Book Description
Eden Robinson's first book, a collection of stories titled Traplines, earned high praise from critics: "Expertly rendered" (New York Times Book Review), and "Captured my attention and permeated my subconscious" (Toronto Globe and Mail). The book was named a New York Times Notable and won the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize from the Royal Society of Literature.
Robinson's mastery is confirmed in Monkey Beach, the first full-length work of fiction by a Haisla writer and an unforgettable story set in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. This powerful novel reminds us that places, as much as people, have stories to tell.
Five hundred miles north of Vancouver is Kitamaat, an Indian reservation in the homeland of the Haisla people. Growing up a tough, wild tomboy, swimming, fighting, and fishing in a remote village where the land slips into the green ocean on the edge of the world, Lisamarie has always been different. Visited by ghosts and shapeshifters, tormented by premonitions, she can't escape the sense that something terrible is waiting for her. She recounts her enchanted yet scarred life as she journeys in her speedboat up the frigid waters of the Douglas Channel. She is searching for her brother, dead by drowning, and in her own way running as fast as she can toward danger.
Circling her brother's tragic death are the remarkable characters that make up her family: Lisamarie's parents, struggling to join their Haisla heritage with Western ways; Uncle Mick, a Native rights activist and devoted Elvis fan; and the headstrong Ma-ma-oo (Haisla for "grandmother"), a guardian of tradition.
Haunting, funny, and vividly poignant, Monkey Beach gives full scope to Robinson's startling ability to make bedfellows of comedy and the dark underside of life. Informed as much by its lush living wilderness as by the humanity of its colorful characters, Monkey Beach is a profoundly moving story about childhood and the pain of growing older--a multilayered tale of family grief and redemption.

Lisamarie Hill, the protagonist of Eden Robinson's coming-of-age novel Monkey Beach, is a terror. She'll run out of an evacuating car to get a better view of a tidal wave. She'll drag you unconscious to a deserted island with nothing but cigarettes, marshmallows, and the need to get you talking. Whatever her age, she'll ask awkward questions.
Set in the coastal Haisla village of Kitamaat near British Columbia's dauntingly gorgeous Queen Charlotte Islands, Monkey Beach is the story of Lisa and her Haisla community, including uncles involved in First Nations warrior movements, industrious grandmothers with one foot in the grave and the other in various spirit worlds, and the long-armed specter of residential schools. The path to adulthood (and you risk a bloody nose if you call Lisa an adult) for Lisa and her friends is beset by the dangers of substance abuse and family violence but sprinkled with hopes as varied as Olympic gold or, sadly, a "really great truck."
Monkey Beach succeeds as a novel of voice. Narrator and hero Lisa is whip-smart and ever cracking-wise: "The sky, one sheet of pissing greyness, stretches low across the horizon." Plot, however, doesn't come off so naturally. The Big Horrible Event at the story's end seems produced by page count alone, not by character. Voice and character do carry the novel, but the plot feels microwaved where it should be slow-roasted. --Darryl Whetter

Powerful, Dark and Edgy.......2006-02-04
Robinson's psychologically intense novel pulls you into a world of mystery, family heartache and fragmentation, and the magic of nature and spirit. Is she hinting at Shamanistc rites with LisaMarie's abilities to interact with the magic little man who foretells the future? The Crows who speak to her as well as the dreams she learns to understand? Through the deft use of narrative shift, weaving her way back and forth through time, Robinson takes us on a journey of the human spirit seeking redemption and healing.
This novel brings one to the brink of despair and back again, tantilizing us with hope while scouring cultural politics with the broken language and narrative take expresing the marginalization of the Haislan People. The magic of Elvis, Sasquatch, and Language makes this a novel of intensely bewildering power. Quite reminiscent of Beloved and Ceremony, Robinson leaves the reader haunted and gasping at the same time.
A must read............2005-04-25
Excellent book. I read this book in a few nights and could not put it down. I finished reading it last night and could not go to sleep for about two hours. I was still thinking about the main characters and the reality of living on a Native Indian reserve. The BC coast and Native Indians are so well describe that I often forgot that this story was fiction and not a real event. Can't wait for this author's next book. I will definitely read this book again and again!
A stellar novel........2004-11-25
Please don't read this book to fulfill your quota of First Nations literature, or to try to broaden your horizons by learning what "they" live like. You will learn a lot from this book, true, but more than that, you will be reading a beautiful novel. Every now and then when I read reviews that mention stunning images and spectacular writing, I roll my eyes ... it's hard for a book to measure up so that individual sentences can make me stop and notice them. However, this book does that and more. The story is lovely; the "supernatural" elements are sometimes oddities and sometimes everyday occurrences in the main characters' lives; the family is like every family I've ever met, loving and promising, but not without their troubles.
Just read this beautiful, bewitching book.
Captivating and evocative.......2003-09-30
Monkey Beach is the most original and entertaining novel I have read in recent memory. It was a suprise that, despite the less ordinary setting of a native community in northern BC, so much of the coming-of-age scenario was evocative of my own. Unlike my usual life, however, after finishing the book I continue to see giant cedars, mist rising on the water, and little red-haired men at the edge of my sightline. It really stays with you.
Engrossing Literary Tale of the Northwest.......2002-10-02
I was riveted to these characters, and to the skillful interweaving of past and present, and spirit world with human world. As a resident of the Queen Charlotte Islands several months out of the year, I found the author's descriptions of life here totally right on and fascinating.
I was confused by the ending, and I don't honestly know what happened to the characters in the end. That was terribly disappointing, since at that point I really cared about what happened to them.

Just as good as book one........2006-03-24
I loved Treason Keep just as much as I did Medalon. I can't wait to get Harshini so I can finish the trilogy. I am excited to start reading Fallon's many other trilogies.
Good, but not perfect.......2006-03-11
It seemed to lag at times and the characters didn't seem to flow as well the whole time. On the whole this is still a very good installment in the series and the authors ability to paint her picture in your mind is quite good. I enjoy the fact that the bad guys are not just warped and twisted, but at times just so caught up in their beliefs that they go too far. That is a nice use of real problems with humanity.
Treason Keep.......2006-03-01
So Jennifer Fallon proved she could write well with "Medalon." It was an OK book. But could she do it again? Yes. And she improves. Vastly. "Treason Keep" is far, far better.
She expands characters only briefly mentioned in her previous book, and already used characters are made multi-dimensional. And gasp! The characters also have faults! Not only are these characters (mostly) likable, and pretty much realistic, but the variety of the characters is refreshing. It's a new take to the whole magic idea, plus the whole fanstasy genre. Also, it features strong female characters with a pick of different types of males. Strong, sarcastic, sadistic, you name it.
On to the plot. It's very good. Complicated but explained. Different but not too 'whoa! What on Earth just happened?' I guess that's the best way to put it.
Besides, I read this whole series out of order and I still understood everything that had happened. Either way, Jennifer Fallon has done a wonderful job with this book and I applaud her. Get the book.
Better than Medalon.......2005-10-13
Jennifer Fallon has quite a good skill in writing plot-driven fantasy. In Medalon, she provided an excellently twisting narrative that kept things moving briskly while at the same time changing paths to keep you guessing. Added to it was a dash of political intrigue handled in an exciting and very readable manner that never bogged down the action or the story.
My biggest complaint about Medalon was the character development. Mainly, the characters all had their roles to fill and they rarely (if ever) stretched very far past their roles. You had Loclon, the handsome antagonist who becomes scarred and is filled with hatred. You had Joyhinia, the scheming mother who is a bad seed and causes nothing but trouble. And you had the protagonists, Targ who comes across as more altruistic than anything and R'shiel. They never really broke free of their roles and you don't see much change except the possibility of their hatred/altruism growing stronger. Not saying the characters aren't interesting, but as far as complex? There are more complex characters out there.
Now we have Treason Keep and it is even better and Fallon has made strides to help the characters. She also introduces one of my favorite in the series in Adrina. Adrina is a fun character and she actually has a definite progression in this novel that is fun, humorous and exciting to watch grow. But the best part of these novels is the plot and the pacing and I'm happy to report that Fallon keeps Treason Keep's plot moving quick and exciting.
Fans of Medalon will revel in the twisting plot and how things wrap up at the end, setting up the final book which I hope will be truly climactic. If you enjoyed Medalon, I would definitely recommend continuing with the series. This novel is a huge step in the right direction. I hope this trend continues for the epic conclusion.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!.......2005-08-09
This was such a good read and I totally can't wait for the next installment. I may even pay retail! Yes, it's that good. This is a keeper and is going to receive place of honor in my personal library.

Book Description
Samuel R. Delany is one of today's most interesting writers. African-American and gay, Delany crosses boundaries--generic (science fiction, memoir, theory, pornography) and academic (literary studies, cultural studies, African-American studies, gay and lesbian studies). Critics both black and white have read Delany as a writer who downplays his racial identity in order to aspire to universal values. In contrast, A Sense of Wonder shows how Delany's works participate in African-American cultural traditions.
The book begins with an analysis of Delany's Dhalgren, using the novel's links to black cultural traditions as the key to unlocking its puzzling content. Jeffrey Allen Tucker's reading of the four-volume Return to Neveryeon series places Delany's explorations of semiotics in dialogue with Frederick Douglass's 1845 Narrative and social histories on slavery in America. From there, Tucker moves to Delany's groundbreaking autobiography, The Motion of Light in Water, his experimental novella Atlantis: Model, 1925, and to his pornographic novel, The Mad Man. Tucker's aim is to advance a reading of identity that acknowledges its multiplicity and permeability without emptying it of socio-political efficacy and meaning.

A Sense Of Wonder: Samuel R. Delany, Race, Identity And Difference is an in-depth study and criticism of the works of Samuel R. Delany, one of the the modern era's most amazing cross-genre writers. Influenced by African-American cultural traditions, even though both black and white critics have interpreted Delany as a writer who downplays racial identity, his works range the gamut from science fiction to autobiography to even pornography. Extensively researched and meticulously written, A Sense Of Wonder is a superb scholarly contribution to academic and literature shelves.

When tragedy strikes, people desperately search for answers. Believers and unbelievers alike find themselves turning to God. Best-selling author and pastor Max Lucado points to the only real answer to tragedy and crisis: Prayer. In
For These Tough Times, Lucado helps us understand how to pray despite our doubt and fear.
Customer Reviews:
Readers in need of reassurance about God's love and power.......2007-06-06
I was hooked on Max Lucado's FOR THESE TOUGH TIMES from the beginning because it starts with a question from the Psalms: "When all that is good falls apart, what can good people do?" Questions are a time-honored approach to the mystery of all we don't understand about faith --- and the perfect way to start a book on the difficult problem of suffering and evil.
First written as a response to the events of September 11th, FOR THESE TOUGH TIMES has been redesigned as an all-purpose gift book that speaks to any difficult situation: the death of a loved one, the injustice of world hunger, a broken relationship. Christians have long mined the Psalms and the Book of Job for answers to the problems of evil, pain and suffering in the world. And what they've found, as Lucado has found, is that there are no pat answers. Rather, as Psalm 11:3-4 continues, we discover that God is in control. He is over everything. And when we have no pat answers, Lucado compellingly shows that we still have the knowledge that God loves us and cares about what happens to us.
Eight short chapters, plus an introduction and a prayer, make up this slim yet meaty volume. In the book, he asks "Who is God? Where is God in the midst of evil? Can good come from evil? And prayer --- is God really listening?"
Lucado looks to scripture for examples of biblical characters --- Joseph, Moses, Daniel --- who endured difficult circumstances yet whose tragedies were turned into triumphs. He also looks to creation as evidence of God's power and majesty. "Nature is God's workshop. The sky is his résumé. The universe is his calling card. You want to know who God is? See what he has done. You want to know his power? Take a look at his creation. Curious about his strength? Pay a visit to his home address: 1 Billion Starry Sky Ave."
His images are fresh and vivid throughout, whether retelling the story of the nativity or the drama of Jesus calming the storm. "And that was just the beginning of what his sea mates would witness," Lucado writes. "Before it was over, they would see fish jump into the boat, demons dive into pigs, cripples turn into dancers, and cadavers turn into living, breathing people."
Lucado points to scriptures such as Romans 8:31 ("If God is for us, who can be against us?") as a reminder of God's personal care for us. "You are protected. God is with you." Nothing can separate us from God's love if we desire it, because of Jesus, he reminds us.
One of the toughest ideas Lucado offers is that God uses Satan to refine the faithful and allows us to experience pain to come back to faith, be disciplined when we've sinned, or test the church. This is perhaps the most discussable portion of the book, depending on your theology of suffering.
He also discusses the terrible price of revenge and bitterness when we've been victimized in some way and invites readers to consider this: "Would you like assurance that God forgives you? I think you know what you need to do." He urges readers to remember to make time to listen to God, to be quiet, and to be still. He reminds us that "your prayer on earth activates God's power in heaven....When you speak, Jesus hears. And when Jesus hears, the world is changed."
At the end of the book, Lucado includes "Do it Again, Lord," a prayer adapted from one written for America Prays, a national prayer vigil on September 15, 2001. The prayer echoes his belief that "Though we may not be able to see his purpose of his plan, the Lord of heaven is on his throne and in firm control of the universe and our lives. So we entrust him with our future. We entrust him with our very lives." Readers in need of reassurance about God's love and power in the face of evil and suffering will find solace in these pages.

While this is a nice LITTLE book to send someone who is going through a trial or some storms of the spirit, I would emphasize LITTLE. It is also very simple easy language. For a gift book for a friend who is suffering, and may or may not know Jesus, it is a great gift. If you are looking for a good ol' Max Lucado book to spend some time with, look elsewhere!
Excellent.......2007-02-11
It is difficult to write a review for Max Lucado because all of his books are 5 stars. I never hesitate to give one of his books as a gift because I know it will be helpful and there won't be anything that would offend. Max has an intimate relationship with God. God's love fills Max's heart and it spills out in his books.

Professional medium James Van Praagh (Talking to Heaven) offers a guidebook for the living, which charts the course of the soul as it journeys through life, death, and rebirth. Beyond his psychic gifts, Van Praagh has a gift for simplifying complex spiritual ideas and writing about them in a conversational tone. Most appealing for Van Praagh fans are his detailed theories on death and the afterlife. For example, when people die sudden deaths, Van Praagh reports, spirits of the dead often linger over their bodies, unable to comprehend what has happened (but still able to see and hear everything that is being done and said around the corpse). This is why spirits of the already-deceased are so useful in helping the dead transition to the other side.
Speaking of the afterlife, or heaven, Van Praagh writes:
In the higher realms everyone is on the same level of spiritual understanding, like a symphony of beings in tune with one another. For some this may mean a reunion with members of their earth family. For others it could be a meeting with former friends and lovers from previous incarnations.
Finally, Van Praagh returns to his fascinating stories of channeling the deceased to illustrate how the living can stay on task with their raison d'être. If we want to help our souls along on their eternal journeys toward enlightenment, then we must remove the emotional obstacles that are blocking their paths, says Van Praagh, who devotes entire chapters to guilt, fear, forgiveness, and love. --Gail Hudson

Death is not the end!.......2006-06-27
The muslims teach that islam is the only way!and if you don't follow it,well, you will be condemned to eternity in hell. The christians teach that christ is the only way.And the Hindues have their own theory concerning karma and rincarnation.
I found myself a very confuse young man until I read this book.Because based on James' gift we can see that it does not matter what religion you are.It is simply how you live.God resides within us.Religion is just a way to keep order.Yes,there is a god.But if God made us all, everyone of us equal, then how is it each religion teaches this idea of "selfishness".
What I am trying to say is simply this(for example)...If the muslims believe that they are the only ones going to heaven, they why did god make the other people(christians, hindues etc).Surely god didn't not deliberately make people just to go to hell, did he?
Well, step out of the darkness.Understand what lies beyond. This book answers all your questions about the afterlife. You would surely understand what god really is,and heaven and hell. You would also see that religion does not matter. The name of this book implies it all.
And this book is divided into sections:
1)The journey:this deals with awakening your mind, getting to know you,Death-the way home,The spiritual realms(very interesting),The evolving spirit, and returning to earth.
2)Spirit speaks:In this section the author gives examples of his encounter with spirits and lots more for example:expectations, guilt, fear, forgiveness and BEST of all,LOVE...(you will actually understand the concept of love).
3)The awakening:This helps in remembering the real "you",Guiding our children, and the Keys to higher life(very important)...
After reading this book,I guarantee it that your fear of death will be eliminated and your journey of life will truly begin...
Don't get me wrong.I am a christian. But only because of simplicity.I don't contradict anybody's religion. And I understand fully that everyone has an equal chance to go to "heaven",and it doesn't matter what religion we are or race or colour. It all depends on how much we learn to love and understand each other. And with love we can make this world a better place. This is simply what God(the eternal force,Jesus,Allah,Buddah)wants!...
I fully recommend this book along with "Talking to heaven"...Enjoy the read...Nigel.

'Lord, teach us to pray.'Even the disciples had 'drive-by' prayer, failing to the take the time to pray as they knew they should. Christ is the perfect model for how we ought to structure a prayer life that will open heaven so God can respond to us. In Reaching Heaven, Brenda Poinsett takes readers through four characteristics of Jesus' prayers: Withdrawal, Thanksgiving, Honesty, Intercession.

Reaching Heaven.......2003-07-17
In studying about the prayer life of Jesus, it re-energized my own prayer life. The great need my Lord exhibited for a need to pray--oh, how much more do I need to pray. This book was an inspiration for me and one I will read again.
Learning from the Master.......2002-07-03
Brenda Poinsett has written a book, masterfully teaching us more about prayer from the Master Himself. The author has divided the contexts of Jesus' prayers into four elements and then broken down these elements again to aid us in developing a deeper prayer life with God. Key phrase: If Christ had not felt the need to pray, He might seem to us, especially in the light of His sinlessness, an impressive and awesome figure, but He would not seem close to our lives. We need to pray, and we will learn more from Him when we acknowledge that He, too, needed to pray. (page 17)
