4 out of 5 stars Good start to the cycle.......2005-05-04

The beginning of the books is really slow and then I realized I was supposed to read Rath and Storm first. Once it got going, the gook was great with lots of action and a great story.

4 out of 5 stars Well Written.......2003-04-21

This book was very well written and very original. Great plot and great characters.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent 1st Book!.......2001-06-29

Francis Lebaron wrote an absolutely magnificant novel! You should read Rath and Storm first because many flashbacks occur from that book. Mercadian Masques never gets boring due to the fact it is additive and has many exciting battles. Francis Lebaron developes Volrath into a more evil character than the ones who did in Rath and Storm. Oh, while you are reading this, prepare for lots of cliffhangers! You will enjoy Mercadian Masques, I have forseen it.

5 out of 5 stars Mercadian Masques - The last good Magic story?.......2000-11-18

Well, I must say...Mercadian Masques contained the most interesting story I've read since Tempest. In it you have nearly every story element that you could think of. Mystery, suspense, drama, action, adventure, comedy, Masques had it all. I won't ruin any storyline, but I will say this : Be prepared for many plot twists.

One aspect I fear about the Magic storyline is that it may all be going downhill. If you've been paying attention to the new expansion sets and blocks being released, you might realize that all of the storylines in these are based on wars of some kind. Not that is is a horrible thing, but we members of the audience need some variety in the plot, not just (insert Phyrexian bad guy here) invades the good guys. This may just be a rant, but I encourage you to take what I have said into consideration. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars A different kind of story...........2000-10-03

As most of hte reviews have pointed out, you MUST read Rath and Storm. The language is hard at a certain point and the plot includes way too many fightings.

IT's necessary, though, to understand the unfolding plot of the Weatherlight Saga.

BTW, I wouldn't have called hte Cycle "Mercadian," since the rest of the cycle has nothing to do with Mercadia.

    2 out of 5 stars A Steady Decline. Who's Really Writing This???.......2007-04-16

The third book of the Dreamers, Crystal Gorge, is actually worse than the dreadful second book; and that's a near impossible feat to accomplish.

The once interesting story of four Gods battling an evil being called the Vlagh is getting bland and horribly repetitious. What happens in this book is pretty much what happens in the other two previous installments of the Dreamers. The four Gods are nearly non-existent until the end of the book when all the sudden, they do everything--again. The human characters all talk in the ridiculous, overdone sarcasm that is boring and not funny in the slightest way (older David Eddings series/books were just not like this). The characters that are "hired" by the Gods do all the talking, but actually do absolutely nothing for the story--they only talk about building forts and about the weather while all they do is build and then abandon these forts when the Vlagh's servants attack. The story is about war, but there are no action sequences, and, in fact, there is very little mention about this war. The "good guys" always win while not losing any allies--even when the enemy gets smarter and stronger. There's too much dialog among characters that are ALL alike. Any difference among the characters that existed in the first book, The Elder Gods, is completely gone now. They all talk the same, try to be funny when they aren't even close to being funny, and they all say the same things even though they are from different parts of the world. Too much unnecessary italicizing, too.

This book is nothing new to this series. It starts the same, ends the same, but manages to get worse in the middle of it. Not to mention that the entire story is falling apart and is beginning to get confusing. The story mentions that the Gods are hiring Man to do the fighting because the Gods aren't allowed to kill anything. In the end, though, Man kills virtually nothing while a God (as in all three books, so far) kills off the vast majority of the enemy which leaves everything that is said and done throughout the book meaningless. Hopefully the fourth and final book of the Dreamers will bring this story to a good conclusion and explain everything. Nothing makes sense; and that's not a true David Eddings story.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Worry, It's not You, It's Them.......2007-01-19

I discovered David Eddings for the first time last year. I voraciously devoured The Belgariad and The Mallorean, and I was hungry for more.

I had heard a few things about The Dreamers series that did not bode well. For instance, it was reportedly childlike and the story-telling was stilted and uninteresting. These reports were not true. No: in fact, they came nowhere close to portraying the hideousness of the series.

As I patiently plowed through The Elder Gods and The Treasured One, I found myself overcome with horror. So many things in the series were similar to his first two series, which I had found enjoyable. Did I really enjoy reading such rot? How could I not have noticed it was this terrible? Finally, halfway through Crystal Gorge, I realized that it wasn't me. It was them. One could easily suspect that the book was written by a David Eddings imposter. The same jokes are retold again and again. You will hear many versions of the following repartee:
"Blah blah blah, wouldn't you say?"
"Not if I wanted to live, I wouldn't."
Funny the first time, but once you've heard it three times within a span of twenty pages, it gets a little old.

For every two pages of plot, there are 15 pages of rehashing and irrelevant side story which adds nothing to the depth of characters or enhances the storyline in any way.

For this review, I'll stay away from summarizing the plot. The back of the book covers the plot in almost about as much detail as the book itself.

Please, if you're new to David Eddings, don't read this series first. Don't read it at all, actually, unless you absolutely need to prove to yourself that this book is a startling and unwelcome departure from Eddings' usual writing style.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Series Gets Worse.......2007-01-05

Although I was thoroughly disappointed in this series so far I guess I just decided to make a donation to the Eddings Fund for Repetetive Storytelling when I purchased (translate: wasted my money on) this book. As I found out in Books I and II of this series this is just another version of a tale Eddings has told before with the same characters renamed. I am actually embarrassed for The Eddings as they have the audacity and lack of imagination to use almost exactly the same dialogue and phrasing for their characters and narration that were used in past Eddings series such as Belgariad/Malloreon and Elenium/Tamuli. I guess they are not too embarrassed to take a check from their publisher for this rehash of well worn, to say the least, material.
I cannot believe I spent a cent on this book after reading the first two. I am just addicted to Sci-Fi and Fantasy I guess, that is the only explanation. I will tell you this-The Buck(s) Stops Here. I will not, and I could not possibly recommend, that anyone purchase this book or any other in this series.
If you enjoy this type of light fantasy I would recommend some of Eddings earlier works such as those series mentioned above. They are not complicated and well developed like much of the fantasy works I enjoy more (i.e. George R.R. Martin, Robin Hobb, L.E. Modesitt Jr.), but they are light years superior to this series. I would describe The Dreamers as a "dumbed down" and simplified version of earlier Eddings works. Quite frankly, since those earlier works weren't that sophisticated anyway you can see where that leaves us-with kiddie books masquerading as fantasy literature.

2 out of 5 stars taking time with d eddings.......2006-10-31

This new collection of books by the Eddings team is not one of the best. It is filled with redundancies and seems just an attempt to fill space with words to sell books but with out substance.

3 out of 5 stars What happened to David Eddings?.......2006-10-05

David Eddings was my second favorite author after I read "The Belgariad" and "The Mallorean" novels, and even "The Elenium" series. Mr. Eddings works rivaled those of Tolkien, and in the area of character development, he exceeded the master. I still chuckle when I recall some of the banter between Silk, Polgara and Belgarath. I've read all of them several times.
I was very disappointed when I started reading this new series. The Eddings haven't created anything new with these books, but have simply changed the names of the characters and repeated the same jokes.
Eleria, the child goddess in this series is almost a clone of Flute from the Elenium series. And Longbow, Sorgan Hook-Beak, and the rest are too similar to Garion, Sparhawk, Polgara, etc.
The jokes are also redundant. Mr. Eddings used male vs. female banter throughout his books as a means of developing the characters in his previous works. But it doesn't have the same effect in this series. I'm not sure if it's because I've read it already in the "Belgariad" or if the dialogue itself is lacking something.
A third disappointment is with the story itself. I have trouble with the concept of "gods" who are virtually powerless. The Eddings' make an attempt to explain this, but it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. They also retell portions of the story repeatedly from different characters' perspectives, but there's no change in the story itself and it's poorly done.
I wish I didn't have to write this; it's almost like losing belief in Santa Clause. David Eddings re-defined the epic fantasy genre with his former works and added more character development then Tolkien ever did. But they show a lack of originality in this series that I can't explain. I hope the couple can find their ability once again in future endeavors.

        Book Description

"I was late to school, and that's all I could think about. I started across the field. And then suddenly a fire flashed in my face and the earth seemed to move beneath my feet. I remember a shower of soil and then nothing. I woke up on the ground, surrounded by a crowd, men and boys...no women. They were all staring down at me with huge eyes. Their lips were moving, but I could hear no voices. All I heard was a loud ringing in my ears."

Farah Ahmedi is born into the world just as the war between the mujahideen and the Soviets reaches its peak in Afghanistan. Bombs are falling all over her country, and her native Kabul is swelling with hundreds of thousands of people looking for homes and jobs. The sounds of gunfire and fighter planes are as normal to Farah as the sounds of traffic or children playing are to a schoolgirl in America. When Farah steps on a land mine on her way to school, her world becomes much smaller than the dreams and hopes in her heart. She begins to learn--slowly--that ordinary people, often strangers, have immense power to save lives and restore hope.

The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky recounts an epic journey. It deftly interweaves a childhood in Afghanistan, where the classrooms are naked chambers with only chalkboards on the walls and are filled with more students than seats (and no books), with an American adolescence, where teenagers struggle to decide whether to try out for school plays, whom to take to the homecoming dance, and where to go to college. In Kabul, they cancel school because of rockets and bombings; in Chicago, Farah might have a snow day. In Kabul, a schoolgirl wears a black dress and a white headscarf; in America, girls need the right jeans and trendy tops.

Thanks to a number of good people who crossed her path at critical moments, Farah is thriving. She may be haunted by her past, but she is no longer enslaved by it. She is actively enjoying the realization of her childhood dreams; she's an Afghan American, free to learn, work, support herself, and choose her own path. She'll graduate from high school soon and is being recruited by some of the best colleges in the world.

Farah is living proof that not only can the human heart endure, it can also thrive. Even in war, there are miracles. Even when limbs are amputated, we are whole. Even in refugee camps, dreams come true. Even when fathers and siblings die young, there is love. The Story of My Life is our new great American memoir.

5 out of 5 stars This book will change the way you look at your life........2007-09-15

I am reading this book with my class at school. I love it! I look forward to it everyday. This is a story that every American needs to hear because it is living proof of how much we have been given. When you realize that many people in the world have had to deal with the things that Farah did, the everyday dramas in your life are put into a totally new perspective. This book is real. It happened to real people, it teaches real lessons, and that is why it leaves any hollow fiction or fantasy behind.

4 out of 5 stars An extraordinary story.......2007-05-16

When seven-year-old Farah Ahmedi stepped on a landmine in her native Afghanistan, she thought her life was over. The hospital in her war-torn city only tried to keep her alive until German doctors made their regular monthly visit, airlifting the most crucial cases to heal in their own country.

Away from her family and culture, Farah fell apart.

Then, as she began to heal, she made friends with a German woman, who informally adopted Farah like one of her own. Gradually, Farah began to learn the language and enjoy the peaceful, beautiful country -- making it just as shocking when she was returned to her family two years later.

Suddenly, nothing Farah's family or country can offer her seems good enough. The little girl had become used to a better life, and she was determined to live it again.

That wish kept her determination driven over the next few years, when war ravaged her family and her home. Left with nothing but a crippled daughter, Farah's mother hovered on the brink of madness and wanted to give up. But Farah, who had had a peek of what life could be, believed the two were destined to live in America through a special program for Afghan widows and orphans.

After numerous obstacles - including 9/11 - the two finally get their wish. But their struggle is far from over, as they find themselves in the midst of a culture clash with the general American public. Farah's mother is still battling mental demons, and Farah herself not only has to learn to speak and read English, but read altogether, as her Afghan education had fallen apart during wartime.

Above all, Farah learns, there is always a higher power out there, willing to help you during your most desperate times, sending relief in the form of a person destined to cross your life's path.

This simply told story is a powerful testament to the atrocities that can be endured without breaking. Farah Ahmedi is one extraordinary teenager, destined to do great things.

5 out of 5 stars A deeply, moving story from a country of war.......2007-04-09

I got Farad's audio book because we have been working in relief and development in Afganistan since 1984. It is a well narrated book, an uplifting account the suffering of a child and of people who come into our lives and believe in us, love us and walk with us through the difficulties of life in Afghanistan, Pakistan and in America.

Farad, a young, Hazara girl, has lived an unbelievable life before reaching the age of 15. Her story is a first hand picture of the devastation of a beautiful country destroyed by war and ethnic conflict. She and her family were caught in the middle. She stepped on a landmine as she was going to school in Kabul. She was in the second grade and things went downhill from there.

This is a story of suffering and pain but finding strength to respond when it seemed impossible. This is a story of faith and people practically living out their faith. It is the story of a young girl who has a dream.

5 out of 5 stars Great and fascinating read!.......2007-01-15

This book is great reading for teeens through adults. It is an easy read - can be read in 1-2 days. The story is gripping and suspenseful and really gives one an understanding of life in turbulent Afghanistan and the difficulty refugees encountered to make their way out. My husband and I read the book and enjoyed it as did my daughters, ages 19 and 17.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book that everyone should read!!!.......2007-01-04

I personally know the girl who wrote this book. She is an amazing person and has so many stories to tell. She was given the opportunity to share her story because she has gone experienced so many things. This really is a must read for everyone. For such a young person, she has gone through more than most will go through before they are middle aged and yet, she still thrives and lives for each day doing the best she can at everything she does. Enough said...buy this book!

"Soul of the Sky" is fresh rain amidst the usual smorgasbord of weather textbooks and technical guides. Exploring the personal side of the weather, "Soul of the Sky" is a compilation of well written stories of human interaction with the weather. As a stormchaser myself, I particularly enjoyed "Only a Storm", an essay by Robert Henson about life under the moody skies of Tornado Alley.

The stories in this book will bring back memories of storms you have weathered throughout your life. And if you've never experienced some of nature's harshest weather, you'll get a real feel for it after reading this book. It was quite a fascinating read.

The Other Side of the Sky presents a glimpse of our future: a future where reality is no longer contained in earthly dimensions, where man has learned to exist with the knowledge that he is not alone in the universe. These stories of other planets and galactic adventures show Arthur C. Clarke at the peak of his powers: sometimes disturbing, always intriguing.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of sci-fi shorts!.......2007-04-28

"The Other Side of the Sky" is a collection of short stories by Arthur C Clarke, an author whom many consider as an icon of both classic and contemporary science fiction. Frankly, I never agreed. I always felt that his work was pretentious - "literary" in the most pejorative sense of the word, mystifying, muddy and purposely deep, yet without clarity, for the sole purpose of achieving the lofty height of being arty.

No doubt others may disagree with me, but when I read the opening story in this collection, "The Nine Billion Names of God", my first reaction was disappointment - "oh, oh, more of the same"! Why would anyone, even those with an abiding faith in their god, believe that there was some sort of deep religious or philosophical ramification to the act of physically preparing a complete list of the permutations of an arbitrarily selected set of letters? What meaningless drivel!

I almost closed the book at that point and I suspect it was because the next story was only a few pages long that I decided to try it anyway. And what a lucky choice for me! From that point on, the collection was a thoroughgoing winner with everything a reader could wish for - charm, characterization, fun, pathos, warmth, wit, depth, twists, humour, human interest, solid science and thought-provoking questions - all of this without ever stooping to being either mundane or, worse yet, snobbish and superior.

A few examples will perhaps to serve to whet the appetite. "Refugee" manages to humanize the British royal family in a most appealing way. "Special Delivery" explains some of the difficulties of living in a satellite and the physical implications of a jammed autopilot that accelerates a rocket delivering supplies for just a few seconds too long - a very, very small incident that illustrates the enormous implications of such a tiny event. "Cosmic Casanova" is pure space humour with an unexpected ending reserved for the final sentence in the manner of Jeffrey Archer's "A Twist in the Tale". "Publicity Campaign" is tongue in cheek and humorous but it is also a clear and scathing condemnation of bigotry and man's xenophobia. "The Star" could not be perceived as anti-religious in its tone but this tale of a very special and unique supernova should provoke more than a little head-scratching and puzzlement in those that would interpret the Bible literally. (This was probably my favourite story in the entire collection)

If you're already an Arthur C Clarke fan, I'm sure you'll enjoy "The Other Side of the Sky". If like me, you were unconvinced of his right to icon status, try this one on for size. Plenty enjoyable enough that I'd be happy to pick up more of Clarke's work and give it a try again. Maybe I'll even go back and try some of his other stuff again to see if perhaps I missed something. It's happened before!

        Recommended.

The Other Side of the Sky (1958) is a collection of classic SF stories and one fantasy. They range in time from tomorrow to a distant future.

The first story, The Nine Billion Names of God, is a tale of the supernatural, yet is probably the most famous story in this volume. A Tibetan monastery makes arrangements to acquire an Automatic Sequence Computer and two technicians to maintain it. The monks are compiling a list of all the names of God so that the universe can finally terminate.

The following stories tell of a royal stowaway, the building of the first space stations (and the founding of the Vacuum-Breathers Club), a wall with only one side, a future security leak, the end of the world, and the race to the Moon. Others tell of the non-invasion of Earth, the super gadget from the future, the gorgeous woman at journey's end, the most famous of novae, a strange solar phenomenon, and the coming of the Dark Nebula. This collection concludes with The Songs of Distant Earth, a tale of the infatuation of a native girl with a visiting spaceman.

This collection is probably the most representative of the author's works. These stories were written early in his career, yet subsequent tales usually expanded upon similar themes. Although the number of stories about the world's end seems excessive, remember that those were ominous times.

Highly recommended for Clarke fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of human reactions to advances in science and technology.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2000-07-06

I agree, Clarke is better suited to the novel, but he is also a brilliant short story writer. The Nine Billion Names of God, as everyone knows, is one of the best SF short stories ever written, and has actually led several people to carry out the exploits in the story in real life, so compelling is the idea behind it. Not to be overlooked in this collection, are such masterpieces as the chilling Wall of Darkness, The Star (which is also one of the best ever), and All The Time In The World, yet another great story. Also included, among others, is A Venture To The Moon, a fictional pre-Apollo account of the first manned mission to the moon that is told is such striking detail that it comes off nearly as a documentary (and a factual one at that). Regardless of what facet of Clarke's writing that you enjoy the most, there is bound to be something here that you'll like.

5 out of 5 stars A Brief Glimpse of the Future.......1998-05-08

The Other Side of the Sky was a great Science Fiction book. The stories of the joint moon exploration were funny and were not carrying "heavy" issues.

4 out of 5 stars Clarke doesn't play to the short story.......1997-12-06

While Clarke managed to keep a science ficton bond between all his stories, some were tripped up with their lack of length. The first impression you get is The Nine Billion Names of God. While it is a good first impression, Clarke can't expand as well as he is able to in an extended novel. The short story doesn't play to his abilities and the rich characterization he does so well. Other stories manage to be boundless in their explorations of science but the reader only gets a glimpse at the people who can enrich them. The fault in The Other Side of the Sky is not Clarke's writing, but his choice of medium.

5 out of 5 stars Great Parenting Tips!.......2007-03-26

As a divorced mom, single parent, mother of two --- I read a lot. This new book has already changed the way I'm parenting my boys --- who are just now emerging into their teen years. Great parenting tips! This is one of the most positive, encouraging, "real life" books I've discovered. Extremely useful for anyone who is in their first 3-5 years after a divorce. Very well done!
