good book, good times.......2004-06-28
I can say that I'm not much of a reader as far as Native American literature goes, but I must admit that Seals did an excellent job in turning my views around. This story hilariously depicts the voyage of two Native Americans as they go on a a modern-day quest for glory and to save their heritage. Along the way Seals also gives a clear depiction of the daily lives of those remaining in their squalid soverign nation, as well as those Native Americans who choose to shed their ancestral dress and join American culture and the internal changes that occur. This story has exciting twists and turns and unexpected heros. It truly gives one a sense of what true spirituality and individuality means.
An American Classic.......2004-02-28
The previous review from the reader in Kansas obviously has very limited experience with the Native American community. Their criticism of the language in "Pow Wow Highway" reveals their own stereotypical and romanticized notions and expectations of the modern American Indian community. This reviewer and his supposed PhD candidate compatriots have completely missed the book's most valuable accomplishment: it tells the truth.
David Seal's masterpiece is a modern American classic. The language in the book is nothing if not accurate. Every Native person I know who has read this fantastic book instantly identifies with the characters, and can point to friends and family members who seem taken straight from the pages. We require our children to read it as soon as they seem old enough to comprehend it. We discuss it at length over and over again, usually over coffee and cigarettes. The humor that pervades the work is so dead-right-on it caputres the essence of Native humor in unique ways that have since been oft imitated in many other works.
This book is a must read by anyone interested in American literature, let alone in Native American literature. If only it was back in publication - along with the other equally powerful books by David Seals. The world is a much poorer place without these works of art made widely available.
SHOWS INDIANS IN THE WORST POSSIBLE LIGHT.......2003-07-30
Powwow Highway is an enlightening work by David Seals which illustrates much about Indian history and current culture. The sidenotes and geography discussed is accurate. However, much of the verbage is of low quality or, in other words, unnecessarily profane. While a literary argument can be made for reflecting vernacular in common use, the author's over-indulgence in using profanity to describe the color of the car is quite unnecessary. An even worse problem is the author's method which paints American Indians in the worse possible light. As one of my PhD. program fellow students stated, it makes one think that Indians are worthless individuals and deserving of the common stereotypes. Potential readers and buyers would be well advised to opt instead for more truthful or better written books which do not emphasize the worst examples of American Indian culture.
What fun!.......2001-07-22
This book is a pleasant surprise, a peek into the heart of a culture that does not see things the way we city-dwellers do. Much can be learned from this book, things that won't be found in any Sociology texts. Whats more, it is just a fun, funny little book. I wish I could think of my car as a pony....
bigtime humor , with an adventure that is 2 wild, never mild.......1999-08-31
Do anything you can to find a copy of this book. This book is apparently a target of censoship and will not be easy to locate. If you have ever lived in eastern Wyoming or western South Dakota, you will probably appreciate the humor, the sadness, and the deep wisdom of the lives of modern day Lakota Sioux. This book is hysterically funny, and I laughed out loud so many times I lost count. David Seals paints a wild tale, and I only hope he can find a way to publish more of his work. Censorship is an ugly thing.....

Robert Jordan's bestselling Wheel of Time epic is one of the most popular fantasy series of all time for a reason. Jordan's world is rich and complex, and he's assembled an endearing, involving core of characters while mapping out an ambitious and engaging story arc.
But with the previous book, Crown of Swords, and now with Path of Daggers, the series is in a bit of a holding pattern. Path continues the halting gait of the current plot line: Rand is still on the brink of losing it, all the while juggling the political machinations around him and again taking to the field against the Seanchan. The rest of the Two Rivers kids and company don't seem to be moving much faster. Egwene continues to slowly consolidate her hold as the "true" Amyrlin (finally getting closer to Tar Valon and the inevitable confrontation with Elaida), and Nynaeve and Elayne keep on wandering toward the Lion Throne, again on the run from the Seanchan. Mat Cauthon is barely mentioned, and fellow ta'veren Perrin keeps busy with politics in Ghealdan. The ending does provide promise, though, that book nine might match the pace and passion of the previous books.
If you're already hooked, you could sooner overcome a weave of Compulsion than avoid picking up a copy of Path of Daggers. But if you're new to the series, start at the beginning with the engrossing, much-better-paced Eye of the World. --Paul Hughes

Sexy stuff.......2007-10-09
This book was on par with the other books. Look, in a story as long and complex as this one, it would get pretty predictable if every book ended with a huge battle with Rand gaining another victory. This book shows progression in undercurrents, the very important undercurrents, and it's ENTERTAINING. Yes, this book is NOT boring, things ARE happening.
I guess if I had been waiting for 2 years for the next great thing, then it would have been disappointing, but this book is necessary and it's definitely worth reading. The absence of Mat's storyline is obviously because he had so much other stuff to deal with, and obviously chose to do tackle that in the next book.
Well, I haven't read the next book yet but I'm sure it'll parallel this book a bit. Jordan is simply too detailed to progress everything in one volume. That's my theory and I'm stick'n to it... for now.
You know, there should be a separate rating for stories that take more one book, a cumulative rating. Or maybe show an average rating taken from the individual book ratings. Because there isn't, I give this 5 stars because I think as far as this book within the context of the story, the story is still worth 5 stars. If this book had to be taken as a complete book, I'd be like omfg this is the worst book ever, so you really should consider that it is a part of a whole... and so far the whole is still rock'n. And yes, it will be whole, have faith that the final book will be published and that RJ's dying work will have been worth the wait! Ok, on to book 9...
Oh yeah, sexy stuff... umm, as usual there is some sex insinuated, but if you want some good sex scenes in this type of work, you'll need to read "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R. R. Martin... yowza. Also, a lot fewer, if any, "had had" can be found with GRRM. I was just filling in time for GRRM's next book when I started WoT. Anyway, WoT is good, ASOIAF is very good, so far. But you never know, ASOIAF may take a nose dive, but I doubt it, seems pretty well thought out, massive but organized, and detailed but not superfluously so. Ya know? If not, go find out, it rocks!
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The chicks are doing the more interesting thing here, using the ter'angreal to do their own version of a weather control machine, or at least a weather fixing machine.
Rand is involved in yet another large armed conflict, and gets a bit crazy, which ain't good if you were a soldier there, on either side.
Easily the worst of these books so far, and a lot of pointlessness.
The Path of Daggers: Book 8 of the Wheel of Time.......2007-06-11
I've loved every book in this series by Robert Jordan! Interesting characters, interesting land, interesting action.
Another well-written book that goes nowhere.......2007-06-08
I can understand the frustration and the cynicism underlying many of the reviews of this book. I share most of them myself. Robert Jordan has created an immense (!) world and so many characters it's impossible to keep track of them all. Thank goodness for the chapter-by-chapter summaries supplied by the writers of the Wikipedia entries, or I'd be hopelessly lost most of the time. However, there is a lot of good writing in this book - the characters are far less irritating than in previous outings, and their interactions are far more interesting. Unfortunately, in terms of plot, this book goes absolutely nowhere.
It reminds me of Book 6 (Lord of Chaos), previously my least favourite book in the series. I get the feeling from reading this book that Jordan is using the book to set up the next one - there are tons of things that are moving forward, and everyone always seems to be "on the verge" of doing something, but then he jumps to another storyline. Thus: Rand has defeated the forsaken Sammael and has conquered Illian. He now turns his sights on the Seanchan, who have invaded several southwestern nations. Egwene solidifies her position as leader of the rebel Aes Sedai and heads to attack Tar Valon. Elaine finally (!) arrives in Andor to stake her claim to the throne of that country. Perrin goes after The Prophet for Rand. Unfortuantely, not a single one of these stories is brought to a conclusion. However, the most annoying part of it all is the continued splintering of groups to such a huge degree that it's impossible to keep track of them all! For example, there are now the following groups of Aes Sedai: Those left in Tar Valon loyal to Elaida, those in Tar Valon working for the rebels, the rebels with Egwene, the rebels with Nynaeve and Elaine, the expelled Aes Sedai "knitting circle" (also with Nynaeve), the kidnappers Rand captured, the rebel emmisaries with Rand, the independent Aes Sedai with Rand, those with Perrin, those that belong to the Black Ajah, etc. That's not even counting the various groups of Windfinders and Wise Ones who can also channel. No wonder nothing happens - if Jordan were to spend just 5 pages on each of the groups he's created, the book would probably be 1000 pages long.
The frustration is perfectly exemplified by the Prologue in this book, in which he introduces YET ANOTHER army/group, marching toward Rand's territories. He spends 10 pages on them in the prologue and then they are never heard from again in the rest of the book! ARGH!
All these complaints notwithstanding, the book actually reads quite well, and is not as confusing as some would lead you to believe. It's just unfortunate that Jordan appears dedicated to milking this series for all it's worth, knowing we poor suckers will keep buying the books. After all - if you're reading this review, you've probably already decided to read the book, right? As Homer Simpson says, "How can you go this far and not go farther?"
Tired of..........2006-10-28
This series (up to book 4/5) was one of my favorites. There were little things that bugged me, but I considered it to be a masterpiece.
A coupld of things have caused me to completely give up on this series after this book.
* Detail is great and all, but please make something happen. There are very few books that I haven't finished, but I was close with this one due to the lack of real events furthuring the story.
* ENOUGH with the 'Men are stupid, tug on my braids' mentality! RJ likes to infuse his charecters with the inability to understand the opposite gender. When will they learn what most mature adults learn? If I didn't know better I'd say that RJ is a feminist man-hater.
I could overlook these annoyances when the rest of the story was fantastic, but that just isn't the case with this book.

Wheel of Time, that's enough for me........2000-11-13
Really, as long as it continues the Wheel of Time story, most fans would be pleased (at least for a short while). The story -does- have its shortcomings, but perhaps the following books would serve to improve the quality of Path of Daggers somehow.
As for the limited edition, firstly it's bound in green leather and comes in a matching slipcase, secondly it's limited edition (around 100-200 copies), thirdly it has Robert Jordan's signature in ink somewhere there.
If you've got money, what the heck are you waiting for?
Great Series, weak Book 8.......2000-06-27
Pub:"Mr Jordan POD is great, but we have to milk the public for all its worth...so why don't we break this book into 2 parts...POD short version and then in Nov' we can release the 2nd part "Winters Heart". Each previous book had an "episode" quality. Meaning there was some conclusion while keeping the series alive. I got the impression POD was severely chopped up by the editor. Examples: Just when Egwene's Rebels are about to launch an attack.. cut ! Perins wife gets in trouble, he's on his way to rescue her...cut ! No mention of Matt (Is he dead or alive ?), er sorry Robert take that out, we can bring him in part deux "Winters Heart". This is the first time in the series I've seen such shoddy work. Maybe Jordan is struggling to continue series, maybe the publishers know the series is coming to a close...maybe thats why their stretching it. For the record, I'd did buy this book and and will continue buying them. Like I said great series !
Another excellent addition to Jordan's series.......2000-04-18
I do not have the limited edition, but have read the Path ofDaggers, and if you have read any of Jordan's previous books in thisseries, you will like this. If you haven't read the series, you should. He has the best character development I have seen, and It is full of clues you will miss during the first reading, but each subsequent time you read the book, you will catch a few more hidden clues as to how the series will end. As far as the limited edition, I asked Amazon.com, and they told me it is A. Limited, and B. Comes with a leather cover. That is what makes it so much more expensive than the others.
It's Wheel of Time, and it rocks almost as hard as the rest!.......1999-12-30
Book eight... Many negative reviews were written when this book came out. Truth is that there are not many die-hard action-events in this book. Truth is too, that some of the topics are considered not vrey interesting by some readers. It's still a fact though, that the online WoT-community is heavily alive, and that Robert Jordan still is really, really popular. What I'm saying is, that there are lots of people who liked book eight (like I do), but have never said that aloud, because there is no need to. People who judge books for money have to state an opinion, and if you're not into the series, I guess "Path of Daggers" is as interesting as you average book about fishing. Most of the fans like the book, other people don't. If you came to this pages, you most probably are a fan, so go buy! (I am very sorry for both grammatical and linguistical errors in this text. I'm not a native speaker)
Jordan streches our Imaginations and his Purse.......1999-12-22
I am a great fan of the Wheel of Time series, but Path of Daggers is without a doubt the slowest and possibly the worst book in the series so far. It dodders, stumbles and falls flat on its face mainly because about two incidents of any note take place in this story. The rest of the book seems to be just rubbish where nothing of any import is happening to fill up gaps. I think this was the reason the book seemed so laborious and slow-going. The story-line gave a feeling of being artificially stretched and the style of writting seemed different too. It was bleaker and there was a distinct lack of humor unlike in the rest of the series. I must admit the ending was rather promising but apart from that it seems Jordan is streching the story for the sake of streching it now.

An Enduring Classic.......2004-03-15
Although I am an avid reader, and have an ever-growing collection of books, I rarely read anything more than once. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series is definitely an exception, since I have read every book numerous times over the years. I recommend this series to people of all ages, since I still get as much enjoyment out of it now as I did the first time I picked up the first book about 12 years ago, when I was a sophmore in high school. Even people who aren't big science fiction buffs will get a kick out of the hilarious escapades of Arthur Dent, and his unique assortment of companions. This series is definitely a must read for everyone!
One of the few books that make me laugh out loud!.......2001-10-27
If everone could see the world as Douglas Adams did, we'd all be better off. Mix dry British humor with a group of idiosyncratic characters, drop them into the space-time continium and you get non-stop laughs. At times I often found myself with a grin from ear to ear! Sometimes laughing out-loud!! Even a die hard science fiction fan needs a little bit of humor to keep a perspective.
Life, The Universe, and HILARITY.......2001-10-22
This collection of sharp, witty, and observant books merits a space on every bookshelf. I am VERY disappointed to find that it
is out of print, as the copy I have is a beautiful black cushioned-leather covered, bible-page style with gold page edges.
Needless to say, I'm preserving it as much as I can! Douglas Adams is one of my favorite authors, with his ability to make
human existance seem so amusing, and yet so futile at the same time. He takes life, gives it a large drink, spins it around a few
times, and watches what happens. Adams is not above self-humiliation either:
"The idea for the title first cropped up when I was lying drunk in a field in Innsbruck, Austria. Well, not really drunk, just the
kind of drunk you get from having a couple of stiff Gossers after not having eaten for two days straight on account of being a
penniless hitchhiker. We are talking of a mild inability to stand up."
I THOROUGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE with a sense of humor, a mind for Sci-Fi, or an adequately functioning
brain. Actually, all carbon-based life-forms should be exposed to this book at some point or another...
Enjoy... I know I did!

This series of books, called a Trillogy, is the most hilarious I've ever read. From the (mis-)adventures of Arthur Dent, to the wild lifestyle of Zaphod Beeblebrox. I especially loved the touch of the history of the series at the begining.

Customer Reviews:
Good for the basics, but..........2005-11-17
I can't see dropping almost $20 for this book, for the size I think it should be more like $7 to $10 at the very max. It does tend to get wordy and confusing. I like it for learning the basics of the Sabbats/Esbats and, hey the pictures are pretty! ;)I've had this book for close to 10 years and still pull it out as a refresher, which it is very good for. Alas, I can't suggest a better book w/a more "biased" (read: less Celtic) approach, which is why I do recommend it for it's basic content.
Unnecessarily complicated..........2004-05-23
There is much to recommend this book to a new person. Even one that's been around awhile will find new ideas here. If one is interested in a book with a Celtic bent, this is a fine book.
However, the shear amounts of ingredients for oils, incenses, etc, is unnecessary for a successful ritual. A new person trying to follow all the recipes might go mad trying to collect everything. I guess I come from the "Less is more" school of Wicca...
another great book by a great witch.......2003-06-21
Laurie Cabot is an wonderful person, remarkable witch and, as she has proven here again, an excellent writer. Her style is clear, with interesting history, stories, insights and humor.
I'd like to see more illustrations, for the benefit of those who may not have much background in the sciences, but frankly, Laurie's writing conjures up the imagination, too.
For those who wish to ground their knowledge and experience of Witchcraft through scientific understanding as well, then each of her books are a must.
Solitary Rituals.......2002-02-09
It was all around a very good book. I just didn't like the fact that it had rituals for groups but none for the solitary practitioner. I think this book gave a very good understanding on the different types of holidays that are celebrated. I have started Paganism about 5 months ago and I had bought this book because I wanted to know more about the holidays. I think it is a very good book for both people interested in Paganism and for people who have been in Paganism a long time.
An Unpretentious and Simple Look at The Wheel of The Year.......2002-02-06
I have not read any other of Laurie Cabot's books, and probably never will, but that is not because I did not enjoy this one. For a newcomer to the traditions and meanings within the pagan wheel of the year, this book was a good starter in experiencing those festivals and holidays. This book is a perfect companion and lays a good spiritual foundation for enjoying and exploring the ancient world of the Celts and paganism in general. A bit more depth on the historical background of each festival would have made the book that much better, but that is not really its purpose, and I find myself returning to this slim volume again and again as my understanding grows, enjoying it more each time. The language is simple and straightforward, and the writer seldom stumbles, taking the reader flowing through the days of the year to return to where it all began.
