Book Description
A dazzling fiction debut from the author of Mama’s Girl, Miss Black America is the warm and tender story of Angela, a young girl growing up in 1970s Brooklyn. Angela goes to school one ordinary day and returns home to find her glamorous and fiercely independent mother gone. Her magician father, Teddo, left to raise Angela alone, insists on keeping Melanie’s disappearance shrouded in mystery. As Angela grows to womanhood and struggles to understand her mother’s motivation for escaping the bonds of her family, she wryly observes, “My father was a magician, but my mother was the real Houdini.”
A universal story that is both finely tuned and elegant, Miss Black America captures the intricacies, pleasures, contradictions, and complexities at the heart of every family. Spare and finely told, this novel will seep beneath your skin and stay with you long after the last page has been turned.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Coming of Age Story.......2005-10-24
I thought this was an excellent book. It focused on the struggles of a young girl growing up with her father. It forces you to take a look at what motivates people to do the things they do and how the fallout of those actions will effect the ones closest to them.
It also took a strong look at the beliefs and values held by parents and how those values or lack there of, will shape the lives of their children.
At the heart of the story is a daughters love for her mother. When that love is taken away, the book explores the grief the daugher must endure and how she learns to cope.
As Always With Veronica...Perfect.......2005-07-24
An endearing story from an amazing writer. Little Miss Black America is an emotional rollercoaster ride that touches its reader from every angle. You laugh, you get angry, you want to cry, but you love its main characters and ultimate message delivered throught the story. For Mama's Girl fans, it reaffirms Veronica outstanding talent as a writer. For those who have never read Veronica, you will fall in love with her writing, and run out to read Mama's Girl.
Loved it!.......2005-07-12
I fell in love with Veronica Chambers with her memoir "Mama's Girl," and she proves equally skilled at fiction with "Miss Black America." Not only is the novel beautifully written throughout, but some of the pop culture references are laugh out loud funny.
A coming of age gem with universal appeal.......2005-07-08
This finely written, exquisitely detailed coming of age story may be called Miss Black America, but its appeal is universal. Veronica Chambers skillfully explores the delicate, fraught, often confusing and competing ties that bind daughters to both their mothers and fathers. The mother's dominant presence -- heightened cleverly by her absence --is beautifully woven throughout the story without diminishing the strong presence and influence of Teddo on the woman Angela becomes. Frequent interwoven references to touchstones of popular cultural throughout Angela's life --from news clips to fashion trends-- help place and pace the story in a colorful way that should conjure up fun personal memories for many readers. Miss Black America is a fast paced, thoroughly enjoyable, and ultimately uplifting take on the resilience of us all, because of, and in spite of, our families. A great read.
Veronica Chambers Does It Again.......2005-07-06
In her memoir, Mama's Girl, Veronica Chambers had me so spellbound that I finished the book in one sitting. She does it again in her first novel, Miss Black America, grabbing your attention in the first paragraph and not letting go until the last.
This moving story is full of glimpses of the 60's and 70's and glimpses into the hearts and minds of the people there. She makes you care about her characters, especially Angela Davis Brown whose sassy, irrepressible voice tells her story. From one scene to the next, the action is fast paced, making it impossible to put down. With such heroes as the magic man Teddo the Amazing Magician, Miss Black America and Mohammed Ali gracing the pages of this book, it is a terrific read that leaves you cheering the resilience of the human spirit.

In the Stone of Tear, the Lord Dragon considers his next move. It will be something no one expects, not the Black Ajah, not Tairen nobles, not Aes Sedai, not Egwene or Elayne or Nynaeve. Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Rand is now super scary guy. Generally, a woman named Selene is going to be super scary girl. In this case, yep. She is one of the Forsaken. Whines quite a bit less than the rest of the women they have to put up with in this story, too.
Perrin and Faile go back home to beastie's town, and the Aes Sedai politics get violent.
One of the Best of the Series.......2007-07-22
This book is one of Robert Jordan's crowning achievements. This is the best book of the series and one of the most important. My favorite character is Perrin and in this book he gives a lot of coverage for Perrin. It is one of the most important because this book has where Perrin becomes a lord and Rand becomes He Who Comes With the Dawn. This has to be the most funny of any of the books (if they can be called funny) because of the Faile-Perrin interactions. (Dry humor maybe). I have read this book ten+ times and every time I get something new out of it. If you are willing to read a longer book this may become one of your favorites. Though I do admit that the parts when the women are in Tanchico are some of the most boring parts in the entire series and I am guilty of skipping over them. If you like Perrin, Rand, Faile, Avienda, Egwene, or Mat, then this is a great book for you.
Love the series.......2007-07-19
This is my cup of tea! I listened to the audio version and am delighted to finally have the book. My imagination is smiling!
a good read.......2007-06-13
I am working to read the entire series. These are well written books that are a joy to read. It does help to read them in order. I have read several of the series and they are all great. The writing is really good and the style remains the same through out the series.
Love the books, love the reader on cds. .......2007-05-27
Have read every book of Robert Jordan's and one by one am collecting the audio cds. So far all the books are read by the same person and it is an easy voice to listen to.

shadow rising.......2002-02-27
this is one of the best series of books Ive read in a long time. the events happen at a pace that makes it hard to put down. I'm a commercial fisherman,Iread alot on my down time they are enchanting enough to take me away to a different world even 125 miles out in the ocean. I highly reccomend this series to all sci-fi readers. My one and only regret is that Mr.jordan cannot produce them fast enough.then again if he did they would not be as engrosing. My eyes and mind await the tenth installment of the series "the wheel of time"
Best of RJ Review.......2001-01-18
Having already read these four books and enjoyed them all, the tapes were also very good. The books were fantastic but, i could not read while i drove or did certain other tasks that required my eyes and hands now that is taken care of. I can now do just about anything and enjoy these great books. So, i do recommend reading the books but, if your a person on the go then this collection on tape is a fantastic substitute.

Now Jared and the ex-Shadow Club members are having a hard time shaking their reputation. And when the new golden boy at school is the victim of a series of nasty pranks, everyone's convinced Jared is to blame. Determined to prove his innocence, Jared soon becomes wrapped up in a nightmare worse than anything the Shadow Club ever caused.

Try this book.......2005-05-18
The book was a ok book. The boy was in a club that was not for fun or anything like all the other club here. The boy want to get out but he couldn't.So they start to hurt him and they want to kill him know.
Great Book!.......2004-06-24
I thought this book was great. It was much better than the original Shadow Club and is filled with suspense. Sometimes it may seem violent but it was pretty good. I would reccomend this to anyone who liked read the original Shadow Club or just likes stories filled with suspense.
The Shadow Club is back. Or is it?.......2003-07-22
This is a sequel to The Shadow Club. In the first book, a group of students who seem to always be second best and never first, get together to form a revenge club. They pull a Hitchcockian maneuver where they each play pranks on one of the others' foes. But then things get out of hand.
In this sequel, the school hosts a new student. He is impossibly good at anything he tries. He has bested all of the best. Now the best are second best. Then the pranks starts and everyone thinks it is the work of The Shadow Club.
Jared, the ex-leader of the ex-club comes under the heaviest suspicion. He must work to try and clear his name but learns that no matter what you do, people will think what they want.
Is it an impossible task? Maybe. But you will have to read how Jared deals with it and how everything plays out. It is a page turner right to the end.
I remember a similar story on Disney's Recess, but here Shusterman takes the hard and serious line instead of the happy-go-lucky tone of the cartoon. Shusterman is so straight in this book that there in not even a single mention of Ralphy Sherman.
An excellent book that just might be better than the original.
Creepy as the title.......2002-03-21
I thought this book, well, downright creepy. I mean- Shadow Club Rising. Already sounds creepy. But the story just backs it up. I can't believe the cruel and sick things that those kids do to eachother. To heavily dislike someone because they're better than you and to keep it to yourself is ok.... but hating someone so much that you could seriously hurt them and not care... just because they're better than you.it's wrong. i think that if this is really what kids are like today, than our earth has no future.
Beware The Shadow Club and Your Past--it could haunt you........2002-03-05
Having not read The Shadow Club (1988), I found this sequel able to stand on its own. In October, Jared and the six other members of the Shadow Club were suspended when the school discovered the devious doings of the Shadow Club--kids who were always second best in the student body.
It's February now, and Jared has changed his ways. The problem is no one believes him. When Alec Smartz ("It was one of those cruel parental jokes a that would be an eternal mystery. But then on the other hand, it was so obvious that only a moron who try to take advantage of it. Whenever someone called him "Smart Alec," he would say .... 'Gee that's clever...'") comes to school and is perfect at everything, the student body takes note.
Practical jokes start to plague Alec, and all fingers point to Jared. Jared tries to re-convene the Shadow Club in an effort to find the source of these attacks but the six other members want to stay as far away from their previous deeds. Jared is on his own. As the practical jokes get worse and worse, Jared discovers that sometimes telling the truth isn't enough. The Shadow Club has taken on a life of its own.
I don't want to give away the important aspects of the story, so I will jump past the exciting and surprise ending and say that I found "Shadow Club Rising" a great and believable story. Many authors would have gone over the top and made this a tall tale, but Shusterman respects his characters. I love books that feature mean kids at this age level. It is so much a part of the daily life of a junior high student. The relationship Jared has with his guidance counselor is credible. It's good to see adults who aren't caricatures.

The Alienated Academy: Culture and Politics in Republican China, 1919-1937 (Harvard East Asian Monographs)
ASIN: 0521822211 |
Book Description
Rejecting conventional demands, this book examines how ordinary men and women, Chinese as well as foreign, endured the Japanese military assault and occupation of Shanghai during the Chinese War of Resistance (1937-1945). Instead of presenting their stories in terms of heroic resistance versus shameful collaboration with the enemy, the volume reveals how the city's dwellers mobilized a variety of social networks to circumvent enemy strictures. They employed strategies that kept alive a culture and an economy that were vital to the survival of the brutalized population.

One of the early "revisionists".......2002-06-01
I read this book in the late 80s when I was majoring in Japan Studies in the university. At that time, the Edwin Reischaur crowd dominated everything about Japan. In Edwin's theory, it was wonderful, the Japanese loved Americans, practiced free trade and believed in pretty much the same things as Americans. It was just a wonderful, equal relationship. Jared's was one of the first books I read that dispelled that nonsense. Written by a man fluent in Japanese, who had gone to school in Japan and had no political points to make by sugarcoating everything.
You'll learn just how "different" the Japanese veiw themselves from the rest of the world, you learn of Japanese discrimination and racism, and you'll learn how being a heirarchical society results in viewing others as inferiors or superiors and how this veiw affects Japan's view of itself vs the rest of Asia, and other countries. ( THis information was very valuable and extremly accurate when I went to Japan to live for several years in the early 90s.) You'll learn that the term "gaijin" does not simploy mean foreigner. You'll learn a lot of things about what the Japanese are like and what it is like to live here.
The trade info is now out of date, but the ideas are still valid.
An accurate assessment of a fascinating country.......1999-09-04
Having lived in Japan for about one year on a cultural and language exchange last year, I found this book really interesting. It put a lot of the small cultural differences in perspective for me, and after a couple of pages of reading, I was quite engrossed and couldn't put it down until I had finished. Japan is so different to New Zealand, but often I think I took quite a lot of that for granted - when you've been living in a foreign country for a year, you become quite blase about it after a while. The book firmed up my cultural perception considerably, and although it is now quite dated, the bulk of what it has to say is still relevant in the late 1990s.
I did think that the book had quite a strong focus on the economic side, delving into discussions on such topics as the Japanese corporation, which I don't have such a strong interest in, but I skipped over that part, and as a whole, found it an excellent book, which I would thoroughly recommend to anyone with an interest in things Japanese.

Well Researched.......2005-07-06
This book is well written and quite well documented. It contains some of the best endnotes I've seen in a long time. The author drew from several other diaries (often not published) to present a more well rounded view often elaborating in the chapter endnotes. My only complaint is that the notes were presented at the end of the chapter instead of as page footnotes. I was constantly flipping pages to access the notes as I read. Overall an interesting book to anyone fascinated with WWII.
Rising Sun.......2004-01-24
This book kept me glued to the page. A gripping account of a teenager stuck in a concentration camp without having done anything wrong. A surprising lack of rancor, the author gives a picture of the good and bad in the people on both sides of the conflict. Also unusual are the admissions of less than perfect actions on his own part. It almost made me feel like I had been there.

the second of two.......2000-10-06
This book finishes up the saga of Tarl Cabot amongst the Red Savages. *note* it is strongly recommended that "Savages of Gor" be read before "Blood Brothers". This tale starts with our hero deep in the Barrens, lands of the Red Savages and once again John Norman does a wonderful job of setting the local and discribing the participants. Like in "Savages" I'm struck by the majesty and pride inherent in the characters. Events unfold, this time to a climatic conclusion, and it's only through the presence of Tarl Cabot, who plays a pivital role, that matters turn out the way they do. On a par with "Nomads", "Raiders" and "Hunters". thanks

Norman gets back to his best.......2000-06-15
With Blood Brothers the series returns (albeit briefly) to something like the quality of the first few. Basically it seems that fans of Gor either like the first 12 or so books (maybe excluding Captive #7) because they like the wonderful descriptive writing, the clever plotting and the general excitement of the series; or they like the later books that focus much more on the SM motif. Blood Brothers is clearly one of the former and well worth reading if you have wearied of Norman's sexual fantasies and are keen to get back to the Tarl Cabot saga.

Book Description
“Research into spiritual development during childhood and adolescence has . . . yearned for the stimulus of integration, cross-fertilization, and internationalization, across conceptual boundaries, methodological divisions, religious traditions, and local interests. The Handbook of Spiritual Development in Childhood and Adolescence sets out to meet this need and does so with skill and with authority, by identifying the key themes and by drawing on the best minds to address those themes. Research communities and faith communities have been well served by this pioneering initiative.”
- The Revd Professor Leslie J Francis PhD, ScD, DD,
University of Wales, Bangor, UK
