4 out of 5 stars For those that don't speak portuguese.......2004-07-01

The book City of God is a deposition on daily of a social sector ahead of the process of urbanization and the growth of the urban violence in Rio De Janeiro. The depositions that had been transformed into a romance (and to leave of it in film) didaticamente trace the different and possible exclusion and ways of the members of this Carioca community. The rotation of the man power in the traffic of drugs and the mortality of its members is impressive and is noticed clearly that the exploration gear leaves in the mount (slum quarter) the part poor, with the connivance of the policy and of investors until the cartels. Disputes of teritórios and the creation of walls "invisíveis" but deadly so that it crosses them in the sample as the absence of the public power and the diffidence with what still surplus of it does not leave choice ahead of "lei" of the violence. Impressive and involving this romance.

5 out of 5 stars Um Romance sobre a violência e exclusão social carioca.......2004-02-02

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Skeeve is back! - with mods..........2006-12-23

Skeeve the Great is back. The Great Magician Skeeve is back in a rip-snorting, lollygagging new adventure and he is as good as he used to be!

This book is the first in the new series of Skeeve books and Robert Asprin has taken on an collaborator (Jody Lynn Nye) to help him write the next installment in this humorous adventure saga that manages to poke fun at mayn sacred institutions. This is the first volume from a new publisher and also the first under this collaborative arrangement which the Editor's Note at the beginning of the book attributes to the stress of writing under timeline pressure. However a quick scan of the internet also yields another possible cause - Robert Jordan's tangles with the IRS.

Neve mind that, this adventure restores Skeeve to his glory as a bumbling adventurer and apprentice mage. The story takes place after the demise of M.Y.T.H. inc. and has Skeeve back in Klahd with Bunny, Gleep, and Buttercup as his sole associates as he tries to come to grips with his own (lack of) growth as a wizard. Then, along comes a sheeplike being from the dimension of Wuhs (yes, all the inhabitants are Wuhses!) who asked Skeeve for help since his dimension has been taken over by the Ten Pervects! This is a company of female Pervects who are ostensibly taking over every dimension they can. Well, that certainly gets Skeeve's attention so he recruits Tananda and off the merry gang go to save the dimensions.

One zany episode after another takes place and the authors poke fun at all kinds of topics, like self-help authors, computer culture, mass marketing, and on and on. At the end a positive resolution takes place as Skeeve sets everyone straight and gets that Wuhses to take control of their dimension.

While it is not possible to see the seamlines of the collaboration directly, I was struck by the differences in approach. In this volume we are treated to a split screen in a sense. Some of the text is written from the point of view of The Ten Pervects which necessarily imparts a whole different viewpoint on the proceedings. I do not recall something like this being done in previous volumes with the notable exception of the Guido-views of M.Y.T.H. but then they were being told from Skeeve's party point of view - not the adversary.

About the only thing I did not like came at the end of the book. Aahz makes a cameo appearance in the first person and claims to have been involved in the epic scene that causes the resolution of all the problems. What really irritated me was the final page or so where the stage is set for the next adventure. There was really no call for that as the Skeeve books will clearly continue. So, I took away one star for that big blooper. Otherwise a very enjoyable read.

      1 out of 5 stars I can't believe Asprin wrote this........2005-08-12

I've loved his previous books, but Robert Asprin completely dropped the ball... that is if he even wrote the book. The glaring mistakes in the world he created, as were pointed out by other reviewers, makes me question whether or not he took much of a hand in writing it. Even more suggestive of a limitted role is the vastly different style that this book is written in which is, quite frankly, just NOT funny anymore (not even mildly amusing!). The characters don't even have personalities consistent with the previous books.

Looking at the cover, I wouldn't be surprised if Jody Lynn Nye wrote this since I have trouble believing Asprin could turn out such a painful piece. If that's the case, he needs to drop her as she's turning what was one of the greatest fantasy/humor series into garbage.

I am somewhat surprised that others haven't noticed the disparity in quality between this book and previous ones. Many readers may genuinely like the book, but people: just having "Myth" in the title and Robert Asprin's name on it doesn't make it good. Think.

3 out of 5 stars Did it really need to take 29 chapters?.......2005-08-03

As a long time MYTH-series lover, I was so excited to have a new MYTH book to read. I was terribly enthusiastic through MYTH-ION Improbable but my reading pace slowed to a crawl through MYTH Alliances. The plot was predictable, the puns came across as merely a substitute for imagination, and I really didn't feel as if I were getting to know the characters any better. You could see where the plot was headed from chapter 1. Three weeks on my desk and 29 chapters later, it went exactly where I thought it would and took an inordinate amount of time to get there. In addition, Asprin and Nye have taken to making Skeeve's character just plain uninteresting. Before he had his faults, but he was still endearing. Now, he's matured into a standard, boring adult. Bring back the orginal creativity and spark!

1 out of 5 stars Postmodern Gobley gook.......2005-06-09

The bad guys aren't really bad; the good guys aren't really good. There is none of the humor, sensibilities, or character of his first three books in the series.

Mr. Asprin can be a fine, funny writer but has a tendency to lose both control and track of his characters. What started out as a fine funny romp in 'Another Fine Myth' has settled down into formulaic nonsense in which the characters don't have character, they have stereotypes. The characters aren't flawed, they are plot points. No exploration of the humor of the human condition, just something else to resolve to extend the text a few pages.

What could be interesting interplay between a not quite mature or worldly boy wizard and a way too worldly Businesswoman Bunny is completely... well... nothing. There is no there there. Tananda has been relegated to a set piece (where is the fiery whimsical assassin who said "Bark at the moon, Istavon"?). The rest of the guys remind me of Michael York's Basil Exposition in the Austin Powers movies. They are simply there to inject or resolve plot points that Rob didn't have the imagination to deal with properly. Also, when did Ahaz become Yoda?

The whole series died somewhere during `Little Myth Marker' and perhaps should have stayed dead.

      Let the flames wars begin!

5 out of 5 stars This book does not disappoint.......2005-04-19

I enjoy humor and I love punny tales. I only started reading this series (after myriad recommendations) earlier this year. Trust me, if you have a funny bone, be sure to have a glass of water at hand, you may very well need it.

        Book Description

Door To Atlantis describes what really happened to us in that Atlantean cataclysmic event which submerged the continent over a period of one day and a night. Many thousands of years ago, a race of extraordinary beings determined the future of mankind, influenced our technologies and changed the direction and the genetic make-up of humanity. Door to Atlantis describes the gods of Atlantis, the Ancient Elder Brothers, Interdimensional Portals of Atlantis, the Mars Atlantis Voyagers and their genetic and technological experiments. The book is an expose of how advanced technologies reshaped the destiny of mankind taking us down through the dimensions. What happened during our transit back up to the Fifth Dimension? It discloses UFO sightings and extaterrestrial encounters. You may or may not be convinced by these startling revelations, but it is the truth that many have been waiting for.

Door to Atlantis also addresses spiritual precepts about new dimensions ruled by "thought" that we will be moving into an must prepare for by the end of the "cycle".

Door to Atlantis encourages people of this planet to wake up and recognize their legacy of little known expression in mankind today and their multidimensinal spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Great Details About Multidimensionality.......2005-04-23

A MUST READ!! It is like absolute confirmation that the continent existed. It has details that I have not seen anywhere else, about the past and the future. The details of her return with the Brothers of Light to the past only a few days before and into the actual cataclysm is an emotional rolercoaster. I started reading Door To Atlantis and just could not put it down. It was an startling testimony that we as a planet, are surrounded by multidimensional worlds. I felt as though I was going through the portals and doorways, it was an incredible series of encounters with the Brothers of Light, visits to other civilizations and worlds so that they can show us that we are more than we think we are. And that we are rising up through many dimensional levels. I throughly enjoyed it. The author as teacher and experiencer has had an incredible series of stories in her life.

        5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary .......2005-04-23

A MUST READ! I couldn't believe the emotional experiences of feeling like I was there during the actual cataclysm. The triumph of finding out that she had an ancient connection from another world and her destiny here is to help us to "wake up from masses as we move through different levels of life. He story was like repeated calls/visits to wake up from the matrix. I started reading Door To Atlantis and just could not put it down. I recommend it. The Spiritual teachings are also profound.

Spring vacation has come, and the students from Cheiron's Academy are on break. Hercules, son of the god Zeus, along with Lilith and Iolaus, decide to visit the Amazons at the urging of Hercules, who has a crush on the Amazon queen, Cyane. But when they arrive at the Amazon settlement, they find it deserted: One of the gods has vanquished the tribe.

The Amazons have been captured by the Yoruba, members of a West African kingdom. That nation's god of war, Ogun, plans to inflame his people against the Amazons. And Ares, the Greek god of war, protector, and defender of the Amazons, is powerless to help his subjects because Zeus, his father, has forbid any Greek god from interfering in the affairs of foreign gods.

In order to save the Amazons, Ares must join forces with Hercules, which is no easy matter since Ares hates his brother for being their father's favorite son.

The story is very enjoyable. The only setback is that it's only 128 pages.

From the supplier: Most works published by leisure researchers highlight conflicting ideas, adding to the growing gap between leisure service practitioners and academicians. While some researchers, including Jordan and Roland stress the existence of a non-influential body of research literature, others, including the likes of Samdahl and Kelly, have focused on the intellectual-orientation of leisure research. Such a gap may be partly explained by the literature base differences experienced by practitioners and academicians.

                    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-10-28

This is one of the best series I have ever read. It has a twist of suspense/mystery as well as romance. Rae's ability to hear thoughts through a single fingerprint helps her find out the true secret of her mother. It will also help find who is out to kill her. I couldn't put these books down, I read book 1 - 7 in less than 2 weeks, and i guarntee you will too!

5 out of 5 stars So far, the best in the series.......2004-06-28

I love all the Fingerprints books, but the last few have been a bit disappointing. But REVELATIONS is a breath of fresh air for the series, it never had me bored.

Rae Voight is mad at her two best - and pretty much only - friends Anthony and Yana. They went out behind her back, and it tore her apart...they "betrayed" her. But on the birght side, she's back with her old boyfriend Marcus, and doesn't want anything to do with Anthony or Yana. Anyway, one day Anthony spots something that he feels Rae needs to know about - a message was written on her locker in red paint, and he thinks it's a warning. When he goes to tell her, she brushes him off, definately letting him know that she isn't interested in what he has to say.

After a while, Rae forgives Yana (she's still mad at Anthony, though) and they start to hang out. That's when Yana tells Rae something really important: Yana's dad is trying to get her put into the same institution that Rae was in after her "episode." Even though Rae isn't very happy with Yana, she decides to help her. But when Rae and Yana run off to escape the doctors, they find themselves in a very dangerous situation.

REVELATIONS is definately my favorite book from the Fingerprints series. The best part? We finally find out who wants Rae dead. A must read.

                    Overall rating - A+

4 out of 5 stars Rae Was Ready to Get On With Her Life..........2003-07-31

Steve Mercer, the scientist who enhanced the psi abilities of people like her mother, and herself, was finally dead. Rae was definitely ready to put all of this behind her and to move forward. The first step towards being normal again was to get back together with Marcus. He doesn't make Rae feel anywhere near the same as Anthony, but Yana and Anthony totally betrayed her trust and so she is ready to go with someone safe, someone normal. She feels like she has succeeded when she and Marcus are voted Moonbeam King & Queen, but Anthony destroys the evening by telling her that someone still wants her dead.

Anthony wishes that he could relax now that Mercer is dead, but he knows that the danger to Rae is not over. For one thing, someone painted Unclean all over her locker in red and then passed out flyers about Rae's mother all over school. Anthony is trying to protect Rae, but she can hardly stand to be around him.

When Yana shows up, begging Rae for help, Rae really wants to turn her down flat. But when she finds out that Yana's dad wants to send her to Fair Haven, a mental institution, so that she will be out of his way, Rae knows that she has to do something. She could hardly stand to be in that place and can't bear to see someone else locked up there. What Rae doesn't know is that she is in the middle of another deadly game - and this time, Rae's life is the prize...

Book #6 in the Fingerprints series was another great book. The tension is really building and everything is starting to come together and make sense. A lot of my questions were answered here and it is now time for Rae to start making some plans instead of just reacting. Too bad that she seems too stupid to connect the dots! That was my only complaint about this book, that Rae didn't seem able to put the clues together so she was totally clueless near the end of the book. I know that she is smarter than that! Anyway, hopefully you have read the first 5 books in the series so you know what is going on, and, if not, I would highly recommend reading them first. For the first time, there is actually some closure at the end of this book, but we know that Rae's story is far from over. Keep #7 ready to find out what happens to Rae & Anthony next!

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Gentle Guidance.......2006-05-24

"Life is a creative experience," begins author Kent Nerburn in his slim little volume of basic truths on which to build a life of value for oneself and others. They are, as the title states, basic and simple truths, but it is these simple truths that have been lost in the muddle and busyness and confusion of modern life marked by an embarrassment at claiming a value system. Nerburn continues in explanation of why we must reconnect to these simple truths: "We are shaping ourselves at every moment by every decision we make."

And so we are. A moment taken to consider carefully the meanings and values of topics Nerburn has chosen here are moments well spent. To ponder these truths and to absorb them clears the path ahead and moves us forward with peace and conviction.

Short chapters illustrate in clean prose the values of education and learning ("without knowledge I could not play the violin. Without wisdom, I could not play the music"); work ("we are what we do, and the more we do it, the more we become it"); money ("be a giver and a sharer... in some unexpected and unforeseeable fashion, all else will take care of itself"); possessions ("possessions are as likely to make you unhappy as they are to make you happy, because they define the limits of your life and keep you from the freedom of choice that comes with traveling light"); giving ("you have the power to create joy and happiness by your simplest gestures of caring and compassion"); travel ("if we don't offer ourselves to the unknown, our senses dull. Our world becomes small and we lose our sense of wonder"); loneliness and solitude (the first is a void, the second a sense of self-fulfillment); love ("treat what love brings you with kindness"); marriage ("if you believe in your heart that you have found someone with whom you are able to grow, if you have sufficient faith that you can resist the endless attraction of the road not taken and the partner not chosen, if you have the strength to embrace the cycles and seasons that your love will experience..."); parenthood ("in the bondage to a child you will find a freedom you never imagined, but neither should you seek parenthood as a way to fill an emptiness in your life. A child will hold a mirror to your life..."); strength ("true strength does not require an adversary and does not see itself as noble or heroic. It simply does what it must without praise or need of recognition... strength based in love is strength people crave"); tragedy and suffering ("they are the fire that burns you pure"); the spiritual journey ("spiritual understanding never becomes deep unless you subject yourself to the spiritual discipline of practicing your belief"); elders ("they were you and you will be them"); death ("it brings us to a judgment, so it is ours to control by the kind of life we live"); and concludes with an epilogue on embracing the mystery.

"If we have played our part well - offering love where it was needed, strength and caring where it was lacking; if we have tended the earth and its creatures with a sense of humble stewardship - we will have done enough."

Simple, yes, and shining with a timeless truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reviews to One Who Honors the memory of Father.......2006-02-08

Not often among writers do you discover anything of these valued SIMPLE TRUTHS, "In honored memory of one's Father!" My first reading came from my good-reader Friend's excerpt of Kent's neat Chapter entitled, "The Spiritual Journey."

Kent's thoroughly organized headings, uniquely begin in Learning and Education, On Work, On Money, On Possessions, On Giving, On Travel, On Loneliness & Solitude, On Love/Marriage, Parenthood, with short but potent chapters, On Strength, On Tragedy and next Suffering! I am enamored with his depth of understanding of that spiritual "tradition that seems to give voice to the music of your Spirit...(to often being) afraid to follow!"

After this shortest of his diamond-emerald Jewels, all coming from four unique perspectives, I am more than ever an admiror! After three reviews I am finally into the midst of NEITHER WOLF Nor DOG. It promises to be his education and first-hand report of dealing with his own people, in the person of his Elder, Dan asking for help in writing a book of Native American Wisdom! Retired Chaplain, Fred W Hood "Barbara377" (Fayetteville,GA United States)

5 out of 5 stars It you could only own a few books, this should be one of them!.......2005-10-08

I am nearly 50 years old and I can't remember any book I have read any more profound than this one! The writing clarity and depth of wisdom spoke directly to my soul. If I had to leave my home and could only take a few books with me, this book would definitely be one of them. Often times, I read a book and pass it on, but this one was so internally and externally thought provoking, it is one book I will keep with me always and read again and again. For each time it is read, a new truth unfolds that was, perhaps, unrecognized on a previous reading. If your heart is sincerely seeking truth in an incredibly mixed up world, this is the book you must read.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Truths by Kent Nerburn.......2005-09-23

This book changed my life. I connected with every word and thought on a deep level, realizing that these were truths in which I have always strongly believed but never seen articulated in such profoundly simple and elegant prose. Seeing these concepts and "truths" presented so beautifully and artfully-- and yet so logically--caused me to re-commit to them and examine my life around them. I realized that in many ways I hadn't been living one of my own credos, Be True to Yourself, and I was inspired to make some very positive and freeing changes in my life. Over the past year since reading the book, have read other books to expand on the thoughts to the point that I now know myself better and have more inner peace than ever before (The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle was a major contributor). I keep a stock of "Simple Truths" to give as gifts. Nerburn's book "Small Graces" made me want to crawl into the pages and live there. Instead I applied the principals to my life and am now enjoying living there even more. I've ordered "Neither Wolf nor Dog" and "Wisdom of the Native American's," both by Nerburn, and am eagerly awaiting their arrival.
