Book Description

Diane Smith is carving a niche for herself as an author of literary historical fiction set in the American West that features strong heroines, eccentric supporting characters, and surprising revelations from the natural sciences. Her new novel, set in 1876 right after the Battle of Little Bighorn, features an expedition into the Montana badlands with a group of individuals who have all suffered a significant loss during the Civil War. Their stories are told through the remembrances of Eleanor Peterson, a scientific illustrator in her late thirties, who travels to the Territories with her friend and mentor, an aging and utterly fascinating portrait painter named Augustus Starwood, to document a dinosaur fossil dig.

What starts as a summer respite from the city is soon complicated by arguments over prevailing theories of evolution, by Indians' moving north after their defeat of Custer, and by rival scientists' attempting to steal what could be the largest dinosaur remains ever found. Ultimately, though, this is a novel of personal discovery, revealing the redemptive power of the land and the rivers that run through it. With humor and sharp insight, the novel reveals the potential all individuals have to discover love, however fleeting, and to rebuild their lives far from civilization. Pictures from an Expedition is sure to appeal to women and to all readers interested in the history of science and the American West.

4 out of 5 stars An exceptionally well told tale.......2007-05-04

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book, which incorporated fascinating facts about history and geography with some of the most memorable characters to come along in modern literature. I cared about these people and came to know them and want to know more about them. As one other reviewer commented, the book ended all too soon!

Smith not only creates a credible world, but tells the tale within an imaginative framework.

I'm off to find other books by this wonderful author!

5 out of 5 stars the classic journey story.......2003-01-04

This book brings to mind Shakespeare's The Tempest , and not only because Prospero, in the character of Augustus Starwood, is constantly reciting from it.This is another telling of the classic incidental gathering of travellers on a journey. This time the quest is for bones, old and buried in Northern Montana in 1876. The author has given each character a full life and when they disperse, as all such gatherings do, it's a hard and sorrowful thing.I really liked this book a lot. And I don't say that about every book I read.

5 out of 5 stars Picturesperfect.......2002-10-10

I also read Diane Smiths first book and while that was a good read this book is head and shoulders above it. Augustus has to be one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. Its the way Ms. Smith weaves the tale that makes this book so memorable. She brings together all the different races, politics and nature colliding that were the west.I never knew that Dino digging started that far back and the skulduggery that went with it. I also did not really think of the newspapers playing to public opinion by using pro Indian or Wild Savage photos to promote a cause. This is a heartbreakingly beautiful novel. My only complaint is the Library Journal review above in which a key plot line is given away. Can't you get better reviewers than this.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous story told on a grand stage: XLNT!!.......2002-10-02

After reading Ms. Smith's first book, "Letters from Yellowstone", I eagerly awaited the release of this new effort. Set again in Montana, the scope of her new story is grander and even more riveting. Once more, the main character is a woman whose fate is cast amongst a group of men in pursuit of their own peculiar ambitions. Smith has created characters here that are rich and complex; and the story, which revolves around the search for dinosaur bones in the 19th Century, is a marvelous journey into our American past and into the minds & hearts of the principles involved. The star of the show is most definitely Augustus Starwood, the eccentric artist who accompanies our heroine....Eleanor Peterson....on her commission to illustrate the potential findings of the Montana expedition. And though the narrative revolves around his work and his oft bizarre personality, the narrative itself is told through the experience of Miss Peterson who evolves into an enduring and fascinating figure. Beyond the enticing prospects of fossil discovery and the importance (or frivolity) of these efforts, we are treated to a group of people literally torn loose from their moorings after the Civil War; thrown into the most extraordinary circumstances.....and the revelation of their innermost desires and fears are amplified throughout this finely crafted book. A true pleasure to read.....and certainly a treat for anyone who enjoyed Smith's previous effort.

5 out of 5 stars What a delightful surprise!.......2002-09-29

I read this book at a gallop. But when I was finished I was sorry I had reached the end so quickly.

Diane Smith has an utterly original mind. Her books are unlike any others I have read. She is intelligent, witty and imaginative and so are the characters she invents. Ms. Smith is never predictable. If you think you know what is coming next you will find yourself proven wrong.

I have been reading and thinking for half a century and I found things on the pages of this book that left we breathless with wonder.

I won't go into detail. Read this one for yourself and see if you, too, aren't pleasantly surprised.

                    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

In a book world awash in sword-slinging fantasy novels, each trying to out-Jordan the other, the arrival of yet another big new series on the scene is... no big deal. But much to the delight of readers bored to tears by doorstopper clones, Elizabeth Haydon's three-part tale is unique, thrilling, and utterly romantic from start to finish. The story of a magical singer of extraordinary power and her battle with a blood-soaked demon began in Rhapsody: Child of Blood and continued in Prophecy: Child of Earth. The trilogy's final volume, Destiny: Child of the Sky offers fantasy fans something they crave, but don't often see--a great ending.

When last we saw our lovely heroine Rhapsody and her two best friends Achmed and Grunthor, they had just rescued the Sleeping Child from the evil tendrils of the F'dor. But as they found out through the tragic loss of their young friend Jo, the three must follow the demon's trail of violence and blood, finding the children it has spawned across the land in order to track it down and destroy it once and for all. As in the previous two books, Rhapsody's love of her friends and desire to save children in danger drive her most reckless actions.

Elizabeth Haydon delivers us from the fantasy traps of never-ending plots, wooden characters, and yawn-inducing battles. She takes much of her style from romance and suspense novels, rather than historical fiction, giving her books real depth of emotion and humanity. It's true that there are spots of sentimentality that may leave some hardened adventure fans groaning, but that very thing may help explain why Haydon's books have succeeded with crossover romance readers so admirably. We can only hope she'll set her sights on another swoony adventure as soon as possible. --Therese Littleton

3 out of 5 stars Trilogy Plus How Many More?.......2007-09-13

When I read the word, "Trilogy" it conjures up, well, THREE. In that the story is told and comes to a conclusion in Three books. Sure a story can be expounded upon after the Trilogy is done (especially if there is reader interest in the story and characters) But the Trilogy should be Done in Three books... Not the Third book ending with a blatant "To Be Continued" as this one does. That, to me, would be a Quadrupoly or a Quintupoly. And from what I'm looking at on-line, it looks like this story may end up being a Sextupoly or More. (As others have mentioned, I don't think I could stand that many books worth of the Rhapsody/Ashe romance.)
Having said That, I liked the overall story line just fine. I personally wanted to have more Achmed and Grunthor included in the second and third books. Instead their presence lessened with each subsequent book altho' they remained woven into important aspects of each story.
The romance between Rhapsody & Ashe became adolescent after a while so that aspect of the story lost my interest early in its inception. I was quite glad that they "road off in opposite directions" for the majority of this book.
I liked that it was the original three, Rhapsody, Achmed & Grunthor that took on the F'dor by themselves.
I thought that the unification of the Cymrian peoples was accomplished too easily and couldn't quite buy into it happening pretty much right off the bat. With all of the glorius detail that Ms. Hayden put into her books (and she does write with glorious detail!) I would have liked to see more detail as to Why Rhapsody was able to bring centuries of hostilities between people to an end in one day.
I go into reading books with the understanding that I might not like every aspect of a story so I do say that these books are well worth reading for fantasy fans. I May go on to read more but as of this moment I haven't ordered Book 4 (or 5) of this "Trilogy".

5 out of 5 stars Destiny - Second book in Rapsody trilogy.......2007-05-07

I enjoyed this book better than the first. It had more action and the characters were doing more.

                    3 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2007-01-19

I actually really enjoyed these books quite a lot. I love epic fantasy, Robin Hobb being one of my favorite authors. So when I read the placard next to the Robin Hobb books in Borders that said "If you like Robin Hobb, you'll LOVE Elizabeth Haydon's Rhapsody series" I immediately picked up all three and began reading them right away.

What a disappointment, all in all. The books are well written, but totally OVER-written. Page after page describing colors and sounds and scenery. I mean, I certainly understand that good fantasy is full of descripitive details that allow the reader to see the beauty of the world created by the author, but Ms. Haydon completely over did it with these books.

I love Rhapsody as a character, but by the end of the third book, I was almost as disgusted with Rhapsody and Gwydion's romance as I was with Azhure and Axis' "romance" in Sara Douglass' Wayfarer Redemption series. It became so generic during the second book that I actually skipped paragraphs, then pages, because I was so tired of reading about the perfection of their love. They fall in love, he tells a lie, she gets angry and hits him, he smiles and shakes his head, they make love.. then he lies again, she finds out and refuses to speak to him, he bears his soul and they make love... Give me a break. I HATED reading about the number of times that he would take her hand and kiss it, or she would hold his face in her arms and kiss him, how he would scream her name frantically when he couldn't find her and then she'd run to him and kiss him, how he was as possessive of her like a dragon hoards his treasure... The epilogue of Destiny makes it clear WHY the book was written like a love story between Gwydion and Rhapsody, but MY GOD, the kisses and hugs and giggles made me roll my eyes. Not because it was mentioned - Ms. Haydon went out of her way to make human interaction as realistic as possible, and kissing and giggling is inevitable in many real life loves - but it was mentioned SO OFTEN. For an 835 page book, 400 of those pages were full of rubbish descriptions of colors, scenery, Rhapsody's clothes, Ashe's eyes and 2 adults in the midst of puppy love. I should have gone to the Young Adult section of Borders.

In addition, the ENDLESS references to Rhapsody's beauty made me nauseous. Okay, we get it - Rhapsody was beautiful. I was really hoping that Ms. Haydon would help the reader to understand why it was that everyone else saw the difference in her, even though she didn't see it in herself. After walking through fire, Achmed and Grunther both noted the change - so why, when Rhapsody looked in the mirror, did she see no difference in her appearance? I was really hoping that the end of the book would reveal something like, the purity of her soul made her as beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside, so other people could see it but she couldn't. But it didn't. The fact that people always wanted to touch her and look at her and buy her things and possess her and screw her made me yawn. Again, it made me think of Azhure and Fariday from the Wayfarer's Redemption - 6 books and I only read 5 because I was SO FED UP with the main characters that I didn't care how the series ended. I found it sort of upsetting that it was Rhapsody's beauty that made her so powerful, that made people listen to her - she was wise and kindhearted and refreshing to be around. So HOW did it add to the story that every man who saw her lusted for her? I don't necessarily think that a heroine has to be ugly - but does her beauty have to be referenced on EVERY PAGE?

I was really upset near the end of the books because I was hoping to read more about Achmed and Grunthor. I didn't understand the sudden attraction he had for Rhapsody - in fact, I didn't understand why she shared passionate kisses with every man she met (spoilers ahead), Anborn, Constantin, Ashe and Achmed. But I thought his character was extremely well written and mysterious and real. In addition, I think part of the prophecy of the Three - the part that mentions Grunther as the one who abandons - NEVER comes to fruition. Who did he abandon? The sleeping child? Maybe I'm just slow.

Anyway, as I've said, I really did enjoy the books, despite my ranting above. I just found Ms. Haydon's depiction of Rhapsody to be obnoxious and overdone. I think someone mentioned previously that she probably had this story in her heart for a long time and had to get it on paper, and I totally respect that. And perhaps the love between Ashe and Rhapsody was her fantasy love story - but I feel that it really could have been done better. I'll probably continue to read her books, because I did love the story. I just hope that I don't ever have to read about how someone's "smile outshone the sun" 50 times in one single book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Page Turner.......2006-08-17

The first of a vibrant series of page turners- you'll want to read the whole series as the next adventure starts when the book you're reading is just coming to a close. colorful characters, plenty of adventure, a dash of magic and mystery, and prophecy to keep you guessing. A must read!

2 out of 5 stars good... if you're looking for a romance novel........2006-08-03

I orginally picked up this series because I thought it was fantasy, with a little bit of a love story thrown in. Turns out, it's a romance novel with a fantasy setting. I despise the 'perfection' of the main character, as well as Ashe's (and everyone else's) obsession for her. I find Rhapsody's perfection only to be evident in that the author tells us it is so, rather than Rhapsody's actions. She is quick tempered and judgemental, and feels she is always justified in her opinions and actions.

It's a shame that the series ended up like this. I enjoyed the first book enough to buy the next two books at the same time. I didn't expect the plot to be overshadowed by Rhapsody's rather obnoxious relationship.

                        5 out of 5 stars MUST READ!.......2007-09-17

This book is a must read for women and very insightful. Realizing that Biblical Christianity can touch a life by every single interaction we have, and also that many Christians don't really know how they would approach or broach the subject of religion with a Muslim woman, this book is an excellent resource! Christianity and the Muslim faith are opposing beliefs. They do not believe in the same God, the same Jesus and the same Holy Spirit. To love a Muslim enough to tell them about the God of the Bible will open doors to allowing them to hear the truth. God's Spirit will work from there :)

Well worth the read, and Unveiling Islam is the next book on this same subject that EVERY CHRISTIAN, male or female, should read.

Great book. Provides insight into the lives of Muslim women. Their thinking, their mindset, unspoken issues. You judge if you think these women have a voice. What is the outworking of fear in their lives?

1 out of 5 stars forgetting ontology of sexes.......2006-07-07

                        This book is inviting Muslim women who presently believe;

God transcends sexes(ontologically different cathegories); sexes are for the created
Man and woman are created from the same selves (ontological equality)
A woman can stand up in a mosque and remind the caliph his duties (and the caliph says "she is right and I am wrong")

                        To another faith which believes;

God is male (a father) that gives birth to a God-son (another male). However the worldly birth is by a human-woman.
Man is the primary creation and the woman secondary
A woman cannot talk in a church but can ask her husband later

With an art finding its roots in sophists who openly said: "our art is one of showing the small big and the big small"

As a proverb in my country says "a mighty arguing thief can overcome the houseowner". Something like that.

Do not forget many ex-christian western people came to the realization that the basis of all inequality is due to a MALE God. The troubles about women's issues are ontological in Christianity and the accusations -which I disagree with most but agree with some- on Islam are in level of law or tradition. Former unsolvable, latter something can be done about if people intend to.

Indeed Muslim scholars are very expertly critical of their hadith collections from the earliest days of their existence. This criticism finds its roots inside Islam:Quran is divinely preserved, Allah said so but Allah did not say such a thing about the sayings of the prophet so noone can say hadith collections are perfect. How much ever you try you may not be able to escape human errors in them. This is most beautifully and very briefly summarized in Murad W. Hofmann's Islam in 3rd Millenium in a constructive way.

Also one wonders if crescent is a shadow and Christ is light are they not equally shadow and equally light for Muslim men? Is this a trick of (conceptually) "divide and destroy"? As we well know Evangelists care less whether we Muslims become Christians or not but basically want to diminish the resistance of Islam to Anglo Saxon/Jewish hegemony which we Muslims mostly find unjust.

The impressionn that the authors have been brought by a muslim cleric father is misleading. Their mother was not Muslim- she was Swedish though I donno if she truly practised Christianity. Due to difficulties in family at an early age they have been taken by Evangelic Christians and they have learnt Islam Evangelic Christian way.By people who HAVE TO look all other religions as founded by Devil in order to exist. And have to interpret everything according to this basis. If you want to know how the basis you accept changes interpretation than a cow is a god in India, something you fight with in Spain, beef steak in North America etc.I have seen books Christians try to show Buddha's light is from Devil or Hinduism's mystical experience is so too. Wheras Islam sees other religions as teachings of prophets corrupted by time and people and yet still carries something precious in them. Quran says Allah gave compassion to Christians' hearts.I believe this was what Caner brothers faced when they met Evangelists.

1 out of 5 stars a women who is walking backwards.......2006-06-09

First of all, I think we need to clear up that Islam is not far off from other religions such as Christianity anyway. You do not need to go into the light , you are already in it. Islam is the true religion and has been the same message that was given to Adam, Moses, Abraham and Jesus. Sadly, after each prophet passed away, their messages were changed by the people and now the religions are very different. People who still follow the old religions of Christianity and Judaism are very close to being Muslim and there is nothing wrong with that. The problem is when Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him) recieved the Quran, it included more of God's message, so it completes it. That's why after that, no prophet has been sent to Mankind. The Quran is all you need. This sister unfortunately has changed her religion for reasons that do not make sense, from a religion that has been clearly explained to a religion that has so many loopholes and things that don't work.
If you read this book , you should know there are many books about people who converted from Christianity to Islam. If Christianity is right, what could possibly make them leave then. If Islam is such a bad religion, then hy is it the fastest growing religion in the WORLD? The message has stayed the same . It's people who have changed. one person leaves, another comes. that's how life goes.
it is a good book to see how they felt but it should not be seen as a true representation of what being a muslim women is like because it's very different.

Dr. Caner is a Turkish, Persian immigrant, and a former Muslim. His father was a muezzine in the mosque. I'll take my chances with his knowledge and experiences, versus that of the people whom you "know" and/or "heard the facts" from.

                          Book Description

What starts out as a phone call and job offer to forty-something Arizonan Mike Green quickly evolves into a mystifying adventure into the unknown.

Mike is recruited into a quasi-scientific Defense Department research team based in San Diego. He starts his job with the "Joint Reconnaissance Study Group" on San Diego's Point Loma peninsula. Ten women and men comprise the JRSG. Several loyal allies, and deadly opponents, soon emerge.

The JRSG and its friends search for information on unusual national security-related issues and mysteries. They look into crop circles, dolphin intelligence, deep DNA memory theories, UFOs, ESP, modern physics, near-death experiences, so-called "Earth changes" and "pole shift" concepts, and Native American culture and legends.

Connections between these areas are discovered as well as links to the past and the future of Earth and the human race.

The women and men of the research group explore ancient questions and modern discoveries crucial to the evolution and survival of humanity. Group members explore Arizona, the "Four Corners" region, and Oahu, Hawaii.

They face experiences that are scientific, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. The group uncovers dangerous threats to their investigation, to the United States, Earth, and human civilization.

Mike feels he's getting in over his head at times. Even with the support and fellowship of the research group and friends, he faces extreme circumstances alone.

In the midst of dangers and challenges, there is romantic heat between him and Amy Mella, one of the group's dolphin researchers.

This is also a story of relationships between women and men, military and civilian, the intelligence community and the average American. It is an exploration of phenomena and mysteries that now rightly hold the interest and attention of millions of people worldwide.

The story climaxes in a hidden canyon on the Navajo Nation in far northeastern Arizona. In a kiva, one of the large sunken stone circles of the ancient Anasazi people, many VIPs attend a special field conference. Sudden discoveries, dangers, and the experience of the strange unknown shock those present.

The characters in MISSION INTO LIGHT follow paths of discovery and knowledge to find new understanding of their nation, the human species, and the hoped-for breakthrough that will change the world.

I heard Michael Lindvall read some of these stories before the book was published and I'd been waiting over a year for my copy.
The stories are a little uneven and none are as funny as some in the first book, but I'm very happy to have my copy and I'll share it with others at my Presbyterian Church.
The very best story is Our Organist. I cried when I first heard it and I cry reading it. The whole world needs to know of the openness of many churches.
It is not an easy job to pastor especially in the small, rural church. Michael Lindvall expresses some of the doubts and triumphs that a minister feels.
