Book Description
Author, poet, screenwriter and outstanding member of the legendary Algonquin Round Table, Dorothy Parker was known for her quick wit, keen observations, and remarkable insight into the human condition. Regarded as brilliant, but known to be an alcoholic and often depressed, Parker's work pushes all buttons at once: humor, anger, love, pity and everything in between ... she pulled no punches, writing with pure, unadulterated passion; her work is timeless and as pertinent to today's society as it was to that of the time she wrote.
Among the gems included in this collection are her first published short story, "Such a Pretty Little Picture" and her O. Henry Award winner "Big Blonde," several other short stories, and, unlike other audio collections, some of her review work.

Actors who can't read.......2007-03-27
Ok, I LOVE Dorthy Parker but this CD set is hard to listen to. The chick from sex in the city starts it off and LOST me in 10 minutes. Sounds like she could use some read-out-loud lessons.
I guess these stories just don't "read" well out loud.
I suggest reading the books yourself.

Book Description
The High Druid of Shannara trilogy draws to a thrilling close as a young hero nears completion of his trial by fire, a banished ruler fights for her life in a wilderness of dread, and forces of darkness and light square off in a battle unto death for the right to absolute rule. Prepare to be spellbound by the masterly hand of bestselling legend weaver Terry Brooks, conjuring at the peak of his skills.
For reasons known only to himself, the King of the Silver River has charged young Penderrin Ohmsford, barely more than a boy, with the daunting task of rescuing his aunt, Grianne, Ard Rhys of the Druid order, from her forced exile in the terrifying dimension of all things damned: the Forbidding. With the noble dwarf Tagwen and the prodigal elven princess Khyber Elessedil by his side–and with the outcome of the bloody war between the Federation and the Free-born at stake–Pen has accepted his mission without question. But not without risk . . . or sacrifice.
Because Shadea a’Ru, the ruthless Druid responsible for imprisoning the true Ard Rhys and usurping leadership at Paranor, has sent her agents and assassins in relentless pursuit of Pen and his comrades. And in securing the talisman he needs to breach the Forbidding, Pen has paid a devastating price. Now if the Free-born forces–already decimated by the Federation’s death-dealing new weapon–should fall, Shadea’s domination of the Four Lands will be assured. Nothing short of Pen’s success can turn the tide.
But Pen’s challenge grows greater when he learns that his parents, Bek Ohmsford and Rue Meridian, have fallen into Shadea’s hands. He must try to help them–but once within the walls of Druid’s Keep, where Shadea’s minions and dark magic lurk at every turn, Pen’s survival is far from assured. Yet it will all pale in comparison to the horrors that wait inside the Forbidding–horrors poised to break free upon the Four Lands when the time is right. . . .

Peace returns to the Four Lands!.......2007-09-28
Jarka Ruus announced Terry Brooks' re-emergence as a master of the fantasy genre. Then Tanequil pushed that envelope further and showcased his skills as a writer that could add realism, extended character development and thoughtful, probing philosophical discussion to an exciting, perfectly-paced action filled plot! Straken is the icing on the cake - the exciting conclusion to a trilogy weaves together the myriad plotlines and allows the reader to turn the final page and sit back with a smile and a satisfied sigh of contentment!
The threads of each of the story lines are gathered up, woven together and brought to a stunning conclusion. Young Pen Ohmsford's quest to enter the Forbidding, discover the magic of the "darkwand" and release his aunt Grianne Ohmsford, Ard Rhys of the lawful Druids and the Straken queen is completed. Grianne, in turn, must face her usurper and arch-foe, Shadea a'Ru in a final cataclysmic confrontation at Paranor, the ancient Druid's keep. The Free Born's struggle against Sen Dunsidan and the forces of the Federation with their unstoppable fire weapon is concluded and peace returns to the Four Lands.
Frankly, I don't think it's a spoiler to let potential readers know all's well that ends well! Most readers of the Shannara universe and this particular trilogy would probably be devastated to discover otherwise. But, you will find the ending to be a superb unexpected twist nonetheless that proves Terry Brooks can still keep a hidden ace up his sleeve to play at an opportune moment. I've only got one question left, Mr Brooks! Where in the world is Weka Dart?
Highly recommended!

Excellent read for Sword & Sorcery fans.......2007-08-25
While this book at times felt like it lacked as much substance as previous books, I feel it was a great ending to the trilogy. I really liked the ending which was unexpected, yet brought a good sense of closure to the trilogy.
Aaayyyy (putting hand out flat and twisting it left to right and back).......2007-04-12
Tremendous build up over the first two books than..bleeaah. I got to within 40 pages of the end and couldn't finish, it was like..."yeah. I get it..evil dies, good wins..blaa"
Not nearly as awesome as the trilogy before this one, (Flight of the Jerle Shannara) read that instead, fantastic.
Straken: High Druid of Shannara.......2007-04-10
Not the best of the series. I thought it got a little dry and predictable in parts/
Good book but not Terry's best, by a long shot........2007-04-06
I've read every single Terry Brooks release so far except for the Star Wars one. I read Straken primarily because I'm a fan of the Shannara series, BIG fan.
Without spoiling anything, I will say that if you didn't read the Voyage series, you won't be able to fully appreciate what's going on in the High Druid series. You won't get lost or anything - you just won't have a full appreciation of certain characters and events, and why some things are as they are now.
Straken started off very slow, attempting to pick up the pieces left over from Tanequil, the previous version in the series, due to the mandatory year-long delay between book releases. So it tries really hard to tie up loose threads to bring the story back to a sensible medium. The problem is that this approach feels like fluff, as the first few chapters of the book really don't feel that compelling. The "climax" of this entry doesn't feel climactic at all, as Brooks chose to go a different path than what the reader expected to see. Some might see this as smart writing, I see it as a cop-out. To say any more would spoil it, but trust me...it didn't make me happy when I read it.
That said, the ending was top notch. I'd say the last 5 chapters in particular were very well written, and even a slight plot twist that actually gets you emotionally involved, causing you to express feelings for one particular character. It leads one to question exactly what more could be done at this point in the Shannara series.
Would I recommend this book? ONLY if you've read the Voyage series and ONLY if you've read both Jarka Ruus and Tanequil. If you don't read the Voyage series you won't appreciate what's going on, and if you don't read both Jarka Ruus and Tanequil you will be confused.

Mmm, evil Kira!.......2007-01-01
I had always loved the "Mirror Universe" episodes from all of the various Trek series. It gave a refreshing respite from the regular Star Trek universe where everyone is always supposed to be so darned high-minded and goody-goody. And the episode featuring evil Kira and Garak was always my favourite of these. So when I saw this book on the store shelves with "Intendant Kira" featured in all her wicked glory right on the cover I knew I HAD to read it.
I was disappointed that evil Garak is actually not in the book much and is just a minor character. Instead this 2-volume story focuses on the female characters of the parallel universe. This story takes place sometime before the DS9 characters rediscover the parallel universe.
It details the backstabbing political intrigues involved as Kira maneuvers for ever more power within the Klingon-Cardassian Empire, which in the parallel universe succeeded in crushing the former Terran Empire thanks to our universe's James T. Kirk having earlier convinced the parallel universe's Spock to spread a pacifist message there.
But there are others vying for the same power that Kira wants, or seeking to keep her from it. Among them are Deanna Troi, who occupies a position of great influence as lover of Worf, head of the Empire. Also Enabran Tain, head of the Obsidian Order, who sends his crack Terran assassin Agent Seven on a mission to infiltrate Kira's power base. And Tain's disgruntled rival Gul Dukat, who also seeks to regain some of his former power.
I thought the first of the two books was great, as we get LOTS of evil Kira, plus the cool spy intrigues of Agent Seven. Book 2 on the other hand.... well, I'll write a review for that one soon too, but just let me say I thought it wasn't quite as good.
But I still LOVE the mirror universe and wish they would write MORE stories taking place there. It's got a lot more gritty atmosphere and has the possibility to tell some very edgy stories.
So should you get this book? Sure, it's just plain a lot of fun. -- But don't get your hopes up too high for a brilliant conclusion. Just sit back and enjoy the ride (especially this first volume).
A must-read.......2004-08-21
This is a great crossover novel. I really enjoyed the B'Elanna of this 'reality': she embraces her Klingon half, hates her human half, and befrieds Seven. You should read this, if you like DS9, TNG, OR VOY.
Star Trek Dark Passions I of II - Absolutely stunning!.......2004-05-23
Over the years, Susan Wright has proven herself to be an extremely reliable author in the Star Trek universe and this "Dark Passions" duology is no exception to that. I found the entire story to be thoroughly intriguing, extremely well paced and the characterizations to be perfect for what one might expect of these characters in the mirror universe.
With this small duology, Susan Wright took the rather apropos approach of building upon the known and unknown characters in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine mirror universe episodes and created an extraordinary story that actually takes place prior to start of the series, giving her the advantage of having all of the characters to use and giving her the opportunity to create a much more original story to include killing certain characters off. This is an extremely powerful story that involves the majority of the female characters in the current Star Trek universe, proving their "mettle" so to speak and using them to perfection.
The only true complaint I would lodge about this duology falls more into place with the decisions of those at Pocket Books than with the author and that is the fact that this "novel" was broken into two books. Considering the rather standard sized text and the fact that the first book is only 232 pages and the second is 200 pages, this could've and should've been one novel instead of an obvious ploy to ply an extra $6.99 out of "passionate" Star Trek readers; bad on the powers that be at Pocket Books.
The cover art for this novel makes this and the second novel that much more intriguing considering the originality of the story.
The Premise:
As it might spoil the story a bit I won't delve too deeply into the premise of this wonderful story. Suffice it to say, this story involves the majority of the major female characters from "The Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" in extremely enlightening roles carrying an extremely original story to fruition through healthy amounts of intrigue and action...
Overall, I highly recommend this and the second book in this small duology to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction and especially to those that thoroughly enjoyed the mirror universe episodes on Star Trek Deep Space Nine. {ssintrepid}
One of the best........2002-10-14
this book is one of the best depictions of the mirror universe ive seen... it caugth me in the first few pages i read it (both volumes) in 3 days...
It would be hard to do better.
A fun ride in the Mirror Universe.......2001-08-08
Initially when I found out this was a two book series I was annoyed b/c I felt that it was really one book broken into two to increase revenue. After reading both, I realize that although this is partially true, the two books each have a very different flavor to them.
Book One really sets the tone with the mad rush for power in the former Terran Empire. In the beginning none of the charachters really came across as one of the "good guys" (or gals as the case may be) and it wasn't until about halfway through the story that it became clear who the protagonist was. There are lots of cameo's by charachters from NegGen, DS9, & Voyager who show up in some very unexpected places; I half expected Kirk or Uhuro to be thrown into the mix. In addition, there are also some very unlikely romantic pairings, which will keep the reader off balance - as one reviewer mentioned "this is not your father's Star Trek".
I can honestly say that the plots twists kept me guessing all the way through both books. Both of which are a quick read and lots of fun. Susan Wright left the door open for further books in this continuity, but these will be tough to top.
Book Description
Intendant Kira, now Overseer for the entire Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, has entered into a dangerous liaison with Annika Hansen, unaware that Hansen is actually an agent of the Obsidian Order who has orders to kill Kira when the time is right. But her treacherous alliance is not the only danger the Intendant faces. Both Deanna Troi, the power-hungry consort of Regent Worf, and B'Elanna Torres, the half-human Intendant of the Sol System, are threatened by Kira's unquenchable ambition, and would be glad to see her deposed -- or worse.
As four powerful women scheme for control of the Alliance, who will survive? And who will claim the ultimate prize?

Not quite as good as the first book.......2007-01-07
This is the second half of a 2-volume story set in Star Trek's "Mirror Universe". Overall, I would say that while it was good, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first volume.
The thing I really liked about the first volume was that it had a pretty even balance between Agent (of the Cardassian Obsidian Order) Seven and evil Kira. We got to see LOTS of both. But in this second volume, the focus becomes mainly on Seven, while Kira becomes more of just a supporting character. Also, I found some situations seemed to be solved too easily and implausibly. And it sometimes felt a little rushed compared to the first volume, like the author was trying to squeeze in the ending under a certain page limit.
And by the end of the book it becomes ENTIRELY focused on Seven, and ends with a rather preachy ending that I didn't like at all (--because I'm rooting for the BAD guys, and that's the whole reason why I love the Mirror Universe!) So to really love this book I'd say that you should be a major fan of Seven. (Hey, I like her and all, but evil Kira is one of my FAVOURITE Star Trek characters of all, and I guess I was disappointed that she didn't get equal coverage this time out.)
In addition, the book's cover is misleading and will no doubt leave many Janeway and Crusher fans in disappointment, as Janeway is just a very minor character here and Beverly Crusher is barely even in the book. The cover SHOULD have featured B'Elanna Torres and Deanna Troi instead of them.
Also, like some other reviewers I wonder if these 2 books could not have just as easily been published together in 1 volume?
But still, I feel happy to have had a chance to pay another visit to that twisted dimension that is the Mirror Universe. I hope that the people putting these Star Trek books out will hear me when I say that I would love to see MORE books featuring adventures set there -- preferably with more focus on the wonderful baddies who populate it.
Star Trek Dark Passions II of II - A great conclusion!.......2004-05-23
Star Trek "Dark Passions" book two of two is the glorious continuation of and conclusion to the first novel in this small duology that uses a majority of current Star Trek's strongest female characters from the mirror universe. Just as in the first novel, Susan Wright's extraordinary writing skills such as exceptional pacing, thoroughly intriguing plot set up and execution and strong characterizations stand out brilliantly in this novel.
As stated in my review for the first novel in this small duology, the only downside to this story has nothing to do with the author as Pocket Books chose to skim their faithful readers for an extra $6.99 by breaking this story into two novels when they could've easily cut down on the pitch for the type and published this great story in one novel.
Just as in the first novel, the cover art is an exception to the rule for when this novel was published.
The Premise:
Book two carries the story on in which Seven (Annika Hansen) who in the mirror universe is an Obsidian Order agent, is continuing to stay close to Kira Nerys in the hopes of carrying out her mission but she is also having second thoughts about her goals in life as she is for the first time in her life thinking for herself which can and will have some serious ramifications for those she's dealing with...
As stated above, this is an exceptional conclusion to a wonderful story that I highly recommend to any and all fans of Star Trek fans and especially to those that thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek Deep Space Nine's mirror universe episodes just as I did. {ssintrepid}
Volume 2.......2002-10-14
The 2nd volume was just as good as the first... its hard to make a sequel or part two just as good a s the first but they did... it is a must read.
I've continued to resist the urge to throw it away........2002-04-14
Contiues the problems from the first novel. Bad/predictable plotting, stretched thin and unbelievable dramatics. The persistant use of the idea (promogated in the series admittedly) of bisexual equals evil (after all, only the -bad- Kira beds down every woman (and man and eunich) she comes across.
Plot developements with Troi and B'Elanna that might have saved the book were destroyed by ill placed melodramatics.
Oh, and the cover is misleading, though Crusher and Janeway appear in the novel, they are less than afterthoughts.
Mirror personalities.......2001-10-10
The most striking thing about the two books is how many of our favorite characters have personalities which aren't just different, but either evil or ineffectual. The story centers on Seven's battle with Kira which makes her focus on discovering her true self. With the exception of Troi, Worf, and Torres, most other characters are only touched on. Kira is evil personified. Worf is only a puppet, not a true Klingon. Troi has a complex personality, but definitely not the caring Troi we know. Seven is also complex as the central character.
Once you leave the "real" Star Trek Universe behind, the story is entertaining, but it is very dark. There is a sexual content as well, but not explicitly described. This second book is much more enjoyable than the first.
Book Description
The story begins in Zero B.C.>, in the Swing between Worlds, as Mary Magdalena, Jesus Christ, and Judas Iscariot create the greatest drama of all time. With the guidance of Spirit, they design the prophecy that will be fulfilled in 2000 years.
That prophecy is now unfolding and we are all being called to remember our design. Now is the time.

Awesome Journey.......2007-05-13
One of the most spiritual books of the life of Mary M and Jesus.
Amazing energy emanates from the pages.
Truer to the heart.......2005-10-04
This visionary account of Mary Magdalena is closer to my heart than any other story of her I have heard up to this point. An empowering look into her life and the path that she walked 2000 years ago (not to mention the agreement she made to walk it). What a gift Flo Calhoun is for having the courage to put forth such a detailed account of what was revealed to her. Truely a book to deeply consider and reflect upon.
A Phony Book of Garbage.......2005-04-25
I bought this book, believing that the Bible did not include all there is to know about Mary Magdalene. I am open to religious ideas of all teachings. I can consider the possibility that we choose our own paths before we are born into earth, but I found this book to be perverse. What do physical unions between two women have to do with the life of Christ and Mary Magdalene? I've read and loved the Conversations with God books. To compare this heap of trash with Conversations with God is inappropriate. I Remember Union was a huge disappointment to someone on a genuine spiritual journey. I believe the author made the whole story up.
Possibly the most beautiful book I have ever read........2004-12-27
I originally read this book in 1997. Its impact on me has been profound - It entirely altered my perspective on Mary, Christ, Judas, and the classic biblical account of Christ's time on earth.
I knew deep inside of me from the time I was a little girl that there was far more to Mary Magdalene than her proported role as a reformed prostitute. She had held a certain fascination for me throughout my life, and it was such a relief to find this book and hear her story - and yes, I do believe that it is indeed her story.
I admire Flo's courage for daring to write this book as she no doubt knew the flack she would take for it. I pray that she has been strong enough to not only withstand it but to be validated because of it.
Profoundly moving and powerful.......2000-08-23
This book resonates with the power and beauty of spirit. The story is so strong and heartfelt about the entire unfolding of Jesus and the interactions among the others. I was so moved that often I had to stop reading and reflect before I could continue. The story makes sense and rings true to me. A must read. Powerfully told and beautifully written.
