Journey to the End of the Night (New Directions Paperbook)
ASIN: 0521378540 |
Book Description
This textbook series is ambitious in scope. It provides concise and lucid introductions to major works of world literature from classical antiquity to the twentieth century. It is not confined to any single literary tradition or genre, and will cumulatively form a substantial library of textbooks on some of the most important and widely read literary masterpieces. Each book is devoted to a single work and provides a close reading of that text, as well as a full account of its historical, cultural, and intellectual background, a discussion of its influence, and a guide to further reading. The contributors to the series give full consideration to the linguistic issues raised by each text, and, within the overall framework of the series, are given complete freedom in the choice of their critical method. Where the text is written in a language other than English, full account is taken of readers studying the text in English translation. While critical jargon is avoided, important technical terminology is fully explained and thus this series will be genuinely accessible to students at all levels and to general readers.

Helpful Guide to Great Lit.......2000-06-09
This is a rare find, because it concentrates on a book by Celine. Hailing 'Journey' as a masterpiece, the book analyzes the key components and the picaresque adventures of Bardamu. Good companion.

Book Description
The world on the other side of the rift: Kelewan, a land seething with political intrigue and deadly conspiracies. Following the opulent panoply of Daughter Of The Empire and the dazzling pageantry of Servant Of The Empire comes the resounding conclusion to the Empire trilogy.
Besieged by spies and rival houses, stalked by a secret and merciless brotherhood of assassins, the brilliant Lady Mara of the Acoma faces the most deadly challenge she has ever known. The fearsome Black Robes see Mara as the ultimate threat to their ancient power. In search of allies who will join her against them, Mara must travel beyond civilization's borders and even into the hives of the alien cho-ja. As those near and dear to her fall victim to many enemies, Mara cries out for vengeance. Drawing on all of her courage and guile she prepares to fight her greatest battle of all--for her life, her home, and the Empire itself.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book, fantastic series! Doesn't disappoint........2007-08-22
This is a fantastic conclusion to the thrilling series on the other side of the Riftwar! Although the companion series (Riftwar Saga) should be read first, I accidentally started by reading this book, and it was fantastic! It can be read as a stand-alone novel, but the experience is so much richer when the novels are read in order. I've read the whole series about six times!
The authors have created an incredible world full of intrigue and suspense which will keep you turning those pages. Anthropologically speaking, the parallels which Wurts and Feist have drawn between the different "families" on Kelewan and the different cultures in our world are fascinating! There are many similarities between ancient Japanese cultures and the worlds of Kelewan (the concepts of honor and ritual suicide being the strongest), but there also appears the odd parallel to ancient Mayan and Incan society, and the peoples outside the Empire remind strongly of Russian, Viking and Bedouin cultures. When the "barbarians" from Midkemia are brought over, there is a clash between their culture and that of the Tsuranni which is extremely redolent of east vs. west (the Midkemians ride horses, they have metal, their concept of honor is vastly different, etc.)
I would strongly recommend this series, even if you're not a big fan of fantasy. The character sketches alone are worth it! This will always remain one of my favorites, and I plan on reading it again just as soon as I've replaced my tattered copy.
The grand finale for House Acoma.......2007-06-16
This book is the third and final installment following the trials and tribulations of Mara, Ruling Lady of House Acoma of the Empire of Tsuranuanni.
Again, Feist and Wurts work well together. Feist brings strong character development and intense battle scenes, while Wurts leads the reader through dizzying layers of intrigue.
Of the three books, this is my favourite. We see Arakasi, Mara's Spy Master come to the fore, employing his skills and spy network against such worthy foes as the lethal Hamoi Tong group of assassins, we learn much more of the mysterious cho-ja insectoids, and we see Mara and her allies try to avoid destruction while tiptoeing around orders given by the powerful magicians of the Assembly, known as Great Ones.
My sole disappointment is that the trilogy is over and no other books were written about this alien world and culture.
I highly recommend this book, but suggest reading the first two (Daughter Of The Empire and Servant Of The Empire).
Disappointing.......2007-01-17
I was quite excited about the conclusion to the series. Feist is a favorite author and the two earlier books in the trilogy was quite good. I was therefore sorely disappointed when I read Mistress to the Empire and found it to be in a whole other class than the previous two.
I am now only half-way into the story since I can't keep my mind on it. The story never grabs me the way the other two did. It's heavy, unengaging and repetitive. There are long sections where nothing happens at all or one is following uninteresting happenings with extra characters. The writing seemed forced and the text never flowed effortlessly.
I really want to finish the story but I find myself picking up other books instead since I so often laid it down while reading it. I'm not used to having to tell myself: You have to read it! with Feist in my hands so this was very unexpected.
I will finish it someday. But it has to be said: This book was a huge let-down.
An unappealing and repetitive end to a good series.......2006-10-28
Before I start this review, I would like to say that I really liked "Daughter of the Empire", and greatly enjoyed reading it. I also enjoyed reading "Servant of the Empire", although parts of it and certain characters (Kevin) bothered me.
With that said, the main reason why I greatly disliked this book is that it is, in two words, completely unnecessary. At the end of the second book, Mara has accomplished the goals she set out for at the beginning of the trilogy; she's restored her house to power and then some, and avenged the deaths of her father and brother.
Because of this, the progress made in the third book (if it can be called progress) merely seems like the authors, for whatever reason, felt that she needed to vanquish ALL her enemies, tie up all plot lines, and become as powerful as she could humanly be in Kelewan. Not to mention get back her Barbarian lover, thereby making the well-written scene where she has to give him away in the second book utterly meaningless.
Add on to this the "Empire" formula, which appears to be
1. Mara gets in a crisis.
2. Good people, and just the right people she need, show up.
3. She takes a tragic loss that inspires her to go on.
4. She wins in the end, rising up another rank.
This was evident in the first two books, but it was alright, because it was interesting to watch her make her machinations (even if they were a bit too good for her experience level)in order to get stronger and seek revenge.
In the third book, it simply causes the book to drag, mainly because her enemies are contrived (only Jiro of the Anasati remains, and he only goes from an opportunist antagonist to an outright enemy in the third book), and I have a feeling the authors knew it, which is why they had to make some ridiculous add-ins. Suddenly, instead of dealing with a dangerous, politically adept foe that, while difficult,it is possible to defeat or at least stall, she has to fight the Assembly of Magicians, along with a dangerous and mysterious Gang of Assassins (TM).
But of course, she couldn't possibly lose to the assassins, or end up falling in this book after reaching the height of power. She's Mara. So the authors resort to something I thought I wouldn't see in a series that seemed to focus heavily on Mara surviving through political machinations, good picking of servants, and her mind; an actual Deus Ex Machina.
My advice, if you are a fan of the series, is to stop after the second book.
Wonderful characters, engaging plot (review for the entire trilogy).......2006-01-08
I first read this when it was published and I still come back to it every year or two, because the story of Mara's struggle for survival never gets old. She's truly a woman in a man's world, reminiscent of Queen Elizabeth, albeit in a culture whose inspiration is obviously from the Orient. And yet, as other readers have mentioned, Mara doesn't take on mannish traits to win, she's always purely female. And she uses that, at times, ruthlessly.
The culture in which she exists is so stagnate, so utterly drowning in pointless tradition that seeing Mara figure out ways to both work with it and around it in order to *change* her people's entire way of life never ceases to be a joy. She proves herself to be a tactical genius and yet she still makes mistakes, she has prejudices to overcome, ways of thinking that she has to force herself to change, she's still so very human and you can identify with her. Her sorrows, regrets, fears, they're all very real and you can't help but feel for her, worry that maybe this one time she and her House won't survive.
Such wonderfully well-developed characters, even the minor ones, beautifully described culture and Machiavellian politics. The entire trilogy is a feast for someone looking for books heavy on the plot while still being character driven. When you've turned the last page, read the last sentence, you'll find yourself wishing that there were books more to devour, because you won't want to let go of Mara or her world.

This Book Is a Star.......2003-12-02
Propliner enthusiasts consider the Lockheed Constellation to be the most beautiful airliner built. In this book, authors Curtis Stringfellow and Peter Bowers do an admirable job of presenting this graceful bird, both civil and military variants, in considerable detail.
The authors describe each variant - the Army C-69; the civilian 049, 749, 1049, and 1649 Starliner; and military Super Constellations - in considerable detail. They cover Constellation operations with major and second-tier operators on every continent. Reference sections detail accidents and incidents, surviving Constellations, major operators, and civil registrations. The publisher also provides an index, a feature lacking in the Airliner Tech series. Included are shots of the flight deck and interior for each of the major commercial variants. The wealth of detail in this book is sure to please any propliner or aviation enthusiast!

Not Believable.......2006-06-06
I rated it as fair when it actually was between fair and good. Ficton is fiction, especiallty about space travel with many different species of aliens. It takes a special person to write about this material and David Drake is not. I will not read another one of his books. Even though this is fiction we still want the characters to be somewhat believable. The main character is all the superheroes rolled into one. I did not find this book to be awful because the author did find creative imagination in a number of parts of the book. Overall, I was diappointed.
Newcomer.......2005-07-28
I am sad that an artist of such caliber would stoop to concealing a crotch novel in a space tale. This one even involved bestiality. Sad. I'll be sure to look twice at the next David Drake tale BEFORE I buy it.
Kill an alien, fu#* a blonde.......2003-12-29
This book always brings a smile to my face. It's the first Drake book I ever read, after hearing Dave criticize Kuttner for writing "Kill an alien, fu#* a blonde" stories, because that's essentially what this is. It's also a sort of first foray into space opera predating Drake's Lt. Leary series by many years. A good romp through a great hotel on jets!
Great reading, Drake is a real master........1997-04-16
I loved this book from front to back! The way Drake describes in detail the workings of the Starliner and its crew is fantastic. Every world that is visited is a new treat. Drake goes so far as to detailing the color that street lights burn and the different way the local gunpowder behaves.
Do yourself a favor and read this book!
