legendary city with untold treasures that will set him up for life and allow him revenge against his brothers and sisters that are trying to kill him. Along the way he runs into the half human beastmen that inhabit the wild frontier, makes (and brakes) several ties and deals to ensure his survival. But it is the twist ending that makes this book really intrieging. Maybe ending is not the best way to describe the end of the book, since I found out this is actually the first of a triligy (and a longer running series featuring Malus). This is dark fantasy at it's most brutal, as I am sure any 'Warhammer' fan already knows. The characters are all hedonists who only care about themselves, and only look out for others as a way of self reservation. Malus is cold, ruthless, not above lying, stealing, and out right murder to achive his duboius ends. This is one of those books where there are the bad guys and then there are the worst guys. The violence is at a high, almost carciture level, think of it along the smae lines of the "Evil Dead' movies, so over the top it stops being gross after awhile. The end is interesting, and I can't wait to see how Malus gets out of the situation he is in. If there is a problem it is that the book is so relentlessly grim with no decent people to root for, though there is a certain rouge charm to Malus, and you do root for him to triumph. I like this book, and can't wait to get into the next one.

                2 out of 5 stars Too Random...IMHO.......2006-11-20

Alright, so I picked up this book with a recommendation from a relative of mine. I looked at these reviews and was pretty excited! It sounded like it would be a great book...In short, it was extremely random, there was no character development (even for the title character) and I felt that the writing wasn't too great either.
One thing that really got on my nerves was the overuse of the title "retainer". Malus was always surrounded by them and in battle scenes the word was useless. You never know what retainer he is referring to. Not that you get to know any but three by their names, And even then they aren't referred to by them that often. Seriously, I really could have gotten into the characters of Dalvar and Lhunara, but there is no attempt to develop them. I also got tired of the term "Cold One", the "named" characters should have at least had "named" mounts.
Secondly, where in the world is the story line? It's like, " go find power"..queue up the many random uninteresting battles (where you only get to know what Malus is doing). I thought the battle scenes were extremely bland. The enemies were underdeveloped and random. Not to mention that you had no sense of layout. It was just chaos, but maybe thats what the author was going for.
Lastly, the one thing that kept me reading, until the rediculous battle with the "glutinous scythe-armed monsters" was that it still might be fun since Ol' Malus is supposed to be such an evil fellow! He is the biggest wimp! There were no qualities that made me like him OR hate him. I had more emotion towards the under developed supporting characters. It wasn't enough to keep me going.
All in all I was completely disappointed by this book. I was excited from the hype of it all, and when I was reading the beginning couple of chapters I saw great potential for the characters, and then it all completely vanished. Malus is probably the most boring character I've read about to date. Maybe I'm missing out on something because I'm not into the Warhammer series, but if that's the case, this is a very user unfriendly novel.

5 out of 5 stars The Daemon's Curse: A tale of Malus Darkblade.......2006-11-07

Malus Darkblade has no redeemable virtues, so why do I care what happens to Him? It is a testament to authors, Dan Abnett and Mike Lee that I do. They have created one of the most interesting protagonists in my recent memory. Malus Darkblade is the bastard son of one of the most prominent dark elves in Hag Graef. In his quest to prove he is worthy to be called his son he manages to out evil every other dark elf I have had the pleasure of sinking my literary teeth in to. The Darkblade books (4 so far) are a raucous rollercoaster ride of violence and double-dealing. the Warhammer universe is rich in history and beautifully realized in these books. Pick them up, settle back and let the bloody ride begin!

4 out of 5 stars Ubermonkey says thumbs up!.......2006-10-18

THE GOOD: This a very good book! Dan Abnett nails the grim world of the dark elf in the grim world of the Warhammer universe. His writing style is terse and he holds nothing back. I truly enjoyed each scene as they were displayed before me.

THE BAD: Only if you have a weak stomach will this be bad. The dark elf society enjoys much carnage and Abnett likes to show as much as he can (without be sickly gratuitous).

THE UGLY: Malus...conniving, evil, smart and darn ugly!

Ubermonkey says that if you are looking for grim, dark fantasy with no real protagonist, this is for you.

                Book Description

The Star Kingdom has a new generation of officers! And this elite group hand-picked and trained by Honor Harrington herself is going to be needed immediately, as their first assignment turns out to be more dangerous than anyone expected. What was supposed to be a quiet outpost, far from the blazing conflict between the Star Kingdom of Manticore and the People's Republic of Haven has actually been targeted by an unholy alliance between the slaveholders of Manpower, the rival star kingdoms of Mesa and Monica, and the bureaucrats of the Solarian League. The alliance stands to benefit if the Havenites defeat Manticore, and are preparing for a surprise attack from the rear to divide Manticore's forces, which are already strained nearly to their limits. With their captain, the young Manticoran officers will risk their careers, if not their lives, on an unauthorized mission to expose and counter the threat to their Star Kingdom. Follow their journey as they show what they're made of as New York Times best-selling author David Weber begins a new series that will be a must for the hundreds of thousands of Honor Harrington fans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent side story development.......2007-02-20

Excellent series start, complementing the main Honor Harrington novels. Given the [British] Royal Navy achieved so much through its tradition, establishing how Manticore and allied students are taught role models, expectations, and when, no matter how good they are, sometimes all is left is to die gallantly, but never selling your life cheaply.

                3 out of 5 stars Crikey!!!.......2007-02-01

Whoo this is a long read. My first foray with David Weber's Honor work. It has moments of interest and I actually found some of the political elements intriguing. However, the book began to play out like a weak space opera. The plucky midshipmen became a pale backdrop to the ongoing issues of Captain Terekov. There is a lot of dialogue. There is a LOT of intrigue, perhaps too much. I found the book adequate, but tiring. A book of this type should have wrapped up within 300 pages.

There is some interesting military aspects to the work, but for the uninitiated they will likely stay away from Weber. As will I.

5 out of 5 stars Kicks off a "Next Generation" for the Honor Harrington Universe .......2006-10-23

This book is set in the same Universe and timeframe as David Weber's "Honor Harrington" novels, sometimes nicknamed the "Honorverse." The events take place at approximately the same time as "At all costs".

If you have not read any of the other books in the series: this novel is a space opera set thousands of years in the future. It tells the story of a group of mostly new and inexperienced crew members on a brand new and powerful space cruiser, "Hexapuma." They face first intrigue and terrorism, and then increasingly desperate battles against some really evil bad guys.

The Hexapuma's home star nation, Manticore, has just been attacked by a star nation called Haven, and her crew were expecting to be sent to join in that war. At the last minute their orders are changed and they are sent to show the flag in a relatively poor and underdeveloped area of the galaxy called the "Talbot Cluster". This cluster has just voted in a plebiscite for annexation to Manticore: a number of people in the cluster are deeply unhappy about this and start to make trouble. This trouble is stirred up by some truly evil corporations, and the people they have bought in various governments: the bad guys are making big profits from an illegal trade in slaves, and want to stop the annexation because Manticore is one of the nations which enforces the laws against slavery most strictly. The crew of Hexapuma are in for a more dangerous and exiting time than anyone expects!

If you are familiar with the rest of the series, this book features a group of new central characters, mostly in the next generation from the heroines and heroes of the previous books. Some of the main characters in "The Shadow of Saganami" are completely new, others have had parts in previous books or appeared in short stories. Two familiar characters from "Honor Among Enemies" are serving on Hexapuma and take part in the induction of the new cadets - Ginger Lewis, who has earned a commission and is now the ship's Engineer commander, and Aubrey Wanderman, who is now a Senior Chief Petty Officer. It is obvious that they are still at least friends, but Weber deliberately leaves it to the reader's imagination whether Ginger and Aubrey are now an item.

With the most recent group of books in the "Honorverse" Weber and his collaborators seem to be establishing three groups of characters and storylines, although they are all linked in a reasonably consistent manner into one history.

There is the main sequence featuring Honor Harrington herself, in which the most recent novels are "War of Honor" and "At All Costs." There is a series of espionage stories, in which "Crown of Slaves" is the first full length novel. And "The Shadow of Saganami" kicks off a "next generation" sequence featuring some younger officers in the navies of Manticore and the allied nation of Grayson, such as Helen Zilwicki and Abigail Hearns. (Other crew members on Hexapuma who have appeared in previous novels include Ginger Lewis and Aubrey Wanderman from "Honor Among Enemies.")

Honor Harrington herself gets a cameo at the start of this book, as she presides over a graduation ceremony for the cadets leaving the naval academy at Saganami island. She goes off to command Eighth fleet, a story which is told in "At all Costs": they go off in the opposite direction as new midshipmen on "Hexapuma."

If you are planning to read both this book and "At all costs", read "The Shadow of Saganami" first: while the books run approximately concurrently, this one finishes first and the consequences are reported back to Honor Harrington about three quarters of the way through "At all costs" which gives away the ending of this book if you read that one first.

Although this book has a lot of intrigue and politics in the mix, most of those who read David Weber's books for the battles will still enjoy it, as it has a lot of fighting, some in space, some on planets. It also includes some of his best writing.

In particular, because most of the battles involve single ships or small squadrons rather than huge fleets, Dave Weber's worst weakness - that he started off as a wargame designer and still sometimes thinks too much like a wargamer - does not come into play. I mean by this that captains and admirals commanding real ships crewed by thousands of human beings and representing vast resources usually cannot, do not, and should not regard them as expendable to the same extent that wargamers moving counters on a board or images on a computer screen can.

The new characters are fun and intersting to read about. I liked all the Honorverse books, but "The Shadow of Saganami" is one of my favourites.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Talk.......2006-09-19

I've read most if not all the Honor Harrington books. Over the years, they've become more about long discussions regarding politics and less and less about the action. Weber does a fabulous job with his action scenes, but he really needs to cut back on the lengthy discussions regarding politics.

There are scenes in this book where groups of The Bad Guys get together to discuss their bad plans. The scenes will go on for pages and pages but don't actually advance the story by taking so long. These scenes could be a half page. Crisp and clean.

If you don't mind skimming 10 or 15 pages at a time, waiting for a conclusion to the scene and for something meaningful to start, this is still a good book. But I had a hard time wading through large sections of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Net Force Shaow Of Honor.......2000-07-17

Recommendation- I recommend this book to anyone who is 13 years old and up because it is a great Sci-fi book mixed in with an action book. An example of great action is "The older man turned around and brought out a blued 9mm pistol. Without hesitation he pointed it at Matt's face. Another example is The younger man exploded pushing matt against the shelf in the backroom hard enough to make matt see black spots in his vision. Here is a example of a great sci-fi is book" Blinking up at the fluorescent lights on the ceiling, Andy stay up in the computer link chair in strategic analysis, feeling the gentle buzz of disconnection.' So if you enjoy action and sci-fi book this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Wimp of honor.......2000-05-14

The main character 'Andy' sounds like he is about 11 or 12 years old, while all his friends seem to be teenagers in the high school age range. What gives? Why the difference in age / maturity? I will not be buying any more Net Force books.

4 out of 5 stars Best One Yet!.......2000-05-11

Clancy's Net Force Explorer series just keeps getting better. Shadow of Honor deals with a rivalry between two students that turns ugly. Clancy once again maintains a good balance between VR (virtual reality) and RW (real world) settings. This addition to his growing young adult series features creative technology, stirring emotional sequences, as well as fast-paced chase scenes. Definately recommended for young and old Clancy fans alike.

Dominic St. Clair has just captured an American ship. Its crew is being delivered to the French authorities in Calais, and its holding will be sold to raise money for the French efforts against the English. Imagine Dominic's surprise to discover that Captain Arthur Fitzgerald's daughter had left without an apparent care for her safety or virtue. When Dominic first sees her, he decides that she is his prize alone. Unfortunately Abigail Fitzgerald seems to be immune to his charm and unappreciative of his efforts to protect her from the other men on board. Abigail doesn't understand why her father was sailing so close to England with a cargo of weapons. Nor did she understand his reasons for leaving her to the mercies of Captain Dominic St. Clair, either. His honeyed words and tender caresses confuse her, but she will not share the bed of the man who attacked her father's ship. Her father's crew stages a mutiny, and soon the ship goes down with all hands save herself and Dominic.. Jo Ann Ferguson is widely known for her romantic tales of adventure, and this latest release is no exception.

As the Coalition moves toward peace with the Rigelian Empire, the Fleet Security Agency (FSA) is under pressure. A corps of covert operatives, the FSA is supposed work for the Coalition Counsel and defend against other covert operators, saboteurs of the peace. But something is wrong inside the agency. On an FSA mission, Bear, an orphan-turned-Special-Forces commando, makes two life-changing discoveries. One: he's been a lifelong pawn in someone's deadly game. Two: through an epiphany, he realizes that, despite betrayal, he is right where he needs to be. Myria, the daughter of a celebrated war hero and Bear's real father, believed in all the good things the Ministry of Defense and Exploration (MDE) stood for—honor, dignity, and sanctity of life—while being naïve to the dark side; that is, until a terrorist bomb claims her father and her innocence. Book Description

Upasika Kee was a uniquely powerful teacher. Evocative of the great Ajahn Chah (teacher and author of Food For the Heart), her teachings are earthy, refreshingly direct, and often funny. In the twentieth century, she grew to become one of the most famous teachers in Thailand — male or female — all the more remarkable because, rarer still, she was a layperson!

                            5 out of 5 stars "Penetrating".......2006-01-10

I have had the pleasure and good fortune of having read a number of works associated with various accomplished Buddhists - particularly those within the Theravada tradition. It is extraordinarily encouraging to know that a "lay person", like Upasika Nanayon, appears to have been able to both devote such time to and achieve such depth in the pursuit and development of concentration and insight while following the Buddha's Dharma. Her life and instructions are an inspiration for those of us aspiring to achieve some measure of clarity and understanding along the Path. Even though she was a lay person, she strikes me as having been on par with other monastic Buddhist notables (e.g., Ajahn Chah) in her ability to comprehend, convey and apply the essence of the teachings. It is my modest opinion that practitioners will be exceptionally enriched by becoming acquainted with her written work(s).
