Book Description

Brad Thor's national best-selling debut, The Lions of Lucerne, was hailed as "high-voltage entertainment reminiscent of Robert Ludlum" (Literary Journal). Now, he again delivers a non-stop action as one man's quest for revenge thrusts him into a battle to save his country....

After rescuing the President from kidnappers, Navy SEAL turned Secret Service agent Scot Harvath shifts his attentions to rooting out, capturing, or killing all those responsible for the plot. As he prepares to close out his list, a bloody and twisted trail of clues points toward one man -- the world's most feared, most ruthless terrorist, Hashim Nidal. Having assembled an international league of Islamic terrorist networks in an ingenious plot to topple both Israel and America, Harvath and his CIA-led team must reach Nidal before it's too late. One problem remains -- they have no idea what the man looks like. With no alternative, Harvath is forced to recruit a civilian -- a woman who has survived a brutal hijacking and is now the only person who can positively identify their quarry.

From the burning deserts of North Africa to the winding streets of Rome, Harvath must brave a maelstrom of bloodshed and deception -- before a madman's twisted vision engulfs the world in the fires of all-out war....

Download Description

"When Brad Thor arrived on the scene with his hard-hitting debut novel, The Lions of Lucerne, he was greeted with an enthusiasm rarely seen since John le Carré's heyday. ""A roller-coaster of a debut,"" pronounced Kyle Mills. And Nelson DeMille, the master of the genre himself, welcomed Thor as ""a savvy new novelist"" with a knack for action scenes that ""will give the reader a case of vertigo."" Now, Thor and his indomitable hero Scot Harvath are back, raising the stakes and taking on one of the world's most deadly terrorist organizations bent on stoking a global holy war of apocalyptic proportions. After rescuing the President from kidnappers, Navy SEAL turned Secret Service agent Scot Harvath shifts his attentions to rooting out and capturing or killing all those responsible for the plot. As he prepares to close out his list, a bloody and twisted trail of clues points toward one man -- the world's most feared, most ruthless terrorist, Hashim Nidal, who has assembled an international league of Islamic terrorist networks in an ingenious plot to topple both Israel and America. Harvath and his CIA-led team must reach Nidal before it's too late. One problem remains -- they have no idea what the man looks like. Only one person can positively identify Harvath's quarry -- Meg Cassidy, a beautiful hijacking survivor. Together, Scot and Meg must untangle a maddening web of global intrigue stretching across four continents. From Macau, Jerusalem, and Chicago to Libya, Capri, and Rome, Harvath and Cassidy find themselves locked in a desperate race against time to sort the pieces of a deadly puzzle that will test not only their physical and mental limits, but also the growing bond they feel for each other. 1 out of 5 stars I should have paid attention to the 1 star reviews.......2007-10-05

thankfully, I got the book cheap because otherwise I would be furious. I'm already upset that I wasted some of my life trying to read this book. Finally, after 200 pages, I had to stop. The dialogue is juvenile.Harvath is the only one who can do things correctly; he's the only one among trained agents who can think; he's the only one who can shoot straight (oh, except for the convenient beautiful woman who just happens to take on armed terrorists). Please, don't make the mistake I made: pay attention to those 1 star reviews. Save your money for something that is worth it.

1 out of 5 stars awful.......2007-09-24

true one can glean some interesting information about weaponry, warfare and such but Thor needs a couple of years in writing 1,2,3,4 until he gets it right.
very formulaic and ultimately boring.

3 out of 5 stars Is Thor worth a second chance?.......2007-09-11

I wanted to like this book based on the fact that according to his biography, Mr. Thor seems to be considered a knowledgeable person regarding terrorism. I am therefore willing to give him another chance since this book was one of his earlier releases and the fact that I believe some of the best ways to explore what possible terrorist scenarios we could face as a nation are through novel form.

I am not the type of person who expects Les Miserables or Atlas Shrugged kind of character development and dialogue in thriller and spy novels. That being said however I thought the characters lacked much depth at all and the dialogue was extremely sophomoric throughout most of the book. The overall premise of the story I thought was interesting and could have made for a much better book.

I will give Thor another chance at some point but if I feel the same way about the next book after fifty pages I'll have to give up. There are too many other great thriller/spy novel authors like Daniel Silva and Vince Flynn just to name a couple.

3 out of 5 stars Page-Turning Junk Food for Action Fans.......2007-08-12

This isn't a great book by any stretch of the imagination. But it's a fun book, and sometimes its OK to have some fun while you're reading. If you like James Bond, Die Hard movies, or mid-80s Arnold Schwarzeneggar movies, you're going to like this book. There's lots of chases, guns, macho posturing, and humor. There's an attractive female, too! No sex, but that's OK, because if you like chases, guns, and taking it to the bad guys, this book has it.

What it doesn't have is good writing. It has long, long, chases and fights that are about as suspenseful as an episode of Barney. The reason there is no suspense is that the author never makes us feel as if the protagonists are in actual danger. There were times when I'd skip ahead six pages because that's how long the chase would go on for. Really, I get kind of tired reading about a car chase in which all the roads are named, but nothing happens to the plot. Oh, except the bad guy got away. Again.

Fun, but not something you proudly display on your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Good book/read.......2007-07-25

I really enjoy the Scot Harvath series. I think I like the Mitch Rapp series a bit more, by Vince Flynn. But I think Brad Thor does a good job with this character and his plots/books. Path of the Assassin is a good book and reads fast with action and drama to spare. Just what I need to "escape" for awhile in an alternate reality. A+

    Book Description

DESCRIPTION: New York Times bestselling authors David and Leigh Eddings continue their nationally bestselling The Dreamers series with this brand new epic fantasy.

The Vlagh has turned its attention from the lands of the goddess Zelana (The Elder Gods) to her brother, Veltan, ruler of the peaceful farming land around the Falls of Vash. These gentle villagers are Vlaghís obstacles as it breeds a hideous army to annihilate the world. Determined to protect his people and his lands, Omago, Veltanís human friend, works with the heroes from Zelanaís domain to raise a defense. But the gods and the humans have overlooked one person: Jalkan, an outlander, who is unleashing soldiers to corral innocent villagers and convert them to his ìreligionî of the Amar--ìthe one true god.î He covets the gold that Zelena and Veltan promised their mercenaries. And what are a few innocent deaths if they result in more gold for Jalkan and the rest of his empire?

1 out of 5 stars Groundhog Day - Absurdity without Humor.......2007-06-08

Book 1 (The Elder Gods) left me with enough interest to read more in the series. That has now been vanquished.

Book Two repeats itself over and over again as the author introduces each new character. Did the editor, publisher, or anyone at Warner Books bother to read the manuscript?

Hundreds of pages go by and the story crawls forward (like a snail, on Valium, traveling through molasses...). I kept reading, hoping against hope, that plot would gain some energy. It didn't.

When the key moment of the listless battle finally arrives, an 'unknown' god intervenes and creates a natural disaster that exterminates all the invading critters sent from Vlagh (along with some greedy church folk). The first book ended the same way. Yawn.

And according to all the experts in the story the Vlagh has now been permanently blocked from ever attacking those two regions again. That leaves the Vlagh with only two options left for expansion, the North and the East -- the domain of the remaining two gods.

What will the family of 4 gods do now?
    1) They will keep the mercenary armies together. Please ignore the fact that the Trogs and Maags have a long history of robbing and killing each other. Amazing, all of that history is lost when some gold is waved under their noses.
    2) New armies will be added to the mix adding even more paper thin characters to the story.
    3) The battle lines will be drawn... the pivotal moment will arrive and I assume... a "natural disaster" will bring the battle to end.

3 out of 5 stars Book 2 of the Dreamers is more like Book 1.5.......2007-04-04

David and Leigh Edding's second book of the Dreamers series, The Treasured One, will be better known as book 1.5 rather than book 2. Easily, two-thirds of the book goes back to the events in book one, The Elder Gods, but through different characters perspectives.

Much like the first book of the series, there is a lot of backtracking to help develop and introduce characters into the story. Normally, this would be perfectly fine. In this book, though, it is not. Readers will probably not want to spend nearly 300 or more pages reading about the previous book in the series. There is simply too much going over the events of the first war that took place in book one. If you are patient and are able to trudge through this boring large segment of the second book, then you will be happy to know that things do pick up and get interesting again.

The last small portion of The Treasured One brings out the second war with man against the man-bugs. Some of the newer creatures which the Vlagh conjures up are particularly interesting, but not completely original--you could think of a few other stories where similar enemies exist. Most readers will want more detailed action sequences of the war as the battle scenes are cut rather short and things seems to end the exact way as the war did in the first book.

Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good in this second book of the Dreamers series. It's still an interesting story, but it looks like with a little editing, this four book series could be cut down to three, if not two, books. Hopefully, the rest of the series (two more books) will pick up and get better.

2 out of 5 stars Just not the same..........2007-02-03

Like many of those providing comments, I have been a follower of the Eddings books from the start. The Belgariad and Malloreon series were books that were hard to put down, even reading them for a second time.

All of the "cute" banter between characters that used to be amusing is now just irritating. And the multiple viewpoints from different characters allow the plot to progress extremely slowly.

This series continues to be disappointing, which seemed to start with the Redemption of Althalus. What I have noticed is that there just doesn't seem to be any sense of danger in these books... Something that makes you keep reading to find out how the "good guys" will get out of an impossible situation. Good always seems to have the upper hand and there's never any doubt that they'll come out ahead. If even the slightest advantage seems to come to the other side, "something" will happen to completely erase that within a few pages. None of the main characters get into any kind of trouble, the battles seem to be mentioned as an afterthought... Just hearing "This war might end up being easier than we thought" for the tenth time doesn't provide any kind of concern about the outcome. Any time a new enemy appears, someone will instantly discover a brilliant way to keep them away and they'll be a non-factor for the rest of the book.

It is still an okay story, but just doesn't compare to the previous books and gets drawn out much further than it needs to be. I may read the rest of the series, probably just because I've gotten this far already. I'd suggest waiting until they hit the bargain bin, where I coincidentally found the first two books. Hard to say, but maybe the authors are just getting too old to put an exciting story together...

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here.......2007-01-04

This book continues another Eddings series that is eerily like all his others. You have to wonder if Eddings has had an original idea for characters and storyline since The Belgariad. How many times do we have to have the same bantering dialogue with the same or similar characters? How many times do we have to have cute child god/goddesses who want to be hugged and kissed? How many times do we have to methodically plod from country to country on a mythical continent with the same group of characters spouting the same old tired dialogues?
I have read every Eddings series (Belgariad, Malloreon, Elenium, and Tamuli) and this one is pretty much the same. In fact, it is not even as good as those. I could barely make it through this book and I would not recommend it or this series to anyone who hasn't read those other superior series I mentioned above and is just starving for more of the same.

    1 out of 5 stars A clear no-no ........2006-08-07

Eddings was readable a very long time ago when there was precious little to be read in the fantasy genre.
I don't say good but readable.
Already the very first "Pawn of the prophecy" in the Belgariad was shallow and suffered from an exceptionnaly poor characterisation.

Well, in the meantime the Donaldsons , G.R.R Martins , Eriksons , Williams and Bakkers came and showed how an original and complex fantasy with believable characters could be written.
All the while Eddings kept pouring out his stereotypical books copying more or less what he did centuries ago.

Nobody should waste time on Eddings in general and this ... book (?) in particular now when there is much, much better in the market.

I love to cook, love the Food Network and I adore cookbooks. For that reason, I enjoyed much of this book. I just didn't know many of the cooks in the book as I would have liked to and therefore wasn't quite as interested in their stories. I would love to see an updated version of this book with all of the "current" chefs that are on TV and creating masterpieces in some of the great restaurants today.

I'm disappointed with the book. There are several chapters named for the holidays and several that I do not consider holidays. Such as, Summer Picnics, Fall Favorites, Kid's Celebrations, Fancy Foods for a Diabetic Diet, Low-Carb Celebrations, Low-Fat Celebrations, and Ethnic Favorites. There are also several cocktail recipes. I don't think this book is worth the cost or the time to look at it.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime poetry of the ages.......2007-07-24

This book contains the most moving, personal theistic poetry I have ever read. I re-read it constantly, and have begun buying copies for my close friends. Basavanna and his Virasaiva followers shattered the caste barriers (which do not exist in the Vedas anyhow), and went on to shatter economic and gender barriers. The actions of these saints elaborates their poetry rather than contradicting it. If you don't buy this book, there will be more copies for me.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Bhakti poems devoted to Siva.......2002-04-27

These are fascinating medieval Bhakti poems by four Virasaiva saints, devoted to the Hindu god, Siva, translated from the Kannada language. I am in no position to judge the accuracy of the translation, but they read very well. I should point out that they were not polytheists but monotheists who worshipped God under the form of Siva, just as others, for example, would worship the one god under the form of Vishnu.

These four poets, Dasimayya, Basavanna, Allamu, and my favorite, Mahadeviyakka, flourished in the tenth to twelfth centuries. They wrote short poems called vacanas, and according to the translator, A. K. Ramanujan, the are the greatest poets in that tradition. They are a selection of their works, and the identification by a number refers to other editions, and does not imply there are hundreds of poems in this relatively short book.

The Bhakti saints often broke away from the Hindu caste system and the elaborate temples and ritual systems in the name of personal relgion. Poem 820 by Basavanna illustrates this perfectly (p. 89):

                  "The rich
                  will make temples for Siva.
                  What shall I,
                  a poor man,
                  do?"

                  "My legs are pillars,
                  the body a shrine,
                  the head a cupola
                  of gold." (820)

These four religious poets were devoted to Siva and generally addressed their vacanas to him. They all give particular titles to their universal lord connected with their experience of him. Three of them use titles connected to particular places where they had their conversion experiences. Bassavana addressed his poems to the "lord of the meeting rivers," and Allamu Prabhu to the "Lord of Caves." Devada Desimayya's village had a temple devoted to Ramanatha, Rama's Lord, and he used that. Similarly, Mahadeviyakka called her lord, Cennamallikarjuna, apparently related to the form of Siva worshipped in the temple of her village. Ramnujan translates this as "the Lord White as Jasmine," but points out in his introduction that it can also mean, "Arjuna, Lord of the godess Mallika." (p. 111)

The one I find most appealing is the young woman, Mahadeviyakka. She apparently had early devoted herself to Siva, but she was apparently more or less forced into a marriage with a king, which was not successful. She had already regarded herself as married to her "Lord White as Jasmine." Her poems sometimes refer to Siva as her husband and sometimes as her lover, reflecting the conflict.

There are stories of her wandering naked, covered with her long hair, to Kalyanna, where Basavanna and Allamu head a school of devotees. Among other things, Allamu asked her about her contradictory behavior, that is, why, since she wears no sari, she then covers herself with the tresses of her hair (no. 183, p. 112-13).

"Till the fruit is ripe inside
the skin will not fall off.
I'd a feeling it would hurt you
If I displayed the body's seals of love."

Anyway, they accepted her as one of their number. It is reported that she later continued her wanderings in search of her Lord. Tradition has it she died fairly young, in her twenties.

For all her independence, we must not read modern attitudes into her work. This is particularly true of her ambiguos feelings about her body.

"After this body has known my lord,
                  who cares if it feeds
                  a dog
                  or soaks up water?" (117)

I will offer a few phrases from Mahadeviyakka with the numbers of the vacanas:

"Seeing the feet of the master,

                  O lord white as jasmine,
                  I was made
                  worthwhile." (45)

"loving my lord white as jasmine
I have wandered through unlikely worlds." (69)

                  "O lord white as jasmine
                  filling and filled by all
                  why don't you
                  show me your face?" (75)

                  "Since your love
                  was planted,
                  I've forgotten hunger,
                  thirst and sleep." (79)

                  "Take me, flaws and all,
                  O Lord
                  white as jasmine." (251)

This book makes available some material which is rather hard to find elsewhere. The poems themselves, though they reflect the broad background of Hindu religious life, nevertheless can have in many respects a universal appeal for those devoted to the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars Siva, Destroyer of Illusions.......2000-01-15

This poetry is of the 10th century Bhakti, or devotional yogic tradition, which eschewed academic traditions of prosody and style ("...I don't know anything about meter/ I don't know anything of rhyme/ As nothing will hurt you, My Lord Siva, I'll sing as I love..." one poet writes). The book features excellent translations from Kannada (a Dravidian language), especially of the work of Mahadevi-Akka, a Godiva-like figure who left wealth, marriage, home, and ultimately, her would-be teachers behind to wander naked and homeless in worship of her "Lord White as Jasmine." As the destroyer of illusions, Siva is a purveyor of truth, here found in this devotional poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably beautiful poetry.......1998-08-02

A collection of poems from southern India at about 1200 AD from the Siva cult, these poems range from profound intellectual theology to the loveliest of devotionalism. A find for readers from all traditions.
