Book Description

EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO . . .

When Damien was eight, his father vanished - replaced by an impostor. The stranger stole his father's identity and murdered his mother, altering digital records to conceal the crime. Damien, finding that no adults believed him, fled to live with relatives.

NOW . . .

Damien is an adult; an operative in a covert international organization, acting under the command of the legendary Ivory Madonna. He has the power, he has the support of his friends - and now it's time to avenge his father. And, if he can, to save the world in the process.

5 out of 5 stars Sprawling, Hopeful Saga of a Plausible Near-Future.......2002-05-29

Adventure, cyberpunk, romance, humor, social commentary, originality, plain old sense-of-wonder...whatever you're looking for, you'll find it here. And it isn't the same-old cookie-cutter formula -- DANCE FOR THE IVORY MADONNA offers a fresh take on hoary sf tropes from artificial intelligence and virtual reality to psionics and space colonization. I'll be the first to say it: this novel is a sure dark-horse contender for the year's big sf awards. Do yourself a favor, and give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome vr gaming.......2002-05-26

There is so much going on in this book that its hard to pick out what i like best. The conceptions of cyberspace however are really different there are three distinct levels of cyberspace all accessible thru RCspex (which are a slimmed down version of vr goggles.) Virtua is an enchanced rendering of the real world. Cyberbia is an imaginary space that the user can enhance as much as he wants like the web on vr. And my favorite El Juego is a multilevel d&d type game where just about everyone has their own character or characters. And its all run by the AIs who have their own reasons and motivations. Definately recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Ivory Madonna Rules.......2002-04-06

It is a relief to read a book in which a woman of size is presented as strong and dynamic. One of the main characters, Miranda Maris (AKA "The Ivory Madonna"), is built like the "fat lady" who has to sing before the opera is over. She's also a member of Congress, head of a major fashion company, and a leader in an international underground espionage organization. Miranda is intelligent, warm, witty, and powerful. And by the end of the book, she rises to...no, I won't spoil it.

Hooray for a book that isn't afraid to have a large woman as an attractive and sympathetic character!

5 out of 5 stars A Meaningful Sense of Wonder.......2002-04-04

Years ago, I was blown away by the originality of The Leaves of October, an underrated SF gem. Its haunting lyricism left me craving more. Now, in his first novel since 1988, Don Sakers has provided an ample reward for my patience: Dance for the Ivory Madonna.

It must have taken an enormous amount of research to provide this book with scientific and sociopolitical foundations for its credible and nicely delineated near-future setting. Fortunately, the author enhances each premise by his deft balance of statistical elements with those of a more poetic, metaphysical nature. His AI's, for example, speak only in metaphors. Yet, it is they who possess ultimate control of mankind's destiny through technology. Depictions of their cyberspace domain are rendered through the imagery of fantastic landscapes, psi abilities, and human sensations. Much of this narrative is printed in alternating fonts and recounted using extensive flashbacks, techniques that require greater concentration than usual on the reader's part. But the compensation of suspenseful pacing and unpredictability make it well worth the effort.

Most impressive of all is the political conscience that permeates this book. Through its futuristic viewpoints, our current prejudices and tolerances are put into perspective; we are forced to confront their consequences. Furthermore, Sakers makes us question the ways that technology is transforming our lives, our dependence upon political and religious conventions and the (mis)treatment of various races and social classes. Despite the seriousness of such themes, the author utilizes writing style and voice to prove that he is not devoid of levity. Particularly amusing is his method for replacing potentially objectionable words in his text.

Characterizations are quite diverse, especially the host of eccentric creative types who inhabit some of the book's better moments. Damien Nshogoza, the African-American protagonist, navigates the uncharted regions of cyberspace as easily as he traverses the reorganized territories of a future world or the inner workings of a covert international organization, the Nexus.

There were areas where the plausibility of certain situations within the chronology of the narrative's time span became questionable. Nevertheless, I was intrigued by the innovative fashion in which the author pushed those boundaries. This creates the sense of wonder that science fiction is about. Thankfully, there are still some genre writers who have both the courage and the ability to accomplish this. Without question, Don Sakers is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Ordering for second time.......2006-03-13

I love this book! I'm a 4th year medical student and I have 3 other texts on immunology and this is the one that I keep going back to. I loaned it to a friend and it burned in a fire so here I am ordering it again. The text is simple and to the point. The diagrams are suitable and I found them detailed enough. This is my bedtime reading book.

      3 out of 5 stars For MS-1s.......2006-02-25

This book is adequate. I cannot give it a much more glowing review than that. I must agree with some of the other reviewers in that it lacks good figures. The text is ok. I would definitely discourage anyone from buying this as a reference text.
I mainly bought the book because it has review questions at the end of each chapter that sometimes appear on our exams.
For med students I would definitely stick with the BRS Micro/immuno and augment it's succinctness with handwritten notes.

4 out of 5 stars I would recommend this book to others.......2005-09-01

This version is better than prvious one. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!! There is no other word for it........2003-11-09

This book is excellent as an introductory textbook of immunology. I teach 1st year medical students immunology and have very little curriculum time to do this. The 5th edition of Immunology: A Short Course covers all the essential material without making it needlessly cumbersome. I recommend it without reservation.

      1 out of 5 stars Horrible Book.......2002-02-22

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. I bought this book for my M1 Immuno class and threw it away after a week. The explainations are poor at best and the pictures are pathetic.

              4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2007-08-19

Laura suffered a accident five years prior and as a result, she now has a form of brain damage called aphasia. She can live a pretty normal life, just has a hard time counting and saying 3 word syllables. She comes to work for Isaiah,a veterinarian and a real sweeet guy who has no interest of a relationship for a couple of years yet. As they spend time together, they start falling in love with each other slowly but each deny it. Overall the story was great and there is an underlying mystery that is easy to see who the assailant is (why I gave it a 4), but it was a sweet story. The love scenes were great and I loved that she took the time to develop their relationship and it wasnt at all forced. The only real downside is that it dragged on at times and that Laura sometimes seemed a little too nice. This was my first Coutier family read and I felt lost at times, like I should know some of the other characters, so I recommend that you do not start with this one. I am going back and start the stories at the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Another of my Favorite Authors.......2007-05-16

A book in a series which I wish to own by another of my favorite authors.

5 out of 5 stars My Sunshine by Catherine Anderson.......2007-05-12

Once again a wonderfully written story n the Coulter family series by Catherine Anderson. You won't want to put it down!

              4 out of 5 stars Not Catherine's best...but still very good,.......2006-11-05

I am a Catherine Anderson fan, and I just recently started reading Catherine Anderson's contemporary romances (I love historical romances, never really was into modern romances, but Catherine's great writing "Keegan's lady", "Annie's Song", "Summer breeze", encouraged me to check out her contemporary love stories).

I must say that while I like this book, it is definitely not Catherine's best. The premise of the story is unique, and the storyline had so much promise, but the book was very slow the first 200+ pages. And there was so much concentration of vet work. I mean sure, healing animals is important, but the way Isaiah's work was portrayed, it was blown out of proportion.

This book could have been shortened by at least a hundred pages. And the fact that it takes Isaiah so long to realize that he loves Laura (it happens somewhere at 300+ pages), sort of paralyzed the storyline. Had the story been shortened by at least a hundred pages, and had the romance started earlier, at least somewhere before 300+ pages, this would have been a great story.

Nonetheless this is a good and enjoyable read, the last hundred pages are wonderful, and five star worthy.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book of 2005.......2006-09-05

Last year I polled all my reading friends in November and had them email me the name of their favorite book for the year and their comments. I printed them all out and sent them with my Christmas cards to all my avid reader friends. They all loved the idea. When it came time to choose mine, I picked this one. I read it once and then a couple of months later read it again. I don't read weighty books, I read for light entertainment and so I don't ask a lot of a book. There have been some real disappointments even with my relaxed standards! And there have been some that I have really enjoyed, but this one stood out over all that I had gone through in 2005, probably close to 300 books.

I have enjoyed all of Ms. Anderson's books, some more than others, but all were worth the read, and this brothers series has been totally enjoyable. I am sure that critics are right that there are probably MORE obstacles than are presented, but this is fiction and I know that not every heroine in real life is drop dead gorgeous and not every dream man is perfect like these guys, I know I am not reading about real life and enjoy the fantasy. Why can't this also be a world where handicapped is not as hard as in real life? I think the idea of addressing it and giving people an opportunity to think about it spreads a little more compassion and understanding than we have right now. Every time I write a review after reading the nay sayers who have written before me I just want to point out its fiction!!! Perhaps these people who find these books wanting ought to begin shopping in higher literary planes and leave the simple stuff to us more simple readers???

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 'SunShines' in your direction..........2007-08-27

Don't let the cover fool you! This book, on first glance, looks like it might be a bit of a light-hearted read, and that you could flip through in half an hour or so. I got hooked, not only by the down-to-earth language and style the material was presented in, but at the same time, the ease in which Lutin presents emotionally complex information.

Being happy sounds simple enough, but as most of us know life can get pretty complex at times making it difficult to concentrate or achieve some of the simplest pleasures in life. `SunShines' brings the focus back in on what is actually important to achieve happiness using a fairly simple, but powerful astrological technique. For those of you with as understanding of astrology, Lutin uses the Nodes as the basis for his book.

The book is broken up into two parts: part one looks at the individual sun signs which are further broken down into subsections according to the year you were born (this will let you know which sections to look at in part two). Part two looks at the deeper issues that may need attention in order for you to understand the astrology of being happy. For example, you can find money, love, recognition and escape as part of the themes examined here. There is also an Appendix explaining the astrology in more detail behind the book for those, like me, who are astrologers.

I must say that I am very impressed with the quality and content of this title, as it delivered much more than I expected: although it was very easy and fun to read, it was also deep in the information that was presented.

In summary, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in self-improvement or in learning about themselves more - as well as those that are trying to find more happiness in their life! This is an excellent, easy to understand title. You don't need any astrological knowledge at all except to know the date of your birth - although people with a background in this subject will also get a lot of information out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Lutin is right on again........2007-08-21

Michael Lutin Rocks! Anything by him is always right on. I read his "daily" every day. Mind you, he writes just one horoscope for all signs and still hits it right on every time. It's almost spooky. If you only buy one book all year, make it this one. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Sunshines:the astrology of being happy.......2007-08-08

What a wonderful way to quickly get in touch with the stuff that can keep
you from being happy. If you can lower your defenses for a moment or two, you can begin to feel what Michael Lutin says is not only useful and true, but that his advice is positive and motivating. He has a wonderful sense of humor that helps take the edge off any painful self realizations. He gets to the heart of what's keeping you from feeling your absolute best. I've learned a lot so far from the book. It's a keeper.

              5 out of 5 stars Inspired!.......2007-06-26

As a professional astrologer, I've never trusted solar houses for individual delineation, but this book has made me reconsider. He uses solar houses to add dimension to south node sign positions, and it seems to work. I still have to compare his insights to a few more charts, but so far this is inspired new information.

1 out of 5 stars not up to expectations at all.......2007-05-29

don't get me wrong, i love michael lutin. i read his horoscopes every day and have even bought forecasts from his website. but this book is very superficial. first of all, i thought this was a book about the nodes but it only talks about sun signs. the nice thing is that he goes through those signs degree by degree; unfortunately the descriptions aren't very profound or interesting.

the second portion of the book is even more non-specific. there are sections on things like wealth, relationships, etc and he talks about 'finding your true north' and 'where things go south'...but as far as i could tell this advice was not tailored to any given planet or node placements. not enough astrology, too many platitudes.

In 1949, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction was founded upon two radical principles: to publish SF and fantasy in one volume and to emphasize literary quality. Fifty years later, F&SF is still going strong--indeed, it is the most acclaimed of SF's longest-running magazines. In honor of this achievement, publisher Edward L. Ferman and editor Gordon Van Gelder have assembled many of F&SF's finest stories from the preceding five years for The Best from Fantasy & Science Fiction: The Fiftieth Anniversary Anthology.

In Hugo Award winner Bruce Sterling's droll "Maneki Neko," a U.S. agent battles a perplexing, worldwide Net conspiracy. In World Fantasy Award winner John Crowley's insightful "Gone," alien invaders present earth with a mysterious and compelling choice. In Maureen F. McHugh's thought-provoking, Hugo-winning alternate history, "The Lincoln Train," President Lincoln's survival begets a world in which white Southerners are exiled to a concentration camp in Indian territory. The anthology also includes Elizabeth Hand's Nebula and World Fantasy Award-winning "Last Summer at Mars Hill"; Gene Wolfe's allegorical science fantasy "No Planets Strike"; Bruce Holland Rogers's Nebula-winning "Lifeboat on a Burning Sea"; Harlan Ellison's angry "Sensible City"; Paul Di Filippo's satirical "Have Gun, Will Edit"; Ray Bradbury's affectionate Laurel and Hardy tribute, "Another Fine Mess"; and Ursula K. Le Guin's Nebula-winning "Solitude." --Cynthia Ward

5 out of 5 stars One of the strongest in this long-running "best-of" series.......2006-09-23

This is one of the strongest in the long-running "Best from F&SF" series. This one collects the editors' picks from 1994-1998, which was mostly the Kristine Kathryn Rusch era. The Table of Contents is above, just before the "Search inside this book" box. 21 stories, and hardly a weak one in the bunch. Six won major awards (Hugo, Nebula, and/or World Fantasy awards. My favorites include Bruce Sterling's wonderful Hugo winner "Maneki Neko"; Ursula Le Guin's great "Solitude", one of her very best Hainish stories; Bradley Denton's droll "We Love Lydia Love", about a unique Austin rocker; SN Dyer's pointed (and very funny) "Sins of the Mothers".... I could go on and on, but trust me, if you like good SF and fantasy shorts, this is an anthology to savor, and keep to reread your personal favorites. Highly recommended.

                Happy reading--

                1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment..........2001-07-10

I really enjoy sci-fi the likes of I Robot from Isaac Asimov and many many Joe Haldeman stories, but this particular collection is terrible. I'm about 8 stories in and there's not even one gem so far. I believe this book should be re-titled to - " The Ultra-Contemplative Super-Pseudo-Intellectual's Guide to Boring Science Fiction Stories. Sorry, it's just not a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2000-01-13

Terry Bisson, Ray Bradbury, Paul di Filippo, Harlan Ellison, Esther Friesner, Elizabeth Hand, Tanith Lee, Ursula K. Le Guin, Robert Reed, Bruce Holland Rogers, Bruce Sterling, Kate Wilhelm, and Gene Wolf are all writers whose name alone would qualify at least serious consideration for buying an anthology. This has them all. F&SF has long been a testiment to the greatness of speculative fiction and these stories are the essence of what the editors strive for: unrealistic stories of the highest literary caliber. Give this book to any one who loves SF, for that matter give this to anyone who hates SF and see if they don't love these stories.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning anthology; the top of the field.......1999-11-05

The best SF magazine in the business still continues to thrive, as evidenced by this stellar collection.

Sirona Knight should never be considered a scholarly source on Druidism. She's just horrible & Wicca-fies everything she touches. Her books are usually her take on things, not an expression of things as they are or were. Stay away--FAR away!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Celtic Paganism.......2006-08-07

This book is one of the best I've read on Celtic traditions. Most books on the Celts give you lots of examples of rituals and tools, but they don't explain the base of the Celtic beliefs. THIS BOOK DOES. This book gives you the history on the Celtic traditions. Not just a general overview, but why they believed they way they did. It is the best source of information I have come across. It has the information on tools and rituals, but those are no good if you follow something you don't know the history of or why you are doing rituals or what the tools are used for. This book has everything.

5 out of 5 stars A well written book on the Celts.......2006-04-02

I have read several of Sirona Knight's many books, and have always found them enjoyable to read. "Celtic Traditions" offers an excellent overview of Celtic culture, including a section on faery traditions. Beautifully combines historical data with modern Celtic spirituality. I strongly recommend this book along with "The Druids" by Peter Ellis and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Elves and Fairies" by Sirona Knight

1 out of 5 stars I am so angry I bought this book.......2005-10-14

This woman has the writing skills of a high school dropout. Some sentences are written so badly I had to read them again just to make sure they were in English. For some reason I thought this was a serious book about the Celtic revival phenomenon instead, I found out it was just another new age junk book filled with clichés, gross generalizations and non-sequiturs. Here is a classic example (pp. 29-20)

"Matriarchal order and lineages stem from the early concept that creation comes from women. Creation is a divine seed, stemming from the Mother. Plainly, the mother's identity is always certain while the father's is not..."

                  I want my money back.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have on Celtic Spirituality.......2005-05-27

This book would be a great starting point for those interested in exploring the realms of Celtic Magic. Ms. Knight covers Shamanism, the Celtic Gods and Goddesses, the Druids (including a brief description of the Ogham, a Celtic form of tree divination), the Faeries, and modern Celtic Traditions. She includes several visualizations and some sample rituals. She also talks about Celtic Wicca, which I didn't actually think was necessary; for me the Celtic lore would have been enough, but of course this would be an added plus for those interested in following the Wiccan path.

She also has a recommended reading list and a list of favorite Celtic music titles which I found to be very helpful.

Ms. Knight's writing is enjoyable and easy to read, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wishing to explore the Celtic path.
