Charles Chestnutt's 1921 novel begins with a startling premise: expatriate Paul Marchand, a "Free Man of Color," returns to New Orleans only to discover that he is now officially white. Thanks to a will, he has become the head of a rich, powerful--and racist-- Creole family. To claim his birthright, however, he must renounce his mixed-race wife and children, as well as all the principles of his upbringing. Novelist Chestnutt was the most popular and critically acclaimed African-American writer of his day. By the time he wrote Paul Marchand, F.M.C., however, he had fallen from favor, and publishers universally rejected the novel. Its publication marks a recent resurgence of interest in his writing, and it's clear to see why; if Chestnutt's purple prose and melodramatic plot twists sometimes seem dated, his ideas do not. With its dramatic schism between nature and nurture, Marchand's dilemma poses some peculiarly modern questions about the meaning of race. Like many current theorists, Chestnutt saw race as a social construct rather than as an irreversible biological fact, perhaps because of his own background. He was himself light-skinned enough to pass for white, and knowing that he decided not to do so gives this fascinating novel added resonance.

Book Description

Evoking the atmosphere of early-nineteenth-century New Orleans and the deadly aftermath of the San Domingo slave revolution, this historical novel begins as its protagonist puzzles over the seemingly prophetic dream of an aged black praline seller in the famous Place d'Armes. Paul Marchand, a free man of color living in New Orleans in the 1820s, is despised by white society for being a quadroon, yet he is a proud, wealthy, well-educated man. In this city where great wealth and great poverty exist side by side, the richest Creole in town lies dying. The family of the aged Pierre Beaurepas eagerly, indeed greedily, awaits disposition of his wealth. As the bombshell of Beaurepas's will explodes, an old woman's dream takes on new meaning, and Marchand is drawn ever more closely into contact with a violently racist family. Bringing to life the entwined racial cultures of New Orleans society, Charles Chesnutt not only writes an exciting tale of adventure and mystery but also makes a provocative comment on the nature of racial identity, self-worth, and family loyalty.

Although he was the first African-American writer of fiction to gain acceptance by America's white literary establishment, Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932) has been eclipsed in popularity by other writers who later rose to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance. Recently, this pathbreaking American writer has been receiving an increasing amount of attention. Two of his novels, Paul Marchand, F.M.C. (completed in 1921) and The Quarry (completed in 1928), were considered too incendiary to be published during Chesnutt's lifetime. Their publication now provides us not only the opportunity to read these two books previously missing from Chesnutt's oeuvre but also the chance to appreciate better the intellectual progress of this literary pioneer. Chesnutt was the author of many other works, including The Conjure Woman & Other Conjure Tales, The House Behind the Cedars, The Marrow Tradition, and Mandy Oxendine. Princeton University Press recently published To Be an Author: Letters of Charles W. Chesnutt, 1889-1905 (edited by Joseph R. McElrath, Jr., and Robert C. Leitz, III).

5 out of 5 stars A lost treasure.......1999-01-18

This is not my first Chesnutt book. Over the years I read the Marrow of Tradition, House Behind the Cedars and several of Chesnutt's short stories. PAUL MARCHAND FMS is truly a lost treasure. The introduction is extremely well done and gives an excellent explanation to new readers of this genre. All readers will get a true sense of the racial lines that exsisted in early 19th century New Orleans and how some of these same feelings exist today. If you have not been a reader of Chesnutt, this is a good place to start. I'm sure that you will come to love his writings just as I have. As a native of Cleveland, Ohio, I'm proud to remind all readers that Chesnutt spent most of his live in Cleveland and is buried in Cleveland's historic Lakeview Cemetery.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Supplement.......2007-07-27

Player's Guide to Faerun is a very good FR supplement, but it lacks any information on the facts that happened (are going to happen depending on the year your campaign is going on) after the Year of The Rouge Dragons. It focus a lot on the planes other then the material plane and prestige classes, but not much on geography and politics between the realms.

4 out of 5 stars Very prompt .......2007-05-08

This book was well worth the money I spent, it was delivered to me in quick timing, and was in almost perfect sondition.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Upgrade to 3.5.......2007-05-07

I'm always a little leary about buying "Player's Guides" since I'm a DM most of the time, but this one was almost necessary to correct the errors and region system in the original Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (Dungeons & Dragons). Also upgrades spells from the Magic of Faerun! Very cool and worth every penny I spent so far.

4 out of 5 stars A USEFULL GUIDE FOR FEARUN PLAYERS.......2006-11-18

A USEFULL GUIDE FOR FAERUN PLAYERS

This book contains 3 specification
- 3.5 Updates of FR Realms Campign Setting
- A gathering book from other FR Rule Books
- Some new addition things

The most important thing of this book that is care us; it is a gathering guide book from main books of Forgotten Realms. (FR Campaign Setting, Faiths & Pantheons, Races of Faerun, Magic of Faerun) This Guide takes the important things for players from these 4 books and collects together. It is a Summary of them.

Player Guide to Faerun includes nearly all things for Forgotten Realms players. The players can find necessary knownlodge for their characters in one book. But if they wants more details and other specific things they should to have ektra books.

The main reason for to get this book is; The standard Faerun Players may use this book without need the other books. They may take only two book to games; The Players Handbook and Players Guide to Faerun. This may be second main book for them.
Also, they can create their characters and play after for dont need the FR Campaign Setting.

It is only few new additon things whose is not other books. So dont think to buy for only new additions.

If you thing to have minimal number books to play in Forgotten Realms, you should buy only two books; FR Campaign Setting, Player Guide to Faerun. (After to have 3 core rule book of D&D)
The players who have other FR books, they may also get this book if they want quick summary guide under their hand during their games.

Includes the Collection of these:
Races, P.Classes, Skills, Feats, Domains and Spells, Magic Items, Epic Levels.

This was my fifth FR book, I have had before these books; FR Campaign Setting, Faiths & Pantheons, Races of Faerun, Magic of Faerun, but I want to take this guide also because I want a usefull thin guide for bring it to games. Sometimes it is some difficult to look and find your needs other 4 books, it may took time.

I recommended this book for Players of Forgotten Realms Players, but not for any DM. It is a Player Guide like name. And I repeat this; it is a summary book for FR players.

4 out of 5 stars Playing or running a Forgotten Realms campaign? Pick this up!.......2006-11-04

I'm usually a pessimist when it comes to the glut of D&D monthly products, but this book is entirely character options, and while none of them are top notch, it's got very detailed info on deity and regional stuff that pertains to players. Very useful, and although some of it is only a rules update from the F.R. campaign book (3rd edition), it's also a lot easier to skim through for bits of information. It's definitely a solid book, a must-have for DMs, and I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't campaign-specific.

5 out of 5 stars Piaffer and Passage.......2000-06-27

Piaffer and Passage by Albert Eugene Edouard Decarpentry (1878-1956) is a masterful piece by a classical dressage rider. The man who brought us the axiom "When hands, no legs; when legs, no hands," in his classic book Academic Equitation, here brings a pearl of wisdom in terms of preparing a horse for the Olympic level movements of piaffer and passage. When I first became acquainted with this book in 1973, it was part of a limited collection, with only 1000 copies.

A fairly brief book as dressage treatises go, it is rich with instructive photographs, and clear and easy to read and understand. It was a great pleasure for me to see that it is now being republished by Half Halt Press.

General Decarpentry (a Colonel in the French cavalry when he wrote Piaffer and Passage) rode at the French Dressage School of Saumur. He served in the Federation Equestre International (FEI). Although a follower of Baucher, Decarpentry taught his horses to move forward with impulsion. Besides being a practitioner, Decarpentry was thoroughly acquainted with the teachings of other dressage masters, and in my opinion, his contributions to dressage are as important as those of any of the masters. As a dressage instructor, an avid reader myself, owner of an extensive dressage library, and author of A Passion for Dressage (a free on-line publication on classical dressage), I list Piaffer and Passage in my short list of best 6 dressage books ever, along with works of Podhajsky, Seuning, and Klimke.

Piaffer and Passage includes a discussion on the order to teach these movements, the detailed development of each of these movements, including important tests to determine if the horse is understanding and has been prepared in a systematic way. A discussion on transitions between the piaffer and the passage is also included. I give this book five stars!

5 out of 5 stars A Horse is a Horse, Of Course... Or Is It?.......2006-05-06

I'm talking about the young adult book, HORSE PASSAGES, by Jennifer Macaire.

I'll admit it... At first I hesitated to read this book. I've never been a huge, Horses Rule gal. But guess what-it's the human characters who rule this book (although the horses do make wonderful companions and add a necessary thrill to the story).

Jennifer Macaire seamlessly weaves in factual details about horses-riding them and their care-without ever losing focus of the story itself. As a non-horse-knowing gal, I enjoyed feeling a part of the herders' lifestyle. I never once felt as if I were an outsider looking in. Now that's good storytelling. And hey, if you ARE a Horses Rule gal or guy-you'll find even more pleasure from this book!

Orphaned twins, Meagan and Carl Cadet, share an honored path-they're horse herders. But the horses they herd are unique, for each horse grows beautiful clusters of unicorn-like horns made of living quartz. Like fingerprints, each is dazzlingly different from the other. The horses use these horns to travel through mystic passages, finding new planets for humans to colonize. Meagan and Carl are two fine, teenaged equestrians who make perfect caregivers for these unusual horses-if they can avoid the merciless Raiders....

Raiders stalk horse herders-capturing them to work their mines-using them until death finally takes the poor humans away from their endless misery. For once taken, no human is able to escape the brutal grasp of these mysterious aliens.

HORSE PASSAGES is divided into two books-both intertwined. Book I follows Meagan as she faces the terror that took both of her parents and her little sister-the Raiders. Carl is left behind, fearing the worst. He can't save her... Meagan must save herself.

Book II follows Carl as he faces his own frightening reality-falling off a horse during mid-passage. He will die, unless he follows the light....

Each twin's story in HORSE PASSAGES sends the reader into a whirlwind of emotions-just what I like! Each twin is well defined, written to be accessible and intimate with the reader.

HORSE PASSAGES is an exciting young adult read I highly recommend!

P.S. To Readers-there's a twist at the end of Book II... It's left a strong impression with me that I would say leaves me feeling both anxious and exuberant.

    P.S. P.S. To Jennifer Macaire-I want more!!!!

5 out of 5 stars creative intriguing outer space tale.......2006-02-01

Their parents and their younger sister were abducted by the enigmatic Raiders, but their father managed to save his twins Carl and Meagan Cadet. They miss their family, but both know that no one has ever escaped from Raider captivity. Though dangerous they continue to herd the horses that somehow open passages between planets.

The Cadets are on Tauii 3 when the wild Jeffries bunch arrives on the scene with their herd. However an accident occurs with the youngest brother dying from a fall. The oldest Luke goes into depression, but the shy Meagan pulls him out of it. Not long afterward, Raiders arrive to capture Meagan and Luke and his herd; Carl, Luke's siblings and the Cadet herd escape. The Raiders take Meagan and Luke to join other prisoners working the mines on some isolated orb. Escape seems impossible, but each takes a turn encouraging the other to keep up the hope even as they begin to fall in love, but are too tired to do much more than sleep near each other.

HORSE PASSAGES is an action packed science fiction coming of age thriller that grips the audience from the moment the Jeffries and their herd land on Tauii 3. The story line is action-packed, but key cast members are not neglected as the audience will fully understand why Meagan stutters, what drove the Jeffries to behave like the world will end tomorrow, and slowly over the course of the tale learn much of what motivates the Raiders. Though why herders would continue to do this type of dangerous work is somewhat explained the benefits are not. Still Jennifer Macaire provides a creative intriguing outer space tale.

                    Book Description

Does violence inevitably shadow our ethico-political engagements and decisions, including our understandings of identity, whether collective or individual? Questions that touch upon ethics and politics can greatly benefit from being rephrased in terms borrowed from the arsenal of religious and theological figures, because the association of such figures with a certain violence keeps moralism, whether in the form of fideism or humanism, at bay. Religion and Violence: Philosophical Perspectives from Kant to Derrida's careful posing of such questions and rearticulations pioneers new modalities for systematic engagement with religion and philosophy alike.
