5 out of 5 stars best of the best.......2003-08-21

this is a GREAT anthology. bright has done it once again, and this year it's even better than in the past because this edition includes interviews with some BAE authors of past years, as well as some of the best of the best erotica as voted by readers. there are gay, lesbian, straight, and BDSM stories, and probably a few others that i can't think of a name for at the moment. a GREAT collection, i highly recommend it for the erotica enthusiast and the erotica 'virgin.'

4 out of 5 stars the best of the best.......2003-05-17

I thought this best american erotica was the best so far in the series with 1996 being a close second. I sometimes read the stories just because they are good but this time around there were a few times I had to stop reading to go especially enjoy myself if ya know what I mean.

4 out of 5 stars bedtime stories!.......2003-05-07

I thought this round of the Best Of erotica series was great! Not only were the mix of stories entertaining--there's a voyeur's glee to be had, peeking into what other folks find stimulating as well as the stuff I like--but this anniversary edition also includes Susie's delightfully breezy notes about just what sorts of people the best of...erotica writers are. As if that weren't enough, after you've savored the stories tale by tale (or tail), there's a bonus section in the back featuring some of the reader's favorites over the years. I was especially happy to see an excerpt from my all-time favorite erotica book, Nicholson Baker's "Fermata." It's a shame Mr Baker is no longer gracing us sauce-ready readers with his special literary, wordplayful brand of "rot," as he calls it. Given the loss to literature, being able to visit a old favorite was especially nice.

Perhaps the best part of the book, and of the whole series, is the feeling I get--that, you know what? It takes all kinds, we all like to have fun, and we're all sexual creatures under our clothes. Rowr!

2 out of 5 stars Warning: These are not "the best".......2003-04-21

The reading public should know that these stories are the "best" according to the editor's taste -- and the editor doesn't write erotica. There are lots of erotica books out there where the stories are high quality and where the authors didn't get included based on what they could do for the editor's reputation. Don't be fooled by the title. The "best" is highly subjective.

3 out of 5 stars Must have an Open Mind!!!!.......2003-03-07

I love some of these stories. There is something for everyone with any sexual orientation. You need to have an open mind--there are stories of dominace, gay and lesbian sex, and kink of all kinds. You may or may not find this hot, but provides intersting reading, anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Mitchell Hundred used to be a superhero. That is, until he failed to stop the destruction of both Twin Towers in New York, by terrorists, only leaving one.

He decides to become a politician, and because of hassles and disagreements, gives the party system the arse and runs as an independent.

5 out of 5 stars Play like graphic novel in a realistic setting.......2007-06-08

I haven't been into too many comic books. Mostly because superheros were never really my thing. A friend of mine was telling me about a few comics, and recommended this one to me. Being a bit skeptical I picked it up and read the volume.

The story started a bit slow to get in to. Probably because of my skepticism. However at the end I wanted to read more, and more. Not because of a cliffhanger either. The art is done beautifully, modeled from actual people. It is told naturally, but it seems like they put it together like a play. It is realistic in the sense of a lot of actual things in New York city exist. The way it is told is real. Without a little "magic" in it (no spoilers), you would think it was a true political story.

2 out of 5 stars Meh.......2007-04-05

Some people probably rate Ex Machina versus the universe of graphic novels or comic books, or perhaps even including written sci-fi. This first volume likely stacks up pretty well there. I rate it versus a larger universe, where really great art is ... rare. In this genre, so far, there are, for me, two standouts: Watchmen, and slightly lesser, but still great, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. This doesn't even come close, and would get, charitably, three stars.

Now, price. I paid $10-ish for the first volume of many, which barely lasted me an hour of reading. You can have the complete sets of the above masterpieces for around $10-15 per. I'm sorry, but I'm not a comic-book guy, so this just feels slightly like a rip-off to me. Minus one star.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mature comic book.......2007-04-05

A very interesting exploration of the concepts of "hero"/"politician" and of the subtle and not so subtle contradictions within any power structure.
Also very funny!

5 out of 5 stars Ex Machina Vol. 1: The First Hundred Days.......2007-04-04

Good story.
Good pictures.
Why not...it sure beats the cookie-cutter superheroes and the way he uses his power is niffty.
AND he can balance the budget too!

Book Description

When Derek Secrest was suddenly pulled out of the Naval Academy to take part in a top secret government project involving telepathy-because tests showed that he had a strong latent talent for psi powers-he thought things couldn't get more weird. He was wrong. Soon he was contacted by a mysterious woman who could open portals at will through spacetime. Her powers seemed godlike, and they were. Millennia ago, extra-dimensional beings with great powers had come to earth and taken on human form, to be later remembered in legends as gods and goddesses-and titans, the ancient enemies of the gods. The godlike beings had driven off the titans, but now they are returning, with a new plan to use humans with psionic abilities to rule the Earth, and not be driven from it this time. And the titans always did have a fondness for human sacrifice and other anti-social activities. Unless Derek and a handful of other telepaths can join forces with the ancient gods to defeat the titans, the world will be plunged into a new dark age of terror and death. But, judging from mythology, just how much can you really trust a god. . . ?

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2007-03-16

Not at all what I thought it would be when I started reading it. While I did skim from time to time it was never for more than half a page. I just couldn't bring myself to care at all what the bad guys did or said.

I recommend this book but hope there are no sequals as I think they'd stink.

4 out of 5 stars Gods meet Spacemen with unpredictable results.......2007-01-08

Steve White started his writing career with Dave Weber writing books set in the Universe of the Starfire space wargames but his writing has tremendously broadened and improved since then and this is one of his best books to date.

This is one of the few books which are hard to categorise as between science fiction and fantasy. Most science fiction books and most fantasy books are so different that the tendancy of publishers and bookstores to lump them in one category is downright irritating, but this is one of those which features Gods and Spacemen and still somehow manages to hang together.

The plot is quite gripping and easy to follow. As in most of White's books, some of the bad guys do truly evil things which means the tone of the book gets a bit dark in places, but there are some good flashes of humour which lighten it up a bit.

Bottom line, if you liked any of Steve White's other books you will almost certainly like this one. It is also a bit like Piers Anthony's "Incarnations of Immortality" series, or like some of C.S. Lewis's more adult works such as the Ransom trilogy, although not so firmly rooted in one particular religious view.

One warning to anyone tempted to buy the book on the basis of the cover art, which shows a beautiful woman fleeing from spacesuited figures through a mysterious portal onto a sea shore. This scene does actually appear in the book, but in the text the woman is wearing a checked shirt, jeans and sneakers, while in the cover illustration all her clothes have mysteriously disappeared.

2 out of 5 stars This is the type of SF novel I try to avoid.......2004-02-27

"Forge of the Titans" starts out promisingly. It has an interesting lead character, Derek Secrest, who is pulled out of Naval flight officer training school a week before his graduation, in order to participate in a top secret government project.

Navy slang and acronyms lent verisimilitude to the book's first thirty or so pages, and Derek's disappointment in missing his graduation drew my sympathy. The top secret project involving psionic powers has been done many times, but I was willing to follow Derek on his reluctant journey to develop his telepathic talent. I liked the setting, his friends, and even some of the characters who were lifted right out of the SF bible of stock players, such as the humorless but brilliant female scientist.

Derek is ordered to track down a terrorist and determine what he plans to do with a supply of deadly nerve gas. Okay. Fine. That sounds like a practical military application for telepathy. Derek reads his terrorist's mind prevents the release of the nerve gas, but then all sorts of plot devices begin hitting the fan. Goddesses, Titans, and assorted aliens from outer space show up who have nothing to do with the original terrorist plot. Derek and his friends take a space plane into orbit and are kidnapped by the aliens, who turn out to be humans who have developed a superior technology based on magic.

"Forge of the Titans" then descends into techno-babble. Normally, I like a book with snappy dialogue, even when I'm being fed all sorts of pseudo-science (or maybe I should say futuristic science---Heinlein did this so very well without stalling his plot or lessening my attraction to his characters). But I really lost interest when the author began to crank out reams of sentences like: "Soon, the remaining antimatter missles were being launched at 'sprint' ranges, making interdiction difficult even for point-defense lasers." The book turned into a sort of "Psionic Hercules versus the Titans in Outer Space."

Finally, my favorite character is killed off in what seems like a feeble bid for reader sympathy, but he dies so stupidly it simply ended up annoying me.

I don't think I'll bother with the inevitable sequel.

5 out of 5 stars The War of the Gods, Phase 2.......2004-01-21

Forge of the Titans is the seventh solo novel by the author. This novel is about a group of powerful alien entities who originated in an adjacent universe, the Void. These aliens were organized energy sources within the featureless and amorphous energies of the Void and existed in a state of perpetual sensory deprivation. Then one of them discovered a way to pass from the Void into our universe, where the entities found matter and the joys of sensory perception.

The aliens who first passed through to Earth ruled the natives by might and terror as the Titans. Later, entities from the Void came in the semblance of the Olympian gods and, although still fickle and hard to please, they were more sympathetic towards mankind. Millennia ago, these gods battled the Titans and, with the help of human mages, defeated them and banished their lifeforces back into the Void. The battle caused the island home of the mages to sink into the sea, so the gods searched the galaxy for another home for them. Having discovered a planet almost identical to Earth on the far side of the galactic core, the gods named it Khron and relocated the mages there.

In this novel, the US military is screening all their personnel for psionic talents. Derek Secrest has been brought up from the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School for the last round of tests and is anxious to return for his final week prior to graduation. He notices a woman with striking features and very long hair among the testees. The tests, however, involve drugs that cause strange dreams and a sense of unreality, so he wonders if she is a figment of his imagination.

After the testing is completed, Derek is told that he will not be returning to NAOCS, but is given two weeks leave, which he spends at his grandfather's home. Glenn Secrest is a former Navy Commander and pilot, so he understands Derek's disappointment at not graduating with his class. This common understanding cheers Derek somewhat, but he still takes long walks to think over his situation.

On one of these rambles, he sees the mysterious woman again, this time through a hole in mid-air. She is being chased by strangers and barely escapes through the portal, closing it behind her. She is so exhausted that Derek takes her back to the house and puts her to bed. When she awakes the next day, he learns that she is called Sophia and she tells him that he should not refuse that which is going to be offered to him.

Immediately thereafter, Derek has visitors who offer him an assignment with JICPO, but do not spell out the details. Since Glenn has served in the predecessor of JICPO during the Vietnam era, he forces full disclosure from the recruiters, including the name of the unit: the Joint Interservice Command for Psionic Operations. Glenn also informs Derek that he can refuse the transfer, but Derek is certain that he must take the assignment.

During the initial testing, Derek had met a Navy pilot, Lieutenant SG Paul Rinnard, and the two immediately became comrades. After Derek reports to JICPO, he finds that Paul is also there. Later they both meet Air Force First Lieutenant Lauren Westerfeld during the briefings and the three of them start hanging out together. The threesome seem to have the most powerful psionic talents in the command.

In this story, the three of them learn that the Titans have returned and are gradually conquering the descendants of the mages on Khron with the help of human imperialists. While on a JICPO mission, they are magically moved from their spaceplane into a Khron shuttle and disappear from the earth and all its environs. Then the threesome travel to Khron to assist in the battle against the Titans.

This story is a science fantasy, having fantasy elements within a scientific framework. Since the creatures from the Void have advanced powers, they appear to be gods or Titans to primitive humans and are very impressive even to technological sophisticates of contemporary times. However, the JICPO threesome are more skeptical than ancient mankind and so find vulnerabilities in the powers of these creatures.

Highly recommended for White fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of humans trying to defeat beings with advanced powers and millennia of experience.

5 out of 5 stars blending of mythology, horror, fantasy, and science fiction.......2003-07-05

All Derek Secrest wants is to fly, which is why he is flight training at Pensacola trying to make the grade as a Naval Aviation Officer. However, when tests prove he has strong telepathic abilities, he is yanked out of school to work for Dr. Kronenberg and a top-secret agency. Derek uses his newly discovered powers to thwart a terrorist plot.

However, the terrorist leaders are not normal humans, but instead are remnants of Ancient Greece with superior technology and magic fueled by genocidal human sacrifices. Their partners are even more malevolent as the Titans want pandemic human destruction. Derek and other telepathics join with the Gods of Olympus to stop the Titans and their friends. However, their new allies are also quite wary of human psi abilities that may prove more powerful than the magic of the Gods.

FORGE OF THE TITANS is an exciting binding of mythology, horror, fantasy, and science fiction into an entertaining tale. The story line makes believers of the audience that the Greek Gods and their enemies, and magic and psionic skills exist as Steve White provides powerful support to each element within the framework of the action. Derek is a delightful ?Greek? hero with a powerful support cast (friend and foe) so that the wide gamut of genre fans will fully appreciate a wonderful novel.

    Book Description

Prayer is more than just talking to God--it is an adventure in supernatural communication that changes people and their world. Supernatural Communication stresses the importance of finding a personal style and method of prayer rather than following prescribed formulas. Hickson's comprehensive guide covers every facet of prayer that the modern prayer warrior needs to know, including: developing a consistent prayer life; different types and styles of prayer; characteristics of a successful prayer warrior; prayer walking; learning to wrestle and wage war; the ''liquid prayer of power''--tears; strategic prayer for cities. This powerful and intimate look at communicating with God on behalf of his children will grip any reader interested in intercessory prayer, from national ministry leaders and prayer warriors to the quiet intercessor at home.

      Book Description

This book is an account of the author's personal journey through healing and into a healing ministry. With a simple and down-to-earth style, the author demystifies the idea of healing the sick through prayer. His goal is to encourage others to use the power of prayer as a main line of defense. He explains the basic theology of healing and how to pray for yourself and others. There is also a section that discusses the times when God does not heal. Should we always expect healing? This introduction to the subject of prayer and healing balances the miraculous with the practical and draws from such well-know sources as John Wimber, Francis McNutt, Smith Wigglesworth, and others. Many personal stories included.

Each of us chooses a different path in our search for a deep relationship with God. Some of us find joy in sacred music or dance. Others prefer silence and meditation, or imitating other holy people, or communing with nature. Throughout history the approaches to prayer have been as many and varied as those who made the journey undertake the spiritual journey. The one constant, though, has been that all the paths spring from the multiple intelligences people possess and through which they learn and communicate best. In clear, insightful prose rich with real-life examples, Bernadette Stankard discusses these intelligences and how they enable us to pray “as we are” and so develop a deeper friendship and intimacy with the God whose love transforms us. Prayer and Multiple Intelligences is a must-read for every person seeking their own unique, intense way of relating to God.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Perspective on Prayer.......2005-09-17

Ms. Stankard writes in a comfortable, inviting style that speaks to the reader as a friend. I found the engaging suggestions for infusing one's life with prayer empowering; as I read the story of her struggles with prayer I was able to move past my own struggles to strengthen my own faith. Reading "Who I Am is How I Pray" has made a major impact on my personal understanding of prayer. The suggested activities in the book will be of great value as I work on faith developement with children.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiration in using our intelligence to pray!.......2005-08-15

As a religious educator, I am very grateful for Bernadette Stankard's book "Prayer and Multiple Intelligences". This book provides an amazing array of creative yet practical ways to pray using one's individual strengths of intelligence. The book is well researched, yet easy to read.
The author uses a multitude of examples from her own life and from contemporary culture to explain the nine kinds of intelligence and to give prayer experiences meaning and depth.
This book is beneficial for individuals, classrooms, or prayer groups, which desire a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. It is a clear guide to meeting God through the individual gifts with which God has blessed each of us. If you are sincerely seeking a personal connection with your Creator, I would highly recommend reading this book and putting into practice its insightful prayer practices.

        Book Description

Volume 2: Practical Training In The Lost Art Of Healing Prayer relies on the biblical foundation laid in Volume 1: The Bible Speaks To The Sick And Those Who Pray For Them. Volume 2 is designed to train Christians of all denominations how to functionally pray for the sick and see results. Chapter Titles include: Foundations For A Christian Healing Ministry, Prayers For Protection, Cautions In The Healing Ministry, Developing A Ministry Team In Any Church, Ministering As A Team, Gifting and the Holy Spirit, Initial Contact With The Sick, Methods In Healing, Blocks In Healing, Healing The Sick As A Personal Ministry, When Demons Are A Block To Healing. You will learn about the gifts of healing, word of knowledge and the gift of faith. You will learn how to listen to the Holy Spirit, hear his voice and pay attention to how he is guiding you in the process of healing prayer. You will learn the three places where the Holy Spirit can be blocked from moving and healing and how to resolve each one of these blocks so that the gifts of healing can flow. You will learn how to detect when demonic activity is interfering with the gifts of healing and how to shut down demonic activity so that the power of God can touch the sick. You will learn how to work and operate effectively in a team ministry, how to discern the Lord's will, how to interview and work with the sick person. You will learn how to get pertinent pieces of information from the sick person and how not to get into any elongated discussions that waste everybody's time and energy. You will learn of the importance of drawing close to God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, so that you can be used effectively in the healing prayer ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Uniquely helpful book on healing prayer.......2004-03-03

Roy Lawrence has written a unique book on healing prayer. While believing in the healing power of faith, he is Biblically-based and he avoids the excesses of "faith healers" who ignore the will of God. He is also broad in his approach to healing, dealing chapater by chapter with guilt and shame, anger and depression, hurtful experiences, anxiety and fear, stress, envy, illness, and grief. I found his section on bereavement so helpful that I used the book for a prayer retreat and invited people who had lost loved ones to come, and they found the retreat very helpful. The "forgiveness prayer" that he gives is worth the price of the book. He has some especially meaningful suggestions using visual aids in prayer, through imagining bringing the sick within your "ring of peace" to pray for them, and in death imagining Jesus standing at the top of the stairs and releasing that person to Christ. The book is creative, passionate, and practical.
