Book Description

The scion of one of America's wealthiest and most respected families, Jason Tull inhabits a world that is as close to paradise as anyone could desire. He's young, rich, and free to roam the earth in pursuit of his one great passion: to find a "Golden Case" of reincarnation--a case solid enough to impress even skeptics. When he hears about a young woman named Mallory Hastings who has wakened from a brief coma with an entirely new personality (and no recollection of her former one), he feels sure he's found it. The first secret he must have from her is, of course, her true identity. If she's not Mallory Hastings, then who is she? But pulling this secret from her proves to be like pulling the pin from a hand grenade. The explosion that follows opens a crack in the smooth surface of his world that no one will ever be able to paper over.

2 out of 5 stars A sloppy and lazy story.......2007-05-30

I give this book two stars rather than one based solely on the potential of the ideas at its core. Which is exactly why the book is so disappointing-- what a rich opportunity for a story, and what a lazy, uninspiring, pointless execution. Some of the worst dialogue I've ever read. You get the feeling that the author has become a little too enthralled with himself, and assumes that his readers will be on board no matter what he chooses to feed them. To say that the book is on par with 1984 and Brave New World is nonsense.

5 out of 5 stars I CARE.......2007-05-07

Another brillant book by Daniel Quinn. This book has an interesting and captivating story and I love the way he illustrates a very important and powerful message in this book that is so relevant. No books have ever had a greater impact on me in shaping the way I view our world, humanity and our culture than the writings of Daniel Quinn. This is a book worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars a great book in its self..........2006-09-08

daniel quinn is an amazing writer and the books that i have read by him are as easy flowing as the nile. this book is not comparable to "1984" by orwell or "brave new world" by huxley it merely stands alone. no one really refelects that our situation in world war two was very close to being lost and this book is kind of the interlude to what may have happened had the germans won. systematic genocide by relocating individuals back into their original countries of origin where no one can protest any atrocities that are being made toward any individuals. keeping history written so that it reflects the champions "true" history of origin and the great struggles they had to endure as to keep a sense of nationalism strong so no one questions the past. i feel that daniel quinn could have written so much more on this book . the concept of the story is fascinating in that it deals with the idea of reincarnation and this phenomenon in order to make soneone realize something they did not realize before. the middle of the book was one part that i thought could have been spiced up a little more, however, quinn pulls it off and allows the readers to continue unimpeded with the story. i found this book very interesting in that i see alot of what is going on in the real world today as quinn has outlined in his book and if we forget to speak for others then we should just not care and forget about doing anything for something we believe in ever again. we have to keep awareness up on everything and never forget where we came from, because if we dont kno than anyone can tell how we got to where we are today and where we will be tomorrow..

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2004-10-21

I absolutely loved this book, at first I couldn't get into it but then it sucked me in. The mystery unfolds at a great pace, truly amazing. The story is wonderful. The ending disappointed me slightly but so do most endings, however as a whole you will love this book.

4 out of 5 stars "History is an agreed-upon fiction." -- Napoleon Bonaparte.......2004-08-10

What if everything you'd been taught about history was wrong? What if nothing had actually happened as the textbooks say? Worse yet, what if everyone, even those teaching this false history, really believed it to be true? Is something true just because everyone believes it to be so? And even if someone did discover the truth, would anyone care? These are the questions author Daniel Quinn tackles in his dystopian novel "After Dachau." In some ways it resembles the world George Orwell created in "1984," where history is constantly re-written to fit the current agenda. The difference is that, while the characters of Orwell's "1984" engage in "doublethink" - a means by which they can simultaneously know something as a fact and also believe it to be false, the characters in Quinn's story have no more reason to question their acknowledged history than you or I would have reason to doubt that Queen Victoria existed or that the New World colonists won the American Revolution.

Quinn has chosen as a vehicle for his ideas here the phenomenon of reincarnation, or the transmigration of souls. Note that this book is not ABOUT reincarnation, nor does Quinn himself endorse the idea, despite the fact that it is a central element of the plot. Reincarnation is used here merely as a means of setting up a situation essential to making the reader think about Quinn's central theme - the manipulation of history - but which could not otherwise have occurred. In short, "After Dachau" introduces us to Mallory Hastings who, waking up after a car accident, has no memory of her present life, but only of her previous reincarnation as Gloria MacArthur, a girl who lived in the 1920s-1950s. Since then, the history of Gloria's own time has been drastically re-written, and only she knows the truth.

The revision of history, either deliberate or inadvertant, is something very common. What makes it potentially dangerous is that we often don't realize that what we are taught as fact and what actually happened are not consistent. Now, I'm not speaking primarily of grand conspiracies or even of propaganda campaigns known to be false by those who institute them. Though of course such things have been attempted, these blatant attempts at manipulation are not what we really have to worry about. They are, in general, fairly easy to see through and know for what they really are. The type of historical revision that is potentially more insidious is that which occurs when the writers of history actually believe themselves what they are saying. This can (and does) of course happen quite frequently without much harm done (compare history texts of today with those of a century ago, or two or three centuries ago - there will be differences due to changes in available information at the various times the texts were written). But Quinn's book gives us a big "what if?": If everyone on earth believes something occurred in a certain way, and believes it to be a good thing, does that automatically make it right?

There is a lot to think about in this book. Unfortunately, Quinn has not been nearly so successful in his aims here as he was with "Ishmael" or "The Story of B." In both of those works his message is quite clear and requires little independant thought to understand (though independent contemplation does greatly enhance the experience of reading both novels). In "After Dachau," however, his message remains a bit muddied and the book fails to wallop the reader between the eyes and give them the "aha!" moment that would be most gratifying. The book is filled with important ideas worthy of attention, but the presentation feels much more like a rough draft than a refined finished product. I would still recommend this one to others, but with reservations.

"After Dachau" is very simply written and can be finished in one or two sittings with no trouble at all, but this is a double-edged sword. It makes it easy to simply dismiss and forget about it when one has finished. Simply reading the book at face value and calling it a day will not leave a reader with much satisfaction. The plot itself is secondary to the ideas, and not very compelling in itself. And because the ideas are presented in a more unpolished fashion than in Quinn's other books, they will not grab you unless you grab them. Most of what I got out of this book occurred AFTER I had finished reading it, as a result of my own inner contemplation. I think it could have been a great book, rivalling Quinn's others, if he had spent a little more time developing it before going to publication. As it is, "After Dachau" is a good book, but falls short of its potential.

Book Description

SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, PEARL, and SIR ORFEO are masterpieces of a remote and exotic age--the age of chivalry and wizards, knights and holy quests. Yet it is only in the unique artistry and imagination of J.R.R. Tolken that the language, romance, and power of these great stories comes to life for modern readers, in this masterful and compelling new translation.

2 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Slightly more interesting piece of output, due to the theme being the
old Green Knight story. That tale is usually quite entertaining, and is
in this version, as well. The other piece is eminently forgettable,
however. I suppose you would say that it is for Tolkien completists
only.

5 out of 5 stars Enter into late-Medieval Adventure and Piety.......2006-08-11

These three texts from the translating pen of J.R.R. Tolkien coprise an uplifiting trio that give the reader a glimpse of times when literature was aimed at both beauty and the edification of proper values. This is particularly true in the first two texts.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight presents a late Arthurian legend which was penned in a relatively obscure West-Midland dialect of early Middle English. The text, as translated by Tolkien, still maintains the auditory alliteration used to drive the poem itself. This in itself is a blessed treasure to the reader, as it is a rarely used method of poetry. The story is a gem in that it presents a fallible human, Gawain, who strives by the Grace of God to fulfill his oaths made. It is an exposition of piety, casting the Arthurian knight into a wholly Christian light.

Pearl, written in a dialectic style of poetic meter, is a moving poem of grief and understanding in the face of the death of a two-year-old child. The imagery used in it is absolutely breathtaking, drawing heavily on the Apocalypse of John for its material. The discourse is a journey of enlightenment and eventual peace, marked with profound trust in God. I found this poem to be absolutely stunning in itself. Pearl, along with Gawain, exposes the existence of a great deal of Marian piety at the time of the writing. This presents an intriguing scenario which reminds Christians of the ongoing understanding of Mary's role in the Christian faith.

Sir Orfeo, related in many ways to Classical myth, is a much more light-hearted adventure. It is a quick read that presents the reader with the brave quest of King Orfeo for his lost wife,Heurodis. The sybols used are mixed from Classical as well as English/Celtic sources. While the story is not wholly inventive, it is a fun read and has been presented very well by professor Tolkien.

I suggest this set of texts to everybody, for they present the reader with poetry which is not only grounded in romance/adventure but also in morality (particulary I and II) and faith.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Magic.......2005-10-23

"Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight" is a great and holy work of literature and I return to it on an annual basis to breathe the air of its strong magic and to observe with awe its rutheless moral rigor. What a profound joy it is to foresake the barren land of contemporary hack literature and enter once more into a world where the colors are brighter, the language is grander, and the characters stride across the mysterious landscape like gods or faery-figures lit from within by a mystic sun. The great J.R.R. Tolkien did us all a supreme kindness when he advocated for the deep spiritual and aesthetic significance of "Beowulf" (for whom his own writings bear covert relations) and he doubled it when he translated this masterpiece of the enchanted but decidedly anonymous soul who wrote it.

Five stars are a poor return for such pleasure and wisdom offered.

5 out of 5 stars Arthurian Legend at its best.......2005-10-13

I've always been fascinated with the old Arthurian legends, so this tale appealed to me greatly. Sir Gawain was everything a knight should be considering the fact that he's not perfect due to the fact that he's human. The animals depicted in the hunting scenes directly tie in with the storyline with Sir Gawain and the lady of the castle. The deer represented that Sir Gawain tried to flee away from having to deal with the lady of the castle. The wild boar represented difficulty since it was stated that the boar in the hunt had killed a man. Finally, the fox represented the fact that Sir Gawain was planning to be sly and conceal the fact that the lady of the castle had given him her girdle. The fact that he would lie to the lord of the castle, shows that he is truly human and that he would like to keep his own head when he has to go meet back up with the Green Knight the following day. The hunt over three days represents a series of three tests which later comes to aid or hinder Sir Gawain in his quest to keep his oath as a knight and follow through with the guidelines of "the beheading game". The girdle at the end that all the knights in King Arthur's court take to wearing symbolizes that they are human and that they are not perfect and that humility should be observed.

4 out of 5 stars Pearl of Wisdom.......2004-03-29

Gawain is the Tolekin translation of one of many versions of the story. The story is exciting but ultimately disappointing because of the incongruence of the ending with the opening. The opening indicates that King Arthur is all too aware of the false beheading trick being played in his court as he primes the action for the hapless Gawain. The ending indicates the Green Man alone instigated the trick with Morgan le Fay. The point missed by Tolkein (jnr) in the Introduction is that the brocade is the sole tangible due to the green man in the exchange of acquisitions, so a real dishonour. Anyway Camelot' s self advertised mythology is well and truly pricked.
Pearl, on the other hand is a true medaeval pagan gem, arguing that religion is the exploitation of bereavement. Religion claims the deceased for heaven; it offers reunion to the survivor conditional on temporal faith. If the departed is beloved of a survivor then that cat runs headlong into the priest' s bag with little prompting. The poet becomes so seduced by the vision of the New Jerusalem he comes to see his former reason as madness and so went the world.
The strength of Christian theology surely developed from these kinds of rational resistence. Ultimetely reason conquered and theology relapsed to a dogmatic statement of faith in the shape of pearl (Aquinas). A great and thoroughly authentic work of transitional pagan genius saved by Tolkein.

                  Book Description

Fourteen-year-old Jack Morgan has gone through a lot since he met Draycos, a dragon-like K'da warrior he saved when everyone else in Draycos' scout fleet was killed in an ambush. Ever since, Jack and Draycos, who slips onto Jack's back like a living tattoo, have been trying to track down the people responsible for the massacre. On the planet Brum-a-dum Jack gets hired to work on a plantation owned by a Brummga whose family has ties to mercenary groups. One of those groups might have been involved in the ambush.Jack's a terrific thief, and managed to do a passable imitation of a mercenary, but those talents don't help him much on the plantation. Here, he's just one of many slaves, with little hope of finding the information he came for. But that's not his biggest problem now. The slavemaster knows Jack's no ordinary slave, and has his eye on him. Jack, who's been in tight spots before, knows that can only mean trouble. On the heavily fortified grounds of the alien plantation, there's no way to get out, and nobody to help him. Nobody, that is, except Draycos. Jack can only hope that's enough.

In the effort to help Draycos find the mercenaries that attacked his advance team, Jack gets himself sold into slavery. In the process, he finds the information he's seeking, and frees some slaves in the bargain. The climax of this story has to be read to believed. Zahn is at his best in getting his characters in a tight spot and then getting them out again.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Worded Book.......2007-01-30

Have you ever wanted a tattoo of a dragon? What if it was alive? Well, fourteen year old thief Jack Morgan has to deal with one and it is extremely hard for him. Jack is a fourteen-year-old thief who's been through a military struggle for a mine and a political war between Cornelius Braxton and Aurther Neverlin for Braxton Corporation. He has Draycos, a K'da poet-warrior, as an ally and a friend. His main frame computer is programmed like his dead uncle, Virgil Morgan. Jack is now a slave on Brum-a-Dum and needs to find out about the organization that is trying to stop K'da and Shotine trips.
This is the third book in the dragonback series. Timothy Zhan is an awe inspiring writer. He makes it go at break neck pace and it nearly turns its pages itself. He makes you seem like you are with Jack and Draycos. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes weird aliens and battles on the sky and ground. Also I'd recommend it to any one who likes Star Wars.

5 out of 5 stars An Inside View of Slavery.......2006-07-13

Dragon and Slave (2005) is the third novel in the Dragonback Adventure series, following Dragon and Soldier. In the previous volume, Jack managed to con both sets of mercenaries who were fighting over the deep mine of the natives. He also obtained an information dump from a Shamsir computer system. Although it did not contain any useful data on Djinn-90 fighters, Uncle Virge did note that various Brummgas who were working for the mercenaries had come from the same place.

In this novel, Jack takes the Essenay to Brum-a-dum. All the Brummga mercenaries have come from the Chookoock slave compound on this planet. He sets up a scam that allows Uncle Virge to sell him to the Chookoock family estate so that he can rummage through their computers.

Everything goes according to plan until Gazen, the human slavemaster, sends Jack to the hotbox to correct his manners. Maerlynn, a Ysanhar slave, takes a chance and gives him a blanket; it protects Jack from the severe chill of the night. Of course, it helps to have a large, warm dragon sharing the hotbox with him. The blanket also protects his back from burning on the hot metal during the day.

As the slaves are escorting -- almost carrying -- him to the barracks, Jack returns to full consciousness. Although he declares that he can walk unassisted, Maerlynn suggests that he forget his pride and keeps on helping him to walk. She provides him with a hydrating drink and food and also takes away his clothes to wash as he changes into a sackshirt.

Draycos checks out the gaps in the hedgerow across the slave area and finds that the one they had enterred by is abundantly alarmed. So he locates another place hidden somewhat by brush and starts a tunnel through the hedge. Later, he finds his tunnel being watched by Brummga troops.

Jack comes up with Plan B: he displays his entertainment skills in front of a spoiled Brummga child and is chosen as her next toy. He is taken away to the Chookoock mansion, fed, bathed and clothed is a funny costume. Now he is charged with entertaining Her Thumbleness and her friends. Unfortunately today is her High Day and all her friends want to see her new toy perform. At the end of the second day, Jack is left to sleep at the foot of Her Thumbleness's bed.

Jack waits for all activity to cease. Her Thumbleness sleeps like the dead, but older Brummgas and their servants are still about. He falls asleep as he waits, but Draycos wakes him when all is quiet. Jack heads down the stairs and breaks into Gazen's office, only to find that the computer uses an old Brummga operating system. He sets up a tap on the security camera. takes a crystal paperweight, and returns to Her Thumbleness's rooms.

After a short nap, Brummgas wake him and carry his down to Gazen's office. Although Jack expects some reaction, he finds himself being out-maneuvered by the savvy slavemaster and is soon sent to the frying pan. This is a standard hotbox with modifications, including electric wires to shock him at random intervals.

This novel illustrates both Jack's smarts and his limitations. He reads Gazen very well, but doesn't expect the attitude of personal disinterest displayed by the slavemaster or members of the Chookoock family. They are all like Her Thumbleness, used to having their own way despite the desires of their toys.

Jack has had himself sold into slavery and doesn't like it at all. The slavers are just as self-centered, egotistical and arrogant as young spoiled children or maybe Jack's Uncle Virgil. On the other hand, most of the slaves are generous and protective of each other, at least while they are slaves; maybe they would become less devoted to each other if freed from the slavemasters.

Highly recommended for Zahn fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high adventure and strange cultures.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable light Young Adult SF novel, not particularly special or original.......2006-05-12

Dragon and Slave is the third in Timothy Zahn's ongoing YA series about a 14-year-old boy, Jack Morgan, and his dragonlike alien companion, Draycos. The neat SF twist is that Draycos can twist his body partly into another dimension, and become two-dimensional in our universe. In this form he is "hosted" on Jack's body, looking like a tattoo. His species, in fact, requires such a host. He is the only survivor of an advance guard of his species, fleeing from another galaxy where they are threatened with extermination. Alas, their enemies await them in this galaxy, and Draycos has enlisted Jack's help in finding which human group is helping the bad guys and in somehow neutralizing that threat before the main group of his people arrives. The third main character is Jack's Uncle Virge -- Virge stands for "Virgil" but also punningly for "Virtual" (perhaps), as Uncle Virge is an AI running Jack's starship, his personality based on Jack's now dead real Uncle.

All that was revealed in the first book, Dragon and Thief, which I enjoyed quite a bit. The second and third volumes are rather more routine. I was still entertained, but never surprise, never thrilled.

In Dragon and Slave Jack arranges to be bought as a slave by a family he believes may be connected to the bad guys who are conniving with the aliens who want to exterminate Draycos' people. This is indeed the case, but Jack finds that as a slave his access to the information he wants is severely restricted. Instead he is treated to an unpleasant course in just how nasty slavery is. All this is affecting enough, and I was appropriately full of outrage at the evil slavers. And of course Jack and Draycos, after some setbacks, do manage to get away, with at least some useful information, and doing at least some additional good. And the series plot is advanced just a smidgen.

It's an enjoyable light SF novel, but not particularly special or original. Still, I'll keep reading the series. I suppose I'm hooked. And if Zahn isn't doing anything special, he is at least doing the ordinary stuff -- keeping the reader interested in his characters, keeping the story moving. These aren't so far essential stories, but they are decent efforts.

I picked up the original Dragonback adventure while browsing in the library. These books are suitable for children because there is no harsh language. I like them because Mr. Zahn spends a great tale, and I want to see if Dracos gets back to his people.

This module was released in 1980 as a Tournament Module at GenCon XIII. I received this module awhile ago, and found it to be one of the best that I've used. It has locations and rooms that games, especially 3rd edition D&D, wouldn't normally have, like two-story rooms for example. All the creatures and monsters that are to be fought are listed in the beginning, as well as Dungeon Master information, and a story background to give the players a general idea of why they're there.
Basically, the players, whether they are already made characters or the nine pre-generated ones they have for you, are trying to stop a large faction of Marauders, as they have been capturing and slaving other people. It has a good story, as well as some good characters, including some dual-class ones. For people looking for 4-7 level adventures in AD&D, or who just love role-playing, this is one that should be checked out.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best AD&D adventures every written.......2004-10-29

A1: Slave Pits of the Undercity is an AD&D (1st edition) adventure module for six to eight characters of level four to seven. In this module, the players are commissioned to travel to the wild city of Highport in the Pomarj, to find and destroy the leadership of a band of slavers. But, when they get to there, they find that these slavers are well-organized and well-equipped. It will take all of the characters abilities, and a little luck, to fulfill this commission!

This module is the first in a series of four. These modules are generally considered four of the finest modules to come out of AD&D 1st edition, and no one should skip past them. Besides having a wonderful story and some interesting villains, this modules has some interested tricks and traps, and includes two new monsters (the insectoid Aspis and the Giant Sundew).

So, if you are running an AD&D campaign, and want to treat your players to one of the best adventures every written, then get this module!

This is the first in a series of 4 modules, and is one of the most highly-regarded AD&D adventures of all time. David Cook vastly increased the sophistication of the game with his outstanding examples of puzzle solving, teamwork, and ingeniously deceitful "dungeon crawl" environments. For years, the Slavelords of the Pomarj have terrorized the Wild Coast, ranging as far as Greyhawk itself; now, it's time to put an end to the marauders! But of course, it's far worse than the players suspect... a classic adventure for levels 4-7.

A3: Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords is an AD&D (1st edition) adventure module for six to nine characters of level four to seven. This module picks up immediately after A2: Secret of the Slavers Stockade, when the player characters (PCs) have arrived at the next link in the slavers' chain. Their tracing of the slavers has brought them through untold dangers, and this module continues that. Following the maps that they obtained brings the PCs to a hidden city, the city of the Slave Lords. But, attacking their stronghold directly would be suicide. What can the PCs do?

This module is the third in a series of four. These modules are generally considered four of the finest modules to come out of AD&D 1st edition, and no one should skip past them. This module also has a great story, great villains, and great tricks and traps, but what sets this module apart is that the players must move about a city, attracting no attention and finding a way to get to the Slave Lords. It's really quite a lot of fun! By the way, this module has one new monster, the Storoper.

So, if you are running an AD&D campaign, and want to treat your players to one of the best adventures every written, then get this module!

The classic Pomarj Slavelords series reaches its climax as the heroic adventurers delve deep into the Drachensgrab Mountains, seeking to put an end to the slaver conspiracy. How hard could it be? Well, after you get past the demon lord Yeenoghu and into the city of the damned, it shouldn't be that bad... a gleefully malicious classic for levels 4-7.

Night is Wiesel's personal memoir, which relates his personal story before and during World War II, as he and his father are separated from his mother and sister and interned in a series of concentration camps. Dawn is the story of a member of the movement to free Palestine from British occupation and Day concerns how one could move from a past that consumes one's every thought (or even if one should).

Quote: "Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never."

I read Night in high school, and always think of it as being a particularly long book, which it is not. Wiesel manages to pack more than I would think possible into a little over a hundred pages, which relates the story of himself and his family during the Holocaust. It is a beautifully written work that relates a terrible story. I found the story of Wiesel's loss of faith and the relationship he had with his father particularly memorable. If you somehow missed this in high school, pick it up, if you didn't, find it again. It's worth it. Dawn and Day are not as catching as the first work, but are still interesting in their own way.

5 out of 5 stars The Fire! The Furnace! Look, over there!.......2000-06-01

The cries of a madwoman on an Auschwitz-bound cattle car are just one of many portents shepherding doomed souls on their way to Nazi furnaces. In "Night", the first of three books in this collection, Elie Wiesel recounts his deportation to the death camps where the rest of his family perished. The tragic weight of his witness to this obscene cruelty burdens the reader with the fates of the inmates and his reflections on the meaning of evil. Wiesel questions his god and his faith. He sees sons kill fathers: "Meir. Meir, my boy! Don't you recognize me? I'm your father... you're hurting me... you're killing your father! I've got some bread... for you too... for you too..." (p.106), and becomes intimate with death.

In "Dawn", Wiesel has migrated to Palestine and faces the duty to execute a captured prisoner. His long night of contemplation and uncertainty exposes his preoccupation with killing and killers and again with death: "Death," Kalman, the grizzled master, told me, "is a being without arms or legs or mouth or head; it is all eyes. If ever you meet a creature with eyes everywhere, you can be sure that it is death." (p.140). It is a preoccupation to be squeezed only from one who has not fully lost his faith or his humanity. A beggar explains the face of the night: "Listen," he said, digging his fingers into my arm. "I'm going to teach you the art of distinguishing between day and night. Always look at a window, and failing that look into the eyes of a man. If you see a face, any face, then you can be sure that night has succeeded day. For, believe me, night has a face." (p.126) Fear, night, suffering, and evil are his companions, and he explores them constantly. "Being afraid is nothing. Fear is only a color, a backdrop, a landscape." (p.174).

Until, in "Day", he survives a terrible accident and is faced with his own complacent acceptance of mortality. He struggles with the urge to explain to his talented young doctor the futility of fighting against death, and reaches an epiphany when he understands the tragedy of splashing others with his suffering. "Suffering brings out the lowest, the most cowardly in man. There is a phase of suffering you reach beyond which you become a brute: beyond it you sell your soul - and worse, the souls of your friends - for a piece of bread, for some warmth, for a moment of oblivion, of sleep." (p.247).

These stories are powerful and frightening,. Death is an implacable enemy, but also a partner for life who never goes away and will always win in the end. Wiesel has stared at evil, his stories are wrenching.

                                  Book Description

Night is one of the masterpieces of Holocaust literature. First published in 1960, it is the autobiographical account of an adolescent boy and his father in Auschwitz. Elie Wiesel writes of their battle for survival, and of his battle with God for a way to understand the wanton cruelty he witnesses each day. In the short novel Dawn (1961), a young man who has survived the Second World War and settled in Palestine is apprenticed to a Jewish underground movement, where the former victim is commanded to execute a British officer who has been taken hostage. In Day (previously titled The Accident, 1962), Wiesel questions the limits of the spirit and the self: Can Holocaust survivors forge a new life without the memories of the old?
Wiesel’s trilogy offers meditations on mankind’s attraction to violence and on the temptation of self-destruction.
