A raw, edgy story filled with great characters, powerful emotions, and very thoughtfully written. The kind of book you keep thinking about long after you put it down.

Book Description
Discover the magic of The Malloreon–David Eddings’s acclaimed series, the sequel to his bestselling The Belgariad. Now the first three Malloreon books appear in a single volume, taking us on an epic quest across strange lands among gods, kings, sorcerers, and ordinary men. It is a gripping tale of two ancient warring destinies fighting a battle of good against evil.
Garion has slain the evil God Torak and is now the King of Riva. The prophecy has been fulfilled–or so it seems. For there is a dire warning, as a great evil brews in the East. Now Garion once again finds himself with the fate of the world resting on his shoulders. When Garion’s infant son is kidnapped by Zandramas, the Child of Dark, a great quest begins to rescue the child. Among those on the dangerous mission are Garion and his wife, Queen Ce’Nedra, and the immortal Belgarath the Sorcerer and his daughter, Polgara. They must make their way through the foul swamps of Nyissa, then into the lands of the Murgos. Along the way, they will face grave dangers–captivity, a horde of demons, a fatal plague–while Zandramas plots to use Garion’s son in a chilling ritual that will make the Dark Prophecy supreme. . .

Relax and enjoy it........2007-09-25
Eddings writes mindless drivel, but it is ENTERTAINING mindless drivel - great for telling the world to go soak its head and just sitting back and having a good time.
My most cherised series.......2007-07-26
Along with The Belgariad, the Malloreaon is probably my most beloved series of fantasy. I read all the books in the series over 10 years ago & to this day when I just need to escape, I find myself in this world. What David Eddings has crafted is every bit as beautiful as the Tolkien world, as magical as Harry Potter, and as rich as Anne Rice's history in the Vampire Chronicles. The characters are faceted & complex, the story line flows easily & I feel that I am a lucky reader to have found such a magical world!
Amazing.......2007-05-20
I've read alot of fantasy books from all kinds of authors. High fantasy and Epics and light fantasy. Usually in a series, the first 3 books are the best and if there are any after that they decline. I started out reading the Belgaraid knowing that this series was "light fantasy" and I didn't expect anything more than that. Then I get to the Mallorean and not only did it surprised me but it was actually better than the Belgaraid. Even the 3rd book in the Mallorean was better than the first. It seems that the author got better as he wrote and had a story to tell instead of stretching out a shorter story just to sell more books.
A wonderful series to read and reread.......2007-04-29
I first picked up Guardians of the West in the Library while I waited for my three children to finish their homework assignments. I couldn't put it down. Then I discovered there were five previous books. I immediately went and checked out Eddings first book The Pawn Of Prophecy and I was hooked. I was especially intrigued by their world and the numerous societies they developed to fill it. The background story was always intriguing. As Tolkin said about Bilbo's home, `There was always something more to discover'.
The landscape is rich in detail and their characters are warm and real. I enjoyed the surprises David and Leigh build into their stories. I was especially entertained by twist that the Murgo King and Silk were half brothers. While I love all the characters, I was fascinated by Polgara. I loved Beldin's character as a foil to Belgarath. I was surprised, happy, and saddened by his departure at the series finale. I have all the books in my collection and I have reread them many times. I go there to escape or find inspiration. This is truly one of the great works of fiction by a truly distinguished writing team.
One of the best Fantasy series since Tolkein!.......2007-03-31
In most cases, it seems, sequels tend to lose the punch and energy found in the origanal series. This is far from the truth when it comes to The Mallorean, by David Eddings. In his first series,The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit andThe Belgariad, Vol. 2 (Books 4 & 5): Castle of Wizardry, Enchanters' End Game Eddings spins a tale of good and evil that is worthy of J.R.R. Tolkein, without being a slavish copy of the masterwork of Fantasy fiction.
In The Mallorean, Eddings successfully creats a new story, resurecting most of the old characters. He creates a story that shows that even though everything seemed to come to a successfull conclusion, fate often needs to go full circle. His characters are immensely believable; the reluctant king of an island kingdom, Belgarion, who also is one of the world's most powerful wizards, to his Queen, headstrong and with a short-fused temper. Add in the Emperor of the largest land, who must forge a reluctant reliance with Belgarion to save his people, and the young child destined to take his place as the newest god. The story is wonderfully crafted to carry this tale. Add in the final bookThe Malloreon, Vol. 2 (Books 4 & 5): Sorceress of Darshiva, The Seeress of Kell to tie all the ends together and you have the perfect series in the world of Fantasy literature.
Every year or so, regardless of where I am in my reading list, I make the time to reread The Lord Of The Rings by Tolkein, Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorian, and the works of Raymond FeistMagician: Apprentice (Riftwar Saga), et al. These are, in my opinion, the benchmarks of all Fantasy. If you haven't read Eddings yet, do so at your earliest oppurtunity. You won't be dissappointed.

Homefall a trip not to remember.......2002-12-12
I really liked the series of the last legion but I have to agree with my peers. This book wasnt the best of the series. If you think to much about the story or the plot you wont be happy with the book. The ending is terrible...It was like Chris had to hurry up and end the book because his dead line was up or something. Read it lightly...but you should read it just so you have idea what happened to the Confederation (if you havent figured it out anyhow) and why none of the ships returned that set off for the Cumbre system.
Lets get a little realism in here shall we?.......2002-05-23
Having bought and read all four of the Lost Legion books, I think I'd like to apply for a refund. These books, especially this last one, are simply a warmed over mishmash of plots and escapades stolen right out of Cole's and Bunch's Sten books. In fact, once or twice, I almost expected to see Sten and whats-his-face and the rest of the Mantis crunchies pop up to topple a government or three, blow up a battleship or six and outsmart every government official and hostile intelligence officer in the galaxy WITHOUT working up a sweat! I especially like the way our two heroes manage to talk their hardbitten, tough as nails, regular officer commanding general in to authorizing this ridiculous "circus" recce mission in about half an hour. The middle of this book is the toppling govts, etc, as they try to find out what happened to the Confederation and the conclusion is a ridicuolous all-out firefight as the Circus (elephants, tigers, horses, midgets, clowns and all) fights its way through a huge bloodthirsty mob--killing about 5,000 people while taking about 10 casualties of their own--to their spaceship and takes off for home and safety. Oh yes, on their way, they blow up another gigantic battleship and a few patrol-craft and blow away a few hundred (thousand?) more morons blocking their path.
This book is the weakest of a weak series by the author. I suggest you save your money. If you want to, pick it up (cheap)at a used book store as its not the worst thing out there. The first two books aren't too bad though if you can find them used. Pick them up for a lazy day at the beach.
I would suggest sticking to the first three or four of the Sten books if you want to read about govts overthrown, battleships blown up, and all sorts of other nasty special ops stuff that is somewhat more plausibly done than this book.
Another enjoyable book in the series.......2001-09-08
A very good read, nothing very deep or thought provoking, but a very enjoyable book. Fans of The Honor series by David Weber or the Starfist series by David Sherman should enjoy. Again, not a deep book, but very enjoyable and quite funny at times (but only when it is intentional)
Instead of Golden Fleece; slimy sack of sheep shearings.......2001-08-29
The quest for the Confederation begins. The vehicle is a recon done by circus. What could be more unthreatening than a circus? Like any quest tale, our heroes encounter travails and setbacks. A breakaway segment that purports to be the Confederation, a system where they are ignoring the fact that the Confederation has fallen, a government that has spawned an ultimate machine politics, and on and on. Each stop is more bewildering than the last. This is Bunch's best book so far. The Sten books were good, but this is the best of his series and his work so far. Bunch still needs to work on the depth of his characters. I mean, too many of his characters are very thin and their motivation is not really explained. You want a good read that makes the time fly, this is IT. Homefall delivers the action without insulting your intelligence. The ending is believable, though not welcome. Watch this series. Cumbre is looks to be a Byzantine Empire in the making. After the fall of Rome, civilization in Europe shifted to Constantinople. So it seems with this series.
Homefall by Chris Bunch.......2001-08-28
If you liked the first three books in this series you will like this one.Moves along at a good pace, continues to develop the main characters, and adds just enough new characters to keep everything interesting.Well worth the money!

History behind hymn writers........2007-09-01
A 2007 summer reading list mini review.
It is well with my soul seems like it is going to be like many other books out there dedicated tothe stories behind great hymns. In reality, however, Rachael Phillips book is conerned more about the great lives behind the great works. She paints portraits of Spafford, Bliss, Cowper and Havergal that expose their strengths but also give even coverage of the difficulties they each faced.
This is a great book!.......2007-03-28
I never really knew much about the great hymn writers of old, so I bought this book. The stories in this book are both informative and very interesting too. I could hardly put it down.
Great reading for the entire family!.......2006-11-02
Barbour Publishing's "Heroes of the Faith" series found an able storyteller in Rachael Phillips, a Christian writer and humorist whose talents as a researcher and biographer are clearly on display in the book, Well with My Soul. This work, suitable for preteens on up, gives vivid life-portraits of four of Christendom's most colorful and prolific hymn writers.
Phillips, as she did so well with her "Heroes" treatments of Billy Sunday, Frederick Douglass and Saint Augustine, once again weaves historical and personal details together to give us very human characters. Horatio Spafford, whose intrepid efforts for Christ and His church during the era of D.L. Moody and the Great Chicago Fire, suffered the dark tragedy of losing four young daughters during their Atlantic crossing with his wife in the Ville du Havre disaster of 1873. Phillips delves into the wells of Spafford's emotions as he wrestled with this and other spiritual challenges that resulted in such important hymn poems as "It Is Well with My Soul."
I think it laudable that this biographer doesn't shrink from mentioning such unfortunate and unflattering details as the petty and uncharitable treatment Spafford and others received from fellow churchmen, as well as Spafford's own idiosyncrasies which surfaced later in his life. But the inclusion of such blemishes is always seasoned by Phillips' compassion and charm with which she sums up her subjects' true greatness, namely their faith in a God of unfailing grace and providence.
Other stories in this very readable volume tell about Phillip P. Bliss ("Hallelujah! What a Savior"), William Cowper ("God Moves in a Mysterious Way") and Frances Ridley Havergal ("Take My Life and Let It Be"). This book would be wonderful as supplemental reading during family times, and both educational and joyful material for hymn lovers everywhere.
Sincerely,
Mark N. Aikins

Stunning Work of Art.......2000-12-06
I keep the book on a music stand in my office and when my students come in they are immediately drawn to it. This book is an absolutely stunning work of art. Each hymn is preceded by a story that makes you appreciate and love each hymn even more. The photographs chosen for each hymn are breath taking. If you've ever sung hymns without paying any attention to the words or their meaning I think you would find this book inspiring. It brings music to life in a way I have never seen.
Book Description
Sightless for life, this brave girl's soul was destined to electrify generations to come as she became the great hymn writer.
Customer Reviews:
This book repeats itself repeats itself.......2004-03-15
I don't really have many complaints about this book, that is if you are just wanting to know a bunch of facts and information about Fanny Crosby. The complaints I do have is that this book loves to repeat itself and it also likes to put in meaningless or random quotes and thoughts. When I first began to read this book I thought that it was going to inspire me or make me have a new appreciation for Hymn writers, but in fact it has made me think of them as pretty boring. I really wish that this book wasn't so boring and drawn out because I was looking forward to reading it, but then once I got started I realized how much I couldn't wait for it to be over.
A Lost Saint: Fanny J. Crosby.......2003-11-02
Fanny Jane Crosby (1820-1915), needs no introduction to most people as far as her hymnwriting is concerned. Her best hymns, "Blessed Assurance," "To God Be the Glory," "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross," "I Am Thine, O Lord," "He Hideth My Soul," and many others, are among the greatest gospel songs ever written, and have a place in the "memory banks" of most people raised in any sort of church environment. However, the greatness of some of her lyrics has obscured the equally extraordinary life of a woman who, for many of her almost 95 years on this planet, was known as the "Methodist Saint." Ruffin's contribution to the "Heroes of the Faith" series does much, but not enough, to bring the amazing life of this lost saint to the attention of a modern audience. Blind from the age of six weeks as a result of gross medical malpractice, fatherless from the age of ten months, and trapped in an unhappy marriage for much of her adult life, "Aunt Fanny" nevertheless rose above afflictions which would have incapacitated many people to give the world some of its most inspiring songs of the Christian faith. In this day when many modern religious lyricists have grown wealthy from their works, it is an astounding revelation to know that Crosby wrote most of her hymns for a few dollars each, and never retained the rights to any of them. Not only that, until she became too old to care for herself, Fanny lived in the Bowery, which was then, as now, one of the worst sections of New York City, and daily spent her time and the little money she had giving aid to some of the most needy segments of her day's society. This book fills a needed gap by giving us a great deal of inspirational material concerning Crosby's ministerial activities (among other things, she became one of the few popular female evangelists of her day), but more should be done to relate the life of this amazing, yet little-known, woman to the songs she wrote that have inspired countless Christians for over a century. A more complete listing of all her important hymns would also be helpful. Nevertheless, this is certainly the best book on Crosby in print today, and I would sincerely recommend it to anyone who wishes to rediscover the wonderful life of this lost saint.
Inspirational Account of Blind Hymnwriter.......2002-09-02
Not long after her birth in 1820, Fanny Crosby was blinded by the improper treatment of an eye infection by a supposed doctor. Yet despite the distress this caused her family, little did they suspect the paths which this disability would lead their remarkable child down. Fanny Crosby would surpass her obstacle of blindness and become a prolific poet and a compassionate servant of the Gospel of Jesus. From her early schooling in a newly established school for the blind she amazed people all around her with her surprising knack for writing poems, earning her fame and the nickname "The Blind Poetess."
A devout Christian throughout her life, she eventually put her poetic talent toward hymn writing. Throughout her life she composed over 9,000 hymns, although as the author points out, due to this massive output, many of the lyrics were of lower quality and sentimental. Nonetheless, many of her better hymns were very popular in the churches of that day, and reportedly many of them led to the conversions of people who were touched by their message. I would have enjoyed it if the author had included more of the hymn lyrics in the book, as I am unfamiliar with most of the hymns mentioned. Of the ones included some did seem a little "fluffy" and overly sentimental, yet she still had a great impact on many people both through her hymn-writing and her caring and generous behavior. Altogether it was a pretty interesting look into the life of a Christian woman who overcame her physical limitations to be a shining witness of the Gospel.
Great Resource On Hymn Writer Aunt Fanny Crosby.......1998-08-15
In the work the author takes the reader through the life of Aunt Fanny. He talks about the Puritan town she grew up in, and her first poem at 8 when she talks about the blessing of being blind. The Author gives great background into the many people that shaped her life, and the lifes that she touched. It is amazing to know that the author found her 204 pen names, and many of her 9,000 hymns. A great work about the Amazing Faith of a Sweet Little Woman. I suggest this as reading for any Christian, Musician, Poet or Teacher.
