    Book Description

These two modern classics by the great Japanese novelist Junichiro Tanizaki, both utilize the diary form to explore the authority that love and sex have over all.

In The Key, a middle-aged professor plies his wife of thirty years with any number of stimulants, from brandy to a handsome young lover, in order to reach new heights of pleasure. Their alternating diaries record their separate adventures, but whether for themselvess or each other becomes the question. Diary of a Mad Old Man records, with alternating humor and sadness, seventy-seven-year-old Utsugi’s discovery that even his stroke-ravaged body still contains a raging libido, especially in the unwitting presence of his chic, mysterious daughter-in-law.

5 out of 5 stars tremendous romantic fantasy .......2005-05-04

In Viago, her father the Duke informs Gillian Cree that she will marry her family enemy, the lecherous vile Rolf de Viennes to pay a debt. Though her sire demands that honor is served by the marriage, her brother Nick vows to take her to safety to Boreas, but the snowstorm stops their escape. The siblings find refuge in a bleak manor house in the middle of nowhere.

The dismal home belongs to Prince Kaelan Hesar, who fell in love only to have his Jarl disapprove his choice, incarcerate him and ultimately sold him in marriage. Since his spouse died, Kaelan lives as a recluse caring for no one not even himself. Ironically the woman he loved that started his cycle of doom has now sought shelter in his home. Gillian brings Kaelan back to life and though he is not to even see her, this time he refuses to let her go. They visit a priest who marries Gillian and Kaelan, but though they hope for a long and happy relationship together, their respective families and de Viennes have darker plans for the loving duo.

WINDFALL is a tremendous romantic fantasy that emphasizes the relationships and attributes of the key cast members. Readers will appreciate the second chance at love between the lead couple and the unselfish attitude of Nick, which contrasts nicely with his avaricious father, the depraved Rolf, and Kaelan's power greedy Jarl. The audience will enjoy this tale with newcomers wanting to read more "Wind" tales from an author that us fans know is one of the best writers of dark heated romantic fantasy.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless Tales 4 stars review.......2003-08-07

    by Angela Black

Lady Gillian Cree--or Gilly as she is called--does not want to marry the cruel and sadistic Rolf de Viennes whom her parents have chosen for her. With the help of her older brother Lord Nicholas Cree (Nick) she runs away from home. But the weather is bitter cold and they find themselves in the midst of a snowstorm and seeking shelter. They find what appears to be an abandoned house and break in to take shelter. What they discover inside surprises them.

Inside the house Gilly and Nick find an unconscious man who is near death. They discover that he is someone they know. They nurse him back to health and he tells them about the lies of the past that separated him from his one true love-Gilly.

Widowed Prince Kaelan Hesar has been in seclusion for five years in the house known as Holy Dale. Shortly before his self-imposed withdrawal from the world, his wife died tragically in the house. He has been suspected of killing her. For this reason, he is hated by the local people, who have nicknamed the house Unholy Dale. Once Kaelan's health improves, he leaves the house with Gilly and Nick and sets out on an adventure to right the wrongs done to them. However, they don't realize that their troubles are about to begin all over again.

Charlotte Boyett-Compo has developed an alternate world with three-dimensional characters that are entrenched in political intrigue. The story is masterfully told through the eyes of Kaelan as he alternates between past and present to explain what led to his separation from Gilly. There is some graphic violence and sex but it's not gratuitous. This story is a prequel to the Keeper of the Wind series.

Be warned, there are a few scenes that some may find disturbing-I did. In several flashbacks Nick and Gilly are involved in sexual encounters: she is only 14 and he's 21 years old. A few years later, while she is still not of age, he fondles and attempts to have sex with her. While this may be acceptable to some readers, this reviewer found it disturbing, especially given current news headlines about men taking advantage of young girls.

    5 out of 5 stars Windfall.......2000-06-17

Gillian Cree was devastated when her father betrothed her to the lecherous Rolf de Viennes. Despite her protests her father was adamant - the King advocated the match, he had no choice.

In desperation Gillian and her brother Nicholas ran away, only to get lost in the freezing snow. But Gillian and Nick weren't the only ones out in the snow that night - a man, wronged by the same King, was dying of cold nearby.

Hearing his cry for help, Gillian and Nick investigate, and in doing so find their own salvation - a house which would shelter them from the snow; and an exiled Prince from Gillian's past.

Even after reaching the safety of the house, the two young adults were not out of the woods. Rolf de Vinnes was on their trail, Determined to find his wayward fiancee. Having lusting after Gillian for many years he is willing to go to any lengths to recover her.

Can a Prince-in-exile, a young woman and her brother overcome the forces that a King's favoured companion could muster?

Their predicament sets in motion a train of events that would leave a kingdom reeling. Helped by priests, pirates and princes the trio just might survive. And if they do - the betrayals and treachery that they discover could destroy powerful political alliances. It will also set in motion an unstopable train of events that started two generations ago.

For the sake of one man's lust, a kingdom might topple...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, a definate must read.......2000-02-13

Absolutely Fantastic! If you haven't read this book yet, I strongly recommend you grab it and do so. Be careful though, once you open it and start reading, you won't be able to put it back down until you've finished. Ms. Boyett-Compo has packed this book so full that it overflows. There is fantasy, romance, danger, adventure, and mystery, this book has it all.

Lady Gillian Cree (Gilly) is a strong willed, spirited young woman. She is in love with Prince Kaelan Hesar and wants to marry him, but her father and stepmother have different plans. They have approved of her betrothal to another man, one she despises. Lord Nicholas Cree (Nick) is Gilly's older brother and he is determined to do everything he possibly can to help Gilly escape from The Keep, their home, so their father cannot force her to wed. Prince Kaelan Hesar has loved Gilly since she was a child and has paid dearly for his love. His older brother Duncan, the Jarl, has forced Kaelan to wed another and cast him out. But Kaelan's love for Gilly still burns stronger than ever and now that he is free, he is determined they will wed.

The three of them begin a dangerous journey. Running for their lives to find freedom from those that would rule them. With the help of a few friends they meet on the way, their journey crosses many lands and seas to reach their final destination.

This book is completely spellbinding, it grabs you from the first sentence and even after you've turned that final page, you still reach for another page. I am definitely hooked and can hardly wait to read WindChance to find out more.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Prose.......1999-12-14

Charlotte Boyette-Compo's book grips you at page one, pulls you in, and doesn't let you go. If you want a book that will keep you turning the pages, right up to the conclusion--then look no further. WindFall is an outstanding read.

      Book Description

Windfall includes poems from three previous books by Maggie Anderson, along with a generous selection of new work. In this collection we can see over two decades of the growth of a poet memorable for the clarity, strength, and urgency of her voice. Anderson's poems entangle a language, a history, and a group of belongings, and she is both at home and a foreigner in the places she invokes. Every place in these poems seems inhabitable, yet the tensions of these deceptively quiet lines develop out of the clear reluctance or inability of the poet to sit still. Maggie Anderson writes out of deep grief for the political losses of work and money, of life and limb and home in our dangerous times. She remembers and witnesses, and she also speaks eloquently for our private griefs--the loss of family, vitality and self. These poems do not shout; we listen as if following a whisper in the dark. A counterpoint to the sorrows in these poems is a complex and often joyous music, as well as a wry, sometimes self-deprecating humor which saves the work from solemnity. Her rhythms are diverse and intricate; they move deftly from fiddle whine to saxophone, from fugue to blues.

      5 out of 5 stars A Windfall Indeed.......2006-10-30

Readers of Maggie Anderson's work won't be surprised to note that the same grace with character and story flows throughout these selections. These poems are stately and intimate but with a kind of tender interior voice that maintains dignity and poise. Here is a voice that knows what it knows and tells it in a tone that makes readers want to bend closer to hear. For teachers, this is a good book to show how one can manage place and the way that someone who knows a place really well can move through the expository or posturing and into the kind of giving of a landscape to a reader like the best kind of gift--one that shows a sensitive knowing of what is needed and what will delight. A gorgeous offering--a true windfall.

      5 out of 5 stars stunning.......2002-02-03

Maggie Anderson's poems collected in Windfall are a masterful collection. I had the honor of hearing her read several of the poems, and her flat-toned, Appalachian voice really changes the more lyrical verse itself into something strikingly real. Ms. Anderson is amazing, and this collection will leave its impact.

4 out of 5 stars This is a Windfall of gems and precious stones.......2001-01-21

In a couple of poems in Windfall: New and Selected Poems, Maggie Anderson uses the analogy of pearls to describe objects in those poems. As I thought about her collection of poetry, the analogy of gems and precious stones on a gold chain was the first thing that came to mind.

The poems aren't like pearls because they vary in subject and style. The jewel that hangs prominently on the center of the chain is "Heart Fire". The poem, written in memory of a young man who took his life, vividly tells how everything Ms. Anderson sees reminds her of his physical attributes. It is an amethyst because of its richness in color. "Knife" and other poems in which Ms. Anderson discusses her fear of her father are marquise-cut diamonds that have points to pierce the bubble of a peaceful world. The Black Dog poems, especially "Black Dog Goes to Art Colony", are black onyx stones that counter the sharp diamonds with their smoothness and warmth.

But "Literary" aptly described my overall feelings as I read this book. Ms Anderson said that when she read poems as a young woman, she struggled to understand what they meant. Some of the poems in Windfall seemed beyond my mental grasp because I don't have an academic background in poetry. Since I also am unfamiliar with many of the plants Ms. Anderson mentions in her nature poetry, I saw holes in the landscapes that she was painting with her words. Instead of giving up on understanding the poems that were perplexing, I reread many of them. I was glad I made that effort because I picked up on the links of the gold chain that thread through the gems and stones. Although a poem early in the book told of her father's death, the fear of him still lives inside of Ms. Anderson. Connected to that chain of thought are the poems that deal with her mother and other relatives., who are painted as reticent individuals. Blackberries stimulate all of Ms. Anderson's senses, and she is highly conscious of boundaries of every sort.

Although I felt Windfall was sometimes challenging, I felt it was worth the struggle. "Heart Fire" is one of the best poems I've ever read, and I feel my knowledge of poetry has grown as a result of reading this book.

      Book Description

In his twenties and thirties, Ben never thought about money--more or less what you'd expect  from a scholar whose specialty was the transcendentalists.  But now, in his forties, trying to raise two children on a  thirty-thousand-dollar-a-year salary, it's all he thinks about.

Money is a problem for Ben Lindberg.  As a college professor, he's fought long and hard to keep his intellectual life--and his family life--safe and secure.  But he can't afford to replace his broken-down car, can't even afford to fix it, can't even afford to move his family into a better part of Austin.

Then, one night, things change.  Searching for the stray family cat, Ben finds in the basement of an abandoned feed store eight coolers filled with fifty-dollar bills.  A windfall.

He knew he should leave, but he couldn't.  It was the most extraordinary moment of his life and he wanted to savor it.

Ben takes the money, hides it and doesn't tell his wife.  For a time, their lives improve.  They move into a wonderful new house and buy a second car.  Ben becomes a hero to his family.  But when someone comes looking for the coolers, Ben discovers that everything comes at a cost--in this case, a cost beyond anything he could have imagined.

Windfall is the story of an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances.  Tautly plotted, intelligently written, and shot through with searing psychological insight, it is a novel of paranoia and betrayal, secrets and shattered ideals--a relentlessly suspenseful thriller.

5 out of 5 stars What dreams are made of.......2006-04-12

Ben Lindberg is an untenured assistant professor at a university (been there - done that). In Ben's case, he is in the English Department at the University of Texas. Admiral Jervis of the Royal Navy is reputed to have said that junior officers should not marry. Perhaps the same philosophy should apply to junior faculty members. Ben has a wife (second marriage) and two school age children. He is in his forties and has financial problems. He is in Austin, Texas, during the real estate boom, and is priced out of the market. There is a problem finding a suitable, affordable place to rent. His van is on its last legs and he doesn't know where he will find the money for a new one. He would like to do things for his wife and children, but money is tight, and they have to watch every penny. The future retirement outlook appears skimpy.

Ben goes out one evening in early January looking for the family cat, and thinks he hears it in a crawl space under an abandoned building. Instead of the cat, he finds a large cache of money - six ice chests packed full, mostly 50s and 100s. It is obviously unreported income from illegal activities and does not officially exist. Ben is caught on the horns of a dilemma. He is normally an honest man, but he badly needs money; and who would know if he helps himself. He takes the money and hides it, skimming off a bit for immediate needs. He makes a rough estimate based on bulk - over $7 million, enough to cover the annual payroll of his entire university department for many years.

Ben lacks iron nerves, and having the money makes him edgy. He researches means of laundering money ranging from buying large numbers of lottery tickets to depositing the money in a bank in the Bahamas. He observes some shady looking men making inquiries, and needs to keep a low profile. He does not want to tell his wife because she might want to turn the money in to proper authorities; but needs to explain the sudden added income. It creates family problems. He makes an arrangement with one of his students to launder some of the money through a business.

Then there is collateral damage. Someone is killed. Things start to fall apart. Ben has doubts about trusting the student. Universities don't teach people survival skills for the real world jungle, and there is a danger Ben will be eaten by tigers (he is not very street smart). The bad guys get a lead on Ben, and show up wanting their money. Ben's life is torn apart. There is an added twist at the end (maybe a double twist).

I would note that the author is in the English Department at the University of Texas and is intimately familiar with the scenes used in the novel (his wife is from a Mississippi family). It is very well written, drawing the reader into the story and holding your attention. Readers might think of how they would have handled things but, given the same circumstances, would you have done things differently? Hindsight is always better than foresight. I might add that there is never an indication of what happened to the money in the coffee can under the porch.

Readers are also referred to the author's latest novel, "The Hounds of Winter."

5 out of 5 stars Should Have Told His Wife Up Front.......2002-12-08

Ben should have told his wife, Katy, up front. Two minds are better than one and she might not have been so wobbly, stronger backbone. A good read as the reader goes along trying to figure out how to have done it differently. Some may think the latter half of the story follows standard thriller lines. See also "The Moneybag" for legal aspects of a similar situation.

2 out of 5 stars Decent start, interesting premise, lousy finish.......2001-08-24

This was a disappointing book. It started ok, and actually was a fairly good (maybe B-) read for most of the book, but just a terrible finish (like D-).

The protaganist was just too wimpy. And the book finishes that way.

This was a thriller that was also a human drama (or was it a human drama that was also a thriller?). But the thrill died out, and the drama didn't flourish.

I'd give it one star, but it was decent most of the way through, so let's go with 2**.

      5 out of 5 stars A Rare Thriller.......2000-02-22

Though the plotline may not cover entirely new territory, Magnuson's deft style more than makes up for it. He manages to paint a very vivid picture of the world Ben inhabits, with its moments of both happiness and terror. The reader becomes wound up in Ben's life. And, Windfall is so tightly written that it is impossible to put down.

      4 out of 5 stars Riveting.......1999-09-12

Plot is complex and surprising, a real "page-turner". More unusual, the moral/ethical issues are also presented with depth and complexity.

Deep in the heart of genre fiction - your classic airport thriller.

Our heroes tend to merge a bit: they've all got military and/or CIA backgrounds and have the same sort of skills and personalities. The opening was almost as good as the finish was bad. The way Bagley started with his loner nearing burnout (but honest and ultimately resourceful) private detective was enjoyable, as was the merging with a wider conspiracy and the central hero. Moreover Africa is a usable exotic location for the increasingly silly adventures. But the book is a gentle and finally a steep slide from readable to tosh. Bagley has painted himself in a half a dozen James Bond characters who in the last couple of chapters inexplicably run into mad panic at meeting a couple of bad guys. The climax couldn't be any more stupid: with the resources of the whole nation at their beck and call, the heroes inexplicably charge alone in the most disorganised of attacks on a compound they could have quietly surrounded with a small army if they had've made a phone call once the game was up. C'mon, my standards aren't too high for this sort of thing, but surely Bagley could go to the trouble of constructing a context where heroics are vaguely necessary. Even more irritating with characters frequently described as hugely intelligent. The climax is lazy - we have it because we must, but the threat is never really even spelt out: what, the South Africans had stored a few weapons underground they might have intended to use in a year or two? It wasn't some sort of doomsday device that had to be disconnected as the clock was ticking down. Why the absurd rush?

So, yeah, after a reasonable start where we were growing to like Ben Hardin for what he said and how he acted, we descended into being told to like and respect Max Stafford and Chip and Curtis and Nair etc. because they're all such sharp and cool operators - without them doing anything much sharp or cool or likable.

Interesting that there's not a whiff of sex in this attempted crowd pleaser - I thought early eighties would have been catering for that, but maybe not. There's barely even flirting, and the early token female that I assumed would be a love interest just fades away - maybe for a later appearance in the series?

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read........2000-06-02

If you like detective fiction, spy fiction, or simply action thrillers, Desmond Bagley is an author you should definitely discover. His plots are as plausible as that in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", but he manages to keep them moving at a much brisker pace, with a great deal more action. His characters are very believable, and although he doesn't go out of his way to write obvious dialect, one can still hear the subtle differences in language between an American, a British man, a white South African, a Sikh, and an educated black Kenyan. A South African himself, Bagley seems very knowledgable of Africa, but he also seems comfortable when his plots take the action to Britain, or even to the United States. He is the author of about a dozen books; all are at least good, and this is one of his better efforts.

              Book Description

A retired U.S. Navy captain becomes an inadvertent witness to the hasty hiding of a cache of drug cartel money by felons being pursued by the police in Los Angeles. The captain is a recent widower who has just lost his retirement job with a defense contractor and is, at the moment, without purpose and motivation.

As a consequence, he makes an impulsive decision to keep the money; and goes on the run. The drug cartel is searching for him and are hot on his heels.

Without any options, and with the assistance of a former shipmate, he stages his own suicide, undergoes an identity change and extensive plastic surgery.

Armed with his new identity he escapes in his sailboat and makes the long solo journey across the Pacific Ocean to a small atoll near Tahiti where he finds romance and redemption. The journey becomes a voyage of discovery, self-realization, adventure and beauty.

There he is tracked down by members of the drug cartel and, in a searing confrontation at sea, his bride-to-be manages to save him by taking on the cartel in a fiercely uncharacteristic show of determination.

The peculiar circumstances surrounding the mysterious, unexplained disappearance of all but one of the cartel team sent to apprehend him and recover the money; coupled with a macabre package sent anonymously to the cartel leadership, convince them to end their search.

Deadly Windfall has all the ingredients of a feast, the entree, a seabag full of money, millions of dollars. Then, the danger for an appetizer. The wine satisfies our thirst for more by providing a sea chase that takes us lands away in hot pursuit. All of which are served with panache, on a table set for everyone. Oh, and for desert we are treated to a hot love affair. Wish I had thought of it. I've been looking in the bushes for seabags ever since reading Deadly Windfall.

This is an exciting and unusual book! Truly mind-blowing sci-fi erotica by one of the best writers of any genre around. Give yourself the ultimate gift and buy this book today! And check out M. Christian's other collections, as well, especially my favorite: Guilty Pleasures. :)

5 out of 5 stars If the future is like this, I'm not sure it's safe...!.......2003-11-19

It's so rare when a science fiction writer knows how to handle sex in his stories. M. Christian, though, seems to be one of the gifted ones. I don't read erotica, as a general rule, but because this book was featured at my favorite SF store, I picked it up. A quick perusal of a few pages convinced me I had to read more. It's one of the very best books I've read in months -- he creates fantastic worlds that are simultaneously believeable and other-worldly. Some of the stories were indeed very erotic but the eroticism sort of crept up on me, which intensified both the story and the sex. Very, very well written. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Psychosexual Dynamics.......2003-10-27

The Bachelor Machine is not simply excellent erotica set in the science fiction genre. It explores issues of identity, psychosexual dynamics, and is incredibly insightful into human nature. This is the best book I have read this year.

              4 out of 5 stars Cyber Erotica.......2003-10-19

              M. Christian blends scifi and steamy erotica in this well written tale. I highly recomend this book for somone who is looking for something to expand their boundries.

              4 out of 5 stars Alternate Universe.......2003-10-09

The scenes in these stories lingered in my thoughts long after I put the book down. The most intriguing aspect was the contrast between the cold and detached environments where the characters interact and the sensuality that infuses everything. I enjoy visiting worlds beyond my own, and this book took me there.
