Book Description
o behind the scenes of Edward Zwick's (Legends of the Fall, Glory) powerful epic set during Japan's turbulent movement away from a feudal society and into a modern nation. Tom Cruise stars as Captain Nathan Algren, battle-scarred Civil War veteran turned Winchester gun spokesman, who travels to Japan in 1876 to train the emperor's troops. With his western-trained troops in place, Emperor Meiji plans to sever ties with the traditional samurai warriors who protect the territories. But during combat, Algren is wounded and captured by the samurai. And it is while in captivity that he discovers the warrior code of honor and undergoes a spiritual transformation that will align him with the very samurai he was sent to quell.

Putting things in perspective.......2004-06-15
The movie The Last Samurai as a history is problematic. the movie places a white man -- in this case, an american -- at the center of a rather significant period in Japanese history -- the Meiji era. In reality, the americans did not figure that signficantly -- at that time -- in altering Japanese history and there was no "Dances with Wolves" type scenario and the Emperor never received audiences as per the movie.
This illustrated "making of" is valuable in that it situates the historical "realities" as per the movie and sets things in perspective. In particular, the section on Saigo Takamori and the Satsuma Rebellion (34-5) and codification of the Bushido (60-61) show a more concrete Japan sans the exotic. What both the movie and the book fail to explore is the Iwakura Mission of 1871 where Prince Iwakura Tomomi sets out to learn from the best of the best all over the world in an effort to stave of being the meal rather than the guest to the colonial banquet.
As a commentary to the movie it is excellent. A great coffee table book and a step in the right direction.

Great Companion Guide to the Movie.......2004-04-06
I believe this film was highly underated and didnt get the recoqnition it deserved. The book was magnificent. Great color pictures and photo shots from the movie. Great behind the scenes look at the making of the movie and the history of the Samurai class in feudal Japan. Buy the book if you liked the Movie...I sure did.
A masterpiece just like the movie........2004-02-18
This book is filled with magnificent photographs and information of history contained throughout the film, along with behind the scenes info. The book also contains segments of the movie script.
An excellent companion to the outstanding movie.
Gorgeous, but............2003-12-22
Exactly who is this Colonel Covington?
As a decade-long resident of Colorado and reenactor, I can't believe such a beautiful book as this would seemingly slip as to give a name to a person who never existed.
I am familiar with Col. John M. Chivington, the Butcher of Sand Creek, and his bloody troop. It is hard to NOT know of this fiend who used his faith to justify outright slaughter. Wars need to be fought among soldiers, not towards innocents. Ah, but I digress.
I would have much wished that the folks at Time Inc. had caught this typo before these books were sent to press. It would have made all the difference to preserve the integrity of this book.
At least from a historical perspective.
My view is petty in light of this book's appeal. Forgive my mentioning the point but it is the only thing that marred my looking through it and savoring its images and glimpse into the film.
I found some mistakes........2003-12-19
Yes, this is a good movie book. This book helps American people to understand Japanese history, which this movie is based on.
However, I found some mistakes in the Japanese translation. For example, the definition of Ashigaru and Kote are totally wrong. (Ashigaru should be Yabusame, and Kote is glove.)
I am really disappointed about these mistakes, because the movie is excellent and I could feel that all the staff tried to make everything authentic.
But overall, this book helps people to understand the different culture, which even new Japanese generation like me sometimes feel difficult to understand.
Book Description
The London Daily Express called this first full study of Vivienne Westwood's work as a groundbreaking fashion designer "a delight for any followers of fashion." More than 200 illustrations present Westwood's dynamic fashions; outfits worn by the Sex Pistols contrast with more recent creations for Sarah Jessica Parker and Cameron Diaz, showing why Westwood is one of the most talked-about designers in the world. More than 25,000 copies of the hardcover edition of this book have been sold worldwide.
Book Description
Dame of the British Empire Vivienne Westwood is best known for her provocative SEX/Seditionaries boutique on Kings Road, and then perhaps her runway shows. Her shoes recently got a hit of mass-market retail power when she did a limited edition collection for a partnership including Nine West, Macy's and Vogue. Westwood was comparatively reserved in that work, but for other venues, her bulbous, curving platform soles sometimes grow to NBA-qualifying heights. This is the first book to gather Westwood's shoe designs, every one of them--140 examples, including the infamous platform that felled Naomi Campbell--from 1973 to the present day. Newly commissioned color photography documents each model, and detailed reporting explains their history, laying bare the designer's sources of inspiration and working practices. Vivienne Westwood Shoes includes a biography and chronology of the designer's life and work, most recently her 25th year of runway shows, a first major retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and designs for the rich and famous--from Tracey Emin to Cameron Diaz. It's essential reading and window-shopping for all fashion hounds, shoe fetishists and fans of the Queen of British design, who is at once the one of the greatest living British fashion designers and the most talked-about.

All Hail Dame Vivienne Westwood.......2007-03-10
For lovers of Vivienne Westwood, this is a beautiful book showing off full page color photos of many of her artistic and lovely shoes. This book is 189 pages and almost all photographs. The book has gold leafed page edging and a protective clear cover. Vivienne Westwood Shoes is a lovely tribute to Ms. Westwood and a beautiful collectors item or gift for lovers of her work.

Juicy!.......2007-02-12
A total page-turner with seamy details-- for example, she sent her son away to boarding school at a tender age because he got on (self-obsessed jackass) Malcolm McLauren's nerves. Even if you have no interest in her as a designer, this book is one fascinating read!
Read this it is great!!!.......2005-03-27
This book made me a fan of this writer, he has a totally original approach to biography writing. It is achingly funny and in some bits brilliantly insightful, in others it moves you along like a very peculiar adventure story, which is just what Mrs Westwoods life was like after all. I read that her brother threatened to punch Mr Vermorel on the nose over this book which says it all since this book is a punch on the nose for all those sycophants that are always surrounding the lady. In an interview I also read he said he write it to annoy the Guardian. I got more knowledge that seemed more real about the 60s here than all the clichés that usually are served up. Seems the only thing that swung in those legendary days was Mick Jaggers jockstrap!!!

A note form Maureen Farquhar.......2000-03-09
Short and very sweet. This brief book is entertaining. If you like Vivienne Westwood then this is the first book that I would advise you to buy. It is insightful and has some fantastic colour plates. The downfall of some of the other books about Westwood (eg. Fred Vermorel) is that they have too few images, which is bizarre as fashion is about visibility. ciao,
Maureen Farquhar
Pictures don't represent quality.......2000-02-27
I had high hopes for this book. There isn't enough out there to visually represent the work of Westwood. These pictures catalogue her work from the early 70's to her latest collections, but none are of high quality decent enough to compliment her outstanding and truly creative visions. Better to spend your money on the "Universe of Fashion" book on her, or if you're looking for literature, check out "Unfashionable Life" by Jane Mulvagh.
Westwood is the Queen- Galliano,-the king-and they connect.........1999-02-24
I loved this book because Gene's the bomb-he worked at worldsend and then later lived in the Chelsae in NYC & designed his own great stuff influenced by the Marx Bros. I want another copy Gene-and thanks for all those years in that crazy backward-clocked, ship-wrecked floors and I miss Piracy, Bow Wow wow, Les Incroyables of Galliano's 1st st martin's collection- i miss The mud of NOSTALGIA OF MUD-the world tour with the Supreme Team- but metaphorically speaking it is like the 2 in that early Balloon 1785-there was the Duke D'Arlandres & there was Pilatre de Rozier- Funny how the latter was more CAREFUL"STOP looking at the lake below-or we shall be in it-well de Rozier died ayear later accidentally mixing gases whilst crossing the English channel-but, Westwood, like the flying aristocrat continues to navigate fASHION'S EPHEMERAL CLOUDS...... i miss this period & would adore e mailing others who share my historical fascinations and their relation to the turn of the century PS thanks gene 4 showing me how to do a deeper push -up in your Chelsea room with those push-up bars i still own!!!!! doremesa@home.com

Shave The Whales!.......2002-08-19
While this is the 4th Dilbert book, it is the 2nd book of strips from the newspaper, following "Always Postpone Meetings With Time-Wasting Mornons". The strips in this book are from the end of 1989 through mid-1990. Some characters of note introduced in this book are the Garbage Man (who is a member of MENSA) and Ratbert. Also, the famous fictional country of Elbonia makes it's first appearance. People will see characters that look a lot like Wally but aren't called that as Wally wasn't established yet. The humor picks up with more business related strips and the artwork tightens up a bit. A good book for laughs and light reading.
You Won't be dissapointed!.......2002-06-16
Just as funny as all the other hillarious Dilbert books. Gte this one to start your Dilbert Collection or make it bigger. This book os a must read just like all of the other dilbert books so BUY IT
Shave the Whales-Another Excellent Book!.......2001-12-26
Shave the Whales is another Dilbert masterpiece! These strips were in the older Dilbert days, so there were more comics with just Dilbert and Dogbert. However, the pointy-haired boss started becoming more of a character, and some office jokes are featured. It is a great book for any Dilbert fan! It is filled with wit, humor, and incompetent management. A wonderful book!
Scott Adams Does It Again!.......2001-11-15
I have never been disappointed with anything written by Scott Adams and this is no exception. This is a collection of some of the older strips featuring our office hero Dilbert dishing out some sarcasm and much-loved puns. If you are a Dilbert fan like I am, this is a must have for your collection. I laughed hysterically and then laughed some more; I shared it with my friends and they laughed; then I silently cheered as Dilbert sticks it to the PHB as all of us wish we could. Hats off to Scott!
Good Book.......2000-03-30
As another member if the DNRC, I claim, the other two induhviduals in this list (if you can't easily spot them, I claim you also) to help me when my car is stuck in the mud: "hey, buddy there is a whale under my car if you want it"

SHAVE THE WHALES
SCOTT ADAMS

Book Description
Ayun Halliday may not make for the most sensible travel companion, but she is certainly one of the zaniest, with a knack for inserting herself (and her unwitting cohorts) into bizarre situations around the globe. Curator of kitsch and unabashed aficionada of pop culture, Halliday offers bemused, self-deprecating narration of events from guerilla theater in Romania to drug-induced Apocalypse Now reenactments in Vietnam to a perhaps more surreal collagen-implant demonstration at a Paris fashion show emceed by Lauren Bacall. From taming the wild dog packs of Bali to requiring the services of a bonesetter in Sumatra, Ayun Halliday offers up the best of her itinerant foibles as examples of how not to travel abroad. For instance, on layover in Amsterdam, Halliday finds unlikely trouble in the red-light district—eliciting the ire of a tiny, violent madam,—and is forced to explain tampons, which she admits, “might have looked like white cotton bullets lined up in their box,” to soldiers in Kashmir—“They’re for ladies. Bleeding ladies.” A self-admittedly bumbling vacationer, Halliday shares—with razorsharp wit and to hilarious effect—the travel stories most are too self-conscious to tell.
Customer Reviews:
Mundane travels from years past.......2007-07-04
This is a travel memoir of backpacking journeys she did years before she married her husband Greg and had two kids. That explains why the stories are superficial and mostly about her misadventures. There is very little detail about the people around her, or the terrain around her, (and nothing of historical significance) but certainly a lot about herself. If you are drunk or high reading her stories, perhaps you may get a chuckle, but otherwise the read is rather mundane because the focus is on her rather than the travel.
Still, it's not a bad read. This book is a collection of her pot-smoking days traveling around Europe and Asia on her parents' money and having a great time with friends she stays with. There's nothing wrong with that kind of travel at all. It's just not very exciting to read about and not in par with better travel writers.
If you enjoy traveling via Lonely Planet books, this book is for you. If you want clues on how to smuggle pot across African borders, or want to know where the cheapest doobie is in Asia, this book is for you.
Perhaps talking about washing one's "malodorous vagina" in a public restroom in Germany may offend some prudish readers.
My only complaint is that Ayun wrote about the Amazon reviews on her website (which is mentioned on the backcover of the book) on 16 March 2007. That explains why the last three reviews before mine were five-star reviews with little substance. That I find a bit sophomoric. Really Ayun, do you need to do that to get your book ratings up? You are a talent in your own right. You HAVE done better and this is not your better work.
Great read! And i hate to read!.......2007-06-02
i have a slight and manageable learning disability that makes reading a bit of a chore, so if a book doesn't hold my interest, i don't read it. and i read this book start to finish and enjoyed every bit of it with the exception of the author's too-evocative description of her dislocated knee (perhaps because i'm a nurse it was too easy visualize).
anyway.........
the style is fluid and friendly, the stories are alternately funny andevocative and it's got the ability to create the 'you were there' feeling necessary to distinguish one travel book from the hundreds of travel books written by people who shouldn't write travel books.
Best praise i can offer: i'm now going to search out her other books
Ayun rules!.......2007-03-21
I just love Ayun's books. She cracks me up every darn time. I give this book to my friends who love to travel. And they all love it. I wouldn't call the humor high brow, but if you like David Sedaris or Anne Lamott, then you are on the right track. There aren't many books I would read more than once, but I have re-read books by all 3 authors. Have fun reading this one!
charming, smart, hellafunny.......2007-03-20
I'm tempted to cast aspersions upon the previous reviewers and their clearly crap taste in writing, but I suppose I should concentrate how awesome these essays are. And maybe that's the thing the other reviewers didn't get: these are essays, personal essays in the style of a David Sedaris or Sarah Vowell--not a humor column, not genre travel writing. After reading this book, I bought all Ayun Halliday's other books and subscribed to her zine.
Disappointing.......2007-03-17
I saw someone reading this on the train. Great title, great cover, great idea.
Poorly executed. I guess I expected something like "Dave Barry Travels Abroad," but this book wasn't nearly as cuttingly clever as it thought it was. The vaginal references were embarrassing more than amusing, and a lot of the bathroom humor made me cringe more than laugh. It read more like a self-indulgent travel journal by someone's teenage kid trying to sound worldly and adult. It had some good bits, but not a book's worth.
