      4 out of 5 stars A difficult read but a great book.......2007-09-05

A great book, an unreserved 4 stars.

On the "difficult read" point many reviewers keep in raising. I've always held the opinion that when writing use the simplest and clearest language of conveying your ideas - so do not use uncommonly used or difficult world when they can be avoided. I've always associated an author who uses difficult words as an intellectual snob.
In this regard the 2nd Chronicle is a lot worse that the 1st, it seems like Donaldson has swallowed a thesaurus.

Just for the amusement of all here are a few Donaldson classics:

Why use "Celerity" when you could use "Speed".
Why use "Mien" when you could use "Expression".
Why use "Filigree" when you could use "Delicate Pattern"
      And...
Why the use "Tintinnabulation" when you could use "ringing of bells"!?!

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat Depressing Story, but Very Entertaining.......2007-07-07

If you have read the other books in the series, you sort of know what to expect. Covenant gets transported to the Land where Lord Foul is back to his old tricks. Unfortunately Covenant always gets transported to the wrong place. Covenant is weak and helpless and his misfortunate companions drag him from point A to point B, then to point C while being attacked by various evils. Evil prevails and innocents die by the score, while Covenant always just manages to evade death. Covenant's timidity results in either the under or overuse of his power, which usually results in the deaths of more innocents. Somehow a few of the good guys manage to survive to fight another day.

The good news is that Covenant is not his usual whining self in this book. The bad news is that he has brought along a pal, Linden, to do the whining we are so used to. Covenant has become the Peter Sellers of heroes. He always blunders his way through a situation, but manages to end up with a successful solution.

One thing that I really hate about the whole series is the Ravers. Donaldson has created 3 immortal evil beings that keep coming back time after time. When their host is killed they simply take over some other creature or person. I hate it when a super powerful creature, weapon, form of magic, etc. is created in a story, then can't really be put into full use, because it's use would obviously end the story. Face it, if the Ravers really wanted Covenant dead he would have died in book one. They could take over one of his companions easily enough and cut off his head and his stupid ring finger while he slept. The all powerful Ravers appeared time and again in this story in various forms taking Covenant to the brink of death time and again only to back off instead of easily finishing him off. Why? The only reason is so that the series can continue to another book.

This book is somewhat dreary and depressing like the others, but there is enough interesting stuff happening that it is pretty entertaining. If you plan to read it, you had better keep a dictionary handy. Only book 2 of the series comes close to this one for the number of incomprehensible words used.

I actually liked this book the best of the series so far.

      5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!.......2007-05-17

I have the six books and I just bought the new one he wrote. These books are just awesome. Certainly NOT a Tolkie wannabe. Donaldson is a great writer.

5 out of 5 stars Best of all Thomas Covenant books........2007-04-08

Covenant finally shoulders the responsibility for The Land's survival and sheds the anti-hero persona that we found irritating. He is a hero in every sense of the word starting in The Wounded Land.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting world but heavy handed.......2007-02-06

I agree with many of the positive things people say about this book, except for the quality of the writing. It's about as subtle and finely crafted as chain saw sculpture. The shape and content are there but Donaldson just hammers his characters into rough shapes that don't remind me of real people.

The correspondent for The New York Times in Jerusalem from 1979 to 1984, David K. Shipler brings a very American moral commitment to the problem of Arab-Jewish relations. The occupation of the West Bank was by then a static fact of life; many young Israelis and Palestinians had grown up knowing no other reality. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the massacres of Palestinians by Lebanese militiamen at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, which were under Israeli control, had shaken the consciences of many American Jews. Many of the voices in this book are American, from idealistic young secular Jews working for Arab-Jewish cooperation to the more fanatical followers of Meir Kahane. This work, which won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, gives Shipler's narrative the power of a terrible family argument.

      Book Description

The Jew, according to the Arab stereotype, is a brutal, violent coward; the Arab, to the prejudiced Jew, is a primitive creature of animal vengeance and cruel desires. In this monumental work, revised and more relevant than ever, David Shipler delves into the origins of the prejudices that have been intensified by war, terrorism, nationalism, and the failure of the peace process.

"The best and most comprehensive work there is in the English language on this subject." (Walter Laqueur, The New York Times)

"A rich, penetrating, and moving portrayal of Arab-Jewish hostility, told in human terms." (Newsday)

4 out of 5 stars Deep and insightful; needs to be updated........2007-07-24

Vivid and personal descriptions of the prejudices, hatreds and mythologies that have become the modern middle-east conflict are richly interwoven with sociological survey data throughout this intriguing book. The author digs deeply into the recent history of this conflict, although he does not look so far back as to give what could be called an ancient historical perspective. Still, the writing is intense and telling, and his illumination of the psychology behind the conflict helps an outsider to understand some of the intricacies of the problems.

As an American, a secular Jew, and a liberal humanist, it was intriguing for me to have this conflict explained in such a balanced and painstaking manner. Interwoven anecdotes from the words and lives of real people opened up the heart of this conflict in a way that is difficult for most outsiders to perceive.

Even so, I was somewhat disappointed that the edition I read had not been updated to deal with much of the conflict in the past few intervening years, which include events such as the construction of the Israeli security wall, 9/11 and the Iraq war. The problem when dealing with modern events is, of course, that as events unfold the history is constantly being written and re-interpreted. Still, I think it behooves a student of current events to have such analysis dealt with in a text such as this.

Overall, I would recommend this as a must-read for any student of the modern middle-east, Israel, Palestine, or any of the other myriad related topics. The book overall is well-constructed, cohesive, and informative.

      3 out of 5 stars Enemies immortalized.......2006-12-10

This book is a description of life on the ground in Israel and Palestine for both Jews and Palestinians. Written by an American with years of experience in this part of the world, the book shows how individuals on both sides view the other, their leaders, and the greater world. Ironic and idiotic situations are portrayed of neighbors and co-workers adjusting to social norms and peer pressure, while trying to maintain relationships with individuals of the other race. The book shows how Israel and Jewish Israelis try to maintain an image of civilization and normalness while living in a state of occasional civil war. The book also shows how Palestinians are caught in a trap between trying to maintain their own society, yet being economically dependent on Jewish Israelis for business. Most importantly, the book describes how leaders on both sides play to the fears, hopes, and memories of their constituencies.

What the book does lack is a historical underpinning. Very little of the text is devoted to the history of how the Jewish state was founded, of how the intifada came about, or the birth of the PLO, or even the more recent Camp David accords. Instead, this book is more of a work of sociology instead of history, and hence left this reviewer dissatisfied. All in all, a good book, and deserving of the Pultizer Prize which it won. But since its original publication in the mid 1980's, there are many better works on the subject out there.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great........2005-11-10

I think the Author put a good attempt at painting a vague picture of these two groups and why the problems exist today. However, well written, it does leave out many of the surrounding facts outside the region that influenced both sides of this debate and the entire history of the region. If one is interested in a more indepth reading from a "leftist" point of view one might read "Secret War Against the Jews" - John Loftus or another very well written and factually presented writing would be "From Time Immemorial" - Joan Peters. If one wishes to read from the "Conservative" point of view I'd suggest "Battleground" - S. Katz, "A Will To Survive" - John Phillips or "6 Days of War" - Michael Oren. For an over all view and broader reading "A History of Israel" - H. Sacher.

When one reads these books it places a better image in the readers mind of what really went on to create such a morass within region. If one wishes to read something from a purely political point of view I would suggest either "The High Cost of Piece" - Y. Bodansky as well "The Oslo Years" - E. Horowitz.

This was a good attempt but I do feel it is very greyish with an underlying agenda that omits many important facts that puts this tragic situation into clear perspective.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting book.......2004-12-14

This book has plenty of fascinating anecdotes about the Jews and Arabs in Israel. And it is illuminating. We see negative stereotypes that each have for the other. More than that, I think this book shows some of the reasons why there isn't peace.

While some of the stereotypes are shown to be overstated, the reader will come away with a very negative picture of the people who live in the area. Some people appeared prepared to live, and some to let live, and a few weren't prepared to do either, but very few of the people Shipler showed us seemed ready to do both.

Shipler's description of Arab complaints about Israel were interesting. Sure, many Arabs said they had a devotion to their land. And that's why they needed it back from the Jews. But instead of reacting sympathetically, I asked myself if they were for real. If I were to act the same way, what would I do? Demand, as a descendant of Tatars who were evicted from what is now Yalta, that the Muslim Tatars get Yalta back? Or demand, as a Pagan, that the Dome of the Rock be removed so that we could restore the Temple of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva?

I rarely see Arabs demand land "back" that is now lived on by other Arabs. Nor would it make sense to anyone to "return" Warsaw to the Jews. Worse, it seemed to me that many Arabs were saying that they would do Anything to get their land back ... except pay for it. And that they would insist on being true Israeli citizens, except they wouldn't fight for Israel! Since I'd never want to live in a country I couldn't support, I found it hard to sympathize with the attitudes of many Israeli Arabs.

Shipler explained to us a common Arab complaint that the Jews are punishing the Arabs for Jewish misfortunes in Europe. But this complaint grossly underestimates Arab blame for what happened to many Jews. And it also tacitly and incorrectly assumes that it should be a crime for Jews to live near Arabs.

Almost all the Jews Shipler described had given plenty of thought to whether overall Jewish behavior made sense. They came up with different answers. But they left me with the impression that if they ever had a chance to make good policy decisions, most of them would do it. That's not the impression I got about the Arabs he depicted.

I think Shipler failed to show us the big picture in this conflict. And to me, the main point is that the Jews have rather little land. In the long run, if everyone chooses peace, the Jews probably will wind up with at least as much land as they now have. The Jews have options. They can fight. They can make allies. They can flee. They can even convert. Yes, they can get badly hurt. But my point is that they have shown great resiliance and have surprisingly little to lose. Their land has few resources. In my opinion, contrary to popular belief, they might well survive the loss of several wars.

Meanwhile, the Arab side is unlikely to lose a big war. But their Empire would be gone if they ever lost one. They have an enormous amount of land and huge resources, and seem to act as though they can't lose it. Instead, there is a huge focus on fighting a war for an arbitrary cause which, if they win it, will give them virtually nothing.

Finally, this whole struggle is being fought primarily between those who believe Jews ought to have human rights in Israel and those who do not. That's not very symmetrical. I have to ask myself if Shipler was helping anyone by allowing folks to get the impression that these two points of view are equally valid. Perhaps it would have been better if he had taken a stand, and simply said that both sides are hurting. And that the Arabs have a choice to make: do they want it to be better for everyone or worse for everyone? That would have allowed me to give his book a couple more stars.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing for some reason.......2004-08-01

I can't quite put a finger on why I was let down by this book; Shipler is an excellent writer and most of the stories in the book are simply great. He seems to excel in finding the perfect anecdote for each situation, so that even though many of the people interviewed hold similar views, each seems to add a new angle to the argument rather than being repetitive. On the other hand, this book seems to have no point. As a collection of stories and personal testimony, it has no equal. But in the end, the narrative just kind of trails off into oblivion; Shipler offers neither solutions nor suggestions, not even direction. Given, he admits at the start of the book that such direction is difficult, if not impossible to offer. But you'd think that especially after revising the book following the collapse of the Oslo Accords, he'd have something to say, some greater point to offer. But, unfortunately, nothing is there, and it seems to harm an otherwise wonderfully written collection.

      Book Description

This is the official edition of an important U.S. Army field manual (FM) dealing with "the law of land warfare" and such important topics as:

Rules and Principles of the Law of Land Warfare
      Hostilities
Prisoners of War - Persons entitled and not entitled to be treated as POWs
      Wounded and Sick
      Civilians
      Occupation
      War Crimes
      Geneva Conventions

In the first chapter, it states: "The purpose of this Manual is to provide authoritative guidance to military personnel on the customary and treaty law applicable to the conduct of warfare on land and to relationships between belligerents and neutral States. Although certain of the legal principles set forth herein have application to warfare at sea and in the air as well as to hostilities on land, this Manual otherwise concerns itself with the rules peculiar to naval and aerial warfare only to the extent that such rules have some direct bearing on the activities of land forces. This Manual is an official publication of the United States Army. However, those provisions of the Manual which are neither statutes nor the text of treaties to which the United States is a party should not be considered binding upon courts and tribunals applying the law of war. However, such provisions are of evidentiary value insofar as they bear upon questions of custom and practice. The conduct of armed hostilities on land is regulated by the law of land warfare which is both written and unwritten. It is inspired by the desire to diminish the evils of war by: Protecting both combatants and noncombatants from unnecessary suffering; Safeguarding certain fundamental human rights of persons who fall into the hands of the enemy, particularly prisoners of war, the wounded and sick, and civilians; and Facilitating the restoration of peace."

This manual is produced by Headquarters, US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

            Book Description

Since winning the Pulitzer for his Glengarry Glen Ross, playwright David Mamet has written only one original, full-length play, Speed-the-Plow-yet he has written nearly ten original screenplays. His movement in this direction is both surprising and, ironically, inevitable. Studied here are Mamet's screenplays (such as The Postman Always Rings Twice and We're No Angels), the influence of film on his recent plays (The Shawl and Speed-the-Plow), his theory of directing refined from his "writerly" principles of montage storytelling, and the reciprocal impact of his films and plays are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the author-director relationship in House of Games and Things Change. A complete filmography includes his 1992 work on the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross and Hoffa.

                    Book Description

After a near miss by a white-hot protoplanet, Earth is devastated, civilization as we know it has ended, and the survivors are reverting to barbarism. Only the Kronian colony on Saturn's moons preserves technology and human culture. Landen Keene, taken off the Earth before the disaster, is a key figure in the Kronian efforts to rebuild civilization on Earth. Then he finds that other survivors from Earth miss the power they once wielded, and are bent on restoring the old privileges and hierarchy, with themselves at the top. And if subtle methods fail, they won't hesitate to use the violent tactics that served them well back on Earth. . . .

I'm not very familiar with Hogan's works, though I have enjoyed some of his collaborations. This is one of the very, again, very, few books I simply didn't want to finish. The social structure he describes for the Kronians is simply too laboured to be believable even in context. The story itself is buried under the mass of verbiage used to describe the social, historical, and scientific setting of Hogan's, er, uh story(?). It may be that a platoon of Reader's Digest Condensed Book editors could have made this tome readable, but then it would have been, at best, a novella or perhaps no more than a short story.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Conflict of Worldviews.......2003-10-24

The Anguished Dawn is the sequel to Cradle of Saturn. In the previous volume, a new planet, Athena, has been ejected from Jupiter in a Velikovskian scenario, ravaging the Earth and disrupting orbits. A few people have been evacuated off the planet by the Kronians and resettled on the moons of Saturn. Athena has passed beyond the Earth, but continues to disrupt the inner-system with its gravitic attraction, electrical discharges, and poisonous tail. Moreover, smaller debris from this ejection are still sweeping through space as far out as the Kronian colonies, impacting on planets, moons and manmade objects.

In this novel, Landen Keene leads a group of Kronian engineers developing an dual-purpose fusion-plant, producing both thrust and electrical power, thus providing mobile temporary power for settlements and work camps. He is on LORIN 5 above Saturn learning about orbital operations, when a cluster of objects is detected in an orbit intersecting both Titan and Rhea. The Long Range Intercept Station launches heavy-metal lasing rods at the most dangerous objects, but does not have enough to dissipate the whole cluster. People on both moons are killed and the Security Arm training center on Rhea is demolished.

After his memorable visit to LORIN 5, Lan returns to Titan for a meeting with his boss, Pang-Yarbat, and a potential addition to their group, Jan Wernstecki. After Pang and Lan describe their development of electrogravitic devices, Jan is definitely sold on changing jobs.

After this meeting, Lan has drinks with Ludwig Grasse and Claud Valcroix, European governmental officials who had evacuated from the planet through the Eurospace facilities in Algeria. Ludwig sounds out Lan's willingness to participate in a political effort to achieve power for the Terran survivors. Although Lan is not interested, he acts noncommittal to draw out more information.

Lan's close friend Vicki is working in the Planetary Sciences section of Kropotkin's Polysophic Academy. She and her boss, Farzhin, have been delving ever deeper into the Vedas and other ancient literature to discover more about the catastrophic changes that have occurred within the Solar System. Now they have invited Sariena and Charley Hu to a briefing on their latest discoveries.

Vicki's son Robin has been moody and despondent since their evacuation and is considering leaving school to join the Security Arm. When Lan talks to him, Robin is brusque and noncommunicative.

This story is about a clash of cultures. The Kronians had originally settled on the moons of Saturn to get away from the intense competition between individuals and groups on Earth. Over the decades, the Kronians have developed a cooperative society that values individual competence over material wealth. In fact, the Kronians have no means of exchange, but rather everything is available to anyone. Now they have an influx of self-selected immigrants, many of whom are firm practitioners of competitive and even cutthroat tactics.

Although some of the Terran survivors try to explain the danger, the Kronians are naive enough to believe that they are not in any danger from these powermongers. They learn their lesson the hard way.

These story also involves some Terran survivors who experienced the catastrophe first-hand, a group of the left-behind. The contrast of these hunter-gathers with the technological sophistication of the Kronians increases the suspense and impact.

The philosophical differences between the Terrans and the Kronians are discussed to some extent, but the story itself contrasts the different consequences of these apprproaches. Essentially, the story illustrates the destructive effects of the Terran methods and the creative effects of the Kronian approach.

Recommended for Hogan fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of cutting edge technology and truly different human cultures.

4 out of 5 stars post apocalyptic non-stop action thriller.......2003-07-05

Though it was nearly Worlds in Collision, but actually the orb missed a direct hit on the Earth, but still the aftereffect destroyed the land masses and oceans, polarity, and ecosystems leading to the end of civilization though survivors exist. The last remnant of Earth culture resides on the Saturn moon of Kronia. Kronians have two strategic goals that of reaching the stars and rebuilding the Earth.

When the Earth finally stabilizes, former resident Landen Keene joins the first Kronian expeditionary force establishing a planetary base to explore building a Utopian world where contribution to society rules. However, many of those who managed to escape the consequences of planetary destruction did so because they wielded the power and wealth to flee to Kronia. These Pragmatists plan to regain their status of domination. Two groups isolated by the vastness of space from the only human civilization battle while those who remained behind want to obliterate any returnee regardless of their philosophy.

Though loaded with action, readers will be split over James P. Hogan's latest science fiction thriller that in some ways feels like an Irwin Allen movie. The story line leaps nicely from the events chronicled in CRADLE OF SATURN (though it helps to have read that book first). However, the plot concentrates on the mass destruction at the cost of failing to fully explore an interesting philosophical debate between two divergently thinking groups and in turn never truly develops key cast members except somewhat Landen. Only readers who enjoy a post apocalyptic earth with non-stop action that defies gravity will want to peruse THE ANGUISHED DAWN.

This is the textbook I used in college for second year Greek. It covers all the fundamentals one might need for that next step in their Greek studies. It is not far-reaching in scope, but that is in keeping with its stated goals: "This book is not offered as an exhaustive treatment of the grammatical phenomena of the Greek New Testament" (from the preface). However, the book systematically covers all the features of New Testament Greek that one needs to secure a sound footing in the language.
I would recommend the book for independent study and as a reference tool.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Truly Indispensable Handbook.......2005-10-11

This Greek grammar, which is most accurately described as a condensed form of Robertson's and Moulton's literature, is genius. By genius, of course, I mean there is no other book quite like it. A much more popular volume today is the more recent grammar by Daniel Wallace, but Dana and Mantey provide all the content at less than half the size. Admittedly, Wallace is good to have on the shelf, but this book is what I carry to class and actually use on a regular basis.

At the beginning of each section, this book provides references to the larger works by Robertson and Moulton. Although not necessary, it is very beneficial to read those references as directed, especially those in Robertson. This book is supposed to come with a chart of verb conjugations in the back, but if it is missing (as it was in mine), there is an identical chart in the back of Essentials of New Testament Greek by Ray Summers.

In my opinion, this grammar should be the standard for any student of the New Testament; it really is that good. It is regrettably hard to find; however, and along those lines also expensive. Give this grammar a chance, it will soon become your favorite.

I learned Greek grammar from the golden gems of knowledge by Dana and Mantey. Having already studied Summers and Sawyer, this book by Dana and Mantey proved to be invaluable to describe the nuances of Greek grammar which in turn led to clearer exegesis. Thanks to Dr. Delnay, who was taught by Dr. Mantey, for using this book in second-year Greek class at Clearwater Christian College.

Not even the recent sorties by Young and Mounce have managed to unseat this all-time classic. For ease of use and lucid explanations, this grammar is solid gold! Despite claims to the contrary, this grammar is still as fresh as the day it rolled off the press and as relevant as anything being published today. Recent attempts have been made to improve upon it (e.g. Brooks and Winbury) but it remains unmatched for accuracy and readability. Discover it today!
