Book Description
From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of
Martin Dressler comes a stunningly original new book set in a Connecticut town over one incredible summer night. The delicious cast of characters includes a band of teenage girls who break into homes and simply leave notes reading "We Are Your Daughters," a young woman who meets a phantom lover on the tree swing in her back yard, a beautiful mannequin who steps down from her department store window, and all the dolls "no longer believed in," left abandoned in the attic, who magically come to life.
With each new book, Steven Millhauser radically stretches not only the limits of fiction but also of his seemingly limitless abilities.
Enchanted Night is a remarkable piece of fiction, a compact tale of loneliness and desire that is as hypnotic and rich as the language Millhauser uses to weave it.
Amazon.com
In novels such as Edwin Mullhouse and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Martin Dressler, Steven Millhauser conjured fictions as intricate and delicately formed as soap bubbles. True to form, his Enchanted Night seems to want to float right up out of the reader's hand. In its pages are many of Millhauser's trademark fascinations: dolls; mannequins; an obsessed artist; teenage girls meeting secretly at night; and above all, the strangeness lurking just under the surface of everyday life. Set entirely over the course of one night, Enchanted Night follows the denizens of a Connecticut town as they rise from their beds under the light of a brilliant, almost-full moon. Fourteen-year-old Laura Engstrom wakes to a restlessness so fierce that "if she doesn't do something right away, this second, she'll scream." Middle-aged Haverstraw (who still lives with his mother) writes for hours in the attic, then leaves to wander the streets. Janet Manning trysts with a lover in her yard, and a band of teenage girls breaks into houses only to leave behind the cryptic message "WE ARE YOUR DAUGHTERS." Meanwhile, more magical events are afoot. "This is the night of revelation. This is the night the dolls wake. This is the night of the dreamer in the attic. This is the night of the piper in the woods," a chorus of night voices tells us--and a mannequin begins to stir behind a store window, while all over town, abandoned dolls and stuffed animals come slowly to life.
So far, so good. But somewhere along the way, the fairy dust gets a little thick. Is it the chapter in which the moon goddess ravishes virginal Danny? ("Now she strokes the skin of the sleeping one, now she kisses his eyelids closed in dream, now she stiffens his love-lance with her hand.") Or perhaps the appearance of Pan, "a moon-dancer, a flute-dreamer" making music for the town's children? How about the "Song of the One-Eyed Cuddly Bear" chapter, which reads, in its entirety, "I wuv woo. Does woo wuv me?" The only real danger posed in this wispy novella--"the man with shiny black hair" who stalks Laura in order to add her to his "gallery"--is not actually a threat, we're assured. Millhauser even reduces his bold girl outlaws, with their "pleasure in violation," to sipping midnight lemonade with their victim. And what, really, is magic without danger? Decoration, mostly, though there's nothing particularly wrong with that--just nothing particularly urgent either. None of which is to say that there aren't moments of startling beauty in Enchanted Night. There is no stylist more graceful than Millhauser at his best, and here he writes movingly about the formless yearnings of adolescence and the mortal sweetness of sex. Yet even the prose can't quite animate his novella. In the end, Enchanted Night is a rarefied aesthetic experience that asks for very little back. --Mary Park

I hated to see it end.......2007-02-22
I read it while washing dishes, folding laundry, on my breaks, and even though I didn't want it to end, I couldn't stop reading. It's a beautiful, stylized read that lilts and flows. I was left starstruck.
One hundred percent recommended.
Dreamy nocturnal escape.......2006-02-24
Poetic, romantic, funny night of lunar longing for the residents of a suburban Connecticut town. One night with a cast of many intersecting entities including (but not limited to) a 14 year old girl, a mannequin, satyrs, wee children, and a lonely, middled aged man who still lives with Mommy. Oh, and dolls that come alive. Yes, this sounds overwrought and implausible, but the far-fetched is so neatly intertwined with the very believable longings of recognizable, everyday people that it works. There is also plenty of suspense. A beautiful, quick read.
A charming and imaginative tale.......2004-10-23
One enchanted night, under a full moon, the loners come out to walk in
the moonlight. The mournful music of a flute calls to children, who
leave their homes and walk into the woods. Dolls long forgotten come
alive and begin to dance, and a mannequin walks out of a store window
and joins a male admirer for a stroll beside the railroad tracks. This
is a short, fanciful tale about magical things than happen under the
full moon when lonely people go out to seek companionship. It was a
very enjoyable, quick read. Very charming.
Enjoy the language and the weave ... not the plot.......2004-07-08
In Enchanted Night, Millhauser has assembled a number of cultural images of the magical moon especially moon and youth, lonely nights etc. In this sense, the book is conventional and predictable. It is in his use of language and the intricate interweaving of stories, that Millhauser is inventive and original. This first several chapters seem unrelated except by time and location. One meets a 14 year old girl leaving a hot bedroom to escape angst. One meets dolls in an attic. One meets an unproductive 40 year old writer wanna be living in his mother's attic. One meets a mannnequin in a store window. A group of teenage girls who get their kicks breaking into homes not to steal but for the adventure of it. A twenty year old woman. In tracing these, and others, throughout the night, the novel slowly shows interconnections that yield a picture of a full town, a town with the average range of people and dreams. As Millhauser develops the interconnections, a reader may easily become distracted by the skill and ease with which it is done. The plot is not sufficient for the suspension of disbelief to eradicate the interest of the craftsmanship.
Millhauser shows a poets comfort with using words as his raw media - the pace of the sentences' rhythm rises and falls with the tension in the scene. The use of detail to create character is superb. Now and then the freshness of an image or a word makes the reader stop and take note. Yet the author sticks to the mundane - a partial roll of LifeSavers as thanks - in a way that makes the "enchanted night" somehow possible in every reader's experience.
A Great Introductory Novella to Milhauser's Bizarre World.......2003-06-23
This novella tells the story of one peculiar night in a small town that is having difficulty sleeping. Of course there have been other sleepless nights in this small town, but none until this one have been enchanted.
When the people of the town cannot sleep, they wander the streets, thinking that they are alone. Little do they know that the rest of the town is experiencing the same insomnia and are also wandering through the night. A girl longs for her beau to come to her lonely window; he does. A man lusts after a manequin in a window; she comes to life. The Pied Piper leads the children through the woods with his magic flute. A girl who decides to moonbathe in the nude is followed by a lusty man and rescued in the nick of time by a guy who lives in his mother's attic. A band of young female thieves enjoy lemonade in the most unlikely of homes.
The night is so fantastical that perhaps it was just a dream. Whatever it was, it makes for an enjoyable, short read.

Book Description
Ordermaster is the 13th book in the Saga of Recluce and the direct sequel to Wellspring of Chaos. The cooper Kharl has no sooner taken possession of the estate bestowed upon him by Lord Ghrant of Austra for his aid in quelling the revolt of Ghrant's dispossessed brother, when he is summoned back to the capital. Hagen, his friend the lord-chancellor, needs help in dealing with rebellious nobles. After a bloody campaign, in which Kharl discovers and is forced to use even more deadly order magery, civil order is restored and Ghrant's throne firmly secured. But Kharl is now a famous and feared public figure, the Lord's Mage, and his notoriety makes him uncomfortable. To his surprise, Kharl is soon called upon again by Lords Ghrant and Hagen, this time to return to his homeland of Nordla as envoy, because Nordla has become the next target of Hamorian expansion. Back in his hometown of Brysta, he discovers that his old enemy Egen is engaged in a plot with the Hamorians to take the throne from his father and open Nordla to the enemy. Kharl has to find a solution, for the sake of both the land of his birth and his adopted new country.

Can't really decide........2007-05-30
Did anyone else think that the ending was a little bit short? Honestly, about 3 pages of conclusion. Personally, I hope that Robert Jordan puts a little more work into wrapping things up after 13 books because otherwise I don't know what I'll do. Probably break a table. Anyway, I'd like to say that I really can't decide where this book falls. A lot of the book feels like the same old story: some craftsperson, usually a woodworker or a smith, finds out they have powers and are left on their own to figure out how to use them (Dorrin's book is usually of limited use and we're still left to wonder how Dorrin wrote a book at all). Confrontations ensue, CrummPT, wrap up etc. We do get law, envoys, seamanship, hardening air, chaos feedback, and breaking order = chaos, but what sounds like a lot of new things spreads out over about 800 pages, so it becomes swamped in same old same old. Ultimately, my recommendation would be to read Lorn's books, Nylan's books, and these two about Kharl. Throw in Cerryl's if you want to go two white and two black and learn about light lances. In parting, does anyone else feel that most of the 5 star reviews were planted?
P.S. Lerris is a chump.
Brilliance..........2006-09-07
Modesitt's sequel involving Kharl the cooper, turns ship's carpenter, turned mage, turned Lord of Austra is as equally brilliant as the opener. But that's not unexpected from Modesitt who has proven time and time again with his Saga of Recluce that, not only has he the ability to weave an astonishingly complete world picking his stories through the ages to create a vibrant history, but that his talents for spinning a simple yet utterly captivating story mean he is in the very top class of fantasy authors. Luckily he shows no sign of putting down his pen.
The sequel flows immediately from the end of the first, Kharl taking a couple of eightdays out at his new Cantyl estate to meet his steward and set an easy homestead in motion before he is called upon by Lord Ghrant to help head of an inevitable revolt by the other Austran Lords who see the chance to gain control of the island. Unfortunately, Kharl's ability to use order to discern lies and truths means the revolt kicks off far earlier and he is forced to hunt down several white mages whilst improving his order magery to reflect chaos back at those casting it at him. The results are inevitably spectacular as he moves around the countryside picking off the rebel lords and their white mages with his air hardening technique. The climax is reached as he defeats an extremely powerful white sorceress when he discovers he can turn chaos back to the sender amongst the chaos links generated and get through their shields.
Having earned Lord Ghrant a kingdom and being guided by Chancellor Hagan, Kharl returns to Cantyl for several months, taking time to build his cooperage before he is called on one more time to return to Brysta to head off Lord West and his evil son Egen who are seeking to gain control of Brysta and then threaten Austra. This gives him the chance to settle old scores from the first novel. It is tinged with sadness as he learns of the death of his youngest son. However, he is able to find Jeka in the midst of the new rebellion and develop their relationship whilst fighting off more white mages as Lord West is killed and his sons struggle for power. Eventually he puts the least terrible of the sons on the throne, destroys yet again Hamorian interests in causing trouble and returns peaceful to Cantyl with Jeka as his consort. An ending of sorts, but there is so much more scope for this unassuming cooper to become a mage as great as Creslin.
There is not much more to say. Modesitt's brilliance shines from each page as brightly as any of his other novels. There are several authors out there who have produced great fantasy series but with longevity comes mediocrity. Not so with Modesitt. He just gets better and better.
A Powerful, But Specialized Mage.......2006-08-27
Ordermaster (2005) is the thirteenth Fantasy novel in the Recluce Saga series, following Wellspring of Chaos. In the previous volume, Kharl ended the insurrection against Lord Ghrant by killing the two White Wizards and Lord Ilteron, Ghrant's older brother. He also rescued Lord Ghrant from the battlefield and brought him back to the Seastag. Lord Ghrant rewarded Kharl for his services with a landgrant, a stipend and the title of minor lord.
In this novel, Kharl has spent two eightdays getting to know the personnel and grounds of his new estate. He has made plans to build a cooperage where he can contribute something tangible to its upkeep. Then the Seafox docks at his private pier and Lord-Chancellor Hagen asks him for a favor.
Kharl returns to Valmurl with Lord Hagen to attend formal audiences as Lord Ghrant's Mage. After a good night's sleep, Kharl wakes when a servant delivers a breakfast tray to his room . . . laden with poison. After reporting the problem to Lord Hagen, he returns to his room with Undercaptain Charsal and a sergeant. The sergeant takes the breakfast tray away to be tested for poison and the Undercaptain takes Kharl to the kitchen for a better breakfast. On the way back to his room, Kharl is ambushed on the staircase by three men with crossbows.
At the audience of Guillam of Desfor, chief factor of Austra, Lord Ghrant questions the man about his actions and loyalty during the recently completed conflict. Guillam lies about everything. Then Kharl is allowed to question him and Guillam continues to lie. Since he refuses to tell the truth, Kharl suggests that he start telling the truth or choke on his lies. When he continues to lie, Kharl solidifies the air around him until he suffocates.
After this starling session, Lord Hagen calls in the top three military commanders and questions them about their prior actions and current loyalty. Commander Vatoran equivocates and then fakes a coughing spell. Commander Norgen states that he fears Lord Ghrant may not prove to be the ruler that his father was without continued good counsel, but he is loyal to the man despite his flaws. Commander Casolan does not think highly of Lord Ghrant's abilities either, but is still loyal to him.
Lord Vatoran is questioned further and Kharl judges him to be disloyal to Lord Ghrant. Vatoran is taken away by guards to the deep cell. The rebellion starts shortly thereafter.
This novel is about truth and actuality and the difference between the two. Kharl can tell whether someone is lying about his actions and intentions, but not necessarily about differences in viewpoints and beliefs. Kharl can only detect the lie when the speaker knows that his words are incorrect. Since the whole of actuality is unknown to anyone, a wrong belief is indistinguishable from a correct belief, except when Kharl is personally aware of the facts.
Kharl also becomes intimately aware of the extent of his own responsibilities. Since he does not know everything, he has to work with the information that he has available. Furthermore, he learns to ignore critics who are not knowledgeable about the situations that he faces; the man on the spot has to make his own decisions based on his current knowledge and go on from there. Of course, he must be as patient and cautious as possible, but sometimes actions are more important than correctness. If he makes mistakes, he can modify his further actions accordingly.
Neither is he responsible for the actions of others. Although he must protect those in his charge, if they die despite his best attempts, the killers are responsible for these deaths, not him. No matter how powerful he may be, Kharl cannot be everywhere at once. Nor is he responsible for the death of others who deliberately ignore his good advice.
One of the interesting moments in the novel concerns Kharl's speculations on the ordered nature of light. Is he on the verge of developing something like a laser? From the cover illustration on the hardback edition, one could assume that he was already using one, even though the author wrote that scene very differently; artistic license or a foretaste of the next installment? Read the following volume for an answer to this question!
Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high adventure, philosophical ruminations and a touch of romance.
-Arthur W. Jordin
A potboiler.......2006-08-08
A potboiler is defined as an inferior work done purely for money. Both this novel and its predecessor, "Wellspring of Chaos", fall clearly into this category. These are the first Recluce novels which are simply poor. One senses that Modesitt is bored.
The novels are not too bad, but they are pedestrian.
A solid addition to the Recluce Saga........2005-04-20
Modesitt delivers what his readers expect in this new eddition to the Recluce Saga. While following the same basic story outline as his past books, of a humble man discovering his talent for magery and then being forced to use it to influence world events in huge ways, L.E. is also able to continue adding much detail to his rich world of Recluce.
In this sequel to The Wellspring of Chaos, Kharl the cooper/beggar/sailor/carpenter/mage/lord continues his adventures on the island nations of Nordla and Austra. Fighting (and killing) mage after mage throughout the book makes for an exciting read and having the story take place in another part of the world besides Candar and Recluce helps in expanding the reader's understanding of the lands and their people. By some accounts, Kharl could be the most powerful order mage we've encountered up till now, able to withstand the effects of death and chaos better than other powerful mages. He surely faced and defeated more white wizards in one on one combat than any yet written about. Even if he isn't the most powerful per se, he has undoubtably discovered one of the most powerful uses of order in unlinking bound order and thus creating a chaos explosion. Regardless, Kharl is one of my favorite characters of the entire series. Powerful and imposing, he stands up to every challenge boldly (no matter how uncomfortable or unfamiliar) and prevails.
If you've become tired of Modesitt's world of Recluce, stop reading these books for a while. I find that if I space them out by a couple of months or more I am not turned off by the seemingly repetitive story lines. Each character and story is different in large and small ways and all are enjoyable.

Intriguing Read .......2007-07-24
I picked it up while browsing at the library expecting this book to be nothing special. I was wrong. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. It was everything I like in a book. Intrigue, Suspense, Battles of Good and Evil... But, more importantly, this book wasn't just good fiction suspense. There is truth behind the fiction. This brought up some important questions that really left me thinking for weeks after reading it. I highly recommend this to any Christian.
This book! I couldn't put it down........2003-07-06
Dave Hunt does a wonderful job with this fictional book which actually origionally wrote as a screenplay. After awhile it was moved over to a book series. Meant to be book one in a series of five. It presents some interesting thoughts and ideas. It is almost a book that presents fact using fiction. The explanation Dave Hunt provides in this "fictional" book for UFO's and Aliens is actualy a good one that I found quite reasonable and believable. I enjoyed it very much. It's quite a well done novel. It has remained my favorite book since I first picked it up. Good Job Dave Hunt! My only complaint is that it is hard to find.
The archon conspiracy.......2002-09-01
Written in 1989 but perhaps more up to date than today's newspaper. I seldom read fiction but I got into this. The best fiction book I have ever read.
a great book that all christians should read.......2000-04-19
The mind invaders was a great book,it is a great idea on aliens and ufo invasions,it really gets down to the truth about physics and fortune tellers and it was a great book by Dave Hunt one of his best!
THE MIND INVADERS IS A MUST READ!.......2000-02-24
I picked up this book by accident. However after I began reading it I simply could not put it down! Dave Hunt weaves a tale of intrigue, suspense and super reality that may give answers to the complex question of UFO's, ascended masters, and the netherworld that surrounds us. This is simply quite a compelling work of fiction that is more reality and truth than one may want to admit. I highly recommend it to all.

"Refreshing".......2005-04-12
Unique concepts and possibilities for the more mature intellectual. Some spiritual grounding in The Light can add a second witness to its truth.
A Setback for the Human Race.......2004-10-31
I will not even attempt to read this book after looking at this author's supposed credentials & the type of propaganda on a miriad of topics that he has put out. He has written books like "Wicca: Satan's Little White Lie" & "Blood on the Doorposts: An Advanced Course in Spiritual Warfare", in addition to this little piece on UFO's, but his only insightful background comes from being a lost & misguided soul looking for a religion to call home. How do you perport to write knowledgeably about Wicca, when you were a member of a Satanist cult, not a Wiccan coven? How do you call yourself a "Born Again servant of Jesus Christ" when you encourage violence, hysteria, and misinformation as tools in your spiritual belt to use on this Earth? I know decent upstanding people from many religions who would find this fodder utterly appauling, and as a Christian one should be particularly offended at the idea that this man writes as an authority on the truth to all of us. When did it becomes OK for us to lie & hate to further the work of Jesus? Is God not one of kindness, forgiveness, tolerance, knowledge, and truth? And why exactly does a former Satanist cult member turned Christian have any inside knowledge about UFO's? If you click on this author's name & look at the prolific titles he has spawned over time, you will see that he is extremely paranoid, is convinced that everything to include the dust under his doormat is suspect for Anti-Christian activity, and that he could be a terrorist event waiting to happen. That said, at least in my country of origin we do have freedom of speech & he is as entitled to his opinions as I am to mine. You are just as entitled to read them if you have the urge & the money (or you can find it in a library to read this for free). As open as my mind is, it is not a perfect thing & I cannot wrap it around the seeming negativity of his writing.

Wierdly Interesting.......1998-09-02
The whole book sits on a premise that it is easy to manipulate the media. Interesting paradox as you start to wonder if the whole book is a media hoax!!
Stories vary from hoaxing the European press by announcing a performance artist had gone missing to planning the downfall of society by going shopping with credit cards!!
All in all a very interesting read.

Book Description
Watch out - the mad scientist has unleashed havoc on the world. The mutant bugs he created have escaped, and it's up to children to capture the icky insects and blast them off to outer space forever. Run through the junkyard, in and out and around the tires, and dash into a house under buggy siege. Quick....grab them in the classroom, snatch them in the swamp, and follow them all across town. They're slinky, they're slimy, but they're not smarter than you: there the rocket awaits, its hatch open to trap the invaders. Herd them inside--BOOM to the moon!

Customer Reviews:
READ THIS BOOK.......2000-11-04
This is a great introduction to the ideas of Gregory Bateson, one of the most important thinkers of our times. He is able to bridge the gap between our ideas about a materialistic world and concepts of mind. He said that Western science did not explain mind, it explained mind away.
Anyone who feels that there is more to life than logic and science, but who doesn't feel comfortable with every new age quack idea, should read this book. Bateson's thesis is that aesthetics, beauty, and the sacred are as valid as ways of knowing as logic and science are, and he can back that up with real ideas about the real world.
A unique collaboration and a new approach to religion.......2000-09-29
Gregory Bateson is well known, among those with the perseverance to wrestle through his very compact prose, for his highly original synthesis of cybernetics, biology, anthropology and -- above all -- epistemology. Near the end of his one book written with a general audience in mind (Mind and Nature), he mentions his intention to continue his explorations into the realms of the sacred and the aesthetic. By the time of his death in 1980 he had written several drafts and discussed the project in depth with his daughter Mary Catherine Bateson, an investigator of great insight in her own right and a better writer than Gregory's devotion to formal rigor allowed him to be. This book is the end result of that collaboration, which Mary completed in 1986. Those familiar with Gregory's work will find some of his familiar themes explored in somewhat more accessible terms, along with some unexpected new ideas. As with his earlier works, Bateson often has to redefine some familiar words, and introduce new usages for others, which makes reading him a struggle, but a rewarding struggle in the long run. Those familiar with Mary Catherine's work will not be disappointed either. Her summarizing chapter which pulls together the various strands of the book and of her father's thought is a masterpiece of synthesis in its own right. And this book, which is above all about *relationships* at every level from the cellular to the cultural to the religious, is a fascinating record of the very human relationship between father and daughter. Like all of the elder Bateson's work, this one will take some time to digest. How much have I learned from it about "the epistemology of the sacred"? I expect it will take years to find out, and that I'll be revisiting this book many times while its implications work themselves out. As G.B. said, Life is a game whose purpose is discovering the rules. This volume is a voyage of discovery.
