Glad I got it for nothing........2006-12-28
A friend gave me this book when she moved, and I can see why she parted with it so easily. This book took me forever to read; I only finished it because I hate to give up on any book (although I wish I had with this one, life is too short).
The story isn't all that interesting. The writing was not to my liking, and the dialogue was pretty terrible.
I recognized Valerie Frankel's name when I got the book, but don't let that sway you. Dreck is dreck.
Smart Vs. Pretty.......2006-05-07
I read this book to the end hoping that it would get better but it never did. It was so fake it was pathetic. If the "smart" girl was really smart one that is sad because she was anything but smart.
Wicked and fun!.......2006-01-12
Sisters, to this day, compare and determine themselves as either smart or pretty. It's ongoing and will continue to be so. These two sisters are no exception and the bond that grew between them was surprising and wonderful. This is a light-hearted romp of adventures and misadventures of the two girls, trying to keep the family business afloat after the death of their parents. Add an unexpected plot twist and you're on the way to an interesting, fresh and timely approach to mirror today's obsession with "coffee" and relationships.
There's a completely unrealistic moment with an ATM machine that had me howling. That's what good fiction is all about; kept me jazzed and interested to the end.
Valerie Frankel has the right idea. This is the second book I've read of hers; won't be the last. If you're in the mood to laugh, you'll enjoy!
.......soooooooooo disappointing.........................2005-06-20
....at first i was excited to read this book because of the plot at the back of the book..i tought it was very good to read especially who has a sister but when i read it i was very disappointing, and the story is so borring i could'nt understand what the story is all about. But i decided to finish it because im also concern to the writers effort to write such story like that...and the tittle smart vs pretty doesn't fit to the story...
Great Chick Lit with a twist.......2005-04-22
This is a great story of family, drama and love. The title doesn't do the book justice. This isn't your standard humdrum chick lit fluff. This is a story that wraps you into the characters and pulls you through the life of two girls who's parents have died and their attempts to keep the family business running and their own lives from crumbling. A wonderful spring read! I wont say anything about the plot so that you can buy the book and love it as well.

The Company builds planets.
Kin Arad is a high-ranking official of the Company. After twenty-one decades of living, and with the help of memory surgery, she is at the top of her profession. Discovering two of her employees have placed a fossilized plesiosaur in the wrong stratum, not to mention the fact it is holding a placard which reads 'End Nuclear Testing Now', doesn't dismay the woman who built a mountain range in the shape of her initials during her own high-spirited youth.
But then come a discovery of something which did intrigue Kin Arad. A flat earth was something new...

Not Pratchett's best, but still quite good.......2007-07-09
Strata is not up to very high standards of the DiscWorld series novels, but it's still better than what you'll get from most other writers, popular or not. Pratchett is one of a few authors I know I can count on when I HAVE to read something good, and this book does not disappoint in that regard.
What's the relationship to the DiscWorld series? The characters visit a planet that's flat. Period. That's it. Nothing else in the book is even remotely similar to that series. But it doesn't matter. Just understand that you're not going to be reading a DiscWorld related novel, and you'll enjoy this book.
How It All Started..........2007-02-06
Terry Pratchett's Strata, is an early work, that stands on its own as a nice piece of science fiction. The characters are interesting and the plot line is clever. For me, the ending wasn't as crisp as you'd find in his more recent works, but the journey is worth the effort. For those who've read Pratchett's Discworld novels, the novel gives one an early peak at what will become the author's best known works. The disc world here is not the same Discworld of the subsequent novels, but some of the lunacy and wonder of that universe are first glimpsed in Strata. It is a fascinating look at the conception of what will become a place where magic comes alive.
Pre-discworld, but Pratchett at his best!.......2005-06-11
This is the first Terry Pratchett book I ever read, and it led me to keep reading him. This is not a Discworld novel, but equally as inventive. It may not be as funny as the other novels, but it has its own sense of humor and surprises. I highly recommend this if you are already a fan, and I doubly recommend it if you haven't ready any Pratchett yet. This one will get you hooked!
A different Pratchett than you may be used to.......2005-02-04
A scifi/fantasy blend about a jaded planetary designer who gets embroiled in a mission with two very alien aliens to a disc shaped world where magic appears to work, this early work by Terry Pratchett also deftly parodies Larry Niven's Ringworld as well as several fantasy tropes.
This is the first book outside of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett that I have read and it will not be the last. The humor here is more subdued than with the Discworld books but it still is present more or less throughout the story. There is a sense in reading that Pratchett is finding his wings as the book progresses. The begining is a bit rigid, however by the end the author relaxes and the style becomes more playful. It was a pleasure reading this book and I strongly recommend anyone who likes Pratchett's work to give it a try.
Early Pratchett.......2005-01-04
The word "quirky" gets used a lot in descriptions of "Strata". Gee, d'ya think so? Here we start with Kin Arad explaining to a couple amateurs why burying a dinosaur skeleton holding a sign that says "End nuclear testing" in a fake cretacious bog for future generations of paleontologists to finds is a bad idea. Later Kin will join a human transformed into a Kung, which is a really really violent species, and a cannibalistic Shand on a voyage to a huge artificial disc where they get stalked by a raven, employed by Leif Ericson, and almost betrayed by a teleporting demon. Quirky? A little.
The principle problem with "Strata" is that Pratchett seems like he never quite decided what he wanted to do with it. There are moments that are laugh out loud (a bitter and repressed genie comes to mind), but not nearly as many as you would expect in a real Discworld novel. And there's a big slab of far-out science fiction adventure, which as others have remarked is much in the vein of Larry Niven. And there's an ending, which sort of ties together most of what has happened throughout the book, but it's not exactly a knockout. "Strata" shows us a young author finding his legs early in his career, with hints of the greatness to come. Hints, yes, but not that many hints.
Book Description
The first edition of
The Practice of System and Network Administration introduced a generation of system and network administrators to a modern IT methodology. Whether you use Linux, Unix, or Windows, this newly revised edition describes the essential practices previously handed down only from mentor to protégé. This wonderfully lucid, often funny cornucopia of information introduces beginners to advanced frameworks valuable for their entire career, yet is structured to help even the most advanced experts through difficult projects.
The book's four major sections build your knowledge with the foundational elements of system administration. These sections guide you through better techniques for upgrades and change management, catalog best practices for IT services, and explore various management topics. Chapters are divided into The Basics and The Icing. When you get the Basics right it makes every other aspect of the job easier--such as automating the right things first. The Icing sections contain all the powerful things that can be done on top of the basics to wow customers and managers.
Inside, you'll find advice on topics such as
- The key elements your networks and systems need in order to make all other services run better
- Building and running reliable, scalable services, including web, storage, email, printing, and remote access
- Creating and enforcing security policies
- Upgrading multiple hosts at one time without creating havoc
- Planning for and performing flawless scheduled maintenance windows
- Managing superior helpdesks and customer care
- Avoiding the "temporary fix" trap
- Building data centers that improve server uptime
- Designing networks for speed and reliability
- Web scaling and security issues
- Why building a backup system isn't about backups
- Monitoring what you have and predicting what you will need
- How technically oriented workers can maintain their job's technical focus (and avoid an unwanted management role)
- Technical management issues, including morale, organization building, coaching, and maintaining positive visibility
- Personal skill techniques, including secrets for getting more done each day, ethical dilemmas, managing your boss, and loving your job
- System administration salary negotiation
It's no wonder the first edition received Usenix SAGE's 2005 Outstanding Achievement Award!
This eagerly anticipated second edition updates this time-proven classic:
- Chapters reordered for easier navigation
- Thousands of updates and clarifications based on reader feedback
- Plus three entirely new chapters: Web Services, Data Storage, and Documentation

It's a top pick .......2007-09-08
The first edition of PRACTICE OF SYSTEM AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATION covers modern IT methodology, and this updated second edition provides a revision of four major areas of knowledge relating to system administration, reviewing key elements of successful network systems, how to build and run reliable services, building data centers and addressing security issues, and more. It's a top pick for any library serious about catering to advanced web programmers, computer professionals, and students of network administration - as well as for practicing administrators.

Awesome!.......2005-02-08
The Practice of System and Network Administration shows you how to become a great SA.
This is no 'for dummies' book.
The Practice of System and Network Administration is a great guide.
Awesome!.......2004-10-11
I agree with some of the worse reviews: This book addresses all the touchy-feely stuff not found in other manuals.
That, however, is what it's for (It's plainly stated on the book! Read the friendly Meta-Manual!) and it
is in fact a wonderfully lucidly written cornucopia of information in that field. It also is delightfully platform-independent, even if it is perceivable that the authors have a UNIX background (but which Sysad doesn't?).
It's a simple fact that Sysads get other things wrong more often than the tech stuff: Communicating changes, seeing it all from the user's POV, negotiating (yes, they deal with salary, too), saying "yes" so that it isn't understood as "yes to all"; saying "no" so that it isn't understood as "fsck you!".
That's why we're often hated as arrogant BOfHs. This manual endeavours to fix that, and it just might succeed.
A Mentor in a Book.......2004-08-30
The book market is flooded with books that will tell you all about the technical details of administering various software products and operating systems. Their scope is usually limited to whatever technical product is being written about and they become outdated as quickly as the technology becomes outdated. This book is very different. It gives guidelines in a very readable, coaching style, that can be applied to many different aspects of the System Administration trade.
I have been a System Administrator for a few years now, but this book clarifies many of the issues that I work with daily. It's like a having a mentor on my bookshelf that I can pull down and consult for advice. I especially like the whole section of seven chapters dealing with different aspects of management. These chapters should be mandatory reading for every SA -- and their bosses.
The book is written in a very readable style and has many useful and insightful real-world examples that show that the authors have been around and learned a lot on the way. The book is worth reading just for these examples. I read the book from cover to cover.
I first heard about this book when I attended a seminar Tom Limoncelli
taught at the 2003 LISA conference titled "Time Management for System Administrators: How to Keep from Going (More) Crazy". Many of the topics in the seminar are covered in detail in the book.
If you're a system administrator, you should read this book.
Best book in its class........2002-11-11
If you are looking for a fundamentals book on Unix or Windows 2000 operating systems, go elsewhere. This book is completely about the methodologies for architecting, running and maintaining your IT data center. It's the best book in its class hands down.
Book Description
This stunning, lavishly illustrated book chronicles the entire planning and construction process of the Frank Gehry-designed Ray and Maria Stata Center at MIT. Taking us from the historical background and architectural context at MIT through the interaction of the clients' needs and the architect's vision to the choice of building materials and construction methods, Building Stata offers a uniquely detailed look at the evolution of a major work by a master architect.
The purpose of the Stata Center is to bring the "intelligence sciences"--computer science, artificial intelligence, information and decision systems, linguistics, and philosophy--together into a space that emphasizes research-focused collaboration. Frank Gehry's design integrates flexible and interconnected workspaces and incorporates a series of steps from public to private space, with places for social and intellectual interaction on lower levels giving way to space for study and contemplation on the upper floors; thus a two-level warehouse-like space is topped by two towers. The Center is wrapped around a series of outdoor terraces visible from a central court in both towers. The characteristic Gehry curves are clad in metal, the more block-like elements in brick.
The architectural drawings and photographs -- 300 of them in color -- in Building Stata document the making of the Stata Center from concept to concrete reality. The photographs by Richard Sobol portray a work in progress, evoking the beauty of its architectural form and capturing the telling detail -- the building's sculptured shape against a clear blue sky, or construction workers perched on a massive curve of metal.

Kurt Weill's songs are wonderful to sing-.......2007-02-14
I've always wanted to learn some cabaret songs! These have an operatic or art-song flair, which I enjoy. They each tell a story, based mostly on what had taken place during the 1930's, in Berlin during the war era.
My vocal coach reccomended it to me, as part of my repertoire, and I can't thank her enough. The songs are in mostly German and French, with one song , "Buddy on the Nightshift"- in English.
I reccomend this book, if you want a change from singing traditional opera arias, but still want to sing in a operatic manner-and want to sing something with the cabaret sound, something that can be jazzy too.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A590514. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Perchloroethene (PCE), Trichloroethene (TCE) and their degradation products are among the most common organic groundwater contaminants in the United States. Constructed wetlands utilizing upward flow harbor reduction- oxidation conditions that have demonstrated the potential to promote both partial and total mineralization of PCE and TCE through the process of natural attenuation. Organic acid and inorganic anion concentrations are indicative of reduction-oxidation processes that drive chlorinated ethene degradation. These analytes were investigated to assess their development within three vertically stratified regions of a constructed wetland cell at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base fed by groundwater contaminated with PCE and TCE. Data collected during the months of January 2002, December 2002, and January 2003 revealed changes in the organic acid pool over time and in space that correlated with changes in the inorganic anion pool. Overall organic acid concentrations decreased by an average of 93% over 11 month period, indicating a substantial geochemical evolution of the organic acid pool over this time frame. Measurements dissolved oxygen and ORP supported the existence of an aerobic region at the base of the wetland, followed by an anaerobic region in the strata above. Significant nitrate and sulfate reduction in the anaerobic region occurred in unison with the emergence of higher concentrations of lactate and formate.

Welcome To The Rat Race.......2005-11-19
Meet the great James Boliver "Slippery Jim" DiGriz, the Stainless Steel Rat himself, a pre-eminant scofflaw and star of ten 'Rat' novels. This ficitional futuristic thief proves himself to be an expert burglar, cool con man, and consumate liar. Out conned into working for the Special Corps, an elite government law enforcement and spy agency, DiGriz puts his talents to use all in the name of justice ... except, that is, when he's using them for his own self-benefit by breaking the very laws he should be upholding. Of course, Slippery Jim rationalizes this by claiming he is doing society a favor by committing crimes. Though a rascal, Jim is a humanist at heart and takes great care to ensure no injury befalls anyone as a result of the mischief he creates. In the three novels here, "The Stainless Steel Rat", "The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge" and "The Stainless Steel Rat Saves The World", DiGriz encounters the sociopathic femme fatale Angelina, a military society bent on conquering the universe, and the time traveling megalomaniac known known as He. Humor and action blend seemlessly in a tongue-in-cheek style that is thoroughly endearing to the loveable rapscallion the Stainless Steel Rat.
The Rat Rules!.......2004-06-24
I first read this book in the summer of 1977, and the Rat has endured as my alltme favorite fictional character since. Slippery Jim is easily one of the funniest and most endearing characters I have encountered in my literary adventures. Sure he's a scoundrel of sorts, but he does it for all the right reasons, of course! If you are looking or a futurstic psuedo-James Bond/Flint type character with great humor galore, the Rat is your man! I recommend the Rat highly to any sci-fi or action/adventure fan. Or for that matter, anyone with a sense of humor! I keep hoping for a Rat movie...
Looking for Deep, Thought Provoking SiFi?.......2002-10-25
THIS ISN'T IT! But if you're looking for a good romp through space with a quasi-vigilante, Jame Bond sort of character, you will thoroughly enjoy this material. An excellent read when you just want to have some fun!
A Decent Romp.......2001-02-14
This paperback omnibus collects the first three volumes of the nine volume (so far) Stainless Steel Rat series: "The Stainless Steel Rat," "The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge," and "The Stainless Steel Rat Saves the World." Never having read any of this legendary space cowboy series, I found that a little of this stuff goes a long way. The stories feature a charming rouge con-man who gets turned into an agent for the elite Special Corps. The first story is fun and mindless, the second is still fun, but by the end of it I was wondering if the formula was to be repeated in the third, which it was. There are some fun moments to be had, but this is writing by the numbers.
Best Book Ever Written........2000-09-05
I can say this after reading it about 12 times over the last 20 years. If you ever feel bad, just wonder 'what would Jim do?'
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
This book is much funnier, and the situation certainly helps. War is looming with an alien race, and yes, they are pretty much bug eyed monster types. The Stainless Steel Rat and relatives have to do something about it.
Infiltration is tricky, but all undercover super thief/spies are good at disguise. He can even do alien sexy. Pretty funny.
Building A Better Rat Trap.......2005-11-22
The title of the latest escapades of the "Rat" is a bit of a stretch of the imagination as it suggests images of vintage WWI era posters of Uncle Sam recruiting enlistments for the United States military. What actually occurs, though, is that after freeing his family members form various forms of incarceration the Stainless Steel Rat plays upon the gratitude for a good deed done and gains their support in battling an assortment of bug-eyed-monsters (BEM) bent on invading the human inhabited galaxy and making it thiers alone. At times silly, each BEM is more fearsome and funny than the last resulting in a plesant mixture of mayhem, hilarity and adventure. Enjoyable to the last, James Bolivar DiGriz proves once again that no rust has tarnished his stainless steel rat's hide.
This Rat Has Teeth!.......2002-07-16
What a relief to read The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You after the disappointing Stainless Steel Rat in Hell! What a difference fifteen years can make!
This Stainless Steel Rat is the Rat we all fell in love with - biting sarcasm, acerbic wit, the lapses in attention that land him in trouble, the daring escapes from that trouble, and a plot that moves briskly at all times, always staying a half step ahead of the reader. Just under 150 pages, it is just the right length; short enough to be read in one sitting, but long enough to draw the reader in.
The only downside to this one is the packaging. Contrary to the title and cover propaganda, the Rat does no recruiting (beyond his lovely yet dangerous wife and the twins). A better title would have been, The Stainless Steel Rat: Bug-eyed Alien Sex Goddess. Read the book and you'll see what I mean.
The best SSR book yet.......1999-02-21
I have read & enjoyed a number of Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat books, but this has got to be the best one yet. The book is loaded with the same slap-dash sense of humour and spontaneous action as found in the other SSR books, but this book's clever, well thought out plot puts it far above them. Slippery Jim's final solution for dealing with the slimy alien problem-makers is ingenious and satisfying, as is his surprising insight to the behaviour of the galaxy's sadistic grey men.

One escapist read.......2007-07-07
The book was bought for my Father, tends to take a long time to read any book as he has so many open at once. Being retired he should have the time to indulge his interests.
However, once he had started on the trio, it was not put down until he had completed it in two days. This is speed reading for my father. Once the book was passed to me I found that it was difficult to put down and it was read over a weekend.
I have previously read Harry Harrison, but find the "Stainless Steel Rat series particularly entertaining with the main characters anarchic approach to society whilst still having regard to the sanctity of life and liberty. This book would not be to everyones taste, they will probably take it too seriously, but for people like myself who wish to forget the outside world once in a while, the "Rat" is a good diversion.
Pleasure Unalloyed.......2007-01-12
What a joy it is to read (or reread) the Stainless Steel Rat books. I hope that the whole series will become available again so I can fill in any I may have missed. Harrison is one of the very few writers able to combine humor with good science fiction. You can usually just hand one to a friend and say please read the first page and if you're not hooked, quit.
Either you love the rat or you don't!.......2006-03-22
This book is fun. Not great literature. Not earthshakingly different or creative. It is just fun. Sometimes rooting for the antihero is just what we all need. Read the rat b4??? You will enjoy this trilogy. Never read the rat? This trio is a great way to be introduced. Give the rat a chance...guarenteed to taste just like chicken!! ;>)
Great Author, Great Series!.......2006-03-09
These first three books in the Stainless Steel Rat series are marvelous. The first book explains how Jim DiGriz, the son of porcuswine farmers on a backwater planet, becomes one of the greatest criminals of his time. The next two books feature various adventures as we follow Jim on his quest to satisfy his longings for more fun, more booze, and more money. I got hooked on this series after most of them were out of print, I am so glad that I can now get copies of the first three books in one handy paperback volume. I really love this series, just look at my name!
A good series.......2003-09-12
Actually, this is a four star series. The extra star is to balance out bad reviews given for reader errors that have nothing to do with the book.
It is a solid, entertaining read, well worth the time, and this edition gives you three novels out of this sometimes hard-to-find series.

Coping With Your Anger.......2002-02-13
Dr. Lester was a professor of mine and I have both heard him speak on this topic and have read his book with great interest. It's a terrific discussion of an emotion that many Christians are very uncomfortable with and often believe is sinful. As a psychologist, I use what I learned from Dr. Lester to help my clients understand and cope with their anger. It's the resource I recommend to Christian clients who have concerns about their anger.
