Book Description
Seventeen-year-old Matt "Owl" Owen is living in the heyday between school and the rest of his life. He has his friends, the beach, and the surf -- and the big event on his calendar is a date with Hayley Churchill, an absolute goddess. When she asked him to take her to Stink's eighteenth birthday, Owl thought he'd die. Is it possible his best friend's sister has finally come to her senses, or is Owl just putting himself on?
It's supposed to be the best summer of his life, a final hurrah before Owl and his buddies are forced to grow up and start the next phase of life, but he and his surfing crew are about to get dragged kicking and screaming into the adult world -- and nothing will ever be the same again.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Book.......2006-04-27
I read this going into my senior year of high school and it instantly became one of my favorite books. Definately can relate to the teenage life with the surf culture thrown in. A great summer book and a great fictional surfing book. Definately recommend it. Only thing is it takes a little while to get used to the australian terms if you don't know them.
A Great Book.......2003-12-09
Summer is everyone's favorite part of the year. Some people go to camp, some people travel, and others go to the beach. Last Wave by Paul Hayden is about all of the people that go to the beach. People that go to the beach are different than regular people. At the beach everyone is friend with everyone and there is just one big gang. This summer is the last summer the gang s before they all move on to the real world.
One thing in the book that I love is the opening page. The first page dives right in without any introduction.
HE HOLDS MY FOOT IN HIS HANDS AS HE'S TALKING TO ME.
"The bone is fusing itself."
"What do you mean?"
"Just what I said. The cartilage has deteriorated and because of that the bones start to rub together-and as they rub they cause a sort of sediment that actually builds up and stiffens the joint."
"Christ..." I sort of gasp quietly, and sink down a little further in the chair.
I like that a lot because you don't have the unnecessary information. Last Wave starts in the middle of conversation. This beginning is very unique I have not seen a opening like this in a book so when I saw this I knew it was going to be good. It was good to start the book with somebody breaking there foot because there is a lot of action to this. "Bones Fusing" that is so cool!
There is only one thing that I didn't like about the book: there was a lot of cursing. I can see there being a little bit but of put is just goes past the limits. But it got to the point where it started to be a little much.
I think I'm studying a knot in the wood, trying to remember what *******ing planet I am on.
"What's up, Mate?"
"This is a *******in' waist of time."
"We know that-what's your *******in' problem?"
Hayden's language other wise is exactly how a teen would talk. Since Hayden uses language that is very appealing to the teenage reader. This book would not be suited for an older person or middle-aged person unless they were interested in seeing how teens talk.
The two main characters are Hayley and Matt. Matt is the innocent good friend. Hayley is that girl that nobody can have. Hayley and Matt have been friends forever. They have grown up together and have that brother-sister type relationship. Butt when Matt try's to make it something else there is a disaster.
The book is very real and that is why is why I am raving about it. The way that Hayden describes these beach bums is exactly how they are. To my knowledge Hayden was one of those kids. Hayden describes it so well because he has lived it. He describes the surf and the party's like you are there. There is a character named Hayley Churchill that Matt describes as a "goddess." Matt has had his eye on Hayley Churchill for a long time. Matt thought that he would never have a chance with Hayley but a sudden chain of events happens. Hayley decides to ask Matt to Stink's party. Stinks part is suppose to be the biggest party of the year. So naturally Matt is excited that he is going with Hayley. So he and Hayley are going and something happens that changes Matt's whole opinion on her. This conflict is great and it is very realistic or it happens to teens all of the time. All and all Last Wave was a great book and I highly recommend it.
Not My Kind Of Book.......2003-10-03
"Last Wave" is a novel about a surfer named Owl, who finds out that he has degenerative arthritis in his feet, and may never be able to surf again. Which is why he spends his Summer surfing and hanging out with his closest friends. But it's not all fun and games, for he learns about love, loss, death, birth, etc.
I found this book to be based on an extremely interesting concept, yet executed in a distasteful way. Owl and his friends go out drinking every night, they smoke pot, they sleep around. It's somewhat disgusting. What bothered me the most, was seeing that EVERY SINGLE sentence had the "F" word in it. And I'm not kidding about this. It was absolutely repulsive. So repulsive that I could not continue reading the book. My overall opinion is that this book is disgusting, and I plan on NEVER reading another book by Mr. Paul Hayden, unless he cleans up his language.

Totally Awesome Dude..........2003-08-08
I picked this book up at the library and it looked really good. So good when I started reading it I never put it down till I turned the last page. Owl has to over come alot in this small pocket book, but he does it gracefully. With one of his loves no longer with him, he feel guilt and sorrow. Beautifully written and the story proceed's with excellent pace. Would be a great read for surfers or beach bums, relaxing on the beach.
An End-Of-Innocence Story--Beautifully Done.......2003-07-27
Matt Owen, known to his "mates" as Owl, is enjoying his last summer fling after high school, surfing on the east coast of Australia, and getting ready for his first date with Hayley Churchill, who is going with him to the big dance. He has dreamed of this moment for years. Hayley is his best friend's sister and--well--a goddess. Things couldn't be any better.
But then, within ten minutes, his dream date turns to dust. He doesn't see Hayley again for the rest of the evening, and--without revealing too much of the plot--the evening ends in tragedy. The remainder of the book tells how Matt and his teen-aged friends deal with these events.
The story moves along quickly, taking the reader into the inner world of Matt and his young friends, their struggles, their hurts, and their loss of innocence. The dialogue is snappy and smart, written in teen-age Aussie slang. The characters grow on you. The events are believable. Toward the end, I think, the story tends to get bogged down in in a bit of sentimentality, but this is a minor flaw. The book is an enjoyable read and I recommend it. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber

Book Description
When Clio, the Muse of History, sat down to pen the twenty-eighth volume in the Chronicles of Xanth, she was stunned to discover it was already there! And, what was worse, it was totally unreadable, for the words on its pages were fuzzed beyond comprehension.Vexed and bewildered, and more than a little concerned, Clio resolved to leave the quiet comfort of her study on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, and ask her old friend, the Good Magician Humfrey, to search a solution to her problem in his Book of Answers. But, much to her consternation, Humfrey required her to perform a magical Service before she could acquire her Answer: to rescue Xanth's dragons from the verge of extinction before the delicate balance of its wildlife was permanently thrown out of whack. Her momentous mission lead her to a dangerous Dragon World hidden amongst the Moons of Ida, across a perilous landscape filled with wonder and danger, in search of the fabled Currant, a very rare red berry that might hold the secret she sought. Along the way she acquired a fellowship of companions, including the brave and beautiful Becka Dragongirl, a pair of pocket dragons named Drew and Drusie, a charming young child called Ciriana whose destiny was somehow entwined with hers, and Sherlock, a sweet but homely man from Mundania who might just be a master magician himself.Together they gradually began to unravel the momentous mystery of Xanth's missing history. And Clio began to realize that Sherlock's enchantments had begun to work their way into her heart.

A Blooming Romance.......2006-10-16
Currant Events (2004) is the twenty-eighth Fantasy novel in the Xanth series, following Cube Route. Clio and her eight sisters are the Muses of Xanth. As the Muse of History, Clio writes the various volumes of the Xanth saga.
In this novel, Clio discovers that the 28th volume of the history of Xanth is unreadable. Moreover, she cannot quite remember what it is about. She decides to take the problem to the Good Magician Humfrey.
At the Good Magician's castle, Clio is treated as a querent! How could he treat a friend with such rudeness? Going along with his charade, Clio solves her three Challenges and enters the castle. When she explains her problem to Humfrey, he states that she needs a magic currant berry to solve her problem.
First, however, she must obtain five breeding pairs of each type of dragon on Dragon World and bring them to Xanth to replace the rapidly dying native dragons. She has a week to accomplish this first assignment. To guide her path, Humfrey places a magic compass/timer in her wrist to tell her which direction to travel and how long she has to complete each travel segment.
On Dragon World, Clio saves two tiny dragon lovers from being eaten and they vow to accompany her until this service is repaid. Since Drew and Drusie are telepathic and winged, they greatly help in the quest. Besides, they are small enough to fit into her pockets.
The dragon lovers introduce Clio to the leaders of each dragon type and translate their conversations. Of course, dragon assistance is not free; Clio has to win a visible riddling contest with each of the five leaders. Her stakes in each contest are her life and the lives of her friends, but she also has to remove one item of clothing selected by the dragons for each lost point.
Of course, Clio wins all five contests and arranges to take the selected couples back to Xanth. She goes on to other adventures, solving problems for other people and collecting items along the way to solve her own problem. She also collects fellow travelers, including Sherlock -- who has a reversing talent -- and Ciriana -- a young girl immune to the Adult Conspiracy -- and others who help in her travels.
This story is chock full on puns -- the acknowledgments list is about three pages long -- and ends with a twist. In other worlds, a typical Xanth novel, with promises of more to come. A great read for most (except for critics).
Highly recommended for Xanth fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of humor, atrocious puns and light romance. If you are not familiar with this series, please start with A Spell for Chameleon so that you don't miss any of the fun.

PA is going into the dirty old man phase.......2006-03-23
I have been reluctant to buy any of PA's books for awhile now since he seems to have been going more to the sex side of the stories than the original fun Xanth puns etc.
While the 'adult conspiracy' has been present from the beginning the innocence angle of the series is gone and the plot lines now seem geared more toward the full revelation of the 'adult conspiracy' than the quests and fun of the earlier works. I am saddened by PA's change in content and think that this will by my last contribution to his coffers. If I want sexual content this is not the venue I would be looking at!
Currant Events.......2005-11-30
I know I am in a minority but this has to be the most boring, and poorly written book I have read in a long. The description of people and places left me with very little to work with pictorally. I have been writing short stories for children for many years so I don't lack imagination.
I will try other of his books but if they are a bad as this one I will probably give up on his work as a source of entertainment.
Beat the winter doldrums.......2004-12-27
If the holiday season has you down and a good laugh, chuckle or chortle is all you need, then this is the one for you. You do have to like science fiction and fantasy and not be looking for a SAGA. This and all the others in the Xanth series are full of punish humor and silliness. There are underlying themes from the world of mundania, which are cloaked in Xanth's exagerated & colorful culture. These themes are a little like fractured fables and deal with moral dilemas. Piers Anthony has a way of addressing these issues in very subtle ways.
It is always fun to see old names and talents surface, advance just a little in character development, then await their next adventure. New faces are added, given a foundation and they too are held in waiting for their next assist in an adventure. As you may have noticed, I am a Xanth fan from waaaay back and have read all 28 in this series.
Although,I wasn't overly enthusiastic about the last 3 or 4 books, this 1st of a "trilogy" holds great promise or "pun-ishment" for dye hard fans. I am looking forward to the new episodes alluded to in this book. I wonder what the stork will bring for Sherlock and Clio?
Hopeless pun addict..........2004-10-17
This most recent installment in Anthony's Xanth series was definitely worth the wait. I received it yesterday in the mail and finished it last night. I just could not put it down... but almost all Anthony's books are like that.
Currant Events follows Anthony's recent trend with the Xanth books, being a bit more risque and broaching more controversial topics than the first twenty or so books of the series. He does it so tastefully, however, that you don't seem to mind the innocence and integrity of the series perhaps being shaken up a bit.
Some of my favorite parts of this book were Clio's visit to Dragon World, and the description given of that world, as well as the little girl whose talent is immunity to the Adult Conspiracy (I think that was my talent growing up too!) and the re-introduction of Sherlock Black into the series.
If you've never read a Xanth book before, treat yourself and start at the beginning of the series. For the rest of us, this is definitely a keeper, and according to Anthony's Author's Note, just the beginning of another 3-cubed trilogy.

Uninspired and dated sequel to "When Worlds Collide".......2005-07-11
"After World's Collide" picks up right where "When Worlds Collide" left off. Earth has been destroyed after colliding with a wayward star which, luckily enough brought another planet along for the interstellar ride. A raw deal for Earth turns into a major jackpot for a few human survivors - the new planet settles into orbit perfectly. At this point, the novel could present its characters with the challenge of making a life on the new world for themselves. Unfortunately, this slim novel has little time for characters who rise to the occasion. Instead, "After" has our characters (already on a lucky-streak) discover a huge city left behind by the planet's original inhabitants. Apparently not that far removed from the human newcomers, the original natives did not survive the interstellar trip, but left their cities in perfect shape for the human refugees - right down to stocks of apparently edible food. In a more enlightened time, "After" would have had our characters discover that even a peachy-life in a new world has its downsides - as the Vikings discovered when they starved to death despite finding paradise in Greenland.
Rather than learn the natural limits of their new world, "After" turns dated and moralistic - pitting the good survivors against another group, the bad survivors who escaped on a rocket built by hardcore Stalinists. These enemies commandeer the largest of the alien cities, and choke off power to the smaller ones (meaning the ones occupied by the "good humans"). Will good win out over bad? I was more interested in whether the either of the two would wake up and realize that their war might threaten the planet. Just how dated is this story? The good survivors are led by a Moses figure who hints at the bad survivors in biblical terms - Midianites, he calls them. The novel never hints at the possibility that the miraculous feat of planetary physics that brought the new world to our solar system may have been off - with the planet either flying into the sun, or taking a hostile orbit, or simply careening away into the void again, looking for another, less complicated species with which to selflessly bring its promise of a new life.

Ignore the flaws, enjoy classic science fiction.......2006-11-13
After looking over all the other reviews, I agree it's politically flawed by our modern standards. But remember when it was written - that was the view then and the coming war was very real. And if we derided everything that happens to be politically or scientifically flawed nowadays, we wouldn't have anything other that pop literature to read.
So ignore a couple of things and instead enjoy it for what it is - a great example of absolutely classic science fiction. It's an obscure gem (although not as rare as the lost sequel to War of the Worlds).
Marvel in the alien technology that survived thew deep freeze journey across the unimaginably vast reaches of space. Let your imagination soar and consider what other unseen technologies might still exist on this world (television, star ships, a world-wide web?).
Enjoy it for what it is and you'll have a great read.
Great Old Time Sci-Fi.......2005-04-15
I would have given this one 4 1/2 stars, but I didn't have that option. This book and its predecessor are two of the greatest sci-fi books I have ever read and read and read. I have re-read them at least 5 times since I first read them as a teenager. In fact I still have the books I bought as a teenager!
This story is a slight let-off from the first book, but extremely enjoyable. Even when re-reading it I still find myself hoping to find a resident alien around the corner.
It's a monumental epic struggle to save the human race and the trials and tribulations of the last remaining humans after the world is destroyed. It's a little predictable, but you have to put the book in to perspective to the time it was written. Yes it's a little political, but that was what was going on at the time.
I would recommend this book and the first book, When World Collide, to anyone, you won't be disappointed.

A sci-fi classic must-read!.......2004-03-13
I read "When Worlds Collide" and "After Worlds Collide" as a teen in the sixties. In a time of war and the Cuban missle crisis, these books gave me hope, and the fantasies tantalized the far reaches of my imagination. I dreamed of being on a far-off world and finding a domed city to explore. A fairy tale, perhaps....hey, it COULD happen! I couldn't find these in the local library, so I'm buying them to read with my sons, now in their early teens! Sweet dreams!

READER OF MANY BOOKS.......2007-08-26
I READ ALOT AND MOST BOOKS ARE ENTERTAINING. SOME BOOKS ARE MORE. THIS BOOK FITS IN THE LATTER. IT KEPT ME UP LATE SEVERAL NIGHTS. MANY CHAPTERS END IN SUSPENSE THEREFORE KEEPING YOU READING. A FEW THINGS I DID NOT LIKE BUT THEY WERE SMALL SO I DID NOT TAKE A STAR AWAY. THE BOOKS ENDS ABRUPTLY,LEAVING YOU FEELING A LITTLE UNSATISFIED. WITH ONLY A FEW PAGES LEFT AND THINGS UNRESOLVED, I KEPT THINKING THAT THERE WAS NO WAY THAT IT COULD END PROPERLY. THE ROMANCE IS A LITTLE IRRITATING. THIS WAS A BOOK THAT KEPT ME THINKING ABOUT IT LONG AFTER FINISHING IT.
Classic Sci-Fi!.......2007-05-20
I first read this back in the early 80's and because of it, fell in love with science fiction.
The book describes the death of the Earth in horrifying detail. The Noah's Ark theme is classic, where a group of survivors board rockets (arks) in order to escape the destruction of the planet. All in all, the authors give a good story, rich with adventure, emotion and incredible new worlds.
Not perfectly explainable in terms of science, but enjoyable even today.
Classic really holds up!.......2005-07-25
I first read When Worlds Collide/After Worlds Collide in the 1960's, while in junior high school. They were my introduction into what I considered adult science fiction, and I was hooked! After thinking about them for years, I finally ordered them, hoping the books would not disapoint so years many later. The themes are just as current today, though the prejudices and some science are certainly outdated. I highly recommend this book for pleasurable reading as well as a look into science fiction writing from the 1930's. Note that this volumn contains BOTH books bound together.
Great Old Time Sci-Fi.......2005-04-15
This book and its sequel are two of the greatest sci-fi books I have ever read and read and read. I have re-read them at least 5 times since I first read them as a teenager. In fact I still have the books I bought as a teenager!
It's a monumental epic struggle to save the human race and the trials and tribulations of a group of scientists as they prepare to save the human race. It's also a look in to the dark side of man when faced with annihilation and too much time to contemplate it.
I would recommend this book and the second book, After Worlds Collide, to anyone, you won't be disappointed.
Clearing up some confusion..........2005-01-23
Many of the earlier reviews on this site call for a reissue of the sequel, "After Worlds Collide". Please note: BOTH STORIES, "When Worlds Collide" and "After Worlds Collide", are contained in this paperback version. The title is misleading because it only includes "When..." -- but both stories are there.
Other reviewers have correctlly noted that there are some scientific inaccuracies, and some 1930s political and social views that seem out of place today. Who cares?! This is a wonderful story. In part 1, the authors concoct an excellent apocalyptic scenario. And in part 2, their conception of the alien planet is brilliant.
This is a very well-told yarn.
Customer Reviews:
An unusual treatise on sanctity.......2007-09-20
This is one of the best books I have read on a saint, and in this case Von Balthasar writes about two saints, not just one. His chapter on Therese's "Little Way" is outstanding (and can be found online...that's how I discovered this wonderful book). I especially enjoyed the chapter entitled "Shadows", in which the author squarely addresses the issue of weaknesses often retained by true saints. This book is not for those who wish to hold on to a plaster image of sanctity, in which holiness is removed from humanity and vulnerability. Highly recommended for everyone else!
Therese and ELizabeth.......2000-08-13
These combined works of von Balthasar on two Carmelite nuns, St. Therese of Lisieux and Bl. Elizabeth of the Trinity, offers exceptional insights to their particular spiritualities and their role in the Church. The part focusing on Therese is perhaps best read with an already established knowlege of the saint. Be prepared to totally change the way you think of the "Little Flower"! This is probably not a good book for those just becoming familiar with Therese, but for those who have read nearly all she has written (Story of a Soul, Letters, Poems, etc.) von Balthasar's thoughts will be a fascinating read. This book sheds some very interesting light on other works of Therese when you go back to read them a second time! This is the best book I've read on Therese. The section on Bl. Elizabeth is considerably shorter, but the book is worth buying for it alone. Her simple "way," the praise of the glory of God's grace, is eloquently illuminated by von Balthasar. In a word, beautiful... I highly recommend this book for all lovers of Carmel, and for anyone who has stumbled upon the greatness of these two women.
