Book Description

Themes of identity, faith, and redemption combine as a disillusioned KGB assassin and an insecure female U.S. diplomat track down an Ivy League professor running a prostitution ring in Ukraine.

Anatoly Filatov is the “whiskey priest,” a despairing Communist true believer, whose world comes crashing down with the collapse of the USSR. Jane Sweet is the foreign-service officer, a Ukrainian-American woman who discovers her identity, as both a woman and a Ukrainian, while liberating herself from her past. The action heats up as Filatov, who is a part-time hit man for the Russian Mafia, kills three American professors in Vienna. The fourth, a cynical Ivy League professor and Soviet émigré, Igor Bazarov, escapes to Kiev. The four professors stole millions of dollars from the Mafia and invested in a prostitution ring that exploits Ukrainian women.

Filatov and Sweet pursue Bazarov throughout Ukraine, and, along the way, Filatov seduces Sweet. As the two close in on Bazarov, Sweet realizes she has been used—and plots revenge in a stunning conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars Whiskey Priest - a riveting post Soviet, post Cold War crime novel........2006-08-30

Whiskey Priest is more in the tradition of Graham Greene and Alan Furst than John Le Carré. While Furst has developed a flair for writing historical novels situated in Europe during the late 1930s and early war years of 1939 and 1940, Alexander Motyl captures the strange twists and perversions of post-communist transitions for characters operating in Vienna as well as Kyiv and Lviv in Ukraine after the end of the Cold War and collapse of the Soviet Union. Entangled in a web of international intrigue, the main protagonists feature a Russian Communist who assassinated Ukrainian nationalists for the KGB but now works as a hit man for the Russian mafia, a bright young American diplomat struggling to come to terms with her Ukrainian-American identity, and a Soviet émigré to the U.S. who, in Motyl's devilish words, becomes "a cynical Ivy League professor" involved in sordid activities such as larceny and running a prostitution ring in Ukraine. A distinguished professor and author of many scholarly works as well as an accomplished painter, Motyl displays in Whiskey Priest a new talent for writing historical fiction. His first crime novel is a gem.

Book Description

In Winter's Heart, the ninth volume in the best-selling Wheel of Time series, the prophesied Last Battle (Tarmon Gai'don) between the Light and the Shadow is imminent. But Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, stands in the Shadow's way. Darkfriends, Shadowspawn, and the Forsaken will try to kill Rand to keep him from fighting. The forces of Light fear that Rand will go mad and cause another Breaking of the World. Male and female magic clash to dazzling effect in the colorful tapestry that the New Statesman and Society called Jordan's “entirely convincing and compelling alternative world.”·Winter's Heart debuted at number one on The New York Times bestseller list in November 2000. “The Wheel of Time ... is a fantasy tale seldom equaled and still less often surpassed in English.” — Chicago Sun-Times

I ordered this book and paid approx. $75.00. When I got it I tried to burn it into my computer so I could put it on my MP3 player and it wouldn't rip. It ripped half the tracks and not the other half it would only come up as error. So if you want to buy this book don't buy the New Millennium Audio version, it SUCKS!!!

3 out of 5 stars Is a tortoise slow?.......2002-05-03

From my experience with Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time Series, I found this book slow...
I recieved no real new information to keep me interested in the series. I loved the first seven books, but eight and nine have been less than appealing. You are still wondering after these last two books how these two books got placed in the series since they give no real light on anything that led up to book seven. This book just doesn't do anything for me.

Is Robert Jordan still doing the Light's work? Even loyal fans have to wonder. (And if you're not a fan yet, you'll have to read the previous 6,789 pages in this bestselling series to understand what all the fuss is about.)

Everyone's in agreement on the Wheel of Time's first four or five volumes: They're topnotch, where-have-you-been-all-my-life epic fantasy, the best in anybody's memory at the time since The Lord of the Rings. But a funny thing happened on the way to Tarmon Gai'don, and many of those raves have become rants or (worse) yawns. Jordan long ago proved himself a master at world-building, with fascinating characters, a positively delicious backstory, and enough plot and politics to choke a Trolloc, but that same strength has become a liability. How do you criticize what he's doing now? You want more momentum and direction in the central plot line, but it's the secondary stories that have made the world so rich. And as in the last couple of books, (A Crown of Swords and The Path of Daggers), Jordan doesn't really succeed at pursuing either adequately, leaving a lot of heavily invested readers frustrated.

Winter's Heart at least shows some improvement, but it's still not The Eye of the World. Elayne's still waiting to take the crown of Andor; the noticeably absent Egwene is still waiting to go after the White Tower; Perrin gets ready to pursue the Shaido but then disappears for the rest of the book. About the only excitement comes with the long-awaited return of Mat Cauthon and a thankfully rock 'em, sock 'em finale in which Rand finally, finally changes the balance of power in his fight against the Dark One. --Paul Hughes

Don't care any more after two dull books in a row. Perrin has to find his kidnapped wife, Mat actually does a bit of potential wife kidnapping.

Rand gets vengeful on traitorous elements among his magic dudes.

The Aes Sedai continue to bicker, like, well, violent sorceresses.

Sound familiar? Sounds long and drawn out and badly in need of editing, basically.

This book is garbage. Filler to make money. A travesty. All the others were awesome to OK. But, let's face it - Get on with it! I'm not really interested in +++pages of Matt traveling with the circus, or Elayne's torment becoming Queen, or Egwene's mishaps with other Aes Sedai. I want some ACTION. What's going on in the AshAman (sp?)'s heads- I mean, how cool would that be since the Taint is gone? I'm sick of this. But I'll still read the rest, who knows how much time I've already spent. SURELY IT MUST BE OVER SOON. Not even Tolkien could go on this long. Wrap it up!

      5 out of 5 stars Truly a wonderful novel.......2004-11-05

The story is set in the 1870s. Julienne is rich, beautiful and intelligent, she is related to the Habsburg family and lives in a palace in Austria. Yet she is unhappy, her abusive husband terrorizes her and her children. She decides to flee; leaves Austria with her children and goes to Paris. She lives the life of a middle-class woman, finds new friends and meets a young British nobleman, Edward, who is trying to escape his own past. Julienne and Edward fall in love and slowly their wounds begin to heal -- but Julienne's husband is still searching for her, and the war breaking out between France and Prussia brings new hardships...

There is also a film made of his book, a French film called Princesse Alexandra, it's a nice one but simplifies the story too much, also, they changed things like the characters' names which makes no sense. The book is better.

      5 out of 5 stars A modern classic.......1997-10-29

Truly a modern classic! When an abused wife escapes her husband and flees to Paris to live, she meets a man who is trying to escape his own pain by running to Paris to die. Full of irony, rich in historical descriptions, and un-put-downable!

Here is an intelligence agent's shocking report offering evidence that at least some flying sauers COME FROM INSIDE EARTH. Aliens have established undergound bases around the planet. An ancient tunnel system has existed since the time of Atlantis. Entrance ways can be found in many major cities. Some government and military officials have taken the side of the aliens in an attempt to control earth's human population.

2 out of 5 stars Surely Better Material Elsewhere.......2005-06-27

How could I not be intrigued by a book entitled "Underground Alien Bases" by a man calling himself "Commander X"? Well I was, and I bought it.

              The intrigue stopped there.

As far as so called conspiracy theorists go, I am willing to pass a critical eye over most things, no matter how apparently outlandish, with an open and reasonable mind. This book sorely lacked in terms of depth of content, and for someone who claims to be privy to highly sensetive gov't and military intelligence I wonder why our boy X draws so heavily on other people's books and writings?

A good question is: why does it take a top secret, super-duper, risking-it-all-to-bring-us-the-truth, Fox Mulder type intelligence officer to present us with a book that is essentially little more than a compendium of other people's writings on the subject; mixed with a liberal sprinkling of "I have been told, but cannot verify..." and "According to one man, who shall remain nameless..." - even admitting in a later section of the book that the content thereafter is questionable at best???

He never delves into the "juicy" heart of a matter, merely whetting your appetite with a tale of some sort of underground alien base in one part of the world before closing and jetting off to another part of the world to tell you briefly and in the same style about an underground alien base there. Needless to say, due to a number of reasons, not least the name of the author and the high-school-magazine paperback quality of the book itself, most of what is being relayed is simply too incredible to swallow, even for a person who has an open mind regarding so called underground alien bases.

As I said I have no problem with the idea of "underground alien bases", it certainly isn't an idea original to "our boy X to the Z" and too much has been made of it over the years to merely scoff at the entire concept. I do however have a problem with this book.

After reading through this book I get the distinct impression that Commander X is a sweaty, basement-bound recluse resembling Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons and not a high-level intelligence officer as we are led to believe.

As the title implies, there must be better material elsewhere and I for one advise you to keep looking for it.

I've read the reviews of all his books, and going by the reviewers that give his books 5 stars (and the blind-sheep reviewers that agree), here's some free money-saving info:
In your search for "intelligence", try being intelligent enough to download a p2p file sharing program, and exercise your brain to come up with some keywords for your downloads. If that's too beyond your reach, just stay with the relative comfort of the Web, and use Google - and be sure to use that brain for your search phrase! LOL. Seriously people, everything in Commansder X's skimpy books can be had, along with much, much more for free on the Internet - yes, that not only includes the Web (which is only part of the Internet, contrary to what the 5-star reviewers have yet discovered), but ALL users of the Internet that happen to use p2p programs - which, by the way, are free too: LimeWire, BearShare, etc. etc. etc.

              2 out of 5 stars Just a little whacky.......2002-03-16

Just a little to hard too believe. This book did served it's purpose to entertain me. This is the firt Commander X book I've read, why the Commander X name, just use your real name please. No proof in what this guy is saying, there's always something when it comes to getting real proof. This guy might be nuts and I like books on U.F.O's, or this guy is on the level, not likely but maybe.

5 out of 5 stars Much closer to the truth than you think!.......2001-08-18

The tales Commander X tells are very similar to what my father used to tell us as kids in the early 1960s. He was attached to the CIA and stationed at the Pentagon. The idea of underground alien bases may seem wild to most people, but dad told the very same stories as Commander X. We had our mail censored, phones tapped and guys in suits following us around taking pictures. I was floored when I read Underground Alien Bases as it was the same stuff I heard as a kid. Not a book to be just blown off.

this book is absolute trash, but it is a very funny read. But if you try to take a seriously, you will put it down after a few pages, then go out in your back yard, start a roaring fire and then toss it in. And the name commander X is very corny. What is he commanding? the wallets of paranormal believers?

It is written acceptably, and the subject matter is certainly "out there". But, if you discard the flimsy cover material and look at the content, it is a great read. If this was all made up...it would be a great read. If this is all true it is even a greater read. I found it interesting and compelling. My initial reaction to it was astonishment that someone would publish such a crazy work. But now, after reading it, I am not so sure. Certainly a worth while read. Well...shall I be comfortable in my ignorance or, shall I know the truth about our world? Read this book and make up your own mind.

I enjoyed this book, because of some of the insider information that he brings out. I liked the insights into the invisible world, for example, how certain aliens are working with Satan the Devil, how Satan looks like a reptillian, including his hosts. His description of these other species in our galaxy who are neither benoviolent nor aggressive towards us could be very true. YAHOWAH didn't just create us, all by ourselves in the universe; he created all types of creatures, who eventually have to be taught the truth and given the chance to repent and obey his Son YAHO-hoshu-WAH. That is the purpose of the First Resurrection, for all the true believers to be raised up as King-Priests and given authority over the universe by the direction of the Son. I recommend it.

There may or may not be underground bases run by aliens, but this "book" reads like a totally disorganized term-paper written by a college freshman on acid, and you won't be able to come to any conclusions from this long rambling dissertation. Save your money.

I just finished reading Kavah. Awesome!! There have only been about 10 books I have been able to finish reading cover to cover, I usually get bored or end up getting into other things. This story totally grabbed me and pulled me in. Like the other reviewers I could not put this book down. I wish I could put all the things I felt and enjoyed about this book here, however I do not want to ruin any of it for anyone else. I think Brenda did an awesome job with this story on many levels. And I have to say after reading this book Brenda has a new fan!

I took a chance buying this book since there weren't any reviews on it. After reading a few pages, I couldn't put it down, it just grabbed me, I wanted to find out what happened next.

After a few pages, you can totally imagine everything, the people, situations and even very small details about the surroundings.

This is not a shoot'em style Earth vs. aliens book, however the mystery and technical environment are present such as underground locations, engineering marvels and under silence contract scientists. The environment is very technical yet not too far fetched.

Simply put, this is a keeper, I would like to read the book again and discover new things I might have missed because of the excitement while reading it.

I love this sci-fi book. It's original and kept me turning the pages. Couldn't put it down. I had fun reading this story about a NASA worker and aliens living and working underground. Never imagined anything like it before.
I recommend it to everyone. Love Kavah!

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction for skeptics.......2004-02-25

James Adams' book is the best introuduction to Christianity and the Episcopal Church that I've seen for "skeptical" types--scientists, other agnostics, and spouses of Episcopalians. It's funny, non-threatening, and while I don't theologically agree with everything he says, there's certainly room for it in the Church.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Great Intro.......2002-07-23

This is a great introduction to the Episcopal Church for anyone who considers themself to be an intellectual, a skeptic, or a secular humanist. Adams is witty and backs up his arguments with a theology that invites people in to experience Christ without fearing that they'll be brainwashed.

                  4 out of 5 stars A helpful book.......2000-07-09

This could be a helpful book for any spiritual searcher who is turned off by the religious right, but would really like to be part of a church. James Adams offers many helpful interpretations of scripture, and a historical background that will help readers see that Christian philosophers and church leaders back through the centuries have raised most of the questions that today's doubters raise. The only quibble I had while reading it is that I think the author occasionally pushes his arguments too far - but this is a book that's just right for people who are naturally skeptical and like to argue. I'm glad I bought it and will pass it on to others

4 out of 5 stars Having doubts is part of being religious . . ........2000-03-25

. . . or, as the Episcopal priest of a friend of mine told him, "A good Episcopalian is an athiest two days a week." It is somewhat in that spirit that James Adams' SO YOU THINK YOU'RE NOT RELIGIOUS was written. It's for people who think they're not conventionally religious but who like the idea of belonging to a faith community (a local church), or who have some religious beliefs but not, they think, to the extent their church would demand. If you would feel like a hypocrite standing up and reciting the Apostles' or Nicene creeds ("We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus his only begotten Son . . ."), then this book is for you.

Adams makes some very useful points in this layman-oriented book. First, many churches--especially Espiscopal churches, his home base--are open to skeptics. Second, many skeptics have more beliefs than they realize. Third, many of your pewmates are more flexible than you may think and perhaps they are somewhat skeptical themselves. Fourth, reciting the ancient creeds is not a scientific formula ("WE belive THAT") but instead a confession of corporate hope and longing ("WE believe IN"). Adams even adds some helpful pointers on how to go "church-shopping"--very useful in this age of ecclesiastical diversity (for example: in other countries of the world, an "Anglican" church is merely a church that is descended from the Church of England, but here in the USA it's often used as a code word to indicate conservatism of style and theology).

My quibbles with Adams' generous and useful book are minor. I am uncomfortable with his assertion that "[c]hurches with a racial and cultural mix exist, but by examining them closely the visitor will likely find them to be congregations in transition from one kind of people to another." (p. 190). This is uncomfortably close to the late Mike Royko's observation that racial integration in Chicago exists between the time the first black family moves in and the last white family moves out. Happily, I know of several Episcopal churches in Chicago that entertain a racial/ethnic mix; in fact, they do better than other upper-middle-class denominations in that regard.

This is a fine book for an inquirer's class or just to read alone. Although meant for Episcopalians, it works well for people who would really like to join a church but who fear they would have to check their brain at the cloakroom before entering the sanctuary. Adams shows the ethical, spiritual, intelligent and honorable approach to embark upon a religious life.
