      Book Description

Has the future—ever more people with their houses, stores, roads, and sprawl—been wrecking your past?

Every day brings evidence of dramatic change upon the landscape. It's called progress, but chances are you experience it as theft. For we are all deeply attached to the places we call home. Since the sixties, the pace of development has picked up, reaching a velocity today that signals an end to every place once held dear. Melissa Holbrook Pierson, with unalloyed insight, elucidates how it feels to lose that landscape of home. In the past twenty years, like countless towns it resembles, Akron, Ohio, has lost its singularity and much of what native-daughter Pierson loved about it. She then moves to Hoboken, New Jersey, a forgotten appendage of New York—until stockbrokers discover it. Finally, she speaks of rural areas, telling of the thousands of upstate New Yorkers displaced by city reservoirs.

A unique book uniquely of our moment: This is what it feels like to lose the place you love.

5 out of 5 stars An homage to places we love.......2007-05-07

Perhaps it is because I am originally from Akron, Ohio, one of the places where fellow native Pierson lovingly writes about with clarity and sorrow. Or perhaps it is just because I love well-written books about landscapes and places. Regardless, this book is still resonating with me several months after reading it. Pierson weaves in her own memoir of the places she has known and lived in her life with their history and quotes from other authors. Along the way she makes the point that we take our landscapes and special buildings for granted until it is too late and they have been replaced by strip malls and a more homogenous American background.

For anyone who has ridden their bikes around their childhood neighborhoods or have known each house, each bush and tree, or corner store or the threads of roads and hills which form our memories of place, this book will have great meaning. You will be taken to your home place, wherever that may be, and you will see our vanishing American landscape with greater appreciation. Pierson's lucid, introspective prose is a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars Provokes the Mind.......2007-01-22

If you have ever raged against the greed of "development" or experienced the sadness of seeing the fencerow you explored as a child plowed under by "progress," The Place You Love Is Gone is a warm and welcome act of understanding and comprehension. Holbrook weaves a tale of reminicence with a subtle but effective exposition of a movement that is destroying not only the places we know and that are part of us; but a "development" movement that is destroying our self.

Holbrook's writing style interjects (sometimes startling) facts with an overall story about life in three communities--Akron, Hoboken, and the Catskills of New York. The book has an almost poetic feel and does drag at times. However, overall, the style is effective. One cannot put down this book and not think of his or her first home--and tellingly, that home is probably gone forever for most of us.

This is a book that needed to be written and Holbrook did a magnificent job of effectively communicating the effects of the "development" industry without the normal soap box stands. An excellent work and likely to become a classic.

      4 out of 5 stars shared nostalgia.......2006-07-03

Holbrook Pierson's dreamy and emotive look at changing landscapes, both in her personal history and the history of America (mostly) invites the reader to identify the ghosts of their own lost places. The second-person voice points at the heart of the reader even though it is her memories we drift through. What I found compelling about the book was not necessarily her anger at the collective disregard for patience and care for place (it's become so easy to rail, unsuccessfully, against the Wal-marts or McMansions), but her style. The book reads like one long prose poem, full of startling, recognizable and even funny images.

That the voice can sound both emotional and right at the same time is admirable. The cries are like a slap in the face to wake up: wake up to what we're losing. There were times I felt this cry might be too one-sided, too apt to romantisize the past or the victims of forced change, but I think Pierson aknowledges this for the most part. She articulates so elegantly what many people feel about "progress".

4 out of 5 stars Three special places transformed by growth.......2006-04-13

THE PLACE YOU LOVE IS GONE: PROGRESS HITS HOME hit particularly hard for author Melissa Holbrook Pierson, who tells of three special places in her life which have been radically changed. From her birthplace Akron, Ohio which shaped her soul to her move to Hoboken, New Jersey which was a backwater to New York until its transformation during the eighties, special places which have been transformed by growth and progress are considered for their sense of place, purpose, and changes over time. A compelling blend of memoir and survey of growth planning and change.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but overwritten in places.......2006-02-02

I enjoyed this book as I am a lover of the history of places and like to know how a village, town or cityscape came about.

I felt a connection to the book because of previous work assignments in a dead end Ohio town , being able to see Hoboken from my office and owning a home in Ulster County, not far from the Catskills and only a short hop from Kingston.

For me the only disappointments were the overwrought metaphysical language Pierson used in the first chapter in describing Akron and the lack of detail on Kingston, the proposed third chapter.

The third chapter is strange in this way in that Pierson is discussing the barbaric approach that New York City used to appropriate clean water supplies ,although the chapter title is about Kingston, she only spends a handful of pages talking about Kingston.

These are minor quibbles ,the work done in the third chapter captured the current shape of the county and how it was irrevocably changed by the reservoirs which replaced the drowned villages.

      Book Description

Alice Munro, who received the National Book Critics Circle Award for her latest collection of stories, The Love of a Good Woman, is widely acknowledged as a modern master of the short story. In this earlier collection, she demonstrates all of those strengths that have won her so many literary accolades.

A divorced woman returns to her childhood home where she confronts the memory of her parents' confounding yet deep bond. The accidental near-drowning of a child exposes the fragility of the trust between children and parents. A young man, remembering a terrifying childhood incident, wrestles with the responsibility he has always felt for his younger brother. In these and other stories Alice Munro proves once again a sensitive and compassionate chronicler of our times. Drawing us into the most intimate corners of ordinary lives, she reveals much about ourselves, our choices, and our experiences of love.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to your library and your life.......2006-08-05

A woman visits her childhood home. A Canadian girl's aunt from California comes for a visit. A woman gets an inheritance from her father.

I could choose any one of the above descriptions to describe what happens in the story "The Progress of Love". But don't be fooled; they're not what the story is about. Such is the beauty of Alice Munro's work: Like life itself, her short stories defy easy definitions.

I love Alice Munro for her efficiency and anti-earnestness. She will paint the landscape of the world in a single short story. In twenty pages she will map out the human heart with her indigenous sense of direction. I have read entire novels that were unable to capture the depth embodied in Alice Munro's short stories. The vast majority of novel writers should be ashamed for being so wasteful with words.

In a world full of unsubstantiated hype, Alice Munro's story collections are an exception. Every time I think she has outdone herself - that this is it, she can't get any better than this- she writes new stories and proves me wrong. I love picking up the latest collection of her stories and knowing that, good as it is, the best is yet to come. Her older work is marked heavily by moments of revelation. While some readers may find this subject matter unfulfilling, it cannot be argued that she reveals these moments with impeccable skill. Her later work (see "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage" and "Runaway") capitalizes on this skill and expands it, using these surprising and illuminating moments to push the dramatic action forward. Unlike many great artists who reach the summit of their talent and then spend the rest of their careers falling and fumbling about with the rest of us mortals, Alice Munro consistently finds ways to climb higher and higher into the stratosphere. Taking this into consideration it makes perfect sense that, with regard to Munro's writing, "heavenly" may be the appropriate word.

4 out of 5 stars Very solid introduction.......2001-08-31

Mid-period Munro, when she began in earnest to explore a talent for expansiveness. The title story is as fine as anything she's written. The final pages reap deliciously what the story's juxtaposed timelines and plots have set up. You walk away from the story shaking your head, sighing, aching. Not as fine a collection as The Moons of Jupiter, also out of the same period in her career, but still hard to beat by another writer in the medium. It seems short stories have waited for Munro for too long, and we are too privileged to be readers in her lifetime.

      5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2001-05-17

Alice Munro is, by my reckoning, the greatest short story writer of our time. Her collection, The Progress of Love, is ample proof. I recommend her work with trepidation to aspiring short story writers because her writing is intimidatingly exquisite. Charles Baxter or Lorrie Moore could profit from a session in the batting cage with Munro, but for most everybody else, it would be like taking your Tee-Ball Leaguer for a hitting tutorial with Ted Williams.

What's so good about Munro's writing? Foremost is her precision. The center of the short story writer's craft is economy. It's very difficult to find a word that doesn't advance both story and theme in Munro's work. The reader finds himself stopping to ponder passages not because they're opaque but because they are so powerfully rendered and so intricately woven. I've taught "Monsieur Les Deux Chapeaux" for seven years, and Ross's moment on the bridge never fails to transport me and my students. I don't expect to find an end to my thought about this moment or the story itself. It will unquestionably remain a short story by which I measure all others.

5 out of 5 stars Injured people, small lights of happiness........1996-09-03

Alice Munro is such a fine writer that she can take some fifty-odd characters over the course of a story collection and make them seem like various aspects of a complex and sensitive personality. These stories are careful and elegant, and writers will note Munro's idiosyncratically beautiful use of unexpected adjectives. But even without such wonderful writing, her stories would speak for themselves: her characters live life directly, simply, and often painfully, and they have more feeling than they can express. Munro does it for them. This collection includes "The Moon in the Orange Street Skating Rink," one of the most moving stories I can imagine. Read it and weep.

                  5 out of 5 stars Really entertaining.......2007-08-29

This book is 800+ pages of a practical joke. It is very entertaining and well worth reading. It kept my attention throughout the story and I found myself laughing at the absurdities as well as the 'wink winks'. Beyond that I would hope that people are intelligent and patient enough with the book to realize that it is a work of fiction, and that while there may be an iota of truth in every fifty pages, it is just a maybe. Be sure to read after the story is completed, and you won't be disappointed. However if you're looking for a convenient linear storyline you definitely will be. One last note, this book has made me research more historical archives than any history class, any thing in life which makes you think is a great thing to experience.

I first read this book (or the three paperbacks) when I was 14, and have re-read it a number of times throughout the intervening years. Every time, I come out the other side a changed man. I think a fully open mind ("gullible in the right way") could do worse than start the process toward "illumiantion" by reading this book.

Folks who really love this should check out Cosmic Trigger: The Final Secret of the Illuminati, which is Wilson's non-fiction account of what happened after the book. It's a trip.

The final book in the Star Shards Trilogy brings five super-powered teenagers up against a foe that can only be defeated if the Star Shards can overcome the obstacles--including death--that separate them.

Dillon, Winston, and Lourdes survived the disaster that killed their companions Michael and Tory. As Winston struggles to locate Dillon, now a prisoner, Lourdes succumbs first to her personal demons and then to the influence of the soul-eating Vectors, powerful beings intent on conquering Earth. To fight them, Dillon and Winston must accomplish the impossible: retrieve Michael, Tory, and the long-lost Deanna from death and win back the soul of Lourdes.

The book is at its best when focused on the thorny philosophical issues that the characters must confront--responsibility, connection, and forgiveness. At other times, particularly when the Star Shards approach their final confrontation, the story feels rushed. However, Shattered Sky is a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. --Roz Genessee

                            Book Description

It began innocently enough: six children conceived at the exact moment that the star Mentaras-H went supernova. The explosion transformed their souls into living star fragments. It also conferred upon each of them a unique but mysterious power -a power that until they learned its secret masqueraded as a warping disfigurement. For some, it was physical. For others, it was emotional. But for ALL six it meant one thing: their lives would never be the same.In time they unlocked the secret of their power. Their gifts brought them incredible riches and attention. Once despised for their deformities, they would come to be worshiped-and feared-as gods. But with unlimited power would come the temptation to abuse it and-in a desperate struggle for supremacy-the risk of turning against one another like hungry wolves. But only now will the true cost of their gifts be revealed. A new and terrifying force has been loosed in the universe. It infects an alien planet like a rampaging virus. When the inhabitants of the doomed planet are forced to flee, they must conquer and colonize a new planet.Their choice: Earth. Only one power exists that could conceivably prevent the extermination of the human race: the Star Shards. But only if the six put aside their titanic egos and join forces. Welcome to Judgment Day.

                            5 out of 5 stars A wonderful conlcusion to a wonderful series!.......2003-07-13

I have just finished this book moments ago, and I must say, that this book left me satiated after reading the first two... which left me hungry for it ever since I finished them.

The book follows the plot of the three remaining shards and their path to face their newest evil yet; as a few new faces join the crew, so do some old friends... and enemies.

Shusterman's work was well thought out and well planned... not to mention well researched!

Thank you Shusterman for giving us this delightful conclusion... with a surprising ending!

                            5 out of 5 stars amazing..........2003-01-11

I've followed the Star Shards Trilogy since the beginning and all I can say is that, Shusterman's conclusion is chilling. The story reaches inside you, it really affects you. In my opinion, it is one of his best works, and one of the most memorable. The messenges in it are ageless and the book will no doubt be read more than once.

                                      Book Description

Beauty does not linger, it only visits.
Yet beauty's visitation affects us and invites us into its rhythm,
it calls us to feel, think, and act beautifully in the world:
to create and live a life that awakens the Beautiful.

Beauty is a gentle but urgent call to awaken. Bestselling author John O'Donohue opens our eyes, hearts, and minds to the wonder of our own relationship with beauty by exposing the infinity and mystery of its breadth. His words return us to the dignity of silence, profundity of stillness, power of thought and perception, and the eternal grace and generosity of beauty's presence. In this masterful and revelatory work, O'Donohue encourages our greater intimacy with beauty and celebrates it for what it really is: a homecoming of the human spirit. As he focuses on the classical, medieval, and Celtic traditions of art, music, literature, nature, and language, O'Donohue reveals how beauty's invisible embrace invites us toward new heights of passion and creativity even in these uncertain times of global conflict and crisis.

5 out of 5 stars Awake to the Beauty that surrounds you!.......2007-07-08

This CD fills the very essence of my soul! As a Franciscan religious I appreciate the beauty and splendor of all of God's creation! John O'Donahue has captured the essence of the Franciscan Spirit! St. Francis called everything by the intimate name of "brother" and "sister"! As St. Francis says, "Put on new glasses" "adjust your focus" and you will see beauty all around you." With St. Francis we can all say "My God and My All"! Thank you and God bless you, Sister Rose Therese Di Gregorio OSF.

I adored this book from page one to the last. It is such an inspiration to me and I
felt like a found in this book my "bible" and guide to life as I have created it.

5 out of 5 stars A good look at the aesthetic dimension to God.......2006-10-25

Beauty: The invisible embrace is essentially a poetic and theological reflection on the beauty of the world, the universe, of life, and of God, using ideas from Christian tradition, theology, mysticism, and poetry.

The ideas in here are deeply Neo-Platonic and will be easily recognised by anyone who has read Plotinus (in a way this book unfolds the ideas in his work 'On Beauty) however they are also deeply tinged with O'Donahue's Celtic appreciation for the beauty of nature. It is perhaps not surprising Ireland has produced many great thinkers and poets who refreshingly don't see the world as a horrible place infected by sin, but rather a beautiful reflection of God's glory. The greatest Celtic philosopher, Eriugena, called the universe 'God's theophany.'

Indeed this book treats our world and our life as a theophany of divine beauty, to be celebrated at every moment despite its pain, vulnerability, and tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to uncovering true beauty in the world.......2004-06-02

My review of this book can be summed up with a single word: Wow! When I grabbed a copy of /Beauty/, I was expecting a preachy book about some glorified ideal of beauty that us mere mortals cannot attain. I'm happy to report I was proven quite wrong in that expectation.

/Beauty/ is a hard book to classify - it's not a philosophy book, it's not a religion book, it just... is. It's like hopping on a tourist bus and cruising down the road of the beautiful, with John O'Donohue pointing out the sights along the way. "To your left, you will see the beauty of light dancing across the sky at twilight. And to your right, the misty beams of sun's fading glory illuminating every crevice and boulder on the mountainside..." You're not outright told what beauty is, per se. You are simply guided through the process of understanding beauty as not merely a characteristic, but as a force. O'Donohue illuminates what beauty *does* and where you might find it.

This is a magical, wonderful book. It is written in a relaxed and almost lyrical style - as a book on the beautiful should be. True beauty cannot be described by the mere words of men, but John O'Donohue does an admirable job of opening us up to "the eternal grace and generosity of beauty's presence." That, in a nutshell, is what this book is all about.

Once again, O'Donahue delivers a treatise on the beauty of life, the beauty of living fully and the beauty of belief. This book is really a marvelous experience. The author challenges the reader to choose being awake, aware and available. I loved it.
