Book Description

In 1878 Adam Burke leaves Philadelphia for North Platte, Nebraska. The young lawyer wants to start a new life after being spurned by his fiancee. Adam also has another reason to leave -- he accidentally ran over and killed a woman named Nancy Mason in a thunderstorm. In North Platte he finds success in more ways than one when Rachel Mason answers his ad for a mail order bride. Adam considers the last name an odd coincidence -- but only after their marriage and after they both come to the Lord do they discover the awful truth: Adam killed Rachel's mother. Thanks to a pastor's intervention, Rachel overcomes her shock and bitterness to forgive Adam, just as God forgives us all.

1 out of 5 stars Boring!!!! Terrible! Don't bother!.......2003-06-02

This is my second mail order bride series book. Once again I am disappointed. Where is the mail order bride part? It comes in at the last couple of chapters. This book was sad and depressing.
I found my self just skimming the pages after chapter 15. I was saying to my self when is the good part going to happen? The word mail order bride is first brought up in chapter 15 and there is only 24 chapters in the entire book. The last few chapters had some romance but not allot. The last few chapters were very sappy and so fake. I could here the violins in the back ground (argue).
Also reading this book the characters got confusing. After he breaks up with girl number 1 and runs over girl number 2 mother I was little lost. I thought he had hit girl number 1 mom.
There was not a good flow from one Character to the other.
If you want to read a real mail order bride (Romance Christian) type book read Hope (Brides of the West 1872, Book 3) by Lori Copeland. Now that was a real Christian romance book that you can't put down!

Book Description

The second novel from the best-selling Argentine author of The Anatomist, The Merciful Women is a brilliant retelling of the birth of the Gothic novel. In the summer of 1816, Percy and Mary Shelley, Mary's sister, and Lord Byron hid themselves away in a Swiss villa, whiling away rainy afternoons with the Gothic novel contest that would produce Frankenstein. Andahazi's reimagining focuses on the fifth competitor: John Polidori, Byron's manservant, a talentless hack resentful of the ease of his master's life. Through a Faustian pact with an unseen intercessant, Polidori obtains the most compelling vampire story ever written. But "The Vampyre" has striking similarities to Polidori's benefactor and to what she asks of him in return. Opium, erotica, and decadence meld into a sly and stylish novel about literary ambition, talent, and inspiration. "A hoot ... a Voltaire-like skewering of the myth of genius. Andahazi can remind you of vintage Terry Southern." -- Richard Wallace, The Seattle Times "Playful, satiric, erotic, sometimes savage, sometimes slapstick ... something completely different, and well worth reading. -- San Francisco Chronicle "As a piece of mock-scholarly, wickedly ironic entertainment, it is an utter delight." -- Publishers Weekly "This literary tour de force cum vampire tale will leave the reader gasping-from laughter and horror by turns." -- The Baltimore Sun

4 out of 5 stars love it or hate it.......2004-01-26

andahazi's delightfully quirky novel about the birth of the gothic novel, the authors involved and thier dark muse has not surprisingly cut readers down teh middle. a quick look at teh earlier ratings suggests that readers have either loved or hated it.

i, thankfully, belong to the former group and must admit that i thoroughly enjoyed this devious tale written with sublime black humour. this book is clearly not for the faint or heart or the squeamish but if you are willing to be led down some sleazy alleys andahazi delivers his goods. the translation by alberto manguel is top class and it is hard to imagine this was not written in english.

the book does no offer much breadth of scope but what it promises it delivers.

5 out of 5 stars A dark, ironic parody of the Gothic genre...........2003-04-23

On a dark stormy night, a group of people holidaying by Lake Geneva gather to read out their stories. It is a competition devised by the dashing Lord Byron, to see who can write the most horrific and terrifying story... one of these people is Mary Shelley....

This book is a fantastic parody of the Gothic genre; the dark stormy nights, the mysterious castle and the heaving,storm-tossed lake... all in all, a tremendous read for anyone who enjoys Gothic tales or their parodies. Although sometimes graphic, the story is gripping and the elements of historical truth are enough to keep you interested right up to the thrilling and unexpected end. The book is filled with dark irony, and the intertextual references to the Gothic genre and the creation of that monstrous, classic tale Frankenstien, are witty and clever, but the book can be enjoyed on many levels. I would highly recommend this book, and have bought multiple copies for all of my friends.

1 out of 5 stars Argentinian Ego.......2002-08-15

This novel is an extreme example of the Argentinian ego: I guess only men from Argentina could possibly dream that the semen they throw away after jerking off will feed --by a dark and horrendous coincidence--, the life of two beautiful women. To make it short, even the semen they throw away is able to give life to another person, how glorious they are!!
The review of Donna Seaman above is absolutely ridiculous. John Polidori did exist and he is the author of "The Vampyre," the novel that paved the way for all the future vampyre novels, with Bram Stoker's "Dracula" at its peak. From where does she believe that Polidori is an original Andahazi character can only be explained by laziness: the first five results after querying google for John William Polidori tell the whole story.
I only write this review to prevent other readers to spend their time and money in a silly and disgusting book.

1 out of 5 stars This Book [is bad]!!.......2002-04-06

This is one of the worst books I've ever read. I don't know what should be good about this [book]. Weak storyline, no suspense, and not a very good use of language. Don't buy this!

1 out of 5 stars This book did not deliver........2000-12-04

Byron and the Shellys are minor supporting characters in this thin, tedious tale. The author shows his hand early on, and from there the story declines predictably towards its conclusion. Yes, its vaguely witty at times, but the Vampyre-like parallel of swapping blood for another bodily fluid is hardly scandalous, or even provocative. I felt that I'd been sold a bill of goods. The book did not deliver what the review described.

Requiem for the Sun is the standalone sequel to the USA Today-bestselling Rhapsody trilogy (Rhapsody , Prophecy , and Destiny ). This novel will please fans of Elizabeth Haydon's high-fantasy series, but it may confuse newcomers because numerous characters from the trilogy return, and most are introduced in the book's early pages.

In the peace following the events of the trilogy, the singer Rhapsody believes she and her husband, the part-dragon Lord Cymrian, can at last start a family. Meanwhile, the assassin-king Achmed seeks to rebuild Canrif, his mountain capital. Then Lord Cymrian rejects Rhapsody's heart's desire; the giant Sergeant-Major Grunthor hears the earth itself screaming; the Dowager Empress of Sorbold, a realm of deep magic, dies under suspicious circumstances; and a powerful unknown enemy, as ancient and youthful as Rhapsody, seeks stealthily to steal her for himself. --Cynthia Ward

      Book Description

A Tale of Treachery, Love, and War Book Four of the Symphony of AgesThree years have passed since Rhapsody, the Lady Cymrian, helped bring peace and prosperity to the land of Roland. However, when the death of the Dowager Empress of Sorbold leaves empty the line of succession, dark clouds of war threaten the fragile Cymrian Alliance. And an old and deadly foe of Rhapsody's-presumed dead for centuries-rises up to threaten her and all she holds dear.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Read!!.......2007-01-15

Loved this book!! Recommend reading if you enjoy fantasy books. Elizabeth Haydon is my favorite fantasy author ever!!! She has written several books and they are all great!

      5 out of 5 stars excellent series.......2006-10-30

My sister and I shared this series together, taking turns buying the newest edition, and staying up late discussing the twists and turns in the brilliant tale. We truely enjoyed its adventure, love, and humor.

4 out of 5 stars Hoping her writing finesse shines again in next book.......2005-10-21

When I read the first three books of Elizabeth Haydon's series, I was overjoyed; here was an author whose written work was absolutely impeccable, whose voice totally resonated with me, and whose development/progression of characters, scene-setting, and story lines were all exceptionally considerate of her reader. I couldn't WAIT for Requiem to come on the book store's shelves.

I was stunned when I read it. It seemed as though the book was put through the paces in rather a hurry, with only cursory attention given to editing (typos are NOT Elizabeth Haydon's style), and some of the writing seemed....well, forced. Although it was still a better book than many I've read, I expected better from this author.

I am hoping she wins me back with the next book in the series.

3 out of 5 stars While I simply love the series...........2005-09-24

I almost feel that E. Haydon lost a bit of steam on this one. I mean, it's worth reading just to get through the rest of the series, but it's like she's kind of lost grip on the personalities of Grunthor and Achmed. And Ashe, even. They all kind of wind up like Rhapsody in their mannerisms.

And there's a lot of... whiney, poor me angst. Though as always lots of action. Just... not quite as well portrayed as it was in the first three books.

Now, when you get to the bad guys and the new characters, they're a bit better! Wait 'til you meet Faron. Poor Faron!

Her first three books were absolutely wonderful reads. This was flatter. Though definetly finish the series! Next book onwards was a tad better and I can't wait for the end :)

3 out of 5 stars Sad. There was so much potential........2004-12-26

I really enjoyed the original Trilogy, and was excited to discover Ms Haydon had expanded upon it.

But, I ended up sighing through much of the book. I had grown to love the main characters in the first books -- I felt like I really knew them. In this book, I felt I was reading about strangers -- obnoxious ones, at that.

The first 100 pages felt like tiny glimpses into their lives. We're given no chance to reaquaint ourselves with them. We're not given a chance to understand them, to feel what they're feeling.

And, it introduced too many new characters and side stories too quickly. I found myself dizzy and confused. Do I know this character? Is it a new character? Do I care?

Overall, I felt it was a good story -- told badly.

I found a few of the plot devices to be too contrived. I was especially disturbed at the unlikely way Theopolis managed to get herself hired. She seemed to rely an an awful lot of big IFs. Way too much uncertainty for something so important to her. She could never have expected Achmed to do the things he did that allowed him to discover her. And, why would she risk it all as a petty grave robber? She would never have done that. Good grief.

And, Michael had too much power available to him through Faron. Not only is that potential out of balance (the ability to know whatever you want when ever you want is just too much -- too unbelievable), his use of it seemed rather amatuerish and ineffective.

Finally, while I normally don't care about a few typos, the sheer volume of them in this book was distracting.

I'll read the following ones because I do want to complete the story. I just wish the author told it as well as she did the original trilogy.

When the supergiant star Antares exploded in 2512, the human colony on Alta found their pathway to the stars gone, isolating them from the rest of human space for more than a century. Then one day, a powerful warship materialized in the system without warning. Alarmed by the sudden appearance of such behemoth, the commanders of the Altan Space Navy dispatched one of their most powerful ships to investigate. What ASNS Discovery finds when they finally catch the intruder is a battered hulk manned by a dead crew. That is disturbing news for the Altans. For the dead battleship could easily have defeated the whole of the Altan navy. If it could find Alta, then so could whoever it was that beat it. Something would have to be done.

I heard about this series on the Podcast "Security Now" with Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte. The book was a fun read - I appreciate how scientifically based it was; each aspect of space flight seemed well thought out and quite plausible. The story is also interesting and characters are fairly well developed.

5 out of 5 stars Far future, Sci-fi, humans VS Aliens!.......2004-06-26

I really enjoyed this book. This is straight science-fiction about the far future when humanity has colonized several star systems. There is some contact with an aggressive alien race. I enjoyed the fact that the book was more or less from the protagonists viewpoint and we did not get real insight into the Aliens. This made the aliens more... well... ALIEN!! The politics, the technology, the subplots were all believable, interesting, and enthralling. I couldn't put this book down!

I have found it hard to find good science fiction books. Ones that are more "hard science" than straight story telling, but still have an enjoyable story to tell. This is the second of McCollum's books I have read and they are both excellent. I found the concepts very interesting, and the story engrossing. In general, the book was very enjoyable to read. When I finished it, I couldn't stop myself from starting Antares Passage, despite the fact that it was 1:00am and I had to get up in the morning...

                    Book Description

In this pathbreaking study, Patricia Bonomi argues that religion was as instrumental as either politics or the economy in shaping early American life and values. Looking at the middle and southern colonies as well as at Puritan New England, Bonomi finds an abundance of religious vitality through the colonial years among clergy and churchgoers of diverse religious background. The book also explores the tightening relationship between religion and politics and illuminates the vital role religion played in the American Revolution. A perennial backlist title first published in 1986, this updated edition includes a new preface on research in the field on African Americans, Indians, women, the Great Awakening, and Atlantic history and how these impact her interpretations.

                    Book Description

In this pathbreaking study, colonial historian Patricia Bonomi argues that religion was as instrumental as either politics or the economy in shaping early American life and values. Looking at the middle and southern colonies as well as at Puritan New England, Bonomi finds an abundance of religious vitality throughout the colonial years among clergy and churchgoers of diverse religious backgrounds. The book focuses on 18th-century religious activity, when churches stabilized and extended their influence to all parts of the colonies, and examines the everyday life of the clergy, the tension between religious competition and religious toleration, and the attitudes and practices of churchgoers from every rank and region. The book also explores the tightening relationship between religion and politics--especially evident in the schisms of the Great Awakening, the growth of denominational factions, and the emergence of an "ideology of dissent"--and illuminates the vital role religion played in the American Revolution. Written with grace and style, Under the Cope of Heaven presents a stimulating new perspective on the formative era of American religious culture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Work on Religion in Colonial America.......2006-07-30

Bonomi, a former student of the late Richard Hostadter, provides a detailed account of religious life, toleration and coflict in America. Her work begins by providing an overview of religious life in the colonies, followed by a study of religious toleration, which sher argues was granted begrudgingly as an expedient to promote immigration, and she concludes with an excellent section on the Great Awaening and the way in which it contributed to the America Revolution. A must read for people who require an overlook of this subject in this period.

5 out of 5 stars Under the Cope of Heaven is Illuminating.......2005-05-26

A provocative and insightful collection of material not readily found in other sources. A must for understanding the revolutionary era as well as for connecting the dots to 2005.

3 out of 5 stars good if you stay with it.......2003-02-18

This was a pretty good book looking at the role of religion in the colonial time period (a topic that has been understudied in our liberal/pc time). Most interesting was the connections made between religion (the great awakening) and the Revolution as an underlying motivator that pushed colonists to question authority after they had questioned their own lives/religions. It was a little slow in spots, but worthwhile if you keep reading.
