2 out of 5 stars A random, blurry, dream sequence that never ends!.......2005-11-22

I have enjoyed extremely some other works by H. L. Davis, most notably the novel Winds of Morning, and the beautifully executed short story, "The Homestead Orchard." It was with pleasurable anticipation that I obtained Davis's prizewinning magnum opus.

But this monstrosity totally surprised me. The historical basis of Oregon's history and geography is two fanciful. The characters are not well-developed and are cartoonish. I can stand fantasy sequences (loved Dickens's Little Dorrit), but this exhausted my patience. I kept waiting to reach the good part. I should have given up after the first 100 pages.

5 out of 5 stars An Oregonian Saga - Well Done.......2004-06-12

A well-told tale of settling of Oregon in the first decade of the 20th Century. This Pulitzer Prize winning novel captures the spirit of the times as those hardy pioneers struggle to settle a difficult land. Mr. Davis' wry humor makes this a readers delight. Having lived in the general area as a youth I found many of the incidents sounding like the seemingly endless tales that my father and his collegues would spend hours swapping.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable story.......2004-02-01

The book tells and interesting story of a young man in southern and eastern Oregon in about 1910 after the big pioneer rush. Very well written with good characters. It won the Pulitzer prize in 1935.

5 out of 5 stars an absorbing account of a little known period in Oregon.......1999-11-09

This book was impossible to put down. It is an absorbing novel set in (apparently) early 1900s Oregon. It is well researched as to the history and conditions prevailing in a country always hard to live in. And it is a rollicking good story.

Book Description

Honey bees--and the qualities associated with them--have quietly influenced American values for four centuries. During every major period in the country's history, bees and beekeepers have represented order and stability in a country without a national religion, political party, or language.

Bees in America is an enlightening cultural history of bees and beekeeping in the United States. Tammy Horn, herself a beekeeper, offers a varied social and technological history from the colonial period, when the British first introduced bees to the New World, to the present, when bees are being used by the American military to detect bombs. Early European colonists introduced bees to the New World as part of an agrarian philosophy borrowed from the Greeks and Romans. Their legacy was intended to provide sustenance and a livelihood for immigrants in search of new opportunities, and the honey bee became a sign of colonization, alerting Native Americans to settlers' westward advance. Colonists imagined their own endeavors in terms of bees' hallmark traits of industry and thrift and the image of the busy and growing hive soon shaped American ideals about work, family, community, and leisure.

The image of the hive continued to be popular in the eighteenth century, symbolizing a society working together for the common good and reflecting Enlightenment principles of order and balance. Less than a half-century later, Mormons settling Utah (where the bee is the state symbol) adopted the hive as a metaphor for their protected and close-knit culture that revolved around industry, harmony, frugality, and cooperation. In the Great Depression, beehives provided food and bartering goods for many farm families, and during World War II, the War Food Administration urged beekeepers to conserve every ounce of beeswax their bees provided, as more than a million pounds a year were being used in the manufacture of war products ranging from waterproofing products to tape.

The bee remains a bellwether in modern America. Like so many other insects and animals, the bee population was decimated by the growing use of chemical pesticides in the 1970s. Nevertheless, beekeeping has experienced a revival as natural products containing honey and beeswax have increased the visibility and desirability of the honey bee. Still a powerful representation of success, the industrious honey bee continues to serve both as a source of income and a metaphor for globalization as America emerges as a leader in the Information Age.

Beekeeping in the American historical context.

Though the text is a bit academic, I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. I read it in about 3 days. The numerous ways that the honey bee and beekeeping has woven themselves into our history and culture is fascinating. Ms. Horn has done some tremendous research on the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty lame if you are a beekeeper..........2005-10-24

I've been keeping bees for 40 years and during that time have assimilated a lot of info from trade journals, academic texts, etc. I was pretty bored with the whole thing. I was not expecting a technical book but I just found it poorly edited.

5 out of 5 stars Bees In America: How The Honey Bee Shaped A Nation.......2005-07-20

Excellent review of history of bees-beekeeping in America from a historical, cultural and global perspective. It is not a technically laden text. This would be a great book for extra credit reading - discussion for an American History college/university course. It is highly recommended for both general and scholarly readers.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read !.......2005-06-12

This is a very enjoyable book. The author has taken a relatively unknown topic ( unless you're a beekeeper ), and written a book that is simply very interesting. She's blended history, science, economics, and even religion into a book that is easy to read. How did that jar of honey get into your shop ?
Why are people as diverse as rocker Tom Petty, disco diva Gloria Gaynor, and actor Peter Fonda included in a book about bees ? Not only did I learn why, but I liked the way the author took us on a journey thru bee-land.

5 out of 5 stars The Mage Storms.......2007-05-07

Three books that are total adventure, not just for young adults.
The stories are rich, full of color with wonderfuly well formed characters
so well developed that you can live the story with them as if you were in their shoes.
I can only think of The Mages Storms as one book however all three are great in themselves, very enjoyable adventure.
                  Excellent author.

                  3 out of 5 stars A Serious Letdown.......2006-03-15

I'm sorry to say I have to agree with those reviewers who didn't like this book. I'm a fan of Valdemar and especially the "Arrows" Trilogy and "By the Sword," but this book was a disappointment. I was bored by the effort of trying to keep track of (and care about) a dozen or more "main" characters, and I found much of the plot to be predictable and lacking suspense. Sadly, it's a letdown, given how much I enjoyed some of the other books in this series.

2 out of 5 stars could have been better? Damn straight........2005-12-17

I just had to throw my two cents in when I saw this book had four stars. I got it when it first came out in hard cover, because I couldn't stand the wait. Absolute waste of money and time. The whole storm series was not very good, but this one did it. This one stopped me buying her books.

                  5 out of 5 stars My fave.......2005-05-26

I actually liked this book the best of the three. The only part I didn't like were the passages about what was going on in the empire. Who cares? My favorite parts of the book were actually the ones about Tremane and his ascension. I liked his character a lot and I loved how the change was made in him from the first two books.

3 out of 5 stars Lackey took things as far as they could go..........2004-05-21

With this book (and this series, really), Lackey stretched the credibility of her world too far. She hasn't quite reached the depths that Anne McCaffery's late Pern novels have, but she's coming close. One of the strengths of her earlier Velgarth series was that the characters appeared in one trilogy, and then in future series appeared as minor characters, sticking strictly to the sidelines. Already at the end of the Mage Winds trilogy Elspeth, Darkwind, and Firesong were reaching the end of their usefulness as "save the world" characters -- the ensemble ending that broke the mage storms felt like an utterly contrived reunion show.

Fortunately, Lackey has since moved on to fleshing out backstories for some of the more peripheral characters and stories taking place elsewhere in the world. She's created a compelling and complex fantasy world that gives her plenty of room to write in: falling in love with individual characters and not letting them go weakens that world.

If you don't know the Battle of the Atlantic from the Battle of Leyte Gulf, you'll want to do a quick review of U.S. naval history during World War II before starting Dr. Rose's second volume in his Power at Sea trilogy. That said, I think that even the casual historian will find this book well worth their while. A revealing look into the rise of the aircraft carrier as the dominate weapon of sea power is only one of the several intriguing topics covered. I was particularly fascinated by the section that described how close the axis nations actually came to winning the war they had so recklessly begun. This book provides an excellent look into the era in which the United States surpassed Great Britain as the greatest sea power in the world.

3 out of 5 stars Complexity that never fully pays off.......2002-01-10

Marc Platt's previous entry into the Doctor Who canon was 1989's GHOST LIGHT, a story so squashed into the available time allotted, that much of it seemed confusing upon the first watch. Subsequent viewings made the material easier to understand, revealing a story in which virtually none of the action is wasted. In "Ghost Light" there's hardly a single line of the story that isn't vital.

The difference between that story and CAT'S CRADLE: TIME'S CRUCIBLE couldn't be any greater. Because of the strict time limits imposed on the television episodes, GHOST LIGHT ended up being boiled down to its barest essential elements. On the other hand, freed from those constraints, TIME'S CRUCIBLE grows into a massive sprawling work that spans literally millions of years, through the history of the Time Lords, from the beginnings of Gallifreyian time travel to the journeys and origins of the Doctor. The book suffers from an incredible lack of focus, and this is a pity because there are a lot of very interesting ideas present, that if executed properly would have resulted in a much more satisfying story.

The plot is intensely complicated. Unfortunately, the complexity doesn't necessarily mean good, and the payoff at the end isn't especially rewarding. If you have the guts to make it all the way to the ending, you'll find that the conclusion and explanations are worth it, but only barely. It all makes sense (apart from one or two minor problems that I noticed) but when one reaches the ending, one wonders why we had to go through such an elaborate process to get to it. It feels complicated, not because the story had to be, but because the author just felt like making it convoluted simply for the sheer sake of it.

The story somewhat centers around several survivors from a wrecked experimental time vessel that had crashed into the TARDIS. The poor characterization, and unsure prose style meant that I had a lot of trouble keeping track of which person was which. After a few pages they all seemed to melt into the same puzzlingly enigmatic character. This was quite annoying as there was a great opportunity here to explore the characters as they appeared and reappeared in different stages of their lives.

It's frustrating when one sees good ideas go to waste, and TIME'S CRUCIBLE falls into that trap. There are some very interesting concepts here that never really get close to fulfilling their potential. The setting is excellent and the descriptions of the dead and decaying city are very effective. The passages dealing with the apparent destruction of the TARDIS convey a sense of impending doom quite well. Ace's reactions to the story unfolding around her are handled interestingly. Some of the sequences set on Ancient Gallifrey feel quite epic. All of these things make for fascinating reading, but the problem is that they simply don't work well together. As individual set pieces they are engaging, but the momentum keeps getting lost somewhere. The gaps between the exciting parts are simply plodding and dull.

This should have been a much better story than it ended up being. There are a lot of fabulous ideas and the central concept is quite an intriguing one. The problem is simply the poor execution. If there had been some major editing to remove all the dull, incoherent parts, and to tighten up the pacing, the book could have been very much improved. The ending really needed something with enough impact to make the sitting reader bolt upright and shout, "Oh, so that's what was going on! That was incredible!" Unfortunately, the result was the reader having a yawn, a stretch, and mumbling, "Oh, so that's what was going on. Well, that all makes sense, but so what?"

4 out of 5 stars The past and the present in collision.......2001-04-13

With the TARDIS under attack, the unexpected collision with an early time vessel from Gallifrey's past seemingly destroys the TARDIS and Ace awakes in a strange city under attack from a thing known as "the Process"...

Written by Marc Platt, probably best known to Doctor Who fans as the scripter of the late classic 'Ghost Light', this book is the first in the very loose Cat's Cradle trilogy and features a substantial look at the prehistory of Gallifrey, the Doctor's home planet.

Reasonably complicated in structure (the behaviour of some of the characters is determined by complicated matters that become plainer towards the end of the book), it helps fill out the background of the Doctor's people while involving the Doctor and Ace in a seriously threatening adventure.

All in all, a worthwhile read, but it requires concentration.

Now in a fully revised and expanded third edition, this landmark text provides comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of an increasingly rich and varied field. The authors synthesize classic and contemporary research on religious thought, belief, and behavior across the lifespan; the forms and meaning of religious experience; the social psychology of religious organizations; and connections to biology, morality, coping, and mental health. As in previous editions, the focus is on scientific work that is moving the psychology of religion into the mainstream of academic psychology, rather than broad interpretative and conceptual discussions. Organized for optimal use in advanced undergraduate- or graduate-level courses, every chapter features thought-provoking quotations, sidebars, and examples that bring key concepts to life.

Wow jeez dam - this is a college student coming out of a PSY Religions class (undergraduate thank you very much!!). This is definately an empirical approach. Studies, references, surveys gALORE! This is really great when studying religion, which can be so ...wishy-washy I'll say. I agree with the other commentor -the references are quite valuable when studying in this area, and a lot of other studies as well. Spilka et. al. do a wonderful job of succinctly speaking on what seems to be nearly every highly desired topic in the subject, and more. WELL DONE SPILKA AND those-of-you-who-don't-get-your-name-in-the-reference-and-have-to-settle-with-ET-AL...YA ET ALS!!!!

5 out of 5 stars no serious student of the topic should be without this book.......2006-04-07

This book is _the_ reference on the topic of the psychology of religion. The reference section itself is worth the price of the book! As a text, it would be more appropriate to a graduate level than an undergraduate level class, but then few schools offer a class on the subject at all. However, anyone interested in pursuing this topic would do well to have a copy of this book on their shelf, preferably within reach at all times.
