An exciting finish!.......2007-03-31
I completely LOVED reading this trilogy. Getting to the last few pages of the third book I had to stop myself from reading ahead. My friends and I read this series together and had our own theories of who the killer might be and when it was finally revealed we were shocked. Reading these books is a complete thrill ride. Now knowing the outcome I am so going to read it again. I say everyone should add this trilogy to their collection.
Who's the real killer?.......2006-12-20
Who's The Real Killer!?
The Party Room "Last Call" is the third book in the party room series. This book is about a girl named Kirsten, who than recently had a friend die at the party room. There has been many murders at the party room, but she still drops in for a visit every now and than, when she's not in school. This is a good book because it always has you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next and when you think it all is over, the killer strikes again. If you don't like long books, that take quite a bit of patience, than I would suggest not reading this book. If you are a person who likes very mysterious books, The Party Room is the book for you. This is a book you should add to you library or collection.

You will laugh until the very end!.......2007-08-02
Kendra Claton is on another mission. This time she has to prove that her sister, Allegra, who's claim to fame is as a video dancer/Hollywood reporter, innocent of murder. Allegra is in town to do an interview with Vivianne DeArmond, a movie star from the 40-50's, who is still a diva (kind of like Betty Davis type) Vivianne has a secret she wants to announce to her fans but she is murdered and Allegra is seen running from the scene.
Kendra has enough to deal with with her sister back in town, flirting with her boy-firend Carl, who has agreed to represent Allegra, Rev. Morris, who is flirting with Kendra, and her best friend Lynnette, who gets cold feet five days before her wedding. Whew... that's a lot but Kendra is able to solve the mystery with a lot of humor.
Ms. Henry has written a very funny and entaining book. You will want to skip to the ending to see how it all ends but don't because you miss the good stuff in telling the story. Excellent read.
Peace and Blessings !!
A Good Read.......2007-07-11
Angela Henry's lastest addition to her series featuring the fictional detective Kendra Clayton was a very good read. While I didn't find it as engaging as her first two; I did find it to be a worthwhile read. Some of the charaters in this story were not as broad and interesting as those in the first two in my opinnion. However the story was well conceived and it was gripping until the end.
A Diva In Her Own Right.......2007-06-01
Diva's Last Curtain Call is the third installment in the Kendra Clayton Series by Angela Henry. Kendra Clayton is a part-time teacher and hostess determined to prove her sister, Allegra, is not a killer. Allegra is determined to snag an interview with former Hollywood diva, Vivianne DeArmond. When Vivianne is found murdered, Allegra becomes the prime suspect. In addition to Allegra's problem, Kendra's best friend, Lynette, gets cold feet and disappears days before her wedding. As Kendra searches for the runaway bride and evidence to clear her sister's name, she uncovers secrets that rival some of the best movies to ever come out of Hollywood.
Angela Henry has created a funny, quirky, and likable character in Kendra Clayton. Readers will be tempted to peek at the last chapter to try and figure out who-done-it, but Henry makes the wait and restraint worth it by adding interesting plot twists and funny scenarios that keep the story moving. Diva's Last Curtain Call is a great book for summer reading, travel or a lazy afternoon.

You Won't Stop until You Finish.......2007-05-25
Suspense, thrillers, mysteries - I LOVE them, and I'm always on the look out for a great one to excite me and keep my interest -- I definitely found a great one in Angela Henry's DIVA'S LAST CURTAIN CALL, the third Kendra Clayton novel.
In the novel, Kendra Clayton, a part-time GED instructor finds her spring break everything BUT a break. She has to deal with her best friend who's having major cold feet just days before her wedding. She has to, yet again, take the backseat to the theatrics of her sister, Allegra who is hoping to snag a major interview with Vivianne DeArmond, a screen legend. When DeArmond is murdered, Kendra decides to help prove that Allegra - a prime suspect - is not the killer. On top of all that, she has to keep the ugly, green-eyed monster in check when she sees Allegra acting way too friendly with her boyfriend Carl, who becomes Allegra's attorney. But Kendra can't talk - she's sharing lingering looks and a few pecks and kisses with a smooth-talking, handsome reverend. Just the typical INSANITY a woman might find herself dealing with when on vacation, right?
I have to say first that I LOVED this novel. I told myself I was going to read a few pages at a time, but every time I went to place the book down, I couldn't. I needed to know what would happen next, then next, then...well, you get the idea. Henry does an awesome job with creating so many twists and turns, yet never confusing the reader. The ending doesn't feel rushed; I don't feel that I'm being told who did what and why. Everything is strategically laid out to keep the reader anxiously moving forward to a satisfying end. Kendra as a series character is wonderful; she's complex, she's funny, she's gutsy; she's the type of chick you want to keep learning about as each new novel comes out. Another thing that makes the story so well-rounded and also helps to draw out Kendra is her supporting cast. I learned a lot about Kendra through the people in her life, her interactions with them, and their reactions to her. There were many a times I wanted to beat someone for treating Kendra unfairly...or beat her for letting them treat her unfairly. When I'm that invested in a character or characters, I know I'm into the story.
As an African American writer and reader who's always looking to find good AA ficton that goes beyond the genres that constrict us, I am happy to read Henry's wonderful mysteries, and I definitely look forward to checking out Kendra's next caper.

Book Description
"Last Call is the most deserving collection I have read in a long, long time and I am silenced for how splendid and days later my heart still aches from reading these powerful stories about the contrary lives of the beings we call human." --Robert Olmstead, author of Coal Black Horse, Stay Here With Me, and River Dogs "In a stripped-down, elegant prose, Blair Oliver's collected short stories, Last Call, explores the disconnect between who we are, and who we believe we are; whether success or failure, child or parent, it is a process of discovery that uncovers the essential bits and pieces of what it means, finally, to be human. Told with a wry and lively wit, these stories range wide and hit hard. It's the rarest kind of treat-a collection you'll want to read and re-read." --Claire Davis, author of Winter Range, Season of the Snake, and Labors of the Heart "Last Call studies fathers, wives, husbands, and a geography that ranges from the Rocky Mountains to the pine barrens of coastal New Jersey. This is a collection of stories that hunts down the subject of marriage like a wary prey, circling it, repeating patterns with variations, observing both from a distance and up close. Blair Oliver captures the moments we fall out of love and its root causes in these beautiful and lean short stories." --Brian Kiteley, author of Still Life with Insects, I Know Many Songs, But I Cannot Sing, and The 3 A.M. Epiphany

Terrific stuff.......2007-09-24
These are very readable, entertaining stories about the complications of love, lust, and family. The main characters dig holes for themselves and don't just fall in -- they dive. They lie and cheat but won't look at the answer to the crossword puzzle. Somehow it's a lot of fun, reading about it.
A must read collection.......2007-09-14
"Last Call" by Blair Oliver is a moving set of short stories that bring out your inner most feelings. His characters are complex yet we can relate to their lives. Oliver has an understanding of human emotions and the struggle of family relationships. A must read book.
Promising new voice.......2007-09-05
I encountered some essays by Blair Oliver in Yellowstone Journal and was hooked by the freshness of the voice and the honesty behind them; not everything ended happy or beautiful. Since then, I kept hoping to find a collection of those pieces. Instead, I found this, a collection of short stories that just might be the most promising debut collection in years (and with Nathan Englander, Junot Diaz, and Nell Freudenburger out there, these have been very good years for the short story.) The stories blur the line between the comic and the melancholic, often mining humor out of unexpected places. The characters tend to be men who have fallen in love without ever liking their love objects. They are drawn to extreme behavior and respond inappropriately to the stuff of life. In other words, very real people with open flaws. Oliver draws them with unerring sympathy. It is this sympathy that gives this collection real heart.
surprisingly funny.......2007-09-04
The voice in these stories is nothing I've ever heard before. Part of it is a sort of Tom McGuane deadpan--funny, where you start laughing at the joke three lines later. Stealing the neighbor's cat, paying for the roller rink with dad's rare coin collection...you can't believe these guys are really doing these things, but they don't seem to think them odd. The stories are also nicely linked, so that the collection offers development similar to a novel.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Lyta Hall's son Daniel is taken from her. She shows that, when a superhero, she wasn't called Fury for nothing.
Finding her mythological namesakes, she decides to put an end to Morpheus, the Lord of Dream. Morpheus is not without his own plans and defenses, however, but a promise made to a former servant costs him dearly.
The Kindly Ones.......2007-01-23
This is my favorite volume of "The Sandman," by far (I still haven't read the last one, so I can't say it's my all time favorite yet). The artwork is very different from previous volumes, featuring Mark Hempel's work, which is very abstract, especially compared to the more realistic styles of other volumes. Still, I think it was well suited for such an emotional part of the story, because the expressions and moods of each character were excellently portrayed.
I don't see why a fan of "The Sandman" would ever not want to own this volume. It features the return of several past characters, including Rose Walker, Lyta Hall and her son, and Lucifer, among others. By tying in virtually all the previous volumes, it can be considered the climax of "The Sandman" storyline.
It's beautiful, poetic, heart-wrenching, and colorful; a masterpiece I can't help but flip through every time I pick it up.
Don't read the introduction!.......2006-08-22
A friend bought me the first Sandman book a few weeks ago, and upon finishing it, I immediately went out and bought the entire rest of the series. They are all wonderful, but this one is my favorite. It ties together all of the other story arcs - both the larger arcs and the stand-alone short issues - into a cohesive climax that is gorgeously written and drawn.
One thing: DO NOT READ FRANK MCCONNELL'S INTRODUCTION UNTIL AFTER YOU'VE READ THE NOVEL. There is a MAJOR spoiler on the first page of the intro; I was so mad about it that I started yelling out loud at the book. In one of the earlier volumes - I forget which - the intro contained spoilers, so Gaiman moved it to the end of the book and wrote his own short intro. I don't know why they couldn't have done that here.
Don't start with this book; start at the beginning with Preludes & Nocturnes and work your way here. It is beautiful, mythical, heart-rending. And don't read that intro!
Morpheus Makes His Choice (aka Gaiman's Masterpiece).......2006-08-12
Neil Gaiman once attempted to summarize the Sandman series in one sentence:
"The king of dreams learns one must change or die and then makes his decision."
As Morpheus makes that decision in the course of The Kindly Ones, it forms the climax for the entire series. And, what a climax it is.
The Kindly Ones is the story of the various "enemies" that Dream has accrued during the Sandman series (including Lucifer, Loki, the Puck and the diminutive witch, Thessaly) as they, either through conspiracy or just happenstance, take action to destroy him. The largest threat comes from Lyta Hall who, believing Dream to have kidnapped her son, sets out on a mission to envoke the wrath of the Furies against him.
This is not an easy volume to read, necessarily, though it is maybe the best of the lot. Amazingly, Gaiman picks up characters and plots from almost all of the works that had come before (some just get brief cameos, but are still represented) and weaves them into one whole story that burns to a moving conclusion.
If you're a fan of Sandman already, I don't need to tell you to read this volume. If you've just stumbled on this review, however, and are wondering about it, let me tell you that the Sandman is one of the greatest comics, ever, and compares very well to other great literature in any medium.
Perhaps the best book in a five star series.
Don't judge a book..........2006-05-30
...or criticize a house until it's been completely built.
I was lucky enough to hear a discussion between Neil Gaiman and Marc Hempel about this book at Balticon 40 which was held on Memorial Day weekend, 2006. Neil said that this story arc got the most hate mail of all the Sandman work. Neil said that he didn't do any kind of recap while the books were coming out from month-to-month because he didn't feel it was necessary. The funny thing is that this Sandman collection sells the best. I suggested that people were too impatient, that they got the first issue of the arc and thought: "Hey!! There's this big hole in the ground!! That's not a building!!" Then, they got the second issue of the arc and thought: "Okay, now there's a foundation..but it's STILL not a building!!" The final outcome of the collaborative work between Gaiman and Hempel is proof that they built something that a lot of people like to visit.

TO THE VICTOR GO THE SPOILS....
And this Victor is fully capable of raking them in, a Bolo Mark XXXIII of the 4th Regiment, Second Brigade, First Confederation Mobile Army Corps, in the vanguard of an all-out Bolo strike against the planet Caern. The enemy is the Aetryx, shadowy, unknown beings who enslave other species with nothing less than the promise of immortality. As a savage, interstellar war begins, Colonel Jon Streicher prepares to lead Victor and the rest of his regiment in that most difficult of tactical evolutions -- a planetary invasion.
But D-Day turns into a disaster, and Caern is a deadly trap. Colonel Streicher and his command team find themselves stranded on the target planet, desperately attempting to survive the hellfire chaos of modern warfare, as Bolo faces Bolo-human hybrid in a cataclysmic showdown that will uncover unexpected truths, reveal hidden secrets, and even call into question the loyalty of the Dinochrome Brigade itself.
For just what will happen if the Aetryx aren't slavers after all, but literal gods who can make good on their promise of eternal life?
The Dinochromes are about to find out.
Customer Reviews:
A great disapointment.......2003-01-02
Being as longtime fan of the Bolo books, I was disapointed. The central third of this book needed severe editing. While it could have stood as a novel on its own- the endless feminist angle did not fit, nor did the extensive sociology (and again overly pressing a feminist viewpoint) just does not belong in this book. Nor does some of the somewhat obscure human relations (like the whole brother in law thing was a waste of my time).
The Bolo books are getting slightly stuck in a rut, but good lord, can we be spared this please and at least have someone write that has some military sense? Or an editor that understands the series and has the guts to chop out the amazing-astoundo-female-hunters-that-are-the-savior-of-their-race-but only when allied with human females who are of course much smarter then men due to their sensitive nature? My, how original. I sense a Star Trek script here.
There were some interesting concepts here, that could have made a great addition to concordiat history, but it was blown in this context. And yes, I do feel gyped for my $... Did anyone actually read the final text before agreeing to run it as a Bolo book? or did an editor OK it on an outline?
I give it two stars only for the first story which is the typical stuff we can expect, and the one or two interesting ideas in the second. Sadly, they were not well explored in a military SF way.
Maybe nmext time I will wait til the books hit the used stores.
Keith, oh why have you forsaken us?
Bolo versus Bolo!.......2002-12-31
The novel serves up great futuristic battle action with the immense, self aware, and incfedibly powerful Bolos. With Space engagements, ground engagements, and Bolos slugging it out against other run amok Bolo's - its a thrill. We even see a Bolo of the Line committ a mercy killing of another Human. It is a very engaged reading with constant action.
The ending? It fell apart at the very end. Otherwise it would have earned a 5 star.
Caern was once a human planet,.......2002-12-16
colonized during the Concordiat age. Cut off during the Melcon Armageddon the planet was absorbed by the Aetryx, an alien race who believed they were a race of Gods. The humans of the Cofederation Mobile Army Corps decide to launch an invasion to free the enslaved populace. But there seems to be a few problems. One, many of the people of Caern seem to be loyal towards the Aetryx. Two, the Aetryx seem to have Bolos within their ranks who are just as loyal. Three, the Aetryx may really be GODS!
The book is packed solid with good battle action, with savage space combat and lots of Bolos fighting on their own. Yes, sometimes the humans get in the way, but without humans the Bolos have no reason to fight, to reach for victory and to overcome their own limitations. Anyway the Bolos spend a good first-third of the novel on their own, fighting for their lives, before the humans even make land-fall. THEN things really get rough!
They just keep getting better........2002-03-03
How can you argue with a 32,000 ton Mk XXXIII Bolo Planetary Siege Unit? Veeeerrrry Carefully. Action, adventure, drug abuse and recovery, are there any bases Keith hasn't covered here? Well worth the read.
Take out the human element........2001-09-23
If there was no human element in this book, it might be 4 stars. It has a slow start. The star of the book,is Victor a Bolo Mark XXXIII of the 4th Regiment, Second Brigade, First Confederation Mobile Army Corps, in the vanguard of an all-out Bolo strike against the planet Caern. The enemy is the Aetryx, shadowy, unknown beings who enslave other species with nothing less than the promise of immortality. As a savage interstellar war begins, Colonel Jon Streicher prepares to lead Victor and the rest of his reigment in a planetary invasion. But the landing falls into a trap. They find themselves stranded and desperately attempting to survive the hellfire chaos of modern warfare as Bolo faces Bolo-human hybrid in a cataclysmic showdown that will uncover unexpected truths, reveal hidden secrets, and even call into question the loyalty of the Dinochrome Brigade itself. Should have only had the Bolo elements in this book.

Schneiders invites you to dwell in Jesus' words in order to know the liberating truth God is. This book makes rich and highly symbolic Gospel accesible to lay readers seeking to nourish their spirituality.
Customer Reviews:
Groundbreaking Scripture commentary.......2001-07-19
Sandra Schneiders is a dynamic teacher as well as being a gifted Biblical theologian and writer. Her refreshing commentary on the Gospel of John helps us see what very few male theologians have been able or willing to see. Her insights are backed up by splendid research and intelligent thought. Her exploration of the Samaritan Woman, for example , in the 4th chapter of John allow us to peer deeply into the real meaning of the text. This is not about Jesus' encounter with one woman. It is about the Johannine community whose members were struggling with their life situation, the tensions over roles for women and men , the meaning of authority in the new dispensation which Jesus has begun. Anyone seriously interested in Scripture should read this fascinating book.
Eisegesis.......2000-10-02
Sister Schneiders shows little interest in the text of the Gospel of Saint John. This is just a pretext to do a predictable feminist trashing of the Catholic Church's traditional interpretation of these texts. Sister looks at the Gospel and ---surprise!--- Jesus turns out to be an ecofeminist of the first order.
Not convincing, but sadly typical of the decline of Scriptural fellowship.
Written that you may believe.......2000-07-11
The promise of the subtitle of this interpretation of the Gospel according to John speaks eloquently to what Sandra Schneiders has brought to life in this well researched theological work. As she has noted in the text, one does not simply read the fourth gospel for it is in interacting with it that Jesus becomes real. For me the chief benefit of immersing the self in Sandra's reflection and research has been a deepened experience of the Risen Christ. I have encountered herein a Jesus who is truly the symbol of the God I only begin to know.
