5 out of 5 stars Several quick reads as an Ayn Rand Appetizer or a dessert after The Fountainhead.......2007-04-23

The stories in this book all have the same qualities as the books Ayn Rand wrote during her mature years: that life can and should be an adventure ("Good Copy"), that men have a great capacity for heroism ("Red Pawn"), that no man can escape the consequences of his philosophy ("Think Twice"). If you've been curious about Ayn Rand but hesitant to take on reading one of her large books (Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead) then try reading a couple of these short stories. If you enjoy them, you probably won't be able to wait to get started reading one of her books! If you've already enjoyed reading one of her books, these stories will give you a few more hours to spend with her and her ideas.

Book Description

A New Quest Begins

A dragonkeeper of Paladin, Kale is summoned from the Hall to The Bogs by the Wizard Fenworth to serve as his apprentice and tend his newly hatched meech dragon, Regidor. But Kale isn’t going alone. The Hall is sending a student to monitor her performance and report back to the scholars. Worst of all, it’s Bardon–an older boy Kale finds irritating, but who at least can hold his own in a sword fight.

New Friendships Are Forged

Meanwhile, the Wizard Risto has seized another meech dragon, bringing him dangerously close to gaining the power he seeks. So with only a motley band of companions, Kale sets out on a desperate quest to rescue the second meech, to free those dragons already enslaved, and to thwart Risto’s devious plans. It’s up to Kale to lead the search and to embrace the role that’s rightfully hers. But will her efforts be enough to save the land of Amara from the dark future that awaits at Risto’s hands?

4 out of 5 stars Anyone hear that crunching sound?.......2007-03-11

The sound of words being eaten, eaten away.

Confession time: I made several negative comments in my review of DragonSpell (which I still agree with). But I also made several predictions, negative ones, and I have to say I was completely wrong.

I could tell by the first page of this book that Ms. Paul's writing style had improved. I could tell about twenty pages in that her characterization had improved. And I could tell about fifty pages in that this book had a really, really compelling plot. Best of all, the "moral dilemma" I had so begged for had come, too, with Kale's mother number 1 and mother number 2.

Did I mention there was a lot more humor, too, which is always nice with Christian fiction?

Dar is better, funny and loyal. Kale is better, smart and interesting. Two new dragons are introduced. The meech egg from Book 1 is back, almost fully grown, and there's another meech dragon too, a female in bondage to the evil guy, Risto. And the protagonists being who they are, they must rescue her.

And -- wait for it -- this book actually has a BATTLE at the end! A real one! Involving real danger!

Quite exciting. I was hoping DragonQuest would be better, I really was, because the premise of the series had so much potential, and I'm always up for reading Christian fiction as long as it isn't too preachy. The preachiness died in this book. Granted, it's obvious that it IS Christian fiction. But the characters aren't robots who spew Paladin's teachings all over the place (or, in non-fantasy Christian fiction, robots who become Christians and a week later know fifty Bible verses by heart). They're real, flawed, funny people.

Why, then, did I give it only four stars?

Well, there are little annoying details such as some awkward dialogue, confusing scenes, and just an edge of predictability. (Though, in all fairness, I was surprised when it was discovered that the dragons really hadn't deserted after all.)

So, of course it wasn't perfect -- but what is? It was compelling, and MUCH better than the first, so I'll be borrowing DragonKnight as soon as I can.

5 out of 5 stars great sequel!.......2006-05-18

I've always loved anything that has to do with dragons, so when i saw DragonSpell i wanted to read it, when i finished it, i was sad that i had. you know that feeling when you're coming to the end of the book and your happy your gonna finish it, but your sad that you are gonna finish it? yeah, thats how i felt. when i finished it, i looked into the author, and learn a little more about, to find out she already wrote two more! i was so happy, and imediatelly ordered DragonQuest. It is a great story, but if you haven't read the first one, you're going to be clueless. lol I can't wait to read what happens to Bardon and Kale in the next one, DragonKnight! BYE

5 out of 5 stars Captivates fantasy lovers!.......2006-03-29

Kale and her friends return in this mesmerizing sequel to DragonSpell. Two weeks into her training at the Hall, Kale, a dragonkeeper for Paladin, is summoned to help the aging Wizard Fenworth with the meech dragon she quickened. Two minor dragons and a furry young street urchin are already under her care, but there's also an irksome someone to report on her and train her to defend herself - Bardon, a structured older boy called the Snitch behind his back.

Facing danger even to get to Fenworth's, the group soon finds that their journey is only beginning. The evil Wizard Risto has seized another meech to further his plans of taking over Amara. As they travel to free dragons already enslaved by Risto's influence, the mystery surrounding the mother Kale never knew begins to be hampered by more questions.

Rich in adventure, deep in insight, and filled with the intriguing creative touches that fantasy readers love, this book is a must-read for all ages. Seven high races and seven evil races people Amara, portrayed in detail and kept distinct. Multi-dimensional characters become friends you wish you could meet. Dragons permeate the story like a flock of tropical birds, with vivid coloring and varied personalities. The author also adds mind-speaking abilities, wizardry, gateways to travel long distances instantly, and a cloak with pockets that don't bulge, but these elements are only frosting to deeper issues like trust and discipline. A twisting and suspenseful plot finishes the novel on a high note but leaves room for sequels to come. The Dragonkeeper Chronicles are books sure to captivate every lover of fantasy. - Katie Hart, Christian Book Previews.com

5 out of 5 stars Obscure cosmic relationships and unnameable realities behind the protective illusions of common vision.......2006-06-19

If you want really classic Lovecraft at the top of his form, then this novel is it. It is a good, tight, driven read- except for the extensive prose tour of his beloved old Providence near the beginning. Yet, even this detailed introduction helps to weave an unmatched atmosphere that draws you deeply into Lovecraft's world. This is an ode to Providence, and to those unobtrusive and unlikely heroes that would keep it safe from cosmic evil.

Lovecraft carries us from colonial days to the "modern" 1920's in this tale. We are introduced to the hidden brotherhood of dark magicians and necromancers- those to seek to wield unnatural power from beyond the grave and beyond the stars. So much concentrated occult information, or rather enticing hints of such information, is packed into the narrative. Mystery within mystery unfolds. Yet, it is rather ordinary men that are called upon to confront this inconceivable evil, even though it threatens their very sanity.

Besides being an extremely well written tale of supernatural suspense it also serves as a teaching tale. There is madness out of time and a horror from beyond the spheres that threatens to entrap and destroy the unwary. Do not call up what ye lack the power to put down. Upon this depends more than can be put into words- all civilization, all natural law, perhaps the fate of the solar system and the universe. Perhaps even more than this- all because one fool opened a door and there was no one there with the knowledge to close it...

5 out of 5 stars Horror at its best.......2005-10-11

This is the type of story that you sit back and imerse yourself in the setting. With each new tid bit of information the horror of Joseph Curwen becomes clearer and clearer. The final chapter however sent chills down my spine, as Dr Willet searches through Curwen's undergroud, antedeluvian laboratory. The dank putrid odors, the slime green walls, and the horrific wailing from the darkness... the build up is phenominal, and the pay off will have you sleeping with your lights on!

Great read, you will go back to it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Lovecraft at his best.......2005-01-15

Charles Dexter Ward is a young man in Providence, RI who is fascinated by antiquities --- too fascinated, perhaps. He becomes obsessed with an ancestor, an alleged warlock named Joseph Curwen who escaped persecution in Salem over 200 years before and fled to Providence. A unusually long-lived ancestor, I might add.

If you aren't used to reading Lovecraft, or other writers of the same time period, the language and writing style might be a little tough at first, but it is well worth getting into. Lovecraft leaves a lot to the imagination of the reader --- a device that works quite well in this story.

This is one of my favorite novellas --- actually, one of my favorite stories, even. I first read when I was in high school, and I have re-read it every few years ever since. I re-read it again a couple of days ago and I still love it. This is Lovecraft at his best.

          5 out of 5 stars Lovecraft's Masterpiece.......2004-06-19

At 48,000 words, this is the longest tale that H.P. Lovecraft ever wrote. It is also his best.

This novel has both good plotting and an otherworldly atmosphere that pervades the book. The setting is 1920's New England where there was a revival in interest in the occult. However, the key to the tale is the 18th Century New England scene that Lovecraft had a lifetime interest in.

The character of Charles Dexter Ward was based on Lovecraft himself: a lonely intellectual who was an antiquarian who detested the Industrial Revolution. Ward's research into the occult leads to the reincarnation of one of his ancestors who in turn hatches a plot with both Ward and one of Ward's friends for a mass resurrection of the dead who would become mindless zombies dedicated to both the destruction of heavy industry in America as well as the forced expulsion, if not mass murder, of the Roman Catholic immigrants who Lovecraft detested so much from America.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is a fantasy/horror novel that tells you a lot about its author. H.P. Lovecraft was a self-styled aristocrat from a decadent Old Money family who bitterly hated the Roman Catholic Church and especially the Irish and Italian immigrants who by 1928, when this novel was first published, had already assumed a position of political power at the expense of the WASP elite that Lovecraft was a member of. Clearly, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward was reflective of Lovecraft's religious bigotry and his hateful tendencies towards certain ethnic and religious groups. It should come as no surprise that during the 1930's, Lovecraft frequently praised Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is a uniquely powerful and compelling work by a master of horror fantasy.

          4 out of 5 stars Obsolete Viewpoint.......2004-04-16

The impact of this novel is materially diminished by its reliance on obsolete paradigms of the previous century. Science seeks to reanimate creatures of the past not with incantations, wall inscriptions and the usual mumbo gumbo of witchcraft and sorcery, but with the information storing capacity of DNA macromolecules and cellular implants. In Lovecraft's works, as in certain scriptural references, matter is endowed only with minimal capacities to create the inorganic realm - but living creatures need to have the influence of nonmaterial spiritual influences from BEYOND. Lovecraft hints at methods and materials used in the "experiments" he describes, but relies too heavily on "fancy" language to create atmosphere...a practice losing its impact after frequent repetition. His work would have proved prophetic if he invisioned the capacity of inanimate matter to link free energy with self-organizing potential. Beyond these failures of prescience, the novel also exhibits artistic failures: the plot develops much too slowly......the material would have fit more comfortably in a short story or a novelette....... it seems H. P. might have started writing a handbook for tour guides of Providence, R. I. and took a sudden turn on Route 2 in Cranston - that excursion being included is an obvious diversion from the main story line. The reader might also consider an amusing thought postcard of the of the REAL Providence and its appeal - consisting until recent times - mainly of sidewalk art of prostrate bodies, crowds of pan-handling bums, or rats scurrying about freely in daylight along the canal. In spite of these comments I would recommend this book. Read this volume and then go for a walk in the environs described therein ---watch out for ..."shunned culverts, hideously dark - wherein lurk formless masses rubbing softly in the depths...evoking delerious thoughts of sodden, ravenous rats....."

2 out of 5 stars Just a book about the author's previous book.......2007-07-13

In my opinion this book does not offer much new spiritually after the author's first book "Embraced by the Light", but rather it gives some insight into her publishing the book.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond the Bible.......2007-04-21

For the person/s worried that the bible and Christianity are diminished in this book, its message goes well beyond the bible and religions. Love embraces all religions yet exceeds all of them in its magnificent majesty. That universality and common humanity are the very fabric of what Eadie is discussing. Namaste...

2 out of 5 stars The Awakening Heart: My Continueing Journey to Love.......2007-03-03

I loved Betty Eadie's first book. It was excellent. But this book was uncomfortable for me as a Christian. It seemed she was getting into areas that were unbiblical. I know she is a Christian, but she is mixing new age with her Christianity. I feel that if you are a Christian, you may want to skip this book. It is not as good as her Embraced by the Light. I finally threw the book away when it conflicted SO MUCH with the Bible. I couldn't take any more. Book 1, Embraced by the Light is pretty good. Read and get the good and spit out the bones.

4 out of 5 stars The Awakening Heart - Review by Trish New, author of The Thrill of Hope and South State Street Journal.......2006-12-22

The beginning of the book reiterates some of the content of Eadie's first book, "Embraced by The Light." She continues to discuss how her near death vision affected her life. "Often our dreams are full of symbolism, but they are our own symbols, some so uniquely our own that only the dreamer has the key to them," Eadie says. And as dreams are for the dreamer, visions are for the envisioned. She says it best herself, " All of my interests had changed, and I was painfully aware that my life before had been very shallow. I had a new interest now, an unquenchable thirst for greater spiritual knowledge, but I didn't know where to find it. Old friends stopped coming by; the things we had shared before--gossip sessions, parties, shopping, and, of course, the afternoon soaps--no longer held any interest for me. I had never felt more alone in my entire life." Eadie relates how before she had kept her room off limits to her children so that she could keep it clean and keep her treasures without fear of the children breaking them. The children would stand in the doorway gazing into the forbidden room. Now she invites the children in where the room is a family sanctuary. She said her ego had played a larger part in the way she was raising her children and she needed to undo the damage she had done. She did not know what to do with the knowledge she had been given and felt lost and alone. She painted the walls of the house bright colors. She lost her hearing in one ear and became depressed and experienced anxiety attacks and agoraphobia but eventually became interested in serving others and in researching herbs. She experienced visits of angels with lights and singing. She experienced incidents in which she was not kind to people and was puzzled since she thought she would not behave in such a way after her near-death experience. She heard voices telling her to pray and decided that it was for herself and perceived God as a father figure. She was separated from parents and spent her childhood in boarding schools and said she did not experience unconditional love. Eadie began to experience enhanced ability to read other people and describes it as cellular memory. She awakened to her Native American ancestry. She experienced praying what she calls the mother's prayer she had seen during her near death experience and described as beacons of light reaching into heaven. She experienced other times when family needs were radical and says that prayer is the greatest gift we have for any situation. She became angry with God when her father, husband and son were all afflicted at the same time as if God had been responsible. She attended a hypnotherapy session with a friend and decided it was her calling. She received certification and set up her own clinic and gave presentations about her near death experience. The most touching part of the book is the dream she had concerning her father's death. A person's consciousness that causes them to dream scenes of the future is indeed phenomenal. Eadie relates the details of how she wrote the first book Embraced by The Light and the phobias she had to overcome in speaking and presenting her vision to audiences. She speaks often of the ripple effect which is the fact that everything we do has some effect on many people. She speaks about unconditional love in this way: "It doesn't matter whether we wear a cross around our necks or make the sign of the cross or light candles. Whatever manner in which we choose to communicate with God is not important; these are the mechanical touchstones that we use in our faith... But what is more important than anything else, ever, is simply that we make that communication with God from the very depths of our heart and, when we share it with another person, that we do so with the purity of spirit of unconditional love." She stresses the importance of being non-judgmental, no matter how diverse a person may seem. "We may see people facing one challenge on top of another and wonder whether they can take one more thing," she states. "Their growth is enhanced by their willingness to take what appear to be negative events and turn them into something very positive. These individuals continue to grow and expand at a tremendous rate, unlike others whose lives just drift along. We can learn from them, and we can grow by sharing our love in support of them... Through my own journeys I have learned that it often seems easier not to move on; even the muck and mire in which we are stuck often seems less fearful and challenging than the unknown path ahead... I have learned always to look for the next door. ...There is no reason to want to stop developing spiritually, because the wonders through each door are more beautiful than the ones before. Our journeys are their own rewards."

I so loved Embraced by the light that I sought out other books by Betty J Eadie. This book gives the message of hope and love, but not like her first book. Still worth reading if you are a fan of Embraced.
