Book Description

In these three stories—two of which form the basis of the award-winning film We Don’t Live Here Anymore—literary master Andre Dubus traces the lives of two couples who married too young, and who are intricately entwined by love and friendship, jealousy and understanding.
Hank and Jack have been best friends since high school. Hank married Edith, the prettiest girl Jack had ever seen, and Jack married Terry, whom he thinks he may no longer love. But Hank and Edith’s adultery didn’t begin or end with Jack and Terry. Moving, perceptive, rendered in clear-eyed prose, We Don’t Live Here Anymore maps with preternatural insight the often separate lands of love and marriage.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Effortlessly entertaining and ultimately relatable..........2007-07-27

Andre Dubus is a masterful storyteller, as anyone whose read his work can attest to. He may generally focus on the one subject of relationships and marriage but he is so connected with that subject that the lack of creative range is forgiven. In this collection he gives us three novellas that focus on a group of four people. Jack, Terry, Hank and Edith, and with each respective story he breathes life into his characters and further cements them into the readers memory.

`We Don't Live Here Anymore' is the first novella in this collection and it's a brilliant way to start things off. Told through the eyes of Jack we are brought in on the lives of two married couples, Jack and Terry and Hank and Edith. We quickly learn that Jack is sleeping with Edith. They both love each other very much. Jack has slowly grown cold concerning his wife Terry. She is lazy and boring and not the woman he thought he knew. Edith on the other hand is spontaneous and young and she showers him with affection. Edith's husband Hank is an adulterous man who doesn't love her and has betrayed her before, leaving her adultery to come easy. Hank in fact has fallen in love with Terry who still loves her husband deeply but has grown depressed and hungry for attention, attention that Hank is willing to provide. Told with such brilliant dialog and heart breaking realism, the reader can truly find a place within this all too real story.

In `Adultery' we get a better look into the eyes of Edith and her relationship with husband Hank. We see that they have both come to a mutual understanding and carry on in their individual affairs, but while Hank seems to stay stifled in his way of thinking Edith grows from her relationship with dying ex-priest Joe. Edith becomes much more alive here and becomes endearing to the reader. I fell in love with her and sobbed along with her in the end. You can see that much of her character's persona in the film adaptation of the first novella is a direct derivative of the life Dubus breathes into her here.

It's in `Finding a Girl in America' though that my heart was truly touched. There's a passage in the first few pages where Hank, now separated with Edith and falling in love with nineteen year old Lori, dreams of his unborn child, the one he never knew almost was, and it brought me to tears. Now maybe this has to do with the fact that my wife and I are expecting our first, but regardless, the dream and Hanks reaction to the dream is both moving and emotionally connected to the reader. The balance of the story as well shows how this one event in his life helped mature him and push him in a new direction where he craves the stability and normality he once considered unnatural.

Upon closing this book one feels closure because all the lose ends that seemed to unravel within the first novella seem to find themselves by the closing words and make good for all their misspent mistakes. I still feel a sense of solace for Jack and Terry for I fear they may never find happiness, but Edith and Hank are so well fleshed out and discovered that I feel warmth towards them both and am encouraged by their struggle to find themselves and their journey. `We Don't Live Here Anymore' tackles some very controversial yet ultimately familiar subjects and is a collection that will sit well with the reader and remain in their minds for a long time to come.

5 out of 5 stars As Fine a Collection of Novellas as Anyone Ever Published.......2006-06-09

The three novellas collected here -- We Don't Live Here Anymore, Adultery, and Finding a Girl in America -- all concern an overlapping cast of characters, notably our man Hank, a Dubus doppelganger who can't seem to find the right balance between freedom and devotion, but who is drawn with such empathy that we forgive him even as those he has loved and wronged forgive him in the stories. My favorite of the three is Finding a Girl in America, and it's good enough as a standalone novella, but even better when read against the backdrop of the two that precede it.

My only gripe about this collection is that the publishers removed "The Pretty Girl", which was included in an earlier edition, but it's a choice that makes perfect sense, because "The Pretty Girl" is not linked with the other three novellas.

If you enjoy these stories, consider checking out "Voices from the Moon," Dubus's finest novella, collected in his Selected Stories. Check out "Rosa," too, and, hell, everything he ever committed to print.

5 out of 5 stars I Will Champion This Collection Until I Die.......2006-04-18

Important lessons from this amazing book:

1. Less is not always more, more is more.
2. Characters can be complex. In fact, they must be.
3. Dubus' world is a luscious, richly painted place--why do other writers render their world in black and white?
4. Stories can wrap their arms around you and embrace you for days--even weeks. They can slow you down, in all the best ways.
5. Details--By the end of this trio of novellas, you will have been to another place. It's good to get away.

Get lost here. It's an important place to be.

5 out of 5 stars You'll think about it long after you've put it down........2006-01-22

This book is a collection of three novellas. Each containing the same characters as we trace them through the years. The stories follow two young couples, Jack and Terry and Hank and Edith. Jack and Hank are both literature professors at a small New England college and Terry and Edith are housewives and mothers. They're all best friends and they all married too young. This book is broken into three novellas, "We Don't Live Here Anymore," features Jack's first-person narrative. "Adultery" is Edith's version of events, and the final story, "Finding a Girl in America" is Hank's saga of trying to move on after a failed marriage. The characters in these stories are so vivid. That's the one thing I love about Andre Dubus's writing power. The characters just aren't fictional people, they become people living in the house next to you. Sure, it is bleak and depressing at times, but what marriage isn't?

1 out of 5 stars Immaturity abounds in these dismal stories........2005-12-06

I was very interested in the first story in this collection because at the outset it looked like it would take a look beneath the surface of relationships. Instead the story quickly became a silly adolescent soap opera acted out by supposed adults. The four central characters are comprised of two married couples. Each spouse has an affair with his/her friend's spouse. And they all pretend this isn't going on and that they're still all friends. The four characters are among the most unlikeable, narcissistic, immature, non-credible characters I've ever read about. The two male characters teach at a college, but could just as easily be portrayed as accountants, factory workers, or computer programmers. The characters have absolutely no depth. The men in the story clearly suffer from "Peter Pan" syndrome. The author is trying so hard to say something important with these stories, but it's a mystery what that is. In short he seems to think that immature behavior somehow represents honesty. If you want to read about four people who never outgrew high school adolescent behavior this may be the book for you. Apparently Dubus saw something he liked in these characters because he wrote three novellas including them. Unfortunately the movie is just as dismal as the book--even more so actually.

5 out of 5 stars A great finale to the Riftwar saga!.......2007-04-24

I would strongly urge you to read Magician (now in two books as Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master) and Silverthorn before reading this book, as it would make much more sense.

Murmandamus has returned to again seek the death of Arutha, Prince of Krondor, and to bring war to the Kingdom in the world of Midkemia. Staging his own death, Arutha sets out with his friends to find and kill his enemy. Murmandamus has not been idle in the year that passed since the last attempt - some 50,000 have heard his call to arms, gathering in the Northlands, amongst them moredhel (a type of dark elf), goblins, trolls, giants and renegade humans.

As Arutha and his companions venture north, they are captured and taken to the city of Armengar, where an old banished enemy now rules. Yet in the light of the threat of Murmandamus, they work together in the defense of Armengar. Against the backdrop of this action, Pug the magician and Tomas, a strange mix of human and Valheru Dragon Lord, seek out the one thought dead - the powerful sorcerer Macros the Black. Their journey takes them both through space and time, in an effort to gain knowledge of the true nature of the Enemy (the true power behind Murmandamus) and how they can try to stop it.

Feist's strong suit is character building, and this novel is no exception - by the end each feels like some old friend. Feist does well in pacing the book also - keeping enough suspense and flipping between different characters to make you keep turning the pages.

There are a few questions of logic that may be raised - most notably in the manipulation of time. These small queries do not make the book less worthy of the 5 stars I gave it, and I thoroughly recommend it :)

5 out of 5 stars Superb culmination to a thrilling trilogy.......2006-10-14

A Darkness At Sethanon is the concluding book in the Riftwar trilogy and brings the saga, kicked off by Magician and continued by Silverthorn to a brilliant and stunning conclusion. This book is from an author at the height of his storytelling powers, and once started, simply cannot be put down. The plot is stunning in its execution and is totally gripping and fast moving. Add superb characterisation to this and you have a mix that is an out and out winner.

The story sees Pug and Tomas scouring the universe for signs of Macros The Black, the great sorcerer who they hope will be able to give them information on the true nature of 'The Enemy.' It is becoming clearer by the day that this would appear to be power behind the Morehdrel Murmandamus and his armies, and their threat to The Kingdom of The Isles. In the meantime the war against Murmandamus is being fought by characters such as Arutha, Guy, and Jimmy The Hand.
Pug and Tomas do eventually find Macros, and learn to their horror the true nature of 'The Enemy.' They also learn that not just Midkemia is under threat but the very existence of all living things....

The Riftwar trilogy features some of the best characters that Ray Feist has ever created. It established his 'eternal' characters of Pug, Macros, and Tomas and indeed these all appear to varying degrees in the following books and series concerning Midkemia. If anything though, the lesser characterisation in later books, has not been quite up to the strength of the likes of Jimmy and Arutha, and these characters have been sorely missed in these later volumes. It is of no surprise, therefore, that Feist has returned to these characters to write extra volumes about them... Enjoy then A Darkness At Sethanon, a surperbly realised tale, featuring all of Feist's best characters.

As a footnote, readers who look forward to seeing Feist return to this kind of superlative form are advised to pick up a copy of his latest Darkwar volume 'Into A Dark Realm.' Having read this I can only conclude that it is a return to the kind of form that Feist enjoyed during the Riftwar novels and sets the reader up for what promises to be a superb third installment. If you cannot wait for this book to be released in the US then order it now from Amazon UK, the delivery charge is worth it because you will not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome series!!!.......2006-03-19

Here ends the first of the Midkemia series. Great, awesome etc. Feist delivers a top notch read and only gets better as he goes. The cast of characters are truely unique and memorable, especially Jimmy the Hand which in later books becomes one of my all time favorite literary characters.
If you love fantasy, you have to get this!!

If you like books like this one, might I suggest another I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2006-02-07

A Darkness at Sethanon is the conclusion of the Riftwar Saga and truly brings this saga to a magnificent close. Jimmy the Hand, Pug, Mystery Character ( dont' want to spoil ), and Tomas truly richen the experience as Feist's character building really grows.

In Silverthorn they found that a dark power was hidden behind the enemy forces they have been having problems with - and this dark power is a mystery that Pug decided he must go back through the Rift to deduce a plan of destroying the evil.

Pug has truly become strong in his powers and Tomas is finally understanding the depths of his powers as a 'reborn' dragonlord.

The battles are not comparable to the time spent with Pug and Tomas ( I truly enjoyed the chemistry that these characters have and thier desires for good to succeed. )

Jimmy the hand, the thief from the mockers steals the time that Feist keeps us away from Pug and Tomas and I cannot wait for them to get together on something ( maybe?? )

I say if you have read the beginning you have no choice but to pick this up, but if you have not started this series and feel a bit 'iffy' do yourself a favor and pick it up!

4 out of 5 stars The conclusion tot he saga.......2005-09-27

A Darkness at Sethanon finishes out the story of the Rift War saga, 4 books encompassing a great adventure and some memorable characters. Before reading this review please be aware that there may be one spoiler that I feel the need to touch on.

I must start off by saying I really enjoy Mr. Feist's writting style. It, to me anyway, is easy to read and has a flow to it that makes you want to keep reading. I have mostly read Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms book until recently and am very glad I have expanded my authors as this is a gem that I think all fantasy fans will enjoy.

The character development in Mr. Feist's books is very good to sayt he least. As I said in my other reviews of the first three books (Magician: Apprentice, Magician: Master, and Silverthorn) these characters have flaws which make them seem more real. I can cite countless examples of characters from other books who are allpowerful and seldom get hurt much less have doubts and fears. Mr. Feist has the ability to take a scene, and witht he characters get the reader to feel the tension and suspense that so many authors try for but rarely reach. There are several characters through-out these four books that we are able to watch grow, only in this final book do we get a true appreciation for how much they have grown and what they will surely become.

The plot in this book is basically a carry over from Silverthorn in that the army amassing in the north is now about to move and they must be stopped, where are they goin and why is the crux of the book - yet this isn't revealed until the last 100 pages of the book which makes it a frantic race to save everyone. I mean frantic in a good way, not a bad way. The book is masterfully done. There are a couple good plots twists along the line, one is fairly obvious, but it detracts nothing from the book when the other characters realize it.

Now, on to my spoiler that I feel I need to talk about. If you don't want to read the spoiler skip to the next paragraph. I was very disappointed in one aspect of this book and that was the journey that Pug and Tomas undertook to find Marcos. I realize it had to be interesting, but I think it was over done. Going back to the creation of the universe and coming back, traveling between several world on the back of a dragon... I don't know, maybe it's just me but it lacked the 'right' feel for what needed to happen. I wish it would have been done another way.

Now, I always try to end my reviews with either recommending the book or not. In this case it's a resounding yes! If you are a fan of the fantasy genre I am almost positive that you will enjoy this book. However, make sure you read the first three books before reading this one or a lot of the things that happen won't make as much sense. A very good saga for the fantasy fan!

Captain Sisko and the Deep Space Nine crew must find a way to close down the wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant before all of the Federation is enslaved by the Dominion.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Too many characters for a novel.......2006-12-27

The Federation is locked into a brutal interstellar war with the Dominion, a group let by the Founders, a society of shape shifters. The Dominion is extremely well ordered with the founders at the peak, then the Vorta who fill the role of field commanders followed by the genetically engineered Jem Hadar soldiers. The sole purpose of the Jem Hadar is to fight and die for the founders. That is what they have been bred to do and that is all that they can possibly do. Control over the Jem Hadar is maintained by their dependence on Ketracel White, a combination narcotic and nutrient. At this time, the Cardassians are allied with the Dominion, and their combined power is more than the Federation can handle.
The Federation is in full retreat from the might of the Dominion/Cardassian forces. Although they were able to mine the wormhole so that no new Dominion forces can come through, the Federation was forced to abandon Deep Space Nine, destroying it as much as possible before leaving. At the urging of Cisco, the Bajorans signed a treaty to remain neutral in the conflict, an action that many Bajorans find difficult to accept.
Cisco leads his team in several actions against the Dominion, successfully destroying a major White processing station. However, they are damaged in their retreat and crash land on a planet, their ship sinking in an ocean. A Jem Hadar ship that was pursuing them also crashes on the planet and the two forces fight it out on the ground. The Federation party emerges victorious and is eventually rescued. The story closes with Cisco and his crew back in the fight and preparing to launch additional raids against the Dominion.
This novelization stays very close to the action of the TV series. That is both a positive and a negative. On the positive side, the struggle between the Federation and the Dominion is explained in great detail as the Federation forces continue to retreat. The negative side is that there are too many characters that are involved to keep a novel on track. Cisco's son Jake stays on Deep Space Nine as well as Quark, Odo and Kira. The action moves back and forth between the actions of Cisco and his crew and what is going on at Deep Space Nine. This bouncing back and forth can more easily be done in a visual medium where you have had time to flesh out the characters but is very difficult in print. If you have not seen these episodes of the television series, then you will it very difficult to follow. In my opinion, some of what occurred in the series should have been dropped from the novelization.

2 out of 5 stars Good story, bad writing........2004-08-18

This is not Diane Carey's worst effort, not by a long shot. Still, as is frequently the case in her writing, there are places where her word choice is, to put it charitably, questionable. It's never as bad here as it is in, say, "The Search", or some of her other earlier works, but it is still noticeable that she's trying too hard to be "clever and creative", and generally succeeding only in being distractingly odd. The story itself, being mostly an adaptation of several episodes of the "Deep Space Nine" television show from the time period of the "Dominion War" of the book's title, is good, and the changes that Ms. Carey has made are as often improvements as not, and generally don't seem to detract anything from what we saw onscreen. But as of the writing of this book, at least, she had yet to learn that being a "wordsmith" (which seems to be what she wants to think of herself as) does NOT involve playing such games with the language as to distract attention from the story she's telling.

4 out of 5 stars Would have read better had I not seen the show first........2003-12-25

Books 1 and 3 should really be part 1 of the Dominion War, and books 2 and 4, part 2 (or vice-versa) since there is no overlap between the two whatsoever. So it is ok to start reading book 2 having not read book 1. I believe had I not just watched DS9 on DVD that I would have enjoyed book 2 and 4 more than I did. The episodes were among my favorite, but reading it, much of which is taken word for word from the show, hardly offered new exciting twists. I agree you get a lot deeper insight into characters, especially Sisko and Martok's plan to do something about the War. At times I questioned whether Carey was right about some of the inner thoughts of Sisko and whether the producers of DS9 had the same views, or if Carey just invented them. Either way, it works. It's also good to see more of what happens when the Defiant goes off on a mission, esp. when Dax is in command. It was also good to see Charlie Reynolds and his crew. For that, I give this book 4 stars rather than 3, and also because I believe if one hasn't seen these episodes, that the books will be quite enjoyable. Seeing O'Brien on a suicide mission was quite funny, although the Tex character seemed very odd and out-of-place. Personally I prefered TNG books (1&3) more.

4 out of 5 stars From the small screen to print.......2003-08-08

Everyone say the book is always better then the movie. Diane Carey's novelization of these Deep Space Nine episodes holds to the same standards. We get to see into the minds of the characters and understand the choices they made on screen. We get to see specific outcomes of events never fully disclosed during the series.

There were a few new characters introduced but the development of the regular cast was great. Captain Sisko's development and the insight into his choices I felt were completely in character. General Martok showed new depth into his character but having read the two part series by J. Hertzler, am not sure of some of this character's actions.

Overall, a wonderful read and I enjoyed pushing through it quickly. As a four part series, I was hoping for some interaction and cross over with the first book. From what I have read so far, I see two, two-book series, rather then an interconnected four part I was hoping for.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Dominion War, maybe JR. ST........2003-05-18

This review is for the Dominion War (DW) 4 book set. I hoped that the people in charge of star trek could have written a series of books that gave us some of the grand sweep of the war in our galaxy that earth could have lost. THIS WAS NOT THAT SERIES. A better Title would have been SNIPPETS FROM THE DOMINION WAR (a lttle french military inuendo there) as we learn very little about the Dominion War.

Star fleet takes their greatest leader Picard (is kirk dead again?) and puts him in charge of a commando operation that has little chance of success in a tiny back water to a great war. We see virtually nothing of that war, only that the federation getting slaughtered. At least Picard knows to use two teams, instead on relying on only one team.

Of course it is not the publishers fault that I assumed they would fill in new information about the DW story with fuller richer detail. That would have been to much work. What was i expecting from a non-Shantner book.

SPOILER!!. At least they don't kill a popular character, which is why i gave 2 stars instead of 1.

I knew the plant from the beginning. Cone on. How many of you were shocked to learn who the saboteur was. A slow piece of junk defeats 3 enemies? Enterprise shows up right on time WAY behind the lines of the most guarded thing the dominion has?

This series would have better placed a Junior Star War series, featuring Picards, Rikers Troys geordis and datas children.

      Book Description

Life's trials and triumphs can seem accidental. One person may feel that life is a constant struggle in which pitfalls abound and someone seems out to get him. Another may feel that every day is a gift from God with special blessings just for her. That's because forces are at work in our lives: the blessings of a loving God or the curses of our spiritual adversary. This hugely popular classic work of Derek Prince helps readers recognize if there are curses at work in their lives and shows them how to get out from under those curses to live under God's blessings. This third edition of Blessing or Curse includes an extensive new study guide for small group or individual use.

Derek Prince again doesn't disappoint those of us who have come to expect from him solid theology and understandable exposition of Scriptural principles.
Again, in this vitally important volume, Mr. Prince continues his divine assignment to bring each and every faithful Christian the opportunity to live in the freedom that Jesus Christ intended for them and for which He gave His life.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Derik Prince.......2007-08-05

Derik Prince is becoming one of my favorite authors. What a privilege to have this great Man of God teaching us the things he learned over a lifetime of serving the Lord. This is a great book. It reminded me once again who my real enemy is. I have greatly benefited from reading Blessing or Curse.

5 out of 5 stars Blessing or Curse,: You Can Choose.......2007-07-28

A definite must for those seeking answers to "dead end" prayers. Prince, presents a sound and Biblical
truth of: cause and effect regarding one's spiritual past, present and future. Not for the faint hearted or those seeking a quick fix; a serious answer for serious seekers.

5 out of 5 stars Watching My Tongue.......2007-03-03

Excellent Book. I learned so much about the power of the tongue and how our words can curse others or even ourself.

Throughout the Bible, there are many examples of people whose lives were blessed because of their parents' or grandparents' obedience to God's principles. In his series, "PASS ON A POSITIVE CHANGE," Pastor Joel Osteen encourages you that even if you were the recipient of a bad legacy - divorce, poverty, alcoholism, addiction, abuse - you can pass on something different to your children and grandchildren. You can be free! You can be the one who changes the course of history for your children and for future generations of your family. Pastor Joel shows you how in this enlightening set of four messages that includes: Impacting Future Generations Breaking Free from the Strongholds of the Past Developing Good Habits Receiving God's Mercy Decide right now that you are going to take a stand for God and commit to being a person of excellence. Do it for your children. Do it for your family. Do it for the generations to come.
