Book Description
A uniquely illuminating and hugely entertaining survey of a fascinating Indian phenomenon â Charts. Covering every imaginable subject these charts are found throughout India. Intended primarily as educational material, they also act as guides to morality and correct social behaviour and offer marvellous cautionary tales. Wonderfully unclassifiable, echoing naive art and kitsch, Ideal Boy presents an hilariously random carnival of information.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and Interesting.......2006-07-10
This is a fine quality book, and a well compiled collection of virtually unpublished images! Very good stuff.
Genius...pure genuis.......2005-10-17
Okay...so i haven't exactly read all of the book but there is a site that has a couple excerts from it.[...] and i think it is definately worth a look before you buy. I'm about to buy it because of this site. This book is obviously out of date and now is just sheer fun. I was in histerics from what i saw. The banana peels.... i never knew they were so dangerous. Buy this book and your definately in for a laugh.
Is it seriously intended to help?.......2005-02-14
I love these because they're hilarious. The health things are so ridiculous. Apparantly, if your child chokes on water, the best thing to do is shake him by his feet until he's better - and don't even dare speak while sharpening your pencil - you might just shove it up your nose. It also reminds you to "Never live in shaky house" I love it!
Does not help people.......2003-09-28
This book does not help boys become better, but rather encourages them to laugh at the illustrations. Maybe if it was a newer book or more contemporary or even more modern it would be better to read. But at it is, it is just a target for derision.
Technicolor weirdness.......2002-06-26
This is an amazing document. It preserves hundreds of colorful posters used in India to teach children about health, history, animals, and good manners. All done in an array of amazing primitive styles. It's a source book that every artist and illustrator should own. Big and glossy.
Customer Reviews:
Full of inspiration for the jewelry artist.......2003-08-15
I approach this book purely as an artist seeking inspiration for my own jewelry designs, and for this I give A World of Earrings five stars. The photography is beautifully clear and sharp, offering precise detail under excellent lighting. The jewelry pieces are shown quite large, allowing you to see all the details. It is true that the descriptions are placed in the back of the book, and it might be a little inconvenient for some to flip back and forth between photos and descriptions, but I actually applaud this design decision because I prefer to see the jewelry itself without distracting blocks of text. As an artist, not a jewelry historian, I have to say this book fulfills all of my expectations and is well worth the price.
A World of Earrings.......2003-04-02
The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photos that are exceptional in quality. I think it would have been helpful to show how some of the earrings are actually worn, either on a mannequin head or a real person. One other feature I found inconvenient was the location of the descriptive text , which is clear at the back of the book, instead of under or in back of each illustration. The reader has to keep flipping back and forth between the full-sized photo in front and the text at the end. However, it still provides a good general survey of ethnic earrings from Africa, Asia and the Americas.
Visually stunning, but..........2002-10-02
...as with the other volumes published thus far about the Ghysels collection (World of Rings, Splendor of Ethnic Jewelry), one is left thirsting for an accompanying volume of scholarship. Broad introductions to the regions represented and short captions relegated to the end of the book are what we're given instead, often without dates for the pieces shown. A gorgeous and inspiring visual resource- still one of my favorites on ethnic jewelry, for the sheer beauty of the pieces included- but a bit frustrating to the jewelry historian.

Dave Barry's humor speaks for itself. Barry on dating: "These are nonstereotypical times we live in, by which I mean that it is the responsibility of the man to ask for the date, and the responsibility of the woman to think up excuses that get progressively more obvious until the man figures out that the woman would rather chew on a rat pancreas." Barry on falling in love: "When two people have been on enough dates, they generally fall in love. You can tell you're in love by the way you feel: your head becomes light, your heart leaps within you, you feel like you're walking on air, and the whole world seems like a wonderful and happy place. Unfortunately these are also the four warning signs of colon disease, so it's always a good idea to check with your doctor." If you think you might be in danger of having a date, falling in love, or getting married, buy this book immediately.
Book Description
No book can guarantee you a long and happy relationship, even if the author didn't know about your secret hygiene problem. But the cover of a book is no place to discuss that. In Dave Barry's Guide to Marriage and/or Sex, one of America's most beloved writers turns his keen, if somewhat rheumy, eye to the institution of marriage.
Dating. "These are nonstereotypical times we live in, by which I mean that it is the responsibility of the woman to think up excuses that get progressively more obvious until the man figures out that the woman would rather chew on a rat pancreas."
Sex. "I'm afraid that we must talk here about sex in a very explicit manner, because we want to expand the Frontiers of Human Understanding, and also we want to sell as many books as possible to adolescent boys."
Marriage. "Most squabbles start with money. For example, you want to buy food, while your spouse wants to buy a thoroughbred racehorse. It's important, in these situations, for both of you to be willing to sit down and try to achieve a workable compromise. In this case, you could buy a thoroughbred racehorse and eat it."

Great Gag for Newly Weds, Great Laughs for the already married.......2007-05-15
I bought this book as a gag gift for a friend of mine. After glancing through it I kept it for myself. I want my Wife to read it but I don't want her getting too many ideas or too wise to me. For the people who have been married a number of years and whose marriage is filled with humor, this is a good laugh romp. Some Truth and some tongue in cheek humor. It tells you to not take life too seriously. A very Funny Book.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHH (etc.).......2003-08-08
Another classic Barry. The title alone should give it five stars, but the content overwhelms my funny bone.
At one point, I was falling out of my chair I was laughing so hard!
oh well....5 STARS
Early Barry. . ........2001-11-03
Though not as good as his later works, definitely worth buying, though 'Dave Barry's Guide To Life' is also availiable on Amazon.com and contains this and three other works of similiar quality and length by the same author, while being slightly cheaper than this edition alone.
Recommended.
Breaking Up Or Getting Engaged?.......2001-01-01
If you've made it to that chapter (Chapter 4) without laughing so hard you have beverages coming out of your nose, please check your pulse. You may already be dead.
Anyone who has ever read a Dave Barry article can appreciate his incredibly dry wit and hilarious sense of humor. Barry always seems to capture subjects that are serious, but manages to put a funny twist on them. Not only does he nail the concept of marriage AND/OR sex in this book, but the illustrations by Jerry O'Brien are the perfect compliment. The outrageous diagrams on "How to French Kiss" remind me of my life just last week, er, I mean high school.
This book is loaded with helpful tips for both men and women. For instance, Barry feels that the best bet for a new bride on how to get along with her mother-in-law is drugs. If only more people could read this book!
This book has something in it for everyone. If you are about to get married, the chapter entitled "How to Have a Perfect Wedding No Matter What" will definately come in handy. Of course, those of you already married, chapters "How to Argue Like a Veteran Married Couple" and "Children: Big Mistake or Bad Idea?" will, most definately, be of interest.
Barry's book is a fairly quick read, and would make a nice addition to anyone's book collection, if not for the mere fact that it is a great conversation piece. Any fan of Dave Barry will love it, and if you live on another planet, and have never heard of him, this is a great book to start with. You can't help but laugh!
A funny worldwide reality.......2000-04-17
Barry continues being one of my favorite. His approach to human marriage relationships is no doubt almost a law (a little bit exagerated, maybe). Chapters 6 7 8 and were my favorites. I've just married and it was sort of an x-ray of my situation, except by the fact that have always believed in what he precisely satirizes: we don't need to spend a fortune in a full-of-critics-and-unpleasant people-that will not help you solve your infinite problem-night. His statements I think are of an almost universal reality. The only inconvenient for us latin american readers are perhaps the local jokes He is very serious (I'm not kidding)in telling us: Life is very simple and worth enjoying! Why screwing it up?
Book Description
From the first eye contact to the therapist's couch, from the throes of ecstasy to the nitty-gritty of safer sex, from the world's sexiest animal to the dating jungle, The Cartoon Guide to Sex covers everything you've always wanted to know about sex. Frank, informative, and written with Larry Gonick's characteristic comic verve and scientific accuracy, this book gives a comprehensive discussion of the spectrum of human sexuality, including sexual structures and functions, gender roles and sexual identity, sexual arousal and response, sexual communication, love, marriage and other arrangements, contraception, and sexual health -- without the fig leaves.

Well-written, balanced...and funny........2007-08-13
If you are skittish about delving into the mechanics of reproduction with a pre-teen or new teen (probably because they would rather talk about this with a parent even less than...well, any other thing in the freakin' universe), this is a perfect book to surreptitiously leave on a bookshelf. I bought it and had it in my bedroom to review before turning it over to my son. A couple of days later, I realized that it was missing, and found it hastily tossed beneath the bed -- so the Theory of Pubescent Auto-gravitation to Sex Information definitely works. However, this is a last resort. If you find it difficult to talk directly, the best alternative is really a balanced "abstinence PLUS full disclosure" seminar run by people the kids can talk to. My church offered one like this and I believe the kids respond much more positively to being treated with respect regarding serious subjects. This book has that same idea behind its surface goofiness.
funny and informative.......2006-02-20
I would recomend this book for every one. It is funny and entertaining enought to keep a person reading but it contains enough information to get something out of the book. The book has a rather small section (5-15 pages) on how to fix sexual problems, but the main focus on the book is more on explaining and listing human sexual nature.
Gonick is AMAZING!.......2005-10-08
Larry Gonick continues to out-do himself with every new book he comes out with. This book is both intricate and funny, with amazing attention to details. Each page teaches and amuses, very typical of his work. You will learn more about sexuality in just the first few pages than you would in another entire book, and with
just the right amount of everything put in just the right way. This should be required reading in every high school and for anyone who ever thought about sex - get it?
The Fun Textbook on Human Sexuality.......2002-11-22
Larry Gonick is famous for his cartoon approaches to education, especially his books on history and science topics. In this book he teams up with sex educator Christine DeVault. The combination produces a good introductory text on sexuality that is lots of fun to read.
Narrated by a cartoon Mother Nature and a cartoon fairy called The Etiquette Elf, the book covers reproductive biology, sexual anatomy, developmental biology, gender roles, gender identity, interpersonal communication about sex, romantic love, the sexual act, birth control, health issues, STDs, non-consensual sex, and sexual function problems. All of this is done in delightful cartoons that are clear yet not overly explicit. Although the book is cartoon in format, the information provided is professional at an introductory level. The end of the book contains two pages of further readings, a list of journals devoted to sexuality, and eight resource organizations. An index allows you to find just what you need when you need it.
This is a valuable addition to the library of anyone who is sexually active or has plans to become so. Readers who expect Gonick's humor to dominate this book may be disappointed, but people who are looking for a good introductory sex manual will be overjoyed.
Kind of boring.......2002-04-14
Sex makes people crazy. Some people try to control it by becoming puritans. Others just let themselves go crazy. Besides the psychobabble and the Safe Sex sermons there's not really much to distinguish this comic from hundreds of other sex comics like Cherry or Omaha the Cat Dancer. The only reason why someone would read this would be to read up on Larry GOnick's current work. Sadly Larry Gonick has yet to do another Cartoon History of the Universe which were funny and informative.
Maybe if I hadn't read
Cartoon History of the Universe expecting great things from this book, I wouldn't be so disappointed.

Zen Garden, Foozball Replacement Player, Groovy Doorway Beads and many other funny ideas make this the perfect gift for anyone with a sense of humor.
101 SUPER USES FOR TAMPON APPLICATORS is a witty and creative look at a subject that is often taboo - but is really funny!

FUNNIEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ.......1999-05-08
This book is so funny. It makes light of something that has been a pain for the past 20 years for me. The illustrations are professional and funny! This is a superbly written book that kept me laughing for hours.
GOOD JOKE BUT BAD PICTURES.......1999-04-07
The jokes are good, but when you look at the pictures you loose all the interest of this book, pictures are in black/white and look like a child draw it!!!!
Is you buy it for jokes you will like it, bit if you buy it for pictures, you loose your money, the cover is the best picture.
After you read this book once you will trow it in the same place your mother throw her tampon.
THE PERFECT STOCKING STUFFER!.......1998-11-21

Customer Reviews:
If all that followed had songs THIS good///.......2007-05-13
I grew up watching the T.V series & listening to the songs this way.
I recently watch the entire series & I wonder...what were they thingking ?
It's dated but fun (for a Beatles fan) at least.I knew some of the
animation was done In Australia but I didn't realize how many episodes
were done here. This book is facinating,if only because most of the
people working on it were learning as they go. Yes,the show is cheap
looking (now) but HOW it got to look that way is just the begining...
I wish the book was better set out & in color but it is what it is & it's
worth the read especialy if you watched the show in the 60's. Oh yeah,
if you REALLY know your Beatles stuff...can YOU spot ALL of the mistakes
in the episodes/sing-a-longs that are NOT listed in this book ????
A fun read!.......2006-08-15
A great referance book about the making of those classic Beatles cartoons!
Beatletoons for the Real Fan.......2006-01-30
A book born out of a childhood love for the series, Beatletoons, The Real Story Behind the Cartoon Beatles is one that will be enjoyed by Beatles Cartoon fans, but it may not translate well to a general audience. Highlghts include insights into the 1960s television and animation industries, and a few pages on character development for the animated figures. The few photos of the living, breathing Beatles are not too clear. I'd love to see more clean, clear, artwork in the book...in color if possible. Still, chidren of the 60s will who tuned in every Saturday morning will likely enjoy it.
Awesome.......2005-09-08
I thought that Beatletoons was an awesome buy. It is a must have for every big Beatles fan. I am only sorry that I was not old enough to catch the airing of the cartoons when they were released in the 60's. This being so, I thought that Beatletoons caught me up on everything that I had missed. The book goes into great detail about the steps taken to create the hit series and gives a synopsis for every episode produced. I do recommend Beatletoons for every die-hard Beatles fan.
Excellent Back Story for Brodax' Up Periscope Yellow.......2004-12-05
I produced this series for the ABC network. It was a huge hit and cleared the path for my production of the motion picture, YELLOW SUBMARINE. Axelrod's book was well researched and offers the complete story graphically and otherwise of the series. I was very pleased with it. Makes a wonderful X-Mas gift.
