Jane Smiley's game heroine prides herself on being useless, ill-tempered, and not that well behaved; in Illinois, circa 1855, a plain, penniless, parentless young woman should be anything but. Lidie, however, can ride a horse--and not sidesaddle, either--walk forever, write, and argue. All of these abilities will stand her in good stead when she and her new husband, Thomas Newton, make their way to K.T. (Kansas Territory) with a case of Sharps rifles and a desire to keep Kansas from slavery. Alas, "In K.T., it was often the case that every version of every story was equally true and equally false."

The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton is a Little House on the Prairie for grownups. Lidie's accounts of homesteading, from buying a new stove to coming upon the finest horse in the territory (and among the finest in literature), combine character, charm, and social history. (Smiley's chapter titles alone--which include "I Eavesdrop, and Hear Ill of Myself" and "Papa Is Cordial"--are worth the price of admission. "Papa," by the way, is an aged anti-abolitionist who wants to marry her.) But there is also menace. Early on, for example, Lidie pastes her home with "leaves of The Liberator and some other papers that Thomas had brought with him from the United States. This, he said, would serve the threefold purpose of advertising our views to our visitors, reminding ourselves of the arguments to be made in the cause, and keeping out the wind. Every leaf, according to the new laws of Kansas Territory, was treasonable."

Though Lidie once conjured up paradisiacal images of a "(weathertight and cozy) cabin," surrounded by fruit-laden trees, pure streams, and verdant grass through which she'd dally, "perhaps in pursuit of a pretty little cow," their tiny home is freezing and their situation fraught with fear. The Newtons' first months are filled with the exhilaration of new marriage and the difficulties of life in a hostile environment. Winter kills off several of their fellow radicals and "the southerners" seem bent on violently removing the rest. Lidie unfortunately makes the mistake of finding the season more formidable: "The prolonged frigid weather made even the prospect of being hanged, shot, dismembered, killed or otherwise cleared out rather an abstract one. The possibility of being frozen to death was distinctly more likely."

In her acknowledgments, Smiley thanks David Dary, the fine historian of the West, and The All-True Travels is a superb reinvention. Who would have thought that a shipboard meal would be more like a pitched battle, or that--as Lidie soon discovers--sentiment would turn out to be "a cruel joke in K.T."? At a certain point in the novel, however, the historical and social fabric becomes almost overwhelmingly dense. But after her hero and heroine are ambushed by southerners, Smiley pares down the details and explores Lidie's character and conscience (as she is forced into a series of memorable guises), and her "all-true travels" take on emotional and ethical complexity.

Book Description

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres

"Rousing . . . Action-packed . . . A gripping story about love, fortitude, and convictions that are worth fighting for."

--Los Angeles Times

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK

"POWERFUL . . . Smiley takes us back to Kansas in 1855, a place of rising passions and vast uncertainties. Narrated in the spirited, unsentimental voice of 20-year-old Lidie Newton, the novel is at once an ambitious examination of a turning point in history and the riveting story of one woman's journey into uncharted regions of place and self."

--Chicago Tribune

"[A] grand tale of the moral and political upheavals igniting antebellum frontier life and a heroine so wonderfully fleshed and unforgettable you will think you are listening to her story instead of reading it. Smiley may have snared a Pulitzer for A Thousand Acres . . . but it is with Lydia (Lidie) Harkness Newton that she emphatically captures our hearts. . . . The key word in Smiley's title is Adventures, and Lydia's are crammed with breathless movement, danger, and tension; populated by terrifically entertaining characters and securely grounded in telling detail."

--The Miami Herald

"SMILEY BRILLIANTLY EVOKES MID-19TH-CENTURY LIFE. . . . Richly imagined and superbly written, Jane Smiley's new novel is an extraordinary accomplishment in an already distinguished career."

--Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"A SPRAWLING EPIC . . . A garrulous, nights-by-the-hearth narrative not unlike those classics of the period it emulates. In following a rebellious young woman of 1855 into Kansas Territory and beyond, the novel is so persuasively authentic that it reads like a forgotten document from the days of Twain and Stowe."

--The Boston Sunday Globe

"CONSISTENTLY ENTERTAINING, FILLED WITH ACTION AND IDEAS."

--The New York Times Book Review

"ENGAGING . . . [A] HARROWING ADVENTURE . . . This picaresque tale presents a series of remarkable characters, particularly in the inexperienced narrator, whose graphic descriptions of travel and domestic life before the Civil War strip away romantic notions of simpler times. . . . Smiley has created an authentic voice in this struggle of a young woman to live simply amid a swirl of deadly antagonism."

--The Christian Science Monitor

"A fine historical novel that describes a fascinating time and place . . . It is both funny and subtle, rich in ideas . . . Smiley has created a better all-around piece of fiction than any of her previous work, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Thousand Acres."

--The Wall Street Journal

"Smiley is a writer of rare versatility who travels widely in her creative endeavors. She proved her mastery of both short fiction and the novel with three sterling works ( The Age of Grief, Ordinary Love and Good Will, and A Thousand Acres); her fondness for history had already been established with The Greelanders. In 1995, she successfully extended her repertoire to comedy with the hilarious academic satire Moo. What her new novel shares with all these works is its authorial intelligence."

--The Boston Sunday Globe

"Jane Smiley is nothing if not protean, a literary ventriloquist of incredible range. . . . This is a novel that manages to combine the evocative storyteller's voice with the moviemaker's sense of drama and visuals, an old-fashioned tale told with contemporary steam and panache."

--The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Not only is this a rollicking feminist tale of a woman who can handle herself in the thick of the Kansas Wars, The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton is also a coming of age story as well as a lasting portrait of the genuinely tumultuous time just before the Civil War."

--The Raleigh News & Observer

"A tale of love and war, revenge and betrayal, Smiley's fictional memoir invites comparisons with Gone with the Wind, even War and Peace. . . . Lidie Newton has the ring of honesty and truth. It also carries the stamp of its author's historical sense, stylistic verve, and moral passion."

--St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Full of the same arresting authenticity of detail that carried A Thousand Acres."

--New York Daily News

"LIDIE IS AN UNFORGETTABLE CHARACTER . . .
The All-True Travels is a showcase for Smiley's range and dexterity, dead-on in its emotional impact and resonant in the painful truths it conveys."

--San Diego Union-Tribune

"Rendered in sharply lucid prose and filled with wonderful period detail . . . Lidie's story reads like a long and various dream, brightly colored and brilliantly observed--a journey into a world as troubled, ambiguous, and full of life as our own."

--Chicago Tribune

"An adventure story, full of suspense, near-misses, and coincidence . . . The first and sustaining marvel of [Smiley's] new novel is Lydia Newton's voice: grounded in 19th-century reserve, yet honest, self-aware, and curious."

--Toronto Globe & Mail

"Smiley nabbed a Pulitzer for A Thousand Acres. This stunning new effort should win equally thunderous acclaim."

--Mademoiselle

"An immensely appealing heroine, a historical setting conveyed with impressive fidelity and a charming and poignant love story make Smiley's new novel a sure candidate for bestseller longevity. . . . Propelled by Lidie's spirited voice, this narrative is packed with drama, irony, historical incident, moral ambiguities, and the perception of human frailty. . . . This novel performs all the functions of superior fiction: in reading one woman's moving story, we understand an historical epoch, the social and political conditions that produced it, and the psychological, moral, and economic motivations of the people who incited and endured its violent confrontations."

--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Gloriously detailed and brilliantly told, this is a hugely entertaining, illuminating, and sagacious vision of a time of profound moral and political conflict, and of one woman's coming to terms with the perilous, maddening, and precious world."

--Booklist (starred review)

"Smiley scales another peak with this bighearted and thoughtful picaresque novel. . . . [A] richly entertaining saga of a woman who might have been well matched with Thomas Berger's Little Big Man, and whom Huck Finn would have been proud to claim as his big sister."

--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"HER FINEST WORK YET . . . Resembling a cross between the writing of Jane Austen, Stephen Crane, and Mark Twain . . . A fast-paced historical ride through a defining moment in our nation's history as seen through the eyes of a remarkable woman. . . . Smiley's biggest triumph is in the character of Lidie. One can actually 'see' her growth throughout the story as Lidie learns about the ambiguity of human morality--and that true justice is rarely served."

--San Antonio Express-News

"Highly recommended . . . Trust Smiley to take a situation charged with both social significance and novelistic opportunity and ride it for all its worth. . . . Smiley gives us a rich lode of historical detail yet keep the story moving, so that it seems to flow by like a river while at the same time yielding up its riches in leisurely fashion."

--Library Journal (starred review)

"Like Cold Mountain and Beloved--and with more than a casual nod to Mark Twain--this sprawling saga by the Pulitzer-winning author of A Thousand Acres connects readers to the historical issues of the time."

--Glamour

"Our heroine is a horse-riding, river-swimming, plain-faced young woman with a distinctly well-calibrated mind of her own."

--The Baltimore Sun

"A long, wild adventure . . . Lidie never loses her pluck, and her story becomes both a rich homage to Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and a thrilling variation on the derring-do of Lonesome Dove."

--Outside magazine

"[A] gripping, epic new novel . . . The All-True Travels is consistently absorbing, thanks in large part to the strong, vibrant voice of the unforgettable Lidie Newton."

--Good Housekeeping

"Packed with action in a setting worthy of a Western shoot-'em-up."

--Newark Star-Ledger

5 out of 5 stars Reviewed as a book on tape.......2006-05-30

I purchased the abridged version on tape (5 hours) and found it to be quite enjoyable. The listener is treated to a ground level view of the politics of slavery in the 1850s and how violence based on the 'goose question' (code for the slavery issue) swept through households, towns and eventually the entire Kansas Territory.

Smiley's characters are not simple cardboard cutouts - some of the pro-slavery people are quite nice, some of the anti-slavery people are quite insane (she mentions 'Old Brown' and his atrocities and his actions cause some dissent in Liddie Newton's household).

Many readers have complained of the plodding pace. Although my version was abridged, there were still some plodding moments. However, the superb reading by Mare Winningham spared the listener from most of those moments. She is able to express so much emotion and humor with her voice that I found myself forgetting that Mare Winningham is a modern actress. She sounds like she is an older woman telling of her sad, profound trip through a bit of American history.

I give Mare Winningham a grade of A+.

The overall book gets a grade of A-.

I will be keeping this one for my history classroom as a recommended listening for any students with learning disabilities in reading who would be interested in hearing a quality story for my historical fiction project.

5 out of 5 stars loved this book.......2006-04-18

I really enjoyed this book; I was completely ignorant of the pre-civil war goings-on that were described in it. I became completely absorbed in Liddie's story and didn't feel that the book dragged at all. I hated to finish it, and it is by far my favorite Smiley novel.

4 out of 5 stars A fine brisk read.......2006-02-02

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. To me, it didn't drag at all, in fact I found it brisk. Every detail seemed relevant, and just the type of thing a person like Lidie would actually write about. I have to chuckle at the reviewers who say Smiley is too wordy and descriptive in this book. As a reader of Charles Dickens, I found that this book positively clips along by comparison. I wouldn't change a word of it (nor of Dickens). Thank you, Jane, for writing an historical novel that brings the pre-Civil War era to such warm and rich life.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT! "Little House on The Praire" for Grown-Ups.......2005-02-13

Another great read by Jane Smiley! I first heard about this novel after an Austrian friend's daughter told me how much she liked it - and that she was writing a book report on this novel for her American history class! I read this while down with a bad flu and enjoyed every page. Some of the comments about the book mention the slow pace of the novel. I thought that this was perfectly appropriate for the time - Smiley's talent brings you back and lets you imagine what it would be like for us to live 150 years ago; daily life was so much more physically difficult and repetitive. Still the people in her novels will remind you of people you know while you learn about another time and place from a woman's point of view. Great book!

One comment must be made about the so-called review by "SC" of November 5, 2004. It's fine, SC, if you don't agree with Smiley's opinion piece/political analysis of the red state/blue state divide **PUBLISHED IN SLATE.com, NOT THIS BOOK!** but criticizing THIS book for a political opinion published elsewhere is ridiculous. It is completely inappropriate of SC to leave this sort of negative and completely irrelevant comment about Smiley's OTHER WRITINGS when SC is supposed to be reviewing THIS BOOK!

For example, in my opinion (and in my dad's, as well!) William F. Buckley has contemptible political opinions. Nevertheless, my dad loved his books and would never mix his dislike of Buckley's politics with his criticism or praise of Buckley's fiction.

SC has posted this "thought-police" comment for EACH AND EVERY ONE of Smiley's books. SC's review has no place here - it is clearly contrary to the intent of the rating program.

3 out of 5 stars But still not sure what to think..........2004-05-04

I just finished "Lidie Newton" last night and I have to say I'm still divided on whether I'd recommend this book. I guess the best way to qualify it is that I'm not sure I'd suggest it to a friend, but I'd definitely like it if my daughters read it.

I make my home in Kansas City and so the historical aspect was particularly interesting to me, probably much more so than for someone who did not grow up here. Having a first-person account from a character as interesting as Lidie also made it more appealing. She's a great character -- more confused than noble, plain, funny, selfish on one hand and tender on the other, smart about some things and really ignorant on others. Jane Smiley knows how to write great characters and Lidie was a much better history lesson than any I remember getting in school. (I had to refresh my memory on the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Missouri Compromise when I read this).

However, I do agree with readers who complain that the book drags in places... it does. Those slower places may reveal some interesting tidbit but what could have been said in one page seemed to go on for five. The temptation to skim was really overwhelming, especially after she leaves K.T. for Missouri. People who are looking for a satisfying ending will not get one, as the book just seems to abruptly stop with no hint of what or where Lidie's life will be made. This is what keeps it from being a "five star" book and an unqualified "must read". Because sometimes I had to MAKE myself read it.

That being said, I'm glad I did. It really made me think about the beliefs and the behaviors of the people who settled here -- some, my own relatives. While most of the book is understandably pro-Kansas, anti-Missouri, Ms. Smiley does try to offer some explaination of the seemingly indefensible views of Missourians (and "true" southerners). The novel itself goes a long way in explaining the animosity that existed here between Kansans and Missourians -- a real life-or-death conflict that only remains today as the KU/MU college rivalry. Just expect that when you close the book for the last time, you'll be as exhausted as Lidie must have been at the end of her travels.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-10

This book was wonderful, it adds to the Black Jewels Trilogy, if you love the world of Anne Bishop's Blood realms, you will love this too. My favorite is the love story of Lucivar and Marian. I would definately recommend it.

            5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-06-15

I love this author, this story, these books. The characters, the story, the devotion. You walk away feeling you know these people and each of them become dear friends.

5 out of 5 stars I Got my "Black Jewels" Fix!.......2007-06-08

I am one of the many hordes waiting, panting for the next book in Bishop's Black Jewels series...this was a great fix that satisfies my craving, for now. Some great background stories - Saetan during the early years of his marrage to Hekebah, the wonderfully satisfying story of how Lucivar met and fell for Marian, just to name a few.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams Made Fleash by Bishop 2 thumbs up.......2007-06-06

For those who havn't had a chance to read it yet I highly reconmend it. While reading through the Black Jeweled Trilogy you don't think that there was anything that you could have missed. But this book really fills in the gaps and then some. The true understanding why High Lord Sadiablo is both feared and respected. How the golden spider became the Weaver of Dreams, plus the tales of Daemon and Lucifer. Bishop is a master of her craft, the imagery of her writing just sucks you in. It'll make you laugh, cry and hold you in suspence where you can't put it down. If you loved the Black Jeweled Trilogy then this book is a must for you collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up.......2007-06-02

I really enjoyed this as a follow up to the Black Jewels trilogy. Her characters are so well developed. I would suggest that you read the trilogy first or this book may not be as enjoyable. Be warned that this series is very dark and contains alot of sexual situations but it still manages to be very romantic. Quite a unique reading experience.

            5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2002-05-23

You would love to read this book if you are a science fiction kind of person. It couldn't really happen but it is cool to think it could. If you have read any of the other Dinotopia books, you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars This was an AMAZING book!.......2001-10-01

5 out of 5 stars Alan Dean Foster adds marvelously to the world of Dinotopia.......2000-06-24

It was a great book and I have only one complaint: I really, really wish it had a map at the beginning showing all of Dinotopia and including all the place names mentioned in the story. I loved the story itself though and Alan Dean Foster's unique ability to describe fictional settings and people is what makes this book great. An awesome addition to the world of Dinotopia.

4 out of 5 stars Good story line.......2000-06-10

"The Hand Of Dinotopia" has a good story line, but I did not care too much for the writing style; it was a bit too dry. The story is about two young humans, and a dinosaur, who go questing for something called the Hand of Dinotopia that supposedly points the way to a safe sea route in and out of Dinotopia, which is surrounded by deadly currents and reefs that can smash boats to pieces. The trio soon find something amazing in the middle of 'The Great Desert,' which is unexplored and unknown to all but a very few dinotopians. Before too long the group becomes larger as the humans and dinosaurs continue their quest in search of the Hand of Dinotopia, but the question is: do they find what they're looking for . . .? An entertaining book, good story line, and rather suspenseful, providing a mystery to curious and willing readers.

"How can I express through the mediocre means of verbiage what my heart has garnered from the Messages from God? Step by loving step, the lessons provided have gently guided me to a remembrance of how to create from pure love; allowing God to live and love through me beyond the limitations of ego. These profound communications, so passionately, consistently, and selflessly provided through the Circle of Light, have kept my heart on course as it has opened into unimaginable vistas of beauty and ecstasy. Without reservation, I claim this as the most critically important information flooding the consciousness of mankind today!" 5 out of 5 stars Review from a Twin Flame.......2006-01-23

I have been given the greatest gift that I have connected physically with my Twin Flame in this life. So I would like to share about this book from the point of view of an awakened Twin Flame.

I was a great "seeker" who was looking for the answers about the Truth and the Essence of the Human being. That's why I also entered the study of Philosophy and obtained my PhD, and also studied a lot of other Religious and Spiritual heritage. I was still left "hungry" until I met my Twin Flame. "Seeking" was not necessary anymore. We have also discarded all accessible knowledge:

                  * because knowledge has become experience,
                  * because we couldn't find any references to what is happening to us and
                  * because we've also felt that we don't need any other knowledge anymore then the knowledge from the Source - which is revealing itself to us always at the right time (all information is also accessible in the Cosmos - it is matter of intention and capacity of being open to receive it).

This book, Say YES to Love, God Unveils SoulMate Love and Sacred Sexuality was given to us as a gift. As I read through it I can say that it is the most precious gift I can imagine. This is the first book that confirmed our experiences, and I can say also that it is the most powerful and mystical book I have ever read. You will get so much from it by reading through because the Truth you will read has the most powerful vibration and the most pure Wisdom. For me it represents the Holy Bible of the 21st. century. The old Holy Bible was written 2000 years ago. The consciousness has changed during this time a lot and we are blessed now that we have received God's words in so direct, precise and revolutionary a way. It is a MUST for all the "seekers of Wisdom" and followers of "the Path of the Heart." It is a MUST for all Twin Flames and all that are in a process of searching for/connecting with their Twin Flame. I recommend it for reading most passionately!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual for Locating Your Soul Mate or Twin Flame.......2005-11-15

This is a beautiful book which explains what the whole soul mate/twin flame phenomenon is about. The authors say that our twin flame or soul mate is the other half of ourselves. [Both terms are used interchangeably here. There is a difference. There are several possible soul mates, but only one twin flame, as I understand it] The two of us together make up one cell of God's heart. I love this analogy, as I have always seen our souls as cells of God, too.

What is new in this book Yael Powell channels, is that when twin flames come together in a sexual way, there is an atomic energy in the cells that gets released. This atomic energy is ecstatic Love, and as we know, that is a powerful force in this Universe. Love is the glue that holds the Universe together and it has the power to totally transform our world.

Relationship has always been one of the best methods for personal growth, although it has generally been more or less challenging for the majority of souls. It forces a mirror to our inner selves, and that exposure of our shadows, flaws, and insecurities has not always been something we wished to see. As we evolve and clear ourselves we become more capable of being with the other part of ourselves, instead of being freaked out at the intimacy of being really known.

As soul mates and twin flames find each other, there will be a massive shift towards love and compassion in our world. This book contributes to this new way of being. Instead of it being highly unusual to have twin flame union, as it has generally been in the past, it will become the norm very soon.

And to my twin flame---I know you are out there. Find each other soon?!?

AND, all of the wisdom about the Twin Flame/SoulMate is a great gift for anyone who wants to understand their own life's love stories. It's all one love story really. Read this book. You'll see. And your heart will be at peace. Thank you and much love to Circle of Light Center.
