Extraordinary!.......2007-09-05
Once in a great while, someone leaps out of the pack called ordinary and becomes extraordinary. That is Karen Harter. Her work is so thrilling - because it is so apparently infused with truth.
You will not be sorry you spent time in the pages of WHERE MERCY FLOWS. Guaranteed!
Enjoy the read and keep the tissue handy!.......2006-04-30
This book is very easy to read and enjoy. From the vivid descriptions of the beautiful landscape of Northwest Washington, the knowledgeable details of fly fishing, and the unique lives of those who make up a small rural town - you are easily pulled into the story. It is an emotional story and I found myself wiping the tears away as the story unfolded.
fabulous character driven tale .......2006-04-01
Seven years ago teenager Samantha Dodd eloped with her boyfriend causing a strain with her mother and sister, but especially with her father, the "Judge". Over five years she had an extramarital affair that led to her giving birth to a boy, TJ. Her husband walked out on her and their marriage. Samantha was too proud to go home and face the judgment of her father until now. Ailing, lacking health insurance and afraid for TJ, Samantha returns to the home of her parents in Stillaguamish Valley, Washington.
Samantha's mom and sister welcome her and TJ with open arms. She also hits it off with childhood friend Donnie Duncan, who has always loved Samantha. However, her relationship with the Judge remains strained as she feels he judges her as a failure. When he learns that she suffers from a viral heart disease that will lead to his beloved daughter's death and danger from a stalker, the Judge takes action from the heart to stop the assailant and to learn from his friend Dr. Matt what he can do to save the life of his daughter.
This is a fabulous character driven tale in which Samantha will soon learn what true love really is. The cast is strong as each of the family members seems real and the dynamics with Samantha at the center fabulous as she sees her mom fears she will leave again; sis prays for her salvation; and dad remains in judgment. She will realize she has been judge, jury and hang-woman and must pardon herself in this superb heart-wrenching inspirational family drama.

Wonderful tearjerker!.......2006-03-20
I was very lucky to get an advanced reading copy of this book. OMG, I felt everything that Samantha was feeling. Samantha is working through her own feelings of self-worthlessness when she returns home. The seven years that she has been gone, after running away with her high school sweetheart, have not been kind to Sam. She has lived on the edge, while trying to be a good mother to her son. She returns home, wondering if she will be accepted, and also her beautiful son, the result of a one-night stand with a man of a different race. Not only is she and her son accepted by her family, they are also cherished. However, it seems that the acceptence that Sam is seeking, comes not from her family, but from within herself. I found this to be a beautiful story of discovery and cried throughout most of the book. The emotions brought forward by this author are real and it was another book that I couldn't go to sleep without finishing.

Fun sprawling book.......2007-07-17
Fun sprawling book. I did find it a bit hard to follow because it had been so long since I had read the previous books.
Pun After Pun After Pun After Pun After Pun After Pun After Pun..........2006-09-02
William Simmons first book in this series was a very successful parody of the vampire genre. Christopher Csejthe, reeling from the loss of his wife and child winds up in the clutches of a well-meaning vampire with the end result that he is half way to being a vampire himself - a vampire notwannabe if you will. In the ensuing stories Chris gets infected by a werewolf bite (making him a dhampyre notwannabe). When he manages to do away with Erzebet Bathory, the master of New York, Chris has only one choice - to take over the rule of the city before someone kills him for it. Ever hapless, he decides he knows better and, to put it plainly, runs away to Louisiana.
As you can probably predict, living a creaky old house by a zombie filled graveyard with your werewolf girlfriend and a drop dead gorgeous recovering vampire is not conducive to long-term peace. In no time at all Csejthe is receiving living body parts in the mail and unexpected visits by giant cyborgs intent on remodeling the neighborhood. Bad things happen to good people and Chris is off to New York to face the responsibilities he has been hiding from. But vampire politics aside Chris also discovers that a group of revenant Nazi's are determined to use his blood in their quest for eternal life. Enter Dr. Mengele and the valkyries.
I'm going to get beaten up for this but I found Simmons writing more irritating than funny this time around. I don't want you to get the impression that I like being sarcastically critical. I would much rather get sucked into a great book and write gushingly enthusiastic reviews. But what was a good thing in a thin volume wears less well when the author remains determined to write exactly one kind of book time after time. The books, of course, getting heavier and more expensive. Writing and characters have to develop and Habeas Corpses only offers iteration. Chris Csejthe causes 90% of his problems and I find main characters who cannot manage their own lives are a drag.
In addition, it quickly becomes clear that the puns and in-jokes were written first and the plot is really an effort to set them up. Be aware that you need to be over 50 or a horror film geek or you will miss much of the book's humor. Also be prepared for a lot of stereotype jokes. This works in moderation in a book that is genuinely funny on its own, but when it is pasted on over a plot that doesn't always flow the laughs begin to taper off. I'm not sure if this book will make it to paperback, but I'd wait for it to get there before buying it.
Dark humor.......2006-02-16
Chris Csejthe just can't get a break. Trying to live in a quiet southern town and the assassins just keep on coming. Taking over the NY clan and then getting shot. The book is a great read, very dark humor that is over the heads of some of the undead. Buffy and Anita Blake jokes are priceless.
The history review of gods and goddess' from all religions is wonderous to read. Mark really does his homework when writing.
Who Needs A Life When You Have A Half-Life?.......2006-01-09
Chris Csejthe may well be one of the best, and certainly one of the quirkiest, heroes in genre literature, and the character's latest adventure, third in the Half-Life Chronicles, does not disappoint. With the patented Simmons combination of mythical and real good guys and monsters, pop culture references (the Buffy/Anita Blake riff is a scream), whiplash-inducing turns, and some truly chilling premises, this is a first-rate thrill ride. And did I mention the puns? A solid, enjoyable read that makes me eager for the next one.
A fun third instalment of the half life of Chris Cséjthe .......2005-11-23
Chris Cséjthe is now Doman of the New York vampire enclave. However, his problems are far from over as repeated assassination attempts show. When one attempt is successful enough to part Chris's spirit from his body he learns more about his own abilities and the afterlife than he ever bargained for. He also finds out that not all the horrors in the world are birthed from normal "monsters" or have fangs attached.
This has been an enjoyable third outing of Chris's half life adventures. The story has some unexpected twists and turns. Chris's character also grows and learns and the story is chock full of pop culture references, puns and literary quotes. It makes me look forward to more books in this series. For a reasonably light hearted, semi-vampire novel with a likeable central character these books are worth picking up for a read.

A book to start with..........2006-08-02
If you've just been bitten with the idea of starting a B & B as I have, this is a good book to start with. Lot's of info, with just enough detail to keep it from being a text book. I'm looking ahead to about 10 years before I go this route in my retirement, and this is a book I will always keep handy. It answered questions I didn't even know I had at this stage and kept my feet on the ground without bursting my bubble as some other books did.
How to Start and Operate Your Own Bed-and-Breakfast.......2006-02-17
This book was very informative and a fast read. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the B&B business.
Well-Written, Easy Read.......2004-08-18
This book is a good introduction to the Bed & Breakfast business; I'm glad I read it first. It contains useful information and the tone is pleasant and light. But it is just a little dated (almost 10 years old), and you need to read several more books to get all the information you need (such as The Complete Idiot's Guide. . .)
Folksy, Practical . . . Very Sweet.......2004-05-02
The tone of this book is as lovely as I'm sure the author/innkeeper is. She's experienced at her business and her craft of teaching the art of owning a Bed and Breakfast.
This is one of many books you should purchase/read if you are interested in this field. Look for others (So, You Want to Be An Innkeeper, for example) for more hard-core business advice.
The nitty gritty of running the shop........2000-06-18
This book goes room by room into decorating, supplies needed, rules, safety, and the likes which really helps when you are running a B&B. IT failed to really go into depth about the business aspects which I thought was a shame. This book is great if you are already running a B&B or want to decorate your house like one, but I would suggest buying several other B&B books to help give the complete picture. It also include recipies which was an added bonus. A good book for the right need.

Book Description
A Bed of Earth is a haunting journey to a parallel version of sixteenth-century Venice, where a fierce territorial rivalry between two noble families unearths a supernatural force from beneath the placid surface of the canals and rotting understructure of the city.
The struggle between the two families for space on the Isle of the Dead, the overcrowded burial ground for generations of Venetian nobility, boils over and a fourteen-year-old girl is forced to pay the ultimate price. As the years pass on, parties complicit in her disappearance begin to suffer the consequences in a series of shocking deaths. A humble apprentice gravedigger is left to sort out the mysteries and subdue the ancient terror that threatens to destroy the entire republic.
Customer Reviews:
Almost poetic view of fantasy Venice.......2002-12-12
In a version of renassaince Venice not too far different from that in our own history, doomed love works its magic. Two families have feuded for centuries over a stretch of land in a graveyard. Generations later, the feud continues, working its destructive force on the children of the noble families. Meralda, a dela Scorpio, falls for a handsome painter but is betrayed by her servant and by the heir to the Barbarons. Beatrixa, daughter of the Barbaron, falls for a ghost spirit who claims to be a dela Scorpio. And Bartolome, the gravedigger, finds his true love too late.
Author Tanith Lee creates a fascinating world where magic treads just lightly enough to make history into something colorful and wonderful. Her richly drawn characters, especially Silvio and Beatrixa, with their doomed love, cannot help create reader sympathy and fascination. Lee's descriptions of her mythical Venice (Venus) ring true both for the Venice of our own history and for that of myth.
Readers looking for action and adventure will not find much of that here. Instead, A BED OF EARTH is a strange and doomed romance, a poem of people and souls, and a bit of philosophy.
A Fever-Dream Venice.......2002-08-26
The art of alchemy is in the transformation. The third book in Lee's alchemically-based series set in a magical Venice follows this theme closer than the other novels in the series. It starts out as dark as imaginable. Feuding families, dark secrets, supernatural vendettas. But the novel changes, from a black-hearted to tragedy to a twilight-hued romance. The novel follows the fates of people involved in a particularly cruel prank-and all manner of comeuppance-not excluding forgiveness-is played out. It's a mélange of gothic horror, morality fable, and historical romance as only Lee can tell it. Her usual strengths are on display-fever dream imagery ("The eels leapt through the lagoon, like silver whips, fracturing the mirror-moon..."), erotica, devilish twists of fate and the odd historical anecdote. It is a bit more phantasmal than usual, but that's hardly a sin.
Product Description
Sandstone aquifers are common worldwide: they contain a significant proportion of the Earth's fresh water supplies. However, because of their textural complexity and the frequent occurrence of both matrix and fracture flow, prediction of flow and pollutant migration is still a considerable challenge. This volume contains a collection of papers summarizing current research on an example sandstone aquifer: the UK Permo-Triassic Sandstone sequence. These red bed, organic-poor sandstones are of fluvial and aeolian origin, are often strongly textured, and are cut by discontinuities of a wide range of permeabilities. Matrix flow often dominates, but fracture flow also occurs. The papers in the volume deal with research on saturated and unsaturated flow, and solute and non-aqueous-phase liquid movement. They cover investigations from laboratory to regional scale, and involve a wide range of approaches, from petrophysical through geophysical and hydrochemical to modelling. The book is intended to be of interest to researchers and practitioners involved in water resources and groundwater pollution, and to hydrogeology, water engineering, and environmental science students.

Kelp forest are cool.......2001-08-10
The cover isn't real attractive but ,oh the book is so cool. Well written for the younger audience and for us older folks. The book focuses on the Kelp forest and its inhabitants. The world protected sea otter is featured many times. The pictures fit the text perfect. The book was first printed in 1992 and definitely endures the test of time. In the beginning of the book, Norbert Wu states the purpose of the book: "to help children discover beauty and life in a world they may otherwise not know at all." I'd say he achieved his goal. Kids can read this one alone, in a class setting and again with their parents.
What a beautiful, informative little book!.......2001-05-30
This slim bit of eye candy gave me a great little introduction to the Kelp Forests! It has wonderful pictures and a great description of the kelp forest ecosystem. It's great for children, too!
Book Description
The Olduvai Bed I archaeological sites, dating back to almost 2 million years, have been at the epicenter of the debate on how early humans behaved. This book presents a new analytical approach which, after having been applied to these sites, has produced unexpected results: the association of stone tools and faunal remains at most Olduvai Bed I sites is accidental and not related to hominid behavior. Only at one site, FLK Zinj, is this association intentional. Through careful taphonomic analysis of this site, coupled with detailed experimental work, it is possible to rule out the hypothesis that hominids were passive scavengers. Hominids were targeting meat in the exploitation of animals, which they probably obtained through some degree of predation, and their behavior seems to have been more advanced than previously thought.

Contemporary Christian Morality: Real Questions, Candid Responses.......2005-07-22
I have thoroughly enjoyed using this book for a class I am teaching. I have found the author to be a very compassionate, human man. I think if more priests taught from this book, there would be more people in the catholic church.
Good summary of comtemporary moral issues........1999-10-28
Richard Sparks presents a summary of contemporary Catholic moral theology that is both traditional and contemporary. He addresses many pressing moral issues in a way that is faithful to Catholic teaching without sounding dogmatic. He also is very ecumenical in his approach which shows the common natue of Christian Morality on most issue (with major exceptions such as birth control etc.). It is an excellent resource for anyone who wants real answers to hard questions in a user friendly format.
