The same imagination that brought you the spellbinding sensuality of The Vampire Chronicles brings you the wickedly erotic and tantalizing tale of Lisa and Elliot's journey to the limits of pleasure and darkness at The Club, an exclusive island resort where forbidden fantasy meets willing flesh. A literary romp.

      Book Description

      2 cassettes / 3 hours
Read by Gillian Anderson and Gil Bellows

We all dream of the forbidden but some of us make those dreams come true . . . .

With the same mystery, menace and intensity as her Vampire books, Exit to Eden explores the forbidden by taking us The Club, a vacation paradise where no aspect of sexual pleasure is taboo. Just as The Story of O shocked the Sixties by speaking about what had only been whispered, Exit to Eden gives voices to the sexual secrets of the Eighties.

      1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..........2007-06-01

This book wasn't what I expected; never read an Anne Rice, but after reading what others had written, thought I'd buy a book of hers.
Should have saved my money; this story was too far-fetched. Didn't finish it.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not what you'd think..........2007-03-08

When I bought Exit to Eden, I was expecting a rather graphic, intense novel more along the lines of the Beauty trilogy. What I got was a whirlwind romance bracketed by The Club. The Club is much akin to the Beauty trilogy; however, The Club is played up, then drops almost completely out of sight. If you enjoy romance novels, minus the kinkiness that Anne Rice has a reputation for, then this might be right up your alley. It's got just a dash of kink, but predominantly it's a tale of two lovers. As in the Beauty books, it gets a bit repetetive after a while. Unlike her Vampire Chronicles, where the end seemed to come all to soon, by the time I made it to the end of Exit to Eden, I was good and ready to get there.

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the movie. Read the book.......2006-05-18

Don't confuse the movie with this book. There are no detectives chasing diamond thieves and this is not a comedy.

Anne Rice took a break from writing her Vampire Chronicles series to pen "Exit To Eden" under the pen name Anne Rampling. This novel explores the subject of BDSM within the context of a romantic relationship between Mistress Lisa Kelly and Elliot Slater. Kelly manages an isolated BDSM resort that offers its high-end clients an exclusive setting in which they can experience the life of a Master or Mistress. Likewise, the slaves are there of their own freewill in search of fantasy exploration.

Mistress Lisa gets first pick of the new slaves and chooses Slater. Their chemistry is undeniable from the start and intensifies throughout their time together. As the story unfolds, they fall in love with each other and must come to terms with the power dynamics of how Mistress and slave can become mutual lovers.

Although fiction, this book reveals the potential correlation between BDSM and romance. Anne Rice is a wonderful author.

4 out of 5 stars Good - maybe not 5 stars but still good........2005-01-25

I have read so much about Anne Rice - and finally managed to read one of her books - since I dislike anything with vampires thought I would give this a try. All I have to say is "where is the Club?" and where can I meet a man like Elliott?? wow! This is a very sensual tale about two people Lisa and Elliott who have enjoyed to the hilt such a heavy dose of an alternative s&m life style but when this couple finally meet - PASSION!! Much more powerful and intense for both of them than they have ever experienced. They both find themselves willing to risk anything to persue this opportunity with "love." Rice actually allows you to see them fall in love in their flight from the Club. This is a strong powerful book and I found it a page turner.

      4 out of 5 stars Nice suprise.......2004-08-19

When I picked up this book and scanned the back I caught that it was a sex club and a romance type book. I am not into S&M at all and at first I was nervous to enter into that world. But I really loved this book and have read it multiple times. Some one said it is a romance novel for people who dont like romance novels and I totally agree with that. Nothing felt cheesey, it felt heart felt and honest in its characters. Its not too hard core. If your looking for that, look elsewhere. Its just an exciting story that basically says love can find you anywhere. I am a very satisfied reader. Thank Anne.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a BIG Sylvia Browne fan (once you get past her frank and blunt exterior)!!! After reading several of her books I was very interested in getting my hands on several of her other books....however this one was a big let down.....most of this stuff you can find on the internet....there are gems of info that only Sylvia can offer, by they are far and few......this is one of those books that you should check out of the library instead of spending hard earned money on!

This book is great! Everything you need to know... and I mean everything. I read a lot of Sylvia's books, so I know a lot of what's already in here, but it's great for quick reference! There are a lot of interesting things that I didn't know about too, so it is still very interesting!!

I have always been interested in the supernatural and other mysterious things of that nature. This book is a great reference for anyone who is interested in subjects from astral travel to angels and heaven. The book is kind of like a dictionary of words that derive from those subjects that are the topic of many Sylvia Browne books making it easier for us to know what she is talking about. But overall it is a very interesting and thought provoking piece of literature.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!.......2007-02-09

Just love Sylvia Browne's work, and this book is no exception, she goes on to explain many things that sometimes just don't make sense. Highly recommend this book to anyone that's searching for answers! Thanks

The long-awaited autobiography of the science fiction master. Filled with his opinions and insights on topics ranging from his own genius and his fear of flying to politics, love, mortality, Hollywood, and religion. Non-fiction.

                    Book Description

Arguably the greatest science fiction writer who ever lived, Isaac Asimov also possessed one of the most brilliant and original minds of our time. His accessible style and far-reaching interests in subjects ranging from science to humor to history earned him the nickname "the Great Explainer." I. Asimov is his personal story--vivid, open, and honest--as only Asimov himself could tell it.

Here is the story of the paradoxical genius who wrote of travel to the stars yet refused to fly in airplanes; who imagined alien universes and vast galactic
civilizations while staying home to write; who compulsively authored more than 470 books yet still found the time to share his ideas with some of the great
minds of our century. Here are his wide-ranging thoughts and sharp-eyed observations on everything from religion to politics, love and divorce, friendship and Hollywood, fame and mortality. Here, too, is a riveting behind-the-scenes look at the varied personalities--Campbell, Ellison, Heinlein, Clarke, del Rey, Silverberg, and others--who along with Asimov helped shape science fiction.

As unique and irrepressible as the man himself, I. Asimov  is the candid memoir of an incomparable talent who entertained readers for nearly half a
century and whose work will surely endure into the future he so vividly envisioned.

                    I, Asimov

I, Asimov is, I believe, the last autobiography written by the good doctor on his favorite subject, himself. Apparrently Asimov kept a diary from the time he was a young man. I, Asimov relates a number of his personal incidences, along with his contacts with a number of writers and editors in the field with him, some good, some not so good. If you enjoy his writings you ought to read this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I'd read a little of it then call my Brother to relate the story (most of the time he knew about it). A fun book to read and great background for his novels.

                    5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming read.......2005-03-02

Isaac Asimov's writing style is easy to read, but it does not detract from his ability to be profound. This novel was captivating and brought out feelings of compassion in me. Isaac edifies everyone whom he has felt made a positive impact on his life, and in turn shows what a humanitarian he was.

Isaac was undeniably a great author having published hundreds of books. You can really get a sense of how fantastic his accomplishments are from this book. It is awe inspiring the rate at which he published books and articles. And it seems that quantity did not detract from quality.

I recommend this book if you are a fan of Isaac Asimov, autobiographies, humanism, or reading.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful reading about a reamarkable man - Highly recommen.......2005-02-04

I bought this book with some reluctance, I have not read any book by Asimov since I was in College (In Memory Still Green (old book), Nemesis (kind of new book at the time).
Supposedley with age I was somewhat a more "sophisticated" reader, whatever that means, and even though I greately regret Asimov's death at the time, I did not feel compelled to buy any more books by him after that time.
This Christmas among the several books I bought to spend the Holidays I bought I Asimov, and I did not expect too much since I thought that its fragmented structure, with different topics was kind of haphazard, and just a marketing plot to exploit the author`s fame postmortem.
Boy I was wrong!, from all the books I read this past month, this really made an impression, it was like being in the same room with the man himself, and to hear his evaluation of his memories, and his outlook in what his final days would be.
Since I was a teenager I enjoyed Asimov`s fiction and nofiction, but I can say that I enjoyed the most when he wrote about himself, and the world he inhabited, I highly appreciated his sincerity, humor, and authenticity.
It always warmed me to read about how this boy from very humble origins got to get to the top of the the craft that he so much loved.
This was a very emotional book to read, I laughed aloud many times, and shed a tear at some of the last essays.
I highly recommend this to anyone who has or has not read Asimov in the past, as an account of a man`s life, his virtues, deffects, accomplishments, and the legacy he left for his family, readers and fellow human beings.
Finally, I do not think that the Good Doctor had to worry about being forgotten any time soon, each new genaration that reads any of his books will keep his ideas and dreams alive.

4 out of 5 stars More Interesting Than His Works of Fiction.......2004-12-19

The first biography that I ever read. It was written in the final year of Isaac Asimov's life. I found the book to be entertaining on many fronts. First of all, Asimov was a devout atheist all the way until the end, although he was technically Jewish. Secondly, it was interesting to find out that a man that wrote over 50 science fiction books and over 400 books in all, almost never left the city of New York...ever! Finally, what I liked most about the book was how flawed an individual Asimov appeared to be, especially in the characterization of his children. He obviously loved his daughter and despised his son, David, although he refused to say that in so many words. This book was clearly better than any science fiction novel that Asimov ever wrote.

The accomplishments of Isaac Asimov are very great indeed. He is probably the all- time best explainer of science to the layman that the world has ever known. His mastery and competence in most areas of scientific learning is a tribute to his great intelligence and persistence in learning. He is considered by those who know the field one of the premier writers of Science Fiction. He wrote something like four- hundred and seventy books, and provided to his readers a little library . His ideas, especially those on the ethical code for Robots are now part of the intellectual legacy of mankind.
With all this he had his limitations which were in a sense the limitations of his virtues. His work on humanistic subjects on the Bible and on Shakespeare reveal the same kind of one- dimensional quantitative mind so suited to explaining science and so poor to comprehending humanities. Poetic complexity is simply not part of his make- up.
This autobiogrphy has the same kind of flat surface and tone that Asimov's other writings do. It is possible to fault him on all the countings , all the self- serving business of trying to establish his own value by counting up the numbers of things he has done. It is possible too to fault him for his bad relation to key people in his life, including his first wife and son. It is possible also to see that his great scope in learning was achieved at a price in depth. Asimov is not a poetic, and not a religious and not a truly literary soul. But again he is a person who has contributed a tremendous amount to the broad public's understanding of Science.
As I do not believe ' numbers can be the true measure ' of the worth of what is most important I have a quite reserved attitude toward Asimov. A unique and distinctive and in many ways remarkable figure but by no means a great writer.

                          Book Description

Millions of readers worldwide have treasured the visionary brilliance of Carlos Castaneda, who first explore the world of the Yaqui Indian sorcerer in The Teachings of don Juan. Now, at last, don Juan returns in The Power of Silence -- wise, infuriating, capable or working miracles and playing practical jokes, but always seeking the wisdom of the warrior.

The Power of Silence is Castaneda's most astonishing book to date -- a brilliant flash of knowledge that illuminates the far reaches of the human mind. Through don Juan's mesmerizing stories, the true meaning of sorcery and magic is finally revealed. Honed in the desert of Sonora, the visions of don Juan give us the vital secrets of belief and self-realization that are transcendental and valid for us all. It is Castaneda's unique genius to show us that all wisdom, strength, and power lie within ourselves -- unleashed with marvelous energy and imaginative force in the teachings of don Juan -- and in the writings of his famous pupil, Carlos Castaneda

5 out of 5 stars Power of silence and power of intention.......2007-09-03

I came to this Castaneda book upon its mention in Wayne Dyer's "The Power of Intention." Reading them together is a unique experience, and one I suggest.

As much as "Silence" is about the typical themes as other reviewers have pointed out, the book has a great deal to say about the power of intention. Cultivating full, unemotional intention ("ruthlessness") causes powerful ability to harness perception. Weak, conflicted intention causes one to be acted upon. There is much more to it, of course, and Castaneda explains in dense detail. You'll find yourself rereading passages at times in order to follow--but the effort is worthwhile.

The book was written 30 years ago, but is an undated, forceful read. If you have any bent toward spirituality, I'd recommend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars To Carlos, with gratitude.......2007-06-22

Carlos Castaneda was one of the most controversial writers of the twentieth century. Some in academia branded him a fraud for claiming his stories were biographical rather than fiction, while lauding him as a great novelist for exposing a mass audience to otherwise inaccessible philosophical abstractions they claimed were largely plagiarized. Each of his works is a piece of a larger puzzle, which makes it impossible to critique any one book without addressing the larger context into which it fits.

His first two books, "Teachings of Don Juan" and "A Separate Reality" describe experiences induced by ingesting psychotropic hallucinogenics prepared by a Yaqui Indian shaman from Sonora, Mexico he called don Juan Matus, and accounted for his becoming a guru to a generation seeking short cuts to spiritual enlightenment, as well as his lifelong interest in the relationship between perception and reality, a theme now explored in many popular books on consciousness and quantum physics. Unfortunately, these books remain his best selling works, in spite of Castaneda refuting their importance in his later works. Readers would be best served to skip these and avoid the risk of being turned off to Castaneda and missing the more stimulating works that followed.

His third and fourth works were "Journey to Ixtlan" and "Tales of Power." In Ixtlan he admits to over-estimating the value of his drug experiences, which caused him to overlook the more profound teachings of don Juan which became the focus of future writings. What emerges is a spiritual discipline dating back to the Pre-Colombian Toltec sorcerers of Latin America, culminating with don Juan's departure from our world, effectively ending Castaneda's direct affiliation.

In his fifth and sixth works "Second Ring of Power" and "Eagles Gift" Castaneda suffers strange flashbacks of what seem to be memory fragments of events he is unable to fit into any logical time sequence. In his seventh and eighth works, "Fire From Within" and "Power of Silence," Castaneda succeeds in reconstructing his lost memories, which derive from teachings previously administered by don Juan while Castaneda was in a "heightened" state of awareness.

In books nine and ten, "Art of Dreaming" and "Active Side of Infinity," Castaneda focuses on what he describes as inorganic predators from another dimension, some having the power to imprison humanity in "ordinary reality" so they can feed on the dark emotional energies we produce when succumbing to the negative thoughts they insert into our minds.

In later years several seemingly substantiating works appeared by two of Castaneda's female apprentices, Taisha Abelar and Florinda Donner-Grau. In addition, two scathing exposés were also published by two of his ex-wives. The first, "Magical Journey with Carlos Castaneda" by first wife, Margaret Runyon, offers little corroboration, since her marriage pre-dates the time when the bulk of Castaneda's adventures were claimed to have occurred. While steadfast that Castaneda was a sorcerer, she doubts the existence of don Juan, even claiming authorship of many of the concepts Castaneda ascribed to him.

The second, and more credible work, is "Sorcerer's Apprentice," by well-known writer Amy Wallace, daughter of the late best selling novelist Irving Wallace. Here again, we find little corroboration since the time of the events she describes is well after the period when Castaneda's relationship with don Juan is alleged to occur. What the book does provide is a troubling look inside Castaneda's final years, a picture of descent into what seems sexual addiction and possibly madness, leaving one to wonder if Castaneda was just one cup of cool-aid short of a Jonestown.

Many have asked why I put any stock whatsoever in Castaneda. A story from my autobiography, "The Vortex" may shed some light. A year before Castaneda published his first book I had an experience that would remain a mystery until Castaneda published "Power of Silence" twenty years later.

For a brief time, in my youth, I became a practicing Muslim, meticulously performing the complex prayer ritual five times a day. Then one night, sitting in my car, frustrated and complaining at not being able to find the address of my next sales appointment, something inside me snapped. It was as if some part of me had disconnected from my body and assumed control, lecturing me about my lack of discipline. A profound calm settled over me, rendering me simultaneously detached and engaged. For two days my sales figures soared. It was as if no one could say no to me. On the evening of the second day I decided to put my new state of being to the acid test by visiting my parents. Their behavior was so uncharacteristically supportive I hardly recognized them. It was enough to convince me that I was now living in an altered reality. But by the following morning I had returned to "normal." So distracting had this event been that I completely forgot to perform my Muslim prayers, and in fact, never did so again.

Twenty years later, in a chapter of "Power of Silence" entitled "Place of No Pity" Castaneda describes a very similar experience. In the aftermath of the event don Juan explains that humans are like televisions stuck on a channel called "self-preoccupation," lacking the energy to tune into any of the vast array of other channels available to us. To change channels, he explains, we first need to accumulate energy, by practicing rituals that are deliberate, precise and repetitious. Do this long enough and eventually our stored energy precipitates a shift to a channel where self-importance and self pity become impossible. Once this happens we connect with the force that controls the entire universe, a force don Juan called "intent," and everything can be bent to our will and even more channels can be opened, assuming we remember to keep practicing the rituals that save our energy.

This one realization alone was enough to inspire me to dedicate my autobiography "To Carlos, with gratitude."

4 out of 5 stars Power of Silence.......2007-04-05

Very "heady" book but what book by Carlos isn't. I would start with "The Teachings of Don Juan; A Yaqui Way of Knowledge ". Be prepared for confusion, doubt and a little fear but these books are great. I began reading them when I was 20. I still love them at 54. They all can be read over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Informative.......2005-12-15

Definitely a wonderful book. For those following the teachings of the other books, this book provides more useful information. The path that Castaneda elucidated is fraught with controvery and extreme views (read the other reviews). I found it useful to read and judge for myself.

What Castaneda wrote about is not fiction however it is a difficult path that very few ever advance upon, thus the angry reviews of those calling Castaneda a fraud due to their own failure. Its also a path that those given to fantasy and believing in their own 'specialness' jump on and thus follow blindly with no lasting gains, making up their experience as they go and making sure others hear about it.

Definitely not a path for everyone but certainly open to sober verification. Also a great book for those looking for a well written and gripping book.

I believe Castaneda's genius as well as his contribution to mankind is yet to be fully appreciated. I am grateful for the gift of his writings and wisdom.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Spritual Journey.......2005-08-13

Like all of Castaneda's books, "Power of Silence" grips you from the start, and before you know it you've finished the book. I found this one to be interesting because Don Juan talks about his past. He tells Castaneda about how he got started in sorcery, and even gives details about his benefactors past. Crucial details on the path of knowledge.
