Book Description
The classic fable of Hruna the humpback whale and his journey into love, mystery, and spiritual awakening in the waters of the world.

Moving, Poetic, Profound.......2006-05-11
I have read this book several times, as a young adult, an adult, and a parent reading to children. Loved it every time. The story is captivating as story, but Siegel is also a gifted poet and the language is as beautiful as the tale it tells.
Whales are people too!.......2005-12-11
None of the reviews do these books justice. The first book, Whalesong, is a very good book. The next 2 books get better and better. But you really need to read Whalesong before going on the others.
Yes, 'saving the whales' is an obvious theme, and for good reason! Maybe if more people thought about what we are doing to the planet from the whales' point of view, they would change.
But, that is not really what this trilogy is about. These books are about the spiritual journey, about visionquests, about life and death. Each book in the trilogy gets better. Start with Whalesong and by the time you finish Ice you will not be the same. Allow this beautiful, spiritually uplifting tale to inspire and transform you!
Very consciousness-raising, and by that I mean spiritually. Also poetically written. You'll shed some tears, but you will feel enriched.
What if...just what if...it's true??? What if whales really do have a culture as emotionally and spiritually rich as our own?
You think that sounds far-fetched? You won't after you read these wonderful books.
Whalesong.......2003-02-05
A very unsuspensful book. I didn't like how the whales knew so much and at the same time didn't ex: they knew what ice was and didn't know what a boat was. I also didn't like how the author made imagery and you didn't know what the object was that he was talking about. I also didn't like the story and the plot. You could also tell what was going to happen next. The book was about a calf who has many adventures, then he gets older and leads the pod.
Whalesong.......2003-02-05
I think this book was alright. it wasn't the best book that i have ever read. it was only good when somebody died. i wanted Hruna to die just to get some ction in the story. i would recommend this book only to people that like emotional stories because a loit of people would cry but i didn't.
Whalesong.......2003-02-05
This book was very descriptive. Every sentence Robert Siegel wrote makes your mind boggle. I didn't like this book a lot because it was hard to understand. The end of the book was probably the best part because there was lots of action.

A Good Book--4 stars.......2007-04-27
Dragonwings is a good book to read because you have a good feeling to know someone's dream came true, like Moonshadow's father's dream. Moonshadow is a young man. When he was just eight years old, he had a chance to join his father who he had never seen before in the United States. He went through a difficult time passing immigration. This book talks about how Chinese people settled down in Chinatown and the experience in 1906 with the big earthquake in San Francisco, and then how Moonshadow and his father relocated to Oakland. Moonshadow's father is a good kite maker, and he has a fabulous dream to make a flying machine. Moon Shadow writes a letter to the Wrights telling them how his father likes to fly too, and wishes they can help him. The father's dream came true when he made a flying machine in 1909. Lawrence Yep's historical novels shows rich traditions and the culture of the Chinese community. I will recommend this book to people who are American born Chinese because they can learn from this book about how difficult it was for their ancesters to get into this country, and how they worked so hard and how they survived in white society, so they will appreciate them. Overall it is a good book to read, I just have some words that were hard to understand for me, maybe because they are too old fashioned.
Upset.......2007-04-18
I was honestly upset with this book not as good as i thought it would be, I mean the story was just boring overall. The only thing I thought was interesting that they used kites and I would be curious to ask the author why.
snooze fest.......2007-02-22
horrible
I am 13 years old and I hate this book
we read it in english class this year. About two people actually fell asleep reading it in 5th period. Really boring. There was one exciting part to the story. The names are hard to keep track of. I also don't like the fact that all throughout this book the boy refers to the white men as "demons". At first I thought the book was suposed to teach a lesson. But in the end it didn't
don't buy this book
Dragonwings.......2006-11-30
Wow,this is the best book I've ever read in years. This book starts off with a boy named Moonshadow,Moonshadows mom,and grandmother. They are in there farm allways workinging in the farm and not having any fun.
Moonshadow always wonders how the goldenmountains (America)looks like. When Moonshadow visits the goldenmountains and finds his dad there. The white demons (white people) are mean to the chinamen and all yhey care about is themselves.
Dragonwings.......2006-05-25
Moonshadow starts out as a shy little boy who lives in China who was curious about The Land of the Golden Mountain (America). Men from China would go to America in search for a better life. This is what Moonshadow's father did. One day Moonshadow was told that he had to choose between either staying in China and never knowing his father or being taken to his father in The Land of the Golden Mountain, he chose to leave. On the boat he was very frightened because he heard the older men telling stories of how they were almost tortured in America which did not make it any easier for Moonshadow to leave China. When he arrives he encounters a couple of "scary" things before they get to where he will be staying. Everyone with the last name of Lee works in a Laundry Shop, which is owned by Uncle Bright Star and White Deer. Moonshadow is greeted with Demon (white people) clothing. He already doesn't like what he sees. Moon shadow faces many difficulties such as being mugged, robbed, being picked on and racism through out the whole story. Towards the end of the story Moonshadow's father Windrider discovers that he wants to peruse his dream and he will need Moonshadow's help to achieve that dream. When he tells everyone that he will be moving out they are hurt and angry. They live by a white demoness and her niece, Miss. Whitlaw and Robin. While they are living there Windrider works as a handy man for Mr. Alger. Everything is perfect until the Earthquake comes. Miss. Whitlaw and Robin, Moonshadow and Windrider have to separate. It is up to Moonshadow to take over there new house because father is working on his dream but, will he finish in time and will it work? You find out!

Book Description
Perfect for diehard fans as well as readers discovering McCaffrey for the first time, this dazzling new volume features three classic novels from the early years of Pern–Dragonsdawn, Dragonseye, and Moreta.
The spectacular planet Pern seems a paradise to its new colonists–until unimaginable terror turns it into hell. Suddenly deadly spores are falling like silver threads from the sky, destroying everyone and everything they touch. Pern is in mortal danger. The only thing that can stop the Thread is the fire from Pern’s flying dragons. Now, the colonists must join forces with the dragons to burn the Thread before the parasite devours any and all organic life–and turns lush Pern into a barren wasteland.
On Dragonwings traces the story of the early generations on Pern. From the colonists who first created the fire-breathing dragons for protection, through the rise of the dragonriders, these three novels set readers on a daring quest to protect a beautiful and extraordinary planet.

As other reviewers have written, its actually
a combination of three of her previous and
old books.
Expecting to reading a new book, I was surprised

these books.
No one to blame but myself since I should have
read the description more carefully...
If your old copies are falling apart this is for you!.......2007-02-20
After 20 years of reading and re-reading my favorite Pern novels my books have become quite tattered and worn. They desperately need replacement so I came to Amazon. Having three books published together under one cover is great for me. The only thing I wish is that I could get them in hardcover.
Pern Fans.......2006-02-15
I could read that this was three books in one quite clearly. It's a very good idea for any old Dragonriders fan whose books are falling apart- or for anyone new to the series to get some background on the characters
Herodotus.......2005-12-06
This is supposed to be for a review of the book, not the rantings of consumer stupidity. Yes, it is a good idea to be sure of the contents of a book before buying. That's good sense. I own all the books but the older ones are definately falling apart. This is a nicely chosen compilation of three previously published dragonrider novels. These three stories from earlier Falls fit well together. Almost like a Pernese book of histories. I'd recommend it for any Pern lover, old and new.

I can't belive people don't read the dectription before buying. It is NOT in "fine print" saying its an antholigy. I purchased this because it was all three books, as my orgional copies are much worse for wear.

Summary of the book and my feelings about Yep's writing........1998-04-03
A young boy, Moon Shadow, only 8 years old, lives in China with his mother and grandmother. His father, Wind Rider, lives in the US. Moon Shadow has never met his father and knows him only through letters and his mother's stories. On a trip back to China, a man comes to Moon Shadow's home. He claims to be a family member and a friend of Wind Rider's. He also says that he is to take Moon Shadow back to the US with him. Although it is dangerous, Moon Shadow trusts the man, and his father, Moon Shadow begins the long journey from the Middle Kingdom (China) and the Land of the Golden Mountain (the USA). In this new land, Moon Shadow finally meets his father, and finds out just what life is like for the Chinese in this forgein land. There he also must overcome a new language, long, hard hours of work, discrimination, Wind Rider's cousin Black Dog's opuim addiction, moving, and the San Francisco earthquake. Told from Moon Shadow's perspective, this book describes what it was like for the Chinese in the US at the beginning of the 20th century. Although I did not enjoy Lawrence Yep's writing style for the most part, there were certain passages such as the earthquake, and how Moon Shadow and Wind Rider deal with Black Dog's opuim addiction, where I was quite captivated. I also felt that Mr. Yep really brought the charactors to life and ended in just the right place. The ending had closer, but was not so clear cut that the reader knew just what happened. Instead, the book leaves the reader with just a little bit of hope and wonder. Although I would not recommend this book for the writing technique, I did learn a great deal about what the Chinese went through to get over here, and then what happened to them once they arrived. I think that this a terrific book for anyone who is studying, or is interested in Chinese immigration to the USA.

Book Description
Moon Shadow is eight when he sails from China to join his father, Windrider, in America. Windrider lives in San Francisco's Chinatown and works in a laundry. Moon Shadow has never seen him.
Moon Shadow soon loves and respects this father, a man of genius, a man with a fabulous dream. With Moon Shadow's help, Windrider is willing to endure the mockery of the other Chinese, the poverty, and longing for his own country to make his dream come true.
Inspired by the account of a Chinese immigrant who made a flying machine in 1909, Laurence Yep's historical novel beautifully portrays the rich traditions of the Chinese community as it made its way in a hostile new world.

Book Description
Carol P. Christ combines personal experience with historical and philosophical reflection to create a new model of embodied thinking. This first systematic Thealogy of the Goddess argues that the shift from God to Goddess signals a transformation of western theology, philosophy, and ethics, offering the hope that we can create a different world.
Customer Reviews:
Loving Goddess with mind as well as magic.......2002-08-23
One wonders just what book it is that the reader from Massachusetts read. I've read REBIRTH OF THE GODDESS twice and I wouldn't have recognized it from the review.
The chief value of the book for me is its thealogy. Many of us who engage and are engaged by the Sacred as female have come to Her from Christianity and Judaism rather than through New Age or neo-pagan movements. We have been seeking a way of understanding our affectional experience of Goddess in ways that are logically honest and intellectually defensible. We are not all given to the practice of magic, nor unequivocally believe in reincarnation, nor require the presence of a male god. Carol Christ clearly has come up through the mainstream of Western theology, is conversant with its contemporary developments (process thought particularly) and applies them coherently and effectively, and she has left this reader with a way of understanding Goddess that is empowering, uplifting, and above all sane.
Perhaps as a male I come to REBIRTH OF THE GODDESS with different needs and expectations than the reader from Massachusetts. But I'm gambling that there are other readers, women as well as men, who will find in this book the approach they need to enjoy and discuss their spirituality and bring it into the open marketplace of contemporary ideas.
A mind-opening book.......2000-11-27
I encountered this book while exploring neopaganism/Goddess religion, but I would heartily reccommend it even to someone with no interest in such things. The book challenges points of view such as objectivity, dualism, and social structures that I had taken for granted and never thought of questioning, and does so in a constructive way. The writing is warm and personal, but I find this suited to the subject. Can an impersonal "scientific" view really do justice to something as personal and human as religion? I reccommend this book to anyone wanting to broaden their point of view about religion, social structure, or life in general.
Recreate........2000-11-16
This book was both a fun and provocative read. Christ's prose is moving, and the underlying message is a move for social change. I second the motion. In my theological studies, accounts written by church fathers are dry and uninspiring. This book calls to attention many often overlooked perspectives. One, is the oppression of religions that follow the patriarchal code. Two, is the influence patriarchy has had on all academically accepted accounts of history. Three, Christ challenges the prevailing paradigm of dualism, or thinking in unequal opposition (Black, bad; White, good. Subjective, bad; objective, good.), and favors a kind of continuum (something doesn't have to be all or nothing, one or the other). Objectivity is not sacrificed, but rather enriched by the author's personal experiences. Read this book if you'd like to see a new perspective. Even if you've seen the perspective, read it for further enlightenment.
Not at all what feminist theology needs.......2000-02-28
I read this over the summer in preparation for my master's thesis. If I had been in my 20s, or hadn't spent three years in divinity school, I probably would have been enthralled.
Fortunately or unfortunately, I'm not in my 20s anymore, and this sort of undocumented, personalized screed is not at all what feminist theology and the goddess movement need to become more than a fringe phenomenon. Christ seems determined that personal belief replace verifiable fact; that discredited and/or minority views be accepted without checking simply because they were promulgated by women; that any attempt at objectivity is "male scholarship" and thus has no place in goddess religion.
To say that this book was a profound disappointment is putting it mildly. This is everything that feminist scholarship is accused of: shrill, hysterical, badly argued, confessional, personalized, and very, very slanted. I was extremely upset by its contents, and even more that so many women who are trying to bring a female perspective to religious scholarship while still maintaining some semblance of academic training will be equated with Carol Christ.
I would strongly recommend Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Rosemary Radford Ruether, or even Starhawk over this. This book does nothing to advance the cause of feminist, female-oriented religion, goddess worship, or religious scholarship.
an important work for all Goddess followers.......1998-02-21
Carol Christ, who is trained in theology, has written a serious book, using traditional methodology, to explicate Goddess spirituality. This is a thought-provoking work that is essential to the library of every woman who is on this spiritual path.
