Book Description
Ruth Rothwax, a successful woman with her own business, Rothwax Correspondence, can find order and meaning in writing words for other people—condolence letters, thank-you letters, even you-were-great-in-bed letters. But as the daughter of Edek Rothwax, an Auschwitz survivor with a somewhat idiosyncratic approach to the English language, Ruth can find no words to understand the loss of her family experienced during World War II.
Ruth is obsessed with the idea of returning to Poland with her father, but she doesn't quite understand why she feels this so intensely. To make sense of her family's past, yes. To visit the places where her beloved mother and father lived and almost died, certainly. But she knows there's more to this trip. By facing Poland, and the past, she can finally confront her own future.

Haunting, Riveting, Suprisingly Funny and All Too Real.......2007-09-04
An Austrian friend recently told me that Lily Brett is a favorite author among Germans and Austrians because "Jewish" subjects are very popular. My friend was surprised that I'd never heard of Brett, especially since she lives in New York, is Jewish and writes in English. Frankly, I had no preconceptions about the subject matter or the author of "Too Many Men."
Hardly the light summer read that I anticipated from the title, I could not put this one down. What a revelation. She can write, but she can tell a story too.
I can't understand why she isn't as popular here as she is in her native Austrlia and those German-speaking countries. She's amazing!
I could smell Lodz........2006-04-25
I have not been able to put this novel down, since it arrived from Amazon two days ago. So many memories of Poland and Lodz came flooding back. I have walked those streets and can still smell that air.
She dealt with many of the problems that I dealt with when I wrote my own book, A Stairwell in Lodz. How do you write about the horror? Lily Brett's use of a ghost was a unique way of presenting Holocaust history.
Why couldn't this book have been called, Return, instead of Too Many Men?
The Best Novel I've Read!.......2004-10-19
Yes, without a doubt, "Too Many Men" is the best novel I've ever read. I want more, a sequel. Lily Brett is tremendous at character development and at stirring the readers' emotions, from laughing until you cry to anger to pity to anticipation to deep sympathy - and everything in between. This should be required reading for students. It is for everyone, male or female, young or old. Not often does a novel hook me from the first page, but this one did, and it didn't let me go, even when I finished it. Ruth and Edek, her father, are real to me, and Edek is about the most comical and adorable character I've met. Travel back to Poland with them and recall with them the days of WWII concentration camps. There's never a dull moment. I would love to have a hardback copy, because, unlike most books, I know I'll want to read this one over and over through the years. At last: literature! Congratulations and many thanks to Lily Brett. And a plea for her to let us share more in the lives of Ruth and Edek.
To Many Men.......2004-01-29
I thought this was a great book. I was being pulled into it the entire time. I am looking forward to reading the continueing story in her next novel. Does anyone know when that book will be published?
Excellent.......2004-01-02
It is too bad that Lily Brett is not better known in the US. This is an excellent easy-to-read and engaging book. I look forward to reading all of her other books.

This is the fifth novel in Orson Scott Card's popular Alvin the Maker series, based on an alternate America where some people are born with knacks, which resemble magical abilities. The protagonist of the series, Alvin, is a maker who not only can fix things (such as restoring a wounded bird to health with his doodlebug) but is also something of a natural leader. Alvin and his small band of followers are on a quest to build the Crystal City, a place where those who have knacks can live in safety from the people who sometimes burn them as witches. While Alvin visits the nearly holy province of New England to find out just how cities work, his wife Margaret, traveling under the name Peggy, journeys to the kingdom of Camelot, which was formerly known as Charleston, South Carolina. There she hopes to persuade the exiled King Arthur to help her abolish the practice of slavery. Heartfire is an excellent midseries novel that's sure to delight fans of Alvin. --Craig E. Engler
Book Description
Peggy is a Torch, able to see the fire burning in each person's heart. She can follow the paths of each person's future, and know each person's most intimate secrets. From the moment of Alvin Maker's birth, when the Unmaker first strove to kill him, she has protected him.Now they are married, and Peggy is a part of Alvin's heart as well as his life. But Alvin's destiny has taken them on separate journeys. Alvin has gone north into New England, where knacks are considered witchcraft, and their use is punished with death.Peggy has been drawn south, to the British Crown Colonies and the court of King Arthur Stuart in exile. For she has seen a terrible future bloom in the heartfires of every person in America, a future of war and destruction. One slender path exists that leads through the bloodshed, and it is Peggy's quest to set the world on the path to peace.

Great Book.......2007-04-05
It's getting colse to the end and I don't want it to end. Great book.
Alvin has lost his way.......2006-12-13
Card spends two thirds of the book exchanging banter between characters, none of which advance plot or advance character development. We then end up with Alvin waiting around in jail (again) and an impending courtcase (again). Oh woe the day Verily Cooper was introduced so Card could stick his books into a court case to explain what he wants to tell us.
I loved the 1st 3 books, was okay with the 4th book (but only okay), and this book made me angry. And this book did little, if anything, to advance the overall story arc of The Tales Of Alvin Maker.
Incomprehensible and I am a fan!.......2005-07-12
Incomprehensible. I am an absolute fan of Orson Scott Card, anything he writes I will pick up to read. But this book stopped me cold. Based on the premise of the book, knack's that are almost magical, I should have loved it. But the quality of the prose plummeted in this book. I just didn't' get it
Not as good as the previous books in the series.......2004-02-18
I originally read this when it first came out, then re-read the series when I got the new book (The Crystal City) for Christmas. This one was not as good as the other books in this series.
The story started off very slow, with a lot of nonsense about Arthur Staurt and Audobon (who could have been left out of the book completely) and birds. While this was explained somwhat at the end of the book, it was still too much and too slow. The book does get better near the end, but by that time, there has been too much junk preceeding it to make it seem worthwhile. The dialogue between Denmark and Gullah Joe is particularly boring and painful to read.
I give this book three stars only because of the characters, which are still great, and the ongoing story of Alvin's quest to build the Crystal City, but it wasn't a great story on its own. If you've read the other books in the series, this one is worth reading just to continue the story, but just barely. I hope the next book can return to the great stories from the previous books, if not, then I hope it will at least be the last in this series.
Bad, Bad Cover Art.......2004-02-13
I would have given this book an additional star if it wasn't for the terrible art on the cover. I was embarrassed to read this novel in public. The marketing for this series really cheapens the writing. My friends laugh at me when I show them these books, then insist they are good. I would never buy such an ugly book in hardcover. Get with the times, TOR.
Customer Reviews:
Intense !.......2000-08-01
You can't go wrong with any book by Georgina Gentry! I have been tracking down and reading her out of print books ever since I read her first book! You can usually find her out of print books in used book stores or Amazon.com's auction resources, etc. "Half-breed's Bride" grabs you in the first chapter and never lets you go! It is more intense than most of Georgina Gentry's books (but, not quite as much historical background as usual). Everyone has secrets in this book! The reader finds out the secrets little by little. All of the characters in this story are extremely strong and unforgettable. The story is exciting and very lustful as it takes you through a journey of human character (black, white, and grey).
Wonderful!!.......1998-11-30
I know this book is no longer published but I have to write on it. This is a wonderful book! Every character has a secret that entwines with one large secret. And as the book procedes a little bit of the secret it dolled out. I found the book fascinating and could not put it down until I read every last word. Some of the characters are not as bad as the appear and some are worse. It is for you to jusge.

A great romance.......1999-05-07
This is a story of a love that really moves the reader. I have read a few romances and found them to be mostly the same. However this story gives real hope to someone waiting to find love or someone like me whose husband is away with the military. The love between Cathrine and Hugh is a powerful one and I highly recommend it.

Item received is not as described.......2006-05-26
The item I received from Amazon is not what is described here. Despite the banner on the front of this book and in the image stating "8 pages of color photographs", the photos were very poor quality black and white photocopies. This was true for all 3 of the Babylon 5 season books that had photos. I am not even convinced that the text in any of the 5 books is not just photocopy as well. I paid full cover price and purchased directly from Amazon. After sending a complaint and asking how to get the correct item, Amazon immediately sent another set. These too were defective black and white photocopies. Although the book itself appears to be interesting, I would buy it from a book store and not purchase it unseen through Amazon.
A Great Guide to a Great Series.......2004-01-22
Babylon 5 was unique in television. The main plot for the entire series was mapped out before the show even started. As a result, it developed a loyal fan base that still loves it.
This book is the fourth in a series of five episode guides to the series. Covering the fourth season, it has a separate chapter for each of the twenty-two episodes. Each starts with a plot summary, but then goes into behind the scenes stories and commentaries. Through interviews with cast, crew, and creator J. Michael Straczynski, author Jane Killick is able to give a full picture of what went into each episode. Some of my favorite parts are the stories of bloopers or jokes the cast played on each other. I also find the summaries useful if I'm looking for a particular episode to rewatch. Because the season finale was filmed as late (as part of the fifth season production schedule), it only has a summary here. The behind the scenes stuff was included in the book for season 5, however.
Starting out the book are two essays. The first provides a detailed account of the making of any episode. Every part is discussed from scriptwriting to pre-production, scheduling, post filming special effects, and the music of the show. The second in an introduction to the fourth season, painting broad strokes of the story arcs introduced and developed over the course of the season.
Any fan will love to have this well researched book for a behind the scenes look at a wonderful piece of science fiction television history.
Essential Reading for the B5 Viewer.......2002-11-07
The Babylon 5: Season by Season guidebooks are an essential read for fans of the TV series. Containing photos, interviews, essays, and in-depth rundowns of each episode, each book is indispensable for B5 vets and newbies alike. Strongly recommended.
A great book series, but if you are new to the show..........2001-10-24
This is a really good book series for B5 fans. It makes a great companion & fun reading after you have watched each show. But I would recommend it mainly for those that have seen the series & are watching it again. The reason I say that is because it is laced with spoilers all throughout the commentaries. That's fine if you've seen the whole thing already, but it stinks if you are watching it for the first time. If you don't mind that sort of thing...go for it, but this is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. For a good "non-spoiler" companion guide, I highly recommend The Babylon File: The Definitive Unauthorized Guide to J. Michael Straczynski's TV Series Babylon 5 by Andy Lane (Versions 1 & 2). He shows no mercy sometimes. If he does or doesn't like the show, he let's you know. But it's a blast to read.
A must have for any fan--serious or casual.......2000-01-25
All of Jane Killick's season guides are fantastic, and "No Surrender, No Retreat" is no exception. Each guide features complete episode listings; cast, guest stars, writers, directors, in other words the works. The episodes are synopisized (fully, don't read if you don't want to be spoiled) and contain interviews with the cast and crew. Killick's synopses are to the point, and bring out each storyline from the beginning, so even a casual viewer who hasn't seen key episodes can get filled in on who is after whom and which Vorlon is which. My favorite parts are the essay at the beginning of the books explaining specific pieces of the season's storyline and behind-the-scenes fun.
This book needs to be read in context with Jane Killick's other 4 episode guides.

I found this book to be an excellent read of the Babylon 5 Season 4 overview. Each of the seasons episodes is discussed and extra info about various people and organizations in the B5 universe is detailed. I found it to be helpful and an enjoyable read that added new details and facts to my knowledge on the B5 universe.

Accessible.......2006-03-03
This dictionary on Classical Mythology, i.e. Greek and Roman, is incredibly accessible to any level of reader. The information is presented clearly with just enough detail for clarity. A reader does not need to be well versed on a given character or story to gain great insight from this text.
The only reason give this book 4 stars is not because of the material presented, but the materials used to produce the book. Like most books of this type, they are value priced. As a result, the materials can be sub-par. In the copy that I have, the pages are overly thin and the print bled through in some places.
Better than other dictionaries of Classical Mythology.......2000-04-14
I think P. Grimal's dictionary(hardcovered one) is the best among many encyclopedias or dictionaries of Greek and Roman Mythology . But I can not say this translation is the best , because there are many mistakes and some omitted entries. If you can read French , I recommend to read the original "DICTIONNAIRE DE LA MYTHOLOGIE GREQUE ET ROMAINE" written by P. Grimal himself. Although English-version has these weak points, as far as I know , only this book and William Smith's old "Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography & Mythology" are worth to read with Greek alphabet spelling of proper noun et sourses of Classical texts.

Quickie Classical Reference Book.......2007-02-27
This is an excellent little reference book for the ancient Greco-Roman Classical world. Great for the student of ancient history or mythology or for classical allusions in literature or political science made to this day.
An invaluable reference!.......1998-04-16
This book offers invaluable references for travel, literature art...heck, even songs by Sting! I purchased my first copy while in art school where I couldn't keep straight all of the tales of love, betrayal and revenge in the ancient world. After four months in Italy and Greece it is worn, torn and lovingly wine stained, but it has served me well. I used it to decipher names on structures in the Roman Forum and to reveal the meaning of paintings in the Ufizzi. Without it my travels would not have been nearly as rich.
