Product Description

Brother Jerome's death came as a surprise to him. So did the afterworld. There were no cherubs, no harps, no fluffy white clouds. Jerome had pictured the afterworld as a traditional sort of place. Leo, Jerome's pet cat from the friary, turns up to say hello -- literally. Jerome is shocked, for he hadn't known that the cat could talk. Nor had he known the cat's real name was Quantuum -- "You can call me Quant," the cat says to Jerome. Is Quant dead or alive? Jerome doesn't know, for Quant still lives in the friary, yet he pops along, as if through an interdimensional catflap, to see his friend in the afterworld. What is Quant? Jerome hasn't a clue. And what is this strange world he's now in? Is it a new world or an old world? The Hound of Heaven is here, the Christian friars are here, but so are the centaurs and the Greek gods. And everyone seems to get along together just fine.

What a delight! Gentle and deep, this little volume made me laugh again and again while it explores the concepts in quantum physics, the nature of life and death, and art history. Highly recommended!

Robina Williams has created a delightful beginning in these two initial entries to the Quantum Cat series. They are written as Christian fantasy but will be welcomed by any fantasy lovers. The stars of this show are Jerome, a friar who died unexpectedly when he slipped and hit his head on a gravestone and Leo/Quantum, the friary cat who is also the tour guide for the other sides/times.
The books are written with a humorous touch while also addressing art, Christianity, mythology and questions of time everlasting. The word delightful, truly meaning full of delight, is the best word to describe these works of . Deep subjects addressed with a light touch.
It will be interesting to see where the future of this series takes Jerome, Quant and the readers.

Jerome and the Seraph

This is the first book written in the series. Brother Jerome is recently deceased and trying to figure out what is next. He finds that he is helped by Leo, the cat he had befriended at his home, the friary. Quantum, nicknamed Quant, is the true name of the feline who is to help Jerome traverse the boundaries of time and space to be able to check on his friends at the friary. He is not as adept at crossing through so he often needs Quant's help while stuck in trees or newel posts, trapped in dimensions he never knew existed. He hovers anxiously while his friends at the friary deal with their own issues. The Guardian Fidelis has tried to put his womanizing past behind him. But just as he feels he has succeeded a woman from the past moves back with a surprise that upsets his view of his future. The Brothers must try to figure out what is up with Fidelis while also dealing with their glimpses of Jerome, the Brother they distinctly remember burying.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional book.......2007-01-19

I really enjoyed this book. Its beginning is unexpected and the story well written. This book is at the same time warm, friendly and familiar and completely different and strange. It is also one to make you think, even though your conclusions my differ from the ideas presented. I would definitely recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars very interesting fantasy.......2006-10-30

At a rural friary in Britain, Brother Jerome slips and cracks his head open on the gravestone of Brother Aloysius. Jerome is killed instantly. When he wakes up, he is not in Heaven, but alone in a gray, featureless sort of place. The first person he meets is Brother Aloysius, who apologizes for the circumstances of Jerome's death. Jerome eventually meets up with all the dead Brothers of the friary. The "leader" or "guide" of the group is Leo, an orange tabby cat who wandered into the friary one day and made himself at home. In the other world, Leo is named Quant, short for Quantum, and can talk. Jerome realizes that Leo/Quant is not your average cat, if he can move between dimensions with no trouble at all.

Meantime, back at the friary, Brother Fidelis, the "boss" of the friary, has been spending a lot of time with a middle age woman new to the parish. When men become friars later in life, some are good at keeping their religious vows while others are not so good at it. By this time, Jerome has made a few visits back to the friary. He makes contact with one of the living friars, and is asked if he could possibly find himself inside the woman's cottage while Fidelis is there; just for a peek, of course. He does, and finds a totally innocent scene of two people at lunch. Whether or not Jerome can be seen by the living friars on his walks around the friary seems to depend on the cat, Leo/Quant. A lot of things seem to depend on that dimension-hopping cat.

This is a very "quiet" novel (set at a friary, there will not be much in the way of action). It has little bits of weirdness here and there that will keep the reader interested. This belongs in that large gray area of Pretty Good or Worth Reading.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Fantasy.......2006-02-28

It is said that the realm of quantum physics is not as strange as you think, but is stranger than you can think. It is also said that when the quantum physicists climb the mountain to a fuller understanding of the discipline they study, they will find that religious mystics are already there ahead of them having tea.

Robina Williams' Jerome and the Seraph (2002: Twilight Times Books) and the sequel Angelos (to be published in paperback May 2006 by Twilight Times Books) is a whimsical Alice-in-Wonderland journey through the worlds of quantum physics, ancient mythology, a modern British Roman Catholic friary, Christian mysticism, and religious art. It is also a tale about Leo, the friary's small, ginger-colored cat that is both alive and dead at the same time and who is not only a cat, but also at the same time a traveler through dimensions and time, a lion, and a six-winged seraph that beholds the face of God.

The tale is told through the eyes of the friars who live in the friary (and in its sequel, through the eyes of a rather surprised Minotaur), but mostly through Brother Jerome, one of Leo's closest human friend. The fact that Jerome dies on the first page after a rather nasty fall is a hint that Robina Williams has written a rather different form of a fantasy novel. And like any Christian fantasy novel, it may not dot the i's and cross the t's of all traditional Christian doctrine, it's supremacy of Christ as the only begotten son of Jehovah who died for the sins of the world is a majestic counterpoint in the sequel's closing pages.

4 out of 5 stars Second Time Around.......2007-03-07

I was pleasantly surprised by the first book in this series - 'Ill Wind' - and was somewhat looking forward to reading the follow up. It didn't take me long to lose some of that enthusiasm as I started to get the impression that Heat Stroke was going to go much more into the romance novel direction than the first book. But I persevered, because there is nothing worse than a reviewer that say, "It was so bad I didn't finish it". I do not care what you have to say about a book if you did not read it (now I will climb down off my soapbox).
Heat stroke did not turn into a romance novel, but continued the style and flair of the first book. There are elements of romance, and I would go so far as to say that it is the core theme of the book, but the story itself is about 'real' people living in a very unreal world. Most of the characters feel like they are alive. There are some exceptions. I did think the villains in Heat Stroke could have been given a little more depth. That and the cliffhanger ending are the main reasons I went with 4 stars, but I will read the next book in the series.
People who like the Charlene Harris `Southern Vampire Mysteries', Jim Butcher's `The Dresden Files' and/or Carrie Vaughn's "Kitty" books will probably like this `Weather Warden' series - and vice versa.

5 out of 5 stars Heat Stroke is Hot!.......2007-02-14

This was such a great book! I am into the whole Weather Warden series. You will enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Freaking LOVED it!.......2007-01-28

This is rare for me, because I'm usually not one to gush over a book, but I really did freaking LOVE this one! I think Caine's writing is brilliant. Just the right amount of action and humor, a little romance mixed in...just an awesome book. Rachel Caine is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.

4 out of 5 stars Great world, great read one little problem..........2007-01-15

I read the reviews after reading Heat Stroke and agree with the fact that this author LOVES to tell stories. Which, for an author, is a must but there were times were I felt a little information overload.Jo is a great character, David is provacative and the fact that he's not the only love interest always adds excitment. I look forward to the next installment which I'm starting later tonight. All in all a wonderful read. Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A bridge, but in the right direction.......2006-12-31

I enjoyed the first installment of this series enough to dip in for the next two. I will admit to a certain trepidation, given that the first one rocketed the heroine so far up into the stratosphere [at times, literally!] Without throwing massive spoilers around, I found myself interested in the new society in which she found herself, to the point that the main "Bad Guy" seemed like a secondary story line. I have no issue with this for this one story, since I feel that the story took the right turn at the end to maintain a stronger overall story arc through the next few books, I hope.

                          Book Description

More than two hundred years have passed since the Constitution was written, yet Americans still cannot make up their minds whether religion is primarily private, public, or a combination of the two. This collection of essays explores the unsettled-and often unsettling-question of organized religion's role in contemporary public life. Richard N. Ostling reviews religious belief and practice in the United States in a survey of the ever-changing religious landscape, while Robert J. Blendon and others compare the political, moral, and religious values of the 1960s with those of the 1990s. Patrick Glynn and Alan Wolfe examine different religious responses to the recent presidential scandal, and James Q. Wilson, John J. DiIulio Jr., and Ram Cnaan examine the rise of faith-based social programs, including the shift of private funds to social service providers, the role of black churches in the inner city, and social and community work by urban religious congregations. Additional contributors include Taylor Branch, Kurt Schmoke, Cal Thomas, and Peter Wehner, Jim Wallace, Glenn Loury, Richard Parker, and former mayors Steve Goldsmith and Kurt Schmoke.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for the new debate.......2001-03-04

The issue of "charitable choice" and faith-based organizations' eligibility for federal funding for social service programs is a very important topic of discussion in nonprofit and governmental circles, as well as among the general public. This book is a collection of essays from some of the leading thinkers in the field on these issues and others related to religion and public policy in America.

E.J. Dionne is a Senior Fellow in Governmental Studies at the Brookings Institution and a columnist for the Washington Post, and his co-editor, John DiIulio, now serves as the Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

The first essay alone is worth the price of the book and more. "God and the American Experiment -- an Introduction," co-authored by the editors, eloquently lays out the perspectives of the book's respective contributors and weaves them into a description of the history, the paradoxes, and the ambiguities inherent in the issue of the role and limitations of religious involvement in public life in America. Advocates for, and opponents of, expanding access to government support by private organizations seeking to address social ills are found across all party, religious, and ideological lines.

That last point is important enough to reiterate. Both President Bush and former Vice President Gore campaigned in 2000 on platforms that included expansion of access by faith-based organizations to federal support. Although the initiative is often suspected of being a tactic of Christian conservatives, the two government leaders responsible for its implementation, Mr. DiIulio and Stephen Goldsmith, are a Catholic Democrat and Jewish Republican, respectively. Liberal Senator Paul Wellstone is generally favorable to the concept, while Reverend Pat Robertson of the Christian Coalition is opposed. The book's introduction explores these unusual alliances and perspectives in a coherent and balanced way.

The essays themselves are a mixed bag of scholarship and opinion, of social science and ad hominem advocacy. It also includes some essays which are more tangential to the issue of faith-based initiatives, like the personal memoir from one of the religious counselors that former President Clinton asked to help him in the fall of 1998 during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Mr. DiIulio's essay on the history and characteristics of the involvement of black churches in community programs, and his colleague Ram Cnaan's writing on "Our Hidden Safety Net" provide both anecdotal and statistical evidence that faith-based organizations, and especially minority churches in inner-city neighborhoods, are the best source and only source of help for at-risk children who are often forsaken by secular social service programs. Mr. Cnaan is emphatic in his assertion that community organizations cannot pick up the slack left by federal devolution of welfare programs to the states; the states will have to increase programs and funding to fill the void. However, the void would be a chasm without the faith-based providers, and supporting them is supporting those most at-risk, which is the stated goal of almost all involved in social service.

The case against charitable choice is presented by Melissa Rogers, the general counsel at the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs. Her essay asserts that charitable choice is an unconstitutional breaching of the separation of church and state, as well as a danger to the mission of faith-based organizations themselves. The demand for public accountability could jeopardize many of the liberties enjoyed by religious organizations, should they choose to receive government funds.

The debate over the role of religion in American society has achieved decisive status twice before in our history: once at the founding, and once again at the turn of the 20th century. What's God Got To Do With The American Experiment? is evidence of its re-emergence at the turn of the 21st century and a valuable primer for identifying the issues and framing the debate. The issues have emerged in new forms and the battle lines are not what one would expect.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, highly recommended reading.......2001-02-16

What's God Got To Do With The American Experiment? is a collection of essays examining the role of religion in public life as played out in the political arena in a democracy. Answers to questions about the complex relationship between religious faith and the American democracy are obscure, controversial, and constantly evolving from generation to generation. The essayists examine a variety of issues ranging from the role of a spiritual advisor to President Clinton, to faith-based social programs, to the involvement of Black Churches with political reforms, and much more. What's God Got To Do With The American Experiment? is thought provoking, highly recommended reading for political science students and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in Church/State relations within the American system of democratic, constitutional governance.
